PHOENIX ZOO The nonprofit Phoenix Zoo is home to more than 1,400 animals, including endangered and threatened species—see elephants, lions, jaguars, lemurs, giraffes, bighorn sheep and more. At Monkey Village—the only walk-through exhibit of its kind in the United States—watch squirrel monkeys play as you wander through the open exhibit. Next, head over to Red Barn, where you can pet and brush goats. Kids who need to cool off can stop by the splash pad and water play areas. Other zoo experiences include a 4-D

square feet (with more than 30,000 animals!)—make sure to look up. Massive aquatic orbs suspended from the lobby ceiling are filled with schools of fish. And that’s just the beginning—the aquarium features everything from fish to sharks and sea lions to penguins. There is also a 3-D theater, rotating carousel theater and a touch pool. And, a giant submerged escalator allows guests to descend deep into the “ocean” while surrounded by thousands of sea creatures. Those who want to get into the water for a more up-close experience can purchase the SeaTREK underwater ocean walking activity. And make sure to check out the bathrooms in the lobby—the windows above the sinks let you watch sharks swim by! 9500 E. Hi Fi Kitchen & Cocktails
Speak(er) Up With “Hi Fi” in its name, it makes perfect sense that Hi Fi Kitchen & Cocktails showcases stunning, high-tech audio and visuals in a sleek, custom-designed indooroutdoor space. There’s a 45-foot digital graffiti ”wall” surrounding the main island bar that projects an ever-evolving array of 3-D images, opposite a brick-and-mortar back wall that’s lined with vintage speakers and throwback black and white televisions. Some of the speakers and televisions were donated by the restaurant’s owners from their personal collection, while the rest were sourced from yard sales and used electronics stores, says Diane Corieri, co-owner of Evening Entertainment Group, which owns the locale. They were refurbished, rewired, and then hand-installed one-by-one. The remaining wall was then wrapped with reclaimed wood planks to complement the eclectic, vintage look of the wooden speakers. www.hifiscottsdale.com
Hundreds of vintage music cassettes line a wall at Windsor, arranged end-to-end and top-to-bottom. “We wanted to highlight the juxtaposition between Windsor’s inviting ‘Everyone is Welcome’ neighborhood feel, while still making sure it still had some cheeky, punk rock spirit,” explains Lauren Bailey, co-owner of Upward Projects (the group that owns Windsor). “Plus, as a company that’s dedicated to adaptively reusing landmark local buildings, we loved the idea of giving a second life to all the old cassette tapes that sit in boxes under beds and collect dust by memorializing them as an installation.” As with Postino, the tapes were donated by customers of Upward Projects in exchange for a gift card. www.windsor az.com
MADE OF MATCHBOOKS Find a long wall lined entirely with vintage matchbooks and matchboxes at Postino Highland. When Upward Projects (the restaurant group that owns Postino) was researching the 1967 building’s history, Postino Highland
it found former owner Valley National Bank’s promotional materials, including
a stamp collecting book and matchbook—which sparked the idea for the wall. Upward Projects reached out to its customers, asking for donations of vintage matchbooks. “The matchbooks spark warm memories of when every restaurant worth its salt handed out custom matchbooks as marketing materials/collectibles,” says Lauren Bailey, co-owner of Upward Projects. ”What’s cooler than remembering a long-gone restaurant you went to as a kid? Plus, we love the crowdsource nature of the project, letting our regular customers contribute a little piece of personal memorabilia that will live on forever at Postino.” www.postinowinecafe.com

Satisfy your craving for international cuisines at (1) Cafe Lalibela in Tempe. The familyowned and -operated restaurant serves award-winning authentic Ethiopian food, as well as fresh-brewed cups of Ethiopian coffee. Indulge your taste buds with the flavors of Punjabi food at (2) The Dhaba. In addition to an extensive menu, the awardwinning casual yet elegant restaurant located on the light rail route offers cooking classes, a market and wine pairing dinners. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes are available. (3) Osha Thai Cafe in Scottsdale may be set into a strip mall, but you’ll find big Thai flavors at this small restaurant. Choose from noodles, seafood dishes, curries, rice options and more, and then finish your meal with Thai custard or sweet sticky rice.
Three Valley locations make (1) Cycle Bar an easy choice for those looking to get their spin on. Novices to cycling enthusiasts enjoy the pulse-pounding, concert-like indoor cycling experience complete with full-of-bass beats and rave-type lights. For pilates, head to (2) Premier Pilates in North Scottsdale. The destination is known for its top-notch instructors, welcoming studio, and options ranging from private sessions to three- or four-person group classes. Those short on time enjoy Scottsdale’s (3) Simply Cardio, which offers an efficient 30-minute workout— a six-minute warm-up and then a self-guided, 12-station cardio and core circuit which features elite, air fit technology machines that are intensive-relative. The gym also features revolutionary CorePump machines.
Sure you can explore the Valley on your own. But why not consider a planned tour, which can take your experience up a notch and provide a unique, local’s view of the area? Take in the Valley’s scenery from an iconic and fully customized 4x4 pink Jeep Wrangler with (1) Pink Adventure Tours Scottsdale. Choose from one of three adventures, which vary in length and activities. Chocolate lovers can visit a variety of chocolatiers and local shops in Scottsdale during a walking tour with (2) Chocolate Tour of Scottsdale. Get your pedal power on as you and a group of others (along with your guide, who mans the front of the bike) pedal your way through Old Town Scottsdale with (3) Arizona Party Bike. It’s B.Y.O.B. eco-tainment—join a pub crawl or book a private tour.
