I Love Mosaic In Feng Shui, paintings are important ‘cures’. A cure is an item which is specifically placed in an area of one’s home or office to neutralize negative energy and attract positive, supportive energy. Finding art that really speaks to your heart and being mindful of the images you choose can change the energy of your home. When you bring in (and have specially painted) what you love, that feeling of love infuses your home. This painting was also a ‘cure’ for me in an even deeper way. Nothing and no one is perfect and there is certainly no family that is. In the end what matters, and what this painting reminds me, are of memories that symbolize what I cherish about my family.
www.L3photo.com
In essence, I’ve had Iryna create a fairy tale painting of the beginning of my life’s story - like an image one could see on the first page in a fairy tale. “Life itself is the most wonderful fairy tale,” said Hans Christian Andersen, author of The Little Mermaid. But unlike the Disney version, his original version had the prince marrying someone else and the mermaid dissolving to seafoam. Why? Because life is not always perfect and what are fairy tales but stories about life? by Connie Brisson Years ago when I first saw Iryna Karpenko’s painting featuring a Madonna/mother and child, I was enchanted by it. It felt like a fairy tale to me. For a long time afterwards I searched for something similar something that gave me the same magical feeling I had when I looked at that painting. But I never found anything like it. Then I wondered if I could just ask Iryna to paint me that mother/child, but do it surrounded by images that meant something particularly special to me. This cover of Mosaic is the result of that collaboration (see the whole image on page 38). Of course, this is a painting/story about my Mom and I. I wanted a beautiful memory of her and I wanted to incorporate the many things that reminded me of her: a hummingbird she faithfully fed, poppies/pansies/gladiolus that she grew in her garden, psyanka eggs at Easter, the first pussy willows she gathered each spring and a garden full of vegetables too. But I also wanted this painting to be about the other people/symbols that matter to me, so I had Iryna incorporate two little blonde girls playing under a tree to represent my younger sister and I as little girls, my Dad on an old tractor in the field, a small farmhouse with the chimney burning and an old Ukrainian church with the tombstones of my loved ones who have gone on before me.
Each one of our lives are fairy tales and we are all storytellers. In the end we each decide how we ‘see’ the events of our lives and which stories we feel are important to tell. We’ve all had ‘fairy tale’ moments and we’ve all had tragic moments. How we choose to see those moments and what we do with those moments, that’s what really defines our experiences - as magical or ordinary or oppressive. If someone would have told me (when I was a child) that I’d be writing this to you right now and that my life would eventually give me everything I’d ever wished for, I would have thought it sounded like a fairy tale… my fairy tale. Okay, it’s time now to remind you to think of a question that you’d like a divine, oracle type answer to. What is it that you want to know? On page 24 we have this issue’s Oracle Answer for you, where one tarot card is featured and has a message specific for you, thanks to Ascendant Books. Our next book club dinner will be on Wednesday, June 5 at 6:00 p.m. Join me at the Edmonton book club dinner at Café Beirut, 10058 - 112 Street, Edmonton. Please email me at mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca by June 4th if you can come. Please email Delaney at eyesmiles@hotmail.com by June 4th if you can attend.
I also had Iryna include a white feather that reminds me of my brother Gene and also of Spirit. I can’t look anywhere in this painting and not feel a connection to the important people who have loved me and who I have loved.

Hypnotherapy via the heart Contrary to widely held belief, the heart is not just an incredibly strong, resilient, electrically triggered pump, only responsible for circulating oxygen, nutrients and waste-carrying blood throughout the body. It also serves as a wise advisor to the brain that can bring about changes in health and happiness. Recently published research (Windows to the Womb, by David Chamberlain, North Atlantic Books 2013) confirms the ancient wisdom of the East and the intuitive traditions handed down through all cultures throughout the ages. The heart is the center of the body in the literal, figurative, energetic and spiritual sense. Consciousness expressed as emotion, feeling and yes, intelligence, is found here in this middle chakra, which bridges the lower three chakras of manifestation and the upper three chakras of Spirit. Nature is wise. The human blueprint is priority-based. The heart (with an electrical field 60 times and a magnetic field 5000 times greater than the brain) is the first internal organ formed in the developing embryo, with special dedicated connections to and from the brain and with a memory of its own. Through numerous cases of hypnotherapy, clients have accessed memory of/through the heart before the brain was even formed during prebirth and even preconception. It is the heart that Eastern medicine rightly calls ‘The Emperor’. The brain (the ‘hardware’ that we believe houses the mind) begins to form at the end of the first month after conception, when the heart has already been contracting for over nine days. The heart continues to serve the growing embryo even while still ‘under construction’ itself. The Institute of Heartmath has conclusively proven the heart constantly communicates with and affects the brain (Heart-Brain Interactions, http://www.heartmath.org/ research/science-of-the-heart/head-heart-interactions.html).
The much larger part of the mind (about 85%) is the subconscious. It is accountable for storage and retrieval of memories and for survival through the management of activities such as essential physiological functions (blood pressure, breathing, heartbeat, etc.) and activities that are predictable, learned and do not require new decision making each time. We often refer to this as ‘auto pilot’. The subconscious also ensures survival by developing responses to intense fearful situations involving overwhelm (either emotional, physical or both) that could incapacitate and shut down the life support systems. It is these programmed responses that manifest as uncontrollable behaviors, phobias and dis-ease.
Tree of Life © Monica Castro
by Kimberlay Kiernan RN, CCH, CRHP, CLC
I think of them like computer software programs, installed in the hard drive and faithfully performing exactly as created whenever the trigger situation occurs (ie: the desktop icon is clicked). They enable survival through temporary bridging of an incomplete experience of overwhelm and are carried from lifetime to lifetime. As soon as the originating experience is completed, the problem resolves.
Clinical hypnotherapy involves guided therapeutic journeying into the subconscious mind, locating the ‘software’ responsible for the behavior/phobia/dis-ease and bringing the originating experience to completion. Regression to childhood, infancy, in utero, preconception, and past life is frequently involved. In my therapeutic practice and in the practice of other hypnotherapists who do this type of work, resolution of persistent fears, phobias, compulsions, anxiety, depression, inability to release weight, addictions and even chronic states (such as migraine, asthma, allergy and pain) occur in a few sessions. It’s real healing. It’s permanent and it happens through the mind and ultimately the heart. Kimberlay is a Registered Nurse, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist specializing in past life regression, Certified Reconnective Healing Practitioner and Certified Life Coach practicing in Leduc. The mind has two parts. The conscious mind (about 15%, operating in the present moment) is responsible for analysis, logic, learning, invention, envisioning, recall and review of past data/memory from the subconscious, implementing the decisions of the heart and creativity.

Healing with air Air is the element that entices us to take risks, to communicate our true nature and trust that there is room for our light in the universe. In shamanism it is the dance of breath that connects us to all our relations, breaking down the walls of separation and revealing that we are one. The greatest risk we can take is to be SEEN, consciously choosing our authenticity/individuality over the masks that are familiar. This means being vulnerable, open, real, raw and honest, all of which scares the heck out of us. Our masks hide what we don’t want others to know about us - inclusive of our light. Our masks encourage the idea that we must act or be a certain way, in a certain role, at a certain time. They are exhausting. When we spend so much time worrying about putting on the right face, we forget who we are beneath them all. I had an epiphany in my late teens when I challenged one of own fears around ‘being seen’. It was the summer of 1994… Wreck Beach was alive with people, music and the sweet salty sense of ocean. My prairie spirit was shocked and delighted to have stepped into a world so raw and real, where the truth behind what clothing hid was revealed… I had never been to a nude beach before (Oh my God, I can’t believe I am doing this) and my heart pumped madly, my breath tight in my chest as I slowly ‘bared all’. It was an initiation of sorts and I intuitively used my breath to dissipate the fear that was gathering in my throat. After the heart hammering unveiling, I looked around and noticed what made me the same as all of the others on the beach, rather than what made each of us different.
another way. (Fear is sneaky.) Then I recalled that day so long ago at the beach and used all my awareness to go into my heart with my breath and find my true voice (my naked voice) before I wrote. The fear of being seen collects, as stagnant energy, at our throats. Our throat chakra becomes impacted with illnesses that indicate an inability to give voice to the Soul, to speak truth from one’s heart. Tonsillitis, strep throat, laryngitis and thyroid problems are the signals the body sends us of imbalance. You may have a fear of choking or ‘putting your neck out’ associated with your throat. As you make a conscious choice to use your voice to communicate what is true for you, air will move smoothly through this passage. Butterfly Series, Bonnie © Heather Brewster
by Sarah Salter-Kelly Shaman
Notice what your masks are. Be aware when you find yourself uncomfortable in a new social environment, wondering about how you are supposed to act or be. Breathe through this, visualizing that your inhale is the life force that not only feeds you, is grateful for you… and that your exhale is your gift, your response that feeds the universe…
Choose being yourself. Choose being seen. Sarah specializes in healing personal struggles, imbalance and trauma through ceremony and connection to the Sacred. Twenty years later I am embarking on a new journey in my own spiritual path - writing my first book. Its essence is taking me deeper and deeper into my heart’s work: healing grief and trauma through shamanic ceremony. I noticed I had some initial hesitation when I began writing it, which turned out be that old fear of ‘being seen’. The fear was distracting me from the essence of what I really wanted to write, almost convincing me to go

