In this Mosaic… Then many years later I became a student (and fan) of Catherine Potter who is an amazing astrologist and teacher. Through Catherine I discovered that there is so much more to astrology. From a detailed astrological chart based on my birth date, birth time and birth location, she honed into information that was pertinent just for me (not just for every Aquarian out there). Recently I had another private astrology session with Catherine. She told me about a certain cycle I am going through and also tied it into what I came into this life time to learn. When she explained some parts in a different way (which she is very gifted at), I absolutely resonated with the information.

boccabellaphoto.com

When I say resonated, I mean it. When I got what she was saying, it literally (physically) rippled through my body. It was so amazing! It was absolutely up there with some of the top mystical experiences I’ve ever had.

by Connie Brisson I’ve been trying to remember how my interest in the mystical world began. I grew up on a farm, in a Catholic family, in a rural area northeast of Alberta in the small community of Iron River and there was nothing mystical going on there (for me anyway). The only thing I can think of that even resembled mystical would have been the astrology forecasts in the newspaper or in magazines that I would sometimes read. And, I didn’t feel any great affinity to it. In fact, I had this love/hate relationship with those astrology forecasts. On one hand, I was drawn to read them and then, once I did, I was so scared that they might come true (most of them had something to be wary about for the next month…) and that made me anxious, waiting for it. I honestly didn’t understand what astrology was about at that time. But yet, there was another part of me that was so drawn to the idea of there being something deeper to life, something mystical. It was a few years afterwards, as a young adult, I started buying astrology books to see what it was all about. But, despite all the interesting things I read that intrigued me, it seemed odd to me that anything that groups so many people together (just because they were all born within a certain time frame each month) could have any real substance.

In the session I had an ‘aha’ about a difficult, emotionally painful dynamic I’ve been going through over the last year or so, but which really goes way back, having consumed a large portion of my life. Part of what changed me was finally receiving an answer (inside of myself) to the question I’ve been asking for all these years: “Why is this happening to me? Why did I attract this into my life?” But more importantly, the ‘aha’ allowed me to see something from a different point of view, one that gave me compassion for others involved, and also for myself, and for the way that we all try to cope in difficult circumstances where there sometimes is no ‘perfect’ answer. How do any of us really change and grow? Honestly, I think we change when we hear the truth, some wisdom. And I think ‘truth’ often comes from mystical experiences. For some people, it is when they are walking. For some, it’s when they are doing yoga or getting a Reiki or other body-work session. And for others, it’s when they are having personal, transformative readings like astrology, tarot or psychic, etc. Our guest speaker for our next Mosaic Mystic Meeting is the lovely Catherine Potter, (www.catherinepotter.ca). She will be discussing how to use astrology as a tool for personal growth. Please bring a used/new gift-wrapped book to give away in our book exchange. Email me by JUNE 3 at mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca if you can come. Cost: $20 (cash at the door) at Lucina Centre 9505 - 163 Street, Edmonton, at 7:00 p.m. Last of all, I want to sincerely thank Oksana Zhelisko for the beautiful painting she did of our daughter, Gabrielle, which graces this cover of Mosaic. I marvel at this painting every day in my home. I am in awe of Oksana’s talent and also of Gabbey’s beauty, both external and internal. This will be a treasure in our family forever. I’m so, so, so grateful.

I’m an Aquarian and like all the of zodiac signs, there are certain characteristics that define us. But I also know Aquarians that are absolutely not anything like me.

Body awareness and trauma Rosen Method Bodywork (RMB) is a type of somatic bodywork that helps people to access and integrate long forgotten or unconscious physical/emotional holding patterns through body awareness. What do I mean by body awareness? Body awareness is a person’s sense of awareness within their bodies via the afferent neuropathways of their nervous system; or in other words, a person’s felt experience of themselves. Most people are under the impression that they have access to their entire body’s awareness when in reality they have access to varying degrees of awareness in various places within their bodies. In fact, there can be many places within a person’s body that are unknown to them. Muscles can be working in excess without a person realizing it until eventually the body’s chronic tension, pain or stress become a bigger health problem. How does this happen and why? When a person experiences a state of intense stress (emotional and/or physical) and the fight/flight/freeze ‘play dead’ nervous system response is triggered, the brain sends signals out all over the body in an effort to create the best survival actions necessary for the situation. Muscles tighten or collapse and breath quickens or freezes, becoming very shallow. Our bodies prepare stances that can change within seconds if needed. This is a normal function of survival and it happens to all people throughout their lifetime with varying frequency and intensity depending on their life circumstance. In this way trauma is a part of everyday life. A healthy way to recover from trauma is to reconnect with other people through emotional support (verbal) and the comfort of empathetic, loving touch (non-manipulative) such as hand holding or having an arm around your shoulder. It is important that the person who is providing comfort is doing so in a way that is calming and asks nothing of the traumatized person. When a person does not receive this kind of support after a trauma response has been activated and is left on their own to cope with their experience, their body

