I Love Mosaic or tablet, AR adds layers of digital information videos, photos, sounds - directly on top of items in the world around us. So, if you use your smartphone or tablet on the back cover of this magazine (after downloading the free Layar ‘app’), you are going to be in for a Harry Potter kind of treat. Remember how, in the Harry Potter movies, that the newspapers had moving images (like a video) instead of a still photo that showed events in the daily news?
www.L3photo.com
Well, this is similar. When you use your smartphone or tablet to scan the back cover of this magazine, you will witness the woman come to life and start talking to you as though you are watching a video. If you move the smartphone or tablet away from the ad, she stops talking and when you move it back on, she starts again. It’s amazing technology.
by Connie Brisson You know, (here comes an old story), when I took Journalism at Grant MacEwan College many, many years ago, we used specially trained doves to transport important news messages from one location to another. Or was it pigeons…? Okay, okay. Maybe I’m not that old and our system wasn’t that archaic. But it feels like it now. Even when I took Mosaic over in 2004, it was like publishing in The Matrix instead of All The President’s Men. We had email - I could sit in my pajamas at home and with the trusty help of my wonderful graphic designer, Carol Pylypow, we could make this magazine happen without leaving our houses (mostly). In my college days I could NOT have imagined that reality. And now, 10 years later, I can’t believe that Mosaic is the first magazine (that I know of) in Edmonton to have an interactive ad! Check out the back cover of this issue to see this new technology on the Roots on Whyte Dental ad, submitted by agency on record, Zora Transmedia. Technology is changing our worlds, every day in every way. And I like that because things that we could never have conceived of years ago, are now reality, because someone dared to dream a bigger dream. And all of our worlds just got bigger because of that. The new technology from Layar is called ‘augmented reality’ that allows books and print to come alive. Augmented reality (AR) is cutting-edge technology that allows for a digitally enhanced view of the real world, connecting you with more meaningful content in your everyday life. With the camera and sensors in a smartphone

Mosaic Magazine — Winter 2013
I love this whole idea as it adds another dimension to how we get information. It’s kind of like our intuition - our innate and mysterious ‘app’ that gives us information and downloads all types of data from the ethers (often just by looking at something) that helps us know where to go, what to do, how to do it and everything else in between. This kind of futuristic ad would be a coup for any magazine, but isn’t it wonderful that it aptly found its home in Mosaic Magazine - a magazine that celebrates the avant-garde and is ahead of its time in all of its content, information and wisdom. As the Law of Attraction tells us, like attracts like. So we are happy to attract the technology of the future. And the icing on the cake for me was the astonished look on my 13-year-old daughter’s face when I showed her this new, cool ‘app’ and how it worked with the ad. Yes, this slightly old and not-always-so-hip mother was very delighted to show her teenage daughter how to use this new technology, instead of it always being the other way around. Oh ya, I can be hip when it’s necessary. Okay, it’s time now to remind you to think of a question that you’d like a divine, oracle type answer to. What is it that you want to know? On page 30 we have this issue’s Oracle Answer for you, where one oracle card is featured and has a message specific for you, thanks to Ascendant Books. The cost of conflict While recently travelling in Asia, I witnessed the lingering effects of a conflict that ended 38 years ago. It is estimated that over two million Vietnamese, Cambodians a n d Laotians were killed and countless wounded in the Vietnam War. The financial cost to the U.S. government was billions of dollars. Today undetonated land minds and cluster bombs still kill or maim, and render precious agricultural lands unusable. The statistics on the cost of war are readily available - but what about other kinds of conflict? An average litigated divorce costs $50,000 in legal fees. Family members disputing a deceased’s Last Will can deplete the entire estate. Those are the quantifiable costs of conflict, but what about the effects that we cannot measure? When one parent files a statement of claim for divorce in court against the other parent, it is analogous to declaring an act of war and the children will be the casualties. Family members fighting over an estate cause irreparable damage to their relationships. Ongoing conflict reaches far beyond the financial by negatively impacting our physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual health. Each of us possesses our own beliefs, values, needs, thoughts, opinions, judgements and assumptions which act as a filter to create our own personal version of reality. In law school I observed a criminal trial in which more than 20 witnesses were called to give evidence. Each witness had a different account of the event. How could 20 different people watching the same event have 20 different stories of what happened? Because each of those witnesses had their own unique filter, through which the data and facts were being processed. No wonder we have conflict; our individual perceptions are rarely in alignment with another’s.
processes diverted to the primitive part of our brain, no rational problem solving can occur. We may have the intention of resolving conflict in a peaceful manner, however as soon as any of the parties to the conflict are triggered, productive resolution becomes improbable. Most of us lack the necessary communication skills to ask the kinds of questions to deepen understanding. Much of the time we are protecting and defending ourselves. How often are we truly curious about what is going on with the other person? We have to be centered in ourselves and detached from the emotional charge of the conflict. If we are caught up in our own emotional reactions and defending ourselves we are not open to any perceptions other than our own.

by Deanna Koebernick Collaborative Family Lawyer & Mediator
Mediators work with those in conflict by using skills and self-awareness to stay outside of the conflict while knowing when and how to ask the questions that will shift perceptions and transform the conflict. When this happens, the tension in the room lessens or dissipates all together. Clients signing their mediated agreements often experience an emotional release. These are not easily quantifiable results, but nonetheless just as real as the financial impacts.
Conflict affects our families, workplaces, communities and nations. Each of us will relate to the conflict differently, usually in a way that we learned in our family of origin. As long as the conflict remains unresolved, the negative emotions will affect our health, just like the undetonated bombs in the fields of Asia. What is unresolved conflict costing you? Do you want to try a different way? Deanna is a Collaborative Family Lawyer and Mediator at Epona Law and Mediation. She empowers clients to resolve their conflict respectfully and creatively. Add to this, that anytime we get triggered by something said or done to us, our body pumps out adrenaline and cortisol. This causes our brain function to retreat from the frontal cortex to the amygdala where we react in one of three ways - fight, flight or freeze. With our thinking

