I Love Mosaic remember it. It was just so ordinary. And yet here I was, missing that ordinary, or should I say extraordinary moment, because it was a link to her. There’s something very bountiful and powerful about a mother’s garden. I am part of my Mom’s garden and my daughter is part of my garden. Gabrielle is one of the most magnificent parts of my life. As I watch her growing up, I realize that what we grow in our lives is so much bigger than us. Mosaic is also a part of my garden. For many years I worked at jobs that didn’t feed my soul. I always felt I was in the wrong place; that I was meant to accomplish something more. When Mosaic came along, I knew it was part of my purpose.
by Connie Brisson My Mom has been gone for one year now. And it’s taken a year for the loss of her to really sink into me, into my bones, into my everyday life. Yesterday I opened a bag of store bought peas and as I began to shell and eat them, I instantly thought of being in my Mom’s garden. My Mom always had great, big, abundant gardens full of vegetables and flowers. She spent hours every day out there. She loved her gardens. Each summer when I would visit her, I would go out to her garden, at least once, and just eat her fresh peas to my heart’s content. There would be pea shells carelessly flying everywhere as I enjoyed the contents of each one. It was a ritual for me. And when I would leave, she would always have a box of her fresh vegetables for me to take. Last year Mom was in the old age home and that was the first year that she didn’t have a garden. It was apparent, by her dramatic weight loss and her frail body, that she would be leaving us soon and she died on July 20, 2008. And as I was standing by my sink, shelling and eating my store bought peas, I started to cry. I missed her so much. I wished that I could go to her garden and see her just one last time. Suddenly I realized how important that inconspicuous memory of her garden and eating her peas was to me - and yet, it had been such an ordinary moment.
Now my ‘work’ has meaning. Each issue I put so much time and love into every aspect of Mosaic: the articles, artwork, layout, ads, ezines, website. I put my heart and soul into this garden that you get to see each issue. And what I truly wish is that there will be something really nourishing for you in each issue - a story that will change you, help you, ‘grow’ you. As you read this magazine, I hope you’ll enjoy some delicious moments that feed your soul and that you find a few new seeds you can plant into your garden. In this issue, we have a great interview with Dr. Steven Farmer about everything from animal spirit guides to power animals and drumming to DNA. In fact, we talked about so many different things that we couldn’t possibly fit it all in the magazine so please go to www.iLoveMosaicMagazine.com and click on the ‘Interviews’ tab to hear or read the complete interview. We’ve got some amazing prizes to give away when you post a comment about what you love about Mosaic on our website under the ‘Let’s Hear From You’ tab. Prizes include free tickets to: Dr. Steven Farmer’s upcoming workshops, Deva Premal and Miten’s concert in Calgary and Michael Bernard Beckwith’s talk in Edmonton or Calgary. If you love to win, sign up for our bi-monthly ezine (at our website) and you’ll be the first to know about great prizes as they continue to come up. And for those of you who love a little pasta and want to talk about the Law of Attraction, our next Mosaic Book Club Dinner will be on Tuesday, August 18th at Sorrentino’s Little Italy restaurant at 6:00 p.m. Email me if you can come. I’ll see you there!
And then it hit me that there are NO ordinary moments - all moments are so precious. When I was eating her peas, I never thought it was a special moment or that I would ever

How can a Heilkunst physician help you? by Tammie Quick DMH, DHHP
Many of us have heard of homeopathy, but have never heard of Heilkunst. Heilkunst is the system of medicine of which homeopathy is a component. It is a true system of medicine that enjoys a success rate of 97%.
For our purposes shocks and traumas can include (but are not limited to): medications, car accidents, sudden death of a loved one, a move, divorce, surgeries, x-rays, broken bones, birth of a child, vaccinations, recreational drug use, etc.
California Dreaming © Lorraine Shulba
It’s always fun when I tell people that I am a ‘Doctor of Medical Heilkunst’ because they invariably respond with a knowing nod of their head before doing a double take and saying: “Heil - what?”
Every shock or trauma that you’ve experienced throughout your life, has left what Heilkunstlers call a ‘negative impression’ behind. I like to think of these as old logs. When you’re young, healthy and full of life, it’s not such a big deal to carry around a few old logs (energetically). But as the years go by and the traumas continue, you have to carry around more and more logs that’s not so easy. And eventually, carrying around all those old logs, leads to chronic disease.
In fact, Heilkunst is the original system of medicine that Samuel Hahnemann outlined in his Organon of the Medical Art (originally titled Organon der Heilkunst) which was a call for medical reform back in the 1700’s! Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) is the ‘father of homeopathy’ and the man whose genius brought us a system of medicine that actually cures disease, yet does no harm to the physical body. Your Heilkunst physician will spend a great deal of time with you, during the initial consult, in order to get a true picture of what is going on for you in terms of homeopathic disease states. But she must also discern the difference between a true disease state, and what simply looks like a disease, but is in fact a product of poor diet, or side effects of a prescription drug, or even of an herbal or vitamin supplement.
Your Heilkunst practitioner will assist you in creating your own, unique sequential timeline of shocks and traumas, and then every four to six weeks you will take the correctly chosen homeopathic remedies, which will remove the negative impression that was left behind by each event. Keep in mind that your timeline will start now (in the present) and work backwards towards your birth. However if you have an event in your past that you know has kept you from being well since, your Heilkunstler may decide to start with that event, and then come back to the present, before proceeding in the usual sequence. To be sure, if you have some uncomfortable or annoying symptoms when you begin your Heilkunst journey, your practitioner will give you homeopathic medicines to treat those symptoms (so don’t be afraid to call her with a cold or flu!), but by working through the sequential timeline of shocks and traumas, she will also cure the underlying disease(s) that caused them in the first place. For more information on Heilkunst or homeopathy, and a whole lot more, please visit Tammie’s website at www.quick-health.ca or call (780) 221 - 6127. Note: This information is for educational purposes only. It is intended to supplement your current health program and not to replace the care of a doctor. For diagnosis or treatment of any disease please consult a licensed physician.
Additionally, your Heilkunst physician will take a thorough family history in order to determine what miasms (or genetic baggage) may be influencing your case. BUT the cornerstone of the Heilkunst treatment is the time machine! Now I’ve got your attention, right? While I am being a little ‘tongue and cheek’ here, I am completely serious when I say that Heilkunst will take you on a journey back through time, in order to reclaim your health. Here’s how it works...

