I Love Mosaic he was with us. I think that was the first time I’d ever seen a ‘real’ owl in my life and now when I do rarely see them, they remind me of Gene. I feel like I’ve also received signs from my Mom and Dad since they’ve passed too. A huge one was a letter that I received after my Mom died (via my older sister) that she had written to me about 14 years earlier but that had been hidden away. The signs have come in all shapes and forms. Sometimes it’s through birds, feathers, animals, butterflies, songs, food, flowers, words - through whatever holds special meaning for us.
by Connie Brisson I believe! I don’t watch a lot of television but I love, love, love this new show, Long Island Medium, on TLC (Channel 35 on Shaw) on Sunday nights. It’s all about the life of an amazing medium, Theresa Caputo. It makes me believe even more that our loved ones are still with us. It’s something I’ve believed and felt ever since my brother Gene died in 2000, but this show makes me an even greater believer. In fact, as I was watching a recent episode, I felt a little jealous that all of those people were getting messages from loved ones on the ‘other side’. So I mentally asked Gene to send me some kind of sign that he could indeed hear me. A few days later, my husband Marcel came back from a business conference in Vernon, B.C. He presented me with a beautiful little blue package and inside was a Swarovski crystal owl. Marcel said it had reminded him of Gene and he wanted to get it for me. I was so pleased! First, that Marcel had been so thoughtful; second, because it was an owl; and third, because I felt it was a definite sign/answer from Gene… The first Christmas Eve after Gene died, about a mile away from my parent’s farm, we saw the most beautiful white owl sitting on a fence post (in the middle of the afternoon). When I spotted the owl, I had Marcel stop the vehicle. Despite how close we were to it, the owl did not budge. As it stared at us, time stood still. There was something very magical about the owl and the moment. I told Marcel: “That owl is from Gene.”
On one episode of the Long Island Medium, Theresa asked a lady if she could ‘feel’ the presence of a relative that had passed (because Theresa said she was getting the message that this lady could definitely tell). The lady replied that she could, but that no one else believed her. Theresa then told her that the only thing that mattered was what she knew inside to be true and to believe that. I think a lot of us can relate. We have these amazing ‘coincidental’ things happen to us and inside we know what it means for us, but it’s hard to explain to someone else or if others don’t ‘get it’, we sometimes doubt ourselves. I think that’s what is great about Mosaic. It’s a magazine where you can read personal stories and access information about topics you can’t just read many other places… secret treasures. Sometimes the stories will confirm something you’ve already experienced yourself and other times they’ll open up a whole new world of possibilities… and hope. Each issue of Mosaic is a labour of love and takes many hours of hard work before it gets into your hands. And I do it (with the wonderful help of Mosaic’s graphic designer Carol Pylypow, all my writers, advertisers, artists, distributors and others) because I am a believer. I believe in what we are doing. I believe the information in this magazine has the potential to change people’s lives for the better. It only takes one little change to create a ripple effect that not only affects you but many others you touch. We’re all in it together. I believe that. I also believe ☺ that it would be wonderful if you could join us for our next Mosaic Delicious Book Club Dinner on Wednesday, December 7 at Phoenicia Lebanese Restaurant, 10406 Mayfield Road, Edmonton. We’ll talk about The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin (HarperCollins 2009). Email mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca by December 6 if you can come. Christmas Eve was the one time a year when all of our family would get together and, as that would have been the first time Gene would not be there, it was a very difficult day. But that owl soothed my heart. I felt it was a sign from Gene that

Try the relaxing yoga pose of Savasana by Ivy Stevenson Certified Hatha Yoga Teacher Ever since it found me, that auspicious April evening some years ago, my life is continually graced and transformed by yoga’s subtle teachings. It hasn’t simply been the practice of yoga asana (postures) alone that’s been the catalyst of great change. It’s also been the process of taking the teachings of yoga off of my mat and into my moment to moment daily life. By learning to live more aligned with the principles and wisdom of yoga, I have created more room in my life for love, forgiveness, compassion, power, authenticity, gratitude and much more. One of the most powerful and yet simple yoga poses is that of Savasana (corpse pose), in which yogis lay on their mats for a period of 10-20 minutes, well, like corpses. Many teachers feel that the foremost purpose of a sequence of yoga postures is to lead into and prepare the body, mind and spirit for the deeply relaxing experience of Savasana, as it’s an integration phase that allows the benefits of one’s practice to infiltrate into all aspects of our being. Savasana is often likened to experiencing a ‘minideath’ each time we practice, for in Savasana we utterly let go of all we do not need and let our beings sink heavy into the earth. Imagine that you have seeds planted with love in fertile soil, then Savasana is the safe womb of night where all rests, is nurtured and roots take hold. Savasana creates a sacred space so one can turn inward, rejuvenate, completely relax and let go. The physiological rewards of Savasana alone are very impressive. It creates a decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension and fatigue of the body and mind. As well, Savasana gives the nervous system a much needed opportunity to rest and rejuvenate. Mental benefits include a reduction of stress, anxiety, mild depression and insomnia. It also provides improvement of concentration, focus and memory.
To begin, lay comfortably on your back. For any lower back discomfort place a bolster under your knees. Have your legs spread mat-width apart and relax them so your feet roll outward. Lay your arms gently a short distance from your sides with your palms facing the sky. Softly close your eyes, relax your face and deepen your breath into the depths of your belly. With each renewing inhale, imagine you’re bringing vital energy into each part of your body, beginning with your toes. As you scan in detail and breath into your entire body, let every part fully relax, grow heavy and melt through your skin and mat into Mother Earth for her to nourish. Stay here for some time and simply be. After 10 - 20 minutes, feeling greater life force present in you, begin to bring your awareness back into your body by wiggling your fingers and toes. Slowly roll onto your right side and then use your hands to help you back into a seated position. Take a moment to feel this sense of rebirth and set an intention for the rest of your day. As with any yoga pose, Savasana takes practice. It may sound easy but the practice of turning inward and creating complete relaxation of the body and mind does not come easily for most of us. I encourage you to try this pose for a series of days (hopefully more) to see if you notice any difference in yourself and your life. I love to remind everyone (and myself) what my teacher Ally shares… No matter what your level of studentship of yoga is: “Yoga always meets you where you are, and never leaves you where it found you.” Ivy is a Certified Pre-Natal, Post-Natal and Hatha Yoga Teacher. When you consider how differently we react to situations when we come from a calm and centered place, how couldn’t incorporating this one pose into your daily life change you for the better?