Women of Power Change is in the air, in the seasons and on our planet. As a race, humanity is in the process of achieving balance. The battles are raging and we watch with interest, and sometimes horror, but we know the way the story ends - a new world, a whole and balanced world and a world remade in the image of the ‘heaven’ we have longed for these many centuries. Over the past several months I have noticed a subtle but important change in clients that seek healing, balancing and personal growth / development with me. Until this current year, the majority of my clients have sought healing for physical dis-ease. But the trend in my practice has changed and clients now are also noticing and seeking balance for dis-ease of a different type - feelings of disconnectedness, life imbalance, emotional strain, joylessness, discontent with how they perceive themselves and the lives they’ve recently been living. There are also men, both young and the more mature, who recognize this disconnect, but the majority I have worked with recently have been women, unconsciously seeking to step into their power. At this particular time they recognize that they must seek change and then pursue it. I refer to them as ‘Women of Power’. We each create our own lives. I always maintain that clients who come to a healing facilitator are consciously or unconsciously brought to that specific ‘healer’ on purpose. We are all connected and it is not just the methodology that creates the healing resonance for the client. It is the unique combination of timing in the client’s own life development, resonating with the personality, the character, the heart, the intention and the focus of the healing facilitator or healer, in addition to the methods /modalities applied in the session(s).
within and then allow them to use that magnificent power to bring about their transformation or healing in exactly the perfect way for themselves. I re-cognize and absolutely support these Women of Power - those clients and those women who choose to respond to the need within themselves to seek balance, change, transformation, sometimes at initial personal cost. They are willing to invest the time and grasp the opportunity to realize once again WHO they are - their potential, their strengths, their power. These are ones who are stepping into their world (and ours) in a more balanced, whole, new and exciting way to make it new; a world where, by conscious choice, they love, respect, honor and nurture the life within themselves and by extension life all around them. These are women who are expressing the ‘Divine Feminine’ and by subtle, but dynamic example, are freeing and leading those with whom they come in contact to become more of who THEY really are. Balance III © Doris Charest
by Kimberlay Kiernan RN, CCH, CRHP, CLC
These are Women of Power, and as such, are the beginning of the future that is taking shape NOW. As a healing facilitator, it is my honor to come to know and respect each one with whom I am privileged to work.

In my view, the sole focus of a true healer in this NOW time is opening the clients to the healing transformational power already within them, but inaccessible, unused or dormant. As a ‘healer’, I join with my clients and release that power for them to access. In my practice, I choose to enable them to recognize the strength and resources www.MosaicMagazine.ca

How I discovered my ‘gift’ by Marlene Checknita Empathic Energy Healer Many years ago, I accepted an invitation from a friend to join her at a Talking Circle group, where people from all nations sat on the floor and shared their thoughts/hearts at the moment they were holding a large rock. Everyone had the option to either speak or simply pass the rock (if they chose not to share). As I opened my hands to receive the rock, I gasped inwardly due to the intense heat that it held. As I shifted the rock from hand to hand, trying to not make it noticeable to the others that I was literally burning my hands/fingers, I decided to pass the rock. No one else displayed any obvious discomfort while holding it, so I thought: “I am not ready to hold this rock because my hands are not used to it!” After the last person spoke, the leader of the group asked me kindly to join her aside from the others. I thought: “Oh, oh. She is going to ask me to not come again because I couldn’t hold the hot rock!” To my surprise, she asked me what I was experiencing with the rock while it was in my hands. I explained that the heat was unbearable and I didn’t know how everyone else could hold it.
later (of running from myself) that I finally sat still long enough to face myself head on. I had a ‘gift’ and I needed to read and learn more about this. Then one day I was asked by a friend to smudge a home that he was trying to rent, but was unable to. This friend knew that I used smudging techniques to clear unwanted energies. I had no idea that (when I agreed to do this favor for him) I would discover another part of my gift. As I walked upstairs and down the hallway, I instantly stopped as I ‘felt’ a barrier that was SO powerful that I knew I couldn’t walk through it. So I simply sat down and prayed, asking for an answer to this barrier. What came was a sense of pain and grief that engulfed my being. I thanked God instantly for allowing me to know what the answers were and once the gratitude was shared, the sensations left. When I contacted the owner to share the story, I was told that was the exact spot where the previous renter had experienced a very personal, traumatic experience. Days after the house was read,

She smiled at me and asked to hold my hands. Then she looked me right in the eyes and said: “Marlene, if you were aboriginal you would be considered a Medicine Woman, a natural healer, as the rock only burns in the hands of one who has the ‘gift’!” This information was so foreign to me that I never went back to the group as I wasn’t ready to hear the truth of my purpose on this earth. And it wasn’t until many years

