Adventure Awaits Sure, vacations are meant to be a time to relax—but it’s also a time to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Check out the seasonal-only phenomenon when humpback whales venture thousands of miles to the warm waters of Hawai‘i to breed and spawn their young calves (pages 14 and 15). See what it’s like to fly like a bird with one of

was given as a gift to agricultural artist and horticultural master, Ali‘i Chang. With previous experience in farming, Chang decided to take on the venture of the fragrant herb and soon developed it into a 13.5-acre farm, with up to 45 different varieties of lavender. As it turned out, lavender thrived on the chronic drought conditions of Kula, sipping mostly from the sprinkled mist that settled along the mountainside in the late afternoon. With those ideal weather conditions, the lavender bloomed yearround, attracting visitors

the many aerial activities, which include helicopter tours, a paraglide or hang glide experience, and a zipline through the trees of Kahakapao Valley (pages 16 and 17). Also, speaking of adventure, hang out at any one of Maui’s unique and distinctive neighborhood communities or experience a lū‘au to get a feel of the “aloha spirit” (pages 18 and 19).

Migrating mammals return to Hawai‘i’s warm waters

WINTER WONDERS

They perform head lunges. They slap their tales and flukes. And they perform acrobatic twists as they breach. Every winter from November to May, with the peak of the season being from January to March, humpback whales, or kohola in Hawaiian, swim thousands of miles to mate, calve and nurse their young in the warm waters between Maui and the neighboring islands of Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe. Visitors have the opportunity to see these giant marvels via a chartered boat or visiting the Humpback Whale National Sanctuary Visitor Center in Kīhei. 14 W H E R E C I T Y N A M E I M O N T H Y E A R

WHALE WATCHING

FAMILY FUN

Open Ocean

Whale of a Time Seeing one of the world’s largest mammals in the open water is a thrill, and tour boats can legally get you as close as 100 yards—the length of a football field—away from them, for your safety as well as the whales. While that may seem far, remember that a humpback whale can grow to a length of 52 feet and weigh about 80,000 pounds. Most whalewatching tours will depart from Lāhainā and Mā‘alaea harbors and cruise through the ‘Au‘au Channel, between Maui and Lāna‘i. As many as 10,000 whales could be in the area over the course of the season.

Outdoor Feast The modern lū‘au gained notoriety in the 1950s when ocean liners began bringing in tourists who were eager to learn island customs. Commercial Hawaiian lū‘au began popping up across the Islands as hula girls and ‘ukulele became iconic images of Hawai‘i.

Dinner Show A lū‘au is much more than food. Even classic French cooking can’t hold a candle to the rigors of lū‘au preparation. The Hawaiians of old spent days in the ritual of gathering: spearing fish, harvesting seaweed, picking flowers and fruit, hunting boar for the imu, and, always, preparing their musical offerings for the dancing and partying that followed. With a commercial lū‘au, hula and feasting still hold lessons of Hawai‘i’s past, where stories of the Islands can once again live and where forgotten spiritual legends can be remembered—even over a blue Hawai‘i or mai tai. 18 W H E R E M AU I I FA L L / W I N T E R 201 6  2017

OLD LĀHAINĀ LŪ‘AU At this award-winning lū‘au, the island’s most accomplished hula dancers perform with an oceanfront background. The food? A buffet table teems with abundance. Precontact Hawaiian staples (laulau, poi, raw tuna, sweet potato) appear with the lomi salmon, chicken long rice, tenderloin steak and other foods introduced by later arrivals. The entertainment is all Hawaiian, well-researched and superbly performed, and there’s a premium open bar throughout. 1251 Front St., 808.667.1998. www.oldlahainaluau.com WAILELE POLYNESIAN LŪ‘AU AT WESTIN The redesigned Wailele Polynesian Lū‘au at The Westin Maui Resort & Spa is a feast for the eyes. Makawao, Pā‘ia and Kula are perfect partners in a triad of destinations on the verdant slopes of Haleakalā.

Once a plantation town centered on Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, Pā‘ia today is the global emblem of windsurfing and the last stop for stocking up on supplies for the long drive to Hāna. In the winter months, the waters of Ho‘okipa are dotted with windsurfers as they slice through air and water in acrobatic maneuvers. Pā‘ia abounds with surf and windsurfing shops, bohochic boutiques, juice bars, gelato shops and assorted eateries. Time permitting, on your way back to your hotel, stop and amble

BUCOLIC SCENERY Kula is a welcome sprawl of green clinging to the slopes of Haleakalā, a balm for the spirit on the journey to Makawao

Rural Charm At the edge of the Olinda forest, Makawao, “forest beginning,” is aptly named. With its paniolo (cowboy) heritage, renowned galleries and quaint vintage storefronts, Makawao is every traveler’s dream. And it’s not just for travelers. Island residents come from across the island to shop, dine and explore. They know that towns like Makawao are cherished reminders of a bygone Hawai‘i in which a relaxing rural lifestyle prevailed. Old hitching posts still appear before some of the wooden storefronts. Makawao’s Baldwin Avenue runs through town, and is lined with Western hardware stores that mingle with sophisticated boutiques and health food stores, and exotic scents emanate from herb shops. Yoga studios and day spas, a staple of the local community, are tucked among the businesses.

the uplands. Flower and fruit farms offer tours, while farmers sell their freshly harvested produce at colorful roadside stands. In the upper reaches, a lavender farm welcomes visitors for tours, workshops and special brunches at the edge of the Polipoli forest. Fueled by the devotion and commitment of the community, an octagonal church, built in 1897 by Portuguese laborers, is still a major Kula attraction. Holy Ghost Catholic Church, also known as Holy Ghost Mission, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 18, 1983; it may be the only historic octagonal building in Hawai‘i.