Books that Changed My Life
Healing the Reconnection™ way through my fears in a gentle way, with love. I started by removing the night light from my bedroom. I was always secretly scared of the dark and kept a night light on for protection. I realized by protecting myself, I was giving into fear. My husband never cared for my night light so he was shocked and delighted when he came to bed the first night to find me sleeping in the dark! I am the light in the dark now! The most amazing change that occurred was I healed myself from my breathing difficulties. After my father went to the after-life, I had numerous chest infections and used an inhaler two to three times a week for the past couple of years. One night, I woke up in the middle of the night short of breath. Since my inhaler was empty, I sat up and read the next chapter that I was on in the book - Chapter 19, Finding the Energy. I followed the directions in the book to activate my hands and instantly I could breathe! It has been almost four months since then and I have not used the inhaler once! by Sherry Martini ATP®, Reconnective Healing Practitioner™ Heart Connection! That’s how I would describe my first Reconnective Healing® session. I went somewhere - where I went, I don’t know. All I know is that I saw light and went down what looked like a hallway without actually physically going. For 24 hours after that session, I was speechless and felt the most serene I have ever felt in my life! I immediately knew I had to learn more about this healing modality and quickly bought Dr. Eric Pearl’s book: The Reconnection - Heal Others, Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2001). As I started reading the book, I could feel myself changing. My whole body tingled with goose bumps - it was so powerful. Then, when I reached the part of the book that states: “By now you may be tuning in with the frequencies,” I understood what was happening. “Reconnective Healing® is neither a technique nor a collection of techniques. It has little to do with rules or procedures. It’s a new state of being. It becomes you. You become it. And you are forever changed. Period.” - Dr. Pearl As I continued to read the book, I noticed big changes starting to occur in my life. It began empowering me to move
iLoveMosaicMagazine.com
I was so inspired by the book and what Reconnective Healing® had already helped me with that I registered for the training in Calgary with Dr. Pearl’s staff. At the seminar, I was blown away by how easily and accessible the energy was to interact with to heal others. I watched in awe as everyone registered with the frequencies and reported miraculous healings of their own. Again, like at my first session, I felt so serene! When I came home from the training, I quickly gave three Reconnective Healing® sessions to my mother who has multiple sclerosis and is in a wheelchair. After the sessions, my mother is feeling blood moving through her legs for the first time in years! Her physiotherapist noticed my mother has more strength in her legs. I also gave one session to my beloved dog, Sandie, who has an irregular heart pattern. Because of his heart condition, Sandie was getting sick in the house every week. Since that session two months ago, Sandie has not been sick once. This book opened up a whole new world of healing to me. And it all started by following my heart… Sherry Martini is an Angel Therapy Practitioner® and a Reconnective Healing Practitioner™ offering healing sessions to adults, animals and children in Edmonton. www.lightformblessings.com or 780-710-2182.

Reconnective Healing® is like nothing else by Chandelle MacMillan Reconnective Healing Practitioner® About a year ago, I ran into an old client of mine. It had been quite some time since I’d last seen him and I was shocked at the difference in his appearance. He said he was going through a nasty divorce and it was taking everything out of him. He was emotionally drained, had lost a lot of weight and was really struggling in every way.
Reconnective Healing® was discovered by Dr. Eric Pearl (www.thereconnection.com) who at the time was running one of the most successful chiropractic clinics in Los Angeles. Through a sequence of events (described in more detail in his book - The Reconnection - Heal Others, Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2003), Dr. Pearl experienced what is called an Axiatonal Alignment and this opened the door for Reconnective Healing® to begin. His clients began reporting feeling his hands on them even though he had not physically touched them. Patients were soon reporting seeing angels and were receiving miraculous healings from cancers, AIDS-related diseases, Chronic Fatigue
It affected him so much that, a few weeks after finishing his treatments, I received calls from his sisters. They wanted to know what I did to their brother! They said they couldn’t believe the difference in him. He was so calm and grounded and was dealing with the challenges and transition before him with much more balance, peace and strength. I’ve worked on half that family now and one of the sisters even became a Reconnective Healing Practitioner®. Reconnective Healing® is healing based on one practitioner introducing the Reconnective frequency into the ‘essence’ of another person, animal or living thing. So what you do is you feel, you notice, you observe, but you aren’t sending energy. Instead you act as a catalyst, for a higher level of change beyond energy healing.

The Sleeping Goddess © Roxi Sim — www.pearlsofwisdomtarot.com
I told him that I just finished training as a Reconnective Healing Practitioner® and thought it could help. He took my advice, had three sessions and then his ‘personal reconnection.’ With each session I noticed his energy was lighter and he seemed better, more positive. By the end of his treatments, I couldn’t even believe I was looking at the same person! His outlook on life had completely changed, he looked healthy and vibrant, his energy was back and so was his sense of humor!
Syndrome, birth disfigurements, Cerebral Palsy and other serious afflictions. Eric’s clients started to report their own experiences of spontaneously healing their friends and family just by holding their hands near them. What they found was that once you came into contact with this ‘frequency,’ his patients had the ability to carry it. And the work of The Reconnection® began. Many clients receiving Reconnective Healing® have not only transformed in their personal lives but also in their physical health. Healings may occur in a physical, emotional, spiritual or mental form. My clients have had healings from things such as chronic pain (where they are almost off pain

medication all together), anxiety, depression and self esteem issues. They have allowed themselves to move through these challenges and become these amazing, balanced people. I myself have battled with anxiety on and off over the years and in 2006 it became apparent I had to do something about it. I worked with Quantum Biofeedback first, then found The Reconnection®. I’m happy to say, I no longer have any anxiety and am very centered and peaceful for the first time in my life. The Reconnection has helped me to push through a lot of baggage and let go. At the most basic level, the easiest way to explain what is happening with our clients is an ‘attunement.’ If you have had any exposure to vibrational medicine, biofeedback concepts or quantum physics, you would be familiar with the ideas of frequencies and entrainment and how they affect our cellular health. Think about it in terms of the effects of this attunement. For example, imagine you were born color blind. Years later something happens to your eyes, and the color-receptive cells kick in. Can you imagine? Suddenly a whole new realm of perception comes to life for you. In Reconnective Healing®, a similar event takes place. Reconnective Healing® is here on the planet for the very first time. Other frequencies of healing such as Reiki, Qi Gong and Johrei, have been around for centuries and are not of the same frequency as Reconnective Healing®. It seems they are a subset of Reconnective Healing®, and that these new frequencies are operating on a new level. This is not energy healing, and in fact this work is normally done ‘hands-off.’ It gets stronger with distance, unlike other modalities.
Healing® sessions for each of them and then completing their Personal Reconnections®. Each of them was embarking on a new and exciting segment of their own life path experience. I watched as they took their first steps in learning and understanding this work from a basic level and saw it bloom into this deep feeling that they were in the right place at the right time. They have been transformed into these confident healers and we are ready to take on the world! Reconnective Practitioners® can also be specially trained to facilitate Reconnective Kids® - the newest program from The Reconnection®. This program was created to engage children aged 4 - 14 in a powerful and interactive-play workshop format by introducing these intelligent, empowering and transformative new healing frequencies. Holly Hawkins is the facilitator for Reconnective Kids® and runs classes periodically throughout the year in Alberta. If you are interested in further information on this program, visit her website at www.hollyhawkins.net or call her at 760-803-4297. Reconnective Practitioners® will be taking part for the first time in the Edmonton Dragon Boat Festival on August 21-23, 2009 at Louise McKinney River Front Park. We will be offering five minute sessions to anyone who would like to feel these amazing frequencies for a $5 fee to a worthy cause. Drop by and visit us! It is intended to supplement your current health program and not to replace the care of a doctor. For diagnosis or treatment of any disease please consult a licensed physician.
The research that Eric has done with Dr. Gary Schwartz at the University of Arizona’s Human Energy Systems Laboratory is published in Gary’s books, The Living Universe (Hampton Roads Publishing Company, 1999) and The Energy Healing Experiments (Atria, 2008). There are currently other studies (both complete and underway) that are pending publication. Reconnective Healing® has also been the subject of six other books and is featured in the new movie The Living Matrix released this year. There is further work being done with leading universities and institutes to further the research that supports this work. One visit (or perhaps even part of one visit) may be plenty. Generally it is recommended that you consider up to three sessions. And, although each session is special, often something particularly special tends to be reported about session number three. Healings occur in an instant. What takes time is for the person to ‘decide’ to accept the healing. If you receive everything you’re looking for by your first, second or third session, it’s time to let go and allow things to unfold on their own. Reconnective Healing® is not about regular visits or ‘touchups.’ You do not need to come in for weekly or ongoing sessions. Once you have your session(s), you ‘own’ your change, your healing, your evolution. It’s yours. No one can take it away from you — ever. In the past year I watched in awe as 10 of my previous clients and friends stepped into their mastery and joined myself as a Reconnective Healing Practitioner®. It was truly an honor to be a part of their journey, initially facilitating Reconnective iLoveMosaicMagazine.com

