In this Mosaic… different places in his body and it was a roller coaster of highs and lows. There was a very low point when he was in ICU, so sick, but then he recovered and seemed to be doing well. At his 46th birthday, just eight months before he died, he looked wonderful, healthy and happy. Yet by Christmas that year, he was so weak and it was the first time that I believed that he would actually die and just two months later, he did.

boccabellaphoto.com

Since then I’ve often wondered what happened inside of him during that time, emotionally and mentally, that allowed the cancer to ultimately win. Why do some people survive it, against the greatest of odds, while others don’t? I know that one of the greatest contributors to ill health is our false beliefs about ourselves and the world. Our deeply held beliefs about ourselves, and about life, can kill us or save us. I was having a bit of a health crisis of my own when I finally decided to go see Tammie a few years ago. After a lengthy consultation, she gave me some ‘powders’ and drops to take. The powders are taken just before going to sleep at night. When I took the first one, I knew I had found something powerful for me. by Connie Brisson I was in my late teens when I recognized a pattern I was experiencing (from the time I was little, up to that point of my life) regarding traumas - both emotional and physical. I noticed that when a trauma occurred in my life, it would happen again and again, in different ways (and at different times) until the issue was flat-lined and I was at peace with it or it had resolved itself inside of me in some way. So when ‘bad times’ came, although I was scared, another part of me wondered if this was the time that would resolve that particular issue or trauma. Before knowing anything about energy or karma or any of that, I recognized that life had a way of helping me deal and come to peace with my demons. Moving forward many years, my familiarity with traumas (and the dissolving of them) made me resonate with articles in Mosaic written by Tammie Quick (doctor of homeopathy and Heilkunst medicine, www.quick-health.ca). What appealed to me about the Heilkunst (homeopathic) medical system, is that it takes patients on a journey back through time to treat various physical and emotional shocks and traumas (deaths, surgeries, accidents, divorce, etc.) in the reverse order that they occurred in our lives, using homeopathic medicines to remove the negative imprint that they’ve left behind. This is important because these traumatic events can ‘turn on’ the symptoms of inherited diseases ‘gifted’ to us by our parents and ancestors.

That night I dreamed the whole night about going back in time, into my different lives, to erase traumas that were holding me back in this life. I must have gone through at least 20 significant lifetimes, each one dissolving gracefully as the trauma of it was erased. Then I arrived at one last lifetime in which I was a North American Indian. No matter how it tried, the life would not be erased and then I saw that it must stay with me. I’m not sure why. I haven’t discovered the reason yet. But when I woke up the next morning, I was elated. I felt like so much crap had been energetically lifted from me. And although that has never happened to me again, in all the times I’ve seen Tammie since, I’m thankful to have another way to help myself when I am in times of trauma or need. For me, there is something magical about how these powders/drops/cures help me (although, of course, each person’s experience will be unique). The guest speaker for our next Mosaic Mystic Meeting is Tammie Quick, who will be explaining the healing process of the Heilkunst (Homeopathic) Medical System. If you’ve had trauma in your life, you’ll want to join us on MARCH 5 to learn more about how you can help heal yourself. Avoiding surgery with Heilkunst by Tammie Quick DMH, DHHP Joe was a 14-year-old teen scheduled to have his gallbladder removed. Yes, you read that correctly! Because of misinformation about what constitutes a healthy diet largely aimed at minors by the food industry - more and more young people are developing illnesses that used to occur in middle age.

Looking Through You © Bernadette McCormack

And even though Joe played on a hockey team and participated in regular physical activity, he had been overweight for most of his life. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I am bigger than most kids my age.” Joe told me. “That’s why I decided to lose weight by following the ‘cabbage soup’ diet.”

accidentally let it slip that Joe was up pretty late on Facebook most nights, while his parents were oblivious and asleep in their own room. And not coincidentally, that first attack also happened on the last day of the cabbage soup diet. One might argue that it was the diet and not the grounding that triggered the gallbladder attack. But it’s important to consider that thousands of people have tried this diet or one like it, but not all of them ended up with painful gallstones. Gallbladder disease, like most illness requires an ‘exciting factor’ to turn on the symptoms. Because of Joe’s usual eating habits, he already had stones in his gallbladder and likely in his liver. The liver and gallbladder are where the energy of anger is stored in the physical body. So the cabbage soup diet allowed the perfect conditions for the already present stones to get inflamed (and for formation of new stones) when Joe was upset by his cousin’s seeming betrayal. In the Heilkunst system of medicine, we treat the cause of illness with carefully chosen homeopathic medicines and with changes to daily regimen. Few surgeons tell patients of the number of folks whose attacks were not relieved by removing the gallbladder. Neither are they told that unless they take bile salts with all meals for the rest of their life, they will not be able to metabolize fats and therefore will be severely nutrient deficient. And if you think that means being naturally thin, think again. Nutrient deficiencies most often lead to weight gain, as the body longs for all that it needs and keeps signaling for ‘more food’.

You’ve probably heard of this diet. On the surface, it sounds healthy enough with lots of vegetables and very low fat/calories. But it is so low in calories and fat that it is not healthy. Plus it has potential side effects such as gallbladder disease. While I’m all for following healthy eating to achieve your perfect weight, crash diets like this one do not contain enough fat to allow the gallbladder to sufficiently empty its bile. Retained bile in the gallbladder leads to acute stone formation, which leads to horrific pain and an invitation on a surgeon’s dance card!

Joe’s determination amazed me! He’s gluten free and severely restricts other grains and sugar… and he’s been rewarded with a ‘normal’ sized 14-year-old body. He was pain-free and off all medications a week after our appointment, and has kept his beautiful gallbladder. While Joe waited for the hospital to call, he and his parents decided to find out if Heilkunst had anything to offer. In addition to learning that Joe had a low self-image because of his weight, and that he did consume a lot of sugar and grains, I also found out that his younger cousin had recently moved in next door. Joe loved spending time with his cousin, but he sometimes felt like he didn’t have a choice about it, and his parents insisted that Joe walk him to and from school every day. It turns out, that three weeks before Joe’s first gallbladder attack, he’d been grounded because his cousin had

I was healed by eliminating foods

Photograph by France Allard-McGee

Within a week I remember waking up in shock and awe at the realization that I wasn’t in pain! The longer I drank green smoothies, eliminated wheat, corn, dairy, soy, peanuts, all processed food, eating only wild or organic sources of meat, fish and poultry, the better I felt. I was highly motivated, not only because of what I was seeing with the turnaround of my own health, but to also see that my daughter’s long term allergies, asthma, lethargy and unexplained weight issues were also responding to this NEW way of eating! Finally we had gotten to the root of our undiagnosed health concerns.

by Laura Jacques-Gilmour I am so grateful for another wonderful year on this planet! Needless to say this has not always been my experience as a mere five years ago I found myself giving away all my cherished possessions, thinking that I needed to make my passing easier on my family by doing so. Those were dark times. I was suffering from severe, debilitating muscle pain, exhaustion, memory loss and the scary symptoms of MS. My medical doctor said that (according to my bloodwork) I was fine - just eat better and get some exercise. He prescribed some antidepressants which I immediately adversely reacted to and then came the suggestion of Prednisone… NO WAY. At age 45 my life, or lack thereof, was like a nightmare as I downed eight or more extra strength Advil liquid gels a day, laying on the couch watching my neighbors coming and going as they LIVED their lives. I rarely left the house and when I did it was strategically planned as I never knew when my legs were going to seize up. My body was at war!