EnviroKats litter offers eco-friendly options How many times do you consider the impact of your actions on our Mother Earth? Once you make that fundamental shift toward harmony with our environment, priorities change. Reduction and sustainability come to the forefront when making household purchases or consumption choices for ourselves and even our pets. Our family consists of my wife, Ivy, and our three cats - Grey, Iana and Ninja. As Ivy and I became more conscious of the environmental impact of our choices, we began re-evaluating all the items in our home and their global consequences. Ivy came across the EnviroKats website late one night and found a re-usable kitty litter made from a recycled material old tires! EnviroKats was invented in Phoenix, Arizona in 2009 by John King. Bothered by the many abandoned tires left littered across the wilderness of the Phoenix, Arizona region, John had the idea to take tires and turn them into something useful. His first inspiration was to attempt to make landscaping material, when he stumbled across the idea for kitty litter (as the crumbled tire resembled cat litter). His partner, Kat, was involved in a cat rescue which became the testing ground to see if the idea would work. It had such great success that word began to spread and the EnviroKats litter box system was born! We ordered a couple of boxes but discovered that brokerage for this EnviroKats kitty litter to clear the US/Canadian border was a whopping $250.00! It turned out that we were John’s first Canadian customers, so he had no idea it would be that much! After a few emails back and forth about how to get this kitty litter to our house, we concluded that the easiest way was to fly to Phoenix, pick it up ourselves, and then we discussed how we might be able to help John extend his reach for EnviroKats here in Canada.
Since conception of EnviroKats Canada, we’ve done a fair bit of research on the topics of cat litter. Here are the highlights: • The silicone used in conventional cat litter is actually toxic for cats (and humans) and the dust is harmful to the respiratory and digestive systems. • An estimated 3 million tons of litter waste every year end up in landfills in North America alone. • To extract the clay needed for litter, strip mining is used which destroys thousands of acres of habitat to gain access to it.

by Jeff Stevenson
In my opinion, any litter that reduces the use of the conventional ones is a great option. These include newspaper litter, cedar chips, corn husk, etc. What makes John’s EnviroKats superior even to those options, however, is that the use of recycled tire as litter is breathing second life into an item that will otherwise sit in a landfill indefinitely. Also, it is totally reusable!
Our lovely cats have been EnviroKats users for over six months now and we haven’t had to change the litter once or even add more litter. A simple poop scooping followed by a rinse of the litter and draining of the residue (through John’s convenient double box system) and it is ready to go for another round! This saves you time and hassle spent on trips to the store for cat litter refill, not to mention the cost savings! You won’t need to buy kitty litter again! Jeff Stevenson is the co-director of Ahimsa Yoga Life Inc. which manufactures and distributes EnviroKats within Canada. He can be reached via email at jeffandivy@envirokats.com or www.envirokats.com
The outcome was that Ivy and I would manufacture and distribute the kitty litter in Canada through Ahimsa Yoga Life Inc., a company dedicated to the development and promotion of innovative, sustainable ideas. And just like that, EnviroKats Canada came into being. We purchase our recycled tire litter from a facility that uses tires gathered from within Canada, which means that using EnviroKats helps local environments immediately!

Access the healing wisdom of your body At the dawn of the 21st century a more holistic health consciousness has begun to awaken in us. We now suspect that our physical symptoms are not just a sign that something in our body is wrong and needs to be medicated, but a plea for help from the healing wisdom of our body. What if most of our symptoms, even our physical pain, is simply a request: • first, for attention, to discover and contact the long neglected part of our body where that symptom is rooted, • second, to feel for (or interpret) what is the root and the unhealthy situation that has precipitated the symptom, • third, for support and energy, to make the changes that begin the healing. Many of us suspect this, but don’t know how to make that connection. If I told you that I could help you listen to, and then empower your body - and journey into a state of wholeness and balance unlike anything you had experienced before - would you give it a try? For five years I have practiced Chi Nei Tsang (CNT) because it is the therapy that best reawakens the body’s natural healing intelligence. CNT uses energy, relaxation breathing and gentle touch techniques to connect to the core and engage all levels of consciousness. Because the work is done gradually, the client becomes calm and senses support. The mind quiets, anxiety and fear diminish and space is created to feel.
into his abdomen. As his breath descended, he became aware of intense feelings he’d stored deep in his belly. His breath, along with my gentle Chi Nei Tsang touch, made him aware of a place in his belly where an emotional trauma had long been buried. With the support of my subtle CNT touch, George could breathe and feel, contact and, without thinking, begin to digest his massive grief. He had begun the process of emotional digestion. George had addressed his core issues, and his physical tissues began to release. His body no longer needed to send the signal of pain. His symptoms were a signal from his deep inner self to let him know that it was time to change, time to heal and grow. And Then We Knew It Was Over © Phil Alain
by Laurelle Johnson Chi Nei Tsang Practitioner
In subsequent sessions, George realized that as he deepened his connection with himself, his body responded by transforming and then resolving internal conflicts. CNT had helped George restore a sense of balance within. I have witnessed a similar transformation with many other clients who come in with IBS, acid reflux, indigestion, and other symptoms related to a deeper emotional pain.
When I see this transformation in my clients I am reminded that when one part of us changes, our whole being changes. If the healing wisdom of your body was calling, would you take a deeper look? Laurelle Johnson’s practice includes Chi Nei Tsang and Visceral Manipulation in both Edmonton and Calgary. Other passions include Soul and Womb Healing, as well as meditation - all three of which she has studied extensively in India. You can reach her at 780-428-5572. My client ‘George’ was a good example of the dictum: “the issues are in the tissues.” Indigestion and its attendant discomfort were the symptom that brought him to my office. When I questioned him further, he said he often felt depressed, tired and powerless. George was still carrying the responsibility of raising five children after his wife had passed away, eight years ago. The weight of his loss had begun to take its toll on him, manifesting in digestive complaints and depression. Understanding that our breath is an inner bridge that connects all levels of awareness (physical, emotional and spiritual), I encouraged George in the first session to relax and expand his shallow breathing from his chest down ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