cleared and cleansed, it was rented. And that was the beginning of a journey of reading and clearing/cleansing homes and businesses. Another example, of how energy can manifest itself, is in an inanimate object. In one home I was simply walking around a dining room set and ‘something’ told me to put my hand on the top part of one of the chairs. As I did that, my head on the top left side felt very heavy and painful. This lasted for a few seconds until I thanked God and white light angels for revealing the information. When the owner came home, I took them to the chair and shared my experience. The woman said that this was the chair that her daughter (who had a brain tumor) would sit in when she would visit her home. Other times, I will pick up an object and feel its emotional heaviness and cleanse the energies away from it. At one home it was an ordinary coffee mug that held the picture of two adorable young children. The owner of the home said they were estranged from these children for the past 20 years. Another time, a pillow that laid nonchalantly on a couch amongst many others, ‘suggested’ for me to pick it up and upon doing so, I had to put it back down instantly as it was ‘too heavy’ to hold. It turned out the woman used that particular pillow to cry her tears into after the loss of her husband. Other times, I may sit on a bed if that is what I am ‘called’ to do (when I say ‘called’ it is not the owners telling me, as I ask for no information to be shared prior to the reading). One was a cabin in another province and the only information the owner wanted to tell me was that no one wanted to stay there to visit with them and that was bothersome. So as I walked through this cabin and was upstairs in one of the bedrooms I got a ‘strange’ sense that I was being watched as I left that room. So I instantly swung around and saw two menacing eyes glowing. This energy obviously wanted to be noticed so I went back in, smudged and prayed. Then it was gone. It turned out that this was the room where the previous owner had a guest who was now in jail, having done some very disturbing deeds in that room. A person can still be alive and their energies can stay behind. Sometimes when I am doing a reading, clearing/cleansing I will be drawn to a particular photo. Recently, this happened with a picture of a man in a client’s home. As I approached the picture, I ‘sensed/heard’ that he was the protector of someone in that home. At that point I didn’t know whether this man was alive or deceased or to whom he was related to, yet either way, he definitely wanted me to know and to share the important message he relayed. When I shared this with the home owner, she responded with tears of joy and gratitude for the message from the ‘other side’.
As a result of the house cleansings, owners whose homes have been for sale will contact me to say that their home has finally sold. One time, a house was on the market for over eight months and, an hour after I left, someone wanted to unexpectedly view the home and an offer to purchase the home happened the next day! Another time, a lady had just fired her realtor after only three showings in 13 months, hired me the same day to do the reading/clearing and then two days later her house sold! Another time, a lady (who had a rental building on the market for three months) got a knock on her door from someone who just happened to be driving by and wanted to look at renting this spot for a bakery! Other times, I get affirmative calls to say that people are sleeping better, children are not having nightmares anymore, money is coming into their home (due to a raise) or their business started getting calls from people they were hoping to get business from. Sometimes, emotions that are suppressed will be given ‘space’ to be dealt with in this newly cleansed environment. The benefit of these emotions being released is that it lessens the burden on the immune system, thus the possible prevention of health issues. Occasionally house clearings don’t work in the way we think they should. Why is my house still not selling even when it has been cleared? Because there is a bigger picture in place that one is not aware of at the moment. For example, I cleared this beautiful, expansive house in rural Alberta yet no offers worth considering came into fruition for this particular client. Months after the clearing, she noticed the phone number of a local bobcat operator because she needed her yard cleared of all the snow that fell last year. Once he appeared in her yard and she saw him… she knew. Many months later they are a beautiful couple enjoying a relationship that may not have happened had my client’s house sold previously. A lot of times having their house read, cleared and cleansed simply gives the owners the comfort they need to know that this space they call ‘home’ is safe and sound. Marlene Checknita offers House/Business Readings, Clearings and Cleansings and can be reached at 780-946-7088 or angelictouchservices@shaw.ca Gift Certificates are available for a very unique gift.
I have so many stories like this and I’m grateful to be able to offer my services to people who need energies cleared whether it be because a house doesn’t rent or sell, a divorce or separation or if a person/family just wants to have their house feel better for whatever personal reasons they may have. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Give yourself permission to be rich by Karen Evelyn Business Mentor to Workshop Leaders
As a heart-based ‘Uplifter’, it’s the same for you. The more clients you have, the more lives that transform. The more lives that transform, the more money you make.
Imagine how you would feel if you woke up this morning and found an extra $100,000 in your bank account? It’s all for you!
You’re here to make a difference in the world. You’re here to directly uplift others who can benefit from your guidance and care. The sooner you allow yourself to be rich through your transformational work, the better. The sooner you get rich, the sooner you can quit your day-job and devote more time to sharing your true gifts in the world. The more you contribute, the richer you become.
I hope this money would feel good to you. I hope it would make you feel secure, loved and held by the universe. I hope you would receive it fully and enjoy it without guilt or shame. I consider my ability to receive large sums of money willingly and joyously a reflection of my capacity to allow good in my life. The more money I allow into my life, the freer I am to enjoy good for my family and I. The more money I receive, the freer I am to flow good back out into the world through abundant generosity.
Most of the workshop leaders I meet are not motivated by money at all. No! They know they’re here to make a difference in their client’s lives. They have a calling. Even so, I always encourage them to set their sights on earning 6-figures. Why? Because when they do, a few important things happen:
detail of Heart String © Carol Breen
How would you feel? Relieved? Happy? Joyful? Loved? Guilt? Shame? Overwhelmed?
1) They uncover their deeply buried barriers to riches. Their negative attitudes about receiving come to the surface to be healed and dissolved. 2) They open their minds to new leveraged ways of working with clients. They begin to find ways to provide more transformation to more people in less time. If you’re willing to overcome your own cap to wealth and become rich (and transform many lives along the way), I invite you to write this commitment to yourself:
I love to be generous. And I love to be rich. Even as a little girl I knew I was meant to be rich when I grew up.
“I permission to be rich.”
That’s why it was so disappointing when I first set out as a Life Coach. I struggled to get clients and make any money at all! I’d found my calling and yet I had to work two retail jobs just to make ends meet.
Write it out on beautiful paper and put it somewhere you see it often. Next, open to guidance: “What must I change about myself in order to allow myself to be rich in all ways?” Do this for 30 days and see what happens!
You can imagine my relief when I found a mentor who saw exactly what was causing my challenge and helped me to redesign my business to reach 6-figures. Making 100,000/year was my goal and the main change she encouraged me to make was to offer workshops and group programs, instead of solely 1-1 coaching.
Karen Evelyn is a Business Mentor who shows Workshop Leaders how to create a real, thriving Workshop Business they love! Reach out to her at karen@liveyourgenius.com or 1-888-807-2452, ext 2.
(Your Name) give myself
This allowed me to reach more people at once and make more money too. I quit my jobs and reached 6-figure sales within three years. I now see that my capacity to receive abundance flowing into my life connects directly to the amount of transformation that happens in the lives of my clients. Because of this, I do my very best to remove any personal caps to the amount of abundance I’m open to receive.

