In this Mosaic… the Fall 1995. Brenda helped Catherine for the first eight issues and then Catherine produced it on her own until the 26th issue. I took it over on the 27th issue in the Spring of 2004, turned it into full gloss and color a few years later, and now we are the only magazine in Alberta (of the mind-body-spirit theme) that has been published for over 20 years! It’s an accomplishment. From the moment it became mine, I knew Mosaic was so important. I always felt it was a calling from Spirit for me to be a writer but I never imagined how that could ever be as I didn’t feel any great desire to write in a traditional way.
boccabellaphoto.com
Mosaic merged my writing skills (so I could tell personal stories of my own transformation that have occurred over time) with my deep conviction that we can each transform our suffering and pain (or whatever life has thrown us) through the many varied mind-body-spirit therapies/skills/ products that are available right here in our communities.
by Connie Brisson It’s our 75th issue! I don’t know if you heard it when you read that, but bells rang like it was Christmas morning and colorful confetti fell everywhere when I wrote that (energetically, of course J). I first found Mosaic in the late 1990’s. I was a new tarot client of Skye MacLachlan and once when I came to see her, Catherine Potter was sitting at the desk in the main office and gave me an issue of Mosaic to read. After that, I used to religiously check our local Safeway stand to see if a new issue had come out. Each issue I would read from front to back, eager to learn anything I could about the mystical connections between the mind-body-spirit. Then in late 2003, Skye told me that Catherine was looking for someone to take over Mosaic Magazine. Skye thought of me because I had taken Journalism at Grant MacEwan years earlier and over the time she had spent with me, she also saw that I was a seeker – that I was dedicated to my inner personal growth. At the time, I was at a crossroads. I had just tried again through invitro-fertilization to have another child (when Gabrielle was almost four-years-old). When it didn’t work, I was devastated. So when Skye serendipitously told me about this opportunity with Mosaic, I thought, well maybe Mosaic could be my baby.
My purpose in publishing this magazine was/is always with the hope and intention that its information would awaken, inspire and help many people. I know its content has helped me change my life dramatically, often by just being open and willing to try different things. This magazine continues to grow thanks to the many people who believe in the power of mind-body-spirit therapies, in personal development and in alternative therapies. If you are reading this, I am thanking you personally right now. You are one of the reasons this magazine continues to help all the people it does - whether you are a reader, a writer/educator or an advertiser. I sincerely thank you for your support which makes this magazine possible. To celebrate this 75th issue, following our next Mystic Meeting on June 8, let’s have some cake (and eat it too!). Our guest speaker at that meeting will be Holly Hawkins Marwood, Akashic Records Teacher (www.Soul-Genesis.com in California). Holly will introduce us to what the Akashic Records are, explaining how to open them and then take us on a guided meditation into our own records! Join us on Wednesday, June 8, from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. at Lucina Centre, 9505 – 163 Street, Edmonton. The cost is $20 cash at the door and please bring a gift wrapped book (with a mind/body/spirit theme) for a book exchange. RSVP by June 7 to mosaicmagazine@shaw.ca if you can come. Hope to see you there! Also, remember to ask a question to the Universe (you want a mystical answer for) before you read the tarot card article on page 19 by Skye MacLachlan. It’s always amazing to see what the answer is. Enjoy!
And in the early months of 2004, it did become my baby and I’ve had many births of it ever since… 48 to be exact! Mosaic Magazine began as a 16 page newsprint publication when Catherine Potter and Brenda Mottram started it in

Rosen Method’s gentle, responsive touch by Cinnamon Cranston Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner
We are born needing touch. Our bodies are hard wired to receive and give touch as a means to navigate our environment and ourselves. Touch is so essential to our physical and psychological development that without it infants fail to thrive or bond with others. During early development, touch lets us know who we are, what we need and how we feel. Gentle, responsive touch, along with affirming, supportive words, is a key component in recovering from emotionally and/or physically stressful experiences because it lets our bodies/minds know that we are safe, not alone and cared for. Experiences of safe connection through touch activate the relaxation response in the body (parasympathetic nervous system), decreasing fear and anxiety and stimulating the body’s ability to selfsoothe and heal. Ivy Green, author of Relaxation, Awareness, Resilience: Rosen Method Bodywork Science and Practice (FastPencil, 2016), describes how Rosen Method Bodywork (RMB) uses this approach to address the underlying causes of stress and chronic pain. When a person does not receive enough support through gentle, responsive touch and affirmative words at a time of intense emotional and/or physical distress, the individual will unconsciously tighten their bodies to guard against their own feelings and memory of their experience. While this muscular guarding serves to protect the individual it also limits their capacity to experience themselves fully, as patterns of repression and ‘holding’ take precedence over freedom of self-expression and general well-being. These protective muscular holding patterns in the body then become a nonconscious process or in other words, they become a part of our way of living and reacting to the world around us without us being aware of it. For example, I have always been a prepared person, always ready for any possibility for things to go sideways