Books We Love by Zaheen Nanji This book changed my life. I first heard about Law of Attraction when the book and movie, Secret, was released and it made sense. However, I had trouble manifesting my desires until I read Michael Losier’s book, Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don’t (Michael Losier, 2003). Losier explains the three steps to manifesting and gives you tools on how to do that. The first step is identifying your desire by first becoming clear about what you do want, rather than what you don’t want. The second step is to give your desire attention by using affirmations the right way and knowing how the Law of Attraction works. The third step is allowing and this can also be described as eliminating doubt. Losier calls himself ‘the how-to guy’ for the Law of Attraction because the book is simple to understand, has visuals, worksheets and is filled with different tools on manifesting your desire. After I read his book and became a Law of Attraction facilitator, I now own three rental properties, I started a wellness centre in 2010 with my husband, and most recently I have coauthored two books. It works! Zaheen is a behavioural weight loss expert and a success coach. She helps working women attract their ideal weight. by Raya Elyse Drunvalo Melchezidek’s book, The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life (Light Technology Publishing 1990), is my Ascendent Books’ staff pick. I chose this book because it demonstrates how Spirit and matter intertwine and dance together through the beauty of sacred geometry. Matter is an expression of Spirit. Consciousness creates. As above, so below; as within, so without. Every aspect of our physical reality contains within it information of its entirety. From Fibonacci to fractals and from microcosms to macrocosms we see this everywhere we look - once we are made aware. This is a book that makes us aware. Drunvalo uses numbers, facts, symmetry and sequences to keep our analytical left brains busy while our intuitive right brains sort out the bigger picture. And what is the bigger picture? That the same great Spirit moves through everyone and everything. To glimpse and recognize Divine Order in all its glory allows us to trust that there is rhyme and reason woven into the chaos of our lives. Furthermore it gives a sense of our higher purpose.
by Douglas De Long Have you ever wondered if you’ve lived before? As a pastlife therapist with over 20 years of experience, I’ve worked with many people who’ve explored that very question and it changed their lives. Explore your previous lifetimes, embrace your wondrous past and recognize that you, as a human soul, are eternal. Past Lives for Beginners: A Guide to Reincarnation and Techniques to Improve Your Present Life (Llewellyn Worldwide, June 2013) is a detailed and approachable introduction to understanding reincarnation and how it impacts your present life. Using fascinating case studies, I describe different types of past life recall experiences and share favored techniques of meditation and visualization used to gain access to those memories. With guidance on how to connect with spirit guides and religious figures, this book also discusses future lives and how to work towards smooth life transitions. It also includes resources for finding past-life therapists to help you understand your history and forgive past transgressions.
I enjoy Drunvalo’s books not because he tries to teach us, but rather, he encourages us to remember what our Spirit already knows.
The book launch for Past Lives for Beginners will be held at Self Connections Books, #125 Bowness Road, NW, Calgary, on Thursday, June 20th from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Everyone interested in this subject is invited to come and learn more.

Is God ignoring you? Have you ever felt ignored, overlooked and even rejected by God? I can relate because despite many years of prayers, and begging and pleading with God, I couldn’t understand why God wasn’t helping me. It made me angry and I often felt completely abandoned. For many years I struggled with my body image; I was consumed by it. I was a chronic dieter, obsessed about food, binge eating and overeating. I was overly concerned about whether or not I was burning fat while I exercised and I wondered if I measured up every time I walked out the door. The truth is, I woke up thinking about my body and I went to bed thinking about my body. It was draining, exhausting and even depressing. During those painful years, and they were not too long ago, I prayed diligently. I begged and pleaded with God to help me lose weight and to be thin and trim. I prayed for motivation to exercise and I asked God to help me eat proper portions. I spent hours writing in my journal to God about how much I disliked my body and asking Him again and again to transform me into what I so desperately wanted. It wasn’t until I began studying A Course in Miracles (Foundation for Inner Peace, 1976) when I began to see the world and my problems in a much different way. First of all, I realized that God would not participate in my insanity. God would never believe the things about me that I believed about myself.
My friend Joyce shared with me her mantra: “Show me what you want me to see.” I continued even deeper with that form of prayer: “Show me the lessons you want me to learn. Show me how to see myself. Guide me to the solutions.” God quickly responded to my prayers. I struggled with my body image for 15 years and yet once I finally changed what I was asking for, God showed me what I needed to know and learn in just a few short years. God answered my prayers by showing me the root cause of my body image obsession. God didn’t just take away my problem - instead He enlightened me and strengthened me as a woman by showing me exactly what I needed to see and by guiding me in how to heal my situation. detail of Coffee at Le Cafe © Denise Lefebvre

My journey led to help others and today I have a one-year coaching program specifically for women who share the same types of body image issues.
Whether you are struggling with your own body, career, marriage, health or finances, if what you are praying for is going unanswered it may be because it’s time to change what you are asking for. Ask to be shown the root cause. Ask for the lesson to be revealed. Pray that you will be guided to the true solution. Pema Chodron says: “Nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to learn.” Trust her wisdom. Say a new kind of prayer. God is not ignoring you. Ask and you shall receive. Carmen is a Certified Life Coach committed to connecting, coaching and empowering spirit-minded women. Even more, over time, I learned that God would not miraculously heal my body image problem because there was a gift within it that I needed to learn. I realized that until I discovered the lesson within my body image obsession the problem would only persist. With this shift in my awareness I started to pray on a whole new level. Instead of asking God to make me skinny and to make me motivated, I was now asking God to show me the reasons behind my body obsession.

Stop doubting yourself and your business Have you felt called to start a business to make a difference in people’s lives? And do you find yourself feeling doubt… doubt you’ll ever succeed, doubting your gifts or your value? As an Intuitive Business Consultant, I see this all of the time. And it’s sad because when a holistic practitioner faces doubt, something dangerous happens - they STOP. They stop taking action. They stop and question everything! Their foot slams on the brake in their business. And when their foot is on the brake, they don’t attract clients and money is repelled away from them. The people they’re meant to help don’t get the help they need. Almost 90% of the time, there is something going on energetically to cause this doubt. Until this deeper energetic block is pinpointed and healed, doubt will keep coming back. To provide temporary relief when you find yourself feeling doubt, here are the ‘5 Simple Steps to Shift Out of Doubt’. Think of an experience that causes you to feel doubt. Grab a pen and paper - let’s go! STEP 1: Thoughts & Feelings OUT - In Step 1 you get all of the circling thoughts and feelings out of your mind and onto the page. Write for as long as you like, until you feel you’ve gotten most of the thoughts and feelings out around what’s going on for you. I know you’ve probably heard you’re not supposed to focus on the negative; that’s not what you’re doing here. These thoughts and feelings are already going on WITHIN you; you’re simply allowing them to vent OUT of you! STEP 2: Where is Your Focus? Is your focus on you or those you’re meant to help? Look at your notes from Step 1. Do you notice the focus is all on YOU? If so, this is a major problem because it amplifies any doubt you are experiencing.
STEP 4: Why You? Write all you can think of about why you are the person to help your clients or potential clients. What life experience do you have that relates to what they’re going through? Have you been where they are and gotten out of it? What training and experience do you have that can help them? Why are YOU the perfect person to help them? Spend plenty of time here because Step 4 helps you put your foot back on the gas pedal. Your confidence and faith goes up with this important step, which is exactly what you need to get moving in your business! The Rush © Oksana Zhelisko — www.zheliskoart.com
by Fia-Lynn Crandall Intuitive Business Consultant
STEP 5: Declare “I Choose to Trust” - As a final step, it helps to remind yourself that the Universe is backing you. You’ve been drawn to create this business for a reason, that you ARE meant to be doing this work, that your path is guided.
There is deeper work to be done before a permanent shift out of doubt will occur. Doubt indicates that a part of you is resisting your success and stopping you from making a bigger difference in the world (and the money that goes with it!). Now more than ever it’s time to make the difference you’re here to make and for doubt to be a part of your past! Fia-Lynn Crandall, Intuitive Business Consultant, teaches Holistic Practitioners how to pinpoint and heal the 4 energetic blocks to a thriving business. Discover what Energetic Business Blocks are in your way: www.IntuitiveBusinessAssessment.com
STEP 3: Client Pain - Here you begin to shift the focus off of you and onto the people you’re meant to help. Write all about the pain, challenges and problems your clients or potential clients are facing right now. The problems you can help them with. Write as much as you can, really putting yourself in your clients’ shoes and connect with what they are experiencing. This step gets your foot off the brake.

