A Local’s Guide to Art Basel Every December, creators and collectors come together for one of the biggest art events in the world: Art Basel. Today, it’s the anchor event to what is now known as Miami Art Week. Combining art, music, fashion and design, Basel and MAW attract over 75,000 visitors yearly, from curious locals to international A-listers. –By Priscilla Blossom

ounded in 1970 by gallerists Trudi Bruckner, Balz Hill and Ernst Beyeler, the inaugural Art Basel brought 90 galleries from 10 countries to Basel, Switzerland for a festival that would forever change the international art scene. Thirty-two years later, the prestigious art fair premiered in Miami Beach. “The show has always offered both exploration—with new works created by emerging artists—and a continuity of a high-quality international roster,” show organizers said. More than 260 of the world’s top galleries, including House of Gaga (Mexico City), White Cube (London) and David Zwirner (New York) are announced to participate this year. Local galleries also exhibiting include

“The show has always offered ... a high quality international roster,” Art Basel organizers said. Frederic Snitzer and David Castillo. This year, Art Basel Miami Beach, December 1-4, (artbaselmiamibeach. com) is poised to attract high-profile celebrities and top-notch collectors. Mega-superstar Madonna will play a benefit concert for the Raising Malawi charity at Faena Forum on Dec. 2. Beyond Art Basel, the growing number of satellite fairs, more than 20, including SCOPE, NADA and PULSE, have come to define Miami Art Week. During this time, pack your patience and expect to navigate heavier traffic in and around downtown Miami and Miami Beach. A variety of transportation options can make navigating the fairs easier including the free shuttle by the city of Miami Beach (www.miamibeachfl.gov) or ridesharing with Uber and Lyft. If you opt to drive, valet parking, cash-only public lots and garages are plentiful. For a closer look into Miami’s street art scene and city sights, we recommend exploring the Wynwood Art Distirct by bike; rent one for the hour or the day from Citi Bike (citibikemiami.com).
