The Essential St. Louis Summer in St. Louis continues to entertain with Broadway shows at The Muny, big concerts at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre, Cardinals baseball at Busch Stadium, oustanding exhibits at our world-class museums and more family attractions than you can shake a ticket at. If you’re new to The Lou, we advise taking a tour, like one of the many we highlight beginning on page 16. If you only have 80 minutes to spare, head over to the Missouri History Museum. 80 MINUTES IN:

Operated by the Missouri Historical Society, the Missouri History Museum is perhaps the perfect place in which to get acquainted with the Gateway City. Loaded with exhibits on St. Louis and regional history, the museum helps explain the character of the city and how it got here. One permanent exhibit, The 1904 World's Fair: Looking Back at Looking Forward, celebrates what many regard as the zenith of St. Louis history, a grand affair that occupied much of present-day Forest Park and to which is attrib-

uted such edible innovations as hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream cones, banana splits, iced tea, Dr. Pepper, cotton candy and peanut butter. That plane dangling from the ceiling is a replica of the Spirit of St. Louis, the one Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic in 1927. In a collaborative project spanning several years, the museum sought the input of visiting families to design and implement an exhibit that would engage kids with interactive elements while dishing out history lessons. History Clubhouse, recently won an Award of Merit from the American Association of State and Local History. Naturally, the museum hosts its share of traveling and temporary exhibits, one of which, Route 66: Main Street Through St. Louis, is on view through next July (see page 18). If you find yourself in the museum when lunch rolls around, count yourself lucky; Bixby’s, on the second level, delivers outstanding food and beautiful views at familyfriendly prices. And souvenirhunters will want to take an expedition through the wellstocked gift shop, Louisiana Purchase.

St. Louis offers an amazing variety of walking, riding, flying, floating, eating and drinking tours tailored to any subject or interest, like the tour of the AnheuserBusch Brewery, shown here, that may include a Clydesdale connection.

Loaded with demonstration gardens, interactive elements, miniature riding tractors and full-size farm equipment you can climb into, Grow helps us understand how we can all make a difference in what we eat. The exhibit is free, as are about 700 others in the center, which also offers plenty of ticketed experiences, like flight simulators and giant-screen films. www.slsc.org. 5050 Oakland Ave., 800.456.7572 or 314.289.4444. St.Louis Your Way

Yes, St. Louis is the world's greatest family travel destination, because it offers so many outstanding kid-friendly attractions that are absolutely FREE (even though you may occasionally have to pay for parking and special exhibits). The (1) Saint Louis Zoo, one of the top zoos in the U.S., offers a world of wildlife in Forest Park. Admission is free, but you can pay for ticketed exhibits like the Children’s Zoo (totally worth it). (2) Six Flags-St. Louis, (not free) features more than 100 rides, shows, games, attractions and concerts, plus Hurricane Harbor water park. (3) Grant’s Farm, The 281-acre estate of the Busch family includes animal shows, camel rides, pony rides, paddleboats, Clydesdales, animal feeding and petting area and a tram ride through the 160-acre Deer Park. And yes, after you pay for parking, admission is free.

The idea of dedicating public space for recreation and enjoyment is at least as old as ancient Egypt and was exercised by the ancient Assyrians, Greeks and Romans. The gold standard of urban parks, 1,300-acre (1) Forest Park serves as a one-stop visitor emporium, with four major attractions—Saint Louis Art Museum, Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Science Center and Missouri History Museum—plus tons of outdoor activities. Trails through the oak and hickory forest at 112-acre (2) Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center have been tamed a bit (paved, in other words) for folks who like their wildlife a touch less wild. Dominated by the large lake that gives the park its name, (3) Creve Coeur Park counts among its many amenties the Go Ape zipline and treetop adventure.

You need something to take to the kids waiting back home, or you'd like to gift your new business contact with something small but thoughtful. Spend some time browsing in some of our best gift stores, which also takes you into interesting neighborhoods across the city. (1) The Designing Block, a gift boutique informed by the creativity of an interior designer, offers a most unusual selection of unexpected got-to-have-its. At (2) Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design in The Loop, you find the skillful work of some of the finest craftspeople in the U.S. working over a dazzling variety of media. If there's a budding scientist on your list, head to the (3) Explorestore at the Saint Louis Science Center, headquarters for gifts, games, kits, models and lots more with a science theme. Surely you were going there anyway.
