In this Mosaic… was the end of the coral reef on a beach we often visited and I was so scared because I couldn’t swim well. I would come to the end of that abyss but I was not brave enough to go past it, even though it meant seeing a whole new world… like turtles and sea horses (magical things for me). I was too frightened to just let myself go, to float into the sea and “see” what wonders it had for me. For me, CranioSacral Therapy, was like a life float at that abyss. It helped me release old patterns, old ways of being that were so ingrained in me (at a physical, cellular level) that I had just accepted WERE ME. I didn’t know a different Connie could exist. But as I released old wounded parts of myself (through a variety of other different mind/body/spirit therapies over the years), I’ve discovered a new Connie – one that experiences more moments of bliss, peace and sheer happiness than ever before. boccabellaphoto.com
I felt like I had been given an amazing gift, the secret of life, and I wanted everyone to know what I discovered – that we don’t have to suffer with our past limitations, that we can be free to be all we were meant to be.
by Connie Brisson I can’t believe that this issue, 14 years ago, I published my first Mosaic Magazine. It’s been a journey of my heart and soul, every time. Growing up, while I was very drawn to mystical and metaphysical concepts, I didn’t pursue it because I wasn’t sure if it was real or not. No one around me seemed to be having any extraordinary experiences, so it made me diminish mine. And so, it wasn’t until my brother, Gene’s death (when I was 37 years old) that a metaphysical metamorphosis happened in me. Eight months later, I attended a workshop in Fort McMurray that Doreen Virtue (clairvoyant angel author) was a key speaker at, and where I learned about CranioSacral Therapy which I was so impressed by that I later took almost every level of classes Upledger offered. I’m only telling you this because of one very big reason… that therapy saved my life. No, I wasn’t dying physically. But there was a substantial part of me that was dying emotionally, that just felt so scared, unsure of myself and life, and wanting to give up. The death of my brother hit me very hard and because it coincided with the birth of my baby (and postpartum depression), I was really struggling to cope emotionally. We had also just moved to Fort McMurray and I didn’t know a soul. Gabrielle was a colicky baby and because I wasn’t sure of what I was doing with her, I felt like a failure as a mother. I was metaphorically on the edge of an abyss. Once, long ago in Saudi Arabia after I was first married to Marcel, I was on an abyss just like this in the Red Sea. It

Mosaic Magazine — Spring 2018
When I became the editor/publisher of Mosaic Magazine it was because I wanted to share that AHA – that it is possible for each of us to find healing and peace through different modalities/therapies that help us to release pain/stress, both emotional and physical. I think the key is finding the right modalities, therapies and practitioners (for you) and it’s often a diverse variety of things that evolve as we do. Four times a year, for the past 13 years, I have put my heart and soul into this magazine to make it a shining light that can help people. Starting this issue, to help Mosaic continue to grow and help many others, the entire magazine will be available to view online as a PDF at www.mosaicmagazine.ca I’ve also been working on other ways/ideas I feel will help Mosaic be even better, so please go to pages 20-21 to read about that. I would like to ask each and every one of you to help get Mosaic (online and hard copy) out to as many people and places as possible because the more we spread light, the more the world will be transformed. Join us for our next Mosaic Mystics Meeting on March 6 that will feature LOUISE GRENIER (Homeopath, NeuroLinguistic Programming). Go to the Calendar of Events on page 27 to learn more about this meeting and all the things that Louise will be talking to us about, including some NLP exercises that we will participate in. Last issue, we asked for ideas on ways to make Mosaic even better and I thank everyone who sent in their ideas. I randomly drew the winner and the $100 cash prize goes to Tracy Jackson. This cover has my new logo for Mosaic on it and I’m especially in love with it because my dear daughter, Gabrielle, created it. Well, she might have had a little help from her Momma… www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Chinese year of the Earth Dog The Chinese lunar new year begins on February 16 and we welcome the Earth Dog. Here’s an overview of the gifts and challenges that impact each Chinese astrological animal in the year ahead. Dog: This is a year of change for dogs. Stay alert to opportunities and be willing to adapt to new circumstances. You’re vulnerable to accidents and ill health; it’s a perfect year to develop healthier habits! Pig: At the beginning of the year there are several obstacles impacting your finances and career. But stay positive because things improve steadily as the year progresses. Get plenty of regular exercise and avoid risky activities and behaviors. Rat: It’s an important year for you to network and build alliances. Romance is also positive and singles should attend social gatherings to meet “the one” this year. You’re accident prone so avoid extreme sports and drive defensively. Ox: This is a very positive year for wealth accumulation. You’d be wise to consult an investment advisor for future planning. If you’re in a stable, loving relationship, this is an excellent year to get married. Health is the weak link for you this year, so make time to eat healthy, stay fit and get plenty of rest. Tiger: Like a bouncing ball, your career and money luck is up and down. If you’re in a stable, loving relationship, it’s an auspicious year to get married. You’re more prone to illness so get lots of rest and eat healthy.
Snake: If you’ve been considering a career change or even reshuffling career priorities, this is the perfect year to take the leap! Money is weak early in the year but it gets better as the year progresses. Singles have excellent opportunities to meet “the one.” Elderly Snakes need to make health a priority. Horse: This is a fabulous year to increase your wealth. You may have differences of opinion with work colleagues; iron out your conflicts over shared meals. You’re accident prone this year; drive defensively and be cautious with sharp objects. Romance is only average.