6

remains longer in its survival state. If left for a prolonged period of time the body takes on the survival stance, as its familiar everyday way of being in the world. Muscles do not let go of their tension but instead hold on in an effort to support the survival stance. Stances can be experienced as being tough or defiant, being vigilant or hyper-alert, pleasing or invisible, all as an effort to avoid danger and survive. Eventually over time the person loses the awareness of those parts of their bodies that are working hard to keep up the survival stance and the afferent neuropathways shut down, meaning we literally lose awareness of certain places in our bodies. Why does this happen? In short, our bodies are wired (via our nervous system) for connection. Our bodies, when in close proximity, literally talk to each other without language via the nervous system. We learn to self-regulate within our own bodies through coregulation with another body/person. This begins in infancy when, as babies, we are held by our mothers or other loving caregiver. Self-regulation is our body's ability to know what our needs are and to then take the necessary action required to make sure our needs get met, maintaining a state of balance. Those needs can be physical, emotional, mental or spiritual or some combination of all of those.

by Cinnamon Cranston Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner

When we do not receive co-regulation with another person through empathetic touch and emotional support after an intensely stressful experience (trauma) then our capacity to selfregulate lessens and our bodies maintain the survival stance we needed at the time. For more information on this research please see Dr. Alan Fogel’s book, The Psychophysiology of Self Awareness: Rediscovering the Lost Art of Body Sense (W.W. Norton, 2009). body are the emotions and sensations connected to the original experience that were not properly integrated. Pieces of the person (physical/mental/emotional) remain hidden from their awareness waiting to be rediscovered and resolved. Rosen Method Bodywork helps to address this problem within people. By using a non-manipulative, present touch, by tracking the nervous system via the breath in the body and using words (which speak to the response in the body), RMB helps people to access awareness of parts of themselves long forgotten. Integration happens as a result of becoming aware of the holding pattern and any emotion that may be connected to it while receiving the supportive and safe touch of another person specifically trained to work in this way. In other words the person has the opportunity to connect with their past experience and not be alone in it creating the possibility for integration of the experience both physically and emotionally. Occasionally a larger emotional issue will be uncovered and psychotherapy may be recommended for further processing support. Obviously, Rosen Method Bodywork practitioners are not therapists however RMB does work well in conjunction with psychotherapy, assisting with the integration and healing of body, mind and spirit for people who have not received the support they needed to recover from their trauma experiences. For myself, RMB has made a tremendous difference in how I live and experience my day-to-day life. When I was 30-years-old, mother of a toddler and pregnant with my second child, I came to the realization (with the help of my mother) that I did indeed have unresolved trauma from my childhood.

in my subconscious gradually came into my awareness for integration and release. Physically I began to experience a degree of body awareness that I had not had before or at least not since I was a small child. I felt my body shift and change - less tension, easier fuller breath, calmer. I could feel myself move through my life with less anxiety and adapt to daily stresses with more ease. My tendency to overreact when I felt threatened completely shifted. As I became more present and in the moment, I could problem solve more effectively. I felt empowered to make choices for myself that I had not been able to before such as taking time to create (painting, singing, photography and writing) and taking time for sports (training/competing as a masters track and field athlete). More importantly I could navigate my relationships more easily. Old behaviors of co-dependency were easier to notice and shift. During the training practitioners are required to do a lot of their own personal work; our effectiveness as a practitioner is relative to our willingness to heal ourselves. As a practitioner I still continue to receive the work. There is always something to be discovered that I had not known before. I love that I have chosen a profession that keeps me honest and invites me to heal myself first. Previously, I had no idea that being raised by an active alcoholic mother (until I was eight years old) was in itself a traumatic experience. There were large swaths of time missing from my memory as a child for the first 10 years of my life. At 30, I began to see the signs of strain on my psyche as I entered the journey of parenthood. The following eight years I spent in both psychotherapy and Integrative Body Psychotherapy, working through all the issues I could remember. My life got a lot better. However, I still experienced periods of Post Traumatic Stress symptoms that I had a difficult time connecting to a trigger and even if I did, I couldn’t resolve the effects within my body. Anxiety was still a problem. I still experienced extended periods of hyper vigilance (survival mode) and even though I could manage it, I wanted resolution! My therapist then recommended I try RMB. I thought: “This could be really amazing or horrible” and so I didn’t go at first. One day, after another bout of anxiety that I could not connect to any memory, I decided to give it a try. Receiving RMB helped me to access more of myself. By bringing more awareness to my body, RMB helped me to experience what safety feels like and the possibility of trusting my body and its sensations without being overwhelmed. I felt like I was more present and in my body. Old feelings occasionally arose and could be released. Forgotten memories and feelings that had been www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Tarot offers wisdom and alchemy angel, trusting that transformative deep inner work is occurring and a new birth is being alchemized within us.

Each card in the tarot offers wisdom. Every card has powerful images which evoke feelings, ideas, stories and memories.

When you’re dealing with a polarity in your life, the Temperance card is a wonderful helper to bring into meditation. With eyes closed, see the card before you and let it grow until it becomes a doorway. Then open the door and enter into the card. Let yourself receive the teachings and guidance available there; don’t be afraid to ask questions. Repeat this meditation once per week until you feel a resolution within yourself.