Your Gut Feeling
Are you a ‘Liver Person?’ Are you a ‘liver person?’ Pessimistic? Moody? Prone to headaches? Sleep difficulties? Jean Pierre Barral, originator of Visceral Manipulation (VM), found a link between these symptoms and people whose livers are weak and congested. He found by ‘waking up’ the liver with VM therapy, these symptoms diminished considerably. The liver has a lot to do. It produces a litre of bile per day in order to break down and store fats. It metabolizes proteins and carbohydrates into simpler forms the body can use. It helps create many hormones and vitamins, and serves as a nutrient storage centre. It also assists the pancreas to regulate our blood sugar - and by extension our mood. We source our life energy from the liver, along with the kidneys. Dr. Barral calls the liver the body’s Poison Control Centre - it filters 1.5 litres of blood per minute as part of its massive responsibility to remove toxins from our system. Situated below the diaphragm and above the colon, weighing almost 2 kilos, it lies behind the right ribcage. Emotional Tendencies: Dr. Barral feels the liver is the repository of our inner being and the “primary (internal) organ witness to bad memories.” Liver congestion impairs the development of our deepest self and imprisons us in the past. We become self-fulfilling pessimists, unable to fully open to the possibilities of the present. The liver is the psyche’s primary dump site for parental issues and family guilt. Parents, notoriously mothers, are often blame magnets for liver people. These same people can become bound by routine. Stodgy tendencies may degenerate into compulsions, phobias, even addictions. An afflicted liver blunts the capacity to plan or create. Insecurity and low self-esteem are not uncommon. Liver people can be moody and ill tempered, prone to bouts of anger.
Our liver might function poorly because of genetics, injury sustained in an accident, or by diseases such as hepatitis. But we are often guilty of taxing our liver by what we take into our bodies medications, food additives, environmental poisons, alcohol, recreational drugs. (Painters, janitors, and cleaners tend to suffer more liver disease because of the toxic products that they use.) Certain foods are harmful to the liver: processed foods, fatty foods (including meats and cheeses, and fried foods), bad oils (e.g., trans fats), alcohol, pastries, coffee, and most unfortunately for women, chocolate. Morning Sunshine © Rose-Marie Cameron
by Peter Melnychuk Visceral Manipulation Practitioner, LMT
All of these create sludge in the liver and impair the inherent natural movement any healthy internal organ needs to function effectively. An improved diet, supplements, regular exercise, and regular water intake are all important in assisting the liver to resume normal service. Among physical therapies, Visceral Manipulation is unrivalled in its ability to help improve liver function. An efficient liver improves mood and energy. A series of VM sessions greatly assists detoxification: freeing ourselves from the physiological and emotional poisons of our Past, we can open to the unfettered potential of the Present. Peter is a Visceral Manipulation Practitioner and VM Teaching Assistant for the Barral Institute. He is also a Certified Chi Nei Tsang Instructor and LMT. Check out www.unwindthebelly.ca This article summarizes information in Understanding the Messages of Your Body, by J.P. Barral (North Atlantic Books, 2007). For diagnosis or treatment of any disease please consult a licensed physician.
Physical Tendencies: Headaches; sensitivity to light; poor digestion; skin sensitivities: dull complexion, oily hair, dandruff; white coated tongue; bad breath. Copious and/or smelly sweat; sinus infections from inflamed mucous membranes; hemorrhoids. Right-sided shoulder, neck, and shoulder blade pain. Pain under the lower right ribcage. Difficulty falling asleep, chronic sleep disturbances (e.g., waking up at 3:00 a.m. nightly), insomnia. Fatigue, then, is a common complaint. Even when they do sleep, liver people do not feel rested. Many of them feel like they have a mild hangover 24/7! iLoveMosaicMagazine.com

My AHA Moment
My AHA moment came at a red light was then that I bumped into Gerda in a grocery store. With her encouragement I began to further my yoga education and training. Life seemed wonderful! Then, everything changed again. My aging father began to have many health issues and my husband became ill. At one point we would bring my father home from the hospital through one door and take my husband off to the hospital through the other door. Luckily my sister and children were always there to help. My hair began to fall out and when I looked in the mirror I found my Grandma looking back at me! I clearly remember sitting on the edge of my bed wondering how we would make it through this. Then suddenly I remembered what my yoga had been teaching me all these years and I surrendered my worries. We had each other and all the positive energy that surrounds each one of us. It was like the weight of the world was removed from my shoulders and I knew we would be fine. When my father passed away I felt a tremendous sense of loss which was compounded by huge gaps of free time. Although I was still teaching yoga and had my family to care for, I knew I needed something more. After going through lists of ideas of what I should do it was my husband who said to me: “You have been teaching yoga for over 20 years and no matter what you do, it is always yoga that you go back to.” by Melanie Checknita Yoga Instructor/Studio Owner Life offers most of us many AHA moments but one of my biggest ones surprised me at a red light. It all began with my first yoga class with Gerda Krebs as a teenager. Little did I know how that one class would change my life forever! As a student I must have been a challenge. I was talkative, insecure and found stillness and relaxation time very difficult. Yet, with Gerda’s encouragement and guidance I persevered, trained under her and became a Hatha yoga teacher. My journey as a yoga instructor began slowly. I got married, worked fulltime, had a child and eventually lost touch with Gerda. Then my life was turned upside down when my Mom, who was my best friend, died unexpectedly. Through it all I continued to teach yoga but was realizing that I needed to go deeper into it and learn more.
With my family’s encouragement I began to look for space for a yoga studio. They say what you are looking for is usually right under your nose! I was at a red light two minutes from my home, when I looked over and saw a ‘For Lease’ sign. That sign had been there for four years! That was my biggest AHA moment yet. With the help of so many wonderful friends and family Yoga Within was built in just six weeks! One and a half years later, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to open this studio. It has almost been 30 years since that first yoga class with Gerda! On her first visit to Yoga Within I realized how much yoga has given me and changed my life. As my journey continues I now have the opportunity to share with others the gift Gerda shared with me so many years ago! Melanie has been teaching yoga for over 20 years and is the owner of Yoga Within. She teaches Hatha, Ahstanga, children, seniors, prenatal, private, school groups, corporate groups, sports teams and dance groups. Visit www.yogawithin.ca or call 780-450-9642 (YOGA).
Time went by, and after being blessed with two more children, we renovated our house so my father could move in with us. It