In the beginning (due to my health issues) we ate very bland, plain whole foods. Although my health was improving this was hard on my husband as he had been married to a scratch cook FOODIE and had been used to 20+ years of great tasting meals! The McDonald receipts starting showing up in his pockets on laundry day and I knew that I needed to get back in the kitchen and start reinventing our family’s favorite recipes. I took my 30+ years of scratch cooking experience and transformed, not only my pantry and recipes, but my family’s health! I was so inspired that I decided to create a glutenfree cookbook so many people could benefit from it. I totally immersed myself in the process of naturally converting our family’s favorite traditional meals, while adding appetizers, desserts, baking and beverages - all that would be easy to prepare with healthy ingredients that followed the guidelines and teachings I had learned from my Functional Medical Practitioner. What started out as a mom’s labour of love has become my gift to the masses. My cookbook, Gluten-Free gets Good was published in April 2014 and specializes in ‘shockingly delicious’ gluten / dairy / corn / soy / peanutfree cuisine. In May 2012 I decided I could no longer go on like this and that I would attempt one last time to turn my health around. I found a Functional Medical Practitioner (FMP) in Sherwood Park, AB, had a complete blood panel run and waited for the results. After the review my FMP looked at me with compassion and said: “I have no idea how you are getting through the day.” My progesterone and testosterone levels were low, meaning I was perimenopausal. I was anemic and had adrenal fatigue caused by stress and food sensitivities. I was placed on a 21 day elimination food plan that was supported with vitamins and minerals.

The value of a life coach by Jodie Hebbard Life Coach

intentioned, put doubt in your mind about what is ‘realistic’ or ‘rational’ or ‘possible’.

My story started just over 10 years ago when I began working for a leading surgery facility. Within five short years, I had a successful career as the Regional Director and with that came the corner office, a nice salary and plenty of respect, responsibility, stress and long hours.

It’s my job to help you break through all those limiting barriers. All of those reasons, fears, doubts and obstacles are the exact reason you need a coach to guide you through this new unknown territory.

After another five years, still feeling unfulfilled, I knew that there had to be more. I requested a three-month sabbatical, hoping the time away would help me determine what to do with my future. During my time off, I began to work with a life coach. I thought long and hard about the investment but came to the conclusion that I simply needed help (because I had struggled for so long, I knew I couldn’t do it alone). I quickly felt at ease with her knowing that she had gone through the exact same situation as I was in (having a well-respected career, but needing one that made me feel like I was really making a difference in the world.) For the first time, I felt I wasn’t alone in feeling this way and that someone really understood me. It was through our sessions together that I gained the courage I needed to commit to a major life change. I realized that I have a gift to offer and through our sessions together, I became clear that my gift is to help others struggling to find their gift/purpose in this world. This led me to becoming a Certified Coach. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life and I finally feel like I am living with a purpose and my true calling.

Peace From Within © Heather Brewster — www.heatherbrewster.com

By this point, I was 26-years-old and had complete financial freedom, my own house and was travelling the world. But despite all of these amazing benefits, something was still missing. I felt unfulfilled, but I couldn’t figure out why.

It’s actually during our first session together that my clients experience at least one ‘aha’ or breakthrough moment when they realize that their dream is possible by just exploring different ideas and possibilities. Many people, including myself, considered that first session the game changer. It was the moment that opened my eyes to the fact it was me and my beliefs that were allowing all of these fears and issues to stand in my own way. Your soul knows why it came here and my role as your life coach is to help you find that out and then help you make it happen. I’ll help you clear through all the clutter in your mind and find your own solutions (because you have all the answers inside of you). I ask the right questions to help you discover your truth and with each new awareness and ‘aha’, your new life will naturally unfold with grace and ease.

Helping you find creative solutions on how to make a living following your dreams AND be successful, is my job. I want you to succeed and live your dream life. That is my goal as your life coach. Jodie is a Certified Life Coach who offers various signature coaching programs including VIP Coaching Days for those really looking to commit to change. For more information go to www.JodieHebbard.com

Are you someone in a ‘great’ career, but just like me, want something more? What’s stopping you from having your dream job? Usually it’s fear and a big part of that has to do with concerns around money and/or time. “Can I really make a living doing what I love? Do I have enough time/energy to start this dream now, with a mortgage and children to care for too?” Often you’re also surrounded by friends and family who, though well www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Changing my life with ThetaHealing® by Lynn Vollmer ThetaHealing® Instructor Two years ago I read an article in Mosaic Magazine that changed my life forever. I would even go so far to say that it saved my life! I was in an extremely dark place that I didn’t know how to get out of it. I hated my life and I truly felt that this ‘world’ was the worst place to live. To me it was nothing but cold and very harsh.

It’s easy for doctors, family and friends to hear your story and tell you: “You shouldn’t feel like that. It’s not your fault.” But to actually turn it around is a totally different challenge. Knowing I couldn’t go on like this anymore I quit my full time job and I started searching. I was searching for myself because I didn’t know who I was anymore. I was looking for the happy person I was before the custody case. During this time I read many spiritual books, mainly by Doreen Virtue and Wayne Dyer. I went to some seminars and took an energy healing class. I was feeling

I carried so much despair and hate toward the judicial system and my ex-husband for making my children suffer those five long years. Any trust I had (in the people around me, in myself and in God), I lost in those five years of battling for my children. I had so much anger at God for letting this happen to not only my children, but also for what had happened to me as a child. Finally, after five long years, we won the custody case and moved to Edmonton but then I fell into a major depression. I was in such deep emotional pain. I didn’t know how to let it go so I started drinking alcohol to numb myself. My children were not the same happy, trusting kids they once were. I could see their emotional pain which made mine worse. The guilt, the remorse, the anger, the resentment, the shame and the hate was consuming me. I was spiritually broken! I wanted nothing to do with life anymore. I had nothing left to give. I was empty, void of energy, void of emotion. I truly believed the world, my family and my children would be better off without me. I prayed to God to take me in my sleep. (Even as I write this it’s hard for me to believe that ‘that’ person was me.)

