I Love Mosaic fact, I can think of a few book club dinners, where it was my conversations with the other guests (and not the book) that helped change my life. For instance, at one recent book club dinner, many of the other mothers and I talked about bullying in our schools, our kid’s experiences, and what we can do to support them. What I learned that night was invaluable to me and I don’t think I would have had the same insights/guidance if it were not for the conversations I had with these other amazing mothers at my book club. I can’t even remember what the book was - but I won’t ever forget what I learned from these other women. That’s the power/blessing of being with other ‘likeminded’ people. Spirit provides us with the perfect opportunities and people when we need guidance.
www.L3photo.com
But I don’t want to downplay the importance of reading the book either. Whether I love the book or hate it, I’m thankful that the book club has me reading and expanding my world. I always get something from the book we read - sometimes it’s a small gem and other times it’s an amazing treasure (like the Robert Schwartz book I recently featured).
by Connie Brisson Mosaic has gone through layers and layers of evolution since I became the editor/publisher in 2004. I’m always striving to improve it. I started the Mosaic Book Club Dinner in May 2008 when Youmashni Naidoo encouraged me to form some type of ‘get together’ for like-minded people who love the type of information that Mosaic is all about. I didn’t want to do the usual networking things where you and I meet up to talk about ‘what we do and why we do it’, as I think Mosaic is already a clear advocate on the importance of holistic health and personal transformation. So instead, I wanted to do something different - tasty, fun and informal. Because I love to eat and try out new restaurants, dinner in different restaurants seemed like the perfect choice. And, as I also love learning new things too, I thought: “Why not a book club dinner?” as it’s impossible to read a book and not get one jewel of insight from it. For me, the goal has always just been to host an informal occasion where like-minded people can come together, eat, talk, laugh and share who we are. It’s never been about an extensive review of the book. Indeed, some people who often come to the dinner have never read one single book club dinner pick.
I’ve also met some of the most wonderful new friends at the book club dinners that I may have never met anywhere else. I’ve instantly clicked and bonded with some of them, like old souls at a class reunion. Some are so familiar to me, that I feel like I’ve known them for many lifetimes. At our last book club dinner at Noorish, I again met some wonderful new people, including two amazing women from Red Deer. It was truly serendipitous because one of these ladies was Delaney Hansen - and through an unexpected unfolding of fate, she is going to be the new host of the Mosaic Book Club Dinners in Red Deer (on the same night we hold them here in Edmonton). I’m so excited about this! It isn’t only about the book, it isn’t only about the restaurant/food - it’s also about like-minded people getting together to enjoy and learn from one another. It’s about community. And the more communities, the better! The next book club dinner will be on Wednesday, December 5th at 6:00 p.m. The Edmonton book club dinner is going to be at Guru Restaurant, 17021 - 100 Avenue, Edmonton. Please email me at mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca by December 4th if you can come. We're reading The Way by Kristen Wolf (Crown Publishers, 2011). The Red Deer book club dinner will be at West Lake Grill, Heritage Park Ranch, Red Deer. Please call Delaney at 403896-4666 by December 4th if you can attend. You can’t be attracted to this way of life and not personally grow. So I couldn’t be more pleased that our book clubs are growing too! If you’re drawn to come, we’d love to see you at one soon.
Instead, the dinners are primarily about people coming together to meet new people and talk about our lives, our work/passions, ask questions and learn from each other. In

The greatest gift you can give “The greatest gift you can give to somebody is your own personal development. I used to say: ‘If you will take care of me, I will take care of you.’ Now I say: ‘I will take care of me for you, if you will take care of you for me’.” Jim Rohn Every one of us is suffering with emotional pain on some level and when we refuse to deal with it, we eventually suffer the consequences. However, these consequences don’t just affect us - they affect every single person around us, especially our loved ones. When we refuse to take care of ourselves or take responsibility for our own happiness (or lack of it), the ripple effect is huge! Sometimes we assume that others should be taking care of us. We place blame or expectations on our loved ones. We think that if others would change, then we would be happy. All of these beliefs place us in victim mode and paralyze us because we think there is nothing we can do to change our circumstances. Desperate for solutions, we look for ways to make ourselves ‘feel’ better. We buy more clothes and shoes, fill our bodies with botox or silicone, drink excessively, eat compulsively; we may even go as far as to leave our marriage or think that dropping 20 pounds will do the trick. And that’s exactly what these all are… a great big trick!
Course in Weightloss, Hayhouse 2010): “There is a difference between seeing an issue and surrendering it. It is not enough to just see our issues; in order to activate spiritual power, we must place them in God’s hands. It is not enough to merely identify your pain; the miracle comes when you pray that it be taken away.” Once you have established a relationship with your Higher Power (whatever that may be for you), you can then ask for guidance for the right expert, therapy, workshop, etc., to help you. Trust your intuition and go with whatever you are really drawn to.

Working through our problems will feel scary and uncomfortable at first. We may feel tempted to take an escape route. All of these feelings are completely normal and, in spite of them, we need to summon our courage. As our problems present themselves, we can surely trust that it is because we are ready to deal with them and that all the tools and people we need to help us are available right now. What has been weighing heavily on you? What are you currently doing to change the issue? What is the most difficult or scary part about this? What are the likely consequences if you don’t deal with this? How will these consequences affect your life and your loved ones?
If you are struggling with a problem right now, know that by dealing with it sooner than later, you are indeed giving your loved ones the greatest gift you can give. All of these so-called solutions can appear to resolve our problems but they only do so temporarily. These solutions are merely band-aids, quick fixes, illusions and frankly, I think of them as the really hard way because at the end of the day, our problems will still be there to greet us, and everyone we love is still left paying the price. The first step to solving a problem is to admit there is a problem and acknowledge that our lives are being negatively affected by it. The very next thing we need to do is create a relationship with our Higher Power. Marianne Williamson said (A

Photo placement in Feng Shui Every home and most offices have photos of family and friends. Because photos duplicate the energy of an individual at a specific moment in time, it’s extremely important that the energy being radiated from the photo represents the best of who we are. When photos are taken at auspicious times and placed appropriately in the home, this attracts good fortune into one’s life. There are several very negative locations in the home and office for photo placement. Never place photos facing the front entrance, facing a garage entrance within the home, the bathroom door or a staircase. As well, do not place photos within a bathroom, on the side walls of a staircase, in the garage or in the basement. If a photo is placed facing the front entrance or garage entrance, your family will constantly be on the go, or even worse, the family could break up and leave the home entirely. When photos are hung facing a bathroom door or in the bathroom, those in the photo are likely to have a negative attitude and get ill more easily. Hanging photos facing or within a staircase causes ups and downs in the lives of those in the photo. This might manifest emotionally, financially or physically - the instability usually impacts the most vulnerable area of those in the photo. Hanging photos in the basement can add to depression and generally makes life more difficult; goals are harder to achieve.
photos. This weakens the life force of those who are still living. It’s great to honor your loved ones who have died; just place their photos in a separate area of the room. If possible, hang the pictures of those who have died on a wall and place the photos of those living standing on a piece of furniture. Photos should make the people who are in the photo feel good about themselves when they look at the photo. If you cringe when you see yourself in the family portrait, then it’s time to get a new picture taken. Choose an excellent photographer who has the ability to evoke happiness and laughter as the photo is being taken. This joy will bring family harmony and attract good luck to all in the photo. Avoid taking photos when someone is ill or unhappy or if it’s a challenging year for you in Chinese Astrology. For example, currently we are in the Year of the Dragon; people born in the Year of the Dog should avoid having photos taken this year. Photos that are tucked away in albums don’t have the same power as those we see over and over again in our homes. Still, it’s good to weed out those photos that evoke unpleasant memories.
Have fun exploring the power of a properly placed photo and may your life be blessed with good fortune. For those of you who enjoy coming to my annual Chinese New Year’s talk, this year we’ll celebrate the Year of the Snake on Monday evening February 11th. Maybe I’ll see you there! It’s very uncommon to see photos placed on the floor and that’s a good thing. When photos are placed on the floor this is an insult to the person in the photo and attracts disharmony (and sometimes violence) into the lives of those in the photo. The following rooms are the most auspicious for photo placements: living room, family room, sitting room and other areas where groups of people gather to enjoy one another’s company. Never display photos of the living and those who have died in the same photo, or even the same collection of ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