Skye’s View
Living a balanced life A common symptom of our busy lives is a lack of inner and outer balance. One of the easiest ways to bring ourselves back into balance is through honoring the elements within our home. In Feng Shui there are five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. It’s particularly powerful when the elements are in their ‘living’ form. The living form of the wood element is a living plant. As the little seedling pushes through the earth, we are reminded to be courageous, to open ourselves to new possibilities and ultimately, be willing to grow. Small plants and trees support us to move beyond our fears and open ourselves to new possibilities. If you are feeling stuck in your life or mired in the stagnant energy of the past, bring a living plant into your home. This year plants strengthen the south and southeast of your home, are also acceptable in the southwest and west and they should be avoided in the east, northeast, north, northwest and center. The living form of fire is experienced in a sunny room, a lit fireplace or candle and a beautiful lamp or light feature. The fire element uplifts our spirits, fills us with energy and warms our hearts with joy. Bring the fire element into your home when you’re feeling depressed, a lack of passion and aliveness and depleted of energy. This year fire strengthens the south, east and northeast of your home, is also acceptable in the north and west but should be avoided in the center, southeast, southwest and northwest.
confused, disorganized and bogged down with clutter. This year metal strengthens the southwest, north and center, is acceptable in the south, northwest and east but should be avoided in the southeast, west, and northeast. The living form of water is represented by fountains and aquariums. The water element awakens our intuition, teaches new awareness and helps us connect to supportive individuals and communities. Bring the water element into your home when you are feeling lost, lacking direction, mired in old disabling beliefs, cut off from your emotions and intuitive guidance, feeling alone and isolated. This year water strengthens the southeast, west, north and northwest, is acceptable in the southwest, but should be avoided in the south, center, east and northeast. Water is also never acceptable in a bedroom as it can attract loss into your life when placed here. Root Chakra © Aquarian Creations/Jennifer Christenson
by Skye MacLachlan Feng Shui Consultant
If you are missing one or more of the elements in your home, pay special attention to the qualities represented by this element and notice how your life changes as you welcome the living element into your home. Also, consider setting up an altar that has each of the elements represented. Spend time sitting at your altar and opening your energy to the guidance of Spirit. I’m always amazed by the feeling of harmony that develops in homes where altars are present. May the spirit of the living elements bless you and your home this year and may you feel gratitude for the many gifts that these elements offer. Skye has specialized in Feng Shui for the home and business for over 30 years. She teaches Feng Shui, Tarot and Dreamwork at the Northern Star College of Mystical Studies in Edmonton, www.northernstarcollege.com or 780-447-3667.
The living form of earth is found in stones, gems and crystals. The earth element brings a deep sense of peace and harmony into our lives. Bring the earth element into your home when you are feeling agitated, overstimulated, or exhausted. This year earth is acceptable in the northeast, southeast and northwest; it should be avoided in the south, southwest, west, north, east and centre. The living form of metal is represented by items that are made of copper, brass, bronze, silver, pewter and gold. The metal element brings clarity and order into our lives. Bring metal into your home when you are feeling www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Rosen Method is a sacred work by Cinnamon Cranston Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner Five years ago, before I began the Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner Training Program, I felt I had arrived at a pivotal plateau in my life. For many years previous I had been working diligently on myself and had gained much insight into the whys and wherefores of my life. I had great relationships with my family and friends and a satisfying career yet something was still missing. Inside me crept feelings of anxiety, restlessness and dread with their incessant question: “Is this all there is?” The emptiness seemed unforgivable because I had so much to be grateful for in my life. The problem was I couldn’t connect to myself as deeply as I yearned for. I wanted to feel more aliveness, more spontaneity and more connection to myself and others but I didn’t know how to get there. I felt like there were places in me that I couldn’t access and I both longed for and feared these places. What would I discover? Would there be pain? Joy? There were still things about me I didn’t know yet and that both excited and scared me at the same time.
to experience myself in a way that I had not been able to since I was a small child. Afterwards I was curious about how this combination of touch and words had given me an experience that I had never had before in any other healing therapy. I was invited by my practitioner to participate in an Introductory Weekend Workshop in Rosen Method and was so moved by the work that I continued in the training and became a Certified Rosen Method Bodywork (RMB) Practitioner. RMB gave me a way of living and being in the world that I had been looking for and it gave me a way of being with people in a deeper more spiritual way. As a Registered Massage Therapist I was trained to treat and ‘fix’ specific soft tissue problems in the body through various manipulative techniques. But I wanted to have a different relationship with people, to touch them in a different way. During the RMB training I learned about how people hold their bodies in certain ways in an effort to hold their emotional self together. At times when our feelings about what we are experiencing are too much for us, our bodies tighten and work to hold down our feelings so that we can carry on. Over time we forget about our feelings and

Then, as fate would have it, someone introduced me to Rosen Method Bodywork, a new kind of somatic bodywork that I had never heard of before. I decided to give it a try, thinking it might help me discover some of the missing pieces of myself. I wasn’t wrong. During my first Rosen session I was able

the way we’ve had to hold our bodies becomes just a part of who we are and how we carry ourselves in the world. Marion Rosen, the founder of Rosen Method said: “the body tells the truth” and she was right. Our minds may forget what we experienced but our bodies never do and it shows up in our posture, our breath and the way we move. During one transformational Rosen Method session, a memory came forward of a very traumatic experience that occurred when I was eight years old. I was lying on top of my mother, clinging to her unconscious body. I was in absolute despair, afraid she was going to die and leave me alone. Although I had been aware of this memory before, I had never been able to let the feelings of that moment come out. Feeling the love and support of the Rosen Method practitioner, I was finally able to let myself feel that experience, knowing it was finally safe to do so and that I could now handle it and let it go. After the initial feelings of pain washed through me, I felt myself lighten and in my mind I saw my little girl get up off of my mother and come back to me. I felt a deep peace within myself. I noticed all the muscles in my hips, back and legs release from what felt like years of holding. I then had a moment where I felt a profound joy in just being alive. I felt like I’d found myself and that this was what I had been looking for all long. The RMB technique meets you through touch at the exact place where unconscious holding is evident in the body. Using both presence and words, the RMB Practitioner invites the client to be present to their own experience of themselves. When the client allows themselves to fully experience the ‘holding’ and whatever feelings are being held there, the body can then begin to release the holding and relax.
held feelings arise in a client and are allowed to be experienced, this is what creates the possibility of letting go and the opportunity of experiencing something else in themselves. To learn how to do this for someone I had to be willing to drop into my own experience and what I might be holding onto unconsciously within myself. There was no faking it in this training and I both loved and respected this work because of its inherent integrity. Training to become a RMB Practitioner has changed my life in more ways than I could have imagined. The anxiety and emptiness are gone. I have deeper connections with the people in my life because I am more present and engaged with them. The most precious gift, however, is that I am able to be fully present to myself and allow myself to be the person I always wanted to be: trusting, creative, spontaneous, unconditionally loving, playful and fun. I love my life and am free to co-create my experiences because I am free from the many unconscoius beliefs and feelings that were holding me back from fully engaging in my life. I love my work. It doesn’t even feel like work. It feels like a precious gift to be able to be there for people in a way that they have the opportunity to experience themselves as they truly are. Rosen Method is a sacred work. I can’t imagine doing anything else. Cinnamon is a Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner and the Vice-President of the Rosen Method Institute Canada. Students are drawn to the RMB training for two reasons. The first is that they want to become a practitioner and the other is the internal process for themselves which is a big part of the training. Receiving and giving the work is an important part of developing the skills which are necessary to be a practitioner. I decided to do the training for both reasons. What I liked about the training was that it was a safe and supportive place for me to learn more about myself as I learned to be there for others in a way that they could experience themselves (without me trying to direct them or make something happen). The hardest part was getting out of my own way and trusting the process. I had to learn to sit with the question of how do I touch someone and bring my presence and connection to that touch at the place where I see/feel their unconscious holding in the body. Then I had to be patient and wait for the client to meet me and themselves at that place. Words were incorporated later as the ‘third hand’, a way of meeting what is coming up for the client without doing anything with it. Students of RMB are taught that people are perfect just the way they are. Nothing needs to be fixed. When long www.MosaicMagazine.ca