I was suffocating from all the guilt I was carrying about custody arrangements for my children and battling through a five year custody case that should have lasted one. For years I had to witness and bear the grief of watching my children cry, clinging to me, begging me not to make them go to their dad’s (which I had to legally allow). For a mother I cannot tell you how hard it was placing my children in an environment knowing it was abusive, emotionally and physically.

better but knew there was still something more. One day I came across an article in Mosaic Magazine where the writer talked about a custody battle and how she believed things got resolved largely due to the ThetaHealing® she was undergoing. I knew nothing of ThetaHealing so I read everything there was to read on it. For the first time in a long time I felt hope! As I read about ThetaHealing my cells were literally zinging and I KNEW in every bone in my body that ‘this’ was it. This was going to heal me. It was divine timing as ThetaHealing® beginner classes were about to be taught in Edmonton. While waiting for my classes I thought it would be a good idea to experience a ThetaHealing session. But to my disappointment, after it, I didn’t feel any different. I’m not sure what I expected but it wasn’t that. The practitioner asked me some questions, she did some releasing, we did a meditation www.MosaicMagazine.ca

and then it was over. I didn’t feel anything - no magic, no razzle, no dazzle. However, the next day I did feel a change. It was incredible! For the first time I felt a small amount of joy, something I hadn’t felt in a long time. As the days went by, the feeling grew stronger and I could finally see light; my darkness didn’t seem so dark anymore. We even noticed a big change in my daughter’s emotional well-being and it wasn’t because she had done anything different. It was because I was changing! I really felt like my healing journey had begun after taking those first three ThetaHealing classes in December 2012. They woke me up from a deep slumber. I realized I had so many belief systems blocking me that I couldn’t see truth. To me ThetaHealing was the best ‘drug’ going so with the support of my family I decided to take the more advanced levels ThetaHealing had to offer and left for a six week intense healing journey. My husband described me as glowing when I came back after those six weeks. I had been able to release so much of that darkness and bring in positive and loving light that it changed me as a person. I not only learned how to forgive my parents, but also my ex-husband, the judicial system, myself, God and the list goes on. I learned how to release the anger, the hate, the resentment, the shame, the guilt and all the emotional pain and trauma that I had been carrying for so long, which began in childhood when I had been abused by my father. I blamed God for not protecting me and I thought I wasn’t good enough for my mother to protect me from my father’s abuse.

be abused to learn these lessons. With these limiting beliefs gone, I stopped the pattern of people trying to abuse or take advantage of me. The beliefs I now hold in my subconscious mind are the ones I want and choose to have work for me, rather than against me. The more belief systems I released, the easier it was for me to see truth and let go and let God. I was then divinely guided to take my ThetaHealing Instructors and received my ThetaHealing Masters in August 2013. That extra time gave me greater clarity and more confidence not only in myself as a person but also as a teacher. I used to be the person who always took a back seat to let others lead and here I was about to embark on a journey of leading others. ThetaHealing not only gave me my life back, but it gave me a future. My life is so much better than I can ever have imagined it would be. The darkness that felt all consuming is gone thanks to ThetaHealing. I released the negative baggage that no longer served me and kept the good part of who I was and infused it by ten. I am loving life and I am helping make the world a more positive and loving place one person at a time. Thank you Mosaic Magazine for printing the story that helped me find my life’s purpose and ThetaHealing for making it all possible for me and my family. This is my life and I choose to create a masterpiece! Lynn is a ThetaHealing® Master & Instructor, offering workshops and private sessions. The abuse I suffered was difficult for me to let go at first. I held on to it to prove how strong I was and to keep myself safe. During a ThetaHealing session I found I had the belief system that “my abuse is my badge of honor” and “I wear my abuse as a badge of honor.” I kept abuse trinkets hidden throughout my digestive system as little treasures. For me to let it go, I had to work on ‘trust’ and ‘safety’. The only way I was able to release my limiting beliefs in the ThetaHealing® session was by first recognizing the things I had learned through the abuse and from my mother not protecting me. What people learn through their abuse is individual for everyone. For me I learned how to be strong and trust with discernment, how to protect myself and my children, how to use my voice, how to energetically read people (yet at the time I didn’t know that’s what I was doing), how to love and accept myself, how to forgive others and the list goes on. Upon realizing/claiming these lessons (while in the ThetaHealing session), I downloaded them into me on a cellular level. Once I knew that I had these lessons inside, I was free to release the limiting belief system, along with the anger and the resentment towards my mother and father. I was free to be strong, trust people with discernment, love me for me, keep myself and my family safe without having to www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Natural Healing I often wake up at night and feel ‘spirits’ in my room. I believe they’re the spirits of my two dead brothers, trying to comfort me, especially after I’ve had a hard day. However, honestly, I just get so scared that I’ll stay awake for hours, which affects my work the next day. Regardless of what’s waking me up, I’d really like some natural ways to calm myself down so I won’t be frightened and can fall back asleep again. What can I do to help myself at those times? You could utilize an essential oil diffuser for this purpose or you could blend this mixture with a carrier oil and rub it on your neck, chest and upper back. If you have lavender or geranium oil on hand you could start with either or both of these to help relax and induce sleep. Try a drop or two on your pillow or on a Kleenex near you. Less common, but effective in inducing deeper sleep, are both Vetiver and Valerian essential oils. Healing our soul with Ayahuasca by Sarah Salter-Kelly Spiritual Healer As a tool for healing the soul, Ayahuasca is like none on this planet. She is wild, untamed and unpredictable. Tearing down the false constructs of our reality, she reveals what is true at the heart of consciousness. We then have a choice (from an aware state of being) about the actions, thoughts and beliefs we invest our power.

trauma, being alone and loss, keep us from believing in the light we hold within, preventing us from creating new actions that are sourced in truth. This means that you will face each of these at some level on your journey, so they no longer hold power over you and limit your life’s experience. In this retreat your physical body is cleansed externally through mud baths, fruit scrub and flower baths. Your diet is simple and portions are small, creating space within for healing. Every morning we gather for a circle and the afternoons are spent in meditation and silence. Evenings are spent in ceremony. Each aspect of the process is set up to support your sensory function and engage your capacity to feel and experience.

Once a year I bring 10 people to the Amazon of Peru to participate in a 12 day holistic Ayahuasca process, where diet, meditation, circle and ceremony are combined to facilitate healing. It is a very difficult journey, requiring courage, commitment and inner discipline.

This gives you a great opportunity to look at your triggers and reactions, taking ownership and responsibly for them, so you may change what doesn’t serve you. You learn that your sense of inner peace is not dependent on outside variables, which are beyond your control, rather a choice you may make within.

Ayahuasca

The Amazon takes us right out of our comfort zone; a perfect environment for soul healing. It is hot. There are lots of bugs (these may get into your room/clothes/bag). You are weak from a simple diet. You participate in ceremony that makes you purge from both ends and you are shown through visions or feelings what is unresolved within your being. You are with a group, some whom you may like, others who might drive you crazy.

The Ayahuasca brew is a purgative, hallucinogenic plant medicine, which is drank in an evening ceremony (five in total) with the guidance of a traditional Ayahuascero. Throughout the ceremony medicine songs are sung (called Icaros) to guide your journey. What you are throwing up is the history of false action and toxins. This might last the whole night for the first few ceremonies and is really hard. What you will see or feel is the connection to what is unresolved within your soul. Through repeated ceremonies it is possible to engage the observer within, and witness how ridiculous the beliefs, patterns and fear are which have prevented you from loving yourself in the past. This generates a new conscious pattern of health, which stimulates actions and beliefs sourced from love.