Release your stress with Network Care Stress is a fact of life - of our busy lives. Indeed, it’s so common that we don’t even realize what a toll it’s taking on our bodies and our health. But when we consider that stress is a major component of all diseases, it needs to take top priority in our wellness treatments. Network Care is a chiropractic method designed to bring you from illness to wellness, from surviving to thriving. It uses the least amount of intervention to achieve the most amount of change. In three levels of care, Network Care uses light touches along the spine in a precise sequence to reorganize your nervous system’s response to stress. It’s like an upgrade to your hard drive! So why do we get stuck in survival? STRESS and our BRAIN. Our brain function has evolved in three main stages. Heart rate, breathing and basic survival instincts are organized by the reptilian brain. The mammalian brain is one level up - it coordinates feeding, breeding, fighting and fleeing. It is reactive and uses a black and white, knee jerk kind of reasoning. The ‘highest’ level is the frontal cortex - our awareness, integration, compassion, love, meaning and sense of community lives here. Everything that happens to us enters our body through our senses and is filtered by the brain from the bottom up. There are many kinds of stress and many stress response patterns. The ‘fight or flight response’ is the best known. First it builds tension in the muscles around the spine and limbs to prepare us to fight or flee. Second, the body shifts the blood flow away from the digestive and reproductive organs to the heart, lungs and muscles so you have the resources to save your life. Third, it affects your ability to think and feel. Your attention is shifted away from your thoughts and emotions to the external events happening around you. This mechanism allows the body to store tension and our emotions about the event until the threat has passed.
stuck. Then the tensions and emotions continue under the surface using up our vital energy and reducing our capacity to feel and think. With our head down, our shoulders rounded and our body stooped forward, we may look and feel like we’re carrying ‘the weight of the world on our shoulders.’ At this level, the cumulative effects of stored tension can interfere with the communication in the spine, further disrupting the nervous system. Eventually our physiology begins to erode followed by symptoms, opening the door to pathological changes and disease syndromes. AR001902 © Monika Dery — www.onceinabluemoon.ca

Under normal circumstances when the body perceives a threat, fight or flight takes over like an autopilot and when the threat has passed, the tension and the emotions associated with it are naturally released. Because the body survived the incident it learns to use the same strategy for the next similar event. But, if the stress is constant, repeated or overwhelming, we can get iLoveMosaicMagazine.com

Give yourself the gift of renewed health Fifteen years ago, struggling with a debilitating depression and a persistent addiction to smoking, I made a decision - I needed to get healthy. I tried everything (psychologists, hypnosis, medication, support groups) and then a friend told me about acupuncture. I found an acupuncturist and with her help I conquered both my depression and my smoking addiction. It felt so good to be healthy again! Then 11 years ago, with a clear mind and clean lungs, I began my own journey to becoming an acupuncturist. Now I share the gift of renewed, vital health with my clients through my own acupuncture practice. Acupuncture is an ancient medicine - one that uses modern diagnosis and treatment. It has been practiced for over 3000 years and has proven effective in the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization recognize acupuncture as an effective treatment for over 50 conditions, including: addiction, arthritis, anxiety, chronic fatigue, colitis, depression, digestive problems, fertility enhancement, fibromyalgia, IBS, menstrual irregularities, pain, sciatica, sleep disturbances and stress. Despite this endorsement acupuncture is still often misunderstood. The easiest way to understand acupuncture is to think of a simple stream. It starts out bubbling along and then, over time, the banks erode and debris falls in, causing the free flow of water to slow down or even stop, resulting in brackish, mucky water. Now the stream can’t function in the same way that it could when the water was freely flowing. Similarly, our bodies are a network of energy that must flow freely for healthy functioning.
memory. Her quality of life had deteriorated to the point where she could no longer enjoy activities with her busy young son. Lisa’s energy flow was disrupted in several areas. Because of the chronic nature of her problem, we started by supporting and nourishing her kidney, spleen and stomach energy. In addition, we focused on her liver and gallbladder energy. Each visit we would also treat the dominant symptoms (usually muscle pain) by needling the painful areas. In the beginning we met two times each week. Then, as her symptoms subsided, we met weekly and then biweekly. The Bistro II © Denise Lefebvre

Two and a half months later, Lisa rarely has diarrhea and then only if she has eaten something too spicy. She sleeps eight to 10 hours each night and wakes feeling rested. Her pain has been reduced by 80%, her ear-ringing has disappeared, and her co-workers have commented on her improved memory. Lisa now has the energy that she needs to enjoy her life. She misses less work, and she participates more in family activities. She knew her health was back on track when, on Mother’s Day, her son thanked her for playing sports and being active with him again. Acupuncture can give you back your health by stimulating the return of your vital energy. It’s ancient medicine that works. Wendy Stalker, R.Ac., Dip.Ac., BSc (Family Studies) is an Edmonton based Acupuncturist who believes in a body, mind, spirit approach to health. When energy doesn’t flow freely, our health deteriorates, and we experience pain and discomfort. Acupuncture helps us to clear the debris from our stream of energy, giving back health and vitality. Many who come to acupuncture struggle with an overload of debris in their stream - chronic health concerns. Lisa, a young mother diagnosed with fibromyalgia, came to my office complaining of sudden, persistent diarrhea, chronic fatigue (despite more than 12 hours of sleep each night) and debilitating migraines, joint and muscle pain. She also experienced ear-ringing, dizziness and a poor

Healing yourself with Sound Therapy by Norma Hope Certified Colon Hydrotherapist My sister, Judy, got fantastic news on July 9th. Her medical tests proved she is now totally free of the cervical cancer that she was diagnosed with in March of this year! I love my sister very much. I cried when she told me this tremendously great news. It’s like she’s getting a second chance at life. And since her very real cancer scare, her way of being in this world is different now. The changes she’s made have improved the quality of both her health and her life.
self. NeuroAcoustic Sound Therapy recalibrates and balances the brain wave states, bringing you back into balance on all levels - physically, emotionally and spiritually. With NeuroAcoustic Sound Therapy, we identify your specific and unique sound frequency (that each one of us is born with), called your ‘Personal Frequency InnerTone.’ I call it your sound DNA. We determine your Personal Frequency Innertone by muscle testing and Thought Field Therapy. For example, mine is 190.2800 or F#+48 on the piano scale.
When we first found out that Judy had cervical cancer in March, I asked her to come to Edmonton so I could do whatever I could to help her. She came and went through a number of colon hydrotherapy, lymph drainage, NeuroAcoustic Sound Therapy and other treatments. It just makes sense that if 90% of all disease is caused by toxins in the body, you want those toxins out. And once you do, your body then is able to tell you what it needs and wants in order to heal itself. When Judy went back home to Ontario there were two things for her to do on an ongoing basis - follow a strictly healthy diet and listen to a personalized sound therapy CD (Personal Frequency InnerTone) that I had made for her. NeuroAcoustic Sound Therapy is one of the most effective healing therapies I’ve come across to counterbalance stress and stress is something that Judy has been struggling with for a long time. A lot of us have a family dynamic of being praised for ‘doing’ instead of just being and that is where the workaholism comes from. I knew the sound therapy would help her to deeply relax which is so important in the healing process. In the days and weeks that followed, Judy told me that the sound therapy was profound for her. She couldn’t believe the difference in how she felt. She said: “Wow, I knew I was wired and stressed but I didn’t know how much until I started to see what being peaceful and calm felt like again. It helped me feel really grounded. My sciatic isn’t flaring up like it usually does and I’m feeling better than ever.” Aurora’s Teapot © Carol Breen
It took me 40 years to realize that stress is the worst toxin there is. Stress is quite simply a silent killer. It feeds disease tremendously at a cell level, tightens the body, makes the brain stay in Beta, destroys your adrenals and makes you hang onto ‘stuff’ you don’t want in the body. It keeps you in ‘fight or flight’ instead of the relaxed resonant state of just ‘being’ that we all need for exquisite health. Previous trauma, illness or injury and just everyday stress in life throws us off our path, ‘out of tune’ with our true