“I’m physically cold so much of the time, from autumn until May or June. Then I feel too hot and get overheated easily! I try practical ways to stay warm/cool off but they never last. I think there must be a more complicated reason. I have also struggled with really bad anxiety at night and insomnia. I have a hard time convincing myself that I am ‘safe’ when I don’t have a logical reason to be anxious. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you.” RR, Edmonton by T.J. Wallingford Tarot Consultant
if you are supporting someone of strong moral values who is on a great mission.
Often physical issues are the outcome of something that originally took place in our mental or emotional fields and was repressed or ignored until, in time, it has made its way into a tangible form. These symptoms are our body’s way of letting us know that something needs to be dealt with once and for all.
2013 is a 9 personal year for you. It represents a time to leave behind everything you have outgrown. Examine how you feel about the relationships and situations in your life. It’s common for a 3 life path to doubt his/her ability to make the right decisions but when you examine how you ‘feel’ about your options rather than what you ‘think’ is the right thing, you will be led to the right choice for you.
The Sage of Cups suggests that the issue is not only emotional but that it spans generations. Resetting your body through diet would be a beneficial first step. The 9 of Crystals prompts you to educate yourself. Do some research. There are many doors available to you to resolve these issues - start exploring different paths (Ayurvedic, herbal, holistic nutrition, etc.). The Woman of Worlds with the Chariot reminds you there has been a lack of productive action due to fear of loss, as well as constant busyness distracting you from what has been happening in your body. The Man of Worlds challenges you to take action; a physical routine can go a long way to warming the body as well as allowing us to feel strong and secure, alleviating anxiety. Taking responsibility for your well-being as well as testing different paths on the journey of getting to know your body-mind should prove to be rewarding over time. by Bernadette Evans Angel / Oracle Reader Archangel Michael wants you to know you can always call on him when you require protection. I recommend you put white light around yourself to feel safe. Your body is talking to you loud and clear. Your anxiety, body temperature and insomnia are all related. First of all you need to love and accept who you are and second, find time for stillness. You’re busy running around and not taking enough ‘me’ time. It’s time to surrender and let this anxiety go - relax. You need to be still and hear what your body has to say. You’re going through a huge transformation right now and it’s natural to be feeling confused and anxious. You may want to seek help from a professional, possibly in the area of boundary work, to help you through this transformational process. You also want some peace of mind so you can sleep. Concentrating on your breath is a great way to get out of your head. Try breathing into your heart chakra/chest, then breathe into your solar plexus/stomach and lastly breathe into your root chakra/tailbone area. Do this three times and feel your body relax. It may also help to take a hot bath before bed. Bernadette is an Astrologer and Intuitive Card Reader. Retraining our emotional brain Since becoming a therapist in 1999, plus healing my own trauma, I’ve always been fascinated with our emotional brain the Limbic System. The Limbic System is primarily responsible for our emotional life including interpreting our experiences of fear, anger, pleasure, sorrow and storing them. It’s involved in everyday survival, signalling you when you are hungry, thirsty, plus other ‘wants’. It also regulates your nervous systems, hormones, sensory perception and motor function. It is an absolute ‘go to’ place when doing Biofeedback Stress Reduction Therapy with clients as it identifies, re-trains and balances old traumas that ‘run us’ subconsciously, which also affects what we attract into our lives. It is our emotional memories including traumas (from our experiences from the time we were in the womb [gestation] to six years old), that predetermine our ‘set’ points for us in the Limbic System. When we don’t heal our past trauma, our subconscious emotional memories of them get retrieved (triggered) into present day as if the trauma is happening right this minute. It feels HUGE because we were so little when the original memory of that trauma was stored, even though we are now adults. The brain is extremely complex. The main brain structures that make up the Limbic System are the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, plus four other minor ones. The amygdala decides which memories get stored and which don’t (memories with the most emotional charge always get stored - fear is very memorable). The hippocampus indexes our emotional memories sending them into storage and also retrieving them when we get triggered. The hypothalamus is mainly concerned with homeostasis, which is the process of returning something to a normal ‘set’ point - like the set thermostat temperature in your home tells the furnace when to come on or shut off. It constantly brings most brain and body functions back to your ‘set’ points every nanosecond of every minute of every day.
Biofeedback Therapy (through a complex computer matrix) interfaces with your subconscious allowing nonverbal conversation, using the language of energy in a positive, productive way to identify and access these Limbic System stored memories. Biofeedback identifies a client’s individual traumas, at what age and with whom. It has 850 program screens utilizing 11,000 different signature frequencies to ‘retrain’ the stress caused on an emotional, physical, mental and spiritual level.

Robert, a 13-year-old client, had severe constipation. I know from experience as a Certified Colon Hydrotherapist, and personally, that stress from emotional trauma mostly causes this. After one biofeedback session, he was eliminating. After the second session, Robert’s stress and fear were reduced enough that he confided in his mother that he was being bullied at school. Biofeedback Therapy identified the traumas from gestation and early childhood from his subconscious, which were related to the reasons he attracted bullies. After several sessions, the fear and bullies have stopped, and he is experiencing a new emotional bond with his father.
Another client, Dennis (26-year-old man) had anger issues causing multiple problems in his life. He felt he would get extremely mad over really little things. Biofeedback Therapy identified three traumas during gestation weeks 18, 26 and 32. The Biofeedback frequencies balanced these traumas without knowledge of what they were, releasing the anger. His mother (when asked) told him she attempted suicide three times when pregnant. Biofeedback Therapy brings balance to your life. Trauma skews normal ‘set’ points. For example, feeling intense fear/anxiety in a situation today that is not really scary as an adult, but your memory says it is. Imbalance in the Limbic System also causes addictions like drugs, alcohol, gambling, sweets or overeating. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Revealing your authentic self I have a friend who always understands where I’m coming from. He pays little attention to the words I’m using, yet nothing slips by him. He’s sensitive, honest to a fault, non-judgemental and never speaks a word. When he doesn’t respond to me the way I expect, it’s always because I’m not being clear. Yet, his communication is always simple and direct. When we are aware of what our personal communication obstacles are, we can eliminate them, which leads to better relationships with less drama. Another big payoff is that we begin to understand the futility of stuffing down things we need to say and the corresponding emotions. In a Jin Shin Do® Bodymind Acupressure® session, we find the places in the body where those repressed emotions have taken up residence. Suffering, pain and achiness are a request from the body to be more real and also give us clues about the words, thoughts, feelings and experiences we haven’t been able to deal with, or even talk about. As we release the tension around those areas, we begin to see what caused the tension and then we have the opportunity to deal with and release those problems. The more layers we peel away, the easier it is to see what lies underneath. My search to find something that could let me help my clients change their lives led me to Jin Shin Do®. On that path I also discovered and experienced Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). EAL sessions offer participants opportunities to learn and practice communication and relationship skills with a horse, mule or donkey (all equines). This practice can then be translated into an understanding of our interactions with other humans. In combining Jin Shin Do® with EAL we are able to bring the participant to an even deeper awareness of how their own emotional blocks are playing a part in creating challenges or obstacles to communication and ultimately to their relationships.
being presented. Horses value awareness, congruency and consistency above all and are drawn like magnets to someone who is being genuine. One of our clients describes her experience this way: “The equines have consistently provided me with unconditional guidance and support to remove my blinders and learn what I most needed to know about myself to enhance my natural talents, professional skills and quality of life.” Another said: “I found it extremely useful to visually see why some sorts of behaviour or attitude worked while another did not. It helped me to better understand how to handle a variety of situations.” So, what’s in it for you? In Jin Shin Do® sessions you will be more aware of what your body has to say at that level below your consciousness and in EAL sessions you will become aware of how you are actually presenting yourself to the world. This ‘ultimate combo’ will send you away with a new awareness of what’s getting in the way of your communications (and ultimately in your relationships) and give some new tools to change the way you interact with others. It’s so easy to get hung up on words. Horses don’t have that problem; they see through all of our layers. They sense the many conscious and unconscious levels behind the communication and instinctually react to what is

