I Love Mosaic Looking back, I think that angel was there to get me out of bed, because if I hadn’t gotten up, I may have even died - I was that sick. It was a turning point in my life. I’ve always held this experience very close to my heart and have rarely told anyone about it. But, when searching for a topic for this editorial, and following the signs, I definitely felt I was guided to share it with you. I don’t know why. I just have faith that it is the right story at the right time. When I became a journalist years ago, I quickly discovered that ‘newsworthy’ stories were not what called my heart. Instead I was drawn to and was inspired to tell the deeper stories of people’s lives defining moments that changed them and shaped the direction of their lives. www.L3photo.com
I’m still trying to do that. In fact, I wouldn’t have taken Mosaic over so long ago if I didn’t have the vision of a place/forum/magazine where many people could tell their inspirational stories of healing and hope - stories that have the potential to change us because their honesty touches us in some way. by Connie Brisson I saw an angel once. It was when I was 12-years-old. I had the mumps and had been very sick for days. My parents owned a general store at the time and my Mom was working there (a few doors down), while my Dad was working out of town. Only my younger sister was home with me. I can remember waking up, in the middle of a summer afternoon, to see this magnificent angel at the foot of my bed. She was celestial. I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life. She actually sparkled. Of course, I tried to talk to her. I was so excited. I mean, an angel, in my room! But she didn’t talk back. She just smiled at me. I can vividly recall the overwhelming love and peacefulness radiating from her. It was so intense and felt so wonderful I remember wishing that she would stay with me forever. I’m not sure what happened next. I don’t know if she told me to go and get my younger sister, Shelley, to come see her, or, if I just wanted Shelley to see her, because I knew this was a truly miraculous event. I was very weak, but I still dragged myself out of bed and went into the kitchen to find Shelley at the table. I told her about the amazing angel in my bedroom and how I wanted her to come and see it. Well, the look on her face was like a splash of cold water; it made me realize the enormity of what I was saying. I had to say it more than once, convincing her to follow me. When we got back to the bedroom, I was devastated to find that the angel was gone. I quickly wished I’d have just stayed with her there and not left the room. All I could do was try to explain to Shelley where the angel had stood and how she looked. Then I crawled back into bed.

Mosaic Magazine — Autumn 2013
Growing up Catholic, I knew all about angels. But growing up Connie, I never expected to see one. God had not seemed very interested in me up to that point, so an angel visit wasn’t something I was expecting. Indeed, that made her visit even more special to me. I felt like that angel saved my life. In my very ordinary world, her visit was significant. It made me wonder if I was meant to do something someday that would help many other people - maybe she had been sent to save me for that. I pray for the angels’ help all the time. I’ve never seen one that clearly again, but time has taught me to believe in many things that I can’t actually see. I suppose that it wouldn’t be called ‘faith’ if it didn’t require belief in something where there is no logical proof. Okay, it’s time now to remind you to think of a question that you’d like a divine, oracle type answer to. What is it that you want to know? You can change your mind Perspective is everything. The way we see someone or something is merely a reflection of our own internal thoughts about them. When someone does something hurtful, we will gather evidence in our mind to prove that our thoughts about him or her are justified. We’re really good at doing this and sometimes we even influence others. It is important to understand that we invent our perspectives and while we may have valid evidence to back up our perception about someone, it still doesn’t mean that our perspective is fact. A Course in Miracles (Foundation for Inner Peace, 1976) teaches: “There is another way of looking at the world.” It says: “You can give it up (your perception) as easily as you made it up. You will see it or not see it, as you wish. While you want it you will see it; when you no longer want it, it will not be there for you to see.” This is some very insightful information that we should not dismiss. I remember working with a woman many years ago that I just loved. She was fun to work with, told lots of jokes, was helpful, shared her knowledge and took her position seriously. I admired her. My perception of her was that she was a really great woman.
unreasonable woman because I was hurt and angry. And yet previously, (before our disagreement) all I saw was a really fantastic woman. I allowed my painful experience with her to invent a whole new perception - one that didn’t serve either one of us. A Course in Miracles says: “To forgive is merely to remember only the loving thoughts you gave in the past and those that were given you. All the rest must be forgotten. Forgiveness is a selective remembering…”
A Life Less Ordinary © Kristine McGuinty — www.kristinemcguinty.com
by Carmen Jubinville Spiritual Life Coach
The two words that stand out the most to me are ‘selective remembering’. We can choose to remember what we want to remember! What a powerful concept! Despite all appearances we have the power to change our mind, if we want to. I know it isn’t easy but it is definitely worth it. What I’ve noticed is that when I practice this idea, the problems I have with certain people or situations seem to naturally fall away and my inner peace and happiness is restored.
If you are struggling with someone right now ask yourself: “What have been my good experiences with this person? What did I admire about him/her in the past? What did I love about him/her the most? What memories of him/her do I want to selectively hang on to?” Carmen is a Certified Life Coach committed to connecting, coaching and empowering spirit-minded women. One day, her and I got into a disagreement about systems at work. This problem went on for several months where we continued to butt heads. I thought she was being really pushy, stubborn and inflexible. I decided I would need to distance myself from her because she was toxic. Over time we both went our own separate ways and my perspective of her remained negative. The truth is, I chose how I wanted to see her. At that time, I wanted to see her as a very difficult and

Compassionate leadership Several years ago I was working as a Registered Nurse and was placed in charge of a busy unit. This was a position I was occasionally expected to fill and I did so reluctantly. The same week my basement had flooded and I was going to be travelling to another province to support a family member requiring open heart surgery. In the midst of this, I was abrupt with a colleague and found myself apologizing. I realized that my stress levels were high and that I had responded to that coworker in a way I would not have normally. This experience led me to reflect on my struggle with leadership. What made an effective leader and how could I care for myself and others when I was in this role? Studying Enneagram Personality Theory and the concept of compassion (from Buddhism) have given me some of these answers. Helen Palmer, a noted Enneagram expert, describes the Enneagram as a personality system and a human development system. Palmer talks about this system as one with nine different types of people, each with their own world view and vastly different ways of feeling, thinking and acting. The Enneagram helps me understand myself and why I do what I do. Each of the nine types has different motivations and core beliefs. For example, I am a Two (The Helper). Renee Baron and Elizabeth Wagele, well known Enneagram authors, suggest Twos are motivated by the need to be loved and valued. Another Enneagram expert, Dr. David Daniels, writes that they have the unconscious core belief that they must give to be loved. He describes one of the leadership strengths of a Two is the ability to support others and one of the leadership challenges is that they can become overly focused on others’ needs and neglect their own goals. Now that I understand this, I can (as Daniels suggests) manage this strength and work on this challenge.
In my opinion, compassion is another element of being a skillful leader; it brings humanity into our workplaces. The Dalai Lama describes compassion as: “The wish that others be free of suffering.” In Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life (Vintage Canada, 2011), Karen Armstrong suggests that compassion is: “Always treating others as you would wish to be treated yourself.” My favorite description comes from a mentor: “Compassion is love and limits; it is treating others equally to yourself and not allowing others to walk over you.” You Have My Heart © Maria Pace-Wynters — http://mariapacewynters.com
by Dona-Kaitlin Beitel, RN Certified Enneagram Facilitator
When I find myself challenged by colleagues the Enneagram helps me find compassion. When my coworker began to question me, I was able to remember that she is motivated by the need for security and that her unconscious core belief is that she cannot trust herself, others or the world. Her behavior was an attempt to find this security, a survival strategy. I can have compassion for her, particularly since I have my own survival strategies based on my Enneagram type. On the days I struggle, I go to the Tao Ching #33, “…Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power….” Enneagram Personality Theory and compassion are a few of the tools I use to discover my true wisdom and true power. Dona-Kaitlin is a Certified Enneagram Facilitator and leads Compassionate Leadership and the Enneagram Retreats. For more information contact her at dkbeitel@gmail.com or 780-886-9991.
The Enneagram guides me in how to work with different types. As an example, a colleague came to me with a concern about a client. I gave her my recommendation and, after she continued to question me, I felt myself becoming defensive. Then I realized she might be a Six (The Questioner) and, as Wagele/Baron point out, they are motivated by the need for security. Once I remembered this, and that Sixes tend to question in order to find security, I was able to turn my defensiveness into understanding and remain calm. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Heal Your Body © Denise Lefebvre
“I have been getting headaches for over 20 years (I’m 40 now). They come in clusters, with one coming after another and this will go on for a couple of weeks. Then it won’t happen again for months or more, but eventually it comes back. When it happens, it’s so hard on me that I often lose a lot of weight (20 pounds) and I need six months to recover. Any insights or recommendations to help me with this would be very appreciated.” SN, Edmonton by Laurena Clark Nutritionist & Paramedical Therapist Severe headaches can be extremely debilitating, frustrating and basically no fun at all. Reactive episodes in the human body can be a result of: • What is put into the body (Triggers) • What is not getting out of the body (Toxicants) • Genetics and hormones Identifying the cause of headaches can be elusive. A journal recording daily intake and activities may provide a clue to your specific reaction. Chances are something you are exposed to may be the culprit. An elimination diet may be something to consider. Eliminate all possible triggers, then slowly reintroduce one food/item at a time and observe reactions. Potential triggers that may set you off include chemicals (detergents, fabric softeners, household cleaners, by Anny Slegten Headaches could be considered as an alert that something is going on either physically or emotionally. Since I am not a physician (and wanting to make sure you consulted a medical doctor), my first question to you would be: “What did the doctor say?” and then I’d ask what was prescribed for relief. Regardless of what age the headaches started, my clients have taught me that the first instance is a response to an intense stressful situation. One could explain it as a nonverbal response to a situation or an anticipated situation. It is what happened (as a result of having a headache for the first time) that will set up a habitual pattern of response. To explain it simply, the headaches become an automatic response to by Lauren Slade Online Health & Reflexology Expert Cluster headaches are a fairly common form of chronic, repeated headaches. Foods that may help alleviate headaches include wild salmon, spinach, beans, mushrooms, asparagus, kale and hydration with purified water. To alleviate symptoms an experienced Reflexologist would work the entire endocrine system, paying special attention to the hypothalamus, pituitary, brain and adrenal gland reflexes. Each reflex would be worked gently using an anticlockwise, circling, sedating movement.
The most common cause for cluster headaches according to Alexander Mauskop, MD, (http://www.headaches.org/), a neurologist at New York Headache Center in Manhattan, is low magnesium. “Magnesium infusion may work in part by opening the constricted blood vessels that cause the headaches,” he says.
In my personal clinic, we have had great results relieving headache pain using a topically applied pain relief strip (now a FDA Listed Class 1 Medical Device for pain relief) covering the reflexes on the sole of the feet. Space prevents me from a more detailed explanation here. Contact me (information below) to find out specific information on this brand new protocol that we are using with incredible results.
Cluster headaches also appear to be related to the body’s sudden release of histamine or serotonin. A small area at the base of the brain called the hypothalamus may be involved.

