In this Mosaic… good, but the third one… I liked. It felt “good” to me and we could move in right away. But it was smaller than I wanted. I didn’t know if our furniture would even fit. But Skye liked it too, so it was a serious contender. But making a decision to buy a house is a big deal. I didn’t know what to do. As I was driving back to Fort McMurray after looking at that last house, I was flipping all over the place. I liked it but it was too small. What should I do? Should I just sell our furniture and buy new things? Should I ask the realtor to look for even more houses? All these questions were spinning endlessly in my mind. I needed some Divine help.

boccabellaphoto.com

I prayed for a sign about whether to choose that last, promising house. Then, out of nowhere, a hawk flew in front of me as I was driving, then another, and another - until a total of five hawks crossed in front of me! And that amazing occurrence with those hawks is what ultimately made me choose my house (which we’ve loved). The five hawks were significant because the new house’s number added up to a five. In western numerology, the numbers of your home address add up to a numeric value that tells you different things about the house and its energetic vibration. The five hawks were a confirmation to me. by Connie Brisson Every issue, I wait for some kind of sign from Spirit about what I should write about on this page and also on my Con Amore page. I was asking Spirit what to write about on this page when a coyote crossed my path on my walking trail in broad day light, the other day. I don’t know a lot about coyote or all that they symbolize but I’ve lived here for almost eight years now and I walk almost every day, and I’ve NEVER seen a coyote on this trail. It made me smile, thinking of how Spirit uses animals and birds as a way to communicate messages to us or give us guidance. That coyote reminded me of other times I’ve received answers from Spirit through the sighting of an animal or bird, and in particular about an amazing experience I had with hawks almost nine years ago. At the time, I was trying to find the “perfect” Feng Shui house to move to in Edmonton or surrounding areas (coming from Fort McMurray). Well, my efforts to find the perfect home turned into a four month process where I would have our realtor, Marcel and Skye MacLachlan (Feng Shui Consultant) go to different homes and then I would drive up from Fort McMurray when a house appeared to be really promising. We had probably collectively looked at 30-40 houses in that four months and time was running out (as September was only a month away with school starting). I was beginning to feel desperate and overwhelmed. I knew I had to find something and fast. After considering my options once more, I was drawn strongly again to an area where we already had family that we wanted to be close to.

Before that day, I’d never seen so many hawks and since then I continue to see hawks when I need guidance. They are a powerful sign for me. Hawks represent the process of opening to a higher wisdom and knowledge. They are all about seeing the big picture and seeing things clearly (hawk-eye). When I notice them, I know I’m getting clear guidance from Spirit about whatever I’m thinking at that exact moment. At our next Mystic Meeting, Sarah Salter-Kelly, Spiritual Healer, (www.SarahSalterKelly.com) will talk about “Power Animals” and then lead us on a guided shamanic meditation to meet ours. Power animals are spirit guides in animal form, who can help you find your way through life’s challenges and transitions. Like an oracle, we can ask our power animals for advice on any questions or concerns we have. Our power animals are great tools that can offer us alternate points of view, insight and guidance on our journey of self-discovery. They can support us in loosening up the tight grip we hold on what life is supposed to look like, enabling us to shift into a way of being that is playful, joyful and present. Join Sarah and I for a shamanic journey to connect with the Power Animal you need most at this time, on Wednesday, September 14, Lucina Centre, 9505 – 163 Street, Edmonton, 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. The cost is $20 cash at the door and please bring a gift wrapped book for the book exchange. RSVP by September 13 to mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca if you can come. Also, remember to ask a question to the Universe (you want a mystical answer for) before you read the tarot card article on page 19 by Skye MacLachlan. It’s always amazing to see what the answer is. Enjoy!

I drove down from Fort McMurray again and our realtor showed me three more new homes. The first two weren’t

My story of healing Lichen Sclerosis

by Tammie Quick DMH, DHHP Skin… an amazing organ… in fact the largest organ of your body, covering nearly 20 square feet!

It protects you from the weather and microbes, and helps to regulate your temperature. Plus it’s your boundary from the outside world facilitating sensations of cold, hot and pleasure so that you can process that sensory data and decide how to proceed. Skin can even tell you when you’ve encountered a truth (“I got goosebumps when I heard that,”) or when you should run (“The hairs on the back of my neck stood up.”) Yup, skin is pretty amazing and yet whenever someone comes to me with a skin problem, I proceed with caution recalling whispers in school about how skin disorders are the “homeopath’s lament.” Samuel Hahnemann (the father of Heilkunst/Homeopathy) explained it well: “The human skin does not evolve of itself, without the co-operation of the rest of the living whole, nor does it become sick in any way, without being induced and compelled to it by the general diseased state, by the lack of normality in the whole organism,” (The Chronic Diseases [Theoretical Part], B. Jain Publishers, 1921). In plain English this means that when people have a skin problem, they want it fixed yesterday but that’s a tall order because the problem is actually well established in the entire body, and only expressing itself through the skin. In fact, just putting something on the skin to suppress the eruption (cortisone cream for example) is actually dangerous because it forces the body to use another organ (maybe one with a more important job!) to express the disease. This can be seen in the rise of childhood asthma over the past couple of decades, as prescribing topical steroid creams has become commonplace.