Sheep / Goat: Your workload is heavy but you also have auspicious wealth stars shining upon you. This is an excellent year to develop your skills through on the job training or even going back to school. Romance luck is weak for you but it’s still good to make time to socialize.
Monkey: Your wealth and career luck fluctuate up and down. Budget carefully as unexpected expenses are likely. Romance is weak for singles. Married Monkeys may have partners that are prone to illness this year. Drive defensively and avoid all risky behavior. Rooster: Your income is steady but you may have unexpected expenses to deal with this year. In career, stay with the work that you do well. Married couples will enjoy great happiness this year. Singles are lucky in romance. Get plenty of rest and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Happy New Year! May 2018 be filled with blessings of good fortune for you and your loved ones! Rabbit: Career luck is improving and it’s an excellent year to manifest long held dreams. There are definitely some financial challenges but overall it’ll be a profitable year. Quarrels can erupt between couples so be considerate of one another. Implementing a healthy lifestyle is a priority this year. Dragon: Your sign opposes the Dog, the animal of the year. Budget and build your savings this year and avoid all forms of gambling. Career is pressure filled; make time to build positive alliances with co-workers. Romance luck is weak. Focus on inner development and personal growth this year.

Ritual ceremonies across the life cycle
Our modern life has limited public celebrations primarily to the rites of marriage and funerals. Of course, these are important ceremonies… and yet, there is so much more to celebrate in our life’s journeys. Imagine how different it would have been to have your passage from childhood marked by a Coming-of-Age Ceremony (or ceremonies) that affirmed your story and shared your dreams with family and friends – rather than testing your limits with awkward and insecure experiments with alcohol or sex. Imagine how much more closure would be reached for the whole family if your parents downsizing move from the family home was marked with a Farewell Ceremony of memories and hopes – rather than a garage sale and a hired mover to haul the “stuff.” The modern family is so much more complex than we imagine. Structured ceremony can play a crucial role in cementing oncein-a-lifetime moments into the collective memory of the family – whatever that family embraces. Imagine acknowledging the process of blending two families with children into one with a Commitment Ceremony that expresses the hopes of the years to come. Consider honoring changes of all kinds with a wellcrafted and presented ceremony. Adoption, birth, gender change, or re-naming events can benefit from a planned ritual ceremony that acknowledges the acceptance and love offered to the honoree. Accomplishments of your “heroes” deserve more than a party at the pub – consider a new home blessing or a business opening or grandma’s first university degree. Whatever your family feels the need to recognize deserves the support of a professional Life-Cycle Celebrant.
are and what you envision. The client has complete and final approval over the script. Celebrants then officiate the ceremony with warmth and sincerity while retaining a guiding presence. Finally, the celebrant provides a keepsake document of the ceremony for the family memory. The client questionnaire is a critical part of the ritual creation process. The honoree must have the opportunity to tell their own story. In essence, the celebrant tells a hero’s story and serves as witness to the process. In all of life’s transitions, the hero has to leave behind something in order to move forward and this may be a time with some anxiety. Ceremony can play the role of guiding and easing transitions – even the difficult ones such as separation or divorce. Polar Bear Essence © Monica Castro — www.monicacastroart.com

Your body is energy and matter We live in a world of polarity, of yin and yang, and of balance. Our body is energy and physical matter at the same time. Both aspects must be addressed for optimal health. If you suffer from a chronic disease that shows no sign of improvement, it may be because the medical system is focusing on your physical/material body while your energy/electrical system is being ignored. The true cause of many health challenges is often neglected. In many cases, the cause of your symptoms is not actually rooted in your physical body but is due to your body’s energy not flowing properly. Energy/electricity is a vital part of your body’s health - your beating heart, your expanding lungs and your moving breath. As you read this article, your digestive system is working. So are your kidneys and your liver. Your brain cells are firing and this goes on non-stop 24/7… all because of the electrical nature of your body. The presence of electricity means that you are alive. When the electrical signals in your body stop (imagine the flat line on an electrocardiogram), your body becomes a corpse. No electricity equals no life. A healthy diet is one that provides a wide source of minerals. Once your body absorbs those minerals, they become electrolytes, which are responsible for the electrical signals in your body.
Think of it as the architectural blueprint of a house. If the blueprint is perfect, the resulting house will be built perfectly. The same applies to your body blueprint, which is energetic in nature. If your energy blueprint is perfect, then every cell is going to be created perfectly to ensure your optimal health. I believe that healthcare priorities should consider the body electricity first and the physical/material body second. If some chronic disease is ravaging your body, it is possible that the energy related to the challenged organ has already been in distress for some time. The body’s energy frequently can become compromised after some emotional trauma. When that happens, the energy doesn’t flow easily and physical body challenges start to show. The modern medical system is trained to focus only on the end product, which is the disease symptoms in your physical body. The effectiveness of treating your body’s energy systems first is amazing!

The turnover of cells in your body is constant. Cells in your eyes have a turnover of only a few days, which is why healing is rapid after eye surgery. Your skin cells turn over in about one month as the dead cells exfoliate. It takes about two years for all the cells in your entire body to renew completely. When your energetic blueprint is accurate and healthy, every new cell is created in exactly the right way to act as a liver cell or a bone cell or a pancreatic cell, for example.