Homeopathy and genetics A lot of folks come to my clinic believing that whatever they are suffering from is unavoidable because of genetics. And thanks to Angelina Jolie, genetic testing is at the fore of everyone’s thoughts right now. But is genetic testing (and prophylactic bodypart removal) a viable way to protect your health? What is it that sets us up for disease?
the case of asthma! The solution is the removal of the mistunement through the properly chosen homeopathic medicine. Then the expression, on the physical level, can heal… whatever that expression might be (something genetic testing can’t predict!) You can think of the mistunement as a state of mind. Each disease has one and the chronic miasms are no exception. But it’s important not to take this too lightly. Once a mistunement has taken hold, it won’t be removed by changing your thoughts or doing affirmations… although some of those teachings can be very helpful in conjunction with the properly chosen homeopathic medicine(s). In My Bliss © Bernadette McCormack
by Tammie Quick DMH, DHHP
Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1845) the father of Homeopathy and Heilkunst, taught that disease is the product, not of disease matter, but rather a spiritlike mistuning of the life force. These mistunings can occur after a shock or trauma such as the sudden death of a loved one, a car accident or even a bad ‘flu’. Additionally poor lifestyle habits can cause ‘mistunements’, as can external influences like poison. But they can also be the result of your genetic inheritance. In fact, typically, the various traumas that occur in life will accumulate and turn on the symptoms of your genetic inheritance. Hahnemann termed these chronic disease conditions miasms, once he recognized that something was underneath the symptoms and the reason why only treating symptoms didn’t always work. In his lifetime Hahnemann recognized three miasms… psorinum, sycosis and syphilinum, but as time goes on and as the science of Heilkunst continues to expand, we now recognize tuberculinum, carcinosin, bacillinum, ringworm, malaria and (now) lyme as chronic diseases whose symptoms can show up generations later in someone who has never been afflicted with an acute case of tuberculosis, for example.
• • • • • •
Here’s a brief look at each miasm. Keep in mind that they can pop up for anyone at any time, but that each is part of a yearly cycle.
• Psorinum - Lack or poverty consciousness. Considered the mother of all disease. Skin issues. • Malaria - Victimization/prosecution. G.I. disturbances. • Tuberculinum - Restlessness; need for change and excitement. Lungs/bronchial/allergies. Bacillinum - “I want to but I can’t.” Often helpful for people who want to lose weight. Ringworm - Persecution but with very real victimization. Skin issues. Sycosis (Medhorrinum now) - Excess; sex, drugs and rock’n roll! Carcinosin - Resignation. “This is what is expected of me. What I want doesn’t matter.” Various cancers. Syphillinum - Destruction; self-destruction. Ulceration/ addictions/ mental illness. Lyme - Achieve-aholic. Can’t let others do it or it will be wrong. Exhaustion and pain.

To continue the tuberculosis example, this means that someone suffering with asthma, who also has various allergies, is quite restless and needs to get away in winter, changes jobs frequently, had some behavior problems as a child, craves smoked meats, is extremely groggy (and grouchy!) in the mornings and has a family history of allergies and asthma, likely had an ancestor (or two!) who suffered with tuberculosis and passed the ‘mistuning’ on to him/her. However it does not manifest as an acute infection of tuberculosis, but as chronic asthma. Heilkunst recognizes that a disease is a ‘mistunement’, not disease matter. So the solution isn’t to remove the breasts (as Angelina did) or the lungs for that matter in www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Flame bearers of the ancient code chanting it at bedtime. Later, as life and death came full circle, Deva returned the blessing, chanting the same prayer to her 83-year-old father, as he took his last breath.
© Deva Premal
When Deva was only fifteen, the yearning for enlightenment encouraged by her father, led her to India and the ashram of the controversial Indian mystic, Osho. Five years later she met English-born Miten there, 23 years her senior, also searching for true meaning after his burntout rock-star lifestyle, playing with bands like Fleetwood Mac, Ry Cooder and the Kinks.
by Marina Michaelides What do an Iraqi war vet, a 911 firefighter, the Dalai Lama, Cher, a teacher of autistic children, prisoners and emergency-ward nurses have in common? They’ve all found solace and inspiration in Deva Premal and Miten’s music. This unusual couple, 23 years apart in age, together almost 24/7 since 1990, partners in love and music, have been at the vanguard of harnessing the healing powers of ancient Indian sound formulas and fusing them with contemporary rhythms. They’ve taken musical medicine out of the ashram and into the mainstream. Mantra is a code - a tool for transformation. It’s an ancient scientific system of healing sounds, unlocked 5000 years ago in India, with the profound effect of purifying both singer and listener, soothing the spirit and uplifting the soul. As yoga, meditation and the thirst for a meaningful spiritual antidote to our crazy-mixed-up-world grows worldwide, so has Deva and Miten’s popularity, taking them beyond sales of millions of albums, to packed auditoriums in more than 25 countries annually where they are welcomed and adored by thousands.
With Miten’s encouragement Deva discovered her voice. During her first recording session of the best-selling album, The Essence (White Swan Records, 2008), Miten reflects: “Her voice opened and everyone’s jaws dropped, including mine. Her voice is such a pure expression. There’s no ego in it. That’s what touches us all. Deva has never aspired to be a nightclub singer or any kind of professional singer. Her canvas is meditation temples. There’s a different dimension at play.” As beautiful and enchanting as their music may be, Deva Premal and Miten are on much more of a mission than merely blissing out audiences with a temporary melodic love fix. They see themselves as flame carriers of an ancient tradition, with a serious responsibility. “We have stumbled upon an alternative to misery: the power of sound,” says Deva. “We are doing our best to share it,” Miten confides. “We experience this music as a doorway to transformation. It is our honor to be the messengers of these mantras.” To celebrate their new album, A Deeper Light (White Swan Records, 2013), Deva and Miten are setting out on the 2013 MantraFest Tour with their friends and fellow mantra pioneers, The GuruGanesha Band. Kicking off September 10, 2013, the tour extends from Montreal to Miami, across North America (tour dates and locations can be found at www.BrightStarEvents.net). They will be performing in Calgary on October 17 at the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts and in Edmonton on October 18 at the Oasis Conference Centre. To listen to A Deeper Light, go to www.WhiteSwanRecords.com For more information, go to www.DevaPremalMiten.com (also on Facebook & Twitter).
Deva and Miten’s world renown concerts are more communion than performance. Thousands chant together, creating a unity that compounds the music’s power to calm and uplift the spirit. There are tears, there is laughter, there is release, there is a space of profound connection and transcendence. Mantras are in German-born Deva’s blood. Her über spiritual German father, Wolfgang, chanted what is now acknowledged as humanity’s oldest and sacred prayer, the Gayatri Mantra, every day during the pregnancy and at her birth when she took her first breath. Deva herself maintained this tradition throughout her childhood,

The importance of being present In my practice, I am reminded over and over that no matter what I do, nothing changes for the person on the table unless they are willing to get involved. There is no magic that I can perform that will end someone else’s pain, and healing only happens when the client is willing to search out the source of their pain. What I can do is hold space for healing and guide the client to an awareness of where their particular pain comes from and that is what I offer in Jin Shin Do sessions. One of the things that my clients constantly remind me of is how hard it is to stay present when there are so many things going on in our lives. We get busy with a constant barrage of events and the solution is to slap a quick label on each thing and then move on to the next thing. The danger of this is that we never take the time to fully experience each event because we are constantly being catapulted on to the next. At the end of the day, it is easy to look back on the quantity of input we have experienced and then fall into the ‘victim’ mentality of “too much is happening TO me for me to be able to stay present.” As a young child, we are not equipped to deal with many of the things that happen to us and are not able to fully process the trauma that we experience. Whether these traumas are mild or severe, patterns of avoidance begin to be formed that stay with us for the rest of our lives. If we can stay present in our lives, we are more able to recognize the patterns of avoidance that we have established and that reminds us to stop and experience our life instead of avoiding it.
The process looks like this: take one feeling at a time, experience it fully, follow the path of that feeling in the body (with some guidance) and look at how the self tries to cover up or remove that feeling. This allows the client to understand the source of the feeling and stop resisting the need to experience it. Often the feelings that are being resisted lose their power to hold us back when we can just allow ourselves to feel what we feel, without correction or over-interpretation. In a Jin Shin Do session, I will gently hold points in the area of discomfort and the energy will connect to another area that will have characteristics related to the source of the pain. As the client talks about the characteristics of the points I am holding, she/he will begin to recognize patterns that have long been dormant in their body. Sometimes this brings up feelings that can be processed and sometimes these connections bring revelations about old patterns that, once recognized, can be reworked. I have a client whose body tries to bring him back to being present no matter how much his mind wants to ignore ‘what is’ and resolve his difficulties by creating complicated solutions. When we have a Jin Shin Do session, we are both often surprised at how clear things become when he can let go of all of the thinking and just be present with what he is feeling in the moment.

Our dream of One Great Year © Rene DeFazio and Tamara Veitch
resonated with him, and he phoned to tell me the wonderful news. We would make a life together, it would make sense and we were meant to write a book together. “Of course we are!” I had replied. Hadn’t I already written that very plan in my journals numerous times? Yes! It was there (two months after we met, I had written it for the first time). What had we been waiting for? Well, to be honest, we might have started writing sooner but we probably had to allow the electricity between us to settle a bit before our passions could be focused towards writing.
by Tamara Veitch People often start their stories with: “We never dreamed…” or something along those lines, but this story starts quite differently. We dared to dream. When my co-author Rene DeFazio and I began writing the novel One Great Year (Greenleaf Book Group Press / Red Tuque Books Inc, 2013) we had a clear purpose in mind. It had to be totally entertaining, well written, meaningful and it had to succeed. You see, we were creating a new reality for ourselves. I was a writer, mother, artist rooted in my community and Rene was a writer, traveler, actor with no roots at all. The difficulty was that we had fallen madly-truly in love and somehow, we wanted our life together to make sense and to have purpose.
The day after his epiphany, Rene presented me a 15 page treatment, initially inspired 13 years earlier by Graham Hancock’s brilliant book Fingerprints of the Gods (Three Rivers Press, 1995). Together we began to create. Through fiction-adventure, we asked ourselves some questions. What if reincarnation is real? What if you had past life memory and your soul mate did not? One Great Year took three years of researching, writing and editing to publish, but the result was nothing less than astonishing. Muse, divine inspiration, guidance - all of those terms seem to fit perfectly. Around every corner the information had led us like breadcrumbs first to Tiahuanaco Bolivia, Mongolia, Greece and Egypt. The characters had lives of their own and we were in constant awe of the serendipitous and synchronistic events that led us to their stories. There was a truth, bubbling underneath, begging to be told, and we were ready and willing to tell it!
… and I saw her © Igor Postash — www.ipostash.com
Before us we had two choices - make it work or cut loose. One evening after only six months of dating, Rene threw his hands up in the air and said out loud: “How can we make this work?” Immediately a clear inner voice responded: “Write a book you idiot!” The message
It wasn’t until living in the moment brought us to a crossroads (‘cut loose or make it work’) that we took action. It was then that we were first directed on how we would create the next stage of our lives and hopefully make the world a better place at the same time. The underlying notion of service and creating something worthwhile was with us from the beginning.