Skye’s View
Cure for personal transformation Transcendental Feng Shui cures are particularly potent because they bring an aspect of your inner knowing, longing and desire together with an action in the outer world. The following transcendental cure lends positive uplifting energy from an area of your life that is thriving and uses this bright lively chi to transform an area of your life which feels challenged. In traditional compass school Feng Shui, each area of our life is represented by a specific direction in our homes or workplaces. Place a large square over the floor plan of one floor of your home (even though you may have several floors, focus on one for this cure). Now divide the square into nine equal smaller squares. Determine the direction that the front of your home faces (standing inside your home and looking out, in the direction of the front of your home); this will be the direction of the front middle square. For example, if the front of your home faces east, then the middle square along the front line of your home will be the east gua. Fill in the other squares based on the natural directions of the compass. Here’s a brief overview of what each gua represents. The EAST gua represents the elder members of your family (including parents), older friends, your boss or teacher, illnesses that are genetically based, the past and your feet. The NORTHEAST gua represents knowledge, your love of learning, your ability to apply what you’ve learned to your life, scholastic work and your hands. The NORTH gua represents your career, the general daily flow of your life and your ears. The NORTHWEST gua represents helpful people, how easily you attract helpers into your life, your vehicle, travel and your head. The WEST gua represents your children, younger siblings and friends, creativity, your ability to manifest your dreams, the future and your mouth. The SOUTHWEST gua represents your marriage / intimate relationship, your desire for a loving partner and your internal organs. The SOUTH gua represents fame, your reputation, your energy and aliveness, your ability to feel guided by Spirit and your eyes. The SOUTHEAST gua represents money, your ability to manifest abundance and your hips. The CENTER gua represents your health, your ability to stay centered through the changes that life www.MosaicMagazine.ca
brings and all areas of your life that are not mentioned in the outer guas. Purchase nine blank books or scribblers that are attractive to you and place a blank book in each gua. Begin with the gua where your front entrance is located and write five aspects of this gua (using the above gua descriptions, but making it specific to your life) that you are grateful for. Go clockwise around your home, picking up the blank book in each gua and repeating the exercise of writing five areas of gratitude (specific to the focus of each gua); end with the center gua. Notice which gua you find easiest to express your gratitude and notice which gua you find most challenging to express your gratitude.
The New Energies © Judy McLean
by Skye MacLachlan Feng Shui Consultant
For the next 27 days, continue to express five statements of gratitude, beginning with the easiest gua identified above. Then imagine the light and love from this gua being carried with you to the most challenged gua and write five statements of gratitude in this gua. Focus on only two guas at a time. When you have completed the 27 days, you may choose to continue for another 27 days or you might move on to another two guas - always pairing an easy gua with a more challenged gua.
As you do this transcendental cure, you’ll notice that you begin to attract greater ease and even miracles into your life. Try not to miss a day, but if you do, begin again at day one and let the powerful energy of this transcendental cure transform your life. Skye has specialized in Feng Shui for the home and business for over 30 years. Women helping each other by Wendy Woodworth BraveHeart Local Leader Life is a struggle for many women. I found myself lost and sinking as well over the years, struggling to keep my 25 year marriage together for what I thought was for the sake of the children and when I finally found the strength to say enough is enough, I don’t deserve to be mistreated, my children said to me: “What took you so long?” I was only fooling myself when I thought no one else could see my pain. So in 2001 I found the courage to do what was right for Wendy and found myself divorced with four children, three of which still needed to complete their education (ages 14, 18, 20) and a business and staff that needed me to keep things moving forward for them as well, so as not to disrupt their lives.
It was then I realized that, for my three-dimensional world to change, I had to change inside. I knew there must be another way. Life will send you clues along your path and it is only when you are open to receive will you notice them. I received an email that Dr. Ellie Drake with BraveHeart Women (BHW) was coming to Calgary on July 17th and her message resonated with me so much that I just had to go. For those of you who don’t know, BraveHeart Women is a global community that encourages connection, expression and prosperity through local Chapter meetings, on-line community and workshops. That one day changed my life forever. I found what I was looking for - another way - designed specifically for women. A fundamental part of the BraveHeart Women method is it is energetic, it is vibrational. It is integrated: Mind, Body, Spirit.

We, as women, are raised under the male model for success. I didn’t know there was another way for us, so I pulled up my ‘big boy pants’ and over the next six years worked long hours and alone to keep everything going but I forgot about me completely.
Then in 2007 I met my soul mate, Carmon, and on February 14, 2009 we were married. My life was turning around or so I thought. Just 2½ months later, the love of my life and I were sitting in the doctor’s office and were told Carmon had 3rd stage colon cancer. He chose the method of healing that resonated with him but in April 2011 the cancer had jumped to his liver - now classed as 4th stage. I was screaming from the inside - WHAT AM I DOING WRONG!

My journey of transformation had begun - to find the wholeness of who I am. I became a sponge for everything BraveHeart Women offered and in November 2011 I attended RISE, the global gathering of likeminded women from around the world. It wasn’t a convention - it was a magical experience of, again, evolving to another level. It was then I knew I had to let other women know that there was another way. I wanted to shout from the rooftops to all who would listen and as synchronicity was now alive in my life, sure enough, it was then that Ellie reached out to those in attendance and asked if we wanted to assist her to bring BraveHeart Women to our own communities. BHW were 450,000 strong on the internet and Dr. Ellie Drake wanted to drop chapters on the ground to reach even more. The Universe had spoken to me. On May 25, 2012 I launched the first chapter for BraveHeart Women world-wide in my home town of Calgary, Alberta. And what is soooo amazing about my journey with BraveHeart Women is it has given me the tools to continue along the journey with my husband as he continues to fight cancer, as two weeks before my Chapter launch we were advised that the cancer had jumped to his lymph nodes. Without BraveHeart Women I would have been a basket case by now. Instead I am continuing to blossom and be at ease with all that is going on in my life, and the love of my life and I are enjoying every moment we have together with so much JOY that I know would not have been possible with the old me. And in July this year I experienced BHW exotic healing in Bali with my husband and thanks to that experience, I released all need for rigid structure in my life and have become more intuitive. I live now in the moment with my husband and do not let my mind wander into tomorrow - taking me away from experiencing the moments with him and with my Chapter. I no longer require the need for copious notes to read to people but instead want to be authentic and visceral in the moment.
(within minutes) of what her survival pattern is, see the pain and struggle in her heart and remember that I too was once where she was and if she is open, assist her to realize that this is not WHO SHE IS as a woman, but merely the only way she knows how to survive. Women who have joined the BraveHeart Women Chapter in Calgary have shared with me their personal struggles and how they too are beginning to evolve, coming each month to listen, learn and, equally importantly, be with other BH women in mind/body/spirit. The female visionary’s path is an evolving one and I am so grateful for finding BraveHeart Women when I did. To be able to go through life with joy in my heart and be on this blossoming path as a female visionary is truly remarkable when I think back to where I was in 2009 - lonely, hurting, no voice - to now speaking before 1,000 women. This is just the beginning for all of us who are open to receive. The hardest step is taking the first one without knowing what lies ahead but “action precedes awareness.” Thank you for all your support and allowing me to come from my heart to share with you all. RISE 2013 is happening on November 13 to 17 in Los Angeles and I urge you - no matter where you live - to email me at Wendy@BHWomenChapter.com for a ticket that will be the start of transformation and new beginnings for you. You can also join us for a FREE informative night of fun, food and learning at the Bow Waters Canoe Club. Simply go to www.BHWomenchapter.com to register. Natural Healing “I’m in a relationship right now that I know is no good for me.Over the last year it has stripped away a lot of my self-worth and even though I know that (or maybe because of that), I don’t seem to have the inner strength or confidence to end it. There is a part of me that thinks that ‘something’ is better than ‘nothing’. Help!” DR, Calgary