Once identified, your frequency is then used on the specially engineered sound table to balance your subconscious core beliefs plus recalibrate your other beliefs in Alpha, Theta and Delta brainwave states using binaural beats to get you there. It is then recorded on a CD with primordial sounds for you to continue your healing at home each day. Each of our brains as adults, move in and out of the primary four brainwave states during a day but for adults we walk around mostly in the brainwave state of Beta which is dominant; the ‘doing’ state. This state corresponds to frequencies ranging from 13Hz to 40Hz. Alpha is slower then beta, with frequencies ranging from 7Hz to 13Hz. It transports you to deeper levels of creativity, problem solving, visualization and letting go. After my Alpha balancing, I knew with a gentle, knowing calmness that my relationship with my husband of 20 years was over - without any doubt, trauma or emotional calamity. Only by balancing your subconscious beliefs in Alpha can you truly ‘let go’ of what no longer serves you. The Theta brainwave state corresponds to 3.5Hz to 7Hz. It allows, an opening yet deep relaxation, stress relief, healing emotional trauma and remembering dreams. Scientific research has proven just 30 minutes in Theta a day can dramatically improve a person’s overall health and wellbeing. I never remembered any of my dreams except the one where I was falling off a cliff and would wake just before I hit bottom. After doing my Theta Personal Frequency InnerTone recalibration, I dreamed I was looking out my kitchen window and on the lawn was a Siberian tiger. Sitting between her paws was a beautiful blond little girl. The tiger was licking her hair, looking at me and said: “Will you look after her or would you like me to?” I now dream in living color and remember them (plus I got a built in babysitter to keep my inner child safe).
your brain become more widespread plus new ‘dendritic’ growth happens. Dendrites are the many branching fibers extending from the neuron/cell body. These fibers increase the surface area for receiving and processing information. The pronounced shortening of these and reduction in the numbers of branches is evident with senility in the elderly. Amazingly, sound therapy gets those dendrites growing again! Scientific studies are available showing successful decreases in cortisol levels and increase in DHEA and melatonin levels when doing sound therapy. There is nothing more powerful than your frequency healing, your own voice healing you. It allows clients to remember dreams, sleep better, let go easily of anger, fear and relationships that no longer serve us and even heals physical pain and emotional trauma. Dr. Jeffrey Thompson is the recognized international sound therapy genius and guru and I was trained under someone he personally trained. All my consultations include a free relaxation sound session because everyone can always, always, use a way to relax effortlessly. I only believe in doing what works and this sound therapy works. The Delta brainwave state corresponds to frequencies ranging from 0.5 Hz to 3.5Hz. This promotes physical healing, bringing your organs, tissues, muscles and even your bones back into harmonic balance. The central nervous system is in the brain after all. An example of how this sound therapy works is, with headphones on, when a frequency of 100Hz is presented to the left ear and a frequency of 105Hz is presented to the right ear, the brain ‘hears’ a third frequency pulsing at 5Hz (the exact difference between the two frequencies). This third frequency is a binaural beat and the brain will begin to resonate in tune with that frequency (and become retrained). This is how different states of Alpha, Theta and Delta are induced and moved in and out of. I now know why I use to hum to myself - it was soothing. It resonated ‘me’ back to me. Sound travels through fluid like nothing else and our bodies are 65 to 85% fluid. When your subconscious gets seen and heard, it can be balanced as it finally has permission to let go of those old beliefs you needed as a child to survive. That is a balanced state of being. The added bonus of this sound technology is stimulation of neural development and electrical activity. Energy patterns in iLoveMosaicMagazine.com

Intention Focused Therapy is powerful by Loretta Mohl Certified Life Coach When your mind and soul combine with focused intention you will create miracles! Every once in a while we stumble upon an experience so rare and so out of the ordinary that we know there has to be something we are supposed to learn from it. For me that lesson came from the death of my husband. I believed we would be together forever. But Rick’s life was haunted by a past of abuse and separation. To beat his pain he battled with alcohol and depression. At times it seemed like he was winning. But in 1998 and after only five years of marriage, Rick decided to confront his past and journeyed back to the place where he endured his abuse. Terrible memories resurfaced. Over the next weeks I watched helplessly as he withdrew from family and friends and tried to deal with his inner turmoil, but he was failing. After a desperate 12 weeks he asked for outside support. Rick agreed to go to a healing centre which was a six hour drive away. Half way there he started to pray for a miracle to release him from his lifelong pain. He was lying on the back seat. Two hours later when he arrived at the centre he was dead. The doctors said there was nothing physiologically wrong with him. The autopsy revealed no cause of death. Later, the pathologist told me that in all his 40 years of doing autopsies he had never been so baffled. Rick’s heart had simply stopped beating and there was no apparent reason. The truth is my husband could not find a way to stop the intense pain he felt in his heart and the miracle he prayed for was death.
Give © Bernadette McCormack — www.bernadettesart.info
My husband’s death taught me the power of intention. He intended to die; he willed himself to die. If I knew then, what I know now, Rick would have willed himself to live. It’s entirely up to you which thought you align with. We have the power to choose our thoughts when we choose to live with present moment awareness. My message boils down to a simple formula. Intention is the very basic spiritual force that drives the universe. It is the energy encoded into our DNA. We have the power to first visualize something in our minds and then manifest it in the physical realm. The fuel that drives manifestation is intention. The magic of intention is that just by acknowledging it and focusing on it, you can create miracles in your life. It really is that simple. While the path of my inspiration was determined by my husband’s death, my determination to heal showed up early in my life. It was an unstoppable force. At age 16, I was a nurse’s aide; at age 19, I was studying to be a psychiatric nurse. Shortly after nursing school, I was called home to nurse my dying grandfather and I saw how his addictions had ravaged his body, his mind, his soul. His life was driven by addictions. It was devastating to watch. Determined to come to terms with the cycle of addiction I registered in a program to study addictions which later then led into studying Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) at the University of Regina. NLP is a model

of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behavior and the subjective patterns of thought underlying them. That was life changing. Until then I did not know I had choices - everything was black and white. I had to learn to communicate, to share feelings, to express myself. The thing that truly robs people of their power is when they think they have no choice. It was at this point in my life I starting praying to the Creator to guide me to powerful, simple ways that would heal the root cause and that could be taught to others. A multi disciplinary healer, my path continued through Reiki. This was another turning point. I started to integrate energy work into counseling sessions. From there I trained as a Peruvian Shaman. I have worked at the forefront of residential school survivor programs and have taught extensively. I am also a qualified Theta Healing practitioner and teacher, having taught Theta Healing around the world. And now, these 30 years of healing work and experiences have culminated into the development of Intention Focused Therapy (IFT). IFT is about tracking core issues that have us living confined by fear, doubt, worry and lack, instead of living from a place of being conscious of our inner magnificence and prosperity. The development of this therapy was the answer to my life long prayer. Source Energy, God, Life Force, Creator, Universal Energy, Divine Presence, (or whatever name you use), it’s everywhere. This is the energy we all source from — God. The power of conscious intention is what instantly makes that Source Energy available to us. Importantly, that power is within us and always within us to access at our will.
“WHAT? I can actually feel the Divine!” and my body said simply, peacefully: “Yes, this is how it really is.” IFT helps you feel and see a stunningly simple truth. We are connected. We are Divine. We have everything we need and are loved. IFT directly addresses deep and profound aspects of us. It can be used to change any aspect of your life. • • • • • • • • •
Symptoms of a chronic health problem can be improved or removed. Fear of failure can be changed into a love of success. A discouraged attitude can be changed to a positive attitude. Resentments, grudges and hatred can be removed. DNA can be reprogrammed to facilitate health, wealth and happiness. Addictions can be overcome while minimizing or eliminating withdrawal. Negative reactions to people who ‘push our buttons’ can be changed. Anxieties over important life events can be soothed. Learning the Intention Focused Therapy technique to facilitate even more miracles in your life.
From my heart and soul I bring you Intention Focused Therapy. Loretta Mohl is a Certified Life Coach and Counselor and teaches Intention Focused Therapy at the Canadian College of Healing Arts. The minute we use intention to acknowledge our connection to Source Energy we have the opportunity to create and change anything that we desire. When we connect intently with Creator Consciousness we are going within ourselves to access the subconscious mind where limiting belief systems and unfinished events are stored. It is the heart that is the major organ in our body system and is the center of our Divine Consciousness. It stores our pain and it stores our love. If we are holding on to pain from the past, the memories of that pain are being pumped into every cell of our body. And it is from here that the path to wellness begins. With IFT we use heart centered consciousness to go within the body to follow the trauma to the root cause. This is what one client had to say after experiencing a session. “I met with Loretta to uproot a devastating and totally irrational fear that was stopping my professional life as a new academic—publishing. I intellectually knew why I had this issue; it was a painful memory of a teacher hitting me for writing WRONG (upside down and backwards!) with my right hand. Because the memory was so traumatic, I couldn’t face it myself and felt Loretta was the right person to help me. As Loretta guided me through the experience, I first felt fear and even the physical pain of being hit by that teacher. But as the session progressed, something beautiful happened. All the fear and pain subsided and I felt something new … hope and peace. I felt held, contained. Suddenly I felt the presence of the Divine not just around me, but IN me. I was in awe. iLoveMosaicMagazine.com