Mosaic Magazine — Spring 2018

Seven critical things for 2018 Typically, any given year involves so much planning, effort and even stress that we are pretty “wound up” as it ends. Given this, there is always a “winding down” as one year draws to a close and as a new year dawns. We spend time reflecting on the relationships, connections and outcomes that have transpired. This is healthy. Living with intention and focus is a large key to success and it is difficult to have intention without self-awareness and reflection. A new year provides a valuable opportunity to ponder the past year while anticipating the future year. So, let’s reflect on seven critical things for 2018… The first is to think “next level.” Building the life and business of our dreams starts with desire and motivation, but it takes next level thinking, intentionality, excellence and work to arrive. Thinking next level means that everything is potentially in a state of growth, flux and evolution, as opposed to being static and fixed. The second critical thing for 2018 is simple - play to your strengths. Being well-rounded and average at everything is not as effective as excellence at a few things. In 2018, achievement is not your issue, it’s alignment. Seek to be aligned with yourself. Play to your strengths. You have amazing capacity for greatness when you are dialed into your personal sweet spot and strengths. Abundance easily flows when you are most aligned with your best self! The third critical thing for 2018 is to remember that less is more. Simple pleasures like the warmth of another’s touch, a sunset that paints the sky red, or the gentle dance of trees blowing in the breeze can provide replenishment and empowerment.
objectives, or it can be our greatest hindrance. Positive thinking doesn’t change anything in and of itself, but it empowers us to execute with greater energy, authenticity and empowerment. Negativity drains, attracts negative people with negative energy and costs us the energy we so desperately need to achieve at a high level. Positive thinking attracts other positive people who bring energy and brighter perspectives. The sixth critical thing for 2018 is using your mood for your benefit. Happy people tend to be productive and resilient people who continue to bounce back through obstacles and setbacks. Our daily mood is typically the product of our daily habits and daily thoughts. Highly productive people manage their mood and they do so with consistent self-care practices of exercise, nutrition, sleep, spirituality, healthy relationships and learning. The seventh critical thing for 2018 is that all that really matters is relationships and people. Success and effectiveness can only be measured by the people we serve, the lives we touch and the impact we make. Truly no joy is equal to that of putting a smile on someone’s face, supporting them to achieve a goal or precious thing, or helping them to simply believe in themselves and get unstuck. This is the true stuff of fulfilled living: giving, serving and empowering people. In 2018, all that really matters is relationships and people. Air © Janice Blaine

The fourth critical thing for 2018 is to manage your motivation. Motivation matters. It is the fuel that keeps you going when the mission looks distant and unreachable. Your motivation is the “why” behind the “what” and behind the “how” in your life. A consistently healthy “why” leads to a healthy “what” and a healthy “how.” The fifth critical thing for 2018 is to cultivate your mindset. Our mind can be our greatest asset in terms of positivity, empowerment and support for our goals and www.MosaicMagazine.ca

A dentist and naturopath remove mercury by Dr. Amr Abou-zeid (DDS) & Dr. Amber McKinnon (ND)
Dr. Amr: There are different ways to test for toxic metals aren’t there?
Dr. McKinnon: Dr. Amr, let’s pick
Dr. McKinnon: Yes, there are. We can test for toxic metals
up where we left off in 2017.
Dr. Amr: Almond latte? Dr. McKinnon:
Yes of course! But, I was referring to your SMART certification with the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) on mercury dental amalgam filling removal. What exactly does it mean to be SMART certified? Dr. Amr: SMART stands for Safe
Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique. Silver amalgam fillings contain about 50% mercury by volume. The mercury is locked, to some extent, in the metal mixture; however, many studies have demonstrated constant release. What is worse is that when a dentist takes a drill to these fillings there is an incredible release of elemental mercury that can easily be inhaled by the patient, the doctor and the staff. In my SMART training I learned techniques to reduce everyone’s exposure as much as possible.
in blood, hair or urine. If I find a toxic metal (such as mercury) is high in a patient’s system, I discuss starting a chelation protocol. For this reason, I need a test that I can repeat and that can show stored tissue levels; therefore, I use pre-provocative and post-provocative urine testing. This test looks at any current toxic metal exposures (preprovocative test) and after giving a chelator can also determine if there are toxic metals stored in the tissues (post-provocative test). As most toxic metals including mercury are cleared primarily through the kidneys, it is important that we start with blood work to show a patient’s kidneys are functioning well before testing and starting a chelation protocol. Little Hands, Little Feet © Bev Johnson — bevjohnsonartist.com
Dr. Amr: But what is chelation? Dr. McKinnon: The word chelation simply refers to the binding of some molecule to a metal ion. In chelation therapy we use specific chelating agents such as EDTA, DMPS or DMSA to pull metals from the tissues, and help escort them out of the body. Because different chelators have different affinities for different metals, I choose the chelator that is best for the patient based on their medical history and the results of their toxic metal testing, then work to build a protocol from here.
Dr. McKinnon: I knew you were “SMART,” Dr. Amr… but now SMART certified after all! How do these techniques work?
Dr. Amr: Well then, I’m “smart” enough now to know who to send my patients to, but we haven’t touched our lattes!
Dr. Amr: A carbide cutting bur with high cutting efficiency is used with a lot of cooling water to reduce heat build-up and vapor release. I study the filling and plan a cutting design so it comes out in large pieces rather than having to drill it all out and release more mercury. For my patients, I also use a mercury filtration system, a dental dam and supplemental oxygen (and the staff have protective masks as well). We are minimizing exposure but not ruling it out altogether. This means that a naturopath may be required to reduce the mercury burden in the body?
Dr. McKinnon: That’s right! We wouldn’t want them to get cold! Cheers! Dr. Amr Abou-zeid practices at Nebula Dental, 730 - 91 St., Edmonton (780-540-5266) and Dr. Amber McKinnon practices at Naturally Inclined Health, Edmonton (780-757-7700), www.drmckinnon.com Note: This information is for educational purposes only. It’s intended to supplement your current health program, not to replace the care of a licensed medical doctor. Thoroughly research all topics for yourself.
Dr. McKinnon: Yes! I work with patients to find a supplement routine that they start at least one month before the removal to get their body ready for their appointment with you. The idea is to help their body to better cope with any possible mercury exposure and to help clear it rather than store it in their body. After a patient has their amalgam filling removed, we continue the protocol to help “mop up” any possible exposures. Then, a few weeks later we test for toxic metals.