Mosaic Magazine — Summer 2016
or completely awry. My body was ‘on’, ‘ready’ and vigilant but I did not necessarily experience it this way. What I felt was the need to get stuff done. I was always busy and when I wasn’t busy I was collapsed on the couch with a creeping dread of anxiety hanging over me until I became busy again. I lived in extremes but thought it was normal. Well it was my normal. Deep inside myself I longed for more joy in my life, more playfulness, more creativity and deeper connections with others. I felt trapped. RMB gave me the embodied selfawareness I needed to feel the feelings and experiences that had brought about my generalized anxiety and fatigue in the first place, as well as the new possibilities of relaxation, trust, safety and openness available to me in the present moment. RMB transformed my life. Today I can play, love fully, express myself freely, ask for what I need, set healthy boundaries and listen to my heart’s desire. Today I have awareness of when I am present and when I am not. With awareness comes choice and possibility. The quality of RMB touch is unique to most other forms of body-work in that it employs a “non-doing hand” that is both actively listening and responding to the person being touched, while simultaneously conveying to the person the non-verbal message: “I am here with you

and I care about you.” RMB practitioners believe that touch is the deepest way to know someone and that it is a privilege to be honored and respected with our own utmost integrity and self-awareness. Practitioners apply a gentle yet firm touch from the core of their ‘feeling’ selves with their heart in their hands, aware of their own inner feelings and experiences as well as listening to and being aware of their client’s inner experiences. This is a pivotal component to RMB. Practitioners must be able to go inside themselves and www.MosaicMagazine.ca
listen to their own bodies. Clients will only be able to experience themselves to the degree the practitioner can allow themselves to be present and self-aware. This is why the training for RMB includes a lot of personal growth and takes approximately three and half years to complete. Through their touch, practitioners are listening to and receiving what is present in the body in that moment rather than thinking about what they could manipulate it to be. During this process practitioners become curious about the nonconscious holding that is present in the body and begin to explore the areas of muscular holding with their hands slowly and purposefully so the client can register the experience in their bodies and increase their self-awareness. What follows is an attunement where the practitioner and client attune to what is present in the body, as nonconscious holding patterns begin to come into awareness. Once a specific holding pattern has emerged, the practitioner will narrow their focus into a specific area of holding in the body, meeting the holding with as much support as needed for the client’s body to register the degree to which they are holding, while also feeling the support available to them by the touch of the practitioner. The muscles are now in a position to do something other than holding. Relaxation is the natural response to this kind of support; however, a protective emotional barrier may prevent the muscles from letting go. This is the place where the client comes into contact with their barriers to whatever feelings or behaviors that have been suppressed. The practitioner holds a non-verbal curiosity around what these experiences are and whether or not the client still needs to protect themselves from these experiences in this way. The practitioner wonders what the client’s life would be like without these constraints and begins to guide released muscle through a greater range of motion and possibility.
communicated what I was feeling in her body. While I was supporting the muscular holding around her diaphragm and ribcage, I noticed that her whole ribcage was held outward and puffed up conveying a non-verbal message of: “I can do it all by myself! I am strong!” I was curious about what was underneath all of that. I said to her that it felt like she couldn’t land inside herself or really have herself from the inside out; that she was stuck in the work of having to be strong. After I spoke this to her she felt the holding in such a way that she was able to let go and take in an affirming breath. Her diaphragm released and her muscles relaxed under my hands. Then her face flushed and tears came as she experienced what was held back all these years, her gentleness and her vulnerability. After this feeling was allowed and her body softened into deeper relaxation, she gave voice to a new experience… that her vulnerability was her strength and the holding and trying to be strong was what held her back from being her full self. As a practitioner of RMB I have witnessed the work change peoples’ lives. People come to RMB sessions without consciously knowing what is holding them back from being what they long to be. Over time they blossom, becoming more relaxed, aware, resilient and able to live more fulfilled lives. Such change is truly a privilege to witness. Words are also an important part of the process as the practitioner uses them as a third hand with the intention of reflecting, supporting and deepening the client’s embodied experience. Clients are invited to share their experiences if words are there for them. However, sometimes words can take the client out of their embodied experience and into a state of conceptual self-awareness, which is more of a ‘head’ place. It is more important that clients stay attuned to their body’s feelings and sensations so words are of secondary importance to the touch. Practitioners use words to maintain the clients sense of safety, bring awareness to their feelings or experiences, distil the essence of their words, clarify the difference between conceptual self-awareness and embodied selfawareness and to clarify when their words match their body’s experience and when they do not. We also use words to meet the client in their experience, mirroring and supporting them. In this way, words can help to transform an old pattern into a new possibility of experience for the client. For example, one of my clients was able to experience a release from a very old holding pattern when I www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Being your authentic self by Skye MacLachlan Feng Shui Consultant
This chi indicates what our gifts and challenges will be. But most interesting, it acknowledges that we are one of a kind and we will leave our own unique mark upon this planet and the people who inhabit it. The power of our chi will reverberate through space and time. I live in a neighborhood with many children. It’s fascinating to observe each child’s unique essential energy. As parents, teachers and the bigger community, we can encourage the development of a child’s authentic chi (also known as luminous chi) by observing and being curious, and valuing all gifts equally. Conversely, criticism and excessive control (as opposed to loving guidance) will quickly separate a child from their authentic chi. When we become disconnected from our luminous chi, this results in a life that feels burdensome, monotonous and for some, filled with anger. The lucky few who stay connected will experience joy and harmony even in the midst of life’s challenges. There is an ancient Taoist Feng Shui practice that gently nudges us back into alignment with our authentic chi. It requires a commitment of about 15 minutes each evening but the long term results are transformational and well worth the effort. This exercise is best done in the evening just before going to bed. It has the added benefit of encouraging a restful sleep. Imagine an aspect of nature in front of you - the specific aspect is dependent on when you were born. For people born in the spring (February, March, April) imagine a beautiful healthy tree before you. If you were born in the summer (May, June) imagine a burning campfire; in the late summer (July, August) imagine a field of newly plowed soil or a large stone that is big enough to lie down on; in the fall (September, October) imagine a tall, majestic mountain and in the winter (November, December, January) imagine a large body of water such as a river, lake or ocean.

