White Night Lights Up Melbourne and Ballarat By Jenny Burns

“Sonic Light Bubble”.

AS A YOUNGSTER David Atkins used to visit Ballarat yearly to take part in a show organised by his tap dancing teacher. At the time, never in his wildest dreams did he think he would return to organise a 12-hour artistic extravaganza. Yet in his role as Artistic Director and Executive Producer of White Night Melbourne and White Night Ballarat that’s exactly what he is doing. And he couldn’t be more delighted. “I have never delivered a festival before and White Night is a very special event,” explained Atkins, one of Australia’s most successful producers and artistic directors. White Night Melbourne is being held in the streets, laneways and gardens of Melbourne’s CBD from 7pm to 7am on Saturday 18 February while the inaugural White Night Ballarat will follow on Saturday 4 March. During both 12-hour events, installations, lighting, exhibitions, street performances, film, music and dance will transform the cities into hubs of culture and creativity. While curating White Night has been a learning experience for Atkins he has noticed many similarities to his previous work. “In some ways it’s like a ceremony in that you do a great deal of preparation work and then the event happens in a few hours,” he said. 10 WHERE MELBOURNE I FEBRUARY 2017 I wheretraveler.com

Atkins is very experienced in creating such ceremonies. His extensive work to date includes the Sydney 2000 Olympic ceremonies, the opening, closing and victory ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games and the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Flag Handover ceremony at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. At the same time there have been “Pyrophone”. some major differences in putting together White Night. “While I had my own ideas for creative pieces for both Melbourne and Ballarat, online submissions from organisations interested in participating is an important part of White Night,” he explained. “This year we had around 800 submissions—600 for Melbourne and 200 for Ballarat so putting both events together has been very interesting. We have seen some fantastic pieces from a variety of artists.” Atkins is confident the approximately 110 works chosen for Melbourne White Night and 40 for Ballarat will wow audiences. While regular attendees to Melbourne White Night, now in its 5th year, will notice some changes, they won’t be radical. “Melbourne White Night has been remarkably successful but we are making some adjustments based on public feedback,” Atkins explained.

“We are adding some new components, bringing back a couple of really popular works and introducing some more fun activities, especially for children.” Given Ballarat White Night is new this year it’s more of an unknown, but with such beautiful buildings to work with and a fascinating history Atkins is extremely confident his program will both entertain and captivate. “White Night is all about showcasing Victoria’s renowned arts, culture, entertainment and cutting edge technology’ he said. In 2017 Melbourne will light up once more as visitors from around the world are treated to a party like no other. Ballarat will have its CBD illuminated like never before.” Highlights of the White Night Melbourne program include the monstrous fire-erupting “Pyrophone Juggernaut” at the Melbourne Museum Plaza. The largest hand-operated, multi-octave, fire organ in the world, it’s built entirely from reclaimed metal and industrial salvage. The metallic beast will bellow unearthly music of heart pounding rhythms powered by jets of erupting flame. Flinders Street buildings will come alive from The Forum Theatre to Chapter House with Electric Canvas’ “Fractured Fairytales” projections, a selection of children’s favourite fairytales, inspired by the “Shrek” films and the original “Rocky and Bullwinkle” cartoons of the 60s and 70s. The domed La Trobe Reading Room at the State Library of Victoria is being transformed into an epic underwater 360-degree spectacular with “Seadragon’s Lair”. “Sheree Marris, Brad May and Lisa Greenway have created a world-class animation with soundscapes and underwater cinematography to create a living canvas in Melbourne’s own marine metropolis,” Atkins said. A returning past favourite is a 12-hour dance marathon on Collins Street. “Swing City” will be set to the swinging sounds of big band music from the 30s, 40s and 50s, courtesy of big-band legend 12 WHERE MELBOURNE I FEBRUARY 2017 I wheretraveler.com