In ancient times the cards were used as portals, actual meeting places where a seeker could receive guidance and support from spiritual beings. In present day this way of working with the tarot has mainly been lost; the cards are primarily now seen as a fortune telling device. I have a passion for reawakening the ancient uses of the tarot in combination with its more common oracular functions. I know the tarot can be a powerful tool in helping us to shift issues in our lives. Think of an area in your life where you are struggling. Perhaps you have a choice to make and you’re not sure which option to choose or maybe you’ve been laid off from your job and want to find meaningful work. The major arcana card number 14, Temperance, can be helpful in these situations. Temperance is located in the tarot deck between Death (card 13) and the Devil (card 15). The location of Temperance in the deck gives us a clue to the powerful assistance it offers when our life is challenged with loss, imbalance and unexpected upheaval. Temperance is the only card in the deck that has a large angel on it (without the presence of people or animals). Immediately upon looking at the card we know that help is being offered. When we are in difficulty we often want an immediate answer or we step into the position of ‘control’, using our will to force the outcome. But the wisdom of this card offers a different possibility. A liquid is being poured back and forth between two golden chalices. These chalices represent a polarity in one’s life. For example, I’ve been laid off from my job (one polarity / chalice) and I want a new, better job (the other polarity / chalice). The angel isn’t favoring one chalice - rather she/he is mixing the liquids of both together.

by Skye MacLachlan Feng Shui Consultant

Or another way to invite the energy of Temperance into your life would be to create a collage and divide it into three parts. On the left choose images and words that represent one possibility, on the right place images that reflect the other possibility and in the middle leave an open space for alchemy to occur. Alchemy is the new birth that unfolds as the polarities are mixed and integrated by Spirit (the angel). When we lean into Spirit and trust, Temperance reveals that great rewards await us, demonstrated by the glowing golden crown atop the mountains at the back of the card.

This September is the beginning of a new three year Tarot Certificate Program that I’ll be teaching, meeting one day per month. I love to base my teaching on the principles of the ancient Mystery Schools. At the end of the three years, the tarot will have synthesized and transmuted within you, alchemizing new gifts that only the angel of Temperance can truly foresee. If you feel the tarot beckoning, contact me for more information: skyedreamhorse@shaw.ca Skye has specialized in Feng Shui for the home and business for over 30 years. She teaches Feng Shui, Tarot and Dreamwork at the Northern Star College of Mystical Studies in Edmonton, www.northernstarcollege.com or 780-447-3667.

In alchemy something new rises out of the polarity. Should I do this or should I do that? Perhaps the angel is showing us that neither choice is correct. We are invited to be patient and lean into the love and support of the

The funeral I will never forget by Abe Brown Certified Master Coach Trainer I once went to a funeral that I will never forget. Even though it happened over a decade ago, I remember it like it was yesterday.

A Journey’s End © Lorraine Shulba

I was a 23-year-old ordained minister (before getting into my current career as a leadership and executive coach, I spent 12 years as a full-time pastor). I was used to conducting funeral services packed full, often with hundreds in attendance. These funerals became celebrations of the life and contributions of the one who had passed. Though there was sadness, there was also gratitude for the life lived and its contributions.

authentically loving. When we do that, we attract quality people to ourselves. Connecting with people on a surface level leads to surface level living, surface level loving, and surface-level results. Part of this is determining to leave a positive footprint on the world. This sort of determination causes us to act like what we do makes a difference, because in reality, it actually does! The meaning of life is to find your gift, and yet the purpose of life is to give it away. Heart-centred and successful people make a difference in the people around them, and are remembered and celebrated. In the end, this is how I believe we will be evaluated: “Was I a giver and not just a taker? Was I a person who plants and not just someone who harvests? Did I seek to serve and not just to be served? Was gratitude my steady response or entitlement? And in the end, did my giving and planting and thanking and serving actually do anything that will last beyond this moment?” Let’s live in this moment, but aim for an impact beyond just this moment. Since that funeral, over a decade ago, I have not lived a perfect life; far from it. But for me, it’s been pretty simple. Live fully. Love authentically. Serve gratefully. Lead effectively, with or without a title. And, make a difference. I coach my clients to do the same.

But this funeral was different. I was called by one of our local funeral homes to conduct a service for an older gentleman who had passed away. Because I did not know him, I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I arrived, I was shocked to see an open casket, with just one mourner in attendance. I checked my watch and made sure I wasn’t early. Actually, I was five minutes late. I waited 10 minutes to see if anyone else would arrive. Then at 11:15 a.m., I began the service to celebrate and remember a life of more than 70 years. I went through the motions of that funeral service, but I was forever changed. I couldn’t imagine living 70 years, and connecting with so few people that there would be only one attendee at my funeral. That event shook me to my core and I resolved that I wanted to build a life that was full of life, full of love and making a difference.

The funeral that I will never forget, more than anything, was a reminder to me that this moment matters. Today matters. Tomorrow matters. And if this moment matters, then I matter. You matter. And when we live like we matter, our impact grows and our reach expands. Lives are healed, transformed and empowered. We got this. Let’s go do it! Maya Angelou understood this when she said that: “Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away.” You see, true kindness is loving people with abundance and authenticity. When we treat each moment as precious and valuable and each interaction with another person as unique and distinctive, we are fully living and

Opening the doors to healing by Norma J. Hope Certified Biofeedback Specialist

wasn’t long before I had absolutely no memory that I had a first father and another brother. I stopped feeling.

I know, from having lived it, that chronic physical conditions like constipation, pain, fatigue, plus others, can all be symptoms resulting from underlying emotional trauma in childhood.

It has not been an easy journey but it has honestly been worth every tear to be able to remember and feel the joy of being me. I only ‘existed’ before, never truly living my life.

A child feels everything viscerally. Trauma always causes a tightening physically in the body somewhere. Not being allowed to feel and express what one is feeling is traumatic. This is the beginning of disconnecting from our body and our loss of sense of self, which also sets up chronic physical conditions. This is also why we don’t remember parts of our childhood. I didn’t remember anything from before I turned 15. I didn’t even remember I had a first father and another brother. Doing Colon Hydrotherapy in 1997 healed my chronic constipation, low back pain and other symptoms. That ignited my passion to do it professionally. But even more astounding was that it made me aware of how disconnected I had been all my life. It opened the door to deeply buried feelings, which started my journey of healing.