You are able to sense through the process of this journey how deeply connected you are to the Divine, supported from all directions, inside and out. The great Mother is alive and is here to help you, in all ways. Sarah specializes in healing personal struggles, imbalance and trauma through ceremony and connection to the Sacred. She’s available for private sessions in Pigeon Lake or Edmonton at Healing Connections. 780-3149150, www.SarahSalterKelly.com, waywardhealer.blogspot.ca Note: This information is for educational purposes only. In the west we have the idea that we can buy an end product in our spiritual quest. Ayahuasca teaches us otherwise. In order to fully receive her medicine you need to be completely detached from the outcome of what you think it should look like, and be open to receiving what she and your body’s highest consciousness have deemed is needed. This means faith, trust and surrendering to the process. Our consciousness is driven and controlled by thoughts, patterns and actions that are sourced in fear or love. The fear is what we come to the Amazon to heal. Fear of disappointment, unmet expectations, judgment, history of

Bridge of transformation - the heart The ‘now’ year is in process. Changes are everywhere, in every country, in every part of us. We are witnessing the rise in consciousness of the human race. We are rising to free ourselves from the shackles of male hyperdominance, injustice, inequality, repression, oppression, hatred, discrimination, war and violence. Although separate individuals, we are all connected. As we each seek balance and become more whole, the entire race changes. We truly do create our own worlds and by extension, our World. As our consciousness evolves, we are looking… looking for the central core, the “truth of who-we-really-are,” individually and as a race. The answer has been there all along, hiding in plain sight, with clues everywhere. In every religion, it has been identified, glorified, held out for its followers to see and know. It is represented in sacred icons and images, even pointed to by holy ones, masters, teachers, the exalted messengers of the Creator. It is clearly marked as the center. It is the heart. In the physical body it is the first organ formed in the developing embryo. It is active and functioning within a few weeks of conception. It radiates the most massive electromagnetic energy in the body. We have always known it is essential to the continuation of individual life. The requirements of each cell are met through circulation of oxygen and fuel, hormones, protective components of the immune system, biochemicals made by the body, and even replacement cells that repair and rejuvenate through the rivers of blood we call arteries and veins. In English, we even re-use its name to identify the central source of warmth and nourishment in our dwellings: the hearth.

The nine chakras (like spinning wheels) in the core of the subtle body can be divided into two distinct sections. The lower or earth section has a chakra located in the earth (12-18" below the feet), at the base of the torso, below the navel and at the solar plexus. The upper or cosmic section, includes a chakra 12-18" above the crown of the head, at the crown, in the middle of the forehead between the eyebrows and one at the throat. Joining the cosmic and earth chakras is a bridge: the heart chakra, located in the middle of the chest beneath the sternum. It is the accurately declared center of e-motion (energy in motion) - that singular characteristic that defines us as human.

The ‘Sacred Heart’ is the repository of our pain body, the bridge of transformation between earth and heaven, the temple within us, our true connection to Creator, the source of our ability to give and receive love, and to experience joy, sorrow, grief, desire, passion.

Our heart is protected from overwhelming situations by ‘aspects’ (like computer programs constructed by the subconscious mind) that enable us to survive traumatic events. As our consciousness expands these ‘aspects’ protecting us, often no longer serve us. The wounds (ancient or fresh) that necessitated them can be healed through hypnotic regression to the origin of the wounding. Healing can also occur through opening the heart in trust and safety in an amplified field where it can heal itself. This practice is called Heart Intelligence. As we achieve increased wholeness and balance through the heart, we achieve more of our human potential, and our world will change too. Creating a living truth I’ve experienced it with clients and I’ve lived it. We’ve all had a goal, affirmation or intention that we think about daily - yet it never comes to pass. It’s vital to realize that Spirit can only give to the human, what the human can ‘accept’. If there is a part of you that doesn’t fully believe or isn’t able to accept your goal, affirmation or intention completely, then it will not happen. The conscious mind and negative ego both tend to distort or even destroy positive information/ affirmations that you give yourself (because of past conditioning). During meditation, however, if a true state of relaxation and attunement with your spirit is achieved, one can bypass the brain (skipping the five human senses) and go directly to your higher consciousness - the part of you that CAN make the change. Here’s something to try when you are introducing a new and positive suggestion to your mind (anything you want to change in yourself). First envision yourself on a trampoline carrying the positive suggestive thought, affirmation, or information. Then bounce up past the conscious mind, the five senses, dodging the negative ego and rise directly into the subconscious mind which is linked up with your innerself, soul, spirit. This way you can open up and truly accept your goal or declaration, at which point your spirit/power can create or assist in the positive change. The greater the desired change, the more time and effort must be put forth. It is important to seek improvement each day, but if you ever slip up, be forgiving.

hundreds) times more significant and impactful. The practitioner guides you through visualizations and brings in positive suggestions, and all you have to do is accept. Once you accept it’s up to you to stand up for your wise choice and follow through with it, creating a living truth, for you. Also, one of the most crucial components of a transpersonal or spiritual approach to hypnotherapy is the fact that the practitioner brings you into touch with your true power and potential. You don’t need to wait to go into your own meditations to do so, because with a transpersonal approach there is an emphasis on touching the spirit-mind and power, which brings true healing into the body and mind. You can envision it as a crystal pyramid inside your mind where your spirit-self resides. Once you enter this crystal pyramid, dramatic changes can be made and you are then able to bring that change and energy back into your waking consciousness and manifest them into your reality. With my personal clientele I’ve seen sincerely dramatic results. Individuals with anxiety, depression, clinging to past experiences and living in patterns of pain, make a complete change in their lives and become masters of their realities. Even if some individuals do not experience a full metamorphosis, everybody who commits to hypnotherapy sessions (and doing learned meditation techniques in between sessions) receives some level of positive change or benefit.

There are more details and techniques to go deeper on the topic, but for now I profoundly hope this information can help make a true change in your life. Attuning with the part of me that is Spirit is second nature, but for a time it was not. And for many clients (even committed meditation practisers) it is not either. Finding my life’s work by DeeAnne Riendeau It wasn’t until recently that I realized that many of my life’s trials and experiences have been extraordinary and key to helping me find my life’s work. When I was just five-years-old I had a near death experience. I choked on a round jawbreaker candy. My dad said: “You better go sit down before you choke” and as I turned to go sit, I started to choke. I could not breathe. I remember my dad grabbing me and starting adnominal thrusts while my mom rushed to call a neighbor who was a nurse (there was no 911 back in those days). After several minutes I went limp and then I had an out of body experience. I was floating right above my dad as he was kneeling over me, trying with all of his might to remove the jawbreaker from my throat. I could see my mom as she ran around in sheer terror and panic, asking the neighbor to get there NOW!

Although only five-years-old, I remember this clearly as if it were just yesterday. I didn’t feel any pain or any fear in this experience. I only felt calmness despite watching the chaos below me. Nothing seemed to matter. Obviously my dad saved my life that day. He used his thumb and popped that darn candy out of my throat. My whole face was black and blue from the force of his efforts. It took several days before the blood vessels in my face went back to normal and for my burning throat to reside, but despite my physically returning to ‘normal’ the rest of me was not the same nor would it ever be. I started to experience very lucid dreams which, due to my young age, would often concern my mom. I remember waking up one morning, telling her that a certain person had died; she looked at me in disbelief because that person HAD died the night before! As I grew older, I started to drift away from this heightened level of ‘knowing’ that I’d been experiencing. I had nobody to help me to embrace it and I really didn’t have a clue what it was. My parents were loving and supportive but I don’t think I was even able to communicate the depths of what I saw and knew.