One Great Year opens present day on our main character Max Quinn, formerly Marcus, who has 13,000 years of memories weighing on him. Every birth, death, love and loss is remembered, but there is only one soul he yearns to find. When Marcus and Theron are purposely separated Marcus embarks on a journey to find her. The world is cycling out of the Golden Age that he and Theron knew together, and as they descend into darker and more unconscious times, they are re-born. He has memory and she does not. Will Marcus fulfill his own purpose as an Emissary or will his obsession to find Theron render him useless? As the end of the Dark Age nears and the collective consciousness begins to re-awaken in present day, Marcus and Theron are once again united, but nothing in life is ever easy. They are not alone on their journey. There are others in their soul group and the balance of light and dark is ever present. The adversaries are powerful and cruel, from Genghis Khan to Alexander the Great, we take the reader through history placing fictitious characters in a non-fiction world. In One Great Year, the underlying themes of Oneness, the illusion of separation and the absolute importance of our choices, shed light on the interwoven nature of the Universe. We are all connected and the ‘Grid’ is laid out simply and practically for all to see. We were profoundly influenced in our writing by a huge list of people from authors to scientists, to Swami’s and skeptics and our individual development has also known an unprecedented time of growth and change. Rene and I have to wonder, are we like Marcus and Theron? Have we known each other in past lives? Can this familiarity and connection between us be explained?
recently partnered with Greenleaf Book Group for worldwide distribution. It seems as though we have the entire universe on our side and we know that as long as we keep working hard, it will only continue to grow. Readers constantly ask us: “Is this stuff real?” and we are happy to report YES! Not only are some of the characters in the book pulled right from the pages of history, so are the places, theories and events. Rene and I have been filming a documentary, Our One Great Year, discussing the mysteries and locations that inspired us. We are also holding FREE seminars called POD Parties (Plain ‘ol Discussion about monumental topics) at our local bookstores, talking about the characters, themes and underlying spirituality layered throughout the book. We have now taken One Great Year on the road for more seminars and book signings, so request a visit to a bookstore or library near you! We are also working on novel two and three in the series, because there is still so much more for our characters to share. The dream continues to flourish for me, Rene and for One Great Year, which seems to have a life and purpose of its own. We are living our dreams and inspiring and helping others along the way. We are in complete surrender as these ideas and inspirations flow through us and on to the page and we invite you all to pick it up and see what all the fuss is about! We look forward to sharing more of our journey with you and we hope this article has inspired you to choose your dreams. www.onegreatyear.com
Our 450 plus page novel was immediately met with exceptional reviews and has been compared to the Celestine Prophecy (Grand Central Publishing, 1995) and the DaVinci Code (DoubleDay, 2003). We are thrilled that the information that had so changed and inspired us was having the same effect on others! The story was intended not only to take the readers on a brilliant adventure, but to encourage people to think… to question, and it was succeeding! We had fulfilled our purpose which was to share enlightenment through entertainment and to show a vivid human example of how the universe might truly work. One Great Year has been making people more aware of their own spirituality and the importance of their choices. It is fiction, not self-help, but it is transforming lives. Some of the comments we have heard include: “I am changing jobs now instead of waiting until next winter,” “I am finally getting out of this toxic relationship,” “I fulfilled an 18 year old financial promise I had ignored, and it freed me immensely.” Rene and I are grateful to be a part of so much positive change and inspiration and the dream had only just begun to take shape! One Great Year has now been optioned to become multiple Hollywood movies. We are thrilled and our new partners understand the value of this book in awakening others. One Great Year has gone on to win Honorable Mentions at the New York and London Book Festival Awards and has www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Natural Healing “I have a chronic cough that has been ongoing (off and on) for years but it doesn’t seem to be a ‘cold’. I often have phlegm, a running nose and what sounds like a smoker’s cough but I don’t smoke. I did have asthma as a child, but not since then (I’m 39 years old). What natural remedies could help with me deal with this?” NY, Edmonton
by Donna Reilly Reiki Master/Teacher
by Melissa Robak Crystal & Gem Store Owner
Thank you for allowing me to share my thoughts on your question. While I have no natural remedy (in the form of a concrete product), I do know that the solution is within you already!
Discovering and dealing with the root issue may be tough and may root back to buried issues from your past. I would begin by treating the symptoms until the root issue presents itself.
This goes a little deeper into your subconscious, possibly in relation to your childhood/past. The inner child in you has been crying out for help, but has not been heard. Childhood asthma is essentially ‘not wanting to be here’. Coughs are connected (on an emotional level) to ‘not being heard’. As we get older, sometimes we look to others for something that we should be looking at ourselves. Initially we all came here with the understanding of ‘who we are’ and what we wanted to ‘experience’ but somewhere along the way, we forgot. So those people who are facilitating our ‘experiences’ now become the cause, or so we think! The good news is that if you are willing to try a more holistic approach, energy modalities (such as reiki mixed with hypnosis), will allow you to have a better understanding of what the cough is truly connected too. We can create the healing process just by coming aware of the higher purpose. Donna Reilly, Reiki Master/Teacher, uses hypnosis when working with Reiki. She offers classes and workshops and is the Steward of the Fort Saskatchewan Holistic Health Centre that offers numerous other modalities. 780589-1991, www.fortsaskholistic.com
Wearing a piece of blue lace agate as often as possible will help keep your throat clear and encourage communication. Turquoise and blue apatite placed by your bedside will work with your throat directly and a clear quartz crystal will keep you clear and energized. To address the root issue, I would first start with a chakra set. This will help to align and balance your chakras, facilitating clear thinking and allowing you to discover the root problem. An aqua aura pendant will bring an exquisite clearing energy through your aura, allowing you to face the world head on. Aquamarine will also be ideal, as it will connect the throat and heart, allowing you to work through buried issues, bringing them to the surface. An apache tear will also become a great asset, helping you mourn past issues, though the reason why you need it may not be clear right away. While this may feel like quite a list, your body is trying to get your attention. Use your intuition and listen. by Jackie Pearce Wholistic Practitioner This condition feels very physical to me. I’m not sensing a strong energetic imbalance. As a result my suggestions are based on traditional Colour Therapy. My intuition is saying: “Yes, there was an energetic imbalance as a child which has been remedied, however it has left a physical manifestation - your cough.” For a chronic cough that produces phlegm, I would very much suggest the colour lemonlime. This will support your natural immune system’s ability to heal. Furthermore, as an infra-green colour, it is stimulating. It will work to break up the long standing congestion and purge it from your system. As a detoxification colour it also expels toxins, bacteria and other pathogens from the system. Colour tonations would be my first suggestion - this is achieved with a Colour Therapy Kit. One simply applies the appropriate colour directly onto the body via a lamp (available at Golden Lady Wholistics). If this is not an option for you, I would strongly suggest adding fresh slices of both lemons and limes to your water every day. This will allow for your energetic and physical body to absorb the colour frequency of lemon-lime. Building up this frequency in your energetic and physical body is key to returning to balanced health. Jackie specializes in Chakra Balancing, is a Certified Colour Sound Therapist and practices Reiki as well as Hot Stone Massage at Golden Lady Wholistics. She also offers courses and workshops. Healing our grief and trauma by Sarah Salter-Kelly Shaman “There are no accidents / everything happens for a reason; anything is possible; we choose everything; don’t spend your life trying to figure ‘it’ out - take action! And of course... Sarah, pay attention!”
Gaia’s Gifts © Jayna Simpson — www.paintedplanet.org
This was the soundtrack in my home circa 1988, a repertoire of ancient teachings decked out in the latest new age books, quoted by none other than my Mother daily. They were posted on the mirrors, doorways and walls... You couldn’t miss them and in time their essence formed much of my life’s perspective.
There are no accidents/everything happens for a reason… For the first few years after my Mother’s death I would argue this point with her... “Come on Mom, I used to believe you, but you were murdered so how can this be true?” Her voice in my head never wavered as she repeated these phrases. If we believe this, we know a Divine force is guiding all, that we ourselves could not have done anything different and there is something to learn from the issue at hand. Anything is possible… In Shamanic societies we recognize that we are a sum of all we are in relationship with - our experiences, the people, the places, our beliefs, the earth, God/dess, even time. It is possible to heal the past in the present, to move through time and give voice to the trauma of the past, to call back the parts of one’s spirit that were severed by grief. When we use ceremony to do this, we touch our deepest spiritual nature, changing our relationship with our pain. We choose everything… Our work, our lovers, our children, our pain - all that has shown up in our lives we have chosen to learn from. We may not have control over how the lessons come, or like the shape they take, however they carry the curriculum we need. This can be a tough one to swallow. It means it’s no one’s fault and transcends all victim consciousness, yet it also enables an individual to reclaim their power and begin to recover. Take action (versus figuring it out)… Life is short. We may live in our heads, evaluating and analyzing the ‘what ifs’ or take concrete steps towards BEING what we dream of NOW in the present. It is truly all we have.
I’ve wondered in hindsight if my Mother was intuitively guided to how much I would need these sayings to heal her death. They became the force that motivated me to believe healing is possible in any situation, regardless of circumstance. Eighteen years since her death I have created my own program ‘Healing Grief and Trauma’ to help others transform.
Paying attention… When we are haunted by grief and trauma, running or force will not change this. If it is making itself known within, as it has something to say, what happens when you listen? Sarah specializes in healing personal struggles, imbalance and trauma through ceremony and connection to the sacred. She is available for private sessions in Pigeon Lake. Trauma, grief, sexual abuse, addiction, violence, disease - the heinous experiences that show up in our lives. We consciously want to forget what has torn our world apart, yet this doesn’t make it better. If what we are doing right now doesn’t work, maybe it’s time for something different... Our grief has a voice. It has a spirit. We literally must have a conversation with it (and all that is connected to it) in order to set it free. Move beyond the inhibiting pain, to the place of freedom that lies on the other side.