(self-published, 2016), it did drive me mad! There I was practicing this amazing system of medicine, helping people recover from all sorts of problems (even solving the Lichen Sclerosis puzzle for others), yet my own cure remained elusive. Lichen Sclerosis is an eczema-like skin condition that’s becoming more and more common… or maybe people are just getting braver and coming forward. You see LS can occur anywhere on the body and it can happen to males and females but for some reason, it mostly happens to women - on their genitals. The symptoms vary from person to person but can include: pain, bleeding, oozing, cracks, skin that loses its integrity (even resembling the paper used to roll cigarettes) and discoloration. Oh, did I mention the dreadful itching? The fact that LS generally occurs in the genitals and that most sufferers keep quiet about it, gives us a clue about the underlying reason(s) why a gal would develop such a debilitating condition in her “down under” – shame and/or guilt about her sexuality. Conversely, that’s why you may have never heard of Lichen Sclerosis and why I felt this book needed to be written. But this isn’t just a medical “how-to” for LS sufferers. There’s fertile ground in here for anyone with an interest in mind/body/spirit healing, because it shares an amazing spiritual journey – the miracle that (finally) cured my LS suffering. And with a cover like this, you know it’s going to be fun too! It’s available through Amazon and www. quick-health.ca. Tammie Quick, DMH, DHHP, practices Homeopathy and Heilkunst at the Quick Health Clinic in St. Albert, AB. Call 780-221-6127, tammie@ quick-health.ca or www.quick-health.ca Appointments can be in person, by phone and by Skype. Note: This information is for educational purposes only. Essentially before skin can get better, your homeopath needs to fix your entire body… meaning you get healthier but your skin may not show it for a while. Such knowledge is small comfort when the problem is unsightly and appears on your face or hands, or when it is accompanied by an itch that can drive a perfectly sane person mad! That was my story. I suffered from a skin disease called Lichen Sclerosis for nearly 18 years. And as I describe in my book, How to Live Happily Ever After, Down Under

Align with your power by Justine Turner QSCA Certified Law of Attraction Life Coach Are you living the life you truly want to live? Do you know that you can manifest your desires in EVERY area of your life? You CAN have the career, business, relationships, health and finances that you want. You, and only you, have the power to do this. The power has always been there, but the question is: “Are you aligned with it?” Why is it that for some people things get better and better and for others, things stay the same or get worse? Those amazing and “lucky” people are in alignment with their power and you can be too! Is there a part of your life that you would like to be different? It’s very easy to focus on the reality of these not-so-perfect situations because they are in front of you. But if you can use your imagination and get into the FEELING space of what it will be like when conditions improve, you are then getting yourself more so into the ALLOWING space. How do you know you are allowing? Easy. Do you feel good? Then you are allowing. Are you experiencing negative emotions? Then you are resisting. We all came to the planet with this brilliant emotional guidance system that lets us know if we are in alignment with our desires, our inner being and ultimately our creative power. With this knowledge we can become aware of our emotions as a type of messaging system from the Universe, letting us know if we are on track for what we want or not. Brilliant!

allowing. An effective coach is someone who will listen, soothe your energy, take you through empowering meditations and processes, and ask the right questions so that you can intuitively discover your own answers, thus aligning with your power. I love that moment when I can help someone discover the exact beliefs and thoughts that are stopping them from having the life they want. From there, we can create an “Inspired Action Plan” so you can be clear on exactly how to get from where you are to where you want to be. Most humans have this whole thing backwards and are creating by default. We want the conditions to change and then we will be happy. But what we want simply can’t come to us if we are not a vibrational match to it. We are vibrational beings in a vibrational universe! Therefore, we must be in the space of allowing in order to receive our desires. Passion Flowers And Chrysanthemums... © Maria Pace-Wynters

Emotions such as joy, happiness, optimism, enthusiasm, appreciation, gratitude, abundance, love and peace signal that we are in alignment. Just be in those emotions as much as possible and watch what will flow to you and manifest! It’s truly amazing. Once you start to realize the power is within you and always has been, you feel so free. You create your reality. Just you. Isn’t that wonderful to know?

Now, I’m not saying we should repress our feelings because that, of course, is not healthy. What I am saying is that if we can become aware of our negative feelings, then we can also become aware of the thoughts we are thinking; our thoughts create our feelings so having this awareness can truly be life changing. So you realize that you want more in your life. Now what? Well, that’s where a good Life Coach can help you align with your power and get you back into the space of www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Zen at The Seven Sisters The Seven Sisters came about as a result of my love for Reiki and wanting to help others connect with their spirit. After 13 years as an RN, I left the nursing field in 2006 in order to spend more time raising my two children. My path eventually led me to Reiki in late 2011 and by 2014, I obtained my Reiki Master Teacher status. I was providing Reiki sessions and workshops from my home until I decided it was time to consider a commercial location. The Seven Sisters (named after my first meditative vision which was the Pleiades constellation) opened on September 1, 2015. Our store is aimed at providing you with a place to explore what zen, or enlightenment, means to you. It’s a place where you can connect with your “Self” and discover ways you can promote your health physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Our goal is to provide anyone who enters our doors with the ability to leave feeling better than when they first came in. We provide services and products to help meet this goal including: Healing Hollow Essential Oil Blends, Mother Earth Essentials, as well as herbal teas (including our popular Maia Reiki Chakra Balancing Tea), medicinal mushrooms and tinctures, beautiful tea sets, books, incense and smudging supplies, healing crystals, oracle cards, Himalayan salt lamps, meditation supplies, chimes, singing bowls and more. We also support as many local Canadian artisans as we can, as we firmly believe that the loving energy that a handmade item carries can’t be compared with factory made items. Some of the handmade products we carry include creations from North Woven Broom Company, Kootenay Forge, Betty MacRae Fine Art Photography, The Cozy Fox (hand knit/crocheted items), My Chickadee Creations (healing gemstone/crystal jewelry and hand knit/crocheted items), Squirrel House Designs (wooden essential oil/crystal shelves), Two Bit Design (wooden creations), leather handbags and accessories by Barbara, CreeHawk Creations (traditional native bracelets), Old Tin Roof (copper jewelry from the Yukon) and Con Amore Wellness (lavender/scented/unscented eye pillows).