John Morrison, and everyone is invited to join in. Birrarung Marr will burst to life with Alex Sanson’s flower-like kinetic sculpture of vast proportions, “Spherophyte”, which unfurls before audience’s eyes. “As you gaze into the beauty of the giant ‘Spherophyte’ the 48 moving arms come alive under lights, ‘breathing’ in an endless, effortless cycle, folding and unfolding as shapes intersect, combine and dissolve,” Atkins explained. The Pitcha Makin Fellas are presenting a collection of 24 portraits celebrating Indigenous faces of Ballarat at St Paul’s Cathedral. Creative studio John Fish has created a majestic sky jellyfish, “The Medusa”, which will float above Hosier Lane. Highlights of the White Night Ballarat program include Nights of Gold which explores the nightlife of Ballarat during its “roaring days” of the gold rush. “The Electric Canvas is presenting an architectural projection across several prominent buildings along Lydiard Street, encompassing three distinct themes relating to mid-1800s nightlife in Ballarat,” Atkins explained. “Wadawurrung Walking with Waa” invites festival goers to take a walk through time from the Aboriginal Creation Story to the present day. “Crate Expectations” is a playful robotic sculpture made from vintage packing crates, moving furniture and disembodied limbs, which will perform choreography of warped sound and sequenced lighting to draw audiences from the dark night into its warm, dreamlike glow. “Crate Expectations” will roll through the streets, seeking out and responding to audiences throughout the night. “More Than 1 Nation” is a collaboration that sees the patterns and colours of the Pitcha Makin Fellas’ paintings, cut outs and stamps transposed by The Electric Canvas onto the former Bank of NSW building in Ballarat, constructing a visually beautiful tale of redemption, honour, triumph and renewal. n For more information on White Night Melbourne visit whitenightmelbourne.com.au. A Bevy of Beers

5th Annual Great Australian Beer Festival. Photo: Cormac Hanrahan.

LOVERS OF FINE CRAFT BEER ARE TRULY IN THEIR ELEMENT THIS MONTH. BY JENNY BURNS HERE IN VICTORIA there is an ever growing list of microbreweries to explore. Geelong’s Great Australian Beer Festival (gabfgeelong.com.au) is also on, meaning even more beers to try! The festival, on 18 February at Geelong’s Racecourse, features over 200 Australian beers and ciders to try. There’s also a series of free seminars hosted by industry experts, while a designated international beer hall features brews from around the world. However, it’s the local brews which are expected to attract the greatest interest. According to those in the know the beers produced by our small independently owned boutique breweries are amongst the best in the world.

As a result the quality and variety of beers on offer is increasing as more small producers enter the market. Fortunately there are many ways to try their ‘amber nectar’. A number of the breweries are open to the public at least a couple of days a week, while a number of companies also offer guided tours of their microbreweries. Many of the beers are also available at local bars and hotels. One of Melbourne’s most popular microbreweries, Mountain Goat, is also considered one of the ‘founding fathers’ of the industry. It opened 19 years ago and its beers can now be found all over Australia and in some overseas countries. Smaller volume beers are

brewed at the company’s Richmond based microbrewery (80 North Street, Richmond. goatbeer.com.au). Visit the brewery on a Wednesday or Friday from 5pm and you can taste all the beers while free brewery tours are offered on a Wednesday from 6.30pm. While Mountain Goat was started by two men, Two Birds Brewing (136 Hall Street, Spotswood. twobirdsbrewing. com.au) is Australia’s first femaleowned brewing company. It launched its inaugural beer, a Golden Ale, in 2011. Since then the brewery has gone from strength to strength, opening their brewery and tasting room in the inner west in 2014. Visit the tasting room on Thursdays and Fridays from 4pm and on weekends from noon and you find fresh beer on tap and a food menu which offers everything from a snack to full size meals. Tours of the brewery are on offer every Saturday at 12.30pm. Colonial Brewing Co. was one of the first breweries to open in Western Australia and it’s now also in Port Melbourne (89 Bertie Street, Port Melbourne. colonialbrewingco.com.au/ port-melbourne/). The brewery is open on Thursday nights offering pizza and

pots from $10 while Friday is ‘food truck night’. Visit Boatrocker Brewery’s Barrel Room (34 Macbeth Street, Braeside. boatrocker.com.au/barrelroom/) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and you can try beers produced by the 2015 winner of Champion Small Brewery at the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA). It’s open Fridays from 4pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from noon. If you’re interested in learning more about the craft brewing process then 3 Ravens could be the place for you (1 Theobald Street, Thornbury. 3ravens.com.au). Winner of the 2014 AIBA for Champion Small Australian Brewery, the brewery offers tours and masterclasses with guided beer tasting. A number of companies operate tours to microbreweries. Aussie Brewery Tours (aussiebrewerytours.com.au) for example, offer daily tours taking in some of the best and lesser known beer and cider producers. Melbourne By Foot’s (melbournebyfoot.com/beer-loversguide-to-melbourne) Beer Lover Guide to Melbourne tour focuses on beers produced by Melbourne and Victorian microbreweries. The tour explores Melbourne’s more recent liberal liquor licensing laws, the birth of the city’s laneway bars as well as the explosion of microbreweries. Join Melbourne Sports Tours’ (melbournesportstours.com.au) Horses, Wine, Beer Tour and you’ll get to try numerous beers produced at Holgate Brewery in Woodend. The tour also includes a visit to the wonderful Living Legends at Woodlands Historic Park (home to many of Australia’s favourite retired champion race horses) and lunch and wine tasting at Gisborne Peak Estate. The Victorian Association of Microbreweries Inc (vami.org.au) is a useful reference source for microbreweries around Victoria as is Tourism Victoria (visitvictoria.com.au). Spot a Penguin