Co-creative divorce by Deanna Koebernick Collaborative Family Lawyer & Mediator Divorce is a time of transition. It’s a time of undoing and a time of creation. Whatever the reason, the couple in divorce has decided to end their marriage contract. The divorce process is the bridge from a place of being husband and wife to a new place that has not yet been defined. The blank wall in my mediation room is the canvas on which the old life is unraveled and a new life begins to take shape.
With the children as the focal point, the parents then create the rest of the picture that they will all inhabit. Research shows that it is not the divorce itself that harms children, but rather how the parents conduct themselves during the divorce. The parents hold the power to create their children’s reality. The only concept of family that the children may have had is one where both parents live together in one home. With the decision to end their marriage, the concept of family that once existed also ends. The parents now hold the brushes and the paints in their hands and together they create and define a new image of family. Will this new picture meet the children’s needs to be loved, to belong and feel valued?
Before we immerse ourselves in the task of unraveling the marriage, it is imperative to look forward and imagine the future that is being created. I find it helpful to focus on the destination. Not just the destination of divorce, but beyond that.
My Family is Love © Monica Castro — www.monicacastroart.com
All of my clients will say that that they imagine a future in which their children have loving relationships with both parents. In creating this vision for the future, I ask the question: “If your children were to come into this room 10 years from now and I were to interview them and ask them what they remembered most about the time their parents divorced, what is it that you would hope they would say?” The children now occupy the central place on the empty canvas (that represents the future of this family) and become the anchor for all subsequent discussion in the room. If what they hope for their children’s future is true, then how do they get there? How do they now deal with the present reality of dividing assets and determining financial support for children? What kind of parenting plan will they create that will achieve this shared vision? How will they conduct themselves both inside the meeting room and most importantly in the presence of their children?
8
Mosaic Magazine — Winter 2012
It seems ironic that at the time the couple is deciding to separate and divorce that they must now cooperate with each other so they can both reach their destination. With this mindset, they co-create the new image of their children’s future and their own future.

My role as the mediator is to remind the clients what is at stake if they cannot resolve their conflict. I assist them in looking at the conflict from a different perspective, taking them up to the balcony so they can see things from a new vantage point. I help them focus on their vision for their future, only delving into the past as necessary to resolve an issue in the present. Clients choosing mediation or collaborative divorce do so because they desire to end their marriage and shape their future in a manner that is respectful to each other and their children. They seek to preserve the parenting relationship and their assets rather than walk a path of destruction. It is useful to consider all of the various paths available before choosing the one that will work best for you. The three most common paths taken are mediation, collaborative divorce or litigation. The traditional approach to divorce is the litigation path where each spouse retains their own lawyer and their issues are resolved either by way of the lawyers negotiating a settlement or though court applications or a trial. All documents filed in court become a matter of public record. If the issues are resolved in court, the clients have no control over the decision-making and the judge imposes a decision on them. In collaborative divorce, each spouse retains their own collaborative lawyer and then signs an agreement that states they will not use the courts to resolve their issues. If at any time either spouse wants to go to court, then the agreement terminates and each spouse must find new lawyers to represent them in court. All meetings occur face to face with both lawyers and both clients.
In my first year of law school, one of my professors said that an action started in court is like declaring an act of war in which no one wins. I have witnessed this many times in long, drawn-out court battles over property and children that left families financially and emotionally devastated. And this is why I am committed to providing a more respectful, productive alternative through collaborative family law and mediation. I believe that everyone has the innate ability to create their own solutions given the right information and guidance. I also believe that moments of conflict offer an opportunity to increase understanding and bring about positive change. And, as the mother of a young child, I am passionate about resolving conflict in a way that prioritizes the needs and interests of children. As a result, my priority is to support my clients in creating solutions unique to their needs as individuals and as a family. As a lawyer and mediator, I address the whole picture (including legal, financial, relational and emotional aspects of each situation) to obtain the best possible outcome. Together, we resolve issues creatively and cooperatively. Deanna is a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator at Sage Law and Mediation. Her practice is focused on Collaborative Divorce, Divorce Mediation and Elder and Estate Mediation. You can contact her at: 780-983-3494, Deanna@sagelawandmediation.com or www.sagelawandmediation.com
With both mediation and collaborative divorce, all meetings are private and confidential and occur in an informal setting. The focus is on cooperative resolution of issues with a view to the future. If additional expertise is required such as financial experts, child specialists or divorce coaches, they are jointly agreed upon and brought into the process. The clients determine the timing of their meetings and make their own decisions. With mediation, the couple agrees on a neutral third party that will facilitate the dialogue that they are unable to have on their own. Once resolution of all issues is reached, the mediator prepares a report that the clients take to their lawyers to have drafted into a legally binding contract. A friend of mine created the word crisitunity - a blending of the words ‘crisis’ and ‘opportunity’. Divorce can be a time of crisis and simultaneously a doorway into opportunity. The reality that once existed has been shattered and in that space exists the opportunity to create something different. What is the picture that you wish to create for yourself? And for your children? What does that look like? How will you get there? What will you teach your children about dealing with crisis? And opportunity?