At 19-years-old, I was an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) working at a plant site. Part of my role was relieving security personnel at their post for their breaks. One night a gentleman came and started talking to me. I had seen him before so he wasn’t a stranger to me but that night was different. He starting talking about things nobody had spoken to me about before, like the deeper reason to why we are all here, what our purpose is and what we each have to bring to the world. Our conversation (which lasted about 30 minutes) had such immense depth in that short time, that afterwards I could not get it out of my head. It was then that I started to remember - remember my ‘knowing’. It felt miraculous. I tried to track

him down on the work site but it was like he had never existed. Nobody else seemed to remember him and I never saw him again. Looking back, I believe he was a messenger of God. Our talk had given me a deeper sense about life and I knew most certainly there was something I had that I needed to share with the world. I just had to figure out how to do it! I’ve always known I wanted to help others, even at a young age (in Grade 4, I started a ‘Kids for Saving Earth Club’). After working for a couple years as an EMT, I wanted to continue my health care path and became a Dental Assistant. I quickly learned that speaking and mentoring was one of my strengths and began teaching in colleges throughout Alberta. I started a CPR and First Aid training company and thrived in the classroom setting. I continued on to a Health Administration degree where I discovered the gap between holistic care and existing medical care. This was when the many different pieces of my life started to come together. I had been sick a lot as a child and suffered from IBS most of my teens (nothing the doctors gave ever seemed to help me). Then in my 20’s, I learned about a Naturopathic Doctor, started a program he set me up on and was so grateful when it worked! That was just the beginning of my experience with holistic healing and it has done wonders for my life. Most recently, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. So I am once again on an exploratory journey to find out what really works to help me day to day, to feel full of energy and free from pain! It was because of all of these many experiences that I feel I was guided to one of my major life purposes developing a program, Your Holistic Earth, where people can benefit from a ‘whole health care system’ one that bridges the gap between holistic care and medical care. The goal of the program is to help those looking for guidance and support on their healing journeys, so we can work together to bring about a better quality of living. I created Your Holistic Earth to provide a safe place for people to find alternative and holistic health related services, products and information. It provides a safe space for anyone seeking to find information, guidance and support to whole healing and prevention. This program also supports the holistic community by providing networking, business and marketing opportunities. Your Holistic Earth is young but bursting with such love and brightness. I know what is being created will leave a deep impact on those who choose to utilize it. The door is open and I welcome you. I am so thankful for the journey I have been on thus far and for the opportunity to help as many people as I possibly can. This is my life’s work! DeeAnne Riendeau created a ‘whole health care program’ to help those looking for guidance and support on their healing journeys, as well as assisting the holistic community by providing networking, business and marketing opportunities. www.yourholisticearth.ca Note: This information is for educational purposes only. Secret for a wildly profitable business Most healers don’t start their business just to make money they start a business to do what they love. They consciously choose to live their passion full out! This is awesome because passion is the secret fuel to create a wildly profitable business. Passion in business is the fuel, the spark, the excitement, the enthusiasm that wakes you up in the morning and propels you forward. It is the fuel that makes your business thoroughly enjoyable and inspires you through doing whatever it takes to create your next level of success. My favourite part about passion is that it is magnetic. In the passionate state you draw the most clients to you and the maximum money. Passion makes you an unstoppable force as you get your work out to the world. In the beginning it’s easy for healers to keep the passion high. It’s new, exciting and they get to do work that’s way more fulfilling than their previous career. It’s a magical time! Most healers learn fairly quickly, however, that passion doesn’t guarantee money comes in and that there is action involved in building a thriving business. They often discover they also need to learn the practical side of business. They learn that there are specific actions to take to have potential clients find them and buy their services.

ways for potential clients to become clients. Learning and using the business skills of making money is important. Without this in place the amount of people they can help and the impact they can make goes down dramatically. You are meant to make money without losing your passion. You were drawn to do what you love and you are meant to love it. Sure, marketing and sales may not excite you the same way as using your most powerful gifts does. But don’t let that dampen your passion. There is a direct correlation between passion and sales once the foundational business pieces are in place. Passion is a necessary ingredient! You’re not meant to operate your business without it. Dancer Close Up © Janice Blaine — www.paintersblock.com

by Fia-Lynn Crandall Intuitive Business Consultant

No matter where you are on your journey to more money and a bigger impact in the world, choose passion now. I’ve seen that there are often deeper issues that stop healers from sustaining passion over time. For now, do what you can to be in your passion every day. Each morning, ask yourself: “What am I most passionate about today?” and let that fuel you!

Unfortunately this is where most healers begin to lose passion. For many healers, once business becomes about practical elements like marketing and selling, the once magical business often gets stuffed into a dull box. The wild and free passion that once was spilling over, now becomes reigned in and limited. Getting out of bed to jump into work doesn’t feel as inspiring anymore. This is tragic! Because the truth is, healers need to have ways for people to find out about their work and

How to lose weight without dieting I recently had a blog follower ask: “I understand that diets don’t work but what if I really do need to lose weight? Then what?” Since I value authentic advice, I decided to tell her my truth. I wanted to share my own experience in hopes it would provide her some helpful insight. I think I have a pretty healthy lifestyle. My body isn’t perfect. I’m a size 10, mostly wear a size ‘large’ and if I had to guess, I’d say I’m about 160 pounds. Being only 5' 4", I know that the doctor’s chart would tell me I’m overweight but I’m quite past those kinds of opinions now and I happen to like my body most of the time. What really matters to me is that I feel healthy, strong and vital. These past six years, since I decided to abandon weight-loss and dieting, my intention has been to create a lifestyle that is truly in alignment with my heart’s desires. I was clear that I wanted to live a life that included sandwiches, cheese, pasta, potato chips and so on. And therefore I also had to embrace that I would likely never be a size 6. I’m very okay with that. Today, I eat whatever I want. My food is balanced and I don't ‘x-nay’ anything out unless it’s my desire to. I tried to follow the rigid and restrictive rules of the weight-loss industry for years, denying myself at almost every turn. I listened to what the experts said I should do or not do in regards to diet and exercise and yet deep inside my heart I was screaming: “I DON’T want to do that!!! Please don’t make me do that!!!” But I would do it anyway, completely dismissing and overlooking my own inner voice.