Rules to live by by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist Under the heading of “passing along positive information” I want to share a recent discovery. As some of you are already aware there are schools around the globe that have a program called: “The Leader in Me.” Based on content from Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (1988 Free Press) and further developed by innovative educators, “The Leader in Me” is a program that promotes principles such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork and collaboration.
I went to as a child/teen. Second, I wished every child and teenager in the world could have such a nourishing environment to grow in and if they did, how within a couple of generations, it would dramatically change our world. Third, these principles correlate beautifully with universal natural laws. I was pleased to learn that “The Leader in Me” program relies on the development of inner qualities supported by congruent action. I also like that it holds the possibility for the discovery and release of the leader and genius inherent in each person (recognized and expressed in a variety of ways). Chances are, when you were a child, you weren’t in an environment where you were taught healthy ideals and habits in such a clear, elegant, integrated way. Universal principles may have been the cornerstone of “rules” you were taught but their essence may have been wrapped up and lost in confusing dogma. Children always find it easier to integrate ideas and ideals when they have a supportive environment (in other words, when they see the adults in their school and at home mirroring back healthy practices).
Day for Night © Maria Pace-Wynters — mariapacewynters.com
With that in mind I would like to pass on the habits from 7 Habits for Happy Kids by Sean Covey (2008 Simon and Schuster Books For Young Readers).” No matter how many self-development courses and books you’ve taken or read, maybe a part of you needs simple, clear direction. Feel free to pass this on to leaders in your family, community, city, country, world. Be nonjudgmental when you pass the information along. Use your heart not a hammer!
I first became aware of the program last September when my granddaughter started Grade One. I was waiting to pick her up from her school and saw posters promoting the “7 Habits for Happy, Healthy Children.” As I was reading the posters I had several thoughts. The first was that this should have been the type of school
12
Mosaic Magazine — Spring 2018
The following habits are taken directly from the posters I saw (based on Sean Covey’s book, copyright © 2008 by Franklin Covey Co.). Focus on bringing one per month into your awareness and daily life. Have fun! Habit 1 — Be Proactive You’re in Charge! I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking. www.MosaicMagazine.ca
Habit 2 — Begin With The End In Mind Have a Plan! I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen. Habit 3 — Put First Things First Work First, Then Play! I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized. Habit 4 — Think Win-Win Everyone Can Win! I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives. Habit 5 - Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood Listen Before You Talk! I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoints. I listen to others without interrupting. I am confident in voicing my ideas. I look people in the eyes when talking. Habit 6 — Synergize Together Is Better! I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas to solve problems because I know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone. I am humble. Habit 7 — Sharpen The Saw Balance Feels Best! I take care of my body by eating right, exercising and getting sleep. I spend time with family and friends. I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school. I find meaningful ways to help others. If you are an educator, parent or community leader interested in supporting or learning more about this program, there is an upcoming “Leader in Me” Symposium in Edmonton on February 14 and 15 and one in Lethbridge on March 14. The person I want to be by Sarah Salter-Kelly Shaman My skis cut a track in the freshly fallen snow as I glide across the surface of the lake. Far below the water bellows a sonic vibration that is deep and resonant as she moves against the ice, causing me to pause and listen. The first time I heard this I had no idea what it was – the sound is simply out of this world - mysterious and primal. The truth is I will forget again, I will get lost in the mental reels of my mind – this is part of the human experience – and somehow, at some point the song of the land will bring me back. Each of us needs experiences where we feel like we are connected and we belong here. It’s through our sense of being part of the Great Mystery that tells us there is purpose and meaning in our lives. It tells us there is a point to what is happening – even if we cannot always explain it in our rational minds. This gives us the strength to be with our suffering and the courage to face our fears. Venturing out into the wild is one way of doing this. Another one of my favorite ways (when outside is not as accessible) is to go on a Shamanic Journey. For this issue I
It never fails to fill me with wonder, touching my certainty that there is so much more to this world than my humble self will ever know. “Magic,” I think, and take a deep breath in.
As I move forward the landscape gives this optical illusion that I will eventually land myself right on the altar of dawn, if I can only ski fast enough, for the lake stretches towards the south east and the banks curve upwards on each side. The sun will rise right in the center of the direction we are heading. There is no one around as far as the eye can see, just the wild power of nature and us. For me, this is where I find God. My wish for the year is to be present. I contemplate this as my breath falls into rhythm in synch with my movements and I take in my surroundings with gratitude. Everything I need and could ever want is here now… the richness of what has cracked me open and the love that mends me. There is room for both and I feel at peace with this.

As the sun begins to emerge from the horizon I feel the midline of my body open to receive this gift of light. This is it. This is the person I want to be, right here and right now - the one who has time for sunrises, the one who has time to be marked by sun and star. It is in a moment like this, where all of my senses are engaged and I feel connected to who and what I am, that my resolve to listen to the knowing part of myself becomes strong and enhanced. It is that part that is ever-present but is sometimes hard to hear over the chaos of the mind. Being out here on the land helps me to remember what is www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Deepen your connection to self and other The physical/mental state of overwhelm is a common experience in today’s world leaving many with the lingering experience of disconnectedness to themselves and others. Trauma is the word used to describe events and circumstances where we are overwhelmed and powerless or helpless to change our circumstances. Examples of emotional and/or physical trauma include parental divorce, death of a loved one, childhood emotional abuse, oppression from a dominate group, growing up in a family where emotions are repressed, being raised by a parent suffering from mental health issues or addiction, childhood neglect, physical or sexual assault/abuse, accidents, medical traumas, near death experiences, witnessing violence, prolonged illnesses, threat of violence, poverty, loss of home and more. At some point in our human existence we will inevitably experience some form of trauma. Why is it that some people seem more resilient than others in recovering from trauma? Trauma that occurs in early childhood is more devastating in that it is occurring during the period of our life when we are learning how to connect to self and others. When we are left in a state of overwhelm for a prolonged period of time as children, we develop ways to cope with the high levels of survival response going on in our bodies. One of the most common is dissociation or disconnection from our sense of self and our bodies. Memory function also becomes impaired leaving large gaps in memory and an incomplete understanding of who we are.
works and in how trauma affects the brain. We now know that trauma or survival responses that have been habituated in the body’s neural networks can be healed over time with the right approach to treatment. Rosen Method Bodywork is one modality that has had a profound effect in helping people recover their capacity for resilience and well-being within their bodies. It is a “bottom up” therapy that focuses on helping people gain awareness of their body and past experiences. This approach accesses the right side of the brain (unconscious) and deeper primal parts of the brain that regulate the fight/flight/freeze response and integrate sensory memory and emotion from the past. This is a great compliment to psychotherapy that uses a “top down” approach that helps people integrate past experiences from their cognitive sense of self (left brain), or in other words, a person’s understanding of whom they are. by Cinnamon Cranston Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner
Rosen Method Bodywork also helps people to feel more connected to the present moment and the possibility for experiencing more connection to themselves within their bodies. Sensations of safe connection to self and other, ease of breath, presence, deep release, aliveness and being inside their bodies start to develop as the trauma is fully experienced and integrated into the whole of their being. The trauma becomes known as an experience and not held in the body as an unconscious identity.
When terrible things happen to people, especially as children, they are left feeling that they are terrible and they grow around this as a belief and their bodies hold this belief in place unconsciously. Rosen Method Bodywork allows people to experience themselves as they truly are and this is a precious gift to them and everyone they touch. As adults we are left with a fragmented sense of self and this makes connection to self and others difficult. It also makes us more vulnerable to the effects of any current or future trauma. Having an overwhelmed nervous system can lead to generalized symptoms of anxiety, depression, addiction and health issues such as irritable bowel, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and autoimmune disorders. The good news is neuroscience has come a long way in its understanding of how the brain and nervous system