“Two and a half years ago I lost my partner, tragically to say the least. I am in a quandary as to whether I should move back to my old home town in Manitoba or continue to live where I am. I’m wondering if I would be happier (living closer to more relatives, school friends and people from my past) than where I currently residing. I would welcome a companion and travel buddy but wonder what I need to do to start a new life.” JP, Edmonton by Marlene Chapman Mystic You are a 7 Life Path in a 3 Personal Year. What an exciting period of reinvention for you! For now, I encourage you to put yourself first and discover what you require to be happy. Take all opportunities to get involved with like-minded people, especially concerning community, creativity or spirituality. New or previously abandoned interests and activities will soon replace roles and responsibilities that no longer fit. As a 7 Expression, you probably feel the need to belong, to be a part of something bigger than just yourself. This is likely influencing your desire to return to Manitoba. Your first name Expression is 22/4, which carries a tendency to put your own needs on the back burner and lose yourself in service to others. I encourage you to hold off on this move until you have clearly redefined yourself. Regardless, a challenge involving a female relative will arise to help you see how you contribute to this pattern. My advice is to stay where you are for now. Currently, your natural psychic ability is at its peak and stillness is required to hear it. Your gut is more reliable than your head in guiding you to fulfillment. A new path will be revealed through a special friendship or romance that begins within the next three years. by T.J. Wallingford Tarot Consultant The pain of losing a loved one often forces us to re-evaluate our own life and learn from the tragedy of the experience. Moving to Manitoba brings with it a fresh zest for life as well as the support you desire (4 of Wands). Be aware that some people may judge or attempt to impose their will (5 of Wands). You are likely to find yourself in a position of having to instill and defend boundaries (Emperor). The sooner you’re able to recognize the different ways your boundaries are being breached and start addressing it, the sooner you will be able to embrace your new path and the new awareness (10 of Wands) of the dynamics at play in your relationships. Staying in Alberta is likely to feel more balanced for a while (Balance) but the scale will soon shift and your experience will change (8 of Pentacles). You are again being put in a position of having to defend boundaries (Knight of Pentacles) which is likely to be more emotionally draining without the support of friends and family, and in time you may feel stuck and stagnant (8 of Cups). I’m not sure why, but I sometimes struggle with being depressed (but not because something really ‘big’ or ‘bad’ is happening to me to cause the depression). I don’t want to take a ‘pill’ as the depression isn’t consistent. When it does happen, is there something I can do from a more holistic perspective to help myself? D.M., Edmonton by Tammie Quick Doctor of Homeopathy and Heilkunst One thing we never hear is that feeling sad now and then is a completely normal part of being human. Clever marketing campaigns for anti-depressant medications make us think that we're supposed to feel great all of the time. We’re not. As life is filled with ups and downs, so too, will your emotions be. Sometimes ‘normal’ can get out of balance however. And of course, there may have been an event somewhere in your life that has set you up to get ‘depressed’ every time you have a similar experience. Even something like losing your beloved pet in childhood, could give you a life-long grief/sadness disease state. by Kristin Fraser Registered Holistic Nutritionist Depression is a topic that is near and dear to my heart as it is what personally led me to holistic nutrition in the first place years ago. From a nutrition standpoint it’s important to avoid things like sugar (including maple syrup and honey), milk products and processed foods according to AnnMarie Colbin’s Food and Healing (Ballantine Books, 1986). Even fatty fried foods have been known to trigger symptoms of sorrow. Time for self-care is also important. Reflexology can encourage the release of endorphins within the body. Endorphins are the ‘feel good’ chemical that we naturally produce and are known for relieving stress (which can have a big impact on depression). Depression is something that can affect your whole body. It affects your nervous system, changes your mood and influences your reactions to certain events or situations.
People experience different sensations when receiving reflexology but generally everybody finds it relaxing - and relaxation plays a major part in overcoming depression.
A reflexologist will focus on specific points to alleviate depression. Within the body there are glands that regulate our emotions and mental well-being. When someone is suffering with depression, these glands are usually not functioning correctly. The glands that a reflexologist will target to relieve depression are the pituitary, thymus, pineal, thyroid and parathyroid. Helping others with what healed me My healing journey began 12 years ago when one of my best friends was murdered. Her death, and the way she died, really messed me up. I began getting extreme anxiety attacks and was in constant panic and fear mode. To cope, I saw a doctor who prescribed some heavy doses of antidepressants. However, the medication left me feeling monotone. I began praying for a better solution when the word ‘Reiki’ started to shine a little brighter to me. I found a class, but was not financially stable. So I prayed that if it were meant to be, it would happen, and the money appeared as if by magic! I began practicing Reiki on myself immediately and soon went off my medications. I started feeling more and more alive than I’d ever felt before. Over time the Reiki seemed to heighten my senses in all ways, and because of this, I started ‘feeling’ everybody and everything. I had no way of controlling this and no one to talk about it. I started asking my father questions (he was Cree) and he introduced me to a Blackfoot Medicine Woman who ‘doctored’ me. Her name was Carla. In our time together I learned how to tap into my healing abilities. I continued my healing journey and became engulfed in many natural healing classes, taking everything I could find. Then one day out of the blue, Carla called me, asking me to climb a sacred mountain with her, telling me I was now ‘ready’.
it all, and in order to cope, I began to use Reiki and Theta Healing on every issue and fear that came up. To my amazement, as I confronted and healed each of my fears/limiting thoughts, every court session went better than I could have imagined. Then one day my exhusband just decided he wanted to resolve it amicably; I was so surprised and grateful. I knew that the Theta Healing helped me to change the outcome. My life has changed so drastically after using Theta Healing to remove so many of my limiting beliefs. My life is wonderful and my kids are so happy and confident. I now have the most amazing fiance of my dreams. I am doing what I love every day. Christmas Tree II © Monika Dery — www.onceinabluemoon.ca

The best part of it all is that I now get to help others do the same. I mix modalities to whatever each person needs. It can be anything from Reiki, Access Bars or Theta Healing to all the many others things I’ve been trained in. I tune in to see whatever will recharge and re-energize the client and help bring his/her ‘dream’ life into reality.
I’ve been told that one of my greatest gifts is being able to intuitively know/sense/see what core beliefs are holding my client back. I’ve had so many clients come back absolutely different from changing just one belief, and of course, this makes them wonder what more is possible… Natalie is a Holistic Health Practitioner who practices a variety of different healing modalities. On that mountain I had the most amazing experiences. One of the important things I saw was my family’s future going in two possible separate directions. I went back to my everyday life so alive and amazed by what I had experienced on that mountain, but in my heart I was sad as (over a period of time) I also recognized that our family life was about to change. After my marriage broke up, we both moved on, at first pleasantly. Then he began to repeatedly take me to court to try take away the kids. The court battles were costly and I couldn’t afford them. I was overwhelmed by ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

Why I love Jin Shin Do® I see the body as a whole connected to mind and spirit. Issues arising in the body are often reflections of problems at deeper levels. In all of my massage training and early practice, I was focused on the physical body. What I began to see was that if we didn’t address the underlying causes of our dis-eases, the symptoms would just keep coming back, usually in more and more forceful ways. It became apparent there was an important connection between what was happening in our bodies and the underlying disruption that led to that condition - that spiritual and emotional traumas create an energetic/physical home in the physical body. Specific energetic imbalances lead to specific physical patterns. I tried several effective styles of energy work, but when I found Jin Shin Do® I knew I’d found the link I was searching for - something that could let me help my clients change their lives. Jin Shin Do® (The Way of the Compassionate Spirit) is a unique synthesis of traditional Japanese acupressure techniques, classic Chinese acupressure theory, Reichian segmental theory, Taoist philosophy and Qigong exercises. Developed by Iona Marsaa Teeguarden, M.A., L.M.F.C.C., it teaches body points and exercises that help release physical and emotional tensions (such as anxiety, depression, guilt and anger). Best of all, it helps one learn to transform, rather than repress, painful feelings.
can begin to heal as soon as these are brought to awareness. Once the intellectual understanding of the problem becomes an ‘in-body’ awareness, lasting change happens much more consistently. I recently worked with a client who was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome in which a person has long-term, body-wide pain and tenderness in the joints, muscles, tendons, and other soft tissues. Natalie had tried many therapies, striving to overcome this disease so she could complete her studies at university. She came to see me in March for massage as an adjunct to chiropractic care and it quickly became apparent that she would benefit from Jin Shin Do®.