My intuition tells me that your third eye chakra, as well as your sacral chakra, are out of balance. I feel that your ability to honor and respect your own needs has been lost in the mix.
What comes to me is that you already know what you need to do! But having said that, ask yourself: “What can I learn from this experience?” There is no relationship with anyone (whether it is for five minutes or 50 years) that’s not there to teach us something.
Allowing your confidence and happiness to be dependent on someone else’s opinions rarely ends well. Your essential stone is rose quartz. Carry it with you as often as possible. This beautiful pink stone teaches unconditional love and forgiveness, both for the world around you and for yourself. The multi-faceted attributes of rose quartz will serve you well for the foreseeable future.
Journaling daily about how you are truly feeling will help to bring that connection to ‘self’ back for you. Allow yourself to feel at peace with your current situation. It serves no purpose to be hard on yourself about what you have / have not done, and much more positive to focus on where you want to go. Your third eye chakra is a gateway to your own creative talents and intuition. By connecting with your thoughts and feelings through journaling you can rekindle that connection to your third eye and begin to move forward from a place of self-awareness and emotional independence.
It’s already clear to you that your selfworth is being affected and as a result your head (ego) is telling you “something is better than nothing,” but if you were to go into your heart, you’ll see this from a different perspective. This is an opportunity to evolve and someone had to be the facilitator. That’s truly what we came here to do, is it not? Acknowledge this experience from a different perspective - you then will take back your power and move forward in whatever direction that may be.
Your sacral chakra is about your emotions, your playfulness and inner diva. Spend time connecting to your needs on a more physical level. Is there an activity you enjoy such as dancing or painting that you could partake in? Let your inner diva loose and know that it is okay to embrace your healing. It is sacred, just as you are.
It’s not the relationship that you need to take a look at (and nobody has that authority to tell you what you should or should not do as far as that goes). I can tell you from my own experience, that when you work on yourself inwardly, the other ‘stuff’ transcends into a greater understanding of Self, and you will attract new and healthier relationships into your life.

Citrine will encourage a positive attitude and help you look forward to a bright future. An apache tear will allow you to mourn the loss of the relationship and move on, while a piece of black tourmaline will offer you strength and courage to tackle difficult decisions. I get the feeling you need to rediscover yourself, regardless of your relationship status. Carnelian is your stone for creativity and vitality, while blue lace agate will help you find your voice. Moonstone is the stone of divine feminine energy - use it to find your internal power. While moonstone is helping you to embrace your feminine energy, add labradorite for confidence and the desire to try new things. There is an amazing, confident, creative woman inside you and it is time to let her back out! Weight gain and blurred eyesight by Summer Bozohora Natural Vision Specialist We all have some idea of why we gain weight. At Christmas time for example, it’s fairly predictable. Most people gain five to ten pounds. But do you have an idea of why you might experience a degree of visual blur at any given time? When we gain weight we have an idea that we’ve eaten too much sugar and fat (not enough healthy fruits and vegetables) and/or we’ve been inconsistent with exercise. Besides the kind of food we eat and lack of exercise, are other factors that affect our eating and exercise habits. Particularly at Christmas are the interactions with family that trigger emotional stressors, the financial stress of habitual holiday spending and that our day-to-day liferhythm is interrupted. Finally, as a Vision Specialist, I must mention one other important, but often overlooked reason why we gain weight around Christmas time in our northern climate - light deficiency.
Although I’ve used the specific example of Christmas-time weight gain, the triggers for gaining weight are the same at other times of the year… types of food, lack of exercise, stress and light deficiency. So what causes visual blur? Many of the same things that cause weight gain! Diet is a factor, light deficiency absolutely is, but by far the biggest factor is stress and strain that develops into long standing nervous system and emotional patterns that affect the way we use our eyes. In his book Restoring your Eyesight, A Taoist Approach (Healing Arts Press, 2007), Doug Marsh says: “Mental discomfort such as depression, anger, grief or anxiety always produces blur in normal eyes and increases the degree of blur for someone with a refractive error.” Despite the fact that visual acuity does fluctuate and is affected by many factors, the objective of our vision in our culture seems very clear cut. We either see clearly or we
In his book, Sunlight Could Save Your Life, Dr. Zane R. Kime M.D. (World Heath Publications, 1980) describes how body chemistry responds to light through the eyes:

don’t. It is the objective of the eyes to operate and function well at all times - to see clearly up close, in the distance, under all lighting conditions and under any emotional or nervous system stressors. We don’t seem to expect the same from our body (to stay the same in function or shape no matter what we eat, how we sleep, or what kind of stressors or environments we put it in). It’s really a ridiculous expectation for our vision then, right? The bottom line is that to wean oneself from glasses completely is just as possible as it is to lose weight and have a ripped set of six-pack stomach muscles. Everyone can do it, yet how many do? How many of us, on the other hand, keep our weight within a healthy five to ten pound fluctuation range? Obviously many more people do. It would be nice if we could all have the ‘model’ body and many do opt for plastic surgery but it doesn’t stop us from over-eating or gaining weight. It doesn’t change the habitual ways we abuse our bodies or use food as a way to calm our emotional state. Applying this same logic to vision, it would be great if we had 20/20, or even better vision all the time. However when we don’t, our culture deems it quite necessary that we either get laser surgery or wear glasses. But just like liposuction for weight gain, Lasik surgery and/or glasses doesn’t change the habitual ways we abuse our eyes or the way we respond to emotional stress. One of my clients explained her experience with vision blur and the return to clarity like this:
Clients hold themselves to a high standard of 20/20! But, did you know that you are legal to drive with less visual acuity? The legal driving acuity in Canada is 20/50 (which is less clear than 20/20). In this way, the natural vision process is much like a diet program; we encourage our clients to make their realistic acuity goal a healthy range of 20/50 or better. In our natural vision courses, you become aware of your visual ‘diet’ - the good and bad habits that affect visual acuity. And like any good diet program, you explore the emotional reasons behind your visual blur and you participate in eye-cises - physical movement that increases your eyes range of movement, accommodative flexibility and visual acuity. Natural Vision Therapy addresses the causes of blurred vision and helps you develop all aspects of your sight including visual acuity (clarity), peripheral vision, near and far sight, night vision, 3D vision and prevents structural and disease complications. Furthermore, you begin to see, and therefore feel, more of the beauty of life around you. Summer Bozohora, M.A. is a Natural Vision Specialist helping people heal and improve their vision. “In May of 2013, I noticed that my vision was blurred and it appeared to me that I needed glasses. Prior to seeing my optometrist, I consulted the Natural Vision Improvement Centre. I spoke with Summer and she took time to ask me about my vision specifically, but also inquired about what was ‘going on’ in my life. It hadn’t occurred to me that the amount of stress I was under may be causing the change in my vision. I explained that my friend/ex-husband was recently diagnosed with a massive pituitary tumor (located in the brain) and had just had surgery to remove it. Faced with the reality that our three children could have been left without a father was emotionally overwhelming. Summer not only drew my awareness to the correlation between these events and my vision, she brought me into essential awareness that led to healing. As I tuned into my own feelings I realized I had been hiding from them by looking after the needs of others. When I attended to my experience of stress and sorrow and took time to relax my eyes as Summer suggested, my vision went back to normal within a month.” Jill Sodero, Calgary Another similarity between weight gain and visual blur is the disdain we hold for ourselves when we gain a pound or two. When people first come to the Natural Vision Centre, they cannot tolerate any degree of blur. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Unlike replacement therapies, which just replace one form of nicotine with another, therefore leaving the client addicted to nicotine, auricular therapy eases the withdrawal from cigarettes. Auricular Therapy (also known as Ear Reflexology) is safe and effective. There are no side effects. Self-administered it consists of stimulating specific points in the ear that are known to help suppress the sensation of cravings, for 15 minutes per session, four times per day. That said, there is some good news ahead. Your goal is to break one habit without substituting an unhealthy or fattening crutch. First set the stage. Consider a support group or therapy to keep you on track. A trusted friend or partner may also help keep the vision. Incorporate yoga, deep breathing, exercise, clean water intake and a positive attitude. Wait 10 minutes if a craving hits and distract yourself with a healthy diversion. Food and beverages can affect cravings. Definitely avoid these three, which can make cigarettes taste ‘good’ - coffee, by Anny Slegten What happened before when you did quit smoking? How did you quit? What made you quit before and most of all whose decision is it now for you to quit smoking? Not knowing this does not make it easy to understand your concerns. From what my clients taught me, smoking is attached to an emotional issue and can be attached to what is called ‘an anchor’. It keeps you reexperiencing a feeling attached to whatever you are smoking. The result is a battle within - you at this point wanting to quit smoking and an emotional issue wanting you to keep smoking. Therefore, by just quitting without resolving the emotional issue, the emotional issue will find Note: This information is for educational purposes only. alcohol and meat. These four make cigarettes taste ‘terrible’ - non-carbonated beverages (water, fruit juice), fruit (bananas, apples), dairy (cheese, milk) and vegetables (celery sticks, carrots). Also, studies have shown that regular intake of oats and eating an orange (raw or in juice form) can reduce nicotine cravings. Oranges can also act as a cleanser. The scent of tomato also helps to reduce the appeal of cigarettes. Lastly, carry a bottle of water everywhere you go, especially when you know you’ll be tempted to smoke and remain committed. Healing with connected awareness Thinking requires effort. Awareness is our natural state. Awareness is our experience, just as it is. Thinking is a thought about the experience, which leads to 10,000 other thoughts. Awareness plays a vital role in healing and living. Because we’ve all become human doers, we’ve lost touch with how healing works. There are three levels of healing. The first level is the result of thinking. Consider a pain in the base of your neck. Prior to a sensation of pain or tension, you probably weren’t thinking much about your neck. Pain in the neck is often due to excessive demand on the muscle tissue associated with the painful area. There are many ways you can treat or remedy the tension or pain in the muscle. You can seek a treatment and when the pain or tension goes away, you feel better. However, fixing yourself by simply removing the pain or tension has a significant limit. It’s just a band-aid. If the problem returns you still do not have the awareness of how to adapt without your remedy. You are not more effective than you were before. The remedies for emotional stress are much the same as for physical injury, because both events manifest in the body as muscle tension and pain. If a remedy takes an emotional pain away, you may feel better, but will you be better? Modern wellness says the answer to the both the physical and emotional muscle tension overload is awareness.
working against yourself. Your painful neck subsides. Your breath flows with ease in the base of your neck and shoulder, and both shoulders feel ‘right’. Even if a remedy is needed, it works as expected and the problem doesn’t come back. The following week you surprise yourself… You respond differently to someone who challenges you at work. You hear yourself speak with more certainty and focus. The change in you is natural; it’s connected awareness. The more often you pay attention to your body’s roadmap of ease and tension, the more you live in a connected way.
Restful Shadows © Janice Blaine
by Dr. Robin Browne Doctor of Chiropractic
The third level of wellness develops as the second level becomes your lifestyle. When it becomes your habit to be aware of the balance of ease and tension in your body, you’ll notice when your body needs attention, physically or emotionally, before it becomes injury or illness. Then, you will become abundant and resourceful enough to focus on what you value most in life.
Body awareness is a natural outcome of Network Care treatments. When you experience connected awareness on a regular basis it becomes your habit, your way, your nature. Reorganizational Healing helps you accelerate the connected awareness process. Think, when it is useful. Otherwise, live a life of effortless passion through connected awareness. The second level involves the role you play in your own healing. Again, for example, there is a pain in the base of your neck. You pause, feel the neck area and take a full breath, feeling your whole body. You notice tension in the area of discomfort. You notice the rest of you feels at ease. You focus on the ease and then connect with the area of tension at the base of your neck. The area of tension automatically begins to change. The more you go between your awareness of ease and the tension, you’ll begin to observe a way of going along with your painful experience, instead of resisting it. You’ll stop www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Transform our shadows with energy work by Jackie Pearce Wholistic Practitioner There has been an extraordinary amount of energetic shifts in the last few weeks and months. What’s it all about? Why have we all been feeling so much of our ‘stuff’?
a professional or on our own) it builds up until it becomes more apparent. It causes us to feel very uncomfortable in our own skin and often even in our day to day lives. This is how our energy bodies are trying to communicate that we need assistance. So, you need help? But what kind of help and who can provide it? This is where I can be of support. I work
The reason? We are all transforming. We are allowing aspects of ourselves to surface. We are choosing to increase our personal vibrations to become more of who we are and more of who we want to be. We are filling out our own shoes. Have you noticed that old habits and tendencies have been stirred up recently? These are your shadows; they are aspects of you that can help you to see where change needs to be made. Shadows are not negative. They offer a depth and level of insight that, without them, would be much harder for us to uncover. Shadows ruffle our energy and bring awareness to what needs to change within ourselves to bring about the changes we want to manifest in ourselves and in our lives. Why all the unsettled feelings? Why are our shadows surfacing? In order to shift on a vibrational level and claim our own power, we must first sweep ourselves clean of old energy which is no longer serving us. When we begin to take the form of who we really want to be, there is a lot of reflection, a lot of pondering and of course a lot of changes.