My passion to find out who I really was inside (personally and professionally) got started with those Colon Hydrotherapy sessions. I had been a workaholic, independent insurance adjuster previous to that. And the journey continued with other therapies that I became certified in because they changed my life in some way.

Trauma has many causes, including not being heard and seen, especially from birth to six years old. That is devastating to a child, causing so much confusion emotionally. In addition, it deregulates your nervous systems due to constant fight, flight or freeze reactions occurring when you were not heard.

I did reconnect with my first dad before he died. I know deep inside that he loved me. My oldest brother and I have cried a lot together. He also told me about my dad hiring private investigators for years to try to find us kids.

Lymph Drainage Therapy got me in touch with a gentleness in me I never knew existed. Biofeedback Stress Reduction Therapy is amazing for identifying how you feel especially when you don’t know. It retrains and reduces the emotional, physical, mental and spiritual stress caused by life including past trauma.

I have the privilege of helping to open the door for others. I love who I am and what I do for adults and especially child clients. In 1961, I was taken from my home in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan (along with four, out of five, siblings) by my mother while my dad and oldest brother were away in another town for that day. I was three and a half years old. She took us to meet her boyfriend, where we were all loaded into his vehicle and drove to Ontario. In Ontario, I was given to neighbors everyday who were strangers to me. I remember being devastated and so confused. Dad had disappeared. My mom was gone every day. All the feelings I was having (at the time) were not allowed. I got spanked by mom if I cried or if I asked where daddy was. I was told to call the boyfriend ‘dad’. It www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Natural Healing “I get so anxious when certain people (that I care about) start complaining about their lives. My stomach gets in knots and I even hold my breath when they are being negative. I want to be supportive and listen, but it can actually make me feel sick listening to them, often because it’s the same old problems, over and over, and no matter what I say to them, it doesn’t make any difference. What can I do to help myself not be so affected and remain peaceful inside when I’m listening to them?” SK, Edmonton by Melissa Robak Crystal & Gem Store Owner It can be frustrating to watch the people you care about seemingly running in circles, but it’s important to realize that every person is on their own journey in this life. If you ‘fix’ their problems for them, or feed them the answers, they will continue in circles until they discover the proper route for themselves. Embrace the fact that your job is to listen and to let them talk their way into discovering the best route for their situation. It is not an easy path, but here are some great stones to help you along the way. Black tourmaline will repel negativity and keep you grounded, making conversations easier. Garnet has long been carried as a talisman and is thought to bring peace and tranquility. I find by Jane Thomas Registered Massage Therapist I would first recognize this as an opportunity to heal something within myself as we are all mirrors for each other and to be aware that the bigger the trigger, the deeper our own wound, and the bigger opportunity for healing. It’s great that you recognize where in your body you are feeling the response (your stomach and how it feels in knots). This is a big clue. Also it’s great to recognize that you hold your breath. You’re half way to healing simply by being aware of where you hold the tension in your body. I would let go of trying to change the other person’s perspective. Instead I would focus entirely on your own response and staying as present to yourself and to the person you care about. by Jackie Pearce Wholistic Practitioner - Facilitator of Awareness For me, this is speaks of needing better personal energetic boundaries. When we are centered, we are able to see others, to observe rather than to participate. This allows us to be present, to have compassion and to be a wonderful friend and listener without the transference of their ‘stuff’ becoming ours. I suggest doing this exercise daily and as often as needed. Make an effort to do this before you will be interacting with someone who brings these feelings out in you. Stand up tall, really tall. Feel yourself as a mountain, a very sturdy base with a deep foundation. Feel the strength you exude. Make sure you are pulling your shoulders back and

garnet to be an excellent stone for stressful situations, bringing a quiet strength to any environment. I would also recommend a quartz cluster with multiple points. They are excellent for bringing people and ideas together. Blue lace agate is an exceptionally good stone for communication. It will allow you to gently bring your opinions forward at the right time. Chamomile or fennel essential oil is ideal for invoking a relaxation response, especially in your gut. I would also use peppermint and maybe a eucalyptus to encourage your own breathing. A good body spray that includes either spikenard or vetiver with marjoram and sage essential oils can help in creating a grounding effect for you which could aid in creating a healthy boundary for you, energetically. The suggested oils will help with you stay grounded and help ease your discomfort in your gut. The truth, shared with respect and an open heart is always the healing way. Now, you want to become aware of your feet, which are at the base of your mountain. Keeping your solar plexus activated, allow that energy to flow down your legs and into your feet. See this energy spread out to the whole base of your mountain and circulate up the sides of your mountain all the way to your peak (crown chakra). Then draw the energy back to your solar plexus chakra. Repeat as necessary. Intentional forgiveness Intentional forgiveness is the desire for our natural state to be seen and experienced, and the willingness to take initiative in that direction. We naturally seek resolve. It is programed into us on a cellular level to direct our energy towards being in balance. Minute by minute, day by day, our body is working towards creating this state; it is actually called homeostasis. It is no different on an energetic level. We are, after all, spirit in form and the two are not separate from the whole. When we have experiences from our past that are unresolved, our being (often on a subconscious level) does all it can to signal us as to how we may ‘solve’ these issues, so it can release the weight of their energy and once again come into balance.