Back alley buffet In my last article (February 2017), we talked about the garden and the pharmacy of herbs available for our therapeutic use. Today, we’re shifting gears, moving beyond the garden to the sidewalks and back alleys, exploring all things delicious! It is difficult to imagine anything remotely palatable growing in the cracks of the sidewalk or the broken asphalt of our back alleys. However, by midsummer, you will find a lush variety of edible “weeds” growing from the nooks, crannies and crevasses of your neighborhood - so many so, that I only have room to focus on three of the more well known ones today: Pineapple Weed, Dandelion and Plantain. Pineapple Weed (Matricaria discoidea) is a fragrant, coneshaped yellow-green flower head (with dissected feather shaped leaves) that reaches more than a foot in height by mid-summer and flourishes in areas of disturbed soil. When crushed, the flowers are sweet-scented, bringing to mind the essence of a pineapple. The flower heads can be steeped in hot water and, with a touch of honey, you have a lovely tea - a delightful, locally sourced substitute for chamomile and a tummy soother to boot! The heads can also be dried, crushed and used as flour when making breads, muffins and other baked goods. The leaves, also sweet-scented, can be added to salads, creating something truly unique and delicious. Therapeutically, Pineapple weed has demonstrated to be useful when faced with gastrointestinal upset.
dandelion coffee and dandelion leaves can be added to salads or sautéed like spinach. The leaves are teeming with vitamins and minerals, boasting great sources of both iron and calcium. Medicinally, dandelion is historically a well known diuretic, rich in potassium. Unfortunately, despite the versatility of dandelion, it’s reputation as a pesky weed has been perpetuated by herbicide companies and society’s preoccupation with appearances. Plantain (Plantago major) is found on most continents throughout the world, from alpine to coastal regions; it can even be found on the side of a common gravel road. The stalks can reach up to 15 inches tall, topped with short to long spike-shaped cones, littered full of tiny flowers. The leaves are attached directly to the stem base and can be narrow or broad. Be mindful that this plant species bears no relation to the tropical, bananalike plant with the same name. Seeds from the flowered cones can be collected and added to crackers, breads, etc. The smaller leaves are delicious when added to salads and the larger leaves can be baked and eaten as chips, much like kale chips! Plantain also has medicinal properties and can sooth inflamed membranes, making it helpful for those struggling with bronchitis. Escarpin de printemps (Spring Shoe) © Mireille Cloutier