We started by working on acupoints in the shoulders, to release chronic tension there. As Natalie began to feel better, we worked on balancing the flow of energy in all of her meridians. I then noticed that Natalie had a tendency to ‘freeze’ energy, shutting down her energy flow. When we consider what Fibromyalgia is all about, this made sense to me. She (like many people) stored or ‘froze’ her emotional pain, because she was unable to process and let go of it. So it seemed important to work on her large intestine meridian to help her ability to let go of old things.
Natalie is now feeling much more like her old self. Most importantly, she was able to continue her studies. I’m proud of what I do as a massage therapist, but I’m even more excited about the possibilities of Jin Shin Do®. Dale is a Registered Massage Therapist and practitioner of Jin Shin Do® Body Mind Acupressure. Acupressure refers to any technique using finger pressure on ‘acupoints’ to reduce stress and balance the body’s energy. In my practice, the acupressure points become both the diagnostic tools to uncover the mystery around why there is suffering and also access points to affect the energy flow (that can begin to move the body in the direction of health). All my clients tell me that it brings about a pleasurable, deep relaxation and an increased awareness of both their body and psyche. In a Jin Shin Do® session, you begin to understand how mental attitudes, old emotional hurts and spiritual discordance are connected to the body, and where. We ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

Questions for a healthy focus Whether you have a health challenge or a life challenge, what you choose to focus on makes a big difference. Where’s your focus? With Reorganizational Healing (ROH) my clients learn how to use their awareness of breath, movement and energy to support their healing, life choices and actions. ROH recognizes that you’re the force behind your own healing. ROH asks what behavior would support you optimally in the present moment? Whether you’re healing something or evolving into a whole new level of YOU, the process follows a similar pattern. When you feel fully supported by life (let’s call that ‘authentic bliss’), your focus is on what you value at your highest awareness. Your breath, your movement, your energy are synchronous, congruent and full in every part of your body. Living by your core nature, the wisdom that you are guides your choices and actions effortlessly. Inevitably life happens and you notice things change and/or slow down. You struggle a little more or a little harder but no matter what you do, things keep getting worse. This is the first point where what you ask yourself really matters. Most often at the beginning of a problem you’ll ask yourself: “What’s going on here?” or “Why is this happening to me?” When your groove or flow is challenged in life, a better question is: “Where is this happening in me?” or “What do I need to be more aware of to support myself right now?”
encounter frustration. Emotion is energy focused into motion. It’s the change you’re looking for in healing. Our symptoms of stress are reasons to go inside and consider a change of behavior, one that supports our health and well-being. In order to let the tiger out of the cage, consider the opposite… What if you don’t change and you continue to feel the same - for a long time? Ideally you’ll begin to feel so frustrated that the momentum shifts from “I can’t” to “I must!” When the thought of never changing your response to the situation becomes unbearable and drives you to ACTION, hoooooray! This is the healing.

How did you feel when you were in authentic bliss? How did you become stressed out? Current research in wellness says you lost your focus on what you are passionate about. Perhaps you lost your sense of how to honor that which you’re made of and the choices you created. You started to focus, not on what you live for, but on what you were challenged by. The way we all do this is by focusing on tension. Our culture encourages us to do this. It makes us good followers and it delays our healing and evolution.
ROH says be aware of your tension and focus on the most optimal quality of ease you can feel in your body awareness. Reorganizational Healing asks questions to optimize how much wholeness you focus into who you are as you heal or simply BE. Robin offers Network Care at New Strategy Wellness Centre. It’s exciting how easy wellness can be. To get started today call 780 429-0023. Note: This information is for educational purposes only. We all experience change as NEW and new feels uncomfortable in the beginning. If you feel too much discomfort, it feels unsafe to be in your body so you may ‘check out’, wall off or separate. The degree to which you do this is how much you are fighting your own healing effort. When your focus is on a challenge it’s a sign you need more awareness. It’s a reason to look inside. Instead, focus on the ease in your body. Then feel for any tension and ask: “Is this all there is?” and be curious - you want to

Attracting your ideal weight Anyone who has ever lost weight knows that keeping it off is more challenging than taking it off. Most people regain the weight and then blame the diet. We’re missing the point here. Diets are tools for reaching the weight we want to be - they’re short-term solutions. But no one can stay on a diet forever. That’s why it’s important to create a lifestyle (by investigating and changing our core beliefs and behaviors) so you can maintain your ideal weight. This is easier said than done, because lasting change requires changing your relationship with food. My clients are people who are frustrated with their lack of pervious success. They can’t figure out what’s holding them back and feel overwhelmed with their weight struggle. And I can help them because I know something they don’t… yet. I know that the cause of their frustrations and struggles come from their conflicting values and limiting beliefs about their self-worth, and their lack of knowledge of food and how it affects their physiology. Beliefs are the generalizations we tell ourselves that form the basis of our reality and guide our behavior (often unconsciously). These are formed at a young age from the life experiences we’ve had and are different for every person. I’ve had clients who believe they can’t lose weight because they have other health issues or it’s too difficult or they don’t have time or they’re too old or weight issues run in their family and so on. These types of beliefs instantly limit us and sabotage our success. To create strong and lasting behaviors, we need to work on replacing your limiting beliefs (uncovering what keeps you locked into a certain behavior) so you can overcome past struggles, change your relationship with food and create a greater sense of self-worth.
The weight loss process also involves your goal and your values (the ‘why’ for attracting your ideal weight). Your goal helps to get you motivated, but it’s your values surrounding your weight and health that keep you motivated. I always ask my clients: “Why is attracting your ideal weight so important to you?” and “If you were to achieve that, what would that mean to you or do for you?” Discovering the answers to these questions is the key to maintaining your ideal weight for the rest of your life, not just a few months. As you break through your limiting beliefs and move forward, we also need to explore nutrition concepts, dietary theories, the art of listening to your body, underlying reasons for emotional eating and ways to promote healthy behaviors.

This revolutionary coaching program is a blend of different approaches. It comes from my degree in food science and nutrition, my background in Neuro Lingustic Programming (NLP) and studying with the School of Integrative Nutrition in New York. And although many clients have had great success, it’s not for everyone because it’s not a quick fix. It’s a slower, healthier process because we work on the reasons behind your weight struggle in order to create the lasting change. In the end your weight changes because you’ve changed from the inside out.

Self-sabotage can occur when we have conflicting beliefs about our weight. For example, I’ve had clients who want to lose weight, but on the other hand are also scared of becoming thin. From my experience, self-sabotage is usually linked to an experience from our younger years (child or teenage) and it’s very transformative for the client when we discover the source of the conflict and finally eliminate this obstacle.

Breathing consciously reduces stress by Norma J. Hope Certified Biofeedback Specialist As I move through my daily life now, I have a different way about me, a different pace. I’m living and even working using my own life force energy instead of living on adrenaline. I realized it fully again when I was crossing the street at a crosswalk the other day. The vehicle that had stopped for me honked their horn, even though I really wasn’t moving that slowly. I had to laugh because I absolutely loved the fact that a few years ago, I was the one that would have honked that horn because I was always in a hurry - but not anymore!
nutrient so why not inhale extra, obscene amounts of it on purpose, by choice? Of all our bodily functions, breathing is the only one that can be controlled both automatically and consciously. When breathing is directed consciously by you, it enhances and improves every bodily function, relieves stress inside and out, helps you let go of that crisis feeling of anxiety, reduces anger, fear, old hurts, releases tightness and gets you out of your head and back into your body so you can really show up in your own life. The digestive system is a perfect example of the benefits of conscious breathing. It’s the first and primary system that stress can destroy by preventing absorption of nutrients and elimination of waste/toxins.
Breathing on purpose, consciously, is a necessity for health as it reduces stress. It isn’t easy at first especially when you are an adrenaline junky like I was, but it’s free so keep trying. Breathing enriches our blood. It can affect whether our cells are degenerating or regenerating. It’s a proven stress reliever for pain and muscle tightness, plus it improves the function of every organ system in your body. Taoists have proven results that ‘bone breathing’ even increases your bone density. It’s a crying shame that our respiratory system automatically breathes for us without our conscious involvement. If we had to consciously breathe each breath, we would not hold onto stress as it would be released each time we inhaled and exhaled. This is significant when you consider that stress causes 97% of all disease or illness according to the latest medical studies. You could live weeks without food, days without water but only a few minutes without the oxygen obtained from breathing. Oxygen is, without question, your most vital

