When it’s time for your daily jolt of caffeine, the Valley is home to many cozy coffee shops. Settle in with the eclectic and hip vibe at (1) Sip Coffee & Beer House in Scottsdale. Here, the coffee beans used are provided by local roaster Cartel Coffee Lab. Beers, cocktails and food round out the menu. At (2) Cupz Coffee enjoy beverages made from coffee purchased from local roaster Cortez Coffee Company along with smoothies and a variety of food, all served in a laidback locale staffed mainly by Arizona State University students. (3) Press Coffee roasts its coffee in small batches to ensure quality and consistency. There are multiple Valley locations, and each offers a welcoming and unique atmosphere. Enjoy coffee and some food, or stop by for the weekly cupping class.
While much of the country is blanketed by snow, the Valley experiences temperatures ideal for outdoor activity. Guides at (1) Arizona Outdoor Adventures (A.O.A.) take participants along half-day mountain bike or road bike tours and Sonoran Desert hiking trips, among other guided expeditions. Explore deeper into the desert aboard a pink Jeep with (2) Pink Adventure Tours, which operates three sightseeing trips throughout the Valley: Cactus Canyon, Sidewinder Ridge and Sonoran Desert. And hikers find multiple trails ranging less than a 1/4-mile to three miles in length at (3) Papago Park, which overlooks Phoenix Zoo and Desert Botanical Garden. Find a picturesque view of the sunset and Phoenix’s skyline at Hole-In-The-Rock, only a 1/10-mile trek from the parking lot.
Local artists, makers and business owners are easy to come by in a city that has earned a spot on the map for its start-up and localbusiness culture. Find cactus-themed wall art, desert-inspired coasters and shirts with the Arizona-state outline at (1) Bunky Boutique. Head east to (2) Queen Creek Olive Mill for a range of edibles—olive oils, stuffed olives and tapenades—made with the olives grown on-site. The olivespa products and other specialty goods by local partners round out the selection of products found at the olive mill and several Marketplace locations around the Valley. Bookworms in search of local authors frequent (3) Changing Hands Bookstore. The eclectic selection of both new and used and local and national titles is often enjoyed at the on-site First Draft Bar.