There you have it, a cornucopia of delicious delights harvested from the most unlikely of places. While pineapple weed, dandelion and plantain grow with abundance, it is important to be mindful when you are gathering them for personal consumption. Remember, the majority of people consider them to be unsightly weeds that need to be sprayed with herbicide, rendering them potentially inedible and dangerous. I hope this adventure beyond the garden has been enjoyable for you. John Joyal is an Earth Spirit Medicine Practitioner & Practical Herbalist, specializing in Herbology and Aromatherapy. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) flower heads, both a delight and a bane to many, are yellow to orange in color, and are suspended on hollow stems up to three inches high. They bleed a milky latex-like substance when broken. The leaves can extend to nine inches and are lobed in shape. Dandelion has an ancient, rich culinary history in Slovenian, Chinese and Korean cuisine. The flower petals have been used to make dandelion wine, the roots can be dried, ground and roasted to make www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Your business is your spiritual teacher Do you feel called to the work you do? Does it feel like something you’re born to do? Does it feel more like it chose you, rather than you chose it? I call this Inspired Work™.
For those of us who feel this vocational impulse, our path to success is seldom smooth, straight or easy. This can be confusing and painful. We wonder: “If this is the work that I’m supposed to be doing (to serve others), then why isn’t it easier? We can stay stuck on a crazy hamster wheel for years repeating the same patterns but hoping for different results. I write this from both personal experience and from my years of supporting others to follow an inner call. In 2012, I found myself back in this place - asking these questions. I needed to understand this for my own peace of mind and also for those who were coming to me for “Inspired Business” support. Here is what I have discovered, what has changed everything! A vocational calling invites us on a spiritual journey the hero’s / heroine’s journey. Therefore, building an inspired business is a spiritual practice. Please stop. This is big. Really take this in. I promise, when you do - it will change your business and your life. Your business is one of your spiritual teachers. When you are able to see this, you will discover meaning, wisdom, insight and delight in every opportunity, interaction and obstacle. You will see clues and synchronicities everywhere instead of barriers. You will shift from feeling unsupported to feeling completely loved and supported. When you see your business as your teacher, you will view each setback or obstacle as merely a piece of the puzzle to be solved instead of as a sign that this isn’t what you are meant to do. When you realize each bump in the road is just the way the Universe is asking you to pause and realign with who you really are, not only does your business grow but so do you. You will stop allowing obstacles to pull you into doubt, questioning your vision and purpose. Instead, when you come up against something that’s not “flowing” the way you hoped, you will simply step back and ask: “What is this here to show me - help me with? What am I not seeing?”
18
Mosaic Magazine — Spring 2018
With focus, faith, consistent practice and commitment you will begin to “see and hear” the answers to these questions. Over time, you will learn how to use the guidance you receive to elevate your life and business to the very place you have envisioned and known since first receiving “your vocational call.” How amazing is that? I know for myself, when an obstacle comes up in my business now, one of the first things I look for is what aspect (of what’s not working) might be out of alignment with who I am, my beliefs, my vision. Sometimes just in evaluating that, I discover some resistance or disharmony which is really the root of why something isn’t working for me. If I’m doing something out of alignment, the universe insists I stop, ‘see’ and make the necessary adjustments. So here’s an invitation for you. What if you give this idea a try? What if you play with the idea that your business is a spiritual teacher - here to help you learn, grow, heal and evolve? What if you looked at your business through these glasses for a week, maybe one month? What might shift and change for you? I’m guessing everything. by Liz Garratt
If you don’t have a business, you can still play with this idea. Choose something that matters to you (a relationship, a job, your health, a dream/ goal) and play with the idea that it is a spiritual teacher. Use the questions I offered above to apply to any area of your life.
Life (God, Universe) loves you. It wouldn’t have given you this gift, wisdom, spark of inspiration, vocational calling if it didn’t want you to succeed. It only makes sense that if you’ve been given something (asked / called to something) that there is also a “plan” to get you there. Your “job” is to simply show up – heed the lessons and clues - go on this inspired journey that is meant to help you grow and evolve. When you do this, you naturally attract those you are here to serve. If you accept my invitation, I would love to hear from you. Email me at liz@harmonybydesign.ca and tell me what you experienced differently by simply changing the way you look at your business - seeing it as a spiritual teacher? Five symbols and supporting gemstones Whenever I feel depleted or lack inspiration, when life has lost its spark, I use the five universal symbols test and their related gemstones to get me back on track. Anthropologist Angeles Arrien discovered that regardless of our ancestry, everyone shares an understanding of five universal symbols or shapes. Through doing a simple test with these shapes, you can identify the current growth process that’s occurring at the core of your being and most important, what you need to feel supported in your life. Before we go further I’d like you to grab a pen and a blank sheet of paper. Draw the five universal symbols on the page: circle, equal armed cross (+), spiral, triangle and square. Now write the #1 under the shape you’re most attracted to, do the same with #2, #3, #4 and your least favorite, #5. Don’t think about this too much; just honor the immediacy of what you’re attracted to. Now here’s the fun part, the shape that you identified as #3, this shape represents your current growth process. When this process is honored and supported, your spark returns and life unfolds with greater ease, joy and harmony. Here’s the key to understanding the shape that you chose in position three. If you placed the circle in position three, you are deeply involved in the process of individuation. You’re like a sponge, thirsty to understand your authentic self and what makes you happy. If you don’t take time and space for yourself, you become irritable and grumpy. These values are essential to you at this time: independence, personal space, time to explore and develop your own identity. The following gemstones will support your growth: blue chalcedony, blue lace agate and amethyst.
an idea or philosophy or a specific group. These values are essential to your current growth: developing meaningful relationships, connection, collaboration, integration and balance. The following gemstones will support your growth: rutilated quartz, kyanite and rose quartz. The spiral in position three indicates that you’re in a process of transformational growth and change. You feel excited when exploring new options, perspectives and ideas. These values are essential to your current growth: variety, flexibility, exploration, change and seeing things in a new light. The following gemstones will support your growth: citrine, clear quartz, moldavite and tektite.