Your soul and personality tarot cards This issue we continue with anthropologist, Angeles Arrien, method of determining which tarot cards reflect your personality and soul lessons / gifts. These cards are determined by your birth date. For a recap on how to determine which card you are and tarot cards 0 - 7, go to www.iLoveMosaicMagazine.com, In This Issue and click on Your soul and personality cards article. 8 - Balance / Justice (If your birth date adds up to 8 or 17). Much of the work of these individuals involves learning how to bring balance and beauty into their lives and the bigger world. They also crave simplicity and clarity. They have little tolerance for covert, manipulative and complex strategies. The shadow aspect for these individuals involves being over sensitive to every little aspect that may feel out of balance to them. 9 - The Hermit (If your birth date adds up to 9 or 18). These individuals value harmony, peace and time alone. Because Hermits live with great integrity, others often choose them for leadership positions. They are often wise guides and counselors. Many have natural gifts for organizing and bringing harmony to areas that are out of balance. Their shadow involves a complete withdrawal from friends and family, ultimately living in isolation. 10 - The Wheel of Fortune (If your birth date adds up to 10 or 19). These individuals are creative and original. They are interested in breaking new ground and bringing the future into the present. They are flexible and often see possibilities and solutions where others feel that none exist. Their shadow shows up when they focus too much on ideas rather than on manifestation.
that is in harmony with what they feel (and know) within. Their shadow involves suppressing their own inner needs and emotions in order to meet the needs of family, work and society. 12 - The Hanged Man (If your birth date adds up to 12). These individuals have the ability to see the world and situations from an entirely different perspective. They must honor their own unique path even though the world may not understand them. These are the pattern breakers, the shamans, the dreamers, the mystics. Their shadow involves sacrificing who they are for those they love or a beloved cause. 13 - Death (If your birth date adds up to 13). These individuals are experts in transformation. Although they experience life with passion, they also know when it is time to let go and begin again. They will often act as guides to others in how to live and love fully and how to let go when necessary. Their shadow involves becoming so committed to transformation that they let things and relationships die before their time. 14 - Temperance (If your birth date adds up to 14). These individuals have the ability to take many ideas, people and situations that seemingly are polarizing and synergize them into a new vision that works for all. They see humanity through the eyes of compassion. They love to teach new and transformative ideas. Their shadow side can involve trying to integrate so many ideas and possibilities that they become scattered and unfocused.
Descriptions for tarot cards 15 - 22 will be featured in November 2009’s issue. Skye has specialized in Feng Shui for the home and business for 30 years. She teaches Feng Shui, Tarot, Dreamwork and Gem Therapy at the Northern Star College of Mystical Studies in Edmonton.
11 - Strength (If your birth date adds up to 11). These individuals are emotional, creative, passionate and charismatic. They often have very original and unique ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Many of them will be drawn to the limelight. They are survivors. They have the ability to push through and succeed where others would give up. They must honor their feelings and live an outer life

Understanding and applying natural laws I have a ‘wish list’ and one of the items on it is that every child, as part of their school curriculum, would have two courses included into the core program. One would be ‘Listening to and Trusting Our Inner Knowing’ and the other ‘Understanding and Applying Natural Laws.’ I feel these two courses, along with the other subjects taught in school, would create a well balanced foundation to go out into the world from - no matter what path one chooses.
everything is simply various aspects of that intelligence much like our toes, hands and heart are all different aspects of the same body. This principle takes us beyond the illusion of separateness to the understanding that boundaries are illusion, duality is an illusion, time and space is an illusion. They are simply frames of references that we see the world from. What does this mean to you and me? Well in part it means that everything and everyone, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has a purpose. It also means that we can’t be less than what we came from - that in our wholeness we know ourselves as this vast field of creative intelligence. An Enchanted Moment © Ausilia Corso — www.ausiliacorso.com
by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist
Of course that wasn’t part of my early education and so like many others I spent much of my adult life seeking teachers to help fill the gap. This series of articles focuses on ‘Natural Laws’ and how we can apply them in daily life. The Webster Dictionary defines natural law as: “a body of law or a specific principle held to be derived from nature and binding upon human society in the absence of or in addition to positive law (governmental authority).” In our society we spend a lot of time learning about the laws of church and the laws of government and very little about the laws of nature.
As we further explore that separateness is an illusion, we begin to understand that everything is interconnected and in relationship.
Natural laws have nothing to do with societal morals and laws, however in any man-made law we can see the natural law it is derived from. As we come to explore and practice these simple, profound principles of nature they seem less mystifying and more common sense.
Stop for a moment and take these ideas into your bodymind even if the intellect struggles to grasp the concept. Let your muscles, bones, organs and cells absorb the knowing and observe how it makes you feel.
Let’s start with the principle of ‘The Unity of the Universe’ which all other laws flow from. Science would call this ‘The Unified Field’ or ‘The Theory of Everything.’ For decades the brightest minds in the scientific community have been grasping to understand and find a formula to explain this principle. In essence the unity of the universe asks us to see everything as one vast, field of intelligence and that

I remember the first time I began to chew on this concept. It was through the study of astrology where I was learning (and still am) to see beyond the illusion of time. When I stopped trying to see everything from the tiny perspective of right now and erased the lines that defined past and present, I began to see a bigger picture. My mind, in a small way, began to grasp the interconnectedness of everything. I was blown away by the possibility that everything and everyone is in relationship and connected.

Here is the homework part of this article. In order to play with the idea that everything is connected and in relationship, try the following two exercises. EXERCISE #1 - Either go to tour the local space science center or get a film from the library on the solar system. Watch the incredible order that exists in the universe(s) and how everything has a role and effect on everything else. Then write about you and how you affect people in your life and your environment. What is your purpose? Do you love to initiate, stabilize or create change? These actions connect to the three forces in nature: creation, preservation, transformation. EXERCISE #2 - Think about your ancestral lineage. If you’re a woman connect to your mother, grandmother, great grandmother and men will work with the males in your lineage. Imagine that there is some lesson that (as a family) you’ve been learning. What would it be? How, from the perspective of now, with all the resources you currently have (as compared to one, two or three generations ago) can you make progress with this lesson? Then rather than see the past, present and future as defined periods, erase those lines and imagine it as one continuing journey with different bodies. Write about it the continuation, the connectedness, the evolution, the letting go of the individual ego and seeing it as a collaborative creation. In the next article we explore other natural laws and how to apply them. An Astrologer since 1986, Catherine is also a Hypnotherapist and Meditation instructor. She brings her unique counselling and teaching style to The Northern Star College of Mystical Studies. Call 780-447-3667.

