Island adventures abound Maui’s reputation as one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations owes much of its acclaim to Mount Haleakalā. Every sunrise viewed from its 10,000-foot summit is a kaleidoscopic picture of brilliance (pages 16-17). Beyond its inherent beauty, there are other reasons that Maui ranks among the best places to visit. For gourmands, epicurean

fertile volcanic soil and year-round sunshine, Maui has slowly become a mecca for breweries, distilleries and a single winery. Yet, the production of spirits is nothing new to the island. In fact, its history can be traced back to King Kamehameha I, who was said to be an aficionado of rum after being introduced to it by a sea captain. Even such prominent families as the Alexanders and Baldwins were once known as Prohibitionists. Today, though, brewers, distillers and vintners operate in the open, many providing tours for anyone interested in learn-
events give reason to fly to the Valley Isle. Every year, a contingent of national and international chefs descend on our shores to participate in such festivals as Kapalua Food & Wine and Taste of Wailea (pages 14-15). And you can’t leave the island without imbibing a craft cocktail or trying some kombucha, a fermented effervescent tea (page 19).

Framed by blossoming flower beds and a towering variety of trees planted more than 150 years ago on the original Rose Ranch Estate, the winery is perched 1,800 feet above sea level on the slopes of Haleakalā. The volcanic soils here provide a rich environment for grapes to flourish. Founded in 1974 by the Erdman family, MauiWine is the island’s sole commercial winery that produces a varied selection of estate-grown grapes, including Syrah,

Chenin-Viognier, Malbec and Grenache. Vintners also produce pineapple-infused wines, which generally don’t age as well as grapes. Complimentary tastings are offered every day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Guided tours are conducted daily at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., starting at the King’s Cottage, which was once a mountain retreat where King Kalākaua—the last
reigning king of Hawai’i— and Queen Kapi’olani would come to relax and be entertained. “The tour sounds better with a taste of wine first,” quips a visitor from Portland, Ore., who was sampling the Sparkling Wine. “We have our own vineyards in Oregon but the scenery isn’t anything like this.” Kula, 808.878.6058, mauiwine.com

Roots
The longest-running event of its kind across the United States, the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival will enter its 36th year from June 8-11. This celebration of epicurean excellence combines the finest in food and wine while embracing all things Hawaiian—notably the culinary bounty on Maui. Over the years, the festival program has grown to incorporate cooking demonstrations, wine-andfood pairings, a golf tournament and two major evening galas—the celebrated Grand Tasting with theme-inspired cuisine and wines from around the world and the Seafood Festival, featuring culinary delights from Hawai‘i’s most prominent names in the local dining scene, as well as visiting chefs. “The objective each year is to continue to position the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival as the most distinguished culinary Festival in the state of Hawai‘i, and as one of the most respected in the nation,” say event organizers. “Consumers are able to sample the best wines and interact with prominent industry leaders in one of the most beautiful resort settings in the world.” kapaluawineandfoodfestival.com
A staple in the Hawaiian diet, taro is a root vegetable often seen in large open paddies with sturdy stems standing 2- to 3-feet tall that support large, heart-shaped leaves. In the hands of chefs, the starchy tuber is elevated to a gourmet level during the 25th Annual East Maui Taro Festival, scheduled for April 29. Attendees can sample taro-inspired dishes from at least 20 different food vendors, as well as try their hands at poi pounding. The allday festival is held at the Hāna Ballpark. tarofestival.org

Beyond the impressive list of movies, the annual Maui Film Festival celebrates the culinary arts with two impressive events. Recognizing that food is the other half of cinema, Wailea Resort chefs display their own superstar talents at Taste of Wailea, the culinary version of the festival’s Celestial Cinema. Foodies and film buffs gather under the stars in an atmosphere where everything dazzles—the food, the wine, the sunset, the celebrities and the good vibes. Wailea’s chefs, sommeliers and wine purveyors will pull out all the stops in their menus and pairings as they share the culinary red carpet. This year’s event will take place on June 24, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Anyone who has experienced Taste of Chocolate will never stop longing for the next one. Expect locally grown cacao beans, mocha caramel macchiattos, rich dark chocolate ganache and more. Every year since 1929, the Hawaiian Islands have recognized May 1 as Lei Day. As proclaimed by the late-Gov. Wallace Rider Farrington, Lei Day was a day to “observe and honor the traditions of Hawai‘i-nei by wearing and displaying lei.” Although the event is once a year, locals continue the culture of giving a lei to anyone celebrating a special occasion. Outdoor Activities HIKE MAUI From 10-foot cannonball
jumps into sacred pools to hiking along the rushing waterfalls of Hana to the desert-like terrain of Mt. Haleakala, Hike Maui has the key to the island’s most exhilarating trail adventures. Various tours and packages cater to different ages and fitness levels. hikemaui.com. 808.879.5270. HOOKIPA BEACH During winter
months, powerful surges of surf roll in, earning Hookipa its status as the windsurfing mecca of the world. The powdery sand beach is long and narrow, and an exposed reef runs along the length of the shorebreak where green sea turtles are often spotted. Even on average surf days, strong winds, currents and shallow reef make swimming here a challenge, but not impossible, given the tidepools and protected wading areas. On the Pavilions side, small areas of sandy-bottom ocean also offer sheltered swimming. For watching surfers and the surf, Hookipa Lookout provides optimum viewing. Mile Marker #9 Hana Hwy., Paia. 808.572.8122. KAHOMA RANCHWhat better way to
end your vroom-vroom roaring dune buggy rides, while taking in spectacular scenic views of West Maui mountains and landscape, than with a swoosh and kerplunk dunk into the valley’s freshwater reservoir. From children to adults (pretending to be children), visitors of all ages agree that the culmination on the Kahoma Ranch’s water slides makes for an experience like no other. kahomaranch.com. 808.667.1978. KULA COUNTRY FARMS MAUI Locals
flow to Kula Country Farms to comb through rows and rows of the ripened red berries (during the spring/summer) and pumpkin patch (during the winter months). Keiki can partake in fun activities in the garden, such as minigolf and bocce ball. The farm stand also offers fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the season for everyone to enjoy. kulacountryfarmsmaui.com 808.878.8381. RAPPEL MAUIWith no previous experi-

