“The story behind the Mystery Castle sounds as if it came straight out of a movie. A father, Boyce Luther Gulley, leaves behind his family and travels south after a terminal diagnosis and spends the next decade building a castle for his daughter. It’s a tale that intertwines every emotion. But this castle and its history are not pulled from a movie script—the Mystery Castle exists in real life at the base of Phoenix’s South Mountain. Touring this architectural wonder and getting to know the property’s caretaker, who provided firsthand insights to Boyce’s daughter Mary Lou, was an enthralling experience.” VS 38

A LABOR OF LOVE The unique story behind the Mystery Castle.

©CHRIS LOOMIS; FACING PAGE: ©SUE STOKES/SHUTTERSTOCK

BY KIMBERLY M. GUNNING

Caretaker Ramon Gastelum easily identifies his favorite room of the Mystery Castle—The Siesta Room, he says. Also known as The Saguaro Room, Gastelum enjoys napping on the pull-out bed there with the breeze flowing through the open window. The room was built around the spines of a saguaro cactus. Spines were also used in the furnishings of several stools and tables, and rims from the builder’s Stutz Bearcat act as window frames. Nestled at the base of South Mountain, the 18-room castle was built using a myriad of reclaimed, recycled and desert-originating materials. Boyce Luther Gulley’s venture to build a castle for his daughter Mary Lou began in 1930 and lasted an unexpected 15 years, until his death in 1945. A TERMINAL PROGNOSIS The story begins in the Pacific Northwest, where Gulley lived with his wife, Frances, and his young daughter, Mary Lou. During trips to the beach, Mary Lou would build sandcastles, but as the tide rolled in and washed the castles away, her tears were always soon to follow. Gulley promised his daughter he would one day build her a castle that wouldn’t wash away. WHERE GUEST B OOK

VS75

Diagnosed with tuberculosis and given only months to live, Gulley followed his doctor’s orders and traveled from his home in Seattle to Arizona—without the knowledge of his family. Frances eventually learned from the doctor the reason for Gulley’s departure, but despite letters sent throughout the years, Gulley never wrote back.

A CASTLE FOR MARY LOU Before he passed, more than 15 years after setting the first stones for the castle’s foundation, the story is told that Gulley had his attorney notify his wife and daughter VS 76

W H E R E G U E ST B O O K

of a surprise he had left for them. The catch? His family needed to come to Phoenix to claim it. “They arrive to discover this mysterious-looking castle that he’s left for them, complete with 18 rooms, including a chapel, purgatory and a dungeon,” says Trimble. A note from her father asked Mary Lou to abide by one rule: not to open the 9-foot trapdoor inside the castle for two years or until she sold it—whichever came first. Mary Lou and her mother never left and, after two years, found in it two $500 bills, gold nuggets, the deed to the castle and a pile of letters Mary Lou had written her father. In 1948, Life magazine published a piece about the property, which is now listed on the Arizona Historic Register, that garnered attention and interest from the public. People began to visit, hoping for a tour, and Mary Lou was proud to show them around. Tour season has always begun Oct. 1 of each year, says Gastelum, who has worked at the property since 1982 and, at one point, led some of the tours. He describes Mary Lou as being “a real tough lady, but real fair.” She sent Gastelum to school—first to learn English, then to get his diploma, followed by a college degree. Before her death in 2010, Mary Lou established the Mystery Castle Foundation in order to ensure that the property would remain unaltered and open to visitors. Today, Gastelum’s sons lead the tours, explaining the many unique intricacies of the castle and the story of a father’s love that built it all.

A note from her father asked Mary Lou to abide by one rule: not to open the 9-foot trapdoor inside the castle for two years or until she sold the property— whichever came first.