Thank you, Connie. Thanks for having me here as
Connie: I’d like to start off by hearing your story. You were a successful psychotherapist for many years before you shifted your focus to become an authority on shamanism, earthcentered spirituality and power animals. What got you started on this path? Steven: There’s no one particular point where I got started on this path. I was introduced to a shaman about 25 years ago and I thought he looked pretty weird to tell you the truth. At that time I was in a speaking club called Toast Masters learning how to get better at public speaking. One of the fellows brought in a shaman and I thought: “My God. What’s going on?” Here we are in this very conservative Toast Master’s Club and this fellow was brought in. The shaman had a long kind of Fu Manchu mustache braided and long hair and he was wearing this kind of make-shift leather jacket. Anyway, at the same time I was really intrigued by it. So I think it was about a year later that I went to a ceremony that was sponsored by this fellow; his name was Jade. I was so intrigued by it that, since then, Jade and I have become very, very good friends. I’ve spent quite a bit of time with him and he’s in Sedona, Arizona, continuing to do his shamanic work.

Mosaic Magazine — Autumn 2009
And then from there I think what really catapulted me into this was reading a couple of books on shamanism several years ago and then taking a course called Core Shamanism from the Foundation for Shamanic Studies led by or founded by Michael Harner, who’s an anthropologist. Basically his mission is to teach people these core shamanism techniques, to teach as many people as possible. There’s several people that have gone through this core training. Once I did, I just took off. I was grabbing a hold of any kind of training I could get my hands on and continued doing lengthy programs, three-year programs, with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies. I’ve been to some trainings in Tibetan Shamanism and Celtic Shamanism in Huna, or Hawaiian Shamanism, plus some other trainings I’ve done with my friend Jade. It just evolved from there and led to me writing books and creating products such as the Power Animal Oracle Cards and the Messages from Your Animal Spirit Guides Oracle Cards that really are taking some of those elements of shamanic practice and hopefully, at least, introducing them to a broader audience. I’ve often said, Connie, you don’t have to be a shaman or interested in shamanism to seek benefit from some of these techniques (I call them spiritual technologies), that have been around for thousands and thousands of years in one way, shape or form. Connie: Before we go any farther, can you define what shamanism is and also what earth magic is and if there’s a difference between the two? Steven: Sure. First off, shamanism is sort of a catch-all term. But it has its basis in ancient and indigenous people where there were no hospitals or specialists or there wasn’t a medical doctor or a herbologist. He or she was kind of the ‘go-to’ person for when there was an illness. The shaman’s job, really the primary job, the foundation of his work - and I’m going to say his but it could be hers - but the foundation of his work really was to pay attention to and mediate the balance between the human community, his tribe or village, and the natural world. Because as we know, indigenous people today and ancient people, even our ancestors, long ago lived very, very close to the natural world. It wasn’t a separate thing; it was part of how we lived. When illness showed up in the human community it was the shaman’s job to discern what was out of balance, were we taking more than we were giving back to the natural world? When that balance was addressed then the illness could then be treated separately from the fact of it being out of balance. The shaman’s unique gift was to be able to travel into these other realms of spirit world that we could call ‘non-ordinary reality.’ And there he would work with his helping spirits and these could be animal spirit guides or human-looking spirit guides or ancestors, archangels. There could be any number of spirit guides that he would work with. Often though, there were at least a couple of animal spirit guides that he’d work with. And then by working with these spirit guides he would bring back teaching and healing and guidance for the community or the tribe and also how to cure the illness that exists in the tribe either in an individual or group. Earth magic is certainly not a unique term and its relationship to shamanism is this - when I was writing the book Earth Magic, I really had a couple of different titles in mind as I was writing and iLoveMosaicMagazine.com

the methodologies in this book. Connie: In that book, Earth Magic, I was impressed by a lot of parts. But one of the parts was where you talked about the importance of the title, shaman, and that it’s a title that usually designates years of training and wisdom. And I know you can read many places where people call themselves ‘shamans.’ And I would like to know what you think our readers should look for in a shaman.
Grandmothers © Aaron Paquette — www.aaronpaquette.net
Steven: First off I would say, yes, I do make that comment just as I’ve come to believe that that word has been more or less co-opted by our Western culture, especially in new age and metaphysical circles where people maybe do some initial training and have some initial experiences of being able to send their consciousness into this non-ordinary reality or do what’s called a shamanic journey. I was always bothered by people calling themselves shaman with very, very little actual training or minimal training. So I came to this conclusion that if you want to be a shaman there’s two things. One is train with some indigenous shamanic healer for a few years, and then maybe rightfully you could call yourself a shaman. Second is that it’s really not up to the individual to say: “I’m a shaman,” I don’t think. I think it’s up to the community, up to the people - if he has this gift of being able to (he or she, again) has this gift that is practiced and honed of being able to send his consciousness into nonordinary reality and there find the helping spirits that will advise and counsel him to bring whatever is needed back into ordinary reality. then what just sprung at me one time is this stuff that shamanism offers really has a certain element of real magic to it and, looking out at the world, there’s moments - and I’m sure a lot of people experience this; I sure do - there’s just moments where I just bask in the glorious, awesome, miraculousness of life itself and how we’re connected to all of the beings on this planet. What developed from there was using shamanism, shamanic practice, shamanic theory and shamanic methodologies as a bases and I expanded from there into some areas. Once someone reads the book they can discover these other areas that go beyond that. Coming from my experiences of 30-plus-years as a psychotherapist, some of the ideas for instance about trauma show up in Earth Magic and how to treat trauma both from a psychotherapy point of view or a psychological point of view, as well as, a shamanic point of view. The aspects of DNA or plant medicine or working with plant spirits certainly might have a thread that’s in shamanism, but I think this goes beyond shamanism. So that’s where I came up with the tag, Earth Magic, for this book and also for some of iLoveMosaicMagazine.com
So there’s a couple of other terms. Let’s put it this way - I’d probably raise an eyebrow if somebody calls themself a shaman. I might hang around with them to see what they got going. I’ve had the good fortune of meeting a number of shamans. And they don’t really put it on their business card typically. Sometimes they do, but typically they don’t. Plus, again, the culture has co-opted the term to where I think it’s lost its original meaning, that it has that depth of connection to the ancients and the indigenous people. I think that there’s other terms that I think are legitimate, certainly, shamanic practice or shamanic practitioner or shamanic healer. That’s how I would categorize myself, although certainly I’ve been called on a number of occasions a shaman; that’s okay if people see me that way. Again, it’s the community that makes that determination. But a shamanic practitioner or shamanic healer is one who is able to draw from a lot of these ancient techniques of spiritual healing and be able to have some effect in the individual’s or the group’s Autumn 2009 — Mosaic Magazine