looking for is how it shows up on an energetic and symbolic level for you, so I encourage you to use all of your senses to notice and gather this information (sight, smell, touch, sound and knowing). I guide you to notice who is connected to the issue by witnessing and observing what you see within your body; then asking questions which explore how this is impacting you now and what needs to be said or expressed to change it. The rest of the process is shaped around helping you to move the energy that has blocked you from experiencing forgiveness. Honoring it through expression does this. It holds old stories of pain, which though they may not be true now, need to be spoken aloud, observed or felt in order to soften their energy into a natural state of balance. This could include speaking to myself or a partner if we are in a group, (as though they were the person you need to speak to), sacred dance/movement, creation of a power symbol as an offering for a fire ceremony, a death ceremony or the creation of a personal mandala with objects from nature. When we are stuck with a particular issue, the energy tied up in its story is what blocks us from moving forward. This is generally laden with powerful litigations as to why we can’t forgive the other person or the circumstances attached to the issue. Fears of feeling powerless, being retraumatized, having to face another or ourselves, are often greater than the messages from our body to heal.

Each exercise helps us to notice the parts of ourselves which have been hiding under the weight of being stuck. The more willing we are to express what is true and authentic for us, the lighter our load becomes and the deeper our awareness grows.

Eventually we become aware of this - where the choice to forgive is greater than the fear of what that will look like.

Intentional forgiveness offers us an approach (to ourselves and the world) that initiates a co-creative balance, respects the elements that brought us here today and values the medicine which may be created through this act.

That moment came for me 10 years after my mother was murdered, when it became apparent that I would only feel whole and complete with her death if I began an intentional forgiveness process (energetically) with the person who killed her, reclaiming my power and adding wisdom, value and meaning to my experience. The choice literally changed my life forever.

I use similar strategies in my one-to-one practice or in my Trauma as Medicine Retreat. Whether it is group or individual, each process begins with a verbal intention to create forgiveness around the issue and a prayer to be open to how that may show up, recognizing that often this is different from what we may expect. Then I use the shamanic journey to guide you. This is essentially a led meditation, where I use my voice and a hand drum to help you move with ease into your subconscious mind. It is here that you can become aware of what this issue feels like in your body. What we are

Breaking the biggest story in 2000 years As one reads the daily papers or watches the evening news, it is hard to imagine how our world could have arrived at such a dangerous state. At every turn we hear of wars, economic strife or catastrophic climate change. Hunger and famine stalk the peoples of the Earth and poverty now engulfs the lives of more than half the population of this planet. Humanity now stands at a critical time in its spiritual development facing a historical crisis of Herculean proportion. The backdrop to this momentous time is a confluence of several great cycles of change. Whether we relate to the movement from the Age of Pisces to the Age of Aquarius, or to the transition from the Kali Yuga (Dark Age) to the Satya Yuga (Golden Age), the great energies which have influenced the characteristics of our civilization are now in tremendous flux and transition. With the advent of this new cycle, a new light is dawning and a great invocation by humanity has gone out to the Universe for help and healing. That call, as in past ages, has been answered, and summoned forth another great teacher for this emerging age. All major religions today expect the return of some “Awaited One.” Christians await the return of the Christ, Jews expect the Messiah, Muslims await the Imam Mahdi, while Hindus anticipate the arrival of Lord Krishna or the Kalki Avatar. Buddhists expect the 5th Buddha and, in fact, they have his name - Maitreya - correct. What these major traditions do not realise as of yet is the simple truth that they all await the same one individual - a world teacher who embodies their highest hopes and expectations.

of love will enter the hearts of all and demonstrate the fact of our oneness with nature and each other while, at the same time, galvanising humanity to save the world. Millions of people will experience spontaneous healings, whether physical, emotional or psychological. Maitreya will present humanity with two alternative scenarios of the future - either continue in the selfish greedy ways of the present and destroy ourselves, or embrace the experience of our own divine nature and accept the “Principle of Sharing and Justice” in order to create a brilliant new civilisation where all may participate equally. This will lead to rapid change in all areas of life on this planet. Our current civilization will redirect itself toward the ending of poverty and to ensuring the welfare of the planet for future generations. So quick will these changes occur that, for many, anxiety and bewilderment will be the major response. Nevertheless, change will occur and many of the trials facing us today will rapidly disappear under the new spiritual stimulus felt within the hearts and minds of people everywhere. At no other time in history has such a vast and sweeping change occurred, and the opportunity presented to us promises a truly bright and hopeful future for humanity. Maitreya, the World Teacher, is now here and will soon demonstrate to the world the living fact of our divinity. In one single world event, experienced by each and every one of us simultaneously, we will experience our own soul and divine kinship. Humanity is at a crossroads and through this global event, called the Day of Declaration, Maitreya will appear via satellite across linked television networks around the world. You will see Him on TV yet there will be no sound. Instead, He will speak telepathically to the world - each person hearing him inwardly in their own language. His energy www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Hoop dance - a modern spin From my first hoop dance class, I was hooked. I connected with it immediately the tricks, the feeling of the giant plastic circle swirling around my waist and hips. Soon, my whole life revolved around hooping. I attended weekly classes, spent all my free time practicing (sometimes four or five hours a day) and I talked nonstop about hooping to whoever would listen. Fast forward seven years later and not much has changed. Although I don’t spend quite as much time practicing, I am still in love with the plastic circle that has truly changed my life. Hoop dance, or hooping, is a modern dance art form that grew out of the rave culture and jam band scenes in the USA in the 90’s. Hoop dancers combine on-body hooping and off-body tricks to form a seamless flow or dance. The adult hoops used are different than the toy store versions you might be used to. They are bigger and heavier, making hooping accessible for almost anyone. An average beginner hoop is around 38" in diameter and is made of thick tubing. This allows the hooper to move their body less to keep it spinning. For me, the hoop became a tool for embodiment; it grounds me, brings me to my centre and into the present moment. It also became a tool for empowerment. It allowed me to build confidence and to be able to freely express my creativity.