©CHRIS LOOMIS

A ONE-MAN VENTURE “In Arizona, I think Boyce needed a reason for being and that morphed into the building of a castle for Mary Lou,” says Arizona State Historian Marshall Trimble. According to the Mystery Castle Foundation, Gulley staked out unclaimed land in Phoenix for free by researching city documents at the library. “He had limited funds, so he began scrounging around the Salt River Valley looking for materials to build his dream castle,” says Trimble. The living room was the first room Gulley built, and then he expanded from there. He worked without a floor plan; the longer he stayed alive, the larger the castle grew. Gulley included a functional kitchen with a woodburning oven and gas stove, and thought ahead to set the structure for indoor plumbing. A collection of tiny rooms to the west of the main castle was intended to be Mary Lou’s playhouse, though by the time Mary Lou arrived she was long past her childhood days. For building materials, Gulley often frequented salvage yards and took whatever he thought useful. He sourced hundreds of half-melted bricks, deemed as junk, from a local brickyard. These bricks, which are found throughout the castle, are now an expensive architectural element made popular by Frank Lloyd Wright’s use. The castle itself was a creatively cultivated project, and the furnishings were no less eclectic—according to the Foundation, the bed and dresser were given to Gulley by Gov. George W. P. Hunt, the first governor of Arizona, and Winston Churchill’s mother gave him two redupholstered chairs.

GULLEY BUILT THE HOUSE WITHOUT A FLOOR PLAN, USING WHATEVER MATERIALS HE COULD FIND AT SALVAGE YARDS. HE ALSO SOURCED HUNDREDS OF HALF-MELTED BRICKS, DEEMED AS JUNK, FROM A LOCAL BRICKYARD. TODAY, THOSE BRICKS ARE CONSIDERED AN EXPENSIVE ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT.

Traditional Mexican street tacos are little bites made for people on the go—soft corn tortillas purchased from a street cart and filled with an amazing variety of flavors. Today, the taco scene across Arizona is a trend all its own, with chefs taking the traditional Mexican street taco and redefining it. Throw away any ideas you have about what a taco might be or should be, and explore the fusion of flavors wrapped up inside the new world of tacos. According to David Tyda, co-founder of the annual Arizona Taco Festival (Oct. 21-22, 2017; more than 50 restaurants serving $2 tacos), one of the best tacos in the Valley of the Sun is the Spanish Octopus with charred tomato sauce, served at Tarbell’s Tavern in Phoenix. The octopus is cooked tender and served in a corn tortilla on a bed of shredded cabbage. The charred tomato sauce has a rich cumin spice, giving it that little bit of kick you don’t find in other taco dishes. Although not a traditional Mexican spot, Tarbell’s still has a fun little list of unique tacos, which Tyda raves about. While he’s a fan of the Spanish Octopus, he also feels the chef ’s take on al pastor “is amazing.” “It doesn’t come off the traditional trompo, but it’s the very definition of mouthwatering,” he says. Taco al pastor is a dish developed in Central Mexico in which the meat, usually pork, is marinated with dried chilies, spices and pineapple. It is then slowly cooked on a vertical rotisserie called a trompo, thinly sliced with a large knife, and served on tortillas with onion, coriander, pineapple and other ingredients. At Tarbell’s Tavern, the Slow Roasted Pork al Pastor is served with charred pineapple and guajillo chiles, giving a more traditional dish a bit of a modern flair. One of the Valley’s more creative taco settings is Taco Guild in Central Phoenix. Located in a historic old church built in 1893 as Smith’s Chapel for the princely sum of