Sound-Infused Raindrop Therapy Music literally is all around us. Sit quietly and listen for 30 seconds. Even if you’re in a familiar place, you’ll hear things you’ve never noticed. Most of us hardly notice the sound all around us. We are designed for filtering out the peripheral. The problem comes when we begin to focus on the urgent, rather than the important. Because the important isn’t always the most urgent, we tend to lose our connection to it, and find ourselves out of tune with our true purpose. As a child, I knew that music would be my lifelong path. It moved me like nothing else. I learned to play every instrument I could get my hands on. But I had a practical father who advised me to enter the field of health care after high school. “Music will always be there, but you need a career that earns a living.” For years, I learned and worked in the scientific, practical and holistic fields of health. I began to practice Raindrop Technique, developed by Gary Young. I fell in love with the essential oils I use during a treatment. They have the uncanny ability to work on a high vibrational level, while keeping you wholly present in the physical moment through their strong fragrance. But I still felt there was a missing piece, something that would bring the music back into my life and my practice. I felt like I’d begun to pay attention to the urgent, rather than the important with my clients. Then I was introduced to sound therapy, and my world changed. The music was here! I discovered a system where I could help to remind my clients of their individual true purpose, where music opened doors in the soul that I could not access otherwise. By using tuning forks on acupuncture points, my clients began seeing instant results-and no wonder, since sound travels 4.3 times faster through the water in our bodies than though the air. When combined with the application of essential oils, Sound-Infused Raindrop Therapy came into being.
the oils, while tuning forks are applied to acupuncture points to balance and renew energy. The tuning forks are tuned mathematically to the earth, moon, sun, and other celestial bodies, based on the work of Kepler and Coustu. Kepler figured out the velocity of the planets around the sun. Hans Cousto built on Kepler’s work, transposing the frequency into hertz. The natural frequencies as reflected by the velocity of the planets in their orbit around the sun are calibrated into the tuning forks. They resonate with Pythagorus’ Music of the Spheres, the theory that the Universe is, at its heart, music. The tuning forks serve as a potent yet gentle reminder to our bodies of the musical symphony in nature and in ourselves. The specific frequencies used during a session are chosen based upon each client and upon the clients’ changing needs from session to session. There are many reasons to seek out a session of Sound-Infused Raindrop Therapy. Children love to receive the treatment, especially to ease the symptoms of a cold or flu. It is helpful in easing stress and tension, symptoms of depression, anxiety, MS, athletic muscle pain, fibromyalgia, low back pain and many other chronic conditions. Every session is a healing song, waiting to be written. Crystal Clear © Monika Dery

Turn your stress into energy and wisdom by Dr. Robin Browne Doctor of Chiropractic
reorganize stored stress into the fuel and wisdom it harnesses as vibrational energy.
Stress is an essential part of thriving in life, but when it becomes too much it is a major source of illness. It doesn’t have to be that way.
Everything we need to know and all the fuel we need to heal and grow can be discovered in the stress we hold in our body. When you first develop the skill of connecting to stored stress, you’ll notice your digestion, energy, and your quality of rest improve. Your ability to focus, your clarity and certainty start to come back. Your symptoms will begin to alleviate.
The first clue that stress is available for fuel and wisdom is a body symptom. When the stress mechanism of the body is overloaded it mimics the effects of starvation: low energy, aches and pains in one or several parts of your body, uncomfortable emotions, reduction of movement and flexibility and/or need for protection and retreat. Basically, it becomes difficult to move, to feel capable, confident or focused. Even your breath doesn’t feel ‘free’; often it will be shallow. The next problem is to find the stored stress that’s fuelling the symptom. It’s problematic because our defense fight or flight mechanism can’t recall where the stored stress is after it stows it away. That’s how it helps us not feel the stress it stores.
I use light touches at specific places along the spine to help my patients become more aware of where stored stress is available for harvest. As they develop intermediate skill to focus on stored stress, they notice that old habits automatically become healthier choices without even trying or thinking about it. This happens because their refined ability to connect has turned into a new habit of transforming stress into awareness and drive.
On His Throne He Ruled © Phil Alain — www.philalain.com
I’m passionate about the role that breath, focus and movement play in our ability to heal. In my chiropractic practice I use Network Care to show my patients a simple way to focus on the stress stored in their body. For those who do it and are inspired, I help them learn 12 breath exercises that become a shorthand language for knowing where you are in your healing journey. Knowing how to focus on the stress stored in your body can transform your pain and tension into a source of fuel and wisdom.
When you feel connected, together and whole, you tend to make choices that will support your healthier state. The level of organization within your body and your ability to feel and acknowledge it, become your wisdom and are the happy side effect of authentic healing. Breath, movement and focus can heal your life; the proof is in the pudding. Network Care is a method of whole body healing that helps you develop skills of connection that will enhance your healing abilities for a lifetime. Robin offers Network Care at New Strategy Wellness Centre. It’s exciting how easy wellness can be. To get started today call 780-429-0023.