What is in a symptom? How do our thoughts and emotions affect our bodies? How do we use our awareness to transform the experience of body symptoms? What can we do to deal with the fear and pain that the body-mind is expressing so eloquently in the form of lumps, fatigue, dizziness and despair? What role does the content of our unconscious have in cancer or other chronic illnesses? Is all caused by the environment, genetics and chance? Is there intelligence behind all these symptoms? In pursuing a solution, is there a connection between traditional biomedicine and alternative medical procedures? Is there any role for our body’s intelligence in the solution of a symptom? These questions were at the base of my quest to understand why individuals that appeared to enjoy excellent health, suddenly were diagnosed by their physicians with a catastrophic illness. Logic was telling me that there was another part of the medical equation that was not been taken into consideration. Seeking an answer to these questions, my wife (who is also my colleague) and I enrolled in Dr. Herbert Benson’s mind-body courses at the Harvard Medical School. We were surprised by the first requirement prior to starting the classes. We had to meditate and do yoga for 10 minutes to prepare our unconscious mind for absorption of the minute details we would be discovering while listening to the instructors. Dreaming was part of the class. We learned that the body was the battleground for opposing forces seeking solutions and that symptoms were only the expression of something deeper. We were taught that by focusing on symptoms through meditation we allowed ourselves to transform symptoms from enemies into allies. By going deeply into the nature of the symptom, we could find its creator.
body from talking. The message, when ignored, takes on the physical form of an illness or a relationship problem. Working only at the biomedical level conceals an important portion of the problem. A pill would help but would not solve the illness and a procedure would not stop the body for wanting to tell the story. Denial is not a solution, just a band-aid. The instructors described how the battleground spills out from the individual, to the family and to the community hence the need to treat a sickness from multiple angles, not only the biomedical angle. Symptoms win the battle when we treat them as if they were only in our body. By examining the psychological, spiritual, social and emotional aspect of the symptom we expand the solution. Dr. Stanislav Grof, a physician that specializes in breath-work stated that every catastrophic illness is an emergency crisis. Something is ‘emerging’ from the body-mind that demands to be listened to. Refusing this imperative demand from the body-mind will only compound the problem. Hence the need to treat a symptom as the language body-mind uses to tell us a story that, as practitioners and as caregivers, we have to decipher and listen to very carefully. Symptoms are only expressions of a deeper story that our body wants desperately to tell us and the universe. Symptoms are personal and connected to a deeper story that we are unconsciously attempting to conceal. Symptoms are also coming from unknown sources outside our awareness. We were to reduce the activity of our minds to a minimum to be able to listen to the nano-messages that our bodies were conveying to us. Symptoms are questions that require answers. Children heal with ease When children observe the way their parents behave during a Reorganizational Healing session, they want to jump right on a table and join the experience. Children are naturally curious about the process because they can see and feel that it’s easy, natural and helps people become themselves again. Reorganizational Healing (ROH) uses light touches along the spine, and simple breathing with focused attention, to transform injuries, stress and disconnectedness into the discovery and awakening of your unique gifts. ROH involves supporting the natural and authentic wisdom that we all have within. It involves creating a new experience by changing one’s focus. The way a child heals gives many examples of the kinds of healing, evolving and nurturing we are all capable of. Our children are amazing teachers. The best habit of kids is their curiosity and simple honesty. When a child is injured, if I ask that child what they’re aware of (for example: “Where do you hurt or feel tension?”), the child will always give a very clear answer, even in cases you might think of as complex. When asked, they’ll simply tell you. However, when the child is shut down (due to anxiety, traumatic stress or mere awkwardness), I don’t need to ask them about it. Children in these more intense situations can be communicated with and supported through body awareness and a nurturing touch. I begin by assessing the child’s posture and where they carry tension in their body versus where they are at ease (our body behavior is a reflection of our experience of ‘now’.) In the case of the injured child, I’ll show the parent the tension associated with the child’s injury and how it distorts their natural breathing and posture. The child may have one shoulder lower than the other and one hip higher, or the spine may curve to the left and right, or twist as it ascends as in scoliosis. (Scoliosis improves dramatically with ROH whether you’re an adult or a child!)
breathing shifts and their body moves as they connect again with their innate wisdom. The areas of tension melt away or the tension balances to better support the injured area. Kids often feel better right away. The child’s posture is visibly improved as is their ease of breath and composure. Problems of attention or emotion (such as ADD, ADHD, depression, anxiety or disconnectedness) respond much like the injury example above. The light touches help the child feel safe again in their body by helping the child experience ease in a place that was alienated, separated or wounded. The shift happens visibly as breath will come to expand in the wounded body area. The child will have balanced posture and an increased sense of ease, flexibility and focus. Katie’s Imagination © Bev Johnson

When the child sits up from the table, the parent and I see the child as they naturally are again. This is what is so easily achieved with kids, that adults could achieve if they had a similar curiosity and awareness. From as young as five-years-old, a child can learn how to do the first breath exercise. The other day a mother shared how she watched her son do the exercise as soon as he got frustrated by something. It allowed him to carry on playing instead of creating a dramatic catastrophe. The same process works in much the same way for adults. Robin offers Network Care at New Strategy Wellness Centre. It’s exciting how easy wellness can be. To get started today call 780 429-0023. Books We Love by Linda Perry The Crystal Bible, Volumes 1 and 2, (Walking Stick Press, 2003 & 2009) by Judy Hall are great goto reference books on crystals for the beginner and expert alike. From the more common to the rare, Hall provides pictures for each crystal helping you to remember what crystal you bought, with no duplication between the two volumes. Hall explains how to choose and cleanse crystals, their characteristics, how they can be used and where they can be placed on the body for healing. She also gives information on their different colours, how common or rare, crystal meditation, shapes and forms, which crystals are associated with each chakra and zodiac sign and how to make your own gem essences and grids. There is a handy crossreferenced index at the very back where you can look up different issues, ailments and dis-eases. I enjoy Hall’s books as her explanations are short, sweet and to the point. by Rachel Hepler Robert Schwartz's book, Your Soul’s Gift (Whispering Winds, 2012), is the sequel to his first book, Your Soul’s Plan: Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born (Frogs Books, 2007). It is my Ascendant Books’ staff pick. After reading Schwartz’s initial book on pre-birth planning I was intrigued and wanted to read further on the subject. In this sequel Schwartz, again, relies on the personal and intimate accounts of people who have had traumatic experiences in their lives and through the use of psychic mediums and channels he endeavours to reveal the deep spiritual meaning behind seemingly random human suffering. The main concept of both books is the idea that, before we are born into this world, we plan our path including the negative and traumatic experiences. Schwartz tries to bring peace to the question of why terrible experiences happen. In Your Soul’s Gift he uses the specific stories of people who have struggled through experiences such as abusive relationships, incest, adoption, suicide, poverty, rape and mental illness. This book is emotionally difficult to read but the information about how we can turn our negative experiences into a positive spiritual journey is truly inspiring. This is a must read for all who are on a spiritual path. Rachel is a visual artist and crafts person who has worked at Ascendant Books since 2007. Do you need a Soul Coach? by Youmashni Naidoo Soul Coach What is a Soul Coach? Who needs one? And why would you want one? There are many different types of coaching, a different modality to suit different needs and wants of a client. What I do, I call ‘Soul Coaching’. I call it Soul Coaching because it is about living from the inside out. It’s about understanding who you are and what it is that you’ve come here to learn. It’s about your soul evolution. This is the foundation of everything in your life; when you fully understand and accept ‘you’, that is when you can manifest anything you desire.
you learn how to listen to your divine intelligence and do what feels right for you. You are able to listen to your inner guidance system and set boundaries for yourself. You are able to differentiate your real emotions from your ego. By doing this you become really honest with yourself and life becomes about you, rather than everyone and everything else. When we understand that the power only exists within us to create the life we desire, we become empowered. We take responsibility for our lives rather than being victims, even when circumstances are out of our control. It is a matter of perspective. It is about looking at a situation and asking yourself: “Why did this happen? What part did I play in it? What can I learn from it? How do I deal with it?” When we look at situations from these perspectives, we are able to heal and grow, rather than having them paralyze us.
We all have a divine power within us. We come from a source that is pure love, joy and peace and therefore we are a piece of that pure energy. It doesn’t matter what you choose to call it (the Universe, God, your Higher Self), as long as you understand that we all have that Divine consciousness within us, that it’s a part of everything and everyone in our existence - we are all connected. Some people think they need to be in ‘trauma’ to benefit from coaching, but it’s for anyone who simply wants more out of life. It’s for anyone who has ever asked the questions: “Who am I? What do I want out of my life? How do I experience the love, joy and peace that exist within me no matter what happens outside of me? How do I honor myself and what is important to me?”
Last Dance © Doris Charest — www.dorischarest.com
I believe we’ve all chosen this particular time and space to exist, including choosing the people in our lives and our experiences, good or bad. Therefore everything happens for a reason and the present is perfect. It’s about understanding your experience and growing from it, instead of fighting or denying it. When you look at life from a perspective of soul evolutionary growth (rather than punishment or victimhood) you are free to grow and truly understand your journey.
Getting real insight into yourself is also about looking at your true nature and how you have been nurtured. It’s looking at your patterns of behavior and where they come from, and then also looking at your generational patterns of behavior and understanding where they came from. When we honor and accept all of who we are, and everyone and everything in its right order, we are able to accept ourselves fully. Selfacceptance changes everything.
It all starts with you. Youmashni has been a Certified Life Coach since 2004. She offers individual and couples coaching, as well as workshops. For more, go to www.DivinityWithin.ca or 780-468-1212.
I don’t fix anybody because nobody needs ‘fixing’. We are all whole and healthy. There may be times that we don’t feel that way but those are the times we are misaligned from our divinity within. How I assist and guide you is by holding a safe space for you to reconnect with yourself. When you truly see ‘you’,