I also became a certified group fitness leader through the AFLCA so I could add even more value in my classes, because, of course, the hoop is also a tool for exercise. I’m not interested in going to the gym, but I can easily spend an hour in my hoop, which has been said to burn 300 - 600 calories per hour. Plus, it strengthens the body and helps build a strong core, while increasing the mind-body connection. The hoop can also be a tool for ecstatic bliss! Combining hooping with ecstatic dance is the perfect formula for raising your vibration and awakening every cell in your body. In this practice, we use the chakras as a guide of where to focus our energy as we allow the body to move intuitively. The hoop acts as portal in motion, stirring up and activating each chakra. Through movement, breath and sound, we release energetic gunk, creating space for our radiant beings to shine! Participants leave feeling ecstatic, with an open heart and much more embodied.

I began teaching because I kept getting requests from people saying they wanted to learn it when they saw how much fun I was having with it. Through hooping, I shared my story of overcoming depression and addiction to inspire teens to find healthy ways to express their emotions. I tried to encourage the adults that I taught to let go of fear about how they looked, to just enjoy the moment and to play.

Akashic gratitude can change you by Holly Hawkins Marwood

the first time in your life, to see all of the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ as a blessing that brought you to the seeking, healing and releasing you have done over the years. Without these events you would not be who you are today.

Money troubles, depression, job loss, divorce, illness, accidents, addiction.

Learning to access your own Akashic Records is your birthright and an important tool to use during these transforming times. If you feel worn out trying to change circumstances in your life that seem unmovable, then perhaps learning to access your Soul’s repository of information will be the key to connecting with the solutions you seek.

Do you feel it is possible to be able to see the ‘good’ in these situations? Can you stretch yourself to even say that you would feel grateful for any one of these in your life? It is hard, yet it is possible. When you can see the perfection in all of your life’s experiences, both the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’, you have the potential to release all negative constriction allowing you to open up to more in your life. It is like living life with a set of blinders on, which are then removed - suddenly you have a new, expansive view of your life! How is this possible, especially when situations might have happened long ago? The possibility is there for your perception of the events to change, shifting your current mindset, moving to a place of gratitude! By accessing your Akashic Records you have the potential to see your life, and the events within it, from a different point of view. The opportunity is there to see traumas, upset and abuses from the point of view of your Soul. The events themselves will not change, but your perception of them can change, allowing you the freedom to move forward in your life unencumbered by feelings of loss, abandonment, betrayal, wounding or victimization.

Not a happy way to begin, is it? Yet these are some of the issues we have to deal with either directly in our own lives or because family and friends are dealing with them. All are upsetting, traumatic, potentially life-threatening and, from our human experience, they are ‘bad’. They are experiences we would choose to avoid.

One way you can easily learn to access the Akashic Records is by using the Pathway Prayer Process®. This non-denominational prayer creates a safe, sure bridge into your Akashic Records where you access the wisdom and knowledge you have gained throughout all time. In the Akasha you experience freedom from judgment and unconditional love - the perfect environment to see yourself and your experiences clearly and move to a new vibrational reality in your everyday life. Learning to read the Akashic Records is one of the most profound gifts you can give yourself, your family, friends, pets and more. As you understand yourself better, you are freed up to have a new perspective, new experience of empowerment and feel as if the world works for you instead of against you. Holly’s greatest passion is to teach others to read their Akashic Records. She is an active Akashic Record Reader with clients world-wide. Together with her husband, Paul, they share Soul Activation sessions and courses. Find out more: www.Soul-Genesis.com Note: This information is for educational purposes only. In fact, the potential is there for you to feel gratitude for the perfection of your Soul’s orchestration of these events in your life! Gratitude comes when you can see how these ‘bad’ events have brought you new levels of strength, clarity, fortitude, compassion and acceptance. Diving into the Akashic Records connects you with Akashic gratitude: unfailing gratitude for how beautifully orchestrated your life has been, how you have grown because of ALL of the events in your life, not just the ‘good’ ones. What in the world is going on! As an astrologer I’m frequently questioned about what planetary cycle(s) are affecting us. Usually it is because there is tension for a long period of time. At any given period there are a combination of energies in either a flowing or stressful dance with each other, as well as both shorter and longer planetary cycles. The bigger cycles we are currently dealing with are not new, however every once in a while they have a peak and people notice that their lives seem to be more disrupted. Over the past several decades we have been experiencing breathtakingly rapid growth in technologies, science, spirituality and the understanding of interconnection. Because of this, our world view and our models for leadership, politics, economics, families, etc., have been broken apart, continually being redefined. We can’t have that happen without periods of disruption. New ideas get seeded which on the surface seems good, however before these ideas manifest into tangible realities they encounter ‘beneath the surface’ conditioning. When we deal with this on a collective level, some of that conditioning may be thousands of years old. Why is it so important to get clearer on what is happening now? We personally and collectively are experiencing adrenal exhaustion. I think we