The synchronicity of healing There are times in life when nothing seems to work and there are times when everything comes together, a phenomenon we call synchronicity. Reorganizational Healing (ROH) offers a new way to consciously participate in your own wellness. Synchronicity is one of the main components of healing and personal evolution. You don’t need to create it because it’s always present. ROH helps people develop skills of body awareness that promote the potential for being aware of the moment you're ‘there’. The first opportunity for synchronicity is found in any event that disrupts your ordinary or habitual life. Healing is a call for a change. Anything new is awkward at first; it can cause tension, discomfort, even pain. A symptom is not an irritant sent to inconvenience you, rather it is a moment of synchronicity that invites you to look inside. When you look inside you want to discover your authentic self, your core being. The symptom is a way your authentic self lets you know your current behavior does not support or does not align with who you are and what you value. Simply said, your resistance informs you: “Right now something has triggered you to play small.” Often we try to “figure out what to do” with our problem. Figuring out your problem will only produce less of the problem. You may or may not get it right - this is the limit of knowledge. Synchronicity allows you to download your ‘better’ behavior from a place called knowing. From knowing, the change you create produces less of the problem and more life. The change comes from your wholeness so it feels natural to you.
The process I use to treat my patients is called entrainment. Light touches at specific points on the spine help the conscious brain align you with what supports you. Entrainment means to synchronize. What synchronizes? Your breath, movement and energy are true reflections of your authentic self. As you become at ease, these three resources merge together to become one expression - one you and an experience of synchronicity. My treatment area accommodates four people at once. Your body follows the principle of the least amount of energy consumption with the most stability. As you struggle in a place in your body, the person near you may open in that same place in their body. Simultaneously, your place of resistance opens into ease. The ease releases energy and wisdom from your tension. Little Boy © Sahhara Heather
by Dr. Robin Browne Doctor of Chiropractic
How do my clients feel about being treated together? They feel amazing because the experience is synchronous - it simply happens. Change can be uncomfortable but in the presence of someone transforming through a difficult time, change is irresistible.
We are each other’s healing. You may feel like you’ve got to learn it and do it on your own, but this is the hallucination of our culture. When you are present with life, you know how to be with life. When you are present with someone, you know how to be with them. To experience ROH and synchronicity please contact my office so we can let you know about upcoming events. The body awareness workshops are open to all and are a great introduction to the work. Robin offers Network Care at New Strategy Wellness Centre. It’s exciting how easy wellness can be. To get started today call 780 429-0023. Note: This information is for educational purposes only. It is intended to supplement your current health program, not to replace the care of a licensed medical doctor.
When we heal we can feel it; we know it because we have an internal standard. This also applies to higher levels of wisdom. When you ‘arrive’ at a whole new level you can feel it because the authentic you already knew it. Synchronicity is your doorway from ordinary to extraordinary. How can you do this? First, you need to be able to recognize where you are in the present moment. Body awareness helps you feel safe again in your experience of now. It allows you to ‘be’. The focus on doing leads away from synchronicity, the focus on being leads you towards.

Natural Healing “In the past month I’ve become aware of some ‘presences’ in my clinic. This is new for me.The clinic is below an apartment building, plus many different clients are entering our clinic’s space. I had someone do some clearing which I found helpful. I also bought sage smudge spray and a ceremonial feather to help clear out my space. However activity keeps coming back in certain areas. This is the perfect opportunity to add a cleansing altar to your space! A cleansing altar can keep your space (whether it is a home or business) constantly clear and energized, as well as protected from outside negativity.
White opalescent light is likely going to be the most effective energy to work with in clearing your space and keeping it that way. Each morning and evening allow yourself an additional 10-15 minutes to spend on this exercise. Enter your space, close your eyes and connect with the energy of your space. Notice where energy is flowing quite wonderfully and harmoniously and where energy is stagnant and or dissonant.
First off, the initial feeling I got was it may not be necessary for you to get rid of this presence, but to acknowledge it! Not all energies are of a lower vibration, or what some would refer to as a negative entity.
What you are doing is allowing the items on your altar to work together to the highest good of your space and the people who enter it (including yourself). The largest benefit to an altar is that it constantly clears and energizes (and never requires cleansing) and is naturally calming, as it puts out a clear, constant, calm energy that appeals to the energy within us. To build one you will need the following items: Himalayan salt, fine/medium grained sand, sage, sweet-grass, lavender, chakra set, petrified wood, quartz crystal cluster and citrine. To make the best use of your cleansing altar, place the items in a large container, arranging them together based on intuition. Once assembled, set your intention for the space, as well as any specifics your clinic requires. You may also find stones (specific to you) that will be added to the altar over time. This is called a ‘rebirthing’ of the altar, allowing you to shift the intentions of the altar as you continue working with the needs of the space and the people within it. Using your breath, draw down opalescent white light from Source and fill your entire being with this energy. When you feel that you are ‘full’ begin to use your breath and/or your hands to send this energy to your space. Focus most specifically on the areas you notice are weaker, dissonant or where leaks occur. When you feel that your space has been cleared and replenished, continuously send out white opalescent light from your heart center while meditating in the space for several minutes - holding the intention that your space is yours, that the energy in this space only supports loving and harmonious energies and that all other energies simply are not able to flow in this space. This exercise should be repeated twice daily for a minimum of 12 weeks and then daily or weekly as needed to maintain the space. I would not claim to be an expert in this area but there is a possibility that this presence could be there to help you, and that’s why it won’t go away. All you need to do is ask. If you are aware and can feel that it’s there, then you also have the ability to connect and communicate with this presence as well. The veil is thinning between us and them, and in essence, are we not all the same. I personally deal with entities that come and go here at the Centre all the time because of the type of work we do, but I have never felt this has been a problem. Actually this has taught me a great deal about how powerful we all really are. I also shared your question with my sister Valerie, who is also a Psychic/Medium here at the Centre, and asked for her opinion on your question. Chakra Balancing through pain There are many kinds and ways of experiencing pain. Over the last seven years of my practice I have learned that energy work is a very effective and swift way to clear, lift and lighten the burden of pain. Chronic pain is an unfortunate experience for many of us. Whether caused by illness, injury or life circumstances, it matters not. What matters is your quality of life and how you are able to live your life - hopefully the way you want to. Over the years I have helped many clients to overcome pain on emotional, physical, energetic and mental levels. Sometimes this happens quite quickly and other times it is an ongoing journey bringing deeper and longer lasting relief with more sessions. I have found that energy work seems to offer the most success with ease and joy over other modalities when it comes to eliminating or at the very least managing pain. Since this sort of discomfort isn’t really tangible or measurable it can be hard to pinpoint a more traditional Western approach to solving the mystery; often pain management through medication is the solution. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t. It often leaves you feeling powerless and lacking the control you want to have about your life and with less than desirable side effects. Chakra Balancing is very subtle work. We work together to tap into what your body is communicating on all levels. From this information we are able to address the source of disharmony that exists in the body and work towards restoring balance and congruency in your energetic field, which brings the physical body back to harmony and health.
fields are interconnected and are, above all else, about flow. At the end of their session they are always amazed that they feel better, that their pain is gone or so significantly reduced that it isn’t bothering them any longer. Range of motion is often markedly improved. Then it is their turn to smile! When our energetic flow is interrupted or sluggish it creates congestion. How your body shows you this congestion or disharmony is often through pain, illness or depression to name a few. How we work to restore balance is a highly intuitive process that does not always follow logic or linear thinking. What I do know is that through intention, facilitation and co-creation, harmony can be restored with ease and grace. Through energetic alignment, frequencies and energies shift and transform, finding balance and rejuvenation naturally, intuitively. Summertime Fireweed © Lucie Bause