One of the inherent truths of Feng Shui is that each of us is born with a certain quality of chi/qi (our life force or energy).
shoulder width apart (if you’re unable to stand, do while sitting), take a few easy breaths and relax. Throughout this exercise take quiet breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. As you exhale, empty yourself of all the old energy/ beliefs that you’re carrying (the goal is to become hollow inside). Begin by emptying your chest area: exhale and release the old energy to the element of nature that you’re imagining before you. In the same way, empty all other parts of your body in the following order: abdomen, lower torso, legs, arms and head. Each area may require several releasing breaths before you feel empty. Once you have emptied yourself, call upon the highest vibration of light and love to fill you with your authentic chi. Feel this energy pouring like sweet honey into you through the crown of your head and filling your entire body. Lastly, visualize the most beautiful diamond gemstone surrounding your body, as if you’ve stepped into the diamond. Because a diamond is extremely strong and sparkling, it will deflect the return of all old beliefs/energy and will maintain the purity of your authentic chi. Even as you drift to sleep, hold the vision that you are a sparkling diamond.
As you repeat this exercise nightly, your life will change. At first it will be in small ways such as greater harmony and joy, and over time miracles will be a common occurrence. Living your authentic chi is your birthright. May it flow into you with the sweetness of honey and may you always sparkle bright and clear as the diamond that you are. Hay Fever allergies Hay fever (allergic rhinitis) is most often caused by pollen in the air. This occurs at different times of the year in different parts of the country. The most common symptoms are runny nose, burning eyes, tears, congestion, and fatigue. The fatigue is due to the immune system using up energy to push allergens out of the body. The tears and runny nose are the body’s way of flushing allergens out of the eyes and nose cavity. For some people, the symptoms can imprison them indoors with all the windows closed. I suffered with hay fever for many years. I was working as a nurse in intensive care where wearing a face mask was often necessary. My hay fever was quite an issue because by the time I removed my mask and gloves to blow my nose and then put on a new mask and sterile gloves, my nose would be dripping again. I relied on antihistamine drugs but the drowsiness side effects added to the fatigue that came with the hay fever, which made it difficult to stay alert, and the nature of my work didn’t allow for any errors. Then I discovered homeopathy for hay fever. It was fantastic! The symptoms decreased right away and there was no drowsiness. I had lots of energy and no runny nose or burning eyes. That was the start of my homeopathic journey. Homeopathic remedies for hay fever are effective and rapid yet gentle and they contain no chemicals. The symptoms disappear due to the principle of homeopathy, which is that two similar diseases cannot be active in the body at the same time. One of the common homeopathic remedies for hay fever is Allium Cepa (Latin for onion), which is made from the juice of the onion where the chemical part is removed to leave only the energetic component. Reacting to an onion and having hay fever produce similar symptoms like runny nose and burning eyes. Because you cannot have an onion reaction and hay fever symptoms at the same time, taking Allium Cepa makes the hay fever symptoms vanish.
heads down to watch the ball. This is a tricky position when dealing with a runny nose. Your subconscious is always at work to keep your body going. At this very moment as you read these words, your subconscious is taking care of your breathing, maintaining your heart rate, digesting your last meal and regulating all the bio-chemicals in your body. Everything that is repeated frequently enough becomes a habit that is delegated to the subconscious. Consider driving, for example. After years of practice, your subconscious looks after many low-level tasks related to piloting your car down the street while your conscious mind may be thinking about something else.