18

Mosaic Magazine — Summer 2015

have been banging our heads trying to get things to work in new ways using an old approach and exhausting ourselves. New discoveries force perception change. When that happens we need to adapt in order to grow. In the past the way we adapted was to adopt the posture of ‘survival of the fittest’ which, depending on the interpretation of what that means, can be positive or alienating. If the interpretation is: “I am strong. I can dominate you and rule the world until you get stronger and then you can dominate me,” then we eventually burn out. There are only so many times you can pull yourself back up to the ‘so called’ top position before you wear out and die. This approach is too fear based and alienating and doesn’t fit with how we understand the world now. All that instinctive fear around survival has played havoc with our adrenals. We are bombarded with messages of fear (who is in the lead for the top dog position) by the media and leaders that use it as a way to further their agenda. So in a more progressive way what does ‘the fittest’ mean? What if it meant having a feeling of inner strength which in turn ripples out to our minds and bodies? When we truly feel strong we don’t bully and dominate, we support and lead. A feeling of ‘being strong’ allows us to take that all important (symbolic and literal) breath which opens us to the possibility for stability, a broader vision and the ability to move outward with clarity.

Clarity doesn’t mean always having a guarantee of how things will turnout. The only way we can have that guarantee is if we keep ourselves in a safe box, take the same actions and get the same results. It is an illusion that we can do that for long because behind the scenes of what is visible lies another much bigger picture. It is a universe that is always changing, adapting to what is going on and based on it, evolving and opening up new pathways. In other words, creating. Creating can be in your hands or out of it; either way it affects you. When we get the wakeup call that we can’t crawl back into our boxes and have things work in the same way, it can be shocking. We shout out: “What is going on?” www.MosaicMagazine.ca

All of that rapid growth we’ve been experiencing can be exciting, especially when we get the practical use of advances in technologies. Similarly, it can be thought provoking when we engage in conversations about the theory of everything, global economies, stewardship of the Earth or redefining our idea of God. However over a long period of time rapid growth doesn’t allow for much assimilation time. It is hard on the nervous system and our body-minds. Instinctively we try to crawl back into our former reality and realize that it isn’t there. We then are forced to adapt or perish. Now maybe you have started to mentally crawl back into your box because growing, evolving and adapting feels too big of a job and thinking about it (in a global context) just boggles the mind. However it isn’t too big of a job to stop and question where in your personal life you have emotionally or physically reverted back to a model of survival of the fittest - based on dominating or being dominated. (The image that comes to mind is the liver beating up the heart to get its needs met; obviously in both our personal and collective bodies that mentality is the way towards extinction). What might happen if you were to take a step towards the understanding of survival of the fittest as a feeling of inner strength? What might happen if you take that all important symbolic breath and begin to step towards a broader vision for your world. As you make different personal choices would it not lead to being attracted to leaders who think in a progressive, interconnected way? Would you not also notice sooner when something/ someone triggers a more fear based reaction? You won’t know until you try. If your world has been negatively affected due to a change in job, relationship, health challenge or any type of loss, it is scary and life altering. You need time to adapt. However when it is time to step back out, try the path that leads to a feeling of inner strength. Start by questioning what choices (physically, mentally and emotionally) make you feel strong and stable. Then it is simply a breath in... a breath out... and one choice at a time. Unbound within the lines of art I have been a professional portrait artist for 12 years, but my artistic journey started when I was about three years old. As a child, I never liked to ‘color’ and even when I did, I always colored outside the lines.

Behind every portrait that I have ever created is hidden a self-portrait. Within the image of the person that I am painting, it is evident I am there whether I want to be or not. Every portrait that I create is very dear to me, regardless if it is a commission or just my creative work, because with every brush

Last home of Mother Mary by Connie Brisson I had never even heard of Meryemana before our Celebrity Reflection’s Mediterranean cruise last year in August, which included two ports in Turkey - Istanbul and Kusadasi. Kusadasi is a resort town on Turkey’s Aegean coast, 95 km south of Izmir. After finding a local private guide through a tourist agency there, we drove to Selcuk where we had a delicious traditional Turkish lunch at Selcuk Koftescisi restaurant (lamb, chicken and beef kofte, and a variety of salads). Next we headed to Ephesus, an ancient city built in the 10th century BC. It’s famous for the Temple of Artemis (completed around 550 BC), one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. We were astounded by the perfectly preserved temples, houses and theatres.

Clemens Brentano, a German poet and novelist, dedicated part of his life to transcribing Emmerich’s reported visions and recorded them in a book, Life of the Blessed Virgin Mary From the Visions of Anna Catherine Emmerich (1852). After reading Brentano’s book, a French priest, Abbé Gouyet, decided to go to Ephesus to search for the house and in October 1881, he believed he found it. Then 10 years after, two Lazarist missionaries, Father Poulin and Father Jung, rediscovered the building in 1891, using the same source for a guide. When we arrived at the stone building (said to be Mother Mary’s last home), I was surprised so see how small it was. There were signs saying we could not take photos inside and I could understand why once I was in the house. It did feel sacred and holy. It felt like a church. Even though it was a very crowded, (just two tiny rooms are open to the public), I was compelled to stand inside for a very long time, quietly soaking in the energy (which I would describe almost like a tingling) that emanated in the space. It made me a bit weepy and I had this overwhelming feeling of gratefulness to Spirit for the serendipity that had brought me there that day.

