The Essential Phoenix+Scottsdale Happy New Year! Celebrate 2017 with five hiking destinations that guarantee that your resolution to get (or stay) in shape starts off on the right foot (pg. 32). Also, January’s collector car auctions (pg. 30) and satisfying steakhouses (pg. 34). 9 0 M I N U T E S AT Though it would be easy to spend hours wandering around this 140-acre botanical garden with its 55,000-plus plants, if you have limited time it’s still worth stopping by for a visit. Make sure to head to the new Sam and Betty Kitchell Heritage Garden, where large Mexican blue palms and more fill the space, as well as majestic towering Cardon cacti (some of the first plants to be planted at the Garden

Desert Botanical Garden in 1939!). The Founders Wall— located in the center of the space and comprised of glass circles—is a favorite as a backdrop for photos, while the serene Fine Family Contemplation Garden provides a quiet refuge to pause for reflection. Then, take a quick walk around the Desert Discovery Loop Trail, veering off to explore other trails as time allows. www.dbg.org

ON THE SCENE

Auto Auction Arrivals The Valley of the Sun is known worldwide for its famous January vintage and collector car auctions. From serious collectors to those who simply enjoy an auction’s energy and the chance to see so many unique automobiles, this month is heaven for automobile collectors and enthusiasts.

The lineup of automobiles to cross the auction block at Barrett-Jackson’s 46th Annual Scottsdale Auction includes Steven Tyler’s personal 2012 Hennessey Venom GT Spyder, the 1960 Chevrolet Engineering Research Vehicle (CERV) 1 used by Zora Arkus-Duntov for his advancements of the Corvette in the 1960s, and more than 140 vehicles from the Charlie Thomas Collection. These are just a few of the highlights from the more than 1,500 collectible vehicles set for auction Jan. 14-22 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The 350,000 attendees at the nine-day event can also experience Dodge thrill rides, automobilia auctions and arena polo matches. www.barrett-jackson.com STRIKING AUTOS Held adjacent to Scottsdale Fashion Square, the auction previews for Gooding & Company take place Jan. 18-21, with the auctions held Jan. 20-21. A striking Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Series “Grand Sport,” which records indicate may have been first owned by Pierre Louis-Dreyfus and the only Figoni-bodied Grand Sport Cabriolet known to survive, hit the auction block, along with a Type 35 Grand Prix, sold new to American Standard Oil heir Wallis C. Bird. www.goodingco.com AUCTION IN THE ROUND After 16 years, the locally owned and operated Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions is moving from its signature locale in the white tents in North Scottsdale to Salt River Fields at Talking Stick for its Jan. 18-22 event. Keeping its traditional “auction in the

round formula,” more than 800 cars—mostly European sports cars, American muscle cars, hot rods and customs— are auctioned. www.russoand steele.com RARE SHOWCASE Three panel discussions kick off the Arizona Concours d’Elegance on Jan. 14 at the historic Arizona Biltmore. Then on Jan. 15, 90 vintage motorcars are on display, all competing for best of show—including one of the rarest and most valuable cars in the world, the 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic coupe from the Mullin Automotive Museum. On Jan. 16, the Arizona Tour d’Elegance takes Concours entrants on a day’s drive visiting scenic vistas and private collections. www.arizonaconcours.com

SUPER SELECTION Following the Concours d’Elegance at the Arizona Biltmore, RM Sotheby’s Auctions holds its 18th annual Arizona sale Jan. 19-20. Last year’s sale highlight was a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster that sold for $9.9 million. This year’s auction offers more than 120 automobiles, ranging from great American classics to highly sought-after modern classics and contemporary supercars. Set to cross the block are a 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Dual-Windshield Phaeton and a Ferrari Enzo owned by fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger. www.rmsothebys.com ONEDAY AUCTION Held at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, Bonhams, a British-based auction house, brings a lineup of American

classics, sports cars and more to The Scottsdale Auction. Preview days are Jan. 17-18, with the sale day on Jan. 19. Some of this year’s highlights include a 1955 Austin-Healey 100S that has been under the same ownership for half a century and a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider that is the 11th of 54 built. www.bonhams.com AN AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE Silver Auctions strives to be an auction alternative, offering a selection of affordable collector cars in Scottsdale three times yearly. This event Jan. 19-22 marks the 20th year for its flagship Arizona auction. Held at Fort McDowell Resort & Casino, 600 cars cross the auction block. Memorabilia auctions are held throughout the event, as well. www.silver auctions.com This 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic coupe will be showcased at Arizona Concours d’Elegance.