Chakra Balancing restores our bodies to their natural and optimal states of being. Through this energetic transfer we receive replenishment and nourishment. Our bodies are gently reminded of what balance and health feels like and are given the opportunity to return to this state of homeostasis. With gentleness, finesse and simplicity, the only side effects are feeling better. Isn’t it time you returned to blissful easeful balance? Whether you experience chronic joint pain, back aches, have nerve damage or even acute pain, relief is possible. I always smile to myself when a client comes (and perhaps their issue is a frozen shoulder or a hip ache) and part way through the session they will say: “it’s my hip that hurts - not my stomach.” I will ask them to let go, to trust and to breathe. Healthy dental choices are here I began my dentistry working in my father’s practice, outside Hollywood, where he taught me the unforgettable gift of patient ‘TLC’ care. However, the southern California lifestyle of celebrities and other affluent patients was more focused on ‘looking good’ dentistry than ‘do good’ dentistry. My wife, Laurena, was also a dentist and neither of our hearts were into the superficial treatments offered in California; the patients we were seeing there did not really need our services. Consequently, Laurena and I set focus on underserved regions in Canada’s remote Northwest Territories. Previous experience with the indigenous peoples of this region burned deep into our consciousness after seeing the extensive damage their new ‘southern-civilized’ diet of sugar and carbohydrates had brought them. After 25 years of fly-in dental services to isolated Inuit and Indian communities, we left Canada’s Arctic and came to Alberta to heal ourselves from exposure to mercury present in the numerous dental amalgam fillings we placed over the years. To this day Laurena cannot practice dentistry due to chemical sensitivity as a result of mercury exposure. Holistic studies in environmental sciences, integrative medicine/dentistry and the alternative sciences became our focus to aid in our healing process while providing training and experience to facilitate a paradigm shift in our philosophy. This new vision allowed establishment of our holistic dental practice, Roots on Whyte Dental.
filtration, intra-oral isolation, oxygen and proper removal techniques for the patient are some of the safety procedures utilized. Once mercury amalgam fillings are properly and safely removed, the remaining defect in the tooth needs to be restored functionally and esthetically. Resultant to the latest technological and material advances, patients today have excellent choices of dental restoratives. White composite fillings have improved over the years and, although comparable to plastic, they are affordable, easily placed, reasonably durable and look tooth-like. We utilize only the highest quality dental composites. For larger tooth defects that require additional structural support, the ceramic restoration is a good choice. Biocompatibility of dental fillings has become a realistic concern among many patients today. The ceramic is metal and mercury free, esthetic and although more costly than composite, it is extremely durable.

Fabrication of the ceramic restoration is accomplished utilizing the latest high-tech 3D digital computerized technology. An LED 3D imaging camera replaces the traditional messy intra-oral tray impressions. Laboratory procedures are performed in-house allowing for convenient one-appointment restoration placements.
In most cases the ceramic restoration requires less tooth reduction, is bonded solid with the prepared tooth, is strong, biocompatible and looks great as well. Today we have the advantage of hindsight, advanced technology and the benefit of fabulous new dental materials. Tomorrow’s dentistry is here today. From our personal experience with the health hazards, resultant to exposure from traditional dental materials, we researched extensively the new high-tech digital developments in the dental field. We soon realized that today there are safer more biocompatible dental fillings available which preclude the need to use older, potentially more hazardous materials. Many patients today have concerns for contact with mercury and other heavy metals. Removal of amalgam fillings requires protection for the patient and dental team from potential exposure to mercury particles and vapors released during the drill out phase. Clinic and personal air

Paramedical skin corrective treatments Skin issues, aging spots, wrinkles and other life defining developments never caught my interest in my 20’s but now that 60 has rolled around, I ‘get it’. My life long interests have always included health, wellness and nutrition. I was a children’s dentist for 27 years but as a result of toxic exposure to certain dental materials, including mercury amalgams, I can no longer practice dentistry. It was a lesson hard learned but it taught me the importance of working with and using products/ techniques that are compatible with living tissues that do not cause harm. In fact, it lead me to focus on the importance of what we put INTO our body (Nutritionist) and now what we put ON our bodies (Paramedical Therapist). Paramedical is an adjunctive to the ‘Practice of Medicine’ in the maintenance and restoration of health and normal cell functioning. The medical and aesthetics worlds have drawn closer together in this last decade. Paramedical ingredient formulations and treatment protocols have been instrumental in closing the gap. As a Paramedical Dermal Specialist I understand the importance of skin - the largest organ of the body. Skin expresses a reflection of overall health, protects the body from invasive, contraindicated insults and feels good when caressed. Skin is often overlooked, an underestimated protective coating. More today, than in the history of man, the skin is exposed to an abundance of new and intriguing challenges. Smog, acid rain, chemicals, synthetic perfume, deodorants, residual soaps/conditioners on clothing, sun protector creams - and the list goes on. Our world is very new in many ways and the body we live in must adjust to it all or suffer the consequences.
All treatments are designed to compliment the body’s chemistry. The body reacts in a positive manner to the chemistry it recognizes. At Casa de Luz we work ‘with’ the skin rather than ‘on’ it for total skin revision and resurfacing utilizing pure botanical based natural products. We diagnose clients by individual ‘skin condition’ rather than ‘skin type’ and follow the concept of: 1) Removal - Enzyme hydrolyzation changes dead cell material into a weak acid, which is flushed from the underlying structure of new, younger skin cells. This process removes impurities and begins the skin tightening process. 2) Rebuild - Gives the skin cell a healthier environment, stimulates the fibroblast cells to increase collagen production and eliminates free radical damage. 3) Protect - From pollution with its free radical promoting chemicals, sun radiation and fluorocarbons utilizing the super antioxidant proanthacyanidins. 4) Maintain - To enhance results after professional treatment by maintenance with home prescriptives. At Home in the Sky © Bernadette McCormack

Results at Casa de Luz, following treatment, can include: • Improved skin tone to optimal skin function. • Tightening of skin and the face muscles. • Reverse signs of aging and environmental damage. • Remove hyperpigmentation, lentigo, melasma, chloasma, burlocks and dark circles. • Reduce or eliminate acne and superficial acne scars. • Hydrolyze away fine lies and wrinkles. • Restore natural tone and color. The end result is a non-surgical facelift.
No longer a 20-year-old, I am grateful for today’s ‘natural’ advancements in skin care and rejuvenation therapy. Timing in life is everything. At Casa de Luz Rejuvenation Centre in Sherwood Park, natural non-invasive alternatives to laser, surgery and chemical peels are available. “I’m 41 years old and I was diagnosed with peri-menopause at 38. Sometimes the hot flashes are insane and I’d like some advice on the best thing to do to reduce hot flashes? HA, St. Albert by Anny Slegten By reading your question, I realize what you want to do is reduce hot flashes. If your belief is that this condition is inevitable, it will be so. Having been raised in Africa, I had never heard about menopause until coming to Canada. And now, I hear there is even talk about perimenopause. I wonder what will be the talk next. It is true that each time we call ‘it’ by name, we give ‘it’ life. To help you resolve these hot flashes, I would lead you first into a super-conscious state. Since the answers are within you, I would then ask you many questions to
by Lauren Slade Online Health & Reflexology Expert “The climacteric is a mysterious time about which sinister myths continue to cling” wrote Germaine Greer in The Change (Hamish Hamilton Ltd., 1991). The ‘climacteric’ is actually the official and old name for the transition phase when women experience change, both physical and emotional, and is divided into three phases. Pre-menopause: Age 40+ when hormonal changes take place but may not always be noticeable. Some hot flushes might occur. Peri-menopause: Ovary function declines and periods become irregular. This is the time when most physical changes are noticed. Post-menopause: From the time of the last period until end of life. understand the cause of your condition. We would then be able to go from there. To temporarily relieve hot flashes, close your eyes and put the hot flashes thermostat on the screen of your mind. Become aware of where it is set, and bring it down to what you believe it should be set at. Considering hot flashes are a symptom of something else, this will only relieve the symptoms and will most likely have to be done on a regular basis. Regular reflexology sessions can help support the menopausal woman physically, emotionally and mentally. Reflexology can help highlight areas of imbalance that need attention and provides a safe space for relaxation. Seek out an empathetic Reflexologist who understands the physical changes you are experiencing and takes your concerns seriously. A reflexology session for someone who is experiencing menopausal symptoms should focus on stimulating reflexes to the entire endocrine system, with special attention to the adrenals (important in hormone production), plus reflexes for head/brain and lower spine. Green smoothies can be a delicious way to alleviate symptoms. To reduce swelling and bloating, juicing with natural diuretics such as parsley, cucumber, celery, grapefruit, lemon and lime can be beneficial. Perspiration from hot flashes can result in fluid and mineral loss and must be replaced by drinking an adequate mineralized water volume.
Vegetable protein (versus animal source protein) contains phytoestrogens, which can imitate female hormones. Sprouts such as alfalfa, radish, broccoli and clover are loaded with plant estrogens. Calcium, magnesium and vitamin E containing foods including nuts, almonds, leafy green veggies and cold-pressed oils, along with foods rich in fiber, have also been known to reduce hot flashes. Omega-3 foods and legumes are beneficial for the inevitable mood swings.
Foods that aggravate hot flashes are typically acidifiers of the blood including meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine and of course alcohol. If you are a smoker, now is a very good time to stop for your health of course but it will also reduce hot flashes. Hope these simple but effective suggestions will help.

