“An American in Paris”

Music and romance? Yes, please. Broadway returns to Las Vegas when the Tony Awardwinning musical about an American soldier, a mysterious French girl and an indomitable European city takes the stage, recreating that era after World War II. Each looks for a new beginning in Paris in this timeless classic with unforgettable songs from George and Ira Gershwin. Dare you not to sing along to “They Can't Take That Away From Me” or “But Not for Me,” songs that echo that Rat Pack era of Las Vegas. Great Things Not to Be Missed

1 JIMMY BUFFET & THE CORAL REEFER BAND > APRIL 1 Las Vegas will be wasting away again in margaritaville. Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band are known for their laidback beach style with songs such as “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday.” His style, which he calls “gulf and western,” took shape when he moved to Key West in 1971. MGM Grand Garden Arena, 1.844.379.0370

Jimmy Buffet 2 ROBERT IRVINE > APRIL 6 “Dinner: Impossible!” converts into “Robert Irvine Live” on the stage at the Tropicana Theater. Watch the chef bring an interactive show (that means you might be on stage) while going behind the scenes of his Food Network series. Tropicana Theater at Tropicana, 1. 800.829.9034

A PERFECT CIRCLE > APRIL 6-8 This supergroup doesn‘t tour often, last appearing in Las Vegas in 2011, but three nights of shows ensures that fans will hear “Passive,” “The Hollow” and “Judith.” And that may mean that new music is on the way from Tool frontman Maynard Keenan and guitarist Billy Howerdel. Pearl at the Palms, 702.944.3200

“American Idiot” surely make the set list along with songs for their latest album “Revolution Radio.” MGM Grand Garden Arena, 1.844.379.0370 BILL HALEY & HIS COMETS > APRIL 8-9 Put on your poodle skirts and slick back your hair to head back to the ’50s for some good ole rock-n-roll. 6 GARRISON KEILLOR > APRIL 8 The storyteller and humorist shares his hilarious anecdotes about growing up in the American Midwest, the people of Lake Wobegon and “late-life fatherhood.” The host of the radio show “A Prairie Home Companion” keeps audiences on their feet with his blend of dry humor, wisdom and song. A guide to perfect patios, great golf courses and show-stopping resident performers. FOOD + DRINK

Spring Into Action Las Vegas really blossoms in spring, bringing mild weather, blue skies and never-ending sun. Take your dining and drinks out to the patio to truly enjoy this most spectacular time of year.

Request the private cabanas at Costa di Mare.

w w w.wheretraveler.c o m

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR

when the weather turns absolutely perfect in Las Vegas. Savor these moments by heading to the great outdoors while you eat and drink. Vegas has a patio to meet your needs. Get a slow start to the morning with breakfast or brunch. Share small plates with a friend. Head to one of the highest patios in the city. Even do some people watching while you dine on the patio. If romance is in the cards, try for a private cabana to make the evening that much more special. And, of course, a drink is always appropriate. Here, a look at some of the must-visit patios in Las Vegas.

LAGO BY JULIAN SERRANO Step out on the patio at this restaurant for Milan-inspired decor with a view overlooking the Bellagio’s dancing fountains. The best time to go to this Italian restaurant is for brunch, when James Beard Foundation awardwinning chef Julian Serrano dishes out a three-course menu that might include dishes such as an eggplant parmesan Benedict, Italian sausage fried egg burger or Nonna’s frittata with baked eggs and vegetables on Sundays from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. That bread basket is to die for. Bellagio, 1.866.259.7111.

MIZUMI Some of the best Japanese cuisine in the city comes at the hands of Devin Hashimoto at Wynn. While warmer weather means the floor-to-ceiling windows are open, practically making the entire dining room a patio, try to score the private cabana in the Japanese gardens that sits atop a koi pond with remarkable views of the 90-foot waterfall. Order sushi and sashimi, teppanyaki dishes or saikyo miso sea bass and Alaskan king crab from the robatayaki menu. Wynn, 702.770.3320.

2

VICE VERSA PATIO & LOUNGE This whimsical patio that sits in front of Vdara has a prime view of the comings and

3

goings at the resort and neighboring Aria as well as a front-row seat to “Big Edge,” the sculpture made of canoes from artist Nancy Rubins. Order small plates such as lobster tacos and Thai chicken satay or try one of the desserts, including butterscotch pudding with aged cheddar popcorn while you swing on the chairs on the patio. Vdara, 702.590.2030. MON AMI GABI When Paris isn’t in the cards, Las Vegas might be the next best thing. Mon Ami Gabi at Paris has a reputation as the best people-watching patio in the city and for good reason. Those tables splay out on the wide sidewalk with the Fountains at Bellagio capturing everyone’s attention across the boulevard. The good news is that the classic French bistro opens at 7 a.m. for those in the mood for breakfast while steak frites, trout almondine and beef bourguignon are just some of the dishes that will make you go oh-la-la at dinner. Paris, 702.944.4224.