WHERE NOW Phoenix+Scottsdale OUT+ABOUT

New On The Scene Expand your shopping horizons and stop by three stores new to the local scene. E-commerce-driven menswear brand Bonobos (www.bonobos.com) opened a “guideshop” at Scottsdale Quarter. The locale is a place where customers can see and try on clothing before placing an online order. Similar to a personal shopper, guides help find the best fits and styles, and then the items are shipped free of charge. Local Nomad (www.local nomadshop.com) at Phoenix’s Uptown Plaza offers a carefully curated selection of gifts, clothing and accessories made with an emphasis on sustainable materials and manufacturing practices. The items range from locally created products to handcrafted pieces from around the world. Find everything from handmade brass wall hangings and jewelry to hand-knitted baby rattles. American lifestyle brand J.McLaughlin (www.jmclaughlin.com) opened its first Arizona location at Scottsdale’s Kierland Commons, offering women’s and men’s clothing. The styles are classic, with a current relevance. The new store marks the 111th location for the company.

Perfect Pic Picks What would a visit to the Valley be without photos to preserve your memories? Perfect snap-worthy spots Scottsdale’s Civic Center Park. Stand by it, sit near it, pose with it. A drive down Shea Boulevard towards Fountain Hills takes you past an overlook off to your right just west of Palisades Boulevard. Pull into the parking lot and take in the view—you can see all the way to downtown Phoenix. In Fountain Hills, the famous fountain in Fountain Park (which typically shoots 330 feet in the air) is also a wonderful setting for photos. Head to Tempe Town Lake for a great backdrop, whether during the day or when the bridge’s lights can be seen after the sun sets. And of course, climb to the top of any mountain (Camelback and Piestewa Peak are favorites) and be rewarded with stunning scenery perfect for a photo opportunity.

“The ‘LOVE’ sculpture is the culmination of 10 years of work based on the original premise that the word is an appropriated and usable element of art...” —Robert Indiana Robert Indiana’s “LOVE” sculpture is located in Scottsdale’s Civic Center Park. 32 W H E R E P H O E N I X + S COT T S D A L E I J A N UA R Y 2017

Heart-healthy Hikes Those looking for motivation to honor their New Year’s resolution to get in shape are motivated by the area’s numerous hiking spots. Five favorite destinations include Camelback Mountain, which offers two trails to choose from (Cholla Trail and Echo Canyon Trail), both of which are challenging. Hikers also pick from various trails on Piestewa Peak, with the very strenuous Summit Trail being the most popular. At Pinnacle Peak, the route is more moderate, which makes it a favorite with beginner hikers and families. Tom’s Thumb in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve treats hikers to the iconic Tom’s Thumb rock formation, along with small alcoves and caves to explore. And climb South Mountain’s Holbert Trail to reach Dobbins Lookout, the mountain’s highest accessible viewpoint. It’s a challenging hike that rewards climbers with one of the best views of downtown Phoenix.

Steakhouses to Savor Each evening, grills fire up, servers pop the corks of fine wines and chefs sharpen their knives for another round of suburb suppers in the Valley. Now and then, a perfectly seasoned, flame-grilled prime cut of meat is all that will please the palate. Destinations like The Stockyards—founded in 1947—and family-owned Rustler’s Rooste Steakhouse keep to Western traditions and serve up hearty steaks inside digs with plenty of character, while juicy steaks and chops are served poolside on the rooftop at Dominick’s Steakhouse and in front of a stunning sunset view at J&G Steakhouse.

[WHERE INSIDE]

Valley of the Sun Your Way

Museum Goers

Patio Diners

Nightlife Lovers

From art to musical instruments to autos and more, there are so many museums to explore in the Valley. At the world’s only global musical instrument museum, the (1) Musical Instrument Museum, listen to an impressive number of instruments from around the world and enjoy an array of hands-on exhibits. Race over to (2) Penske Racing Museum to view a selection of race cars, trophies and racing memorabilia from Penske Racing, including a selection of Indianapolis 500 race-winning cars. At (3) Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), Arizona’s only permanent museum dedicated solely to modern works of art, find the crowd favorite “Knight Rise” skyscape by artist James Turrell (pictured) located in the outdoor courtyard.

While other states may be blanketed with snow in January, in the Valley of the Sun, it’s usually perfect patio weather. Pull up a chair at (1) AZ/88, a modern restaurant with award-winning cocktails and a nice selection of salads, sandwiches, burgers and entrées. The patio overlooks Scottsdale’s Civic Center Park.