by Louise Grenier BSc. Nursing, Homeopath/ Heilkunst, NLP Practitioner
The situation is much the same with hay fever. You are outside and pollen gets into your eyes and nose, so your body produces fluid to flush it out. This happens again and again. Eventually, your body triggers the runny nose and burning eyes automatically when it assumes that pollen is present. This is like Pavlov’s dogs salivating in response to the bell even when there is no food.
To get rid of hay fever for good, we need to convince the subconscious to change its belief from “pollen is a threat” to “pollen is safe.” I do that using Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) together with more specific homeopathic remedies (than the one mentioned above) to target grass, trees, etc. This usually takes one or two sessions. There is no reason to suffer from hay fever this year! Louise Grenier, BSC Nursing, uses a number of modalities to help clients (Homeopathy, Nutrition, EFT, NLP and more) and is available in two clinics, one situated in St. Albert (780-459-3609) and one in Sherwood Park (780-416-4211). Move towards plastic free dentistry by Dr. Amr Abou Zeid Dentist
Over the past few years I have faced a professional dilemma as a practicing dentist in Edmonton. Many patients approach me with the desire to remove the silver mercury fillings in their mouth for holistic and health reasons. Although safe removal protocols are in place, the patients are given two options for replacement: plastics or ceramics. Plastics (composites), in an injectable form, have been the restorative material of choice by dentists for decades as they are tooth colored, covered by most dental insurance companies and most of all have greatly improved in strength, durability and esthetics over the years. However, most of these composites in today’s market are manufactured from Bisphenol-A (BPA) derivatives. BPA has estrogen mimicking properties and has been a toxin related to brain ailments, heart disease as well as cancer. BPA can be picked up in air, water, dust, and humans are exposed to significant quantities from canned food items.
(alkaline earth metal) which exists in a salt form in our bones. Metals in nature are in a stable salt form; it is only when we extract them from nature do they become unstable and some become harmful. Given their strength, esthetics, durability and above all biocompatibility, ceramics are perhaps today’s best option as a restorative material. The main issue that patients face is that of cost as these ceramic inlays or onlays produced by CAD/CAM machines are expensive and usually not covered by dental insurance. A year ago however, a new and exciting breakthrough in dental materials by a German company (VOCO), has offered a remarkable new option. VOCO has released an all ceramic filling (Admira Fusion) in an injectable form similar to plastic. The manufacturer claims superior strengths and esthetics. As well, the cost of such fillings is comparable to those of plastics and are covered by insurance companies like any other plastic filling.
Prima © Oksana Zhelisko — www.zheliskoart.com
Another potential exposure source are dental plastic fillings made of BPA derivatives (mainly Bis-GMA). Although manufacturers claim almost no release of BPA or presence of unreacted BPA in their compounds, the scientific community has lagged behind. Some studies have reported BPA release up to 10 hours after placement of the composite fillings; others cannot verify BPA release due to study limitations. While mercury fillings (amalgam) toxicity has been studied for decades, very little work has been done on the toxicity of BPA derivative based dental fillings. Some manufacturers took interest in this issue and released products in the market that were labeled ‘BPA free’. Interestingly however, they replaced BPA derivatives with urethane derivatives. Urethane is yet another toxin that has similar serious health concerns. After educating one of my patients on the issue of BPA, the patient said to me: “So what now Dr. Amr? I guess the devil I know (mercury) is better than the one I don’t?” I then explained about the ceramic option, but after finding out the cost of that, the patient replied: “No thank you!” Ceramics are stable harmonious salt forms that are found in nature and can be manufactured. Lithium disilicate and zirconium dioxide are common ceramics now replacing metals in dentistry. Some argue that lithium and zirconium are elemental metals, but so is calcium www.MosaicMagazine.ca
Admira Fusion is today’s first and only all ceramic (BPA and urethane free) filling in an injectable form. This product was developed after the realization by VOCO of the demand for more biocompatible restorations by dentists and patients. This new option has also allowed me as a dentist to build a practice that is more biocompatible and eliminates not only mercury but also BPA and urethane from use. Dr. Amr Abou Zeid holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (University of Toronto). Dr. Abou Zeid practices a clean and holistic approach to dentistry through mercury free and plastic free products, offering needle free freezing options, private rooms and low noise electric drills for patient comfort at Nebula Dental Clinic, 730 - 91 Street SW, Edmonton. What is Soul Retrieval? We know when part of our soul is missing. There is this indelible itch inside of our being, pushing us to seek what is ‘lost’ so we can feel whole again. When that yearning is ignored, or passed off as irrelevant, we are pulled out of alignment mentally, emotionally and physically. Soul Retrieval is an ancient shamanic process of acknowledging and reclaiming the lost parts of our soul, through ceremony and shamanic journey. When we go through trauma, loss or a life altering experience, reality as we know it changes and a piece of our soul fractures off – a piece that cannot contend with the new set of circumstances (as this new experience of reality holds elements which are either not okay or unfathomable for this part of our being). In order to cope, this aspect of our soul is denied, cut off and separated from us. Eventually we get used to our new reality and there is no more room for this part of ourselves. Sometimes it is not what did happen, but what didn’t happen such as neglect or abandonment in childhood. In this case, the part of yourself that needed to be loved in order to feel whole left in order to meet the fact that love was not being experienced in your home. When an aspect of our soul leaves, an agreement is formed. The experience of Soul Retrieval helps us recognize what this agreement is and then changes it so the lost piece feels safe in coming home. In the case of abandonment this agreement could be: “I don’t need anyone else,” or “It is not safe to be me,” both of which (when held as a core belief) impacts one’s relationships as an adult, limiting the ability to live whole heartedly.
Through a guided shamanic journey it is possible to find the part of yourself that is missing (relating to the specific issue or pattern we are looking at). Usually it is an aspect of your child self, whom requires trust that a solid foundation can be laid in the present reality so it can feel safe in returning. Our soul-parts want to return, sensing the gravitational pull back to our centers and when we are ready to listen, it is time for Soul Retrieval. In my practice Soul Retrieval is broken into four parts: 1) What is the re-occurring pattern of soul loss; 2) What elements need to be expressed around the loss; 3) The actual Soul Retrieval; 4) Fire ceremony to welcome missing parts home. Here is how one of my clients, Laurie Nordberg, explained her experiences with Soul Retrieval. “I have suffered trauma in my past and as a result was left with feelings of incompleteness, feeling ‘fragmented’, off-balance, and at times extreme loneliness. I constantly had this feeling that something in my life was missing. Although, I felt ‘over’ my past difficult experiences, no amount of companionship or material items could fill these empty feelings or ‘set me right’. I came to Sarah for help. Through journeys with soul retrieval I was able to find parts of myself that had long fallen away. The experience was completely unexpected, amazing and the long term results, even more so. Now, I never feel lonely. I feel much more confidant and nurtured. All of these feelings come from within. I no longer look outwards for security or comfort; it just is not needed. My expectation regarding close personal relationships looks very different now. I feel much more whole from finding myself through Soul Retrieval.” Baby Doll in Yellow © Maria Pace-Wynters — mariapacewynters.com

Symptoms of soul loss include feeling like something is ‘missing’ in your life, a listless disconnection from purpose, unsure of who you are, stuck in reoccurring patterns, struggle with being able to accept love, overcome with fear and powerlessness, unable to dream and addictive tendencies. We are so hungry for what is missing that we fill that space with anything we can - often unhealthy distractions such as alcohol or overloaded schedules.