Change can feel quite scary. It is foreign and it’s the unknown. If we choose to shift and become a more whole version of ourselves, we do so with little to no understanding of what is around the corner and what we might find. So we become apprehensive. We begin to shuffle, maybe even outright avoiding our emotions in an attempt to stall, or to buy more time before making such a drastic decision. This is when we begin to feel our ‘stuff’ become amplified. This, in a way, is energetic pain. In our physical bodies when there is disharmony and we ignore it, our bodies will begin to send a signal via the nervous system that there is a problem. How we perceive this can be through pain. No one likes to be in pain, so usually that forces our hand and causes us to seek help or look within to find balance. When we feel like we are in the thick of our emotional and mental ‘stuff’, we are aware of our energetic situation, but if we choose not to work on it (either with

closely with each of my clients on an individual basis to see where we can bring more harmony and balance into your body and your life. We will work together to address your situation. As an intuitive energy worker I am able to sense where energetic disharmony lies within the aura and the body. I am reading your map and I will help to facilitate your journey. There is no need to have fear or hesitation. You are no longer peering around the corner on your own, hoping that what lies ahead is better than what you currently have. Working on our shadow aspects takes courage and sometimes we need encouragement to get there. As a facilitator I will gently guide and encourage you when necessary, but know that I will always honour and respect you and your comfort. When we are shifting it is a delicate matter that needs to be regarded as such. Working with ease and grace as well as gentleness, we allow the layers of our shadows to simply peel off on their own accord. It is through creating a sacred space (where you feel ready and comfortable to do this) that allows this process to unfold in a most beautiful way. Transformation is not linear, nor is it mechanical. This is where I feel so many modalities lack. There is no set treatment plan that I work with. This is about you and only you. This is about the present and what is real for you right now. By being able to observe your energetic and physical body simultaneously, I have the ability to read your energy body in real time. This allows us to see how the past has affected your present and where your present could take you into your future. Healing and transformation is about your journey. It is not a destination, although the more you journey the more clear and content one tends to become. Your journey begins with relaxation, by being able to let go and to trust - to trust in yourself and to trust in the process of your sessions. Truly being present during your process is where we find clarity, overcome obstacles and release that which is no longer needed. Letting go of expectations and preconceived notions is a must. Having a facilitator who can guide you and teach you how to follow the path you choose is pivotal to your success. Having a facilitator who will only offer you support, encouragement and insights from a place of nonjudgement and compassion is fundamental to being able to let go and to trust. Know that I hold the space for you to allow this process to unfold. Know that I offer all of my abilities and expertise to you. Know that I am centered and present at all times. Know that I am ready to serve you. Jackie specializes in Chakra Balancing, is a Certified Colour Sound Therapist, Reiki Master/Teacher and practices Hot Stone Massage at Golden Lady Wholistics. One of life’s most challenging things is being in a relationship with someone. Being aware of our own pre-set ‘reactivity’ due to past emotional hurts/trauma, in the moment, is a necessity so we don’t sabotage ourselves or the relationship.
Stepping up for yourself, reconnecting to all of you, allows YOU to see and hear YOURSELF as you have never been seen and heard by anyone before in your life, and then the fun begins again for you and in a relationship.
We all want a loving relationship that lasts but it is your relationship with yourself (and your connection to all of you) that stands the test of time and then, even when alone, you are not ever alone - you have you. I have arrived at that place. I see and hear me. I am connected to a ‘knowing’ in my body, that I am a loving, vulnerable person. And that allows me to no longer make it someone else’s job to make me feel loveable. And without that ‘reactivity’ getting in the way, I can truly enjoy a relationship. I know from my prior relationships and observing those of my clients, that sooner or later your past emotional issues will surface. Your own awareness of you and your ‘stuff’ can save your sanity. It’ll allow you to observe instead of reacting when things get tense during stressful times with your partner.
Polar Bear and 2 Cubs © Monica Castro
We can only truly see and hear each other as separate people when we can ‘show up’ as our true self, feeling present in our body, not in our head. That is the end of co-dependence and the beginning of ‘attuning’ with your own self which opens the door for ‘attunement’ in relationship (that feeling of being ‘at one’ with another human being).
It can be kind of scary - stepping up. But unless we make a change, nothing will change at all. Albert Einstein said: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Time to give ourselves a break from the insanity of the old programming interfering and stopping us from feeling the absolute JOY we can have each day in relationship with ourselves or partner.
One couple (that uses Biofeedback) has noticed a big difference in their relationships. Janet (37-yearsold) said that since doing Biofeedback, she is calmer and not as reactive with her partner over not being seen and heard by him. She can step back and catch herself in the moment, even with her children when they don’t hear her. Her partner, Barry, agreed and said that he is able to ‘show up’ more now and finds it easier to do so. He said their partnership feels renewed, with less triggers, and they are having fun again themselves. They don’t just focus on the children’s needs. Everyone’s needs are now being met. Biofeedback is a ‘saving grace’ in my life and for my clients too. It’s one of the best ways to improve your awareness of yourself and what’s really under the surface. It identifies your stressors (emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually) and then uses frequencies to retrain and rebalance your ‘reactivity’ to life on every level so you can process stress differently in your life. Once we are aware of what ‘hooks’ us into that temporary insanity (that makes us react the way we do), we can change it. The ‘aha’ moments and reconnection

When heaven comes into the classroom Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats
I am a retired teacher and counsellor with 37 years experience in the educational arena. Like most everyone that reads Mosaic Magazine I have had a variety of health and personal issues that brought me to my knees more than once. From debilitating back pain to thyroid cancer to divorce and the loss of an infant, I eventually found my way with the guidance of sacred mentors and the practice of holistic health, both personally and professionally. I would like to share a small part of my journey with you. “There will be a significant change in your life within three months.” These words were spoken to me after my Reiki Level 1 attunement in the mid 1990’s. Initially I was not sure what this significant change could be. However within this three-month time frame I became focused, unwavering, strong and inspired to a new purpose. Having been a counselor for over 25 years, I was well aware of the high stress of our student population. Teachers and administrators were not far behind. I fearlessly went about pitching and piloting a practical holistic health course for our highly stressed students in an Edmonton academic high school (1999-2007). It was timely, right and true. In our existing educational system we do not teach students how to trust their own knowing. We pride ourselves in teaching necessary critical thinking skills, from dissecting moral issues to working out a math problem. However, we do not teach our students how thinking affects our well-being. We do not teach our students how to be still. We do not teach our students how to be mindful. The practice of holistic health is missing in the education of the whole child.
reduce stress and increase overall well-being through holistic health practices. It is a non-religious handbook that details the ‘how to’ of teaching holistic health within any existing educational system. Students are given a world vision of health through the complementing of Eastern and Western health practices to help them reduce stress and increase their well-being. When Heaven Comes… Into the Classroom includes my personal and professional experiences on my journey to developing and teaching holistic health to students (where hands-on complimentary therapies were made available to them). It is an educational application of mind, body, and spirit awareness.