THE GUIDE

Flying High

Road to Hāna

One of the world’s leading tourism-based aviation companies, Maverick Helicopters celebrates 20 years of operation this year. Entrepreneurs Greg and Brenda Rochna operate the world’s largest and youngest fleet of Airbus EC130/H130 ECO-Star helicopters and hold the industry’s top safety record. Tour options inlcude the Hāna Rainforest Experience, the Aloha Adventure, Sunset Odyssey, Maui Spirit, Moloka‘i Voyage and Maui Dream. www.maverickhelicopter.com/maui, 800.978.0266.

This infamous scenic drive has more than 600 curves and 50 bridges, and passes lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and seaside cliffs. Check road reports and weather conditions prior to leaving. www.hanamaui.com

First Look ‘IAO NEEDLE The ‘Iao Needle is a

1,200-foot cone of hardened lava at the heart of the ‘Iao Valley, a 6.2-acre state park just west of Wailuku in West Maui. The vegetation-shrouded cliffs surrounding the needle are the remains of the Pu‘u Kukui, the crater of the dormant West Maui volcano. The ‘Iao Stream (fed by up to 400 inches of rain per year) cuts through the Valley with excellent hiking trails running alongside and crisscrossing it throughout the park. It is said that the bones of many chieftains are buried in the vicinity of the needle. Olopio, a cave containing the remains of royal elders, is rumored to be hidden somewhere in the valley.

Island Views KA‘ANAPALI Ka‘anapali experienced

a surge of popularity in the ‘60s as developers built resorts here to rival the beaches of Waikiki on Oahu — and

they succeeded. It’s easy to see why this former sugar plantation was chosen as the island’s first planned resort destination: the beaches. It boasts some of Maui’s best such as Kahekili in the north and, of course, the famous Ka‘anapali Beach, which is the area’s showcase beach lined with swanky resorts. Jutting out into the Pacific between these two beaches is Pu’u Keka’a (Black Rock), a massive coral reef that draws scuba and snorkeling enthusiasts the world over. LAHAINA The most frequently visited

spot on the island, Lahaina is the only town in leeward Maui with a genuine downtown. Its primary draw is Front Street, a crowded main drag where a variety of restaurants, shops and hideaway cafes tucked into side streets create a maze of quirky charm. Visit the Old Courthouse, an 1859 structure built from coral that once housed Kamehameha III. The courthouse is shaded by the island’s oldest and

biggest banyan tree, planted in 1873 by missionaries. You can see more of these multi-trunked wonders in nearby Banyan Tree Park. Across the street is the Baldwin Home, the island’s oldest structure. Other points of interest include Lahaina Heritage Museum; Hale Pa’ahao (a jail for drunken sailors when the whaling industry was at its peak in the 1850s; now a museum), and the Wo Hing Museum, where visitors can explore the impact of Chinese immigrants on Lahaina.

Transportation MAUI BUS The Maui Bus has eight

routes. The Kihei Islander Route connects Wailea, Kihei, Ma‘alaea Harbor and Kahului; the Lahaina Islander links Kahului, Ma’alaea Harbor and Lahaina; The Ka‘anapali Islander Route connects Lahaina with the resorts at Ka‘anapali. Fare for each line is $2. co.maui.hi.us. For route and timetable information, please call 808.871.4838.

THE HĀNA POOLS are fed by the stream that flows through the ‘Ohe‘o Gulch in Haleakalā National Park, creating the greatest natural day spa.

History Buffs

A new generation of talented chefs is taking the Maui dining scene to another level. (1) Fork & Salad Maui takes advantage of local products and turns them into healthy salads, sandwiches, soups, stews and juices. Meanwhile, chef/owner Kyle Kawakami is on a roll—literally—with his popular food truck (2) Maui Fresh Streatery. Shrimp Louie salad, cioppino and truffle fries are just a few examples of previous dishes. And the latest entry to the scene is (3) Rua Catering, which is receiving rave reviews for its re-imagined sushi, salmon miso and savory ramen.

Maui’s hiking trails lead to breathtaking views of the island, from craterlike landscapes and cascading waterfalls to lush forests and sweeping ocean panoramas. Located above Seven Sacred Pools and surrounded by verdant vegetation, (1) The Pipiwai Trail is a 4-mile roundtrip hike that ascends 650 feet. Dramatic and always scenic, (2) Waihee Ridge Trail is lined with a lush forest of kukui, guava and ‘ōhi‘a trees. Of course, no trip to Maui would be complete without a hike to (3) Haleakalā, where a winding odyssey of 36 miles of trails awaits adventurists.

Learn about Maui’s past by visiting the (1) Bailey House Museum, where the ground floor holds Maui’s largest public collection of ancient Hawaiian artifacts. In Lāhainā, the (2) Baldwin Home is the oldest house on Maui. Throughout the house, guests encounter family photographs, Dr. Baldwin’s original passport, his books, medical implements and period furniture. While in Lāhainā, stop by the Lāhainā Town Action Committee’s office for a helpful walking map. Take a (3) SelfGuided Tour of the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i.