www.MosaicMagazine.ca

One question we are frequently asked is: “What’s with the brooms?” I personally love this question because the gorgeous brooms we carry are not like any other broom you will find. The North Woven Broom Company (from Crawford Bay, BC) were hired by the Harry Potter book series to create their promotional brooms for book launches. They are not only beautiful works of art, but are extremely durable and useful and will last you many years with regular use. Broom folklore says that with the right broom, you can sweep away any unwanted energy from your front door, as well as bring good luck and energy to a new home or union. Well, these are certainly the brooms to help! At The Seven Sisters, we provide Reiki sessions and certification workshops on a regular basis with myself (Maia Reiki), as well as Russ Littau with The Healing Center and Jodi with Willow Tree Reiki. Transformation through horse wisdom mixed messages to our truth and desires ensues. This dynamic resistance takes you out of the natural flow of life and creates disharmony.

Equine Facilitated Learning is an emerging field in which horses are used as teachers to help us explore the power of the horse/ human connection.

The Mind Body Method is organized into four stages: 1) Body – the client brings their attention to their body; 2) Sensory Observation - the client tracks and observes sensations (energy) which removes resistance; 3) Feeling State - the client connects their sensations (energy) to their feeling state to integrate their experience; 4) Message - the client asks and receives a message from their body.

This healing energy modality assists you in tuning into your heart space. This opens the door to truly being able to listen to the language of feelings. As you look and listen to your inner heart-felt messages, you will begin to hear your soul’s voice as it relays your truth through feelings, body sensations, emotions and intuition. This assists in promoting selfawareness resulting in personal growth and a greater sense of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance. The human body carries a wealth of information and knowledge (heart and gut instincts) that can lead us in a direction that our intellect (head and ego) cannot. Life experiences can result in undesirable repetitive patterns that get attached in our head and continuously replay in critical mental loops. By bringing this awareness into the body it opens the door to the attached energy, thus increasing your self-awareness, to consciously live from “the inside out.” Horses are intuitive and sensitive. Their unconditional love will open your heart and help you recognize your feelings. They are spiritual animals in their ability to connect us to the Universe and assist us in a transformative journey of inner knowing. Horses are non-judgmental and only view feelings and body sensations as useful information. Horses have a larger heart and gut than we do. Therefore, they have an expanded heart and energy field. Connecting with them provides the safety and security of having another living presence with emotions and feelings to listen to our fears, emotions and our joy. Horses live in the present and have the ability to keep us grounded in the “present moment.”

A message may bubble up that you find difficult to accept. You may ignore it or wish that it were not there. In order for the “feeling” to shift, you need to accept and acknowledge that this is the feeling, at this moment, at this time. In the acceptance of the “feeling” a shift occurs. We need to be in the “present” to feel this shift and the joy of the connection to our true self. As an Equine Facilitated Learning Coach I have witnessed amazing shifts of energy with clients when they partnered with a horse. This shift allowed the clients’ repetitive patterns to be addressed faster because they received instant feedback from the horse in a safe, trusting and compassionate reflection of self.

Our ranch offers a serene and natural surrounding that creates the perfect sanctuary to communicate and reconnect with the wisdom and rhythms of horses and nature. My program incorporates the Mind Body Method Coach Training taught by Kathy Pike at the Academy for Coaching with Horses, Longmont, Colorado, USA. The principle behind the model is to remove any resistance from experiencing “what is” and to listen to the whole self as part of your decision making process. When we resist listening to the emotions and energy within our bodies, an inner struggle resulting in confusion and

A natural approach to oral health by Dr. Amr Abou Zeid Dentist Dental decay is a tooth disease that is a result of poor genetics, unhealthy diet rich in refined sugars and poor hygiene. The latter two are under our control and in fact become more critical with poor genetics. Our teeth are covered in a healthy good bacteria (flora). This flora can be disturbed when bad bacteria (like Strep Mutans) begin to multiply in heavy numbers (dysbiosis). Think of sugars as a steroid for the bad bacteria. The bad bacteria destroy the healthy flora and build a very intricate city with waste and food channels. Dentists call that the biofilm or the plaque. These bad bacteria have claws and hooks to hold onto our tooth surface as tight as they can. As sugars are being fermented, acid is released and the result is our enamel dissolving away and a hole (cavity) begins to develop on our tooth. Cavities therefore are a result of a diseased oral environment filled with bad bacteria. However, a natural defense exists. Our enamel is a highly mineralized layer that covers our tooth and acts as the first line of defense. Our saliva contains minerals that help heal, rebuild and repair that enamel layer. If the layer is breached, game over; healing is no longer possible and the bacteria zips fast through the soft dentin under the enamel to get to the core where the nerve of the tooth is and OUCH! Root canal? Pull the tooth? As a dentist, when I see that the bacteria has breached the enamel, I am only left with one option. I drill away the diseased part of the tooth and put a filling. Have I cured the bad environment of bacteria in the mouth? No, I just slowed things down a bit, just for that one tooth. So how do we help our body fight and heal naturally? As mentioned earlier, diet and hygiene. With regards to diet, for those with a sweet tooth who cannot give up the habit right away, I say eat them all at once! It is the frequency of snacking during the day rather than the quantity that causes damage. Find sugar alternatives that are not damaging (Stevia) or even www.MosaicMagazine.ca