Understanding allows healing Understanding the real cause of your stress, toxin overload or emotional trauma (be it physical or emotional), begins and resolves your healing of it. I have done Colon Hydrotherapy and Lymph Drainage Therapy consistently for myself, as well as clients, since 1997. They are the most powerful therapies to cleanse and detox at a cellular level, as well as on an emotional level. In fact, they stirred my first awareness that I had emotional childhood trauma - that I had a first father I had totally forgotten. Our body has seven channels of elimination (skin, colon, lymph, lungs, kidneys, liver and blood) and your skin is your largest elimination channel in your body. Clients always say how great my skin looks and I can easily attribute that to Colon Hydrotherapy and Lymph Therapy. I’ve found that my skin really ‘glows’ after either of those therapies. However, I recently had a scare over some skin issues. Last year, I had two very sensitive, dime size patches of dry skin on my lower leg. Then three months later, I noticed a mole that was new on the same leg. It got bigger within a month. All three of my sisters have had skin cancer before, so I went to see my naturopath. My naturopath told me to see a dermatologist (as it looked like different types of skin cancer) and the earliest appointment I could get was four months later. I wasn’t that concerned at first, but then I let my sister’s fear infect me.
to separate. My mother and her boyfriend (my second father) kidnapped my siblings and I when I was only three and a half years old. I lost my only safe attachment person, my first father. Inner skin problems (my mole) are caused by an ‘attack conflict’. My second father was physically, verbally and emotionally abusive. That conversation about GNM was such a turning point for me. My skin cancer was confirmation that I had resolved these emotional traumas, as physical symptoms show up when the conflict is resolved. THAT felt so validating and exciting as I have worked diligently on my previously forgotten childhood trauma since those first Colon Hydrotherapy sessions brought it into my awareness.

My fear was totally gone and 10 days after that conversation, the skin cancer mole wasn’t there when I showered. The ‘healing phase’ had also resolved itself. Biofeedback Therapy has also played a huge part in identifying and releasing my physical and emotional stress and traumas. It identifies and releases emotional charges anywhere in the body (plus where you are holding your stress and toxins, in what body system) and then uses frequencies to release the stress so rebalancing occurs on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level.
I know fear can feed illness/disease just like sugar can. Reducing that fear is key to nipping it in the bud. Understanding and resolving past traumas/conflicts is easier with Biofeedback. All the therapies I do are my passion as they have changed my life and that of clients for the better in every way. My saving grace was when I talked with a friend (another Certified Biofeedback Specialist) who shared specifics about skin issues I hadn’t come across yet in my studying of German New Medicine (GNM). GNM states that a specific illness/disease appears as a ‘healing phase’ from a specific emotional ‘conflict’ in the past. GNM states that outer skin problems (like my dry patches) are caused by ‘separation conflicts’ which are due to being separated from someone that you love or a desire www.MosaicMagazine.ca