The triangle in position three indicates that you are actively involved in identifying and focusing on specific goals, dreams and visions. Honoring your dreams fills you with energy, optimism and aliveness. These values are essential to you at this time: selfdiscovery, aha moments, holding a vision, pursing goals and honoring new possibilities. The following gemstones will support your growth: carnelian, fire opal, tanzanite, selenite and charoite.
The square in position three indicates that you are deeply involved in the process of building stability and structure in your life. You want results and are ready to implement a plan. These values are essential to you at this time: security, integrity, authenticity, solid foundations, follow-through, accomplishment and attending to details. The following gemstones will support your growth: black onyx, fluorite, pyrite and marble. What’s new in Mosaic by Connie Brisson Here are some of the exciting new things I am working on to make Mosaic even more dynamic… MOSAIC GOES ONLINE - We’re not only going to have the only printed magazine to go everywhere across Alberta and some places in BC, but starting this issue, February 2018, we are going to have that issue also ONLINE FOR THE WORLD to see as a link on our website! It will be the whole issue – articles, ads and all, exactly as it is in the printed magazine. DIRECTORY OF SERVICES – The business card size ads in this section will now be organized by SPECIFIC HEADINGS. So, if you are looking for a specific service (and wonder which businesses offer that service), you’ll easily be able to find it quickly under the new alphabetical heading. For example, if you are looking for businesses that offer energy healing, you will easily find them all located together in one area now. Doing it this way will make it easier for Mosaic’s readers to see which services are offered by which businesses and where they are located. If you’re a Mosaic advertiser, and you’re the only one under that section, it makes it better for you too! But even if there are many choices under one section (and for the readers sake, we hope so!) having your business listed in this way brings focus to exactly what you do. Here are some of the headings that will be available: acupuncture, acupressure, akashic records, angels, animal therapy, aromatherapy, art, astrology, ayurveda, all types of bodywork, books, chakra therapy, chi nei tsang, clairvoyants, cleansing, coaching, colon hydrotherapy, counseling, cranio-sacral therapy, crystals, dentists, detoxifying, doulas, dreamwork, drumming, earth spirit medicine, educational schools, EFT tapping, energy work, equine therapy, feng shui, gemstones, goddesses, graphic design, herbology, homeopaths, hypnotherapy, intuition, journaling, karmic healing, lymph drainage, massage, meditation, mediums, music, naturopaths, neurolinguistic programming, numerology, nutrition, past life regression, power animals, pranic healing, prosperity, psychic development, psychics, reconnective healing, reflexology, reiki, rental spaces, retreats, shamanism, soul retrieval, sound healing, space clearing, spas, speakers, spiritual groups, spiritual growth, tarot, theta healing, travel, visceral manipulation therapy, website design, workshops, yoga and more. If you have a business that offers a variety of therapies (and don’t want to be restricted to just one discipline), we can have broader headings like Holistic Practitioner and Healing Centres, etc.
20
Mosaic Magazine — Spring 2018
If you have a business that you want to have showcased in this way, let Mosaic help you promote yourself. Or, if you know someone who will benefit from this kind of promotion, please pass the information along to them. DIRECTORY BY LOCATIONS – In future issues I would like to implement a directory of business card size ads sorted by towns and cities. Whenever I’m going to visit another place in Alberta (or in Canada, the States and other places), I always spend time going online to find the holistic, mystical, metaphysical type stores and services in that area because every store in every place offers something unique. That sounds easy but it actually takes up a lot of time and I have often wished there was a fast way to go to one place to find what is available in a town or city. And whatever makes it easier for a client/reader, makes it better for the businesses involved. If you have a store anywhere in Alberta or Canada (or the world for that matter now that we are going to be available online each issue), we want to help you let all of our readers know where you are and what you have to offer. Or if you have an online service or store, and want to reach like-minded people, Mosaic could be perfect for you as well. MARKETPLACE – Marketplace will essentially stay the same format (a classified word ad sorted by specific headings) however we will now offer the opportunity for you to have a small 7/8” tall by 3/4” wide photo or logo to be added in conjunction with each ad that is 50 words or over. Sometimes a picture is worth 1,000 words and readers want to see a photo of who they are reading about, so this is an affordable way to do so. www.MosaicMagazine.ca
CALENDAR OF EVENTS – The Calendar of Events will also stay the same, with the option to add a photo or logo (same dimensions as noted above and with a 50 word minimum), but we will now also be placing the events at the end of each monthly ezine/newletter (but without the photo or logo). If you are in the printed magazine, your events will automatically go in. If you want to include an event in the ezine that isn’t in the printed magazine, that will also be an option. So if you’ve missed getting your classified event ad in the printed magazine (and your event is going to happen before the next issue is printed), your event can still be seen by our thousands of ezine readers. If you aren’t already receiving our ezine, go to www. MosaicMagazine.ca to enter your email address to sign up. Once a month you will receive it as an email. It features MORE mind, body and spirit information, not available in the magazine, including Feng Shui, shamanism, crystals, astrology and more.
I also want to invite people to write in about how certain therapies helped them. If you have a story about your healing journey, I’d love to feature it. Just email it to me at mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca SPONSORS – If you are someone who is able to sponsor an article for a writer/practitioner who is not able to afford it, we’d love to hear from you. Printing and distributing a magazine is costly and I would love to feature many more articles about all kinds of things, but I need to be able to pay for all the costs involved. Making the magazine more diverse in content is always a goal of mine. GROUP ADS – If you are part of a team of holistic workers, you may want to consider doing group ads or articles that share your expertise. If a few people share the cost of an ad or article, it becomes far more affordable while still getting your business out there in a big way. YOUR IDEAS – If you have any ideas for ways of supporting Mosaic’s growth in the world, I’d love to hear from you. We’re all in this together... and it’s your support (whether as a reader or advertiser) that makes it possible for this magazine to be a bright light in the world. Let’s continue to do good things together.
Peaceful Teacher © Bernadette McCormack — www.bernadettemccormack.com
YOUR STORIES – I am very interested in hearing your experiences/stories about how Mosaic has helped your life in some way – whether it’s an AHA from reading the articles in each issue, or finding a service/practitioner that helped you, or going to an event that changed you. If you LOVED something or someone who you’ve found in Mosaic, please send me your story because I think it’s really important to spread positive energy. If someone or
something helped you, I’d love to know about it. I’d like to start including these stories in upcoming ezines and in the printed magazine when possible.

Meditation for your soul For many, the goal of meditation is about reaching a relaxed state, a place where tension and worries disappear if only for a moment. This however is not the only benefit of meditation. There is a space in meditation called “samadhi.” In samadhi the mind becomes still, tranquil. Samadhi is oneness with Divine, whatever your version of Divine is. And who doesn’t want that! My personal practice is not always samadhi and I have no expectations, but there are glimpses of quietness, awareness and tranquility. By letting go of the “what” should happen in meditation and just allowing it to unfold naturally, I have received the greatest benefits. Meditation can also be uncomfortable and that’s okay. By sitting in the uncomfortableness it still allows the space to be developed. There are many ways to meditate and what works for you one day may not resonate with you another. Be patient and explore to find the best fit. You will know when you found it because it will be almost effortless, like a best friend greeting you. Following is a guided meditation that you can try. I recommend reading it through first and then deciding how to practice it. You may want to use your phone to record yourself reading it so you can relax easier. Find what works for you. I’ve also included a free download on my website (www.anjaniyoga.com) for Mosaic Magazine readers, of the extended meditation for you to sit back, listen and enjoy. Begin by getting comfortable. Perhaps that means lying down or covering up with a blanket. It doesn’t matter how you are, just if you are comfortable. If at anytime you need to adjust do so. Bring your awareness to your breath. There’s no need to change it; just notice your natural breath as you inhale