The patio at Lago by Julian Serrano features the best view of the Fountains at Bellagio

4

RIVEA French chef Alain Ducasse takes his patio to the 64th floor of the Delano with spectacular views of the Strip looking north. While a sunset dinner here may leave you mesmerized by the view, it’s the breezy vibe of the Italian-inspired dishes that will keep you coming back. Try specialty dishes such as marinated sea bass, beef carpaccio and cured ham tigelle with a tomato-almond pesto to whisk your mind away from Las Vegas and to the Riviera instead. Neighboring Skyfall Lounge keeps things daring with refreshing cocktails such as the Victim of Elegance with Alain Ducasse’s own champagne, aperol, strawberries, dry vermouth and lemon juice. Delano, 702.632.9500.

MORELS FRENCH STEAKHOUSE & BISTRO A raw bar brimming with oysters, crab claws and shrimp, a cheese and charcuterie bar with more than 60 cheeses from around the world and outdoor dining French style are just some of the accoutrements at this brasserie at The Palazzo. While dining outside on the patio overlooking the Strip, try sauteed red snapper or an 18-hour braised short rib and pair them with one of the 60 wines by the glass or 400 bottles for a perfect way to spend the night. The Palazzo, 702.607.6333.

6

COSTA DI MARE Divine fish and seafood from the Italian coastal waters is flown in by the ton to satisfy the diners at this respite at Wynn.

7

For romance, request one of the cabanas, private enclaves that sit around the restaurant’s lagoon. For a true taste of Italy’s romantic coastline, order the six-course prix fixe menu from chef Mark LoRusso that takes you on a journey with the charcoal-grilled octopus from Liguria, cuttlefish from Venice and risotto with mussels and red mullet from Sardinia. Wynn, 702.770.3305. STRIPSIDE CAFE & BAR Order up a huevos rancheros burrito, chicken parmesan, nachos, cheesesteak sandwich or a cookies and cream milkshake on the patio of this restaurant at the front of Caesars Palace. Watch the foot traffic at the busiest intersection in the state while enjoying the casual vibe here. Caesars Palace, 702. 731.7373.

Golf Pros. With nearly perfect weather in the spring, fall and winter, many head to Las Vegas to tee off at one of the nearly 50 golf courses scattered around the metro area. Here, a look at eight of the must-play golf courses and some of their unique features. SHADOW CREEK While nearly impossible to get into (you must be a guest a MGM Resorts’ properties), Shadow Creek brings a Tom Fazio-designed course 15 minutes north of the Strip. The par five fourth hole features a left bend to a lake, while the dramatic 17th hole leads golfers up a ridge to the green, surrounded by rocks, water and a waterfall. 3 Shadow Creek Drive, North Las Vegas, 702.399.7111.

Shadow Creek

CASCATA You may just run into big horn sheep at this course that skirts along the 3,600-foot Red Mountain slopes 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Rees Jones designed this par-72 course that features lakes, streams and a 37,000-squarefoot clubhouse. Cascata Drive, Boulder City, 702.294.2005. ROYAL LINKS Architect Pete Dye designed the 18 holes that pay homage to the great courses found on the British Open. Look for Troon’s “Postage Stamp” and “Road Hole” and “Hell Bunker” from the Old Course at St. Andrews. Get to know what courses you’re hitting by reading the plaques on each tee box. 5995 E. Vegas Valley Drive, 702.765.0484.

WILDHORSE GOLF COURSE Water circles the ninth hole, a 398-yard, par-four, making it the most difficult on the course that opened in 1959 as the Paradise Valley Country Club. During the 1960s, the former Showboat Country Club co-hosted the PGA Tour’s Sahara Invitational, an honor it received again in 1983, when Fuzzy Zoeller won. The parkland course features mountain views. 2100 W. Warm Springs Road, Henderson, 702.434.9000. SPANISH TRAIL COUNTRY CLUB Mix and match the 18 holes you play at Spanish Trail. Three nine-hole courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. use the 27 holes here. The longest—The Canyon—gets its name from the sloping fairways and greens. Those last three holes are a real challenge. The Lakes offers water features on six of the nine holes, with water bordering the greens on five. The par-three third hole requires soaring across two lakes. 5050 Spanish Trail Lane, 702.364.5050. BALI HAI Seven acres of water features and Augusta white sand make up this desination golf course right off the Strip. Brian Curley and Lee E. Schmidt designed this championship course