I’m living life differently now and it’s been quite a journey. It doesn’t feel like anything is a CRISIS anymore. All the therapies I do as a practitioner are the therapies that helped me get to this place. For years, I have also incorporated breathing consciously into all the therapies as it profoundly helps clients as it did me.
The “Enteric Nervous System” (ENS) is the 2nd brain of the body and is located in the tissue that lines your entire digestive system including your esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. If you are stressed the digestive system is already tight and contracted so digestion won’t happen optimally or easily.
Breathing gives the ENS the emotional signal that all is well so it can relax and that allows essential peristalsis to happen (wavelike motions of movement by muscles in the lining of the digestive tract that are essential for nutritional absorption and elimination of toxins/wastes). You can reset your own Autonomic Nervous System by breathing consciously. Breathing consciously allows the parasympathetic nervous system (relaxed state of being) a chance to engage, which disengages the sympathetic ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

(fight or flight way of existing). Change only happens when you make a conscious choice. Biofeedback training can help you. It really gives you an awareness of how stress is affecting you, how it may be stopping your breath and helps get it restarted so you can get to a place where breathing is easy and allowed. Reducing stress and providing profound awareness is what breathing consciously and Biofeedback have in common. They will shift the old programming to empowerment, healing and well-being. One client, Donna (37 years old), stated that she felt like a huge weight had been lifted off her chest after her first biofeedback session - she could breathe again! After her second session a few days later, she reported her anxiety was reduced by at least 90%, allowing her to breathe into her whole body again. Biofeedback identifies where you hold your stress, your breath, trauma, degeneration and more. It then provides frequencies through a complex computer matrix to retrain or balance where the stress is. It sends specific frequencies (that it identifies you need to reduce your stress on all levels) to your body, mind and spirit through wristlets, anklets and a headband. It’s the most profoundly relaxing and rejuvenating experience you’ll ever have. Biofeedback helps to train your body to be relaxed and to process stress differently in your life. There are over 11,000 frequencies available that your body knows electronically. There are over 850 screens, encompassing anything the body, mind and spirit need in order to reach a stress free state and truly live the peaceful life we were meant to have. It also helps with the undigested or unfelt emotions that may come up during your breathing exercises.
Alternate-Hemisphere Breathing: This is great to do at work or even when sitting in your car. It clears the cobwebs. Sitting is easiest for this one. Start by inhaling deeply through both nostrils at the same time and then exhaling. Begin the alternate-hemisphere breathing by closing off your right nostril (with your thumb or finger, by pushing the outside of your nose to the inside bridge, so you can’t breathe through it at all). Then inhale with your left nostril only, slowly and deeply, to a count of five as you breathe in. Then close off your left nostril too and hold your breath for a count of five. Then release the right side nostril - exhaling slowly, fully. Without pausing, keep your left nostril closed as you inhale to a count of five with your right nostril, then close off the right nostril too, holding your breath for a count of five. Then, exhale through your left nostril. Without pausing, inhale through your left nostril and you just keep repeating this for several minutes to feel more alert. The next time someone asks you a question, stop before you answer the question and take a breath, or two, or more. You can then answer from your truth, what you really feel and not what you think. Your answer may even surprise you when it comes from your being and not your brain! Here are a few breathing techniques I use with clients during therapies. You may want to set a timer initially so your head won’t start running your ‘to do list’ like mine used to. You’ll feel a profound difference even starting with three minutes. The Basics: Sit in a chair or lie down. Start by inhaling and exhaling making each breath slower, easier and longer. Counting keeps your brain occupied with focusing on the breathing instead of worrying about other things. Count to five on the inhale and five on your exhale. The brain is not an easy thing to ignore, so let any thoughts that appear just pass by - no judgment. Just breathe, observe and gently bring focus back to your breath each time that happens by starting the counting again. Unwinding the Body: Start inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your slightly open mouth, several times, again to a count of five. Now, place your hand on your chest and inhale your breath to where your hand is resting. Remember slow and easy. Breathe numerous times until you feel your breath moving your hand on your body. Then, move your hand lower and breathe into that location a few times also. Play with it, moving your hands to your abdomen, on your low back or even on your adrenals (mid back area). Keep your hand in each spot until your breath can find that target, then experiment in another place. ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

I keep replaying it all in my mind and I have no inner peace. Can you offer me some ways to help me forgive myself?” TC, Edmonton
by Melissa Robak Crystal & Gem Store Owner This relationship was a big part of your life. You need to recognize its importance and allow the loss to be mourned before you can move on. I would recommend keeping an apache tear, the stone of mourning, with you and writing a letter to your ex (do not give it to him). Write about everything you enjoyed from your relationship, everything you didn’t, the things you will miss and the things you regret. When you are finished with the letter, have a campfire and burn both the letter and the stone, letting go of the past. Celebrate the beginning of your new journey. Move into this new chapter of your life with moonstone, the stone of new beginnings. Embrace who you are now, recognize that the past is the past and the future has yet to be written. Surround yourself with rose quartz, the stone of unconditional love. It will allow you to love yourself and the world around you. A piece of labradorite will also help you, providing empowerment for change and the ability to help your dreams become reality. There are two flower essences that may be of help.
As you grieve, so does your entire chakra system. However there will likely be areas you feel are more affected than others. To discover where these feelings are being held in your energetic system complete the following exercise.
White chestnut, from Healing Herbs, is for situations where the individual is going over and over the same issue in their mind. Mental arguments and dialogues are difficult to turn off and this may result in restless sleep and a lot of ‘should have said’ moments. White chestnut helps release one from becoming a prisoner to one’s thoughts and to begin to think more clearly and decisively. White chestnut relates to the soul qualities of tranquility and discernment. Learning to forgive oneself can be difficult. Another flower essence from Healing Herbs that can help is pine, which relates to the soul qualities of regret and forgiveness. Behind this lies the feeling of guilt. The pine type can take the blame for mistakes of others and when imbalanced, apologize to everyone around them. In fact, many pine personalities unconsciously choose an inconsiderate partner, without being aware of the reason. They may have trouble accepting love for themselves. Over time, say one lunar cycle or two, the transformed white chestnut and pine individual will be able to move on in life, accept their faults and limitations, feel genuine regret rather than guilt and be able to forgive themself. Robert teaches Earth Spirit Medicine at Northern Star College, instructing introductory and advanced herbal medicine, flower essences and aromatherapy. Begin by lying down in a comfortable and safe space. Deepen your breathing and connect to the rhythms of your breath. See a beautiful shimmering magenta bubble approaching you. Using your breath, start to breathe this magenta into your being. Notice where the magenta flows to naturally. Are there places it moves freely and others where you feel the magenta wants to linger? Once you know where the magenta feels most needed, focus your breath using the emotional support that this energy has to offer. Allow the magenta to melt away your guilt, your feelings of inadequacy and replace those feelings with ones that reflect your inner strength, your soul essence. Feel your emotions becoming centered and balanced. Know that you are loved unconditionally and know that you also love yourself unconditionally. When you feel that magenta has become completely integrated with your energetic system, allow yourself to really acknowledge how you feel, how whole and complete you truly are. Return to this exercise as often as you feel necessary. Shifting gracefully with Chakra Balancing You’ve been feeling it, right? All year (and especially the last few weeks) has it felt like your life is being uprooted? Is old stuff resurfacing? Are current issues feeling overwhelming? Life is more hectic and time has sped up. But know you are not alone! We’re all experiencing monumental shifts and life altering events. The universal energy of 2012, and all the energetic shifts that it brings, are at an all time high. Which is great - through upheaval we gain clarity, insight and growth. We break bonds that have been holding us back and we step into our destiny with excitement and a sense of joy. So why all the commotion and turmoil? When shifts happen we often experience many bouts of highs and lows. We’re really in our ‘stuff’ one day (or even just for a moment) and the next we’re on top of the world! Wow, what a roller coaster. But does it need to be this tumultuous? NO. Shifts can occur with ease, joy and grace. Deep insights and change can be created with subtle and gentle shifts. We can still learn, shift and transform, just with more finesse! Chakra Balancing is so unique and diverse. When working with the chakral system we are able to see past influences, current circumstances and future potential. We can step back from our lives and be observers. By taking away emotional attachments and deep seated emotional responses, we can view ourselves from a very neutral and non-judgemental place. This is the key to insight. This ability to step back and take a deep breath allows for a very deep understanding of how we are manifesting. From this clarity we are able to move forward and create new thought patterns, gain new cognizance and change our perceptions.
Once we recognize the learnings that are being presented to us, we can create flow and ease restrictions. We can choose to look at our old patterns that aren’t serving us anymore and create newness, bringing revitalization and regeneration to our beings in such simple and graceful ways. During the time when these shifts happen we may feel agitation, a sense of confusion and sometimes like we have lost our way. This is due to energetic imbalances. When a shift is ready to happen on one level of our being, it may not transfer to another level quite so easily or smoothly as we would like. Chakra Balancing gently coaxes these hiccups and creates a deep seated feeling of ease. Butterfly Mandela © Heather Brewster — www.heatherbrewster.com