Interview continued from page 25 health and healing and wholeness. Stanley Krippner, who is a writer in this field, Connie, says that there’s other types of practice that he calls shamanistic. And shamanistic simply means that they might have a flavor of shamanism and that would be something like, for instance, Reiki. Reiki has a little bit of shamanistic flavor. Certain kinds of bodywork might have a certain kind of shamanistic flavor. Somebody who is a herbologist might be shamanistic in their work. Those are my thoughts on what’s a shaman, what’s a shamanic practitioner, etc. Connie: I’m going to go back to your book again for another part I found really interesting. In your book, Earth Magic, you write about aboriginal stories of creation, how these stories repeatedly included the images of serpents and how these images corresponded to the double helix of DNA. Then you talk about DNA and the ‘New Creation Myth,’ which I really thought was very interesting. Can you expand on that for our readers and how this hypothesis supports the spiritual notion that we’re all one? Steven: Yes, Connie, it’s just fascinating. I get very excited when I talk about this. There’s so much that I could say so I’ll try to keep it condensed. There are several aboriginal stories of creation inevitably involved a being that’s called a rainbow serpent. And I’ve actually come across a couple of different versions of that (that the serpent shaped the land and created the water holes, etc.). What I’m intrigued by that, in relation, to your question is that it’s a serpent. Now there’s a couple of stories that I’ve come across. One is Michael Harner, again. He speaks in his book, The Way of the Shaman, about going to South America in the Peruvian Basin. There he worked with a shaman and unlike anthropology up to that day, (up to that point, and this is in the late 50’s, early 60’s), anthropology was really trying to be a science, trying to be objective. But as we well know now if you’re in the mix then you can’t be objective; it’s impossible to be truly objective. So he participated. And what he did is he participated in what— again, another term that’s come into our culture more is an
26
Mosaic Magazine — Autumn 2009
‘ayahuasca’ experience, which is a plant-based spirit medicine that is used to do shamanic work in that particular region. What he saw, one of the visions he saw, was images of two intertwined serpents. And he just made a footnote in his book that he didn’t know at the time but now he’s kind of thinking maybe it actually resembled DNA. Another anthropologist, Jeremy Narby, wrote a book (one of the only books I’ve read four times), called the Cosmic Serpent, the connection between shamanism and DNA. Narby went to the Peruvian Basin, partook of an ayahuasca ceremony and similarly he saw serpents. When he asked the shaman, the guide, who that was, he said: “That’s the mother plant. That’s the mother. That’s the creator.” So he’s going: “Whoa.” And then he refers to Michael Harner’s book. He does this whole tracing of the number of serpents and snakes that are in various cultures. The symbol of the American Medical Association is intertwined serpents with eagle’s wings. Anyway, he found this throughout ancient cultures whether or not they used plant induced shamanic journeys. Now where I went with that (although I can’t say that it’s completely original, but I just took and ran with this), was something based on what, again, Harner had written about when he was talking about his ayahuasca experience. It’s in the section in the book, Earth Magic, DNA and a New Creation Myth. Here’s the creation myth—and when I say myth I don’t demean it or say that there’s nothing to it. Myth or mythos is the reality of the soul. It’s just as real as this ordinary reality that we deal with. A reality of the soul, what speaks to the soul, are stories like this - stories of how we were created, how the world works, etc. Culture after culture has those. Our culture now has television telling us our cultural stories. It’s always a little sidelined there.

A mix of flowers, pysanky and motherhood by Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn I grew up in an artistic family so you might say art was always in my blood. My grandmother, Elizabeth Sembaliuk, was very well known for her pysanky (Easter eggs) and weaving patterns. My father, a graphic artist, was the designer of the Vegreville Pysanka.
With creative versatility, I love to capture the essence of many different memorable moments from the joy of motherhood, the angst of romance, to the exuberant choreography of my Ukrainian heritage. As a painter, my preferred medium is watercolour. The bold and colourful work I produce demonstrates my unique artistic style that has enabled me to enjoy a busy professional life. My work has toured across Canada, to Switzerland and throughout South America. Collections include Celebrating Women, Baba's Garden, Flowers of the Bible and most recently Dance Me, the feature art exhibit of the 2008 International Leonard Cohen Festival. The impact of my art has reached deeply into the community. Dramatic imagery, combining reflections on environmental beauty and sensitivity, cultural influences and identities and relevant historical moments have brought me international attention and acclaim. My work has been recognized by HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh and can be found representing Canada in many embassies around the world. My illustrations have illuminated over a dozen children’s books. A retrospective of my work, featured in the Canadian bestselling Kazka series of Ukrainian/English readers produced in the 1980’s, is currently on display at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. I enjoy sharing my love of art and am often an artist in residence in local and regional schools and learning centres. More of my work can be viewed on my website at www.artbylarisa.com.

My faith in the spirit helpers that apparently existed on the ‘other side’ was almost nonexistent but I definitely believed in Gene and the deep connection we had. After he died, I didn’t expect anything extraordinary to occur, so I was surprised when I started to feel his presence around me. The first huge thing that changed was my newborn daughter’s disposition. Gabrielle was 1½ months when Gene died and for that first 1½ months, all she did was cry all the time. After he died, the change in her was almost instant! She stopped crying and was content and peaceful. She would smile and coo as she seemed to watch someone invisible to me. I knew he was helping us - and I was SO humbled and thankful.
‘pre-sale’ tickets but all that was available was row 220 and higher. We decided our best bet was to wait until the other tickets went on sale to the general public and buy them online, separately, as quickly as we could. That morning I was ready and waiting, when around 9:55 a.m., I thought of Gene and then sent a little prayer to him, asking him, if possible, to help us get the best seats available as Leonard Cohen’s music was a link to him. At 10:00 a.m., I went on line and INSTANTLY got two tickets on the floor in row 13, seats 5 and 6! This was a huge shock as I had tried the exact same thing for Elton John tickets and ended up in the high 200’s (within minutes of them going on sale).

I’ve felt him continuously since he’s been gone and I’ve had many meaningful signs, dreams and answered prayers too - all which linked to him. Soon after his death, (and this is really odd as I rarely listen to the radio), but every time I would turn it on, I would hear the song: Bird on a Wire. For me, the words in the song were a sort of apology between Gene and I, where we acknowledged our imperfections and offered our forgiveness. This song has continued to link me to Gene but last November it was pivotal. I just drove out of Northern Star College when I saw a man that looked exactly like Gene in a truck very similar to the one he used to drive. It was like I was seeing him alive! Then, ‘coincidently’ at that exact same moment, I had inserted a new CD Catherine Potter had just released (and given to me only 10 minutes earlier), and much to my surprise, Bird on a Wire began to play! The emotional impact was instantaneous - it hit me hard. This sign from him was so powerful that I knew it meant something big. When I arrived home, I went for a walk, trying to figure out what the message could be. As I came back into the house, the phone was ringing and it was sister-in-law, Lina, telling me that Dad was very ill and we all needed to come right away. Suddenly, the sign made sense. My Dad died just two days later.
Because Shelley lives in Bonnyville and her computer/internet is much slower than mine, I waited patiently for her to let me know what she got. However, as time ticked by, I wondered if I should have bought her tickets for her. Over half an hour later, she finally called. I excitedly told her about my ground floor tickets. She said: “What row?” “Row 13, seats 5-6,” I answered. And then something wondrous happened. She said: “We’re in row 13 too! Seats 1 - 4!” My eyes instantly welled up with tears. “Thank you Gene,” I said inside. Not only had he answered my prayer, but he put us side by side! There are over 12,000 concert seats in Rexall Place coliseum, and to think that my sister and I would end up sitting beside each other ‘coincidently’ at a concert this size this was a miracle for me. I knew Gene had helped. I’m not exactly sure what happens when people die but I’ll tell you one thing I believe for sure - they hear us, they see us and they help us. And if it’s possible, they love us even more. It really isn’t about the song and it isn’t about the concert. It’s about the fact that through time and space, we are all ALWAYS so connected to our departed love ones. Talk to them. They hear you.
I knew that Leonard Cohen had written Bird on a Wire so when my sister, Shelley, said he was coming to Edmonton a few months ago, I was eager to go. Shelley tried to buy us