$30, it later became the Bethel Methodist Church. A few years ago, it became the home to some pretty amazing tacos. Taco Guild uses culinary artisans to mix Old World and New World tastes to create amazing flavors from farm-fresh ingredients. One of the most incredible creations by the Taco Guild artisans is the Peking Duck Taco. It’s available on corn or flour tortillas, or in a lettuce cup that really allows the flavors of the duck to shine through. These little gems have a plum sauce, fire-roasted poblano apricot compote and Brie cheese. There is also the Molida Lamb with Creole aïoli and blue cheese, which is topped with thin sweet potato straws. In Phoenix’s trendy Uptown area, Joyride Taco House blends East and West with its tasty Chicken Tinga Tacos. As with Taco Guild, the tasty treats at Joyride are small enough that you can sample a variety of the offerings. At SOL Cocina, diners rave about the Vampiro Taco—a mix of Jack and Oaxacan cheeses, Serrano chilies and scallions melted between two corn tortillas, giving it crunch and soft, oozy goodness at the same time. That is then stuffed with soy-marinated carne asada, guacamole and pico de gallo, and topped with cotija cheese, chipotle aïoli and cilantro. If you prefer something totally offbeat and/or vegetarian, opt for SOL Cocina’s Spice-Roasted Butternut Squash Tacos. These little veggie delights feature roasted butternut squash on a corn tortilla with melted cheese, green chile salsa, smoky red pepper salsa and crispy fried onions. North Scottsdale’s The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa’s restaurant deseo features Nuevo Latino cuisine, which blends traditional Latin American ingredients with a contemporary culinary style. The Millionaire Tacos feature lobster and hamachi marinated in Japanese mayo, yuzu and a Japanese chile called togarashi. They’re then finished with lemon oil-marinated Ahi tuna and served on taro root shaped like traditional taco shells and garnished with picked jalapeños. WHERE GUEST B OOK

A COCONUT WATER BUZZ Locally founded Coco 21 is hydrating the 21-and-up crowd.

Brian Kaplan launched the Coco 21 brand in Phoenix and plans to bring it to other states. Facing page: A cocktail made with Coco21 Pineapple.

Four years ago, Phoenix local Brian Kaplan met a man who told him about a trend gaining momentum in his country of Brazil—people were drinking coconut water mixed with spirits. Around the same time frame, coconut water had already begun flying off supermarket shelves in the United States. The water variety is known to contain sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium and vitamin C, among other minerals, and is sought-after for its hydration and health benefits. But, the combination of coconut water and spirits had not yet been commercially conceptualized. The conversation set the wheels into motion for Kaplan, a University of Arizona graduate, and he began to research the idea of ready-to-serve coconut water cocktails. “Coconut water tastes good and is good for you,” says Kaplan. “As a mixer with alcohol, it really smooths out the flavor without overstepping it, offering something totally unique that is low in calories and sugar while not tasting artificial or too sweet.” Kaplan combines refreshing coconut water with fivetime-distilled premium vodka for his gluten-free bottled cocktails. His product, called Coco 21, launched in stores in February 2016. “We’ve created something that tastes delicious and is

better for you than most alternatives out there,” he says. The four varieties—Original, Pineapple, Cocorita and Guava—are found in statewide locations of Total Wine & More, Fry’s Food & Drug, Albertsons, Bashas’ and Safeway, and each flavor is under 70 to 90 calories per serving. Several Valley restaurants, including Scottsdale’s S & V Urban Italian, are also pouring the beverage. Bar manager Maggie McAtee serves up Coco 21 Pineapple on the rocks, garnished with a pineapple wedge. “We love that you feel guilt-free when consuming this product, and it entices you to have a second or third cocktail without the worry of feeling crummy the next day,” she says. “It is easy to serve and it is even easier to sell.” With a background in creating and marketing various health and beauty products that have been sold in retail outlets ranging from Walgreens to Nordstrom, Kaplan is no stranger to bringing big ideas to the marketplace. And looking to the future, he is focused on expanding Coco 21 outside of Arizona. “I love that I was able to start the brand in my hometown,” he shares. “I love doing events and samplings, and seeing how happy consumers are when they try it for the first time.” WHERE GUEST B OOK

FASHION FORWARD The Phoenix fashion scene is haute. BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAM

©MARK PETERMAN/PHOENIX ART MUSEUM

Most people think of New York, Paris and Milan when they imagine the world’s fashion capitals. But fashionistas can find a dedicated fashion design gallery in the heart of Phoenix. The Phoenix Art Museum, the largest art museum in the Southwest— drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors yearly—is home to the Arizona Costume Institute, and retains a collection of more than 7,000 fashion objects dating from the 18th century to the present as part of its Fashion Design Department. SOMETHING REALLY SPECIAL The Arizona Costume Institute was originally founded in 1966 as a way to support the new Fashion Design Department at a time when fashion was not always seen as an art form. The museum continued to grow the collection, opening the Kelly Ellman Gallery in 2006. In addition to the permanent collection, the Kelly Ellman Fashion Design Gallery enables the museum to showcase two exhibitions a year. Dennita Sewell has been curator of fashion design since January 2000, when she came to Phoenix from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. “We have something really special here,” says Sewell, who explains that only a handful of art museums across the country have dedicated fashion design galleries. In fact, the collection in Phoenix is one of only about 15 across the country. “It is increasingly special to study [fashion] objects firsthand.” WHERE GUEST B OOK