When working through our stuff by means of energetic balancing, it is simpler. As our energy is not bound to the physical realm it can easily be recreated and redirected. Optimal flow can be achieved with little effort and is retained by the energetic form readily and eagerly. Our energetic fields desire to be in balance and operating at optimum, and sometimes all they need is a little help. The gifts that Chakra Balancing can bring (to times of commotion and transition) are full of compassion, encouragement and unconditional love. It is an opportunity to connect with all levels of our being simultaneously with ease and grace.

We may still experience those ups and downs, feel the shifts and the metamorphosis we are undertaking, however it’s how we react and how we feel and think about these experiences that we can change and deepen our connection with the gifts these maelstroms bring. ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

Esoteric Explorations
The dark night of the soul by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist
Our technologies have rapidly been moving us towards global community (inclusivity), yet within our emotional memory we have fears, division and prejudices (exclusivity). Therein lies our dilemma - how can we possibly become a global family when we fear and mistrust the other? How do we merge without losing individuality, create equality while respecting difference?
I think collectively we have been (slowly) making our way out of a “dark night of the soul” and are at a crisis point with it. In order to take our next step we need to see and own the lurking shadow that holds us back.
We have a mixed bag as far as world leaders go, some promoting unity and some promoting fear. Yet we are the ones who keep these leaders in positions of power through companies we buy from, politicians we elect, churches we worship in and causes we support, or don’t. They mirror what is hidden within us.

The dark night of the soul is a metaphor that describes a period in one’s life when there is a profound feeling of aloneness and separation from light; it can last for weeks, years or lifetimes.

In the background of our daily life there are constant global power struggles taking place - governments and businesses jockeying for top position. Often these clashes go unseen or barely noticed; a fast blip in the media. Periodically they flare up and the common person on the street goes to war. We all know the war story - the good guys wear the white hats and the bad guys wear the black ones. In sci-fi stories they occasionally band together when a meteor threatens to hit the Earth, forgetting for a period of time, who was playing the part of good or bad guy. All wars are fear based - fear of not having enough or fear of something that is different from us. Whether they are personal or global wars, they mirror back where we are in our dance of light and dark, unity and separateness. The idea of a collective “dark night of the soul” is huge. How can I, little insignificant Catherine, a speck in the bigger cosmic picture, make a difference? I can reach for light. I can let light shine through the tiny cracks in my fear. Maybe I could reach for that light by bypassing world leaders and connect with someone who I have been taught to fear, or feel inferior or superior to. Or through a variety of communication devices I could simply ask the common person on the street: “Is there a place where we can come together, where our needs are met and we can learn from and appreciate our differences?” And if they say no or ignore me, undeterred I will keep reaching out until I find the people who say yes. After awhile maybe I will forget that I am reaching out for light and simply act like it, finding the cracks in fear and shining through. Quite possibly if I put my time and attention to it I can create unity without it being fear driven - the symbolical meteor hitting the earth. Would you care to join me? Loving the psychic within me by Gina L. Bolton I have been called many names - medium, psychic, fortune teller, prophet, devil worshiper, future seeker and witch. It was even once suggested in my church that I should be exorcised because the devil was using me as his tool. I’ve been made to feel different, as if I didn’t belong in the world because I was psychic.

I knew at a very early age that there was something unique about myself that set me apart from most people. It was in grade three at Redwater Elementary School. My life was as average and normal as any other child. Then one day it changed. It was autumn and I was in school coloring a picture with my wax crayons when all of a sudden, in my mind’s eye, I saw an oncoming car collide with a car I was in. I saw the windshield shattered. I saw my parent’s faces contort in terrorizing anguish. I felt their pain. I heard their shouts. I felt their panic and their tears.
and her wrapped head had a multitude of cuts and bruises. She didn’t have to tell me what happened, I already knew. “Janet, what happened to you?” asked my teacher. “We were in a terrible car accident,” my Mom replied. My teacher looked at me with confusion and horror. After that incident I was ostracized at school and had no friends. Following this, my Mom told me to never talk about my psychic ability to anyone. When I told her that I didn’t want to hide who I was, she got angry and explained that people would call me a witch and shut me out. I felt like I was being rejected by my parents. I was different from my brother and sister and was a secret that had to be hushed up. If I wanted to belong in my own family I had to get rid of this talent. And so I spent a great portion of my life denying who I was and the gift I had received. I determined it was ‘bad’ somehow and that I was abnormal. I didn’t listen to the messages I received. I pretended I didn’t know what another person was thinking or feeling. I never repeated what I knew even though the information often could have bettered someone’s life or given them peace. Instead I ran from myself until I hit a wall and I couldn’t run anymore. In 2010 I met Donna Reilly who is Reiki healer and owner of the Fort Saskatchewan Holistic Health Center. In Donna’s health center I found peace and safety to express who I am. Through Donna’s kindness and patience with me, I started to heal from my old life and embrace my new life. Now I’m myself but stronger. In 2012, through Donna, I became a Reiki healer and started to open up about my ability. When I told Donna that I didn’t want to be called a witch, she said: “The next time someone calls you a witch just say thank you.” Those two words that Donna taught me changed my life. People don’t know what to say when I say ‘thank you’. It’s as if I’ve stripped them of all power.
I couldn’t control myself. I suddenly began to cry. My teacher tried to hush me but I couldn’t stop crying. “What's the matter with you?” she asked me. “My parents have been in a car accident,” I told her. She frowned at me. “No, they haven’t,” she replied firmly. But I knew they had. I saw it. I felt it. They were hurt pretty bad. My teacher tried to comfort me and when my crying did not subside, she resorted to angry words to get me to be quiet. I still cried. Finally I was pushed to the back of the room, away from all the other children and left alone. It seemed like a lifetime until the bell rang and we were released from classes for the day. In the doorway stood my mother; she was badly hurt. She limped on one foot as she placed a cane in front of her for support. Around her arm was a white bandaged splint