When everything is about to change There are moments in all of our lives when we have the unmistakable realization that everything is about to change. This occurred in my life several years ago. I remember, with aching clarity, the time I REALLY failed. This was not a normal failure, but a pretty spectacular crash, which led to all sorts of collateral damage in my life and those I deeply cared about. Like most of us, I had failed in the past but this particular failure was so significant, and it so profoundly affected the lives of family, friends and others that I cared about, that I made an attempt at suicide. That attempt at ending my own life changed my life forever. It changed my life because had I succeeded, I would have damaged the lives of those I care about, like my children, even more than the initial failure. Failure can do something profound to our sense of worth and value. For me, this event led to a decision to end my life, but yet when I began to uncouple my worth and value from my performance, complete transformation began to occur. In seeing my worth and value, the good news is that I was able to overcome my failure. I began to notice that all my failures, mistakes and frustrations were actually laying the foundation for the insight and understanding that has created the new level of living and professional success that I now enjoy.
Self-love. Self-compassion. When we practice a new way of approaching failure, it can change failure from something we fear into something we embrace. The biggest challenge is giving yourself permission to relate to your failures differently.
2. LEARN FROM FAILURE To overcome failure, we need to learn from it. If we do not learn from our failure, all that pain and misery is wasted and we risk making the same mistakes again. Build on setbacks. Use them as stepping stones. Close the door on the past. Don’t dwell on failure or let it have any more of your energy, your time or space. Learn and simply move on. LIVE - BE FEARLESS! Everything you want is on the other side of fear. Every dream, aspiration or idea for a new start-up, new business or project and every awakening of new possibilities. The only thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve is the fear of failure. So let’s live. Let’s be resilient, mentally and emotionally tough, unafraid. Let’s be fearless.
One final thought… Every adversity, every heartache and every failure carries with it the seeds of future success. Don’t be afraid so much of the failure, but fear getting stuck. I believe in second chances and I hope you do as well. When everything changes, don’t give up. Transition and change can be your friend. Abe Brown is the Coach’s Coach, Founder and President of Momentum Coaching, www.momentumcoaching.ca, and President of the Certified Coaches Federation, www.certifiedcoachesfederation.com, (over 10,000 Life & Executive Coaches in the last 8 years). Abe is also the international best-selling author of “Getting Where You Need To Go.”
Attaining success is about having the courage to try new things and at times, not hit the mark. But each time we miss it, we learn, recalibrate our aim and then we can cultivate personal and professional success. The only thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve is the fear of failure. Here are three ways to overcome failure: 1. LOVE YOURSELF We can rewire our response to mistakes and failures so that they’re not just things we avoid. The key? www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Make life better with yoga and meditation Two thousand feet above the Sequatchie Valley in Tennessee, enveloped in timeless tranquility, the Isha Institute invites you to step into the stillness of meditation.
all four paths of yoga under the guidance of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.
Scientific studies clearly demonstrate that yoga and meditation promote health and well-being. To be healthy, achieve harmony and to perform at the peak of one’s potential is the goal of every human being. Yoga is an effective tool to make this possible. And it all begins with you.
Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev is a realized yogi and visionary who has dedicated himself to the elevation of the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of all people. He is an influential voice on socio-economic development and the connection between leadership and inclusiveness. He has spoken at the UN, the World Economic Forum, at MIT, Emory and at other renowned forums.
The Isha Institute in McMinnville, Tennessee (a nonprofit established in 2006) was created to provide a space for inner exploration leading to the possibility of selftransformation. It is dedicated to promoting the practice of yoga in its classical form and is unique in that it offers
Over 30 years ago, Sadhguru distilled Isha Yoga from the essence of ancient yogic sciences, as a tool to access the subtler dimensions of life. His logical approach to the mechanisms of life does not ascribe to any religion or belief system. “As there is a physical science and technology to create external wellbeing, there is a whole dimension of inner science to create inner wellbeing,” he says. The Isha Institute offers a variety of programs from beginner to advanced levels to provide the methods needed to attain physical, mental and spiritual well-being as suited to individual need. These tools make it possible to sharpen one’s awareness and to create the possibility of living life by choice rather than by compulsion. Two structures are of special significance at the Isha Institute: the Adi Yogi Abode and the Mahima. Adi Yogi (literally, First Yogi), was the originator of yoga. Over 15,000 years ago, he, the first yogi, offered the science of yoga to humanity. It is by his methods and technologies that a human can aspire to the possibility of self-transformation even today.

In November 2015, Sadhguru created the Adi Yogi Abode as a powerful meditative space encapsulating the essence of yoga. The Abode helps to promote both physical and mental well-being. Within the Adi Yogi Abode is an energized copper ellipsoid. By simply sitting with open palms, or doing a few simple yogic practices that are offered here, it is possible to benefit from it. No prayer or worship is required.

From the air, the Mahima is a clearly visible landmark sitting as if in contemplation in an expanse of moving forest. Mahima is the largest free-spanning meditation hall in the western hemisphere. Its gleaming copper dome encloses 39,000 sq. ft. of vibrant space conducive to experiencing deep states of meditation. Many of the center’s programs are conducted here - classical Hatha yoga programs, Inner Engineering classes and advanced meditation and practice. Inner Engineering is a program that provides tools and solutions to empower yourself to create your life the way you want it. It gives you the opportunity to intellectually explore the basics of life using methods from the distilled essence of yogic sciences. The course imparts practical wisdom to manage your body, mind, emotions and the fundamental life energy within. In the Inner Engineering Completion and Total programs, you learn a 21-minute kriya called Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya. Shambhavi Mahamudra Kriya is a powerful and purifying energy technique using the breath. After taking the Inner Engineering program, research indicated that 98% of people saw increased mental clarity, 92% found improved emotional balance and 94% experienced a deep sense of inner peace. There are three different ways you can take Inner Engineering: online, at workshops held in a variety of cities across the US and Canada, and in-person at the Isha Institute in Tennessee. The Isha Institute is also the perfect destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway. On its 1400 acres, you can hike many miles of mountain paths and linger at waterfalls along the way or explore mountain-biking trails and meditate on the sound of the wind at the bluffs. Learn a few simple yogic practices here – many are offered free – or sign up for more advanced classes. You can enjoy internationally inspired vegetarian meals from the Isha kitchen and at night, listen to the katydids from a comfortable bed in a private cottage or in semiprivate accommodation. The Isha Institute hosts Free Yoga Day events monthly to bring well-being in the communities. This is a great time to discover the campus with family and friends and share with them the experience of free yoga sessions, meditation, vegetarian cooking classes, guided tours and meals with live music. Children’s Yoga camps are also conducted periodically. The Isha Institute is open year-round, including weekends and holidays, except for closures during special programs. Nashville and Chattanooga are both within comfortable driving distance from the center. For more information please visit IshaUSA.org or call 931-668-1900. New beginnings with the Sun The radiant light of the sun touches and illuminates every aspect of our being. No matter how challenging our lives, the sun is a constant companion. It always rises to guide us through a new day. Similarly, when the Sun card appears in a tarot reading, we can look forward to a rekindling of hope, new beginnings, renewed energy and the reminder that all things are possible. Both practical and spiritual guidance are hidden within the symbols of each tarot card. On the Sun card we notice the happy and naked child with arms wide open. This child reminds us that to attain the joy and aliveness of the sun, we must become childlike, innocent, playful, heart centered and authentic. In the background of the card there are four huge sunflowers and the child wears a crown of sunflowers. Sunflowers move their golden heads and follow the sun as it journeys across the sky. The Sun card teaches us to follow the light that lives within us, our personal sun, for this is the true path to lasting joy and enlightenment. Here’s an exercise that can help you learn how to honor the guidance of your inner sun, by becoming aware of what brightens you and what annoys or stresses you. When you have a decision to make, close your eyes and connect with your inner sun. Notice which choice causes your inner sun to really shine brightly and which choice seems to dim your sun. Try to honor the choices that brighten you. When you feel that you must make a choice that dims your sun, know that these are the places in your life where you carry fear and are controlled by the values of the outer world. Gradually, as you live in alignment with what brightens your inner sun, you’ll become like the child on the sun card… joyful, free and filled with love.
your accomplishments, personal growth, abundance, feeling open hearted and committed to an important relationship, good health, the ability to be yourself and let yourself shine, you can achieve anything, saying yes to a new opportunity, marriage, generosity, true love and a joyful time with friends. If your question is about work, the road ahead is smooth and you are recognized for your positive contribution. If you’ve applied for a new job, the outcome looks favorable. Work may involve travel and doing what really allows you to shine.