Meryemana — The House of the Virgin Mary

But the highlight of the day for me was Meryemana, The House of the Virgin Mary, high atop Mount Koressos. It is a place of pilgrimage visited by thousands every year, special for both Muslims and Christians. People believing in the holy qualities of the Virgin Mary come here to pray, drink water believed to be sacred and make wishes. It’s believed that Mother Mary spent her last days there, according to a German Catholic nun named Anna Katherina Emmerich (1774-1824). Emmerich, a stigmatist, began to receive religious visions where she recounted the last days of the life of Jesus and details of the life of Mary, his mother. In one vision she believed she was shown the final resting place of Mother Mary, high in the mountains at Ephesus. She said that the house of Mother Mary was built by St. John (following their exile from the holy land after Jesus’ crucifixion), that it was rectangular in shape, with a round back wall and had both an apse and a hearth. The room next to the apse was her bedroom and there was a stream of water running in it. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Outside there is a ‘wishing wall’ where people can write their wishes or prayers to Mother Mary on a piece of paper or fabric and leave it, as well as a spot where one can light a ‘Wishing Wall’ candle while also making a wish or prayer. Lastly there is a place on one wall that has water (indigenous to the hill) believed to have miraculous powers of healing and fertility which people can drink from. I love religious icons so I was delighted to find the most beautiful wooden icon there of Mother Mary. I was told that it was painted by a local priest. It reminded me of something one would find in a very old church. When I look at it now, I’m reminded of my experiences that day and what an unexpected blessing Meryemana was. It’s why I love to travel. Summer 2015 — Mosaic Magazine

(Italian) With heart and soul

A bushel and a peck by Connie Brisson When I was growing up, no one in my house EVER said: “I love you.” We didn’t even hug. In fact, it wasn’t until I had moved away after high school and worked in Edmonton for a while, that I realized how much I appreciated and loved my parents. It was then that I decided I would make a conscious and consistent effort to tell them how much I did love them whenever I could. So the next Sunday, as I was leaving to go back to Edmonton, I told my Mom I loved her and I then gave her a big hug. I’m not sure what I was expecting back but it certainly wasn’t the reaction that I got. In fact, I was really shocked by how uncomfortable she became, totally stiffening up. Her reaction bothered me, so I asked her why she would never say she loved us. She got all flustered and said it was because she didn’t grow up that way, ever expressing love verbally or hugging. And, although saying we loved each other became something we did after that, she was never comfortable with it and there were even times I’d tell her I loved her when she would not say it back. That hurt me, almost always, but I tried to pretend that it didn’t matter. Then there were other times when she would say she loved me, but would add in “a bushel and a peck.” When I asked her what that meant, she said it was a famous song by Doris Day in the 1950’s. It was a way to say: “very much” or “a lot.” A bushel and a peck was an old measurement, mostly for grain, or other dry volumes. It equaled between 31 to 36 litres (depending on U.S. or Imperial) or eight dry gallons. A peck equals eight dry quarts (four pecks in a bushel). It seemed that my Mom could say she loved me, if she added that song part, to make it more playful. Sometimes, she even sang the song. I haven’t even thought about her saying that - not for a long time now. She’s been gone for over six years. But when I wrote my last article about Dumbo and how I realized that my mother had never loved me the way that I love my daughter, Gabrielle, it bothered me afterwards. It didn’t bother me as to whether it was the truth, or not, because it was the truth. But what bothered me was that I

didn’t want to make my Mom look bad. In fact, my guilt over my article even woke me up at nights and I wondered if I should not put it in the next Mosaic. Then one night (after the magazine came out with that article in it), and I felt the guilt again, I got a little angry with my Mom. I wondered, why (after over six years being gone) she couldn’t send me a message from the Other Side to let me know that she “sees me now.” Yes, okay, she couldn’t do it when she was alive, but I asked her: “Why can you do it now, from the Other Side?” Often when a new issue of Mosaic comes out, I get my cousin, Annabel to help me pack up all of the magazines that I send (to various towns) each issue. When she came over this time, she brought a present (as it was also my birthday). She said it reminded her of something my Mom (who was her aunt) used to say. I opened the package, curiously, and as soon as I saw what it said, I immediately started to cry. It was a piece of artwork that said: “I love you, a bushel and a peck.” I cried because it was a clear sign… My Mom was sending me a message to say that she loved me, a bushel and a peck. Or moreover, she had loved me the best way that she knew how, to the widest extent of her abilities. I feel my Mom was trying to communicate to me on a number of levels with that artwork. The first was that she gave it to me as a gift, through Annabel. In Feng Shui (and Disney ☺), a gift is very important. If someone gives you a gift, it is a million times more powerful than if you would have bought it yourself. Also, because I spoke about the power of gifts in my last article, I felt like my Mom (and Spirit) wanted to specifically make sure her message to me was a gift - to make it more meaningful. Lastly, it’s a little funny because I’m really not big on songs and yet in my last article I was writing about the power of the lyrics in Dumbo and here I am now writing about the power of the lyrics of “A Bushel and a Peck.” For me, again, that’s my Mom and Spirit telling me that no sign, no matter how small, is unimportant. Even the lyrics of a song can impact your life. I am always in awe of Spirit. I am always in awe of messages that I get from the Other Side. Thank-you Mom. I love you too, a bushel and peck… www.MosaicMagazine.ca