Harmonically de-stress with Biofeedback by Norma J. Hope Certified Biofeedback Specialist Each one of us has very unique feelings, perceptions and reactions to the little and big things that happen to us in our everyday life. These are a big part of what forms our stress reactants inside. There is no right or wrong way to feel or respond. An event that resonates as exciting or exhilarating for one person, may bring about a trauma response (fear or terror) for someone else.
have, it needs great tools to help. Biofeedback uses ‘harmonic resonance’ frequencies to ‘feed back’ to the body its own similar frequencies, which resonate energetically until balance or harmony is achieved. We are electrical beings who need to get back in sync with our cells by healing like with like. Each and every cell in our body emits energy creating frequency patterns that communicate with the other cells to keep everything functioning. When each cell can complete its tasks without interference, our body enjoys excellent health. Interferences are emotional or physical trauma, bacteria, fungi, virus, mercury, toxins and other pathogens, which disrupt the cells signature frequency to each other, causing miscommunication (ie: auto immune disease) or disconnection from the body in trauma.
Rocky View #15 © Monika Dery
Our body needs all its energy to maintain our health. If the energy frequencies are being used up to rebalance or fix interference, then there isn’t enough essential, continuous harmonic resonance taking place daily in the cells which starts to cause us most symptoms of ill health. It’s like putting out fires all the time. The body alarms and adapts and alarms and adapts. Our ‘unawareness’ is wasting our best resources. Mary Lou, a 58-year-old client, wanted to reduce her blood pressure naturally. After just two Biofeedback sessions, she saw an improvement. She also noticed a new ability to step back from family situations/issues that usually would trigger a negative response. She feels she actually now has a choice. She said her self-sabotaging patterns aren’t high-jacking her as they used too. It is ‘unfelt’ feelings, trauma and stress that cause us the most damage, especially at a deep cellular level physically, mentally and emotionally. “If you bring forth that which is within you, then that which is within you will be your salvation. If you do not bring forth that which is within you, then that which is within you, will destroy you.” Gnostic quote
How you feel (what resonates with you and how) is the deepest part of who you truly are. Whether you feel anxious or angry, shy or sexy, vulnerable or vibrant, the trick is to be okay with allowing yourself to feel how you truly feel in each moment so it doesn’t get held onto (where it ferments inside) interfering with your everyday health.
Biofeedback has 11,000 signature frequencies which can harmonically de-stress our whole being back to its healthy state. It identifies where our stressors are, plus balances them allowing us to make healthier choices. It stimulates our body’s natural abilities to keep doing what it was designed to do - keep us healthy. To get to that place, it is essential to change the old programming and Biofeedback is one of the most effective ways I’ve found to do that. I have permanently deleted (from my personal hard drive) perfectionism, workaholism, being judgemental and extremism, behaviors that began for me due to childhood trauma. I now have the pleasure of just being relaxed and extremely curious, instead of stressed. I believe the only thing that can truly heal the body is the body but due to the amount of stress and trauma we

Bridge of transformation We were told by the predictions and prophecies that the winter solstice of 2012 would change the world as we know it. Those who scoffed as they woke up on December 22, 2012 were too close to the beginning of the change to see it. But as 2013 progresses we see on the world stage that change, massive change, is upon us. We see continued earth shifts and catastrophic ‘natural’ events involving wind, fire and water, water, everywhere - most recently here in our Alberta. We have experienced flooding in our prairie province that rivals that seen on the other side of the globe! We are still weathering that storm. No one any longer denies the obvious. The term global warming has subtly morphed into climate change. We see powerful leaders eliminated or deposed, either removed by people who are beginning to recognize and reclaim their power or they step down on their own when they realize things are no longer the same - that the game has changed. We see demands for integrity, accountability, equality and the democratic process. We see the Divine Feminine rising to balance the Divine Masculine that has held absolute power for so long. We see secrets, injustice, abuse, criminal and amoral actions, dishonesty, corruption and the outcomes of questionable actions, decisions and alliances long buried, now rising to the surface and demanding resolution. We see this everywhere. No one is exempt. The changes are upon us and in the end it will be for the good of all of us and each of us must pass through this bridge of transformation.
there forever, hiding in secret. Until recently they have been stuffed down, managed, denied, compensated for, but now they too are rising to the surface to be resolved. In spite of ourselves we are feeling the changes and they are impacting us, demanding that (like the world at large and the Earth) we too will change… must change. For many, it has become clear the old ways do not work and there is a will to take a fresh approach. I see this in the mature women who seek me out. These women have awakened to the knowledge that there is a better way. They want it for themselves, their children, their families. They seek a fresh approach to resolving what no longer serves them and are stepping out of the imbalances and stressors into their own power.

As we see this happening in the macrocosm, it is also occurring in the microcosm of our individual lives. As the issues demanding resolution rise within individuals, there is a sense of discomfort, an irritation, like an itch that needs to be scratched, a feeling of discontent and the heart-felt recognition that something needs to be identified, addressed, corrected, healed, changed. These symptoms manifest as negative and destructive feelings, fears, worries, chronic physical, mental and emotional problems and behaviors that are becoming increasingly unacceptable. In many cases they have been

Are you meant to be a wealthy healer? Your business fulfils a purpose. It makes an impact. It heals. It transforms.
I see so many holistic practitioners struggling financially. It breaks my heart to see this; it’s not meant to be this way! If you’re struggling to make great money in your healing business, it’s time to turn this around.
This means one thing… as a Holistic Practitioner, you make money making a difference in people’s lives. When people pay you, their lives transform in some way. This means that for you, income and impact are 100% connected. And therefore, the more money you make, the bigger the difference you make in the world. The two go hand in hand. This is why I believe you are meant to succeed.
Early on in my business, I remember speaking with a spiritual teacher about the challenges to making money. I’ll never forget one phrase she said as it shocked me. She said: “the struggling path of a lightworker.” It turned out she had resigned herself to thinking it wasn’t possible to make great money as a healer. When she said this I felt a huge reaction inside, my entire being was yelling: “NO! It’s not true!” I refused to buy into this line of thinking and I’m glad that I didn’t. Since the first day in my business, I set my sights high. I was a generally ambitious person most of my life. I actually started out my career as a Mechanical Engineer (furthest thing from my true calling!) Yet for the first few years of starting my business, I really struggled to make money. It was so frustrating! Thankfully, I didn’t follow the path of that spiritual teacher. I went on to create the six-figure healing business I have today. I have shared my gifts and made a difference in the lives of thousands of people all over the world. And it feels right and good. I learned, the hard way, how to have those days of struggle be a thing of the past. And because I don’t want others to struggle, I’ve dedicated my business to helping Holistic Practitioners tune into the precise energy and mindset that will allow them to succeed. I truly believe healers are meant to be wealthy, now more than ever. Why is that?

We are in such a powerful time of transition and transformation on the planet right now. There are many people in the world struggling because of it. Their souls are calling out for assistance! The Universe wants you to succeed because it means the call of the souls of your clients will be answered. The Universe is 100% behind your success. In fact, the Universe wants you to succeed even more than you do! I know for sure that my success was not created by me alone. The Universe had a hand in it.
I believe it is your responsibility as a Holistic Practitioner to do whatever it takes to get to the place where you are wealthy and abundant, to whatever degree you feel called to. There are people out there right now who can benefit from what you have to share with them. The time is now. I imagine you didn’t start your business just to make money. Healers are called to start a business from a deep place in their soul. They start a business to make a difference in the world and in people’s lives. They start a business to fulfil their purpose in a tangible way, to give expression to who they are inside in a way that makes the world a brighter place. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Shifting and changing with energy work by Jackie Pearce Wholistic Practitioner We are a macrocosm while simultaneously we are a microcosm. All that is within us is also around us and vice versa. In offering sessions, I frequently notice patterns and cycles that the vast majority of us will experience in sync with one another. These often take shape through colour frequencies that are needed to optimize balancing energetically - it may also manifest as similar lessons or life situations that come up.
that is moving in. It is a new vibration that is allowing each of us to truly express how we feel and what we are thinking without any fear of judgment or repercussions of our choice to share what and who we truly are. So why the congestion? This is coming from a place of not feeling supported or lacking in self-trust. What can be done about it? Feeling safe and supported is key to allowing this kind of congestion to release - to be in a space that is divine and infused with compassion as well as understanding. This kind of energy is created through intention, frequency and energetic manipulation, the exact kind of space that is generated for all sessions that I offer. Sensations of being overwhelmed are very natural and common when one is undergoing an energetic transformative process. This is again part of the shedding and release. It can originate from a fear of the unknown and from concern that although release is occurring, is new energy being invited and created? During a session we work together to allow organic release to happen. We are not forcing the process, rather encouraging it to take place and honouring it when it does occur.
Lately it has become very apparent to me that we are shifting energetically right now as a macrocosm, a large shift that a multitude of us are embracing and choosing to undergo.
Symptoms that I am recognizing as a part of this process include feeling a lot of congestion and discomfort in one’s throat (this could be physical, energetic, emotional or a combination of all three), sensations of being overwhelmed, conscious of being more busy than usual, as well as a general lack of energy and focus. You may be experiencing throat congestion as a part of this process because there is a higher level of communication