If your question is about romance, if you are single get out and enjoy yourself and it won’t be long before you’re falling in love. For those who’ve been in a committed relationship for some time, now is a good time to pop that important question and set the date to celebrate your marriage. For those who are married, you’ll find yourself falling in love all over again with your partner. If your question is about money, more money seems to be accumulating in your bank account, luck is on your side, your mortgage is approved, you sell your home, you’re able to relax around money and enjoy some special treats.
If your question is about health, your health is improving, information comes to light that allows you to transform your health, you have more energy, you heal quickly from a surgery or illness or you’re motivated to achieve your health goals. The sun is a portal to a new beginning. Have a wonderful time enjoying all the blessings that the radiant sun has to offer. Skye has specialized in Tarot for over 30 years. Working with Mars retrograde by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist We have a Mars retrograde from April 17 through June 29. Mars only retrogrades every two years. For those of you not familiar with astrology, retrogrades are periods when the planets, from the perspective of the Earth, appear to stop their forward motion and move backward. Astrologically, it is considered an optimal time to rethink, re-examine and re-evaluate how we respond to various types of planetary energy.
Some retrograde periods we notice more than others because they are directly activating our astrological chart. However, even when our chart isn’t being affected we are all impacted by planetary transits because of their collective effect. Astrologically speaking, Mars is the planet that relates to our instinctive desires and assertively going after what we want. Some of us are more comfortable with a win/ win approach in how we go about meeting our needs while others have a “kick the door down and run you over approach.” When Mars, the King of “I want what I want,” retrogrades it gives us an opportunity to re-examine how we go about fulfilling our personal and collective desires. Often, when we have arguments or are aggressively debating a viewpoint, if you scratch the surface there is some underlying need that we want met. These needs might include the right to safety, physical well-being, acceptance, acknowledgement, respect and love.
Shepherds or Feminine Innocents © Karen Goodfellow — www.karengoodfellow.ca
When feeling conflicted, frustrated or full out angry, the way you can work more consciously with this cycle is to gain clarity as to what the inner need is. When the conflict involves another person be open to expressing your needs as well as hearing about theirs. Before having those important conversations, if you have been feeling frustrated you may need to first release some of your tension with a physical activity (punching someone doesn’t count as physical activity, but laughing about the idea of it may release tension). Having an impartial person to talk to can also be helpful. The dark side of Mars is aggression and being too locked in a primitive, survival mindset. We want this part of our brain activated when survival is truly the issue not when we are driving and want to get somewhere faster. Avoid locking horns with someone else as it won’t produce anything other than a headache or heartache.

Think about an area of your life that you have been trying to get moving (over the past few months) and are currently getting either internal or external messages to re-examine it. Chances are that is the area being activated by the Mars retrograde. Look at the conflict arising and pay attention to the underlying need being triggered. Is there a strong need to win (the argument, race, promotion)? If so, give yourself a time out to reflect on the underlying motivation. It doesn’t mean the action you are taking is wrong but your approach may be. Consider if there is another way to deal with the situation that is less tension producing. There is a mantra, prayer, affirmation (whatever you would like to call it), that I like to start my morning meditation with. After taking a few centering breaths, starting with myself and then offering it to all sentient beings, I quietly or silently say the mantra below. It is quite potent to replace the words “I may” with “It is okay.” For example: “It is okay for me to have safety; it is okay for you to have safety.” Try both versions as they activate something different within us. May I have safety; may you have safety, May I have physical happiness; may you have physical happiness, May I have emotional happiness; may you have emotional happiness, May I have love; may you have love. When I can feel what I am saying all the way down to my bones, I feel open, calm and spacious. The ability to feel the words means the intention is going deeper and connecting the mind to the emotion. The body-mind then believes it. I love the effect of using this meditation when there are more than usual amounts of chaos in the world, in my life, or around the people close to me. It opens a pathway for the fearful more primitive me to feel the clearer, wiser, kinder me. An Astrologer since 1986, Catherine is also a Hypnotherapist and Meditation Instructor. She brings her experiential counselling and teaching style to The Northern Star College of Mystical Studies. Call 780-447-3667, www.northernstarcollege.com and www.catherinepotter.ca