Join the crowds and stroll down St Kilda Pier, past the historic St Kilda Kiosk, to see the sun slide into the sea at sunset. Continue further down the breakwater to catch a glimpse of the little penguin colony (now numbering more than 1,000) right in the heart of the city. Summer is the best time to spot the little guys as it’s breeding season. Volunteers ask you to turn off your flash and leave your selfie stick at home. The pier offers spectacular views of Melbourne city and Little Blue restaurant is a good spot to enjoy it all.

Every Sunday the St Kilda Esplanade Market is thronged with people fossicking through the 140 art and craft stalls. The market, which has been going since the 1970s, is full of interesting characters and their handmade wares. Also keep an eye out for the monthly Veg Out farmers’ market for local produce.

Ride a Rickshaw Just a short (#96, #16 or #12) tram ride from the city, St Kilda Beach has been drawing in the crowds since the 19th century. Not a place to rest on its laurels, the foreshore is having a facelift. The iconic Stokehouse restaurant on the beachfront reopened in November. Grab a fish ’n’ chips from Paper Fish or try the popular restaurants inside. Next door the St Kilda Life Saving Club has just reopened while the famous Palais Theatre is under wraps for a $20 million restoration (but still operating as a live music venue). The St Kilda Foreshore Trail is a lovely 11-kilometre walk. Why not order a St Kilda Rickshaw to pick you up at the end for an unforgettable lazy ride home? Left: Dessert from Stokehouse. Toast Your Friends

Wonder where the locals go for a drink? Misery Guts (it’s anything but) is a relaxed watering hole in a historic building on Grey Street. Run by Jules Pleadin, it has a great drinks list and snacky bites. Try the St. Hotel for a cool drink, Lona for pintxos or The Snug Public House, a new Irish pub. For gourmet cheese and wine, head to Milk the Cow fromagerie.

5

Do a Cake Crawl

A cake crawl down Acland Street is a must—visitors ogle the windows of the cake shops that have been sweetening lives since the 1930s. Start your day with a delicious brekkie at Il Fornaio, try lunch at buzzy Fitzrovia overlooking the park and maybe a sunset drink at Republica on the beachfront. Join the bright young things at newish Matcha Mylkbar, a vegan café known for its beetroot lattes. For dinner, Good Food Guide stalwarts include Cicciolina, Café Di Stasio, Lau’s Family Kitchen, Circa, Araliya and Luxembourg. Donovans is for celebrating within a splash of the sea while Claypots cooks up sea critters to perfection.

Be Creative

St Kilda has always been a haven for artists and creative types. On the quiet end of Acland Street, look at the beautiful historic mansions, including Linden New Art, which has been a gallery for 30 years. There’s always an interesting show on and it’s a good place to pick up reasonably priced art. Pop into Tolarnos Hotel to see the famous murals by legendary Mirka Mora. For edgy street art, explore the laneways off Acland Street.

CIRQUE DU SOLEIL STAGES ‘KOOZA’ “KOOZA”, Cirque du Soleil’s latest Australian production, is on at Flemington Racecourse. The show marks a return to the origins of Cirque du Soleil, combining two circus traditions—acrobatic performance and the art of clowning. The show highlights the physical demands of human performance in all its splendour and fragility, presented in a colourful mélange that emphasises slapstick humour. It also explores themes of strength, fragility, turmoil, harmony, fear, identity, recognition and power. The show follows The Innocent as he takes a journey of self-discovery. That journey brings him into contact with numerous comic characters such as the King, the Trickster and the Obnoxious Tourist and his Bad Dog. “The Book of Mormon”. Ladies in Black The award-winning Australian play “Ladies in Black” is playing at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre from 25 February. From the adaptation of Madeleine St John’s 1993 novel, the musical is a celebration of glamour, gowns and growing up in 1950s Australia. In 1950s Sydney when the city is on the cusp of becoming cosmopolitan, young high school graduate Lisa takes a holiday job at Goodes, the most prestigious department store in town. In that summer of innocence, a world of possibilities opens up as she befriends the ladies of the women’s frocks department—including her new mentor, the exotic European Magda, mysterious mistress of the dresses. The show features over 20 original songs written by Tim Finn and a stunning range of some 30 custom-designed and created dresses and suits. From 25 February, Regent Theatre, 191 Collins Street, Melbourne. 1300 111 011. ticketmaster.com.au