cavity fighting (Xylitol). And finally increase your intake of Vitamin D and K through supplements, ferments and leafy greens. The body will then have a strong ability to heal and build the enamel layer back. Hygiene’s basic premise is brushing and flossing as well as going to the dentist for frequent cleanings. The act of physically scrubbing away on the tooth surface leads to detaching and unhooking the plaque from the tooth surface, the bad bacteria are washed away and the good flora is allowed to re-establish. Whether it is brushing with water, baking soda or oil pulling, all give a similar effect of shaking things up. Baking soda however can be quite aggressive and I recommend the use of sufficient water to prevent enamel wear and sensitivity. For those interested in SLS free toothpastes, MI Paste, Earth Paste and Remin are great alternatives.

Grace © Jayna Simpson — www.justmyspirit.net

I caution readers on some of the natural toothpastes in the market. Many contain honey and even though honey is good for us, it feeds the bad bacteria when we rub it on our teeth. After all, the infamous bear that inspired Winnie the Pooh had a lot of cavities because Christopher Robin fed him a lot of honey. Also be careful of toothpastes containing citrus products as we do not have enough science to support their benefit or harm to our teeth. Other natural ingredients however such as xylitol or calcium phosphate are known to be beneficial in cavity fighting and re-mineralizing our enamel. Always have the ingredients of the toothpaste or your home remedy reviewed by your dentist to ensure that it is safe.

Finally, recent science has re-established the link between gum bacteria and health ailments such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and dementia. Studies also suggest that frequent cleanings (up to three times a year) at the dentist office reduces cavity risk, inflammation and the bacterial load found at and below the gum line. Dr. Amr Abou Zeid holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (University of Toronto). Dr. Abou Zeid practices a clean and holistic approach to dentistry through mercury free and plastic free fillings, offering needle free freezing options, gooey free digital dentistry and low noise electric drills. Private rooms with heated massage chairs are available for patient comfort at Nebula Dental Clinic, 730 - 91 Street SW, Edmonton. Making a Deer Medicine rattle by Sarah Salter-Kelly Spiritual Healer When I was a little girl - about five years old – I was camping with my family and my Dad, with a glint in his eye, took me aside to show me something special. It was something he couldn’t believe he had stumbled upon in the woods and he wanted to show me it at once.

going to use. We journey to the Tree of Life to discover what kind of stick you need for your handle and why (what does it have to teach you?) and then we venture onto my land to find it. Beads, stones and sacred objects are also named before they are placed within, such as Mother Earth, Great Spirit or Ancestors to name a few. The wet deer hide is then sewn in a circle as each person in the group shares a message they have received from Deer while meditating on the land.

Off we forged through forest and glen until we came right into the center of a dense thicket where a natural clearing had formed, hidden to the outside world. “This is the exact place where Bambi was born,” he told me. Sensations of wonderment washed over me as I marveled at the preciousness of this magic place in the trees and the fact that I could be so lucky to know its secret. The grass was all bent over as if a family of deer had just been there resting moments before we arrived. In my mind’s eye I could see them, smell them and hear them... the wild ones of the woods, the caretakers of the forest, the DEER. “Deer Medicine” is all about the paradox we humans are so hungry for – strength and courage, forged with gentleness and silence. Deer teaches us how to move into the center of our souls, so we may action our heart’s intention (that we discover in the silent moments). Making a Deer Medicine Rattle hones in on the nature of Deer in combination with the viable healing tool of a rattle. Rattles are used in shamanism to break down barriers, soften our edges, help us to connect with Spirit and shake things up. Creating one is an act of power as they are about change and the ability to NAME - specifically what you want, who you are and what you are in relation too. When we are making a rattle from a deer hide we are enclosing, or wrapping, all that we are calling forth... all that is sacred to us, in the medicine of Deer. A rattle is in fact a medicine bag and what we place into it directly correlates with what we get out of it.

Creating a sacred tool is about relationship and time it is not rushed. Allowing for the deep listening needed to bring clarity to this tool helps it to be one that is an effective instigator of change in your life. Join me for October’s two-day class. Sarah specializes in using shamanic ceremony and process to create spirit medicine for individual healing, sacred travel or group trainings/ retreats. The medicine of the Deer guides the whole process; this includes your personal relationship with Deer as well as the collective. For me, I feel a sense of innocence as I am brought back to that moment in the forest, so many years ago, sensing that Deer are in fact guardians watching over me. I also notice the influence of the collective interpretation of Deer which is the understanding that there are alternative ways to heal aside from using force. The guiding power of divination Recently my husband built a tall bookshelf to hold my huge collection of oracles. Many are tarot decks but I also have a special interest in ancient oracles from around the world. Although I own many divination tools, my personal favorite is one I created myself. This oracle was revealed to me, step by step, through dreams and meditation. Its power lies in the resonance it has with the symbolic language that lives deep within me. If you observed this oracle, you’d see a basket filled with shells, stones and other small items that hold personal meaning for me, as well as a cloth with special markings on it. When I am seeking guidance from this oracle, I invite my spirit helpers and ancestors to respond to a specific question or request, then I stir the items in the basket and toss them on the cloth. With time and practice I’ve learned to understand the meaning that lies in the unique way each item falls. As an added benefit, when I’m feeling irritated or confused, just holding the oracle in my hands returns me to a place of inner harmony. But there’s another reason why my personal divination tool is so cherished. It reminds me of a special wooden box that leads me back to my happiest childhood memories. When I was sick or the weather was too miserable for me to play outside, my Mom would reach into a hidden area of her closet and then bring out a special wooden box, carefully placing it on her bed.