This shift is all about stepping into who we are and coming into our own authentic soul energy. To elaborate, we are shedding the old and transforming into who we truly want to be; stepping into an energy of our own that we may never have even connected with before, but simply had a deep sense of knowing that “this is who I truly am” and now we have that opportunity to embody that.
Once release has begun we begin to incorporate a flow of new energy to enter your body and energetic being, so that you are always whole and complete. This helps with letting go and our general resistance to change. It’s a tweak, a subtle shift, rather than a black and white scenario where you come in as one person and leave completely changed. You will leave feeling lighter, knowing that transformation has begun and you are in a place to optimize what you would like to attract into yourself and your life. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Feeling extremely busy with a constant lack of brainpower and focus? Not to worry, this too shall pass! As we reshape and reorganize who we are on a vibrational level, we are in a constant flux, flitting from a regular pattern and jumping mid-thought into that which we are creating. This can be equated to a chicken walk, one step forward and two steps back. We feel discombobulated and a bit disconnected. As a result our usual organization and memory goes right out the window. Bringing back mental clarity isn’t as difficult as you may think it would be. Often after just one session you will feel balanced and focused. It is like a mist has lifted and your thought power has a new depth and coherence to it. You may even notice that thoughts or situations that you were formerly experiencing difficulty with have shifted and simply left clear, concise and calm thoughts in its wake. When we feel like we are running, running, running, it is often because we are. As we shape-shift and morph into a more authentic version of ourselves, we run from our shadows and our ‘stuff’. This can quite easily manifest into the physical and create a whole lot of distraction. Many people feel busy (and are quite busy), but then they are not sure what they are busy with. This is precisely the type of distraction that we create physically to run away from energetically. Energetic sessions allow for profound relaxation. This gets us right out of our mental thoughts and busyness and allows us to let go, to surrender and simply be. In this state we are able to become observers rather than participants. It takes the emotions right out of the equation, so it is much easier to see your ‘stuff’ and allow it to flow away and be reborn as new energy. It isn’t necessary to have huge emotional experiences in order to grow, heal and change. Often what we have to release is so abstract that knowing exactly what it was would be a bit of a ‘let down’. It is much better to focus on the results than to focus on the process. By letting go, relaxing and simply being present we create the space and shift necessary to allow our subconscious / higher selves to sort out the rest. This allows healing and growth to be easy, gentle and above all graceful. Shifting requires some element of work, to be sure. It’s simply a matter of working smarter and not harder - that is the intention in my sessions. The more that you, the client, contributes to your session as well as your ‘homework’ outside of sessions, the quicker and easier these shifts tend to be. When you truly want to manifest change and growth it is remarkably easy. Often just a bit of guidance is needed, which I am more than happy to assist with. Oracle Answer Before you read this page, think of a question you would like an oracle answer for.
Archangel Uriel by Liana Shannon Angels have long been known as messengers of God so they are perfectly suited to bring you an oracle answer.
Messages From Your Angels © Doreen Virtue (Hay House Inc., 2002)
These benevolent celestial beings of light act as an intermediary between heaven and Earth, working as guardian spirits or a guiding influence to anyone who asks. When we ask, there is an opening, a willingness that surfaces in us and we become more receptive to them. The card I’ve pulled for this oracle reading is Archangel Uriel, from Doreen Virtue’s Messages From Your Angels deck (Hay House Inc, 2002). Uriel means ‘Light of God’ or ‘Flame of God’ and he illuminates the path both within us and outside of us. Like all the archangels, Uriel has certain areas of specialization. He helps us heal emotions, past traumas, brings harmony and peaceful progress to a turbulent situation, inspires us with brilliant solutions and heals the earth. In the introduction to her archangel cards, Doreen Virtue refers to the archangels as the ‘managers’ of our guardian angels. In my own experience, I find the energetic signature of an archangel is more intense than that of a guardian angel. My guardian angels usually have quite a gentle energy, while some of my dreams and encounters with archangels have just about knocked my socks off with an electrical jolt of their energy. However, that being said, they do adjust to whatever intensity level we are comfortable with. Connecting with angels takes many forms and you will find what works for you. The first thing to do is ask them to connect with you. You may wish to clear your mind and meditate upon them or use a guided angel meditation CD (Jackie Newcomb has some good ones). You may wish to talk to them as a friend while you are doing other tasks. Once you ask for connection, watch for signs. In meditation you may hear them internally, see something in your mind’s eye, feel something such as a tingling in your scalp, or have a ‘knowingness’ of their presence. You may encounter symbols and synchronicities that mean something to you personally that let you know they are there. We all perceive Spirit differently, but the one consistent thing that will help you recognize the angels signature is that their energy and guidance is loving and non-judgemental of you and of others. They may challenge you to move forward in your life, but it is always in a loving, non-judgemental way and often humorous.
28
Mosaic Magazine — Autumn 2013
Like any spiritual discipline, understanding their messages takes practice and goes through different stages. Do not be discouraged if it takes some practice. It’s worth the time! If your question is about general guidance, the Archangel Uriel card prompts you to let go of past hurts, disappointments and mistakes. Forgive others and remember to forgive yourself. You do not have to let people who hurt you back into your life. You can let them go with love and cut those cords. You can also release toxic anger toward yourself. You are not your mistakes or your painful experiences. That is not your identity. You may have challenges, but they are creating you into the unique masterpiece that you are and Spirit is transforming you and your life. Let hope and love back in and ask the angels to bring you a peaceful path through this endeavor. Your greatest victories are still ahead of you. If your question is regarding career or money, ask Uriel to illuminate your path and then pay attention to the www.MosaicMagazine.ca

inspirations that come to you and the positive recurring thoughts that guide you to improve your career. Even if you cannot see the final outcome, he will bring you the inspiration for the next step. Ask for confirmation and watch for signs. If there is a block or a negative job related situation, ask Uriel to bring harmony and shift the energy to clear the block for this or something better. The transition to harmony and a smoother road has already begun. Ask for the assistance to bring this to fruition. Look into your heart and your past to see if you have inner blocks to success or prosperity. If you have ever felt that you do not deserve success or abundance or that it is unrealistic to want an amazing life, it is time to let that go. Know that the Creator wants you to have a blessed life and will help you through your challenges to bounce back and create the joyful life you long for. Trust that success and abundance will benefit others as well as yourself. Help others and promise yourself that as abundance flows into your life, you will continue to share this and your good with others. If your question is about a love relationship (romantic or otherwise), the energy of this relationship is becoming more harmonious. Let go of past hurts and start with a clean slate. If you feel it is time to move on, ask Uriel to guide you in this decision and to send signs of confirmation. If your guidance and free will choice is to stay in this relationship, ask Uriel how you can serve the relationship better and listen to his promptings. Ask him to shift the energy to a joyful one. Angels are amazing energy workers. If you’ve run out of ideas to improve your relationship, ask the angels to shift the energy to one of joy and peace and picture that shift and feel it. You will be amazed at the results. Even if your relationship is a good one that just needs some more passion or joy, ask, imagine and you will begin to see a shift. If your question is about new romantic love, Uriel asks you to prepare yourself for new love by letting go of past
www.MosaicMagazine.ca
hurts associated with relationships. You may want to ask the angels to help cut the cords between you and those who have hurt you or who you have hurt and to help you heal. This could be past loves or family members. This does not mean you will lose those people from your life. It simply means you will release the negative or disempowering aspects that are holding you back from moving forward. You may wish to write letters to past relationships saying everything you wish you’d said and burn the letters as an act of release (do not send them the letter as this will add more drama and the drama is what you are trying to let go of). You’ll be amazed at what this work can do in your life. Then let yourself be open to the angels prompting of where to meet someone and what else to do to prepare yourself. Uriel’s message to you is that healing and renewal have begun and this is drawing love back into your life. If your question is about personal and spiritual growth, Uriel asks you to spend time in nature to heal, be inspired and reconnect with Spirit. Do some of the above mentioned work on letting go of past toxic experiences and ask Uriel to bring harmony and brilliant ideas for the next step in your journey. He asks you to do this in nature (garden or go for walks in the woods or sit in a park). Archangel Uriel and all the angels are happy to help us and remind us that we are all connected in this world and in the next. Uriel teaches us that it is never too late to be fulfilled and joyful. We are not our mistakes or our hardships. We are miraculous creations still capable of peace, hope, love and healing for ourselves and for others. Renewal and blessings are on their way to you now. Esoteric Explorations
Navel chakra deals with our feelings by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist An important point to remember as we move through the chakras is that they are interconnected, with one supporting the other. Because we have an image of the chakras from the root (bottom) up through the crown (head) or visa versa, we may have a tendency to think that (as we move up the chakras) it is better or more evolved. But just as the head is not going anywhere without the feet and the feet are not moving without a message from the brain, so does the root chakra connect to the naval chakra.
At the navel center, our intuitive information comes from our feelings and senses. People who are clairsentient are strongly connected to this chakra. However the clarity of their information will depend on their emotional clarity and boundaries. Individuals who are highly receptive often feel disturbed when others or the Earth is distressed. As with the root chakra, our early environment will have left a strong impression on our navel center. There are two significant lessons to learn here. The first is learning to pay attention to what feels right for us and to respect others emotional rights and boundaries.
We Are Love © Monica Castro — www.monicacastroart.com
If we don’t have an inner sense of strength and safety as well as a measure of physical and financial stability (root), stable change can’t happen (navel). The key words here, as we move into the naval chakra, are stable change. The navel chakra is about feelings, movement, change/expansion, nourishment, creative expression and pleasure. Here we go beyond the need to simply survive into wanting more from life. Pleasure and the desire to feel nourished come into play. That might translate into the desire for a job that does more than pay the bills, taking the time to eat nourishing foods in an attractive setting, sex for pleasure as opposed to an instinctive drive and the desire for a creative expression. Once we learn to find stability in our root chakra we are then able to more consciously participate in mindful change and expansion in the navel chakra. If we do not have the grounding, stability and boundaries that come with a well developed root then navigating the navel chakra gets a bit destabilizing and murky. In the root chakra we learn about physical space and boundaries, in the navel we are dealing with emotional space and boundaries. Physical boundaries are easier to see whereas being aware of our emotional boundaries requires a connection to our feelings. For evolution to occur in the naval chakra we need to turn our energy inward and question whether something does or does not feel right for us.
30
Mosaic Magazine — Autumn 2013
The second comes out of the understanding that this is our water chakra. Water tends to absorb things including life experiences and other people’s energy. Both of these leave lasting impressions on us thereby creating future unconscious attractions. If we were taught (or later in life learned) that people and experiences have different qualities to them, some enhancing and some damaging, we will have clearer waters. Ideally we learned this from our early role models, however if they didn’t possess that awareness then they weren’t in a position to pass it along. In order for nourishing change to occur and creative expression to grow, a person needs to take time to be in www.MosaicMagazine.ca