Giving people the gift of listening Each of us have a fundamental need to be valued, to be cared for and to be authentically heard. Giving people the gift of fully engaged listening is truly validating and affirming. Teddy Roosevelt said that: “The single most important ingredient to the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.” More than any single quality, what determines your success and effectiveness in life and in your work is how well you relate with people, how you value people, your connection with people. Dale Carnegie said: “Even in such technical lines as engineering, about 15% of one’s financial success is due one’s technical knowledge and about 85% is due to skill in human engineering, to personality and the ability to lead people.” Connecting with people is all about nurturing trust, fostering rapport, building bridges and giving them the gift of being fully heard. People long to be listened to, to be understood and to be known. We have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as speak! Most of us seek to be heard first and then to hear. This is backwards and ineffective. Stephen Covey, the author of The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People (Free Press, 1989), said that: “If I were to summarize in one sentence the single most important principle I have learned in the field of interpersonal relations, it would be this: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. This principle is the key to effective interpersonal communication.” There are five levels of listening. Take some time to selfassess and discover what you do most: 1. Not Listening - Outright ignoring or not really listening at all. 2. Pretend Listening - Listening on autopilot. 3. Selective Listening - Drifting in and out of the conversation, paying attention to only parts of it. 4. Attentive Listening - Actually making the effort to listen. 5. Emphatic Listening - Listening with intent to understand, to get inside the person’s frame of reference, seeking to understand them emotionally and intellectually, and listening beyond the apparent.
Also, we should not be so quick to give advice or to speak. There is often huge value in simply letting people vent. As Alexander Solshenitsen said: “The less you speak, the more you will hear.” As we look at listening better, we need to think about how we come across to others. Our body language is critical in the actual listening process and also in helping people to feel genuinely heard. A startling 90% of all our communication is non-verbal (what you say with your body, actions and expressions). This means that if we are to help people feel heard, we need to be visual. We must communicate it non-verbally with our eyes, facial expressions, posture and overall body language. Your energy flows to the other person from each of these very important ways. Be sure that your nonverbal messaging is the actual message you want to communicate. The Great Horned Mason © Bonnie Hood

At the core, each of us has a fundamental need to be valued and authentically heard. Learning to become a Certified Life or Executive Coach can empower you in this regard. When it comes to the highest level of listening, which is emphatic listening, there are a few actions steps which will empower us to do this well. First off, we need to really care - to look people in the eye, drop what we’re doing and put ourselves in their shoes. We also need to listen ‘between the lines’, to hear beyond their words. This involves listening to what is being said and listening to what is not being said. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Oracle Answer Before you read this page, think of a question you would like an oracle answer for.
The Empress by Kristel Rondeau The Empress is the archetype of the mother and all things nurturing.
The Legacy of the Divine Tarot © Cairo Marchetti (Published by Llewelyn in 2009)
The third card of the major Arcana, the Empress is all about newness, passion, love, creativity and birth of new ideas, as well as the birth or announcement of a child on the way (for some). This card is feminine but she is here for both men and women of all ages who want to feel more alive. The Empress is the ultimate mother. Her pregnant belly reminds us that we all came from somewhere. We all have mothers. Mothers are primary beings - without them, none of us would be here. From the very first moment of your creation, you were held ‘in utero’ by your mother. Whether her psyche and womb were loving, ambivalent or turbulent, she held you there until you were ready to be born. If you are here, you were meant to be here. Imagine for a moment that we all choose our parents. As soon as we are open to the idea that we are not the victim (of our parents, early upbringing or life circumstances), we open ourselves to the healing realm of curiosity, able to ask ourselves very important questions that can ultimately heal us. Start by asking yourself why you chose the mother you did. It’s easy to understand why anyone would choose a supportive and comforting mother. But what if you chose a mother that wasn’t that? Believe it or not, there are great gifts there too… What were the things that hurt or aggravated you the most about your mother? What were the things that you admired the most? What are the gifts you learned from all of that? No mother and child were ever mistakenly matched. There is a deep love, learning and evolutionary growth that happens simultaneously between the two. The Empress/mothers, ideally, are about nurturing. I have many mother figures in my life. Mother figures do not have to be blood related. They can be a teacher who helps you to succeed, a friend who lets you melt down, a co-worker who shares her lunch when you have forgotten yours or a sister who has your back no matter what. Every ‘mother’ that has come into my life has taught me something, made me stronger, helped me in some way to become who I am today. Who are these women in your life? What have they shown you about yourself?
24
Mosaic Magazine — Summer 2013
As nurturing is a key element of the Empress, taking care of yourself is going to be very important for you now (even if you just start with a few minutes each day). There are many of us who take care of so many other people in our lives and sometimes we lose track and forget about ourselves. Taking time to recharge ourselves is very important. If we don’t take time to do this we may burn out and it will be more challenging to help others. When we hurt, the Empress is there to help us. The animals in this card show a deep trust in her. Some of us may have forgotten how to trust, especially those who have been deeply wounded by their own mother or grandmother. If you have trust issues that are holding you back from getting the things you really want in life, the Empress is telling you to resolve these issues. Do you need to see a counsellor, have healing bodywork or www.MosaicMagazine.ca

release your pain by journaling? We can’t accept the abundance of the Universe if we don’t have trust. Also, if you are drawn to an animal in this card, pay attention; there may be extra messages for you to investigate by exploring the mystical gifts of those animals. Even in the dark times the Empress is all about bringing in beauty to shift your reality, using all five of your senses. If you’re having a bad day, purposely go out into the world and find something beautiful to bring into your home to change your vibration. Play beautiful music, prepare a new dish you’ve never tried, buy fragrant flowers, have a therapeutic Epsom salt bath or get a manicure - do whatever makes you feel nurtured. The Empress symbolizes new beginnings, creativity, giving birth to new ideas or starting that project you have kept in the back of your mind. What would you love to do if you had all the time and money in the world? The Empress is telling you to pursue your dreams and passions. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Whatever your dreams, follow them. The Empress also shows us that abundance is all around us. There may be a fear behind this for some. The first step is to honestly acknowledge what you have to be grateful for. The Law of Attraction states that what we focus on will be multiplied, so why not make it a practice to multiply what is good in your life. Start by just writing down five things a day, every day, and see what this practice of gratitude does to increase abundance in your life. If your question is about ‘general guidance’, the answer is to let go of past hurts. Be reborn into a new you! What is it you want more of in your life? Go for it. Add some spice into your life - now is the time to claim your passion for whatever it is you love to do! If your question is about your kids, this is a time for both moms and dads to nurture and support. Open the lines of communication and let your kids know that you are
www.MosaicMagazine.ca
there for them no matter how young or old they are and that you’ll always be their parent. Everyone has their own journey in life and sometimes your kids may make a choice that doesn’t work out like they wanted. In that case, you’ll be needed when things get rough and that is when your Empress energy will shine through and help soothe the way. If your question was about job or career, there are a couple of things. If you feel stuck in your job and are thinking about a change it may be time to see what else is out there for you. For some, you may feel this is impossible and that’s okay. Right now you might want to start that hobby you’ve put in the back of your mind. Daydream or brainstorm for ideas to get you to the next level. Get creative and see what happens! If you were wondering about relationship and love, there is luck and abundance. If it’s a new relationship there is a lot of excitement around you. This is when we tend to be open to new ideas and see things more brightly. Have fun with it! If you are asking about a marriage or how a long-term relationship is going, this card indicates that this is a love that is strong, with a lovely flow of giving and receiving in a balanced manner. A couple of words of warning though - the Empress is a very fertile card so if you’re not wanting to be pregnant, take precautions. Also, sometimes the ‘nurturing’ of the Empress can spill into ‘mothering’ your partner. Remember that this is your lover and not your child; nurture the relationship in a way that feels enlivening to both parties. No matter what your question, the Empress is a positive sign of new beginnings. May the love and support of the Empress help guide your way. Esoteric Explorations
Let’s begin at the root chakra by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist We begin our journey through the chakras at the root - our foundation. How secure, safe and strong we feel will determine our view of the world and our position in it. When, in our body-mind we feel grounded, flexible, strong and secure, we have an outer world that supports that vision. When we internally feel weak, fearful or unsupported, our foundations collapse, which often leads to health and financial issues.
as superiority/inferiority, the have’s and have not’s and our fears and prejudices that support our limiting beliefs. If we are still alive as adults, we have all learned to survive and developed ongoing strategies to ensure our survival. One can be to dominate or be dominated. The dominator will ensure that they hold the strongest physical, monetary or powerful position as a way of surviving in the world which can often lead to overtaking someone else’s rights/possessions. The dominated will go along with whatever they have to, no longer feeling strong within themselves, in order to survive. Until there is a paradigm shift with an individual, family, culture or global vision, the survival strategy of “I am right, have the most power, therefore will impose my way on you” switches back and forth between the perpetrator and the victims.
We individually and collectively have a root chakra which is why when fear and insecurity abound in the world, due to changing global paradigms or weak leadership, collective flu’s, colds and epidemics have fertile ground to grow in.
Sometimes an inner perception shift will have us making changes to our body, home or finances. If that is the case make sure that you are involved in practices that make you feel strong, stable and flexible in your body-mind. This will allow you to reorganize your world at an appropriate pace that allows change and stability to co-exist.
What does the right ‘to be’ mean? It means firstly that regardless of the type of sexual act your parents participated in that led to your conception, you are meant to be here. Whether you were planned or the result of a happy/unhappy accident, you have the right to be here. If you are on the earth plane, you are meant to be. Secondly it means no matter what your sex, color, cultural, religion, philosophical beliefs or geographical location is, you have the ‘right to be’. The right ‘to have’ translates into either “I have a physical body, home and finances that support me” or “I don’t.” Often physical lack (health or material) comes from a kink within the clarity and understanding of my and others right ‘to be’. In other words we experience a lack of clarity around the above which shows itself in the world