So how do you find it? Clue 1: You will tend to stop or limit breathing into an area of stored stress. Clue 2: Even if you try to breathe into an area of stored stress it will resist any movement because areas of stored tension don’t want to be found. Clue 3: Approaching these areas in a way that would be dishonoring will trigger your defenses. Next you’ll need to know how to assess where you have the best skill of connection with your body and your experience. Once you know where you have connection you can use this body awareness place as an anchor to

Choosing your Reconnection® Practitioner by Kimberlay Kiernan Certified Reconnective Healing Practitioner
a meaningful way and then they seek out the practitioner that is perfect for them. The timing is always perfect too, as the magazine or brochure may sit on a desk for months before the client finally feels ready to call.
You’ve read all about it and feel ready to have a Reconnective Healing session and/or The Reconnection®. Now it’s time to choose a practitioner, but there are so many. Which one is the right one for you? That’s a great question.
Sometimes location alone can be a contributing factor. One person called practitioners within a certain area and asked all the same four questions: price, location, a typical session and their experience. In the end she chose by an indefinable quality in the voice of one practitioner. Yet another person left several messages and then selected the first practitioner that responded.
Winter Barn © Karen Bishop
There are as many answers to that question as there are practitioners. First, ensure you choose one who is qualified. ALL trained Reconnective Healing Practitioners access exactly the same frequencies.
I personally chose a practitioner because of a big ‘coincidence’ in our email addresses. Another lady felt a connection to her practitioner because of a synchronistic comment about a dragonfly and someone else felt a connection to a practitioner because of her photo. Sometimes it’s because they’ve met the practitioner at an event. If you trust your intuition you will not be led astray but, if for some reason you are not comfortable with the results of your session, be willing to visit another practitioner.
“There are thousands of trained, highly proficient practitioners. These people are all able to bring about the same results. The Source is God, Love and/or Universe (choose your word) who is always with all of us. The practitioner is simply a catalyst through which these healings have been introduced to the world.” That’s a quote from the official Reconnection website, www.TheReconnection.com, that has a Practitioner Directory, listing all trained practitioners (for a local list, please see the adjacent page). Choosing a practitioner should not be done randomly. You must feel comfortable with the practitioner you select. This is critical so don’t underestimate the importance of this. We all resonate with some people and not with others. Trust your ‘still small voice’ inside.
I’ve had a couple people who ‘experienced Reconnective Healing’ with others before they came to see me and one who actually did the first half of the Reconnection with another practitioner but did not proceed because she felt uncomfortable. She later came to me based on what I wrote in a Mosaic article. After her final Reconnection she said: “Wow, what a difference! I KNOW I got ‘Reconnected’! THIS felt right.” No matter who you choose or how you choose, what is ultimately important is that YOU feel comfortable and get your healing or Reconnection. Kimberlay Kiernan is a Registered Nurse, Educator, Certified Reconnective Healing Practitioner®, Certified Hypnotherapist, and Co-creative Life Coach practicing in Leduc. There are no accidents and no coincidences. I have always maintained that exactly the right clients are brought to me at exactly the perfect time. How they find me is always interesting! One client put the names of all the practitioners she found in a Mosaic ad into a bowl and said: “best of three.” She drew the same name the first two times. Thinking this must be a coincidence she announced: “best of five” and promptly chose my name again for the third time! She then felt clear that she had been ‘told’ whom to call. Often something written in a Mosaic article or ad, or a business card or brochure, will resonate with someone in

Work through ideas and actions by first testing them against your VALUES. How do you want to live your life? What gives you a sense of self-worth? How would you like others to respond to you? Take time now to really understand what you want to achieve personally in your life and then measure every decision and action against this framework. Consequently, you will find that sometimes it will be appropriate to adopt an extreme view whilst, on other occasions, it will be more beneficial to take the middle ground. Being crystal clear on your values allows each decision to be tested so that you can then move forward with commitment, confidence and clarity. Remember, struggle is imprisonment; for you to see improvement in your health, ‘RELEASE’ should be your watch word. Sue is also an Intuitive Life Coach. bySherry Martini Certified Angel Therapy Practitioner The first thing the angels said is: “Give yourself what you need!” They’re showing your past where a deep-rooted belief was formed that it’s not okay for you to come first in your life. Also, there is some balancing out from your past that has not occurred yet because you are still holding on to it. Associate it like food: If you were to eat something that would cause food poisoning, how much would you want that food out of your body? Now apply this to your everyday life with the past and present. This conscious awareness can help you to move forward. Have compassion for yourself and recognize all the choices you made were for you to be at peace with.