day when I asked about the golden ring. With a faraway look, my Mom revealed that she had been married before and her first husband was killed as a soldier in the war. After that, whenever I saw or touched the golden ring, my heart felt squeezed with pain. Another day when I was upset by my screeching attempt to play the violin, my Mom showed me the yellow feather and explained that birds could fly because they never let any problem weigh them down. My Mom’s lovely wooden box helped me to understand that even the simplest items can reveal hidden mysteries and offer guidance. The dictionary meaning of divination is: “the art of asking the gods or spirits to reveal hidden knowledge.” The beauty of an oracle/divination tool is that it can take any form. I have a poet friend whose oracle is composed of 99 poems. An artist I know has created many watercolor paintings as her oracle. My husband uses a set of nine dice as his divination tool.

She would lovingly open the box and reveal to me a world filled with tiny magical treasures… a sparkling broach, a special seashell, several old skeleton keys, a golden ring, a locket with a beautiful lady’s photo, a tiny silver pen, wooden dice, a fairy bell, a smooth strand of pearls and a miniature bright yellow feather. These are a few of the lovely pieces I remember. The day would drift by as I explored the endless contents of this magical box. On really special days my Mom would tell me stories about a certain piece that caught my attention. I remember the

Books of a Wise Woman helpful hints, which she freely hands out to everyone, except maybe the few prominent society ladies who whisper “town witch” when they think she can’t hear. Tessy does what she can to make people feel welcome, help the less fortunate and, of course, defend Mother Earth in any way possible. Yes, she is perfectly happy with her life just the way things are. That is, until what happens after she gives one of her routine welcome baskets to Ladyslipper’s latest newcomers, the Tuckers. With a little meddling from Tessy’s late husband, Dermot, who spiritually drops by from time to time, life takes an unexpected turn.

by Elaine Gugin Maddex I am thrilled to be writing this to all the like-minded people who have a dream! Being a (first time) published author at the age of 59 was quite a surprise, so I am living proof that dreams do come true. There has been an awakening in the past few years that is growing by leaps and bounds. It was this tug at my inner core that prompted me to write my first book, More Than a Wise Woman (Artistic Warrior Publishing, 2015). True, I also wanted to leave something behind for my children and grandchildren to remember my eccentricities. At the time of my writing, I couldn’t find any fun little fictions about Wise Women or Wiccans. There were plenty of reference books and fictions depicting evil witches but nothing of today’s lovely Wise Women doing good for all. So I decided to sit down and write one. I snuck in memorable bits and pieces of growing up on the farm and the simple life of a small prairie community… things that seem to be disappearing in today’s hectic world. I was what some people would call a “closet writer.” People who knew me well were truly shocked to hear I wrote a book and that it was actually published! I set out to write a “feel good” book, one that was timeless and did not require an “age appropriate” label. I wanted to create a fictitious and colourful character. So was born the sweet, eccentric, widowed Tessy McGuigan living in the lovely, antiquated Victorian home, Ashling Manor, in the quaint prairie town of Ladyslipper, Saskatchewan. I am happy to say that More Than a Wise Woman hit the McNally Robinson #1 Best Sellers List in Winnipeg for the week of November 22, 2015! I hope the following will give you a hint as to why… The good folks of Ladyslipper find Tessy invariably a bit peculiar. Most consider her eccentric ways sweet but harmless. With her Irish brogue and unorthodox attire, they accept and appreciate her herbal remedies and www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Many people who read More Than a Wise Woman begged for a sequel. And so came about Wise Woman’s Manor (Artistic Warrior Publishing, 2016) in which the quirky Wise Woman of Ashling Manor in Ladyslipper, Saskatchewan is back. Deep in the hearth of her beautiful home she continues to add a pinch of this and a dab of that to her healing potions and remedies filled with love. Tessy, newly engaged but still relying on her dear, departed husband for answers, has much to do in the next few months. There is a wedding to plan and a trip to her beloved Ireland. However, before that can happen, there are mysteries to solve, new relatives to meet, matches to be made, tales of long past lore to be shared and visitors to entertain. Yet, through it all, she still finds time to guide and educate people on the ways of a true Wise Woman. Yes, the doors are always open at Ashling Manor. However, unfortunately, that means the infamous town busybody, Mrs. Chamberlain, can pop in at any time. In both my books, I have included herbal, medicinal, culinary and magical recipes for you to try. I hope you take a look and find something you might like to whip up. Dare to dream and create your own magic! Blessed Be! Sadhguru’s tips on good parenting Parenting involves a certain amount of discretion. There is no one standard rule for all children. Different children may need different levels of attention, expressions of love and toughness. Suppose I was standing in a coconut garden and you asked me: “How much water per plant?” I would say: “At least 50 liters per plant.” When you go home, if you give 50 liters to your rose plant, it will die. You must see what kind of plant you have in your house and what it needs. 1. A Child is a Privilege It is a privilege that this child — this bundle of joy — has come through you and arrived in your house. Children are not your property; they do not belong to you. Just see how to enjoy, nurture and support them. Don’t try to make them an investment for your future. 2. Let Them Be Let them become whatever they have to become. Don’t try to mold them according to your understanding of life.