SEVEN SACRED POOLSA series of
cascading waterfalls and tranquil pools flow through the O’heo Gulch. Above the Seven Sacred Pools and surrounded by verdant vegetation, the Pipiwai Trail is a 4-mile roundtrip hike that ascends 650 feet. The trail can be challenging at times, due to its sometimes-steep terrain. It’s well worth the trip as many people consider it the best hike on the island. nps.gov/hale/ planyourvisit/kipahulu.htm.

THE GUIDE
Beachy Keen
Aquatic Fantasy
From the stunning black sands in East Maui to the dramatic red granules at Kaihalulu in Hāna, Maui’s 30 miles of beaches consistently rank as some of “America’s Best.” No two beaches are alike, with Kapalua’s DT Fleming Beach, Kā‘anapali Beach, Wailea Beach and Kapalua Bay Beach among the most popular. Other beaches not to miss are Ho‘okipa Beach (pictured) and Makena Beach. Check the surf forecast daily for tide reports, as the waves can get unpredictable along some shorelines.
The island of Molokini—located three miles off the southwest coast of Maui—is known as one of the best snorkeling and diving spots on the globe. It’s also a bird sanctuary and a popular destination for bird-watchers.

First Look HALEAKALA One of Hawai‘i’s biggest
attractions is the stunning 10,000-foot Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano. Haleakala’s most magnificent feature is the crater itself: 3,000 feet deep, 2.5 miles across and a circumference of 21 miles. HANA POOLS The terraced cold
springs known as the Hana Pools are Hawai‘i’s greatest natural day spa. A daybreak or sunset dip in this springfed body of water is both surreal and relaxing, and you can oftentimes have it all to yourself. HELITOURS Maui’s helicopter tours
combine eye-popping visuals with amusement-park–style thrills. Companies may offer 20-minute to hourlong
tours that take you tantalizingly close to the lip of volcanoes, through mountain valleys and over the beaches. ‘IAO NEEDLE The “Needle” is a 1,200-
foot cone of hardened lava at the heart of the ‘Iao Valley, a 6.2-acre state park just west of Wailuku in West Maui. SNORKELING OFF MOLOKINI The
turquoise waters and exotic marine life around this tiny crescent-shaped island are located three miles off the southwest coast of Maui.
Transportation MAUI BUS The Maui Bus has eight
routes. The Kihei Islander Route connects Wailea, Kihei, Maalaea Harbor and Kahului; the Lahaina Islander links Kahului, Ma’alaea Harbor and Lahaina; The Kaanapali Islander Route connects Lahaina with the resorts at Ka‘anapali. Fare for each line is $2. co.maui.hi.us. For route and timetable information, please call 808.871.4838.

Maui Your Way UNIQUE TRAVEL RECOMMENDATIONS, FIT TO MATCH YOUR PERSONAL STYLE.
Culture
Local Foods
Nightlife
Learn about the history and culture of Maui through the graceful art of hula. Many performing halau (hula groups) perform daily at local resorts and at such shopping destinations as The Shops at Wailea. Throughout Maui, historical places and sacred spots—such as a he’iau (temple) or an ahupua’a (ancient Hawaiian land division)—are often pointed out by a placard, explaining their significance to the island’s history. Top off your day of exploring the rich Mauian culture with a surfing lesson at the beach. Be sure to wear sunscreen and be vigilant of the waves.
What better way to get to know Maui than with the very foods and treats that locals crave on a daily basis? Known for its “crispy manju”— a Japanese pastry dessert—Home Maid Bakery has been open for more than half a century. Maui Specialty Chocolates’ velvety smooth desserts lure customers to come in again and again. The popularity appeals to visitors who frequent the stores to fill up their carry-ons with goodies. And although you can’t bring this treat back home, a classic shave ice cone allows you to taste the many flavors of Maui.
When the lights go out in Maui, it hardly ever means it’s time to call it a day. Get your night-owl fix with a visit to the monthly First Friday celebration in Wailuku. The streets are closed off, and the entire city breaks out in dance party mode. Maui Arts & Cultural Center also knows a thing or two about parties. Check out its daily schedule of national headliners who perform regularly at its various venues. If a calmer and more relaxed night is what you’re looking for, you can’t beat a nice and simple stroll along the beach during Maui’s golden sunset hour.