The angels are showing that you will be well again if you move forward with this awareness of understanding yourself. They are stating that you have not made yourself a priority in a long time. by Noelle Parenteau Psychic Medium Your fear will not let you move forward without addressing this pain you carry from long ago. Go inside and search your childhood for a much needed release. You can offer this ‘small self‘ the loving support that is needed to make this inner child safe to come forward and willingly release the pain. You can do this through your method of choice but you must not believe you can go forward carrying this pain. This is causing you much distress and will hold you in this place of concern for a long time unless you do indeed go within and realize the truth of these matters. We see you are stuck on this primary experience that has made you view things from a tainted perspective. You need not worry about these times as you can, and will, go forward to your desires and dreams once you let go. You cannot accomplish things in the NOW when you have much time spent in the PAST, be it conscious or not. We see you can offer much to others and this is also causing a tug-awar for you as you push to go forward but are many times pulled to the past. We are here to assist you once you are willing to go there. Noelle has a Ph.D. in Metaphysics from the University of Metaphysical Sciences. Healing with the ultra green colors by Jackie Pearce Certified Colour Sound Therapist
plant that has a turquoise frequency which is one reason it is so wonderful for a burn and is found in most skin products, especially lotions.
Colour Therapy is so vast and expansive. Once you become familiar with the colours and their properties you will find endless ways to use colour in your everyday life!
The color BLUE allows you to feel empowered to speak from the place of truth that resides inside of you. In an emotionally charged situation it is sometimes difficult to speak - we are experiencing so much emotionally it is hard to physically “get it out there,” or we become concerned about how another may take our words. This is where blue can assist you the most. By wearing a blue scarf on a day when you plan to speak to someone about an emotional situation, you are allowing this frequency to assist you, to support you and to help keep your integrity.
The Path to Enlightenment © Janice Blaine
In the Dinshah method of Colour Therapy, we use a colour wheel that contains the 12 colours used for healing. The colour wheel is made up of three sections (ultra green, circulatory/reproductive/ emotional colours and infra green); they have no marked beginning or end.
INDIGO! Although darker in colour it contains a huge amount of vibrancy. Indigo is the colour of the night sky. Within this frequency mysteries of the universe can be discovered. Indigo allows for expansion; seeing the world through indigo can help you to see outside of the monotony of everyday life. It assists you to see deeper, to look beyond the surface and to discover the Milky Way. As the colour of the night sky it is also a great aid to insomnia, sleeping disorders and can even help one to remember their dreams more precisely! Another awesome use for indigo is for migraines! VIOLET is such a soft colour. Where indigo is bold and pronounced, violet is contemplating and nurturing. Within this frequency is unconditional love, and guidance. Creativity has no boundaries; true self expression is unrestrained and free from societal pressures. The frequency of violet is often tapped into by artists when they are creating new work.
Colours have physical, emotional and spiritual properties. In this article we will explore the frequencies of the ultra green colors, focusing on one property per colour. TURQUOISE is the ultimate healing colour. It combines the frequencies of green and blue. From turquoise we receive the frequencies of life. Green and blue are the two most predominant colours on our planet. Most plants are green or have a component of green (think of leaves on plants). Most fruit and vegetable plants are green, have green foliage and their produce are also green before ripening into other colours. Blue is in our environment through water, thus the sky and our air. We literally breathe blue!
Colour has opened up my world and continues to expand my horizons in my life and in my sessions. In the next issue I will discuss the sauciest colours of the wheel! Turquoise is the first colour to use for anything related to skin. For instance if you have spent too much time in the sun, as soon as possible tonate (a colour treatment where the true colour is used with a lamp and shone onto the body) with turquoise to help relieve your sunburn. Psoriasis, eczema and general dryness of skin can be brought into balance through the use of turquoise. From tonations to lotions, turquoise can help! Aloe Vera is a

Biotec Dental’s new home at Roots When we moved to Sherwood Park eight years ago, it was to put down ‘new roots’. We first had a thriving dental practice in California, where the major focus was providing clients with ‘beautiful’ teeth. It was very lucrative but this kind of dental work didn’t feed our souls. We wanted to make a real difference and that desire led us to the Canadian Arctic. Bringing dentistry into remote indigenous settlements throughout Canada’s Arctic for the next 25 years was an adventure to remember but it definitely left significant scars. Beyond the immediate relief of pain and infection for our new dental patients, the prime purpose for my wife Laurena and I was to introduce disease prevention and health education programs to the underserved in these isolated communities. We spent many long hours providing extensive dental work there and only later did the damage from exposure to mercury (from all of the dental amalgam fillings we placed) become evident. In fact, the exposure was so severe that Laurena can no longer practice dentistry. Her heavy-metal body-burden levels are in the extreme range, resulting in a serious case of chemical sensitivity. Recognizing that good often comes from a negative experience, our new focus became finding better ways to provide safe dental services. Fortunately, as we were able to study complimentary medicine, biological dentistry and natural healing modalities, a more positive approach emerged to our dental treatment philosophy. Moreover, dentistry’s timely evolution into the computer and digital age occurred concurrently with our new direction. Finally, biocompatible alternatives to traditional dental materials and protocols came of age along with advanced technological support.
The development of Organic Roots on Whyte, a new and innovative health services building on 82 Avenue and 102 Street, is a culmination of a broad spectrum of health minded forces. The stated goal of the locally owned three storey centre is to: “bring healthy and health related choices to consumers through a wide range of health disciplines and retail stores…” This one-stop-shop for Edmonton’s health minded patrons, will also offer a large conference centre for educational programs and workshops. With the recent rebranding of our dental practice (Casa De Luz) to our new company name, Biotec Dental Group, we are very excited to announce that our new home will be at Roots on Whyte. Biocompatible, technological and ecological in focus, the newly formed Biotec Dental Group is today’s positive outcome from lessons learned the hard way. by Dr. Terry Clark Holistic Dentist
Biotec is also fortunate to welcome Dr. Jackie Korol to our practice. She comes highly recommended with extensive training in high tech dentistry and is committed to the Biotec philosophy of ‘do no harm’. From the onset of our journey, we consistently believed in prevention and education. Today we have the advantage of hindsight, advanced technology and the benefit of fabulous new dental materials. Our focus on ‘standard of care’ basics remains true. The advances of a new age allow for improvement and a community centered home in Roots brings it all together. Once again, we are setting down ‘new roots’.
Health focused dentistry, with whole body consideration for the purpose of ‘doing no harm’, is becoming a reality. Terry and Laurena have an extensive background in teaching and studying at numerous advanced international holistic institutes. Visit www.biotecdental.ca or call 780-922-6875. Note: This information is for educational purposes only. It is intended to supplement your current health program, not to replace the care of a licensed medical doctor.
At this same time, Laurena created a whole body nutritional support program to help our clients learn about nutrition and how this supports their bodies and teeth. The unique combination of ‘nutrition for health’ provided by Laurena’s Kitchen and our high-tech biocompatible dentistry provided our clients with a whole-body-treatment experience. As we were developing our healthier dental options and nutritional programs, other health modalities were also evolving, resulting in a growing community of like-minded alternative and complimentary practitioners.