Warrior in the making by Maria Pace-Wynters I started painting daily when I turned 40. I guess I realized it was now or never. I’d always wanted to be an artist but now was the time to actually become one. I took a lot of art history in university, and over the years, all the art I studied at that time had sifted through me. What rose to the top is what has influenced my paintings ever since. I love to paint the figure - in particular, the female, and above all, the face. My paintings are often about one’s dreams. I consider myself the protector and cultivator of my children’s dreams and aspirations. It is important that they know that they can be whatever they dream or aspire to be. Dreams are so delicate, like the flowers and butterflies in my paintings. In some ways, I think that I am protecting my own dreams as well. My paintings are often about my children, about being a mother and also remembering being a young girl myself. Your children can do that for you, remind you of your own childhood. It is so special to be able to watch your children grow, and in a way, relive that part of your life.
Feathers In My Hat © Maria Pace-Wynters
Tender Warrior © Maria Pace-Wynters
I am slowly moving away from being the protector of my children’s dreams. In my ‘Warrior’ series of paintings, I focus on the strength of the dreamer. It gets harder to hold onto childhood dreams as you get older; it takes a warrior’s strength to believe in your dreams and to listen to your inner self. You have to be determined and move forward, toward the light of your dreams, not without fear, but with unwavering confidence of your beliefs. We must all be warriors in the making and we must teach our children to be as well. “From the moment we are born, people tell us that the world is like this and like that, this way, that way. It is natural that - for a certain period of time - we end up believing what we are told. But we must soon push these ideas aside and discover our own way of living reality.” — Paulo Coelho, Warrior of the Light (HarperCollins 2003) For more on Maria’s art go to www.mariapacewynters.com

Con Amore
(Italian) With heart and soul
Hello from the Other Side A few weeks ago I was driving to an appointment with a new practitioner I’m seeing in St. Albert (that I totally love and experience deep changes with), when a truck with a logo with a bear’s paw drove by me on the highway. I smiled immediately because a bear’s paw reminds me of my brother, Gene. When I was small, he left home at 16-years-old to go out into the world and work. And when he would periodically come home, he always had little gifts for us. He was like Santa Claus. This one time he came home with beer glasses for my Mom with bear paws on them from Kodiak Oilfield (who he was working for). Ever since then, I’ve always associated the symbol of a bear’s paw with him. Whenever something like this happens - when I see a bear’s paw, a rainbow, his truck or a backhoe (part of his excavating business) - on the way to a healing appointment or during my day, I know it is a symbol from him/Spirit telling me that something significant is about to happen to me that day. Other times I just feel like he is saying: “Hello.” The first time I remember that happening was when Gabrielle was baptized (almost two years after Gene was gone). Although Marcel and I didn’t go to church regularly, having Gabrielle baptized was very important to me. I tried to find different churches to baptize her but none would because we weren’t members. Thankfully, my Mom (bless her) convinced the priest of her parish to do it. So finally when Gabrielle was almost two-years-old, she was baptized at my Mom’s church in Bonnyville. While I was never worried that Gabrielle’s soul would not get into heaven without being baptized, I felt deep down that her baptism was an offering of her soul to Spirit, to God, so He would protect her and guide her to live her best life possible. After the baptism, as we were driving out of Bonnyville to go to my Mom and Dad’s for a celebration dinner, we ‘coincidentally’ drove by a truck that was the exact same as my brother Gene’s (before he died). And for the briefest of moments, I thought I saw Gene behind the wheel of that truck. It took me by such surprise and I began to instantly cry because, of course, I wished so badly that Gene could have been there to see her baptism. But, then it hit me (out of nowhere, so I felt it was a message from Spirit),

that HE DID SEE IT and that truck (and seeing someone who looked like him driving) was his way of letting me know that he had seen it from where he is now on the ‘Other Side’. And since then, over these last 16 years, he’s sent me a lot of messages. Just this year, on Chinese New Years, an auspicious day where we want to be conscious of signs of what is coming in the year ahead, something wonderful happened. I went to a Chinese restaurant I often go to, enjoyed my lunch and all was normal until the moment I was about to leave the restaurant. I looked across the room and I gasped… I thought I saw my brother, Gene. There was this man there who looked just like him. I felt this was Gene’s way of saying “hello” to me, of letting me SEE him again (something I wish so often for). detail of The Thinker © Maria Pace-Wynters

A few weeks later, I had the most amazing appointment with Jill Williams where I had two ridiculously, over-the-top, amazing body shifts the likes of which I’ve rarely had in the last 15 years during body-work. During one of the processes she told my body what date it was (so it would know that it was past the date of the original trauma) and as she said the date, it hit me that it was the 16-year anniversary of Gene’s death. And then I (so happily) realized that these big shifts were no coincidence – it felt like Gene/Spirit were instrumental in this deep healing. When I came home, I lit three candles (one each for Marcel, Gabbey and I) to honor his life and his light, and then I placed them in front of a special photo I have of him. Then I went for a walk and as I walked back up to my house, I saw the most incredible thing in the sky. There was almost a full circle rainbow in the sky and above that circle was another arc of a rainbow. Then above that was another arc of a rainbow and to the left side, another side of a rainbow. In all my life, I’ve never seen anything like it. I ran into the house to get Gabbey so she could see it too. And, as we stood there marveling at the magnificence of it all, I told her I thought Gene had sent those rainbows to let me know that he knew I was remembering him. Our loved one’s spirits continue on and death is not the end. I think they come back into our lives through symbols and ‘coincidences’ to let us know they still see us and watch over us. And when they do, it’s such a surprise and a gift…