touch with their feelings and participate in activities that clear their emotional waters. When we don’t give ourselves the time to have that emotional connection the following may occur: • Food, alcohol, sex or fun (whatever that means to you) become a way to sedate or escape instead of being a nourishing experience. Alternatively, we don’t allow anything pleasurable. • We make choices and changes that send us on emotional rollercoaster rides. Alternatively, we become rigid and afraid of change. • We look for ‘the other’ to come in and fill up our disconnected or empty places. Alternatively, we close our self to anyone else. HOMEWORK: As you explore this chakra remember to observe rather than judge. Question how comfortable you are with expressing your emotions, desires, sexuality, playfulness and creativity. Do you have healthy boundaries and know to say ‘no’ to things or people that are harmful to you? Do you allow other people that same right? Are you able to be open to change yet not constantly be in a state of chaos? If you find that you can relate to some of the more challenging aspects of this chakra, following are some ideas/suggestions that may help: • Slow down through a physical activity that encourages connectedness such as yoga, pilates, tai chi or akido. As well, meditation or taking short breathing breaks throughout the day soothes the nervous system and turbulent emotional waters and it facilitates connection. • Use writing, music or some form of artistic expression as a way of connecting to your feelings. • Go for counseling (including holistic modalities), connect with a support group, or get one of the many forms of body-work done such as massage. Counselors and body-workers act like our observers while we either learn about our self or move through a situation that has clouded our vision. • Read books such as Boundaries and Relationships (HCI, 1994) by Charles Whitfield. An Astrologer since 1986, Catherine is also a Hypnotherapist and Meditation Instructor. She brings her unique counselling and teaching style to The Northern Star College of Mystical Studies. Skye’s View
Is tarot beckoning you? I’ve often been asked how I found tarot, but really tarot found me. My earliest memory of using the tarot involved hiding under the bed sheets with a flashlight, spellbound by the images that seemed strangely familiar to me. I was nine-years-old. I have no conscious memory of how I acquired my first tarot deck. I grew up on a farm in northern Alberta near a small community of about 100 people. My parents were born-again-Christians and I intuitively knew that my fascination with the tarot needed to remain a secret. Perhaps my grandfather gave me my first cards. From a very young age I would visit him for a weekly violin lesson. He told me I had special mystical abilities because I was a ‘7th daughter’ and that he would help me to develop these talents. He was Scottish and in their mythology, if seven girls are born in a row (with no ‘boy’ interruptions), the 7th daughter would be blessed with great magical powers. True to his word, my grandfather studied and shared occult knowledge with me and played games which indirectly developed my intuitive abilities. In high school, I quietly read tarot for other students in the library. I was devastated when my favorite teacher kicked me out of the library for this. Years later he contacted me and apologized. I was amazed when he informed me that he was using tarot as a teaching tool in his English class. He even invited me to speak to his class about the symbolism of tarot. I gratefully accepted, feeling a healing ray travel through time to bless my ‘teenage girl self’ who felt shunned for following her passion.
paper and focus on it while shuffling the cards. Intuitively choose the cards, flip them over and receive their messages (whatever spontaneously pops into your mind). Whatever cards appear (with their symbolic imagery) will give you some insight into your question and open you up to unconscious factors and messages. But here’s an important part afterwards - burn the paper and release the question to Spirit’s guidance. Reading the cards is the first tiny step; the bigger life changing guidance will unfold as Spirit steps in and shows the way by continuing to give you signs and messages to your question as time goes by. I’ve had several clients share interesting stories of divine intervention stepping in when they procrastinated for too long about burning their questions. All involved break-ins, to both homes and vehicles, and mysteriously the only thing taken was the bundle of unburned tarot questions. Magic happens when we burn the questions and if we forget, Spirit comes and collects them! This September I’m excited to begin teaching a new class of tarot students. Some students will come for self-development, as you cannot study the archetypal messages of the tarot without going on a deep and mystical journey inside yourself/your life, while others will be attracted to exploring a career reading tarot. In either case, I am looking forward to the stories, wonders and transformations that spontaneously occur each class as Spirit guides us with these ancient tools. The Sun © Roxi Sim

Although I’ve since had many wonderful teachers, my tarot foundations were developed with this amazing mystic. Here is one technique he taught me that I now teach in tarot classes with my own students. Write down a specific question (you would like answered) on a small piece of

Interview with Gregg Braden
© Sean Kapera Photography
by Edie Weinstein New York Times bestselling author Gregg Braden is internationally renowned as a pioneer in bridging science, spirituality and the real world. Following a successful career as a Computer Geologist for Phillips Petroleum during the 1970’s energy crisis, he worked as a Senior Computer Systems Designer with Martin Marietta Defense Systems during the last years of the Cold War. In 1991 he became the first Technical Operations Manager for Cisco Systems. For more than 27 years Gregg has searched high mountain villages, remote monasteries and forgotten texts to uncover their timeless secrets. His work is now featured as media specials on the History Channel, the Discovery Channel, National Geographic, ABC and NBC. To date, Gregg’s discoveries have led to such paradigm-shattering books as: The God Code (Hay House 2005), The Divine Matrix (Hay House 2007), Fractal Time (Hay House 2009) and his newest, Deep Truth: Igniting the Origin of Our Origin, History, Destiny and Fate (Hay House 2011). The Divine Matrix was selected as the source for the made-fortelevision feature, Entanglement and is also the textbook for college level courses exploring new discoveries of science and our relationship to the world. Today Gregg’s work is published in 38 languages and 33 countries and shows us beyond any reasonable doubt that the key to our future lies in the wisdom of our past. With a bio like the one above, it would be easy to believe his to date life’s work is cerebral and difficult to comprehend and yet Gregg has found a way to distill what may seem like lofty concepts into applicable ideas. Edie: Your most recent book is called Deep Truth: Igniting the Origin of Our Origin, History, Destiny and Fate. That’s quite a mouthful. Where does that title come from and what does that mean to you? Gregg: I felt passionate about writing this book. It actually was written very quickly, but it took 30 years to do the research. Since our readers are reading this material, they know that this is no ordinary time, certainly in the history of our nation, our world and civilization and the best minds of our time are telling us we are living in the ‘time of extremes’. It doesn’t necessarily mean that there are bad things that are happening or even good things for that matter, but big things. www.MosaicMagazine.ca
We are living in a time of big changes, big shifts and we are being told we have got to act quickly as these changes are on the horizon. When many people see the change, they call it a crisis and it leads them to think that something is wrong and something is broken. I am watching the greatest minds of our time struggle with multiple, simultaneous crises, whether we are talking about climate change or collapsing economies or energy crises, food crises, health crises. Many different facets of our experience are all lighting up simultaneously and we are being told we have got to act. My question is: “How can we possibly make the choices we are being asked to make until we understand the deepest truths of our relationships to ourselves, to one another, to the Earth, to the past and to the way that we think and the way we solve our problems? What this book is all about is the 300 years of scientific thinking that has led us to embrace a story of ourselves, that is largely one of separation. We have told ourselves historically that we were formed as a random act of nature and that we are separate from our bodies, we are separate from one another and we are separate from the very Earth that sustains us and gives us life, that civilization is a one- time deal. It began on a primitive level and has evolved to the pinnacle of sophistication that we believe identifies us today and that nature was based upon this model that Darwin identified as struggle, scarcity and competition. It is with that world view that we have created this civilization that is now breaking down today. If we look closely, the only things that are breaking are the ones that are no longer sustainable. As I began researching how we can possibly respond to the things we are being asked to respond to, how we can know what policies to enact, what choices to make in our everyday lives, what I began to find is that new discoveries have overturned that 300 years of scientific thinking. New peer reviewed scientific discoveries are now telling us a story of our deepest relationships to ourselves, and our world around us, that is 180 degrees opposed to what we have been led to believe in the past. It is a story of connectivity, of unity. It tells us we are not here purely by accident and that there is a deep connection between us and our bodies and a deep interdependence between us and the world around us, that civilization in fact is cyclic and we are living in what is now known to be the third (and probably not the last) of these cyclic advanced civilizations that are now being dated back into the last Ice Age or 13,000 years ago. The one area of discovery that probably holds the greatest potential for positive impact for giving us a reason to think differently about ourselves and the way we solve our problems, are the discoveries in the life sciences that tell us in scientific terms that nature is based upon a model that is called ‘Cooperation in Mutual Aid’, rather than the competition and conflict that we have been led to think about ourselves and one another. People say: “Gregg, Charles Darwin wrote a book in 1859, over 150 years ago and maybe he didn’t get it right, but so what? What difference could it possibly make in this modern high tech, Autumn 2013 — Mosaic Magazine

Interview continued from page 33 digital world that we live in today?” It’s a really good question and the answer to the question is that, yes, Darwin introduced the ideas of nature and survival of the strongest, which is the language that he used that was later interpreted as ‘survival of the fittest.’ Darwin actually said: “survival of the strongest.” It was in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s when the foundation of the modern world was being put into place - civilization as we know it, the economic system as we know it today, the systems of corporations the way we know them today, the way that nations deal ultimately with disagreements between themselves. All of those principles that are very much a part of our lives were put into place when the world embraced the false assumptions of separation and competition and conflict that were believed to be true at that time. That’s why I think with this book, Deep Truth, that it is vital to share this. There is a reluctance and flat out resistance in the main stream to share these discoveries (in main stream media, documentaries, news programs, classrooms, text books) for a number of different reasons ranging from economics to ego. They are being asked to solve the problems with the same thinking that led to the problems.
in the face of the most basic models of nature. We know that conflict exists in nature; we are not going to deny that. It is under specific conditions. What scientists have found, what the studies have shown is that people will actually betray their truest nature of mutual aid and cooperation if one or a combination of three situations are present. 1. When we feel that our families are threatened. 2. When we feel that our way of life is threatened. 3. When we feel personally threatened. If we look at the hotspots in the world today as we are having this conversation… the riots in Tahrir Square in Cairo are gaining momentum day by day, what is happening in the Middle East, with Israel and its neighbors, or Africa or in very specific places in the United States, people feel that they aren’t safe, their families aren’t safe and their way of life isn’t safe. If we are really serious about getting to the bottom of solving our social problems today and bringing people together in a meaningful way, at some point we have got to address these issues. Edie: Is that something you speak of more specifically in the book?
Edie: A couple of things jumped out at me from what you have just shared. Even Darwin’s ideas of evolution are evolving of necessity. The other thing is that I work in the mental health field and do drug and alcohol counseling and a lot of what you are talking about impacts on my client population. Many don’t deal with change very well and I am guessing that most people don’t. Much of what you are talking about is heady stuff, cerebral stuff…. Gregg: Absolutely not. It’s very simple. Nature is simple. If it sounds complex, it is because of the language we use to describe it. I want to be clear; if we want to reach beyond the choir to share this information, beyond the people in the New Thought community, if we want to have an impact in the main stream, we must find a language that is trusted and respected. In the world today, that is the language of science. I am using scientific principles. It doesn’t mean it has to be technical. There are very simple principles in place here. I want to respond to the comment you made that for most people change is difficult. I have found that to be true at times and here’s the reason. If people are being asked to change without being given a reason or why the change is being made, there is a reluctance to putting the energy into doing something different. However, I have found in my experience all over the world, not just in Western culture or society, that when the facts are clear, choices become obvious. If there is a need for change, people will generally embrace it without being talked into it. For example, what we are now witnessing is an era where the use of war is outgrown in the way it was used in the past. We’re no longer fighting wars against clearly defined enemies, defined borders between nations. It is a different kind of conflict that is happening now. To support old ideas of war and wartime technology doesn’t make sense anymore. A lot of people are struggling with that. When they see that we are actually beings of nature and nature’s fundamental model is one of cooperation, it makes perfect sense. The wars we have fought in the past flies
34
Mosaic Magazine — Autumn 2013
Gregg: In the book, what I identify is called ‘The Pyramid of Thinking’. It boils down to a very fundamental question that we have all asked ourselves at some point in our lives and every civilization must come to terms with to be successful: “Who am I as an individual?” There are many of us, so the question becomes: “Who are we?” The way we answer that question in the modern world has largely been defined for 300 years in the language of science. If you ask people: “Who are you?” they will talk about where science tells them they come from and how science tells them things work in the world. Where that becomes a problem is that we are now living 300 years of false assumptions of science that led us to embrace a story of separation. The good news is that with new discoveries, we have asked science to tell us the deepest truths of who we are. Science has done that and now there is a reluctance to embrace what science has told us. Human DNA did not happen spontaneously under a natural condition. The best geneticists of our time are telling us that something else came into place to create DNA the way it is. They can’t say what it is. They give the reasons why. The reality is that modern human appeared on the Earth 200,000 years ago in the bodies that we know have; if we compare our skeletons to theirs, you can’t tell us apart. We haven’t changed. The cranial capacity is the same, brain capacity is the same and the physical proportions are the same. We don’t know what did happen, but because the schools are preventing the full spectrum of evidence from being shared with our young people, they are prevented from seeing a story that is no longer being supported by the evidence. To honor our young people, I’m not saying to replace Darwin’s ideas of evolution. I was trained as a geologist; evolution is a fact I’ve seen in the fossil record for some forms of life. We don’t see it for humans. For over 150 years since Darwin released his book, we have been trying to force the evidence to fit into these pre-conceived ideas continued on page 36 www.MosaicMagazine.ca