Esoteric Explorations
Now is the time to forgive and move on by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist I was having a conversation with someone the other day and he was telling me about how one of his siblings was a liar.
It reminded me of when politicians are campaigning and someone will alert the media to the fact that one of them drank or smoked pot in college. My first thought always is: “Okay, but do they still?” I wondered in the case of the ‘lying’ sibling whether the choices she made in her life were impacted, in a limiting way, by underlying shame or guilt.
November © Oksana Zhelisko — www.zheliskoart.com
After a few moments I realized that he was talking about events that took place when the two of them were children (both are now currently in their 40’s).
I asked him if his sister still behaved that way and in an unforgiving manner he replied: “No, but that is only because she might get caught.” I then asked him if it was possible that his sister had changed and grown, and his reply was an emphatic: “No.”

It is impossible to live your life and not make errors in judgment due to a sense of lack, immaturity or inexperience. Unfortunately sometimes we make mistakes and hurt ourselves and others. What allows us to grow and move forward is reflecting back on situations that went awry, questioning what we learned from them and contemplating how we could handle a similar situation differently in the future. Honest self reflection allows us to digest our experiences, time for emotional release and the opportunity to grow in discernment, wisdom and even a little bit of humility. When we don’t forgive ourselves (or others) for our imperfections and mistakes, we often become paralyzed by unresolved emotions, guilt or shame which inhibits future growth. Our mind and creativity becomes bound up and restricted when our nasty inner (sometimes outer) critic insists on past, present and future perfection. This month clean out your inner house - take an imaginary broom and sweep old guilt and shame out the door. Make a commitment to learn from past successes and failures and welcome new experiences into your life. Thank you to the gentleman in the above story who allowed me to use his experience as part of this article. An Astrologer since 1986, Catherine is also a Hypnotherapist and Meditation Instructor. Skye’s View
This dreamer’s journey to soul Even as a child I knew the power of the dream. I loved sitting at the kitchen table for breakfast, a time of sharing dreams from the night before. Dreams spoke to me in a way that the mundane world never could. It was a natural progression for me to explore various approaches to dreams, always seeking the path that would open the portal to the land that I visited each night. With the exception of dream dictionaries (which I intuitively knew to be useless), I read everything that I could find on dreams. I even became certified as a Dream Therapist at the Delaney Flowers Dream Institute in California, a process involving years of study. And when I had achieved this huge goal, still, I knew that I hadn’t found what I was looking for. In frustration I called out to Spirit to show me what I was searching for. That day I found the book: The History of Last Night’s Dream by Rodger Kamenetz (HarperCollins, 2007). When I read this book, I knew that my call to Spirit had been answered. In this book Kamenetz relays how his dream work with Marc Bregman changed his life. The North of Eden Archetypal Dream Institute was founded 38 years ago by Marc Bregman. Marc has an ability to hear the deeper intention of the dream. He asks a few simple questions and suddenly our carefully constructed lives are revealed as nothing more than smoke and mirrors. Ultimately, Marc knows how to hear the message that our soul is so desperately waiting to deliver through our dreams and even a very simple dream can rock our world when we listen from our soul’s knowing.
honoured to witness the transformation that unfolds one dream at a time. Recently I went on a personal pilgrimage to an Archetypal Dream Retreat held at a castle along the foothills of the Pyrenees in France. The experience was very powerful for me and brought me to a place of reflecting upon how this work has changed me. In the past, the most important thing in my life was to feel safe, even at the expense of being my authentic self. I’m learning that I don’t need to have all of the answers. I can let my life unfold; I can let Spirit teach me. With each dream, I feel another layer of illusion peeling away and the light of soul shines through more brightly. In The History of Last Night’s Dream, Kamenetz speaks about the three gifts that our dreams bring. “The first gift: dreams reveal through powerful images and dramatic situations your predicament in life - where you are blocked, stuck, lost without even knowing it. You have to learn what causes your predicament and overcome it. Then, deeper down, comes the second gift. You have a powerful dream where you glimpse the situation of your soul. As for the third gift, a whole sleeping world awakens for you that you carry with you always. It is the world of the soul and its encounters with the divine.” Dreamtime - Horse © Carol Pylypow