THE FASHION DESIGN GALLERY’S IMPRESSIVE ROSTER The thousands of objects in the fashion design gallery, varying from men’s and women’s clothing to shoes and other accessories, are part art form and part cultural statement. Because the objects range from the 18th century to the present, they are a way to examine our history as a people, as well as to examine how social and economic attributes change fashion. The clothing in the gallery is primarily from American and European designers. Some in the permanent collection include Ralph Rucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Claire McCardell, Geoffrey Beene, Halston, Pauline Trigère, Balenciaga and Coco Chanel. From the very beginning, the museum has relied on the kindness of its benefactors. When the Phoenix Art Museum established the Fashion Design Department in 1966 and created the Arizona Costume Institute, it relied on the fundraising efforts of volunteers to establish the original collection. The first curator was hired in 1970, VS 86

and donations over the years have included gifts from the likes of Nancy Reagan. In 2016, the museum received a $2 million endowment from longtime patron Jacquie Dorrance to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Arizona Costume Institute. SHAPING THE NEXT FACES IN FASHION A recognized face in the art world both nationally and internationally, Sewell is influencing the genre not only via her work at Phoenix Art Museum, but with her newest endeavor, which brings together Phoenix Art Museum and Arizona State University (ASU). Beginning with the Fall 2017 semester, ASU will offer a Bachelor of Arts degree in fashion, a program headed by Sewell. The match between museum and university seems a natural one for Sewell. “There is so much interest in fashion now,” she explains. Reality television has played in role in showcasing how the fashion industry works, helping would-be designers believe in the possibility of turning fashion designs into a reality. But Sewell points out that there is so much more to the fashion industry—and she hopes that the partnership with ASU can help showcase that. “There are so many more jobs in the fashion industry—lights, press, merchandising, the arts,” she explains. “As a research institute, ASU can explore new avenues. For example, students can take classes in sustainability. It provides a tremendous starting point for exploring the fashion industry.” Another huge bonus for students in Phoenix is having the museum’s fashion archive at hand. The thousands of fashion pieces in the permanent collection give students an edge from the very beginning. Sewell says she is already beginning special topics and workshops that will serve as a way for students to learn, and for the public to observe the skills and talents as the fashion undergrads share their visions and expertise with the visiting public. There is also a major research component at Phoenix Art Museum. The Astaire Library of Costumes, housed in the Museum’s Art Research Library, houses rare books and prints on costumes and textiles.

“It’s the vibrancy and creativity of the objects that open people’s eyes to new ideas.” —Dennita Sewell, curator of fashion design, Phoenix Art Museum

That ability to see history up-close and personal, to experience everyday objects—clothing and accessories— as part of history is what makes the fashion design collection so important to Sewell. “It’s the vibrancy and creativity of the objects that open people’s eyes to new ideas,” she explains. And, having that as part of the fabric of everyday Phoenix life helps make the city more diverse and more cosmopolitan. “It adds to our worldliness here in Phoenix,” she says. In addition to overseeing the permanent collection, Sewell has brought such major exhibits to the museum as “Hollywood Red Carpet,” which featured gowns from actresses such as Jessica Chastain, Glenn Close, Amy Adams and Renée Zellweger; “Hollywood Costume,” with costumes from “Star Wars,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Titanic,” “Harry Potter” and more; and “The White Shirt According to Me. Gianfranco Ferré,” an exhibition featuring 27 of Ferré’s most significant white shirts—and the only such exhibit to be shown in North America.

ALL ABOUT TOWN Get acquainted with the Valley of the Sun by visiting some of its foremost cities and towns.