My life is now filled with the occasional psychic reading (something I never thought I would do), the odd Reiki healing emergency and I’ve increased my abilities just by accepting myself. I have the support of really good friends (Donna Reilly, Valerie Cameron and Tina Hall), who are all psychics and help me understand myself and how to use this ability I’ve been given. I now tell everyone who I am and I’ve learned that if they can’t accept me as I am, then that is their reality to deal with - it’s not mine. I love who I am. And I don’t mind all the labels that have been placed on me. They are my labels and I get to keep them. Of course I still have to deal with the occasional person who calls me a witch. To them I have only two words to say: thank you. ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

Healing with fire Kathy had spent a few years consciously looking for her purpose. She read everything she could on manifestation, visualization and personal growth. She came to see me in a state of exhaustion, tired of trying so hard and eager for some help to see why all this ‘stuff’ was not working for her. As a medicine woman, I’m a tracker. I use my nose and intuition to find the relationships that are out of balance. I ask many questions (about God, mother, father, self, partner, work, trauma, etc.) and with the help of body-work (Reiki and alchemical healing), use all of my abilities to guide us. I always start with prayer, smudge and creation of sacred space. In most sessions we work outside in nature where it’s easier for people to feel free/open and where it’s possible for me to incorporate my shamanic training, speaking and listening to the divine world around us for signs (to guide me in helping you with your process). And it is often a process, a deep inner journey. I noticed that Kathy’s energy field ‘darkened’ when she spoke about her mother - specifically around her stomach. Her belly was a knot of unresolved issues, so I had her lay down directly on the earth, belly down, as I placed my hands upon her, filling her with light, guiding her into the earth to ground and get guidance. When I asked her to describe the place in her body that was blocking her purpose, she went into her stomach where she saw herself muted with scarves wrapped around her mouth and throat. During our next session we were surrounded by ravens, circling counter-clockwise, pushing us to journey into her darkness, showing me it was time to ask her to see the source of her muteness. I placed medicine stones on her throat, heart and belly. She saw an image of her mother, along with a feeling of being terrified of saying the wrong thing.
I knew it was time for a fire ceremony, the most powerful catalyst for transformation. There is a sacred process involved, and as a trained Ceremonialist, I bear witness and hold space for you, opening the portals between this world and the next through prayer and love, helping your release to be permanent. I asked Kathy to find three offerings from nature for our fire - one for herself, her mother, and gratitude. I sang, drummed and prayed to hold space. It was crucial for her process to observe how nature spoke to her, providing her with objects as offerings that metaphorically represented her issues. She found boughs of dead knotty old pines for herself and her mother indicating the dead parts of the relationship she was ready to release and a bouquet of wild flowers for gratitude. I began the ceremony and then instructed her to name before the fire what she was releasing with each offering. I showed her how to collect all associated energy strands connected to those issues (from her body and energy field) and also place those in the fire. I then had her declare: “I am good enough” three times, sparking a large emotional release. Then a visible shift in her energy field occurred - a sign of transformation. Raven Pose © Lucie Bause
by Sarah Salter-Kelly Medicine Woman
In her final offering she spoke aloud about the lesson she had learned, with gratitude. After she placed it on the fire, I did a ritual purification replenishing her spirit with the magical essence of fire. Kathy was so grateful that she can now learn how to ‘feel’ what she wants, give it a voice, and use that energy towards creating her life and purpose. Sarah specializes in healing personal struggles, imbalance and trauma through ceremony and connection to the Sacred. She is available for private sessions in and programs in Pigeon Lake. It is intended to supplement your current health program, not to replace the care of a licensed medical doctor.
In our third session I ceremonially embodied her mother’s spirit and asked her to speak to her mother about any unresolved issues. Kathy was shocked by what she found a pattern of protecting her mother and saying what was expected out of fear of jeopardizing their relationship. This was a major breakthrough for her; she saw that she does this with most of her relationships - that she has never truly given voice to her own authentic spirit. ILoveMosaicMagazine.com

Sacred plant medicine ‘Ayahausca’ by Sarah Salter-Kelly It has been known since time immemorial that the practice of a vision quest could rid the body of unwanted toxins/energies and prepare the spirit for direct communion with God. When our deepest fears are realized, we hone our greatest strengths. Across our globe people of all traditions, races and cultures have prepared their own methods for this sacred rite of passage, utilizing their relationship with the land around them and their knowledge of its medicines to guide them. In the heart of the Amazon basin, Ayahausca is a sacred plant medicine cultivated for such vision quests and ceremonies. The locals called it the ‘vine of death’ and ‘Great Mother serpent’ as it gives you the experience of being swallowed whole by all your fear, darkness and pain consuming you, until all concepts of self and suffering cease and the light of the divine is revealed within. Traditionally Ayahausca is brought to the people seeking healing through an Ayahauscero Medicine Man, trained in the intricate details of the preparation and ceremony. He is somewhat of a cross between a priest and a shaman in that he or she helps those present in touching God from the inside out, with the use of plant medicine, ceremony and prayer. During my second visit to the Amazon, I sat with Ayahauscero Don Luis for our interview about Ayahausca. The evening before I had participated in my sixth ceremony in which I partook in this medicine.
plants talking and understood. I could help people that doctors could not help. My Icaros (medicine songs sang throughout the ceremony) were taught to me there by the plants and some by my late Grandmother; there is no difference between being dead or alive. Sarah: How would you describe Ayahausca to one who has never heard of it? Don Luis: Ayahausca is a master plant, containing the DNA of the universe. It is a female plant and it is combined with another called chacruna that is male; perfect balance. Ayahausca is a plant of investigation. You discover through vision which species of plants will cure your ailments. First you must confront yourself and all that you fear to see that you are nature, you are not separate; your relationship is symbiotic. Ayahausca takes you there, connecting with everything that has ever been suppressed or forgotten. Sarah: How is it best for one to prepare for an experience with Ayahausca? Don Luis: It is very important to have a proper diet in preparation for six weeks ahead of time (no sugar, no salt, no sex, no alcohol), to realize that Ayahasuca begins to teach you before you arrive and to be grateful for what teachings come to you as you prepare for your journey. [Sarah: I think back to my first experience in 2009 where I faced so many difficult tests on my path here - the H1N1 outbreak in Mexico where I had my layover on my way to Peru… being told all countries in South America closed their borders to flights from Mexico… that a Mexican stamp on one’s passport would not be accepted anywhere… choosing not to believe them… flying to Chile to get to Peru… having to hire a private guide to find my group on the mountain (three days late)… going from sea level to 18,000 feet,
Don Luis has served this community all his life, which is a few miles outside of Iquitos on the opposite side of the Nanay River. In 1980 he founded Kapitari, an organization and research center dedicated to helping protect and preserve the bio-diversity of the Amazon (www.kapitari.org). The money he makes through his ceremonies and teachings are brought back to the people of his land by funding projects that help educate local farmers on permaculture and sustainable agriculture. (Thank you to my translator Rider Sandoval. Where possible, the translation is word for word.) Sarah: Tell me Don Luis, how were you trained in the medicine of Ayahausca? Don Luis: I was born Don Luis Culquitón in the village of Manacamiri of the Cocama tribe outside of Iquitos, Peru. When I was 17 years old I moved into the jungle and made my own hut. I was guided by God and my Grandmother to go there. The energy of nature called out to me. I could hear