Living ‘off the grid’ and loving it not first love yourself? Until I learned to love myself I was not able to love anybody else and that was why my relationships with my wife, children, family and friends failed miserably. Since those days back in 2001 my life has flipped completely around. I was able to work on my relationship with my wife Carey and reconcile a three year separation. That took a lot of hard work, painful memories and many tears. However, I learned so much about myself through the process that I would do again if I had to. Since then, my strong relationship with my family has provided me with the foundation to extend this work into other areas of my life. Over the past five years we decided that rather than complaining about all the problems of the world, we would actually do something about it. After all, I cannot change anybody but myself, so no sense trying. In 2007 we sold everything. I quit a 20 year career in Information Technology and we moved our family out into the country near Athabasca, Alberta and started to build a whole new lifestyle. We built an off grid, passive solar heated, earth rammed home called an ‘earthship’ (www.earthship.org) which allows us to generate our own power (solar and wind), collect our own water, treat our own waste and heat our home with the sun and wood we harvest from our land. by ‘rob in the pagé family’ Life is about relationships. This was a lesson that I had to learn the hard way. For 30 years I struggled with depression and when I went through the darkest days of my life I found myself mired in drugs, suicide attempts, a broken marriage and no friends. I got to the point where I decided that it was time to change or die. At that point I had the opportunity to join a unique therapy group out of the U of A Hospital where I went through intensive group therapy, full time for 18 weeks, and it changed my life. I carry with me now many key lessons I learned through that experience and one of them is knowing that my relationship with myself is critically important. After all, how can you love your neighbor as yourself, if you do ILoveMosaicMagazine.com
An earthship is a radically sustainable home made of recycled materials (www.earthship.org). Earthships really resonated with us as Michael Reynolds worked for 40 years to ensure that the design resulted in a structure that was eco-friendly and could realistically be sustained off grid for long periods of time. The design was beautiful. We also started raising our own food (chickens, goats, bees and planting gardens). Life is all about relationships, so why not look at my relationship with my food, environment, ecology, corporations, government and most importantly, my creator! Unplugging from the grid to live ‘off grid’ meant more than just electricity. We decided to unplug from as many ‘grids’ as possible and the earthship was a key component to that strategy. Power, gas, water and sewage were all basic parts Winter 2011 — Mosaic Magazine

of the design, but we also extended this to include food, medical, banking, corporate, government, etc. Making that decision to be 100% responsible for everything was intense and stressful. It was like leaving home for the very first time when you are a teenager or going to school for the very first time when you are 6 years old. The anxiety, stress and learning curve was immense. However, like those other experiences we found that once we got into it, learned new skills and realized that ‘yes’ we can do this, the stress went away.
and that’s why the farmers must resort to fertilizer and other chemicals to compensate. Well that did not resonate with me at all, especially as I’m working on having a healthy relationship with my environment. So I realized that the cycle had to be closed and somehow those nutrients must be returned to the land. Rather than flushing the toilet, we decided to compost everything. We also started programs to have people send us their compost so that we could start returning the minerals and nutrients back to the land in order to sustain the food production process.
We successfully increased the size of our comfort zone despite the challenges we had. In the early days we decided to grow turkeys and the first year we found that they started to die on us. Trying to solve that problem was challenging and when my brother-in-law clued us into mineral deficiency issues, we fixed the problem and found that it pointed us in the direction of an even bigger one! Turns out our current food system has a fundamental flaw. When a farmer grows food, the minerals from the ground are taken up by the plants and animals and shipped off to be process and packaged. That food then goes to the city where it is consumed and flushed down the toilet. From there we should all be aware that it then heads out to sea. So over time the soil becomes nutrient deficient

Turns out that our approach to food production results in the best tasting eggs, honey, milk, chicken and turkeys you will ever find. I even have friends who do blind taste tests with eggs from the store and even farmers markets but our eggs win every time! However, you will not find us at any farmers markets as we sell all our produce privately and within the framework of my sovereignty.
We don’t ‘need’ a lot of money as we don’t have a lot of bills. However, I do teach and perform other tasks outside of our domicile so that we can work on finishing the house and other improvements to our place. We don’t have a bank account or any loans so we must work first before we can purchase anything that we need or want. Living off grid has its challenges. Being responsible for everything means that I am the electrician, plumber, carpenter, farmer, gardener, snow removal, waste removal, butcher, mechanic and any other trade or occupation you can think of. It was impossible for me to do this all alone and I am very fortunate to have friends and neighbors nearby who can help. On the flip side though, I also spend time at their places helping them too. Sometimes the phone call comes at the last minute, but not having a full time job means that I also have the flexibility to drop what I am doing to go help. There is a lot of give and take out here. Country living is much different than city living as out here you depend on your neighbors. So everyone here spends time building relationships with their neighbors, which requires spending time with one another. Help from 911 out here

So what is it like living off all these grids? Well a typical day would involve us getting up, eating breakfast and heading out to do chores. We milk three goats and feed about 450 chickens. At that point we sit down and figure out what we want to do. Nether of us have a full time job, so our time is rather flexible. If it’s a sunny day, then we have lots of power which allows us to do laundry and construction as our system can accommodate the load. If it is cloudy then we work on other things that don’t require power. Living with the ebb and flow of nature has been a big change but once we made that transition it actually works out rather well.
could be three days away if there is a blizzard outside. I know more of my neighbors now than I did when I lived in St. Albert. I had a revelation this summer when we were nearly finished building my mother-in-laws house; if push came to shove, I could build a home from the ground up. Given the financial crises at play in the world, the experiences that I’ve had over the past five years are more valuable and relevant than any experiences I learned in the 25 years before this. Now I know that it doesn’t matter what happens ‘out there’ because my family and I will be okay. We can provide for ourselves if the trucks stop delivering food to the grocery stores. We have lights even if the power grid shuts down. We have water for months and months even if the pumps stop turning and we don’t need the banks either. Our biggest surprise is the sense of peace and security we got from doing all this work, knowing that we Winter 2011 — Mosaic Magazine