Each chakra has a law/right that governs it. The right associated with the root chakra is “the right to be and the right to have.”
The pace of the root chakra is slower. It is associated with the earth element and the ability to physically manifest. You may, in your mind’s eye, want to build a house, improve your health or change your financial picture, however it takes time to make it happen in the physical world. To understand this, think of the time involved between the idea of building a house as opposed to how long it takes for that house to be seen in the world. When you have ongoing symptoms of a weakness in your root chakra, look to family of origin beliefs and their perception regarding their right ‘to have’ and ‘be’. Remember your bodymind was being formed in your mother’s womb and during your formative years. If she and the people around her lived in a state of fear and lack, it had an effect on you. These symptoms may appear as constant physical break down, the inability to have a strong supportive financial picture or www.MosaicMagazine.ca

prejudice and intolerance for any person, belief or idea that is different from yours. HOMEWORK: In a non-judgemental way (this will allow for more inner honesty) look at what your physical world is reflecting back to you. Do you have a strong healthy body that supports you? Are you taking care of yourself in a way that ensures future health? Look to the foods you consistently eat, physical activity and the environment you live in. Do you live in an environment of intolerance for other worldviews or rights? Do you trust (different than blind faith) in your ability to both support yourself and be supported (inner and outer resources)? Is fear a constant companion in the choices you make (example: I say yes to this because of fear of… or I say no to this because of fear of…?) Are you a bully or feel bullied? When there are changes in the world, are you caught up in mob fear and panic? In that type of scenario how long does it take you to regain your stability and grounding? (How I define being stable and grounded is… in your body, centered in the present time and place, your mind and body acting as one congruent unit.) After you read this article, if you feel you need a tune up or a major overhaul in your foundation proceed with tolerance, patience, and kindness but do take action. As you begin to take care of your body in a more loving manner, chat with the part of you that is out of sync with your intention for stability and security. Sometimes it helps to imagine that part as a confused part or simply an uneducated part of you. As you would with a child, keep repeating the new positive belief you want to instill, reinforcing it with congruent actions (do as I do, not as I say) and as the need arises, get help. Each night before you fall asleep take a few calming breaths and gently whisper to your inner baby (there is one that lives within each of us): "It is okay, I have you. You are safe and secure." Creating imaginary worlds with art by Iryna Karpenko The creative process has always provided a safe haven for me. From early childhood I remember my excitement when I realized my ability to draw, to create an imaginary world where I could escape the monotonous reality. Born in Kyiv, capital of Ukraine, my growing interest in art led me to the Kyiv College of Industrial Arts and then to the Ukrainian Academy of Fine Art and Architecture. I worked as an illustrator for different publishing houses and children’s magazines. In Ukraine my artworks got me a Laureate title at the United Nations 50th Anniversary Painting Competition and a Second Prize at the Ukrainian Poster Biennial. My artwork is based on impressions from a mixture of different stories, songs and legends which surround our real and imagined, natural and cultural, historic and prehistoric lives. Some of my subjects derive from Ukrainian mythology and ancient fairytales. Others can be interpreted as an intricate combination of elements from different epochs and cultures.
Roses in Bloom © Iryna Karpenko
Fascinated with many art mediums, I split my preference between several art techniques such as watercolor, gouache, acrylic and printmaking. Attracted by playing with small elements, I like to design an elaborate work with a lot of details.

I now live in Edmonton. Impressed by new opportunities here in Canada, I came up with a new technique - art on glass which allows me to mix what I’ve learned in etching with my watercolor skills. In 2008 my artworks were selected for a permanent exhibit at The Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton.

(Italian) With heart and soul
Messages from the ‘Other Side’ Today, I turned 50-years-old. I awoke to my telephone ringing at 8:30 a.m. I thought my husband (who was diligently working in Fort McMurray) was having a bit of fun with me by calling so early, on my big birthday, on a Sunday morning. So, I didn’t expect to hear the message I heard. It was from my Auntie Mary (my mother’s only sister), who has never, in all my 50 years, called me on my birthday or really had anything much to do with me. I didn’t even know that she knew when I was born. But today she left me a message, wishing me a ‘Happy Birthday’, telling me she thinks of me and loves me. I couldn’t help it - I cried. Her message was so out of the norm, so out of the blue, that I was stunned by it. In fact, I did not feel this message was from my auntie, even though it was from her. I felt this was a message from my Mom, from the ‘Other Side’. My Mom ALWAYS called bright and early on the morning of our birthdays and I know that my Mom would have thought my 50th birthday was a big milestone. One of the very few times I ever heard from this auntie (in my life) was on the first anniversary of my Mom’s death when I mysteriously got a package in the mail. It was a beautiful doll with long, lovely curly hair (like my only daughter, Gabrielle), that was dressed in a Ukrainian dance outfit. When I called to thank her, my Auntie Mary told me that my Mom had asked her to make Gabrielle a doll like this (about a year before she died) because Gabrielle was learning Ukrainian dance. This really touched me. I felt like my Mom had mystically orchestrated the whole thing, so that on the first anniversary of her death, both Gabrielle and I would receive such a special gift in memory of her. If you knew how fragile I was feeling at that time about my Mom, this was a huge gift for me. I’m trying to remember the first time I realized that there was something missing between my Mom and I (on a deeper emotional level) but I think I always felt it. It wasn’t that she wasn’t loving, because she was. She was one of the kindest and most generous people I’ve ever known and I admired that very much about her. But she wouldn’t let herself go to any emotional depths - not just with me, but with anyone. Now I see that it wasn’t personal, but at the time, deep down,

I did take it personally. I thought there was something wrong with me. While my Mom was alive I tried in my own way to change our relationship into what I longed for it to be. We had a big breakthrough one afternoon when I was 29 that literally changed my life. But 15 years later (just months before she died), when I thanked her for that day, saying it was the most important thing she ever said to me, she didn’t even remember it happening. I suppose that was when I accepted ‘it’ wouldn’t happen while she was alive. Still, I hoped that in death, somehow God/Universe would help her and I to have a breakthrough that I would feel/sense (or come through my dream world). But, years later, I’ve only had one dream with her in it that felt significantly profound and even then, it was less than what I’ve always longed for. Ukrainian Madonna © Iryna Karpenko

And then one day, I thought… maybe she couldn’t do it. Maybe I was asking for too much. Maybe she did the best she could with what she knew and it wasn’t a ‘statement’ at all about how she felt about me. Maybe she was just wounded, and growing and learning, like me and everyone else.
I think that the most important relationships we have, honor both people’s growth and learning. While my Mom was learning her stuff, I was learning mine in unison; I believe I even picked her (and she picked me) for that exact reason. We were a perfect match, like all mothers and children. The more that I heal and understand my Mom and her wounds, and my own wounds, the more wonderful signs/messages I’ve literally have gotten from the ‘Other Side’, including this last one from my auntie/Mom. When I called my Auntie Mary to thank her for her most unexpected message, I asked her what made her call me. She told me that when she woke up, she ‘somehow’ remembered it was my birthday, and then felt inspired to call me. I think the Spirit world often uses other people to pass along messages of love from the ‘Other Side’. Thanks Mom… I really miss you.