sleeping aside of a glacier fighting the altitude sickness that tried to take me down… spending most of my money before I even arrived… By the time I reached the jungle I was ready for anything Ayahausca had to teach me and grateful for all I had managed to learn of myself thus far. I smile and turn my head to Don Luis…] Sarah: You’ve spoken a few times about how important preparation is for the person; how about the preparation for the plant? What are you thinking about while you prepare? Don Luis: I meditate, calling to the plant and its medicine from as soon as I pick it and during the 12 hours of cooking it. I always offer tobacco for the plant. This is important to ensure good medicine. Sarah: How do you create sacred space in the beginning of the ceremony? Don Luis: Cleanse and welcome in God and the jungle. I use the Shakapa (leaves that sound like a rattle). They are like a bell at Mass to call everyone in. Then I use them again at the end to call in nature and offer gratitude. Sarah: Why do you blow tobacco on each of us at the beginning and end of the ceremony? Don Luis: To synchronize your energy and it helps to open and close the ceremony in a good way. Tobacco into the heart and the brain to connect the two, otherwise you leave this place with no brain and no heart… (laughs). It also protects you. Sarah: Each time I have been a part of the ceremony I am in awe by the sense of God that fills me. Why does this happen with this medicine? Don Luis: We are all God. Ayahausca helps you to remember.
Sarah: What do you think of those who are attracted to using Ayahasuca as a drug? Don Luis: They come to get a new drug and then they see it is not like that - it is not addictive and shows that they have God inside. It in fact heals addiction. This is good. Sarah: Many are learning of Ayahausca and cannot make the trip here to the Amazon. How do you feel about ceremonies being held outside of the jungle? Don Luis: I want to share this with the world. Here is better though. There are some who may be mixing it with other plants which can be dangerous; without creating sacred space it is risky. Sarah: Is there a final message you would like to impart? Don Luis: I look after my people. I want to continue to care for those of my community, to share with a new generation. Through sharing Ayahausca medicine with Westerners and bringing them to the jungle, they learn about what an integral eco-system we have, and in turn may shed light on sustainable ways to protect it and the people who inhabit it. Sarah: Thank you Don Luis for your time and your spirit! For more information on Don Luis and his organization, go to www.kapitari.org. Sarah: Many people are coming to Peru looking for a cure for cancer. In your mind, what is cancer and how can Ayahausca be of benefit to those seeking help?
Don Luis: Cancer is energy motivated by personal or genetic imbalance. It is catalyzed through imagination, GMO’s, toxins, and anger. The mind creates all of our sicknesses. Ayahausca helps to purge the body of the sick parts of the mind. I help to motivate the person to release, to vomit out these dark patterns and then I find the plants that will help to heal their body. It is best for them to do most of the work themselves; when they see their own darkness, Ayahausca shows them they have the ability to cure themselves.

Expressing myself through art by Lucie Bause I've always been drawn to the arts. I've always painted and drawn. It's an important part of my life and a natural way to express myself.
Travel, outdoor adventure and the natural environment have been the main inspiration for my artwork while living in the Rocky Mountains. The fundamental theme of my art is always based on nature in some form and I am continually exploring different aspects and approaches to this theme. Regardless of my location, I find a sense of freedom, rejuvenating energy and inspiration in nature, and try to convey this feeling through my artwork.

In 2012, I was granted the opportunity to explore and complete The Northern Ice Project, which was based on an expedition to Greenland and Baffin Island to document, create and present artwork on the topic of changing landscape and shifting borders in the Canadian Arctic. It was an adventure and an honor to visit and interact with the residents of some of Canada's northernmost communities to learn about and experience Inuit culture. My latest work is called InTer-CoNNecTion Series. This is a series of six large scale abstract paintings exploring patterns in nature and the dynamic relationship between organic and geometric patterns in universal design on the micro and macro level. (Italian) With heart and soul
Asking myself and then Spirit I was curiously (and maybe a bit giddily) walking around the famous Salt Spring Island’s Market one Saturday afternoon in late August when I saw it. There it was… this amazing painting of vibrant horses. Yet one lone golden horse reflected my soul back to me like a mirror. I thought: “That horse is me.” Although I’ve always felt a connection to horses, I’ve only ever ridden one a few times in my life. But each time I experienced a rare freedom/power inside of me that was utterly blissful, but unusual. Unusual, because from the time I was little, I’ve consciously (and unconsciously) given away my power/ freedom to others for a number of reasons… often because I thought that someone else knew ‘better’ or more than me. It’s always been my first instinct to ask God for advice when I didn’t know what to do, but He didn’t seem to ever hear and/or answer me. So I spent most of my life looking to other people to act as a medium between myself and God - to tell me what God thinks and what is right for me. And in doing so, I often ended up giving away a lot of my power (and self) to get guidance from others and then follow it/them. It wasn’t until 2000, the birth of my daughter and the death of my brother, that my soul awakened. One of the things that changed me the most was widening my perception of what God is (from the one I learned in catechism) to the energetic vastness that I now associate more with the word ‘Spirit’ or ‘Universe’. After much healing and learning over these last years, my growing self-awareness has opened me to see that God/Spirit does communicate directly to me. This has been absolutely life changing for me. Now I ask Spirit to directly send me signs/messages when I need guidance. There are no burning bushes. Instead Spirit talks to me in the most subtle ways - through words I hear or read in songs and books; themes and stories in dreams or movies; my own vivid memories; powerful images in everyday life and artwork; ideas and daydreams that ‘somehow’ pop into my mind; or animals, butterflies and other parts of nature.
path with a particular thing in my life - whatever I’m thinking about at the EXACT moment I see the feather. For me these feathers (especially white ones) are like a precious gift; it means Spirit is listening and guiding me. Whenever a painting stops me in my tracks, I know it’s a message from Spirit to me. When I looked at this painting I saw this golden horse, amongst all the chaos and instinct to follow the flurry of the herd, stopping to ask: “What do I think? Do I want to follow the others? Which way is right for me?” Once upon a time, being part of the crowd was okay with me; it was like a safety net. But here I am, many years later saying that I want (and in some ways already am) that independent, golden horse. I want to find my own path. A Wild Party © Julia Lucich
by Connie Brisson
I don’t want anyone telling me who to be, or how to be, or how to think, anymore. I want to be free to be completely me. I want to be as independent and wild (as this golden horse) to decide each part of my life, whether that is what is right for me or what God/Spirit is.
The artist, Julia Lucich, was at her Salt Spring Island booth as I was looking at the painting, contemplating whether I should buy it. She called it: ‘A Wild Party’ which seemed quite different from the message I was getting from the painting. Then I thought to ask God/Spirit for a sign (if the painting was right for me or not). Spontaneously I turned to her and asked: “What were you thinking when you painted this piece?” She contemplated me for a moment (I don’t think she gets asked that question very often) and then said: “I thought that we all need to stop and think for ourselves and not just follow the crowd or the popular choice.” “Yes,” I said. “That’s what I see too.” If I could go back in time and give just one bit of advice to my younger self, it would be to ALWAYS ask myself: ‘What do I think? What is right for me?’ (and follow my inner guidance, not giving my power away to anyone else, no matter how ‘brilliant’ or ‘Godly’ they are) and then ask Spirit for a confirmation to whatever intuitive answer I receive. This one practice has changed my life. This painting (that now hangs in my office) reminds me to live it.
In fact, today Spirit again left me a white feather. This is a sign I often get as a confirmation that I’m on the right