Dracula’s Cabaret Dracula’s brand new show “Resurrection” plays like a greatest hits on scratched vinyl. It brings together the most requested acts of the past decade, revamped with striking costumes, mesmerising special effects and serrated edge comedy. “Resurrection” blends music production acts, optical illusion, animatronic sculpture and rock-circus, with a song list that moves across the AM dial from Arctic Monkeys to Blondie. Add a dangerously talented cast that look like they’ve been attacked with a bedazzler by a drag queen stylist and you start to get the picture. It’s flashy, kitsch hysteria, with no act too audacious and no heel too high. Tickets include dinner, show, ghost train ride and the amazing new simulated graveyard experience. ‘Kinky Boots’ at Her Majesty’s The musical “Kinky Boots” is now playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save the family business from bankruptcy, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola, a fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos. Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he’s meant to be. Melbourne Theatre Company Plays The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging several plays during February. Garson Kanin’s “Born Yesterday” is a screwball romance that looks at the dark side of politics and the power of knowledge. Opening on 10 February is “John”, a new work from Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Annie Baker. Described as a ghost tale, love story and dark comedy, the play tells of Jenny and Elias who arrive late one evening at a kitschy, civil war-themed B&B in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Awkward and harried, they are a couple on the edge. It’s a feeling exacerbated by the sensation they’re being watched. Not just by Mertis and her eccentric friend Genevieve, but by the countless dolls and figurines that occupy their spooky lodgings. This might not be the right place, or the right company, for Jenny and Elias to mend their fraying relationship. “Born Yesterday”, until 25 February, Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank. “John”, from 10 February, Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne. 8688 0800. mtc.com.au

It will be a night to remember, as you say farewell to a legend. 25 February, Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne Park, Batman Avenue, Melbourne. 132 849. ticketek.com.au

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG The hit English play, “The Play That Goes Wrong”, opens at the Comedy Theatre on 22 February. The comic play introduces ‘The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’ which is attempting to put on a 1920s murder mystery. As the title suggests, everything that can go wrong does, as the accident-prone thespians battle on against all the odds to get to their final curtain call. “The Play That Goes Wrong” has won a number of awards including the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy 2015, Broadway World UK Winner for Best New Play 2015 and Whats On Stage Award Winner for Best New Comedy 2014. Simon M-Rock’s Exhibition at Ballarat

The Art Gallery of Ballarat is staging “Simon M-Rock: The hangman’s garden” a series of drawings by Ballarat-based illustrator Simon Mroczkowski, known as M-Rock. The exhibition shows 26 of the artist’s friends being killed off in alphabetical order. The exhibition is inspired by Edward Gorey’s 1963 book, “The Gashlycrumb Tinies”, which describes the demise of a series of unfortunate children, starting with ‘A is for Amy who fell down the stairs…’. For this series, M-Rock presents an individual verse about each of his characters, together with a drawing based on their demise. While each of the characters, from Arkansel Fawn through to Zulland Haas, meet with a grisly end at the hands of the artist, the morbid theme has been softened by infusing the drawings with beauty and elements of nature.

PRECINCTS COLLINS STREET

Melbourne Town Hall, Collins Street. Photo: Josie Withers Photography/Visit Victoria.

STREET OF STYLE ENJOY COLLINS STREET’S STUNNING ARCHITECTURE, AND FASCINATING HISTORY, AS YOU SNAP UP STYLISH BARGAINS AND TERRIFIC TREATS. COLLINS STREET exudes style and

glamour. It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of

a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands.

28 WHERE MELBOURNE I FEBRUARY 2017 I wheretraveler.com

However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches— the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church.