Q: Tell me about one of your favorite places to send first-time Vegas visitors. A: I love to send guests to downtown to Fremont Street, where they can experience old school Las Vegas with the lights and the Slotzilla zip line. For dining, I send them to our amazing restaurants—Bazaar Meat by José Andrés, Cleo and Katsuya. Q: I want to update my Facebook photo. What should I have in the background of my selfie? A: I like to do scenic selfies so backgrounds of the Grand Canyon or Madame Tussauds work well. Q: Tell me about your favorite hidden gem in Las Vegas. A: Casa di Amore Italian Restaurant is my absolute favorite hidden gem. It gives you the Italian vibe with a singer who sounds like Frank Sinatra who serenades going around the restaurant. Q: Where should I eat if I want to celebrate a special occasion? A: Most definitely Top of the World with its beautiful ambiance. The view of Las Vegas is amazing. The service is spectacular and the food is absolutely fabulous. Q: What has been your most unusual request as a concierge? A: I helped coordinate a full wedding proposal ceremony over at The Venetian on the gondola ride and while the gondola was coming back in we had a custom made 6 by 8 banner with all of his guy friends holding the banner that read, “Will you marry me?” while he gave her the ring. She said yes. Priceless Q: What about the craziest request? A: I once had a VIP guest checking in and requested a large bag of M&Ms to be placed in a bowl in the room with all of the brown M&Ms removed. He also requested to have a bottle of hand sanitizer in every room with a box of Kleenex in each room of the suite as well.

Challenging Course

Designed by architect Bert Stamps in 1961, the Las Vegas National Golf Course is one of the most historic in town; in addition to hosting numerous LPGA and PGA events, it was the site where Tiger Woods carded a 1-under par 70 (his highest of the tournament) on the way to capturing his first PGA Tour victory in 1996. Palm, pine and olive trees protect the well-bunkered greens and lush fairways. This exquisite championship golf course is located only two miles from the Strip and the Las Vegas Convention Center. It’s a great spot for families—junior golf is free with a paying adult, contact the golf shop for details. Located at 1911 E. Desert Inn Road, 702.734.1796.

Las Vegas Your Way

Foodie

Celebrate spring with the freshest catches of the day. You name it, we’ve got the restaurant dishing out lobster, crab, oysters, mussels and fish dishes. Head to the Golden Nugget for macadamia-crusted mahi or east-meets-west tuna at (1) Chart House. Be sure to check out the massive fish tank in the restaurant. Step inside a two-story tree house at The Shops at Crystals to dine on arctic char, sea scallops and Hawaiian big eye tuna at (2) Mastro’s Ocean Club. Try the vanilla-battered shrimp. (3) Landry’s Seafood (2610 W. Sahara Ave.) specializes in Gulf Coast seafood including snapper Hemingway and crab-stuffed mahi for lunch or dinner. Alaskan king crab legs, lobster tails and snow crab even make an appearance, along with gulten-free options.

Family Fun

Grab the kids and have some fun. (1) Las Vegas Mini Gran Prix (1401 N. Rainbow Blvd.)

lets you race your friends and family on one of four tracks for go karts or get silly on the slides at this family-fun zone. (2) Strike a pose with Sandra Bullock, Bradley Cooper or Celine Dion—and don’t forget your camera. (3) Madame Tussauds’ wax figurines at the Grand Canal Shoppes look so real you can shock your friends with photos of a chance encounter with a celebrity or two. It can be our secret. Come face-to-face with the ocean’s most dangerous predators and the gentle giants at the (2) Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay. Feed the sharks, stingrays or sea turtles for a memory to take home.

Fashionista

Looking for pumped up kicks? Vegas abounds with locations to find snazzy sneakers that are the envy of your friends. (1) CRSVR (pronounced “Crossover”) has its own private label sneakers along with shoes from Nike, Air Jordan, Adidas, Asics and more at the Cosmopolitan. If rapper Nas ruled the world, we would all be wearing his favorite sneakers. Instead, find rare versions from Jordan and Nike as well as Be@rbrick and Publish at (2) 12 A.M. Run at the Linq Promenade, where Nas picked out the brands in this boutique. Make like a local and head to (3) Feature Sneaker (3735 Spring Mountain Road) for ultra-cool sneakers, streetwear and sunglasses for men and women.