and exhale. Begin now to do a guided body relaxation. There’s no need to move your body parts, simply just bring your awareness to them. Bring your awareness to your feet, feel your feet relax and tension start to dissolve. Bring the relaxation to your ankles, your shins and calves, thighs and your hips. Feel the relaxation spread to your back, stomach, chest and shoulders. Your arms and hands are heavy and relaxed. Feel the tension melt away from your head and your lower jaw relaxes. With each breath your body relaxes more and more until you are totally relaxed. Now come back to your breath; begin to lengthen your inhale and your exhale. See if you can inhale and exhale to the count of four (or any number that works for you). Like this: Inhale, four, three, two, one. Pause and exhale, four, three, two, one. Pause. Four parts of your breath. Try it on your own for a little bit. Perfect, now leave your breathing and notice that you are sitting on a rock in a forest. Feel the rock beneath you. The trees above have a clearing that is allowing the bright sun to shine through onto you. Feel the sun on your body. As you look around you see all the trees; take a deep breath and smell the pine. You can even hear the birds flying about. Perhaps you even see a squirrel. Just enjoy this moment. Orange Meditation © Cindy Revell
by Lisa Buckland
You look down beside the rock and notice a book with your name on it. Pick up the book and feel it in your hands. Is it heavy or light? Big or small? Slowly open the book and look what’s inside. There is a message just for you from Spirit. What does it say? Take a moment to reflect on it. How can you integrate this message into your life? Once you’ve assimilated it, you put the book back down, knowing that each time you come back to this rock the book will contain exactly what you need to hear or know from Spirit. Thank Spirit for its message. And when you’re ready, bring your awareness back to your breath and back to your body in your room. And give thanks to yourself for allowing you this practice. Namaste. Con Amore
(Italian) With heart and soul
It must be love I never felt like love came to me easily – certainly not for the first half of my life. It seemed like I always had to grovel or pay for it dearly. Growing up in my family, love was a confusing commodity. It was like we were in a foster home situation, all from different families but stuck together, and so it was each dog for himself. And from that place of inner isolation I often used to pray to God that I would find just one person who would love me truly and endlessly; someone who I could be safe with and from that center, I could just fly and be all that I was meant to be. That was truly my earnest prayer for years. Now, I know that we attract what we are used to and so, was it any wonder, I later attracted certain men to me… men who loved me (kind of, maybe sort of) but not more than they loved themselves (and a few others at the same time). I didn’t know it at the time but I was unconsciously recreating destructive relationships based on my dysfunctional beliefs about love – and what I deserved. Then, when I was almost 29 years old, I had one of the most important/pivotal days of my life, with my mother. That day, we had a very emotional conversation that transformed me. It’s so very personal I can’t share details, but in the end what she said changed me (at the very core of me) into believing that she truly loved me. And then my universe changed like a “big bang” had occurred - because it energetically had. We get what we believe and once I believed I was lovable, the Universe rushed in to give me the big love I had always asked for… in Lloydminster. It was August 1991 when my brother-in-law, Don Weber, told me about a job at LML and (after getting it) I moved to Lloydminster. Amusingly, history will recall that when I first met Marcel Brisson (LML Superintendent Extraordinaire), I was uptight and not too friendly, although he certainly was. Having read his personnel file, I knew he was divorced (and therefore possibly available) and the father of three teenage children. But I was also trying to be smart, careful. Certainly, at the time, in no way did I receive a message from the Universe that he was the “one.” But after working with him over the next year, all the while watching him and seeing how honorably he treated

other people and how exceedingly well he did his job, I started to really admire him… And in the midst of all of this, one night, I read (in a Louise Hay book) how making a list – a conscious list – of all the things we want, can draw it to us. So, one night, I wrote out a list of all of my “husband qualities” and some of them were a little outrageous. In fact I said how I wanted to live overseas and experience a different life.

And then, Marcel Brisson cooked me an amazing meal in July 1992 and that was the actual beginning of our love story. Soon after (March 1993) we got married, moved to Saudi Arabia for over a year and I got to live the exotic life that I had wished/prayed for in my list.
And although we are about to celebrate our 25th anniversary this March, I’m honestly telling you that we’ve had both highs and lows… because any marriage that survives LIFE takes a lot of love, energy, work and maybe most of all, respect for what is truly good and precious in the other person. I can’t write about our love story without also celebrating the greatest part of it - our beautiful daughter, Gabrielle who just turned 18 years old. I do not know how much less of a person I would be if I had not had this amazing child in my life. She has taught me so much about so much. She’s extraordinary. And Gabbey is the girl she is because she had a remarkable father, who has loved her beyond anything, and who has humbly taught me about love too. And now we are here at last to my dear husband, Marcel. God could not have given me anyone more perfect than you. You’ve let me soar to places I never could have hoped for and you’ve also grounded me in the real world when I needed it, helped me to see my worth. Amidst deaths and triumphs, you have always been there for me, a silent soldier ready to champion anything that touches me. Not many people can say that they love the person they’ve been married to more and more, each and every day, but I can. I love you Marcel and am so thankful for you. Long ago I used to watch the movie Casablanca and think that I wanted a husband like Humphrey Bogart. It wasn’t until years later that I realized that Marcel reminds me of him so much (such much), even sometimes in his looks, moods and manner. What we dearly wish/pray/believe in, (I truly believe), does come true… Happy 25th Anniversary husband.