have learned so much that even if we lost it all, we could build it again. As a result of all our experiences I decided that it’s my duty to reach out to other people and start teaching what we have learned. So on October 1, 2011, Ben Stewart and I released a film called UNGRIP, a documentary of my work and the steps I took to govern myself and let go of the destructive life style I was leading before. You can find UNGRIP on YouTube for free or you can purchase a copy at www.hangedmanproject.com. Ben Stewart also has two very popular films called Esoteric Agenda and the award winning Kymatica which can also be found on YouTube or purchased at the same site. I decided to launch a website called www.ConsciousSelfGovernance.ca in order to share my story and help other people learn what it takes to let go (ungrip) our current life style, to learn how to govern themselves and build healthy meaningful relationships with themselves, their creator, food, environment, etc. I’ve also started a project with other community members to build an off grid greenhouse that can grow food all year around. Doing that in northern Alberta, where winters can reach -40 degree Celsius, is a challenge. However, using rammed earth technology similar to the concept of the earthship, I believe we can achieve this. We
are breaking ground on the prototype within weeks and will test it this winter. When we work out all the bugs, we will release the plans for free on-line and work with community groups all over the country to build these greenhouses all over the place. Our intent is to help people remove their dependency from the corporate food system, working towards closing the nutrient cycle and to grow healthy, organic food all year round without any middle man. Everyone should have access to cheap, healthy food, no matter where they live and I believe this is one tool we can use to achieve that. I found that the middle man takes about 95% of the cost of the food which means the farmer only gets 5%. Removing the middle man will result in much cheaper food for the consumer and more revenue for the producer. An even better scenario is to have the consumer be the producer at which point the food is free. If you want to learn more about all these ideas or want to keep in touch regarding the greenhouse project and other community initiatives, please visit www.ConsciousSelfGovernance.ca and sign up for our newsletter where all these topics and more are discussed.

Artist’s Gallery
Paintings that blend music and art by Phil Alain
On November 18 and 19, I celebrate my 15th year of creating art and music events across Canada with the annual event Night of Artists. When you look at my current style of work you will see that what inspires me in my most recent works is what I have been creating for the past 15 years through Night of Artists.
Take This Waltz © Phil Alain
My art style attempts to reflect the mood and atmosphere of music through art. Because I could not play an instrument but loved music, I did my best to try to capture what music could look like. Thus the blend of art and music through my paintings not only represents a passion for both art and music but also reflects what I try to create through my art festival, Night of Artists.
Big Daddy © Phil Alain
Art has always been a voice of where I am in my life. Since the time I began seriously painting at the age of 13, my art style and subject matter has changed multiple times and in looking back you can see exactly where I was in my life through what I had created. Art can be much like the rings of a tree when looking deeper into an artist’s career.
Art has been a beacon in my life in so many ways and daily I am blessed with the ability to create on many levels. Not only do I get to create my own artworks, I also create with hundreds of artists from around the world through a project called Mural Mosaic. These murals have garnered international attention and are a great source of pride for myself, Lewis Lavoie and Paul Lavoie as the project spreads a strong message of unity through diversity in art.

(Italian) With heart and soul
I’d of had to miss the dance It was suppose to be fun. Or that’s what I always thought it would be like. I remember being very envious of my cousin, Valerie, for being able to go to ballet dance classes when we were just kids. She was perfect in her little pink dance tights, tutu and ballet shoes. I use to wish that I could go to those dance classes too and be one of ‘those’ girls. Many years later when my daughter Gabrielle was three, I enrolled her in dance classes and she’s been in dance ever since. She loves to dance and I love to watch her dance. Sometimes, when I watch her, I still wonder what it would be like to dance myself. So when I got an email about an adult jazz class here, I was quite excited and a little scared. At 48, I’ve never taken a professional dance class, and although I was interested in the exercise part of it, part of me felt like that little girl in me would finally get to dance. Days later I walked into the dance studio and nervously joined nine other women in the class. After a few stretches, we did some simple dance steps and I mastered those easily. But then it quickly got more complicated and I began to panic. While all the steps were so easy for the other ladies, I just could not keep up. As the minutes passed, my anxiety grew. Over half way through the class, I went to a corner and decided to watch to try memorize the steps as I was just getting in their way. But, every few minutes, a new step was added and before long, all of these women knew a complete dance routine to one song! The end of this class could not come soon enough for me. I felt like I was in grade 1, the stupid kid in the corner. Finally, it was over. I walked over to the instructor and began to tell her that I would need to pull out of the class as it was way over my level, when (*damn-it!*) the tears involuntarily started streaming down my face. The other women were still there and I was trying so hard to act 48, but emotionally I was just a little girl inside. Not only could I not dance like the rest of them, I also couldn’t control the overwhelming feelings I was having.
experience and this was NOT a beginners dance class. She was trying to make me feel better but something bigger had been triggered for me - that feeling of shame that I was somehow not quite good enough. It’s such an old feeling, this murky shadow that sometimes still pops up out of nowhere and clouds my way. I drove home, sobbing. It was like a flood gate had opened up - like every memory I’d ever had about not feeling good enough had converged into this one moment. I was even surprised myself at how emotional I was.

When Gabrielle greeted me to see how my dance class had gone, she saw my face and knew. My eyes were red and swollen and I wept again in embarrassment as I told her what occurred in my first dance class.
Then the most wonderful thing happened that I did not expect. She came over and held me. She told me that everything was okay, that she loved me and that she was proud of me - over and over, with a pureness and intensity that I actually felt enter into me. An amazing peace came over me and then I was struck by a profound realization that here was my daughter doing something for me that I could not recall my mother ever doing. I know my Mom loved me but facing emotions (hers or mine) was very difficult for her and she would just automatically ‘shut down’. Consequently my daughter’s spontaneous comforting was emotional bliss for me. So halleluiah, honestly, for that dance class because my 11year-old daughter healed some old wounded part of me that night. And that was worth that dance class and every other ‘dance’ I’ve ever done where I didn’t feel good enough. There’s that Garth Brooke’s song that says: “I could have missed the pain but I’d of had to miss the dance.” It was one of the songs we had at my brother Gene’s funeral. I love that song. It reminds me that pain and joy are both part of the package, sometimes bittersweet, but often creating incredible moments that change us forever. I have had many dances in my life, but the dance I have with my daughter is the one that continues to both stretch and heal me… She is the greatest dancer and teacher I’ve ever had.
The dance instructor was wonderful (bless her) and said that the other ladies had even surprised her with their dance