Finally, the most challenging commitment was acceptance. I decided that I would accept my body, giving it over to God, trusting that if my body needed to be different, it would be. And that’s where I am today… far from perfect but just the way I am meant to be. If you are also struggling with similar issues, here’s my heartfelt advice: (1) Let go of the idea of weightloss and instead create a healthy and sustainable lifestyle that is in alignment with who you really are. (2) Feed your body and move your body in a way that feels right and good for you. (3) Surrender your size and your body shape to your Higher Power. (4) Instead of focusing on weight and size stay focused on how you want to feel everyday (strong, healthy, vital). (5) Become curious about your destructive behaviors. Make a commitment to learn why you do what you do with food. The Body Love Journey program is invaluable for that. (6) Make your emotional health a top priority. You may be using food as a way to avoid your feelings. Instead of trying to cover up your feelings, find a supportive emotional sounding board (again, The Body Love Journey program may be perfect for you). (7) Finally, accept yourself now and accept yourself every day thereafter. Your body is exactly as it is meant to be right now. If your body was meant to be different it would be and if it needs to be different it will be. Trust. Snowfall in Heaven © Oksana Zhelisko

This simple advice may not be what you’re used to but all I can do is quote Albert Einstein: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” Perhaps it’s time to try something different… Carmen Jubinville is a spiritual certified Life Coach who helps women all over the world overcome unhealthy body image and destructive eating habits. When I finally made a pact with myself, I committed that I would never diet again and that I would never make myself do anything unless it felt good and right for me. I also surrendered my body size and shape to God. I chose to become curious about my binge eating so that I could understand it and I decided to make my emotional health a top priority even if it meant spending the rest of my life in therapy or in other support groups. In fact, because of this, I decided to create The Body Love Journey program to help others dealing with similar body image and weight issues. The program is all about understanding and healing negative body image and destructive behaviors. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Transforming fears into power I still remember two recurring dreams I always had from age three until 40-years-old. In the first dream, I was running very fast and then I would fall off a cliff in terrifying, slow motion… falling, falling, falling. I would wake up just barely before I hit the ground. In the second dream, again I was running very fast but not fast enough, as I would wake up just as someone grabbed the back of my shirt. I can still remember how hard my heart was racing and the adrenaline pounding through me when I would wake up from each dream, either screaming or breathlessly frozen. I don’t remember having any other dreams except those two until I started healing my past, including childhood traumas, just before turning 40-years-old. In contrast, my life and dreams are now luscious, rich, without terror and in living color (terror was black with very little white to me). When each one of us is born, we always have two basic fears present - the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. Other fears or negative beliefs can get embedded in our subconscious during gestation too. Also, from conception to six-years-old is a most detrimental time, when we are our most vulnerable, innocent selves. And if there was no safe, secure attachment figure in your home, it amplifies all fears exponentially. Biofeedback Therapy has the excellent ability to change your fears and even shift them into feelings of personal power again, or maybe for the first time.

I have learned working with clients (and through shifting my own fears) that the basic ‘fear of falling’ we are born with is also felt as a fear of failure for a lot of us. There are specific Biofeedback Therapy training protocols to help you change any fears or old embedded beliefs. For example, changing the fear of falling/failure during a Biofeedback session starts with having my client stand beside the Biofeedback chair. When standing, they allow themselves to fall backward. I catch the client gently with my hands on their back so they do not fall. Sleep © Cindy Revell — www.cindyrevell.com

by Norma J. Hope Certified Biofeedback Specialist

This is repeated several times as needed until the client starts to feel and experience a different, new feeling, usually in their solar plexus, that takes over from the previous feeling of fear. This new, powerful feeling we call ‘earned trust’ is then expanded inside you and transferred into a quartz crystal that the client is also holding.

The client’s very specific ‘earned trust’ feeling that was embedded into the quartz crystal is then transferred from the crystal, via the Biofeedback device tray into the main computer matrix programming, as a unique signature frequency specific for them. The client then relaxes in a reclining chair while we send this new frequency (and others), expanding self-empowerment further on all levels through the headband, ankle and wristbands attached to the client from the device. Adults (and even child clients) all say they feel more powerful, yet grounded during and after this protocol, commenting that they feel like they can do or be ANYTHING afterwards! YOU can transform your fears into power and LOVE yourself and this life. What old fears from childhood experiences may be running your life on the inside? Do you find loud noises startle you still? Do you get really angry or frozen (unable to move or speak)? Are you sensitive to authority figures or confrontation and often feel like you have done something wrong? These fears/beliefs are stored in your subconscious, in your emotional brain (limbic system) but also in certain places in your physical body. They oppress your spirit, plus mentally and physically exhaust you.

But there’s also greater balance in the elemental makeup of the Wood Sheep year and this will be reflected in an inner sense of balance. Here’s a brief look at the luck of each Chinese astrological animal in the year ahead: Sheep/Goat: Change is in the air for you. Stay positive and all will be fine. Your creative and intellectual energy will be strong so it’s a great year to go back to school. Remember to take time to rest and recharge. Best colors: orange, red and brown. Evolution is a long slow process by Bill McDonald

elementals which many psychics connect with thinking they are connecting with something higher.

We grow by learning, by making choices, rightly or wrongly. If we make choices that hurt other beings, we create negative karma. If we make good choices for the right reasons, we learn and evolve. What are the ‘right’ choices? They are that we are all in this together, that we should love one another and that we should learn to use discernment. So, what evolves? Each of us - as sparks or beings of consciousness. We hear a lot about chakras and how easy it supposedly is to balance them. Chakras provide the life force essence of our bodies. They energize our physical body, but also our astral and mental bodies. Chakras exist on three layers of matter: physical, astral and mental matter. When, we (with a soul) reincarnate, we bring with us a number of permanent atoms which contain our akashic records. Only the positive traits that we have acquired are stored in the atoms, but negative propensities exist in a kind of a cloud attached to the atoms. There is an atom for each of the physical, astral and mental planes and there is more to them than I have space to divulge in this article. As we evolve, we can become focused as conscious beings on higher and higher planes. As we (by our efforts) learn, experience and move to higher levels, we receive initiations. As we move from the physical to the astral and the astral to the mental, we receive initiations. We learn to work with the energy of a higher plane after the initiation to that plane. The first two initiations are given by Lord Christ and the second is called the baptism and a person who is receiving one can ask and will be told who and what is happening. As we move to these higher levels, we can contact higher beings and be contacted by these higher beings such as true masters and devas, or angels as you might call them. To contact them we must raise our vibrations as they cannot lower theirs. There are lower beings called

Poppies at Lake Louise © Karen Bishop — www.karenbishop.ca

In previous articles I’ve tried to make one major point that we are all students put here to experience life on this plane.

Most people on the planet are focused on the astral plane, which is called the emotional, desire or glamour plane. They function as what are called personalities. The ancient knowledge says that they must become THINKERS in order to evolve. Most people’s lives are run by their subconscious minds. This is what is recognized as ‘monkey brain’ in people learning to meditate - thoughts arising in our consciousness, usually trying to trigger some emotion. As Eckhart Tolle has so correctly stated, we need to learn to be present in the now. We need to use our conscious mind and be aware of what is happening around us. By doing this, we can move past the emotional plane and into the mental plane.

Our souls as beings are complete and whole. They don’t get fragmented as many stories suggest and we can’t give parts of them away. When we reach the level where we achieve complete alignment with our souls, healing takes on a whole new meaning, as we learn to work with energies unavailable to personalities. The teachings of Pranic Healing can help you achieve that level if you do the work. This has worked for others and it can work for you. Pranic Healing can teach anyone to get to know and feel their energetic body. Pranic Healing can greatly speed the healing process in many instances, but does not make the miraculous claims of many systems. It is meant to be used in conjunction with proper medical care or supervision. There is a YouTube video called “CBS exposes secret benefits of Pranic Healing” in which it mentions that 120 doctors and nurses in southern California are Pranic Healers. One of the doctors featured co-authored Your Hands Can Heal You (Atria, 2004) with Pranic Healing Master, Stephan Co. I encourage you to look at both if you are interested in Pranic Healing and evolution. Bill McDonald is a Pranic Healing instructor. If you are interested in Pranic Healing or would just like more information on what he’s written, contact him at macwk@shaw.ca or text or phone him at 780-203-9189. Self-care for 2015 by Abe Brown Certified Master Coach Trainer Just a few days ago, I had a pain in my lower back and decided to pay a visit to the massage therapist. It was both therapeutic and transformational. Not only did my back pain significantly subside, but I came out of that room with a freshly empowered perspective on self-care. I realized how long it had been since I had taken some time for myself. I couldn’t recall the last time I’d taken ‘me time’ in terms of rest, replenishment and relaxation. It felt good. It also felt like I had been missing something that is essential.