Your child need not do what you did in your life. Your child should do something that you did not even dare to think in your life. Only then will the world progress. 3. True Love People misunderstand that loving their children is to cater to whatever they ask for. If you get them everything they ask for, it is stupidity. When you are loving, you can do just whatever is needed. When you truly love someone, you are willing to be unpopular and still do what is best for them. 4. There’s No Hurry to Grow Up It is very important a child remains a child; there is no hurry to make him into an adult because you can’t reverse it later. When he is a child and he behaves like a child, it is wonderful. When he becomes an adult and behaves like a child, that is bad. There is no hurry for a child to become an adult. 5. It is Time to Learn, Not Teach

detail of Flutter Dance © Carol Breen — www.carolbreen.ca

What do you know about life to teach your children? A few survival tricks are the only things you can teach. Please compare yourself with your child and see who is capable of more joy. It’s your child, isn’t it? If he knows more joy than you, who is better qualified to be a consultant about life, you or him? When a child arrives it is time to learn, not teach. When there is a child, unknowingly you laugh, play, sing, crawl under the sofa and do all those things that you had forgotten to do. So it is time to learn about life.

6. Children Are Naturally Spiritual Children are very close to a spiritual possibility if only they are not meddled with. Generally either the parents, teachers, society, television — someone or other — meddles with them too much. Create an atmosphere where this meddling is minimized and a child is encouraged to grow into his intelligence rather than into your identity of religion, race, culture or nation. The child will become naturally spiritual without even knowing the word spirituality as it is natural for human intelligence to seek; the important thing to do is not provide standard answers. 7. Provide a Supportive and Loving Atmosphere If you set an example of fear and anxiety, how can you expect your children to live in joy? They will also learn the same thing. The best thing you can do is to create a joyous and loving atmosphere. 8. Maintain a Friendly Relationship Stop imposing yourself on the child and create a strong friendship rather than being a boss. Don’t sit on a pedestal and tell the child what he or she should do. Place yourself below the child so that it is easy for them to talk to you. 9. Avoid Seeking Respect Love is what you seek with your children, isn’t it? But many parents say: “You must respect me.” Yes, you came a few years early, are bigger in body and you know a few survival tricks, but in what way are you a better life than your child?

10. Make Yourself Truly Attractive A child is influenced by so many things — television, neighbors, teachers, school and a million other things. He will go the way of whatever he finds most attractive. As a parent, you have to make yourself in a way that the most attractive thing he finds is to be with the parents. If you are a joyous, intelligent and wonderful person, he won’t seek company anywhere else. For anything, he will come and ask you. If you are genuinely interested in giving your children a good upbringing, you should first transform yourself into a peaceful, loving and blissful human being.

Biofeedback retrains ADD/ADHD by Norma J. Hope Certified Biofeedback Specialist

cutting out sugar and processed foods and started using essential oils.

When I witness the instrumental changes Biofeedback has helped a client achieve, I feel very privileged to be a part of it - especially when they’ve been “labeled” ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and/or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

Then last year, she brought him for Biofeedback Stress Reduction Therapy. It retrains stress reactivity on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level, sending homeopathic frequencies through your body’s electrical systems with bands on your wrists, ankles and head. We use numerous combinations of the 11,000 different frequencies and 850 different program screens to retrain all layers (on all four levels of health) relating to a specific issue or generally. Reducing toxicity in the physical body caused by emotions like frustration, etc., is focused on, in combination with stabilizing the endocrine system (fight, flight or freeze). We also balance the brainwave states using specific Biofeedback programs and retrain particular parts of the brain itself for ADHD/ADD.

ADD and ADHD are not hereditary or genetic. These challenges happen due to the individual experiencing specific emotional “conflicts” according to German New Medicine. The same type of “conflicts” may occur throughout the generational family dynamic but each individual has events that happen to them personally and specifically in their own timeline. ADD is the result of two “separation conflicts” happening at the same time. For example, the loss of TWO people in a divorce or two incidents together (a divorce and then moving away from family/friends). Or a child goes to school before emotionally ready (unwanted separation from mom/dad) and then once among the kids/teachers, the child may experience being intimidated or feeling overwhelmed (again experiencing “separation” or wanting to get away). ADHD is the result of two different “conflicts” happening at the same time: a “separation conflict” (I want to be with that person or I really don’t want to be with that person), AND a “motor conflict” (feeling stuck or trapped).

Blue Bedouin © Carol Pylypow

The symptoms can be very frustrating for an adult, but when it’s a child involved, it’s heartbreaking. The whole family is affected as the parents helplessly watch their child struggle. These symptoms (whether an adult or child) include constant inattention or lack of focus, shutting down (disassociation) or hyperactivity (can’t sit still, fidgety), an inability to finish/complete/organize tasks/ assignments, anxiety and more.

Specific emotions requiring balancing/ retraining for ADHD are frustration, self-doubt, power, denial, desire for things to be different, psychic pain, bargaining, confusion, resentment, anxiety and more. Then we go into “Super Learning” programs to boost memory, comprehension and more. Biofeedback has changed Thomas (now 12-years-old) and he is loving his life again. And his mother is ecstatic that she doesn’t get called into the principal’s office anymore!