Given the quality of their neighbours, several luxury hotels fit perfectly in the mix including Novotel Melbourne on Collins, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, Grand Hyatt Melbourne and The Westin Melbourne. Delicious food is on offer on Collins Street. For pralines, gelato, gateaux and chocolate, you won’t go past Gânache Chocolate Lounge. With its European ambience and impeccable service, they have the widest range of handmade

The section between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets features a number of historic and more recently built arcades which are home to a huge selection of chain and concept stores selling clothing and homewares. Here you’ll also find the Block Arcade. This arcade between Collins and Elizabeth Streets has been one of the places to go shopping since it was built back in the 1890s.

It comes as no surprise to discover the Block is classified by the National Trust and is on the register of the National Estate. There’s so much interest in the Arcade that guided historic tours are on offer. The Block is also home to one of Melbourne’s most historic tearooms. You’ll discover a fascinating collection of young designer and retro clothes shops selling everything from techno trance wear to fetish clothing, bookshops, galleries filled with work by local artists, cafés and restaurants. Indeed Fitzroy and Collingwood are home to some of the best eating establishments in Melbourne. In more recent times young professionals, artists and students have moved to the area. Brunswick Street provides the perfect introduction to Fitzroy’s culture and atmosphere. You will see quaint and quirky shops and eclectic art on offer in studios, galleries and workshops. wellbeing, how about booking in to one of the region’s many luxurious day spas? Or, if it’s food for the soul you are after— fulfil every need at gourmet patisseries, charming cellar doors, or award-winning first-class restaurants. CULTURALLY INFORMATIVE Founded in 1884, the Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest and largest regional gallery in Australia. Home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Australian paintings in the nation, works featured here are just a small selection from a holding that extends from convict artists of Van Diemen’s Land to the present day. General entry is free and special exhibitions are regularly alternated. EXHIBITIONS AT THE ART GALLERY OF BALLARAT Art Gallery of Ballarat is staging several exhibitions this month. “Simon M-Rock: The Hangman’s Garden” features a series of drawings by Ballarat-based illustrator Simon Mroczkowski, known as M-Rock. There are 26 drawings of his friends being killed off in alphabetical order. The drawings are inspired by Edward Gorey’s 1963 book “The Gashlycrumb Tinies”, which describes the demise of a series

of unfortunate children, starting with ‘A is for Amy who fell down the stairs…’ For this series, M-Rock presents an individual verse about each of his characters, together with a drawing based on their demise. “Very Limited Edition: Commissioned Prints” brings together the Gallery’s holdings of works on paper produced by the Print Collectors Club in Britain from the 1920s and by the Print Council of Australia since 1967. Australian artists represented include Alun Leach-Jones, Barbara Brash, Noel Counihan, Danny Moynihan, Robert Grieve, Franz Kempf, Mary MacQueen, Murray Walker, Allan Mitelman, Eric Thake, and David Rose. The “Ballarat National Photographic Exhibition” attracts entries from

photographers across the country and has been presented by the Art Gallery of Ballarat since 1997. For this year’s exhibition, exhibited prints have been selected for display from nearly 1,000 images submitted by entrants from right across the country. All exhibitions are free. The gallery is located at 40 Lydiard Street North, Ballarat and is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Here you can learn about the lavender and olives grown on the property, wander around herb, cottage and potage gardens and buy locally made goods in the shop. These goods make great presents, especially if you’re looking for something uniquely Australian. Indeed, there’s plenty of great retail therapy available in the area. You’ll find everything from great art at galleries such as The Convent to Alpaca Passion, which sells alpaca-made products. The myki Visitor Value Pack is available from the PTV Hub at Southern Cross Station, the Melbourne Visitor Centre at Federation Square and SkyBus terminals at Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station. Free Tram Zone The Free Tram Zone in Melbourne’s CBD includes the area of the Queen Victoria Market, Victoria Harbour in Docklands, Spring Street, Flinders Street Station and Federation Square. Travel on trams within this zone is free, and you won’t need a myki, however, if your journey starts or finishes outside the boundaries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader in the normal way to make sure you have a valid ticket.

Concierge on a day tour of the Yarra Valley with Autopia Tours.

circus acts into the stage show, it was quite spectacular to see. With a traditional ringmaster running the show, there were performers from several countries including Mexico, Italy and Canada. After lunch at Rochford’s Winery, we visited one of my favourite brewers in the valley, Napoleone Brewery and Ciderhouse. After a few samples of their ciders we ended the day with a quick tour of their beautiful grounds.

At the Regent Theatre on Collins Street we saw the show “Circus 1903”. Concierge attended a preview and were very impressed. Combining traditional