The third is that empowering self-care takes an investment of time and resources. If I matter, and my selfcare matters, then it makes sense to invest my precious time and energy into myself, for my own self-care. And like most of our allocations of time and money, investing in our self-care must be planned, structured, and accountable. The fourth is that effective self-care takes self-awareness. I have come to be aware that my self-care happens best early in the morning when it’s quiet. Meditation, quiet reflection, journaling and prayer are vital pieces of the self-care puzzle for me. However, we all have different needs when it comes to self-care and different ways we experience self-care. Self-awareness informs us as we seek the types of self-care that will work best for us and it guides us to make appropriate self-care decisions.

See, the truth is that we all have a need and an opportunity to feed and nourish ourselves in a number of different ways: physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, professionally, relationally and financially. In fact, one of your greatest friends is your breathing. When we take time to return to our breathing, we find comfort, nourishment and guidance.

© Olga Duk

Years ago, had this conversation played itself out in my head, I would have jumped all over myself with the thinking that my ‘job’ is to care for others, so I don’t need to care for myself. The tape in my head at the time would have screamed that “serving others means sacrifice!” I’m so happy to say, however, that I can now see why self-care is so important.

The fifth is that when I care for myself, I am caring for others. And caring effectively for others builds my business! When we are busy and don’t take time to fuel our own tank, we run out of gas. Leftovers served to your clients will not grow your business, even if served with a smile. Truthfully, it has been in the quiet moments of self-care and replenishment that I have gotten the ideas and inspiration which has elevated my business and my reach.

So, please remember to take time for self-care. Self-care will build your heart and mind and it will grow your business. In 2015 and beyond, you deserve it! Abe Brown is the Coach’s Coach, the President of the Certified Coaches Federation (training/certification of over 9500 Coaches in the last 6 years), founder of Momentum Coaching (www.momentumcoaching.ca) and author of the transformational book, Getting Where You Need To Go.

This experience on the massage table has reminded me of five important truths. The first is that I matter. Sometimes I can forget that I matter. My client matters. Her business matters. His needs matter. But not me. But that is a lie. I matter. You matter. We all matter and we tend to care for what matters. The second is that my self-care matters. Self-care is always a choice we either make, or do not make, and this can be a reflection of our sense of self-worth. Those who care for themselves are expressing self-inherent value when they make their self-care a priority.

Natural versus normal by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist

different gifts and when we allow ourselves the room to explore we find our niche in life. We find how to be comfortable in our own skin.

Never in my wildest dreams, when I was a child, did I think “when I grow up I want to be an astrologer.”

Whether we journey along a more traditional path or choose a less conventional route it is “all okay.” Neither is better than the other nor is one way right for everyone.

It was on a whim that I decided to go to an astrology information evening and was intrigued enough to sign up for an introductory course.

Now chances are if you are reading this article you tend to agree with at least parts of what I say. However I am going to encourage you to take it down a level - meaning, don’t just mouth the words.

The Hands of the Healer © Bernadette McCormack

Question where you are in regards to making choices based on other people’s approval, which may come out of security fears or fear that you won’t be loved if you truly allow yourself to seen. How much tolerance do you have for other people’s path especially when it differs from yours? Have you considered that they may be being their ‘natural self’? How does taking the time to focus on ourselves make the world a better place? It’s because we will be happier and when we are happy, we tend to want the same for other people.

I had already begun to study yoga, meditation and a form of energy healing. I was working at a bank at the time and would chat with my co-workers about the different courses I was taking and although some probably thought it was odd, they were interested and had worked with me long enough that I was perceived as being ‘normal’.

If one of your goals for this year is to learn to be more comfortable in your own skin and have more tolerance for people who have a different perspective than yours, I think you will come to the end of the year feeling healthier and happier. An Astrologer since 1986, Catherine is also a Hypnotherapist and Meditation Instructor. She brings her experiential counselling and teaching style to The Northern Star College of Mystical Studies. Sitting in those first astrology classes I was part curious, part cynical and although I didn’t understand it at the time, very afraid to lose the label of ‘normal’. I was still years away from being able to accept that the types of courses I was studying were totally appropriate for my nature, which was to explore and understand how things connect and affect each other. I was also innocently unaware that I had begun a journey that would turn me upside down and inside out until I understood the difference between normal and natural. Since those first tentative steps I have learned to be at peace with my choices and respect that we all have

When in Rome... by Connie Brisson I’ve watched a lot of old, romantic movies and I have to say that Rome has never been a city that I’ve ever longed to see. Oh, but, was I wrong! Rome is like nowhere I’ve ever been. Everyone says that Paris is magical, but honestly, I think Rome is magical.

The Colosseum is an elliptical amphitheatre (largest in the world) in the centre of Rome. Completed in 80AD, it is built of concrete and stone and considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It could hold between 50,000 and 80,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial contests. As I stood there, it was hard for me to believe that it was really used for men to kill each other, as a sport.

We arrived there on August 15 (on the Roman holiday of Ferragosto) after an 11 day Celebrity Reflection cruise that visited Santorini, Greece; Istanbul, Turkey; Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey; Mykonos, Greece; Athens, Greece; Naples, Italy and ending in Rome, Italy. The cruise ship port of Civitavecchia is about 1½ - 2 hours from Rome. Our wonderful travel agent, Bob Kelly (bkelly@cruiseshipcenters.com), who helped us book the cruise, also arranged for a shuttle to pick us up to take us into Rome. We went straight to Infinity Hotel (www.infinityhotel.it), which I booked after consulting Trip Advisor. We loved Infinity Hotel and would definitely recommend it. However, there are some stairs to climb to get to the lobby and then a very small elevator (the smallest I’ve ever been in) to get to the rooms. But, there is someone there who will carry your luggage for you, so it is manageable and there are also stairs you can take if the elevator is too small for you. Our room was very spacious and modern. We started off our Roman holiday going to one of the most recognized landmarks of Rome, the Colosseum, which was only a 10 minute walk from our hotel. (I gasped when I saw it in the distance! “OMG, we’re really in Rome!”) The receptionist at our hotel suggested (and then helped us purchase) tickets on-line so we wouldn’t waste our time standing in line ups there.

