MORRIS COMMUNICATIONS CHAIRMAN William S. Morris III PRESIDENT & CEO William S. Morris
The cultural season in St. Louis gains steam this month with "Fun Home" at the Fox Theatre, great concerts at The Pageant and The Sheldon Concert Hall, and a remarkable exhibit of Japanese war images at the Saint Louis Art Museum. You could take our Blues Tour, starting at the National Blues Museum and ending at three music clubs just south of Busch Stadium that form the "Bluesmuda Triangle." If you have just a short time, you might consider a visit to the sobering yet optimistic Holocaust Museum and Learning Center. 80 MINUTES IN: The unthinkable, unconscionable and monstrous genocide perpetrated on the Jewish population of Europe before and during World War II by Nazi Germany stands as one of the greatest crimes in human history. The Holocaust Museum & Learning Center, along with similar institutions in America and elsewhere, reminds us of a shared obligation never to forget such evil and to work to prevent its reoccurrence. The opening galleries of the museum trace the history of Jews in Europe, where they suffered centuries of discrimination and oppression punctuated by episodes of violent persecution. Photographs, artifacts (many donated by St. Louis Holocaust survivors), text panels, and audio-visual displays guide visitors through prewar Jewish life in Europe, the rise of Nazism and events during the Holocaust between

1933-1945, when some six million Jews were systematically murdered by the Nazi regime. The museum revisits the Nuremberg trials, where leading Nazi officials were tried before the International Military Tribunal on charges of conspiracy, crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The museum recounts the formation of the Jewish state of Israel in 1948, the need for which had

Blues Tour of St. Louis
Two museums expand an understanding of the blues, and a clutch of St. Louis clubs deliver the real deal up close and personal. The Blues Tour continues. If the blues’ direct ancestor was ragtime, then St. Louis was its Olduvai Gorge. Scott Joplin, the Ragtime King, lived here in a house on Delmar Blvd. where he wrote some of his most famous melodies. Now a museum, the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site traces the composer’s life and career in downstairs displays while the upstairs apartment has been furnished to reflect the period. Open M-Sa 10 am-4 pm. $4 adults; $2.50 children 6-12, free children under 6. www.mostateparks.com/ scottjoplin.htm, 2658 Delmar Blvd., west of Jefferson Ave., 314.340.5790, Map 4-2H.
National Blues Museum
Central to the blues was the African American experience, from slavery to Jim Crow to the Civil Rights movement, a history chronicled in the Griot Museum
NATIONAL BLUES MUSEUM St. Louis was a pivotal player in the history of the blues, a fact attested to in the new National Blues Museum in downtown St. Louis. There’s an entire St. Louis room dedicated to telling the vital role that St. Louis played in the development of the blues, particularly the city’s legendary ragtime piano tradition. But the museum takes its “National” title seriously, and traces blues history from the Mississippi Delta, Memphis, Chicago and beyond. According to Executive Director Dion Brown, “One of the most common discoveries most people have when visiting the National Blues Museum is in learning that blues music is the foundation of popular American music from rock and roll to rap, and how deeply into American history the blues are woven.” The museum’s state-of-the-art interactive elements let visitors compose their own blues riff, mix it up and email it home in the ‘Mix It Up’ room, courtesy of Jack White. Open Tu-Sa 10 am-5 pm, Su noon-5 pm. Admission $10-$15. www.nationalbluesmuseum.org, 615 Washington Ave., 314.925.0016, Map 2-2E.