DOWNTOWN SCOTTSDALE Scottsdale’s downtown pulsates with a concentration of chic boutiques, bold dining destinations and busy nightlife venues. Old Town preserves the Old West with hitchin’ posts. Galleries line both sides of several blocks in the arts district. Performing and visual arts flourish at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Museum of Contemporary Art. And the area encompassing Scottsdale Fashion Square, the Waterfront, SouthBridge and 5th Avenue might equate to more shops per square foot than anywhere else in the Valley.

CAVE CREEK & CAREFREE The far north towns of Cave Creek and Carefree maintain an unfettered desert charm that other cities have conceded in favor of urban convenience. Cave Creek was settled in the 1870s and developed by miners and ranchers, and is now home to unfussy restaurants and art galleries. Carefree is younger but more refined, established in the 1950s as a planned community, and now home to multimillion-dollar addresses. VS100

CORRIDOR The Phoenix neighborhoods of

Arcadia and Biltmore enjoy daily views of Camelback Mountain, and tend to have velvety lawns and well-loved homes. Residents of Paradise Valley, between Camelback and Mummy mountains, stake broad boundaries with bougainvilleas and ornamental wrought iron, or experiment with xeriscape (desert-on-purpose) yards. For a pleasant tour by car, cruise any stretch of Lincoln or McDonald drives. To actually sample the prestigious local lifestyle, stop at a shop, bistro or luxury grocery store along Camelback Road.

NORTH SCOTTSDALE Beyond downtown, Scottsdale segues into a suburban paradise of vigorously landscaped residences and golf courses. Homeowners’ associations enforce color-palette laws and commercial projects are held to certain standards, but a few exceptions are endured with pride. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West has challenged architectural rules since 1937, encouraging apprentices to build and live in harmony with site-specific surroundings. Shopping center el Pedregal was designed in the image of a colorful Moroccan market. But even mansions built into cliffs, a hiking trail carved around Pinnacle Peak, and hot air balloon flights over undeveloped desert are executed with aesthetic flair.

ALL ABOUT TOWN

Suns and Diamondbacks games were nothing. In recent years, downtown Phoenix has taken on bigger challenges—an overhaul of convention facilities, the state’s first light rail transit system, the expansion of ASU from Tempe, urban infill development—to live up to its status as the nation’s sixth-largest city. There was plenty to build on already: Phoenix Art Museum, state theater, ballet, symphony and opera corps, and the American Indian artifact collections of the Heard Museum. Lately, entrepreneurs have been transforming old houses and empty lots into galleries, cafes, boutiques and modern dwellings.

FOUNTAIN HILLS There’s little wonder where the town of Fountain Hills got its name once you’ve witnessed the inspirational fountain shoot water 560 feet into the air, which it does at the top of every daylight hour. All roads in this meandering, upscale suburb east of Scottsdale eventually lead to the lake and its enormous manmade geyser; along the way are palatial homes, velveteen golf courses, charming shops and welcoming restaurants. Keep on going through this ’burb to reach McDowell Mountain Park–the perfect escape for an easy in-town hike with spectacular out-of-town views. VS 102

GLENDALE & PEORIA University of Phoenix Stadium didn’t put Glendale on the map, but it did introduce the West Valley city to the universe when it hosted the Super Bowl in 2008 (the big game returned in 2015). The headquarters of the NFL Arizona Cardinals is neighbored by Gila River Arena, home of the NHL Arizona Coyotes, a Tanger Outlet center and Westgate Entertainment District. Downtown Glendale, meanwhile, thrills more quietly with antiques and craft shops. In the city of Peoria, the Challenger Space Center keeps reaching for the stars. LITCHFIELD, GOODYEAR, AVONDALE & SURPRISE In the 1920s, cotton grown to reinforce the products of Goodyear Tire & Rubber laid the groundwork for the city of Litchfield Park and the opulent Wigwam Resort. Today, the legendary resort has been reinvigorated by sports mogul Jerry Colangelo, and the city blends almost seamlessly into Goodyear and Avondale to its south, and into Luke Air Force Base (F-16s, F-35s) and Surprise (with its popular age-restricted Sun City Grand) to its north.