From the Colosseum you can see the Arch of Constantine, the Forum and also the Temple of Venus and Roma, all important parts of Ancient Rome. The next day we toured the Vatican. The Vatican City is a country onto itself, walled within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 110 acres, and a population of 842, it is the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population. Within Vatican City are famous sites such as St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. They feature some of the world’s most famous paintings and sculptures. We had booked a tour (at least a month before we got there) through our hotel. I honestly can’t imagine visiting the Vatican without booking a tour. The line-ups were hours and hours long (someone estimated six hours!) just to get into the front door, so being part of a tour meant that you could get into the Vatican and only wait in line for about an hour

before touring it. I know that tours are an extra investment of money, but when you pay so much to get to a city like Rome, I really think the tours are (ironically) a cost saving way to spend your time and money. Our tour guide (who looked a lot like my Uncle Johnny) was a retired priest, a little arrogant, but informative about all the different aspects of the Vatican and the art we were seeing. My favorites parts were the elaborately decorated ceilings, getting to be in the Sistine Chapel and also seeing the Pietà (1498-1499), the famous sculpture of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the crucifixion, by Michelangelo in St. Peter’s Basilica. Of course, Italy is all about food and we ate at many different restaurants, some good and some just mediocre. Gabbey kept having the best luck, but she would order a Margherita pizza or simple pasta while I was always ordering ones with seafood. Still, I loved eating out and trying different foods there each meal was an adventure. On a much more expensive note, I was so happy that our hotel was a mere half block off the main shopping street of Via del Corso and in the midst of some of the most amazing designer shops. For one entire afternoon I walked from one designer store to another (Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Prada, Armani and so on). You know the old saying: when in Rome, do as the Romans.

www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Our hotel was also close to the Spanish Steps and quite by accident we came upon the glamorous Hotel de Russie in Piazza del Popolo. It was amazing inside and afterwards I discovered it’s one of the top five-star hotels in Rome, catering to the very rich and famous. The one thing that we didn’t get to see in its full glory (as it is being restored) is the famous Trevi Fountain. We walked by it (with all the construction and scaffolding in place) and I couldn’t believe how big it was! For that alone, I’ll go back to Rome. I can’t even imagine how magnificent it must be when it is working. Overall, the part I loved, loved about Rome the most is that there was magic to it at every street corner and piazza (a city square). We would just be walking along a labyrinth-like alley and then, honestly, be spellbound by the architecture of the buildings there, or an amazing statue or a magnificent water fountain (like the one in Piazza Navona, Fountain of the Four Rivers). That happened everywhere! It’s hard to describe the ambience, feelings and smells that captivate you at every turn. I’ve never been to another place where I have been so surprisingly delighted by everything that surrounded me. We are most definitely going back to Rome again, soon! I can’t wait to once again walk up and down the different streets, seeing the beauty of this old city’s architecture and enjoying the restaurants, sites and culture. La dolce vita the good life!

Being naive I wanted to pledge to ‘water’ because I love the ocean, but was told that it doesn’t really work like that and that air (wind) would be more likely. Since then I have experienced the wind in a whole new way. I used to get upset when the wind messed up my hair, but now I love how powerful the wind is even though it is ‘invisible’. APRIL 22 - 27

Mosaic Mystics Meeting - Our guest speaker is Tammie Quick, who will be explaining the healing process of the Heilkunst (Homeopathic) Medical System (www.quick-health.ca), which takes patients on a journey back through time to treat shocks and traumas (deaths, surgeries, accidents, divorce, etc.) in the reverse order that they occurred, using homeopathic medicines to remove the negative imprint that they’ve left behind. This is important because these traumatic events “turn on” the symptoms of inherited diseases “gifted” to us by our ancestors. Join us to learn more. Also, please bring a used/new gift-wrapped book to give away in our book exchange. Email Connie by MARCH 4 at mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca if you can come. Cost: $20 (cash at the door) at Lucina Centre (9505 - 163 Street, Edmonton) at 7:00 p.m. To keep informed about other upcoming Mystic Meetings, go to www.MosaicMagazine.ca and sign up for our free monthly ezine/newsletter.

(Italian) With heart and soul

Gifts from this baby of mine When Gabrielle was just two days old, Marcel came home with two gifts for her. I was still trying to navigate my sore and changing body, afraid to even touch Gabrielle, still grappling with the whole miracle of birth and baby screaming thing, and he was coming home with toys that seemed a little odd for a two DAY old. The first was a ballerina Barbie and I suppose now, looking back, that he may have intuitively foreseen her love for dance. Or, looking back (in another way) maybe the gift actually gifted her with a love for dance. Gifts, given with intention, have great symbolic power - so don’t give them lightly. They’re mystical and that’s why in those old Disney movies, the fairies gave them wisely and thoughtfully. The second gift Marcel gave Gabrielle, the movie Dumbo, turned out to be a life changing gift for me and, because of that, it was a life changing gift for her also. Although I was almost 37-years-old when I had Gabbey, I had never seen Dumbo before. This animated 1941 Disney film focused on an elephant, Jumbo Junior, who was nicknamed ‘Dumbo’ and cruelly ridiculed for his big ears. However, incredibly, he was also capable of flying by using his ears as wings. It was a definite metaphor of how our idiosyncrasies are also our greatest gifts. I really had a rough start with Gabrielle in her life (and of course, she had a rough start with me). She cried almost all the time, while my brother Gene was dying of cancer in one hospital and my mother had just had an operation to remove one of her kidneys filled with cancer in another hospital. She was my only child, so I was new to this ‘Mommy’ thing in every way. But the thing that stood out to me, even throughout all the turmoil and all the anguish of what was happening to my brother and mother, was this immense, over the moon, beyond this universe love that I had for this beautiful, little baby of mine. And then, what also became devastatingly aware to me at that exact same time, as those first days went by and my love for my daughter grew and grew, was the realization that I

knew my mother had never felt this kind of love for me - not even in ALL the years of our lives. I want to pause here, for a brief moment, because a part of me died when I got that ‘aha’. It was no small thing, that realization that ‘I was less or different’ (or my mother would have loved me more), and then the immense feelings of shame and despair that overtook me as a result. I almost drowned in it, but then I had this baby (of mine) to take care of, to put first. Then, one afternoon, months after Gabrielle was born, while she was sleeping, I felt drawn to watch Dumbo. Of course, I had an instant immense empathy for Dumbo, for what made him different and the difficulty he had in dealing with that. But, that wasn’t what touched my soul.

What touched me to the core of my being was the way that Dumbo’s mother loved him SO much. When I saw her in that little jailed cell, communicating her deep love to Dumbo, I started to weep and I could not stop. And then the song… that song was from God for me. I rewound the movie over and over to record the words and then I sang them to Gabbey, over and over the next months. Baby mine, don’t you cry Baby mine, dry your eyes Rest your head close to my heart Never to part, baby of mine Little one when you play Don’t you mind what they say Let those eyes sparkle and shine Never a tear, baby of mine

It’s taken me years and years to understand whatever it was that my Mom and I had (largely good but mixed with some very deep hurt) and if I didn’t believe in reincarnation and karma, I honestly wouldn’t be able to reconcile it at all. I know we choose significant people, especially our mothers, on purpose. So the real learning/lessons come when we can look at why we chose them and what gifts they meant to give us. Whenever I see an elephant with her baby, I always think of Dumbo’s mother and her love for her baby. And then I instantly feel the deep love I have for my daughter. She is a gift to me and I am a gift to her. What my mother could not see or appreciate in me, I can see in her. And that is how gifts can change us… www.MosaicMagazine.ca