our own existence, we are being reminded of the fundamental model of nature.
Quantum physics is redefining our relationships to ourselves, one another and the Earth. We know that our thoughts, feelings and beliefs are deeply impactful upon the physical healing of our bodies and our longevity. Quantum physics is now telling us that the effects extend beyond our bodies to the world around us. It is not about control or imposing our will upon others, but it says that we are so deeply connected that what happens with one family member in a household under one roof has a direct influence on what happens to other people around them. We can’t think of ourselves separately that way any longer.
All of this is interesting and where it becomes relevant, is when you look at the world of crises and how they affect our lives. All of our lives are changing - the way we think of jobs, of money, careers, the ways we support our families, where we find our joy, how we combine the things that we love with things that bring us sustenance in life. All of the way we address those questions are based on how we answer: “Who am I?” We answered it in the past through the false assumptions of science. New discoveries give us new reasons to think differently and live our lives differently.
The archeology is showing us that advanced civilization is cyclic. We have been led to believe that civilization is only 5,000 years old. Gobekli Tepe in Turkey is now being dated in just over 13,000 before present and that’s in the last Ice Age. The Gulf of Khambat in India, a city five miles long and three miles wide, is now being dated at 9,500 years old in a place where we are being told nothing like that should be happening.
There is a question we all ask ourselves every day (and we have, all of our lives) when it comes to every relationship we have ever had, whether it comes to a personal relationship, an intimate relationship, co-workers, friends, family, ourselves or God. Consciously or subconsciously we have asked: “What’s in this for me?” The way it usually comes about is that we say: “What can I get from the world that exists if I do these things?” That’s based on the false assumption of science and who we think we are. The new discoveries give us a new question “What can I give to the world that’s emerging? What I can I share? What can I offer? How can I contribute?” The way we answer that simple little question makes all the difference in the world.
When you start to put these all together, they are interesting individually; they tell a story of us and a lineage of wisdom. How did the Mayans know about cycles of time? Now we know that it was transmitted from an earlier civilization that had these understandings. We know the false assumption of a linear civilization is no longer true. When we get to Darwin’s ideas about the way we solve our problems, I want to say a couple of words. I have a lot of respect for Charles Darwin; he was a good scientist and he attempted to do something in 1859 that had never been done before and that was to take the understanding of how we answer the question: “Who are we?” He was trying to take it out of the realm of the church and the religious institutions and bring it into the realm of science. No one had ever done it before. Darwin himself said: “This is only the first step. I fully expect that my theories will fall because new discoveries will pick up where they left off.” Darwin was willing to allow his theories to fall. It is the pop science of today that is reluctant to let go of that story. They tell us that humans are the product of a random act of evolution. There are so many implications from them. In Darwin’s way of thinking, we live in a world of scarcity and struggle in a dog-eatdog world where we’ve got to fight tooth and nail for our little slice of the pie. The problem with that is that in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, there were 400 peer reviewed studies that asked: “What was the optimum amount of violent competition in any situation, in the classroom, in the playing field, in the workplace?” All 400 studies came back with the same answer: “Zero.” Always, always, always, violent competition is detrimental to the individual, it’s detrimental to the family and it’s detrimental to the species. Cooperation is the model that nature is based upon. If we have any doubts about how deep this goes, we need look no further than our own bodies. We are single bodies made up of about 50 trillion individual cells that must cooperate so that we can have the healthy and vital lives that we do. When their cooperation breaks down, we call it disease and when it breaks down far enough, we call it death. Every day, through

My wife and I live in rural northern New Mexico. A neighbor of ours is a very big builder of ecologically sound homes and he had a crew of 25 or 30 people and he was responsible for their livelihood. In 2008, the housing market collapsed and his business collapsed. He said: “I’m a builder. I’m good with my hands. How am I going to support my workers? How am I going to support my family?” He asked himself this question: “What does the world need right now? Right now, the world doesn’t need new homes. The world needs to learn how to feed themselves.” He took his skills and built modular, sustainable 12-month-out-ofthe-year raised bed greenhouses so that people could have food, without having to go to the store and pay for the rising costs and the pesticides and GMO’s. He built some that can go on a counter top in New York city. Some are 4 x 8 feet and some could be strung together in a series outdoors and everything in between. His name is Ken Kuhne and Ken is having such a good time doing it. He knew that if he could support the emerging world, that he would be taken care of. I doubt that Ken will ever build another home because he is having so much fun. He told me that when he goes to bed at night, he knows he has helped people do something that are really good for them. It’s the old adage that you give people a fish, or a rod and teach them to fish… he’s teaching people to grow food. Edie: A friend of mine calls it being a ‘go-giver’ rather than a ‘gogetter’. Gregg: I like that.

From my heart and soul to the brush I always loved to paint, however it was a hobby until I read a book which changed my life. It was a book written by Lion Feuchtwanger called Goya (Ediciones Selectas, 1967). I was mesmerized by the illustrations of the famous Spanish artist, Francisco Goya, especially by his prints entitled ‘Caprichos’.
Sometimes it’s hard to see the tiny connections between all of the images in my paintings and this is the main idea in my art. While I’m doing my paintings I think about the people who will look at them and make up their own stories about them and maybe smile at the end. Through laughter we rise above all obstacles that life throws in our path. Through the insanity of metaphorical humor one can avoid going insane and survive in an insane world. If even only one passerby of 100, stops but for a moment to contemplate, raise an eyebrow or two, or to even smile at my paintings, I will be happy knowing that my creative efforts have been worthwhile. There are lots of different streams in fine art - abstract, surrealism, hyperrealism, still life, landscape, you name it. For me people are the most important objective in my paintings. The human soul is a treasure. You can find anything there - love and hate, happiness and pain, glory, courage, friendship, devotion, sadness, romance, nostalgia. As for my paintings, I choose three key words believe, hope and love. I always try to put positive energy in my paintings and even if some do look sad, they’re still positive….because tears of sadness can clear our souls too.

I have been doing fine art almost every day for the past 28 years, since 1985. I still ask myself: “Why am I doing this?” All these years I’ve been painting my own world that exists inside my mind. Sometimes my work reflects sadness and sometimes it’s funny and my laughter comes out through the images. All I can say about my art is that it goes through my heart and soul and then through my brush.

(Italian) With heart and soul
The many gifts of crying No one cried in my house. You could get as angry as you wanted, but there was no crying where I grew up. In fact, to me, there was nothing worse than crying. It was a sign of doom - that something was irreparably wrong. I only have two memories of my Mom crying. Once was when she found out that her brother, Tony, had died in a farming accident. I was only about seven or eight. It was the first time I had ever seen her cry and it scared me more than anything. I don’t remember my Dad crying either. I’m not sure why, but I took this as a clear sign that crying was not good or right. If someone cried, the world was coming to an end. Therefore, one must never cry. And I didn’t… ever. If there were a few tears, it was an involuntary response to physical pain. But I never cried because I was sad or hurt or in response to any of my many emotions. I just learned to bury those things deep, deep inside, thinking that ignoring them was the only way to handle them. How did that work out for me? Not so good. Not only did I not know how to handle the many things that life handed me over the years, but my inability to process them, internally and externally, lead to a sort of vacuum inside of me. Whether I liked what was happening to me or not, I knew how to vacuum it up and lock it away deep inside. Or so I thought… I was in my late 20’s when the inevitable tsunami hit. I had moved away to another city for a job, but something happened inside of me that, looking back, I would call a mini break-down. I sat in my apartment and when I started to cry, I could not stop. I called my brother Gene that night and he talked to me for hours and hours and I cried all that time. It was like a dam had broken loose inside of me and even Noah couldn’t have saved me from the flood of my own tears. I cried, sporadically and intensely, for about a week. Everyone was worried about me, but honestly, no one more than me. But that one reckless week with my new friend, Crying, changed me forever. I didn’t know what happened, didn’t understand it at all, but by the end of that week, something inside of me began to calm. I discovered that I could cry, could go into my deepest, darkest abysses and not only survive, I even found some serenity there.

I discovered that crying is cleansing, cathartic. It heals our souls. It goes into those tiny, dark spaces in us and washes away all that is wounded and sad. It nourishes the places in us that are dry and hopeless. It isn’t the enemy, but our friend. Years later, as I began to consciously work on myself, I took many classes. But in a particular chakra class that Catherine Potter was teaching, I had another amazing crying experience/ release that could not help but change me forever. I cried so hard that I could barely breathe but when it was over, there was a quiet peacefulness inside of me, like a silent church. It’s Been a Long Day © Kathy Meaney — http://kmeaney.ca

I cried like that again the night my Mom died. By the time I drove three hours to get to her in the hospital, only to find out that she was already dead, I sounded like a wounded animal as I cried over her body. I had NOT wanted her to die without me there. It broke my heart. I cried ALL night and I let myself… because by then I knew that raw emotion that is caged inside, hidden away, can only hurt you. I knew I had to let my pain and grief out in order to heal.
I’ve cried like this many times, especially over these last 13 years since I’ve come to understand the mind/body/spirit connection and consciously work at healing my wounds instead of hiding them. And the irony is that the thing that I once dreaded the most, is now the thing that I am so thrilled with when it occasionally still comes to visit me. Now when I have these deep emotional cries, there is a part of me sobbing my heart out, and then there is this other part of me that is clapping its hands, so happy that I am releasing whatever is hurtful and wounded in me. Now I know that crying is a gift. I know that I will be lighter (both emotionally and physically) afterwards. I know that I will be happier after releasing whatever has burdened me. I know this cry will change my life for the better and that I will find more peace, inside of me, and in the world. I’ve had many friends in my life, but one that I’ve learned to really cherish over time is Crying. Thank you for your many gifts.