“Norma has simply changed my son’s life! I refuse to give my son drugs for his ADHD and Biofeedback has become a cornerstone in dealing with the disorder. A change in diet and Biofeedback has turned his life around! He can now focus so much better - so much so that even his teachers noticed! When the change is noticeable by external parties, you know it’s working!” Norma Hope is a Certified Biofeedback Specialist, Colon Hydrotherapist, Lymph Therapist, Microcurrent Therapist, Life Coach, NeuroAcoustic Sound Therapist, and more… Call 780-477-1100 or go to www.lifesynergyinc.ca Note: This information is for educational purposes only. Supporting the release of specific past trauma “conflicts” is a necessity for retraining and healing many issues. One of my clients, Thomas, was your average boy until grade two (age 8). When I asked his mother when the ADHD appeared, she emphatically declared that it was in grade two when he was being ridiculed/intimidated by a teacher. After that he didn’t want to go to school. This is a “separation conflict” and “motor conflict” occurring simultaneously. He just shut down. His mother didn’t want him on drugs so she changed his diet,

Endings and beginnings with Death by Skye MacLachlan Tarot Teacher & Reader

that I’ve been working with the tarot, only once has it represented an actual physical death.

I recently purchased a used tarot deck. That’s something I wouldn’t normally do but this deck is out of print. As I looked through the cards, to my disappointment one card was missing. Can you guess which one? Yes, the Death card.

Usually the Death card comes as a helpful guide when we’ve lost our way and points us in the right direction. It tells us that it’s okay to let go of the old ways of the past and to begin something new. From the moment of our birth, the loving spirit of Death is always with us, guiding and supporting us to continue to grow and learn.

I want to begin with a personal story… I’ve always loved crows. This year I decided to put food and water out for them under a big tree, mainly so I could enjoy watching them interact. However, several months later, a neighbor explained to me that all the birds (my offering was attracting) were terrifying his tiny dogs and pooping on his fence. He asked me if I would consider stopping the feedings? I felt horrible. I didn’t want to disappoint the birds who were now used to my daily offerings but I also didn’t want to be a bad neighbor. I prayed for guidance and consulted the tarot, asking for a decisive one card answer. The card I received was Death. I breathed a sigh of relief for such clear guidance. It was time to end the bird feedings. The next morning when the birds were calling out for their food, I pulled a card for the day and Death came again. Getting that card uplifted me and gave me the strength to shift my behavior. I also sent prayers that the birds would be guided to a new place with lots of food and water, a place more harmonious and welcoming of their presence.

If you’ve asked a specific question, the following are some ways that the Death card might answer. GENERAL: It’s time to let go… of life’s clutter, an old habit, or anything that’s depleting you. Don’t be afraid to ask for support from those who care about you. © Radiant Rider-Waite® Tarot by US Games Systems 2003

This happened as I was contemplating which card to write about for Mosaic and the missing Death card sealed the deal. I hope this article will demystify Death (major arcana card #13) and help you to honor its gifts and challenges.

RELATIONSHIPS: Have you outgrown your current relationship or worse, is it destructive to you? Remember that you deserve to be happy in your relationships. CAREER: If your work is no longer fulfilling and you’re just going through the motions, it’s time to seek a new job or career – maybe even return to school. MONEY: Honestly assess your financial situation and make the changes that are needed. This might mean being less miserly or conversely, sticking to a much needed budget. HEALTH: Make healthy living choices a priority and listen to what your body needs. SPIRITUALITY: Let yourself transform at the very core of your being.

When the Death card comes in a reading, release your grip on what is comfortable and familiar, and be willing to change. You will be rewarded with aliveness and peace. Contact her at skyedreamhorse@shaw.ca Note: This information is for educational purposes only. Thoroughly research all topics for yourself.

When the Death card shows up in a tarot reading it’s time to shift course, to choose a new path, to release an old habit and to welcome the winds of transformation. Is change frightening? Yes, sometimes it is… And sometimes it’s also exciting. As we look at the natural world around us, Mother Earth teaches us that all things change. There are endings and new beginnings everywhere in nature, as there also are in our personal lives. Does the Death card sometimes mean a literal physical death when it appears in a tarot reading? I got hooked on self realization by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist I have been fascinated with the idea of self realization since I first bumped into unknown aspects of myself in my mid-twenties. Situations that brought out both negative and positive traits in me left me feeling somewhat baffled, judgmental, frightened and curiously asking: “Is that me?”

One of the definitions for self realization is the fulfillment of one’s own potential. That is a good description of an endpoint but how does that happen? I am still on the journey, have made a lot of discoveries and have miles to go. But with three decades of travel behind me I feel that I can offer the following points to consider. From my perspective the desire for self realization should come with a warning that states: Before you go further on this journey please consider the following:

As long as I worked within a certain set of parameters, I was fine; I knew how to behave and all was well. But when my curiosity led me to explore outside those parameters I was not fine anymore. I was uncomfortable in my skin and didn’t know how to behave.

At that time when I asked the question: “Is that me?”, I didn’t even realize I had begun a much bigger journey on the road towards “knowing self.” I was simply trying to figure things out and find answers to both mundane and mystical questions.

• Can we develop potential without allowing ourselves to make mistakes, encounter our inner demons or self doubts? • Can we develop potential that leads towards self realization unless we are willing to embrace self honesty and acceptance of our good, bad, ugly and miraculous bits? • Be prepared to let go of self delusion. • Self acceptance and self compassion are not necessary but will make the journey easier. You will develop them in end. • Religious or spiritual leanings might bring you to this quest but will become a hindrance along the way. • A strong will and mind is a good starting place but they will become a hindrance along the way. • A soft heart and niceness is a starting point but it will become a hindrance along the way. • Knowing the difference between right and wrong is a good starting point but it will become a hindrance along the way. • A strong ego or a weak ego is a good starting point but it will become a hindrance along the way. • Knowing a lot is a good starting point but it will become a hindrance along the way. • The desire to fix and improve is a good starting point but it will become a hindrance along the way. • Do not start this journey if you don’t want to change. • The ability to laugh at yourself in a good natured way will make this journey easier. • If at this point you are thinking: “If all of the above will become a hindrance why bother?” re-consider the point: “Don’t start the journey if you don’t want to change.” • Every time you think: “I have arrived” you have simply encountered a new level of discovery. Move forward with beginner’s mind. If you are still reading this list – please proceed and have fun with the journey! A woman making peace with herself by Oksana Zhelisko

Photo © Kristine McGuinty

“Let us not look back in anger, nor forward in fear, but around in awareness.” – James Thurber Intermission © Oksana Zhelisko

Over this past year a lot of changes occurred that made me stop and reflect on my life and my goals. I have realized that when I live in the past or future, I miss out on the freedom and peace in the now. All the anger, fear, jealousy, envy, worry and doubt – these are all things that can feel real to us at the time we are experiencing them. However, most of the time they are just in our mind and just excuses to hold onto the past or to live in tomorrow. The most important thing is to really feel our feelings and not avoid them or try to suppress them in any way. I have discovered that there is a certain mystery and freedom in the present. By inhaling every moment of now, seeking, asking and discovering, I am creating my future and refusing to stay in the past.

In my new series, entitled “State of Mind,” I am telling the story of one as an artist, a woman and a wondering soul. It is a minute, an hour, a lifetime journey of ups and downs, of happiness and joy, or sometimes frustration and sorrow. It is a story about a woman making peace with herself, about her road to inspiration and lust for life, because she is a woman. Con Amore

(Italian) With heart and soul

We are here to learn lessons by Connie Brisson I was about five years old when I had my first inkling of the concept of “God.” We didn’t go to church often, but I can remember coming home on a Sunday afternoon being confused and very scared by what I had learned that day in church about God. I can recall walking around the yard on our farm in a frightened frenzy, trying to figure out: “Who is this guy, God? Why is he doing this to all of us?” I thought it was some crazy, cruel game he was playing with us, trying to see who would win and who would lose.

Like all of you, life has not always been kind to me. Parts of my life have been great and I am so thankful for those times. But there have been other parts that were so painful, where I can’t even face the betrayal of another person I loved so dearly – never mind easily forgive them. And at those times, I’ve felt like the biggest victim in the world. How could this happen to me? But now I have a greater understanding of why we are all here - to learn tremendous soul lessons. And if I’m honest, when I look back on all the relationships in my life, I actually KNOW the lesson, with each person, each time, that I came here to learn.

When you grow up thinking that life is a game, one where there are winners and losers, one where you believe God is on your side, or not, based on how good or bad you are that day or week or month or year, you ultimately live each day from a place of survival and competition.

One of the best things I learned was the concept of reincarnation. It just made so much sense to me that we aren’t here for one life. This life isn’t a test or a game; it’s a process. We are here to learn, to evolve our souls (especially our understanding about love) and lifetime after lifetime we purposely come back, by choice, to learn different things. It makes so much sense to me. When I first read Your Soul’s Plan (Discovering the Real Meaning of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born) by Robert Schwartz (Frog Books, 2007), I was like a kid in a candy store. OMG… What if I planned all the major events in my life? What if every time someone loved me, or hurt me, I chose it (on purpose) to grow and to learn a deep lesson? That idea softens my heart because it means that I approved of every “good” or “bad” thing in my life long before they ever happened; I agreed to this – every minute of it. That gives me compassion not only for myself, but also for the other people that I feel have wronged or really hurt me.

I think I’m blessed to live in a time and place where I’ve been able to contemplate God (and all that means) from a more knowledgeable place and in a more personal way. Thankfully, in my 30’s, I discovered a different concept of God than anything I ever learned at the churches I had been to.

Sometimes I have discovered this from my dreams, different meditations, tarot and past life regressions, as well as other soul searching work. And it actually isn’t that complicated. It usually revolves around the big crisis moment that defines/decides your relationship with someone else. I learned a very tough lesson with one relative after a betrayal. I was devastated by what happened because I had loved and trusted her so much. I just didn’t see it coming. But, after I started to heal and get clarity, I realized I had ignored some intuitive insights and warning bells that had come to me as “whispers” in a few different situations with her. My lesson was to listen to my inner knowing and not brush it off as silly or insignificant. It has been my willingness to be curious about why each big event has happened to me (and also be curious about the key players involved – why him or her?) that has allowed me to grow and change in ways I never could have if I had automatically limited myself to being a victim of “life.” If you believe that life is all random, then it honestly is (because that is the lens you will view your life through and therefore it will be your truth). If you believe that we are guided by a greater intelligence, a greater Spirit, then there is a saving grace built into that which allows for growth, learning and compassion. I’m here, just like you, learning my lessons every day. But now that I know that I was “in” on the planning of them, I want to get the big “Aha” about them as soon as I can, and not waste time being a victim or asking: “Why me?” Now my intent is to learn my lessons easily, with grace and compassion… That’s my new prayer to Spirit, to God.