This is the gift of Peru world from our hearts... we use our heads, we ignore our pain, we walk in fear and it appears to me that many have no idea who they are. Our physical needs are overly satiated but we are starving for spiritual connection. A Shaman’s death is a perfect way to change this. It is generally birthed from a traumatic life altering experience where your whole perception of reality changes. You then separate yourself from personal attachment to circumstance, tap into the greater picture/vision of the whole, beginning to live your life attuned to this greater purpose. Of course it does not always happen this way. We often bury our pain and hide the wound.

The plant medicine of Ayahuasca creates a Shaman’s death, showing you all the aspects of yourself that are unhealed, unresolved and out of alignment with the light of God within. This means your personal demons (ego, fear, unworthiness, expectation, cynicism, loss and trauma). You know what I am talking about! You see them eye-to-eye, through metaphorical visions, feelings and purging, releasing the power and control they hold over you. Don Lucho (the Ayahuasqero at Kapitari) describes Ayahuasca as the greatest teacher of Oneness: “When you understand you are not separate from anything at all, you no longer have anything to run from, and you re-member the Divine resides within.” Judgment and criticism have no place in an open heart. by Sarah Salter-Kelly Shaman Peru has intimately opened my heart, touched my soul and made itself at home. Marked by its mystery, magic and medicine, it’s become a song whose melody sings of possibilities and wonderment that I had only caught glimpses of prior to my travels there. Through the years this song has gotten louder and I knew a time would come when I needed to share it. The moment came to pass during a Reiki 1 attunement I was giving last spring equinox. I had a powerful vision to bring a group to Peru by the fall equinox. I argued a little at first (as I have a tendency to do), however I felt the call in my heart. The details were precise - spend a week in Ayahuasca Ceremony at Kapitari to help people heal fear, then a week in the Sacred Valley with Juan Quispe and create a Mesa. Fine I thought, if I can get 10 people committed by June 30, I will do it. That was easier than I had anticipated. I quickly had five men and five women, including myself, ready for the adventure. It looked like the universe was having a strong hand in this. As a Shaman I am well versed in the spiritual trials and tribulations of our culture. Rarely do we navigate our

The intentions in my group with Ayahuasca varied from healing grief, trauma, depression and addiction to looking for purpose, meaning and sustenance. Our time in the jungle was difficult, humbling, beautiful and profound. The group bonded fast, enabling our circles to jump into an authentic heartfelt place from the first day. Each person faced the fears they had come to see... Each fear died well. Then it was time to take this new sense of self to the Sacred Valley of the Inca, to create a Mesa, with Paq’o Don Juan Quispe and myself. A Mesa is a healing bundle of stones, or objects, representing spiritual teachers, experiences or life’s gifts/lessons. In the traditions of the Peruvian Indio, they are wrapped in a cloth called a mestana, which is hand woven with the images of creation (Grandfather Sun, Grandmother Moon, complimentary opposites, the condor, the Apus, pachamama, etc.) thus imprinting what you are carrying with their energy. For the Q’ero, they are generally charged specifically with the Apus (mountain spirits) of the Sacred Valley. Creating my own Mesa has been a seven year process, growing and changing alongside me. Stones come and go in synch with the flow of my spirit. It is far from traditional - it is intimately personal and it changed my whole life. My www.MosaicMagazine.ca

most powerful life lessons, teachings and prayers exist therein. When I meditate with it, I see myself, OUTSIDE of my expectations as to whom I think I SHOULD be, and therefore shift my perspective around the events, issues and emotions that I need to learn from. It is an example of the best I can be and guides me to be a better person, knowing that the ‘big picture’ is much bigger than my wee human perception may conceive of and to put my faith in the hands of creation.
The Q’ero Indians have their own methods of working with a Mesa, offering teachings and initiations into this path. Juan Quispe is the older brother of my godchild and he bears genuine warmth that makes you break into a smile when you are around him (and want to hug him). I knew he was the perfect person to share the spiritual teachings of the Andes with my group. Juan gave us initiations at various sacred sites called Karpays, which translates to: “water to feed the fields of your soul.” There was a moment when we were on Apu Veronica and he gifted everyone with Pampamesayok Karpays (the initiation of an earth steward) when I felt this blissful white light surround my group in tune to the waterfall beside us, the glacier beyond us and I knew (in the way that you KNOW) that this rite of passage would change everyone’s life forever. Juan reminded the group that each person is responsible for growing these seeds of possibility, to take the time necessary to lay a solid foundation. Essentially, do not rush the process!
Because it mirrors my soul, it has lessons for me as to what ‘stuff’ I hang on to that no longer serves me. Perhaps I have a beautiful stone that speaks of a teaching that is complete for me, yet I am holding onto it because I love it and it’s pretty.... In this case I must release what does not grow corn (yield sustenance) and return to the earth the ‘stuff’ whose cycle is finished, so I may allow for the new to come. Sometimes we get so caught up with what we think we have now, we block the way for the birth of the new. These stones in Quechua are called khuyas and are put in your Mesa, becoming a seed of your highest self. For example one person may have a stone of unconditional love, another of a particular mountain spirit - both are related to the highest parts of our being. Both change as you begin to grow and understand who you are in relation to creation in a deeper, more mystical way. The unconditional love stone may guide you to see all the ways that you do not love unconditionally. This is how it teaches you. The mountain guide may look like your Grandfather, the one you have always felt protecting you. But now you are aware that this stone has grown... it is your grandfather, it is the mountain and it is YOU.
In the Sacred Valley a new sense of wonderment, joy, curiosity and excitement infused the group. The music that sings from my heart worked its way into the hearts of all present, changing the stories of who they thought they were, to a melody that is pure, profound and possible. This is the gift of Peru. Join me for the next journey March 26 - April 12, 2014. Sarah specializes in healing personal struggles, imbalance and trauma through ceremony and connection to the Sacred. I knew the creation of a Mesa would give each person in my group something substantial to take home with them, to touch, feel, smell and grow. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Giving up attack thoughts by Carmen Jubinville Spiritual Life Coach
So I wondered what my life would be like if I changed my thinking. Which thoughts really needed to go?
When I was desperate to solve my body image issues and destructive eating habits once and for all, I put all of my faith in one single teaching.
It was a pretty daunting task to realize that pretty much my entire thought system was mostly crap. It all needed a major overhaul but where does one begin?
The teaching was that I had to be willing to change the way I was thinking. “Give up all attack thoughts!” This teaching comes from A Course in Miracles (Foundation for Inner Peace, 1976) where it teaches us that: “Nothing else will work… But this way cannot fail.”
The Course teaches us to spend time in practice periods. During those practice periods we are to search our mind for any and all attack thoughts against anyone or anything. As each attack thought crosses our mind we are to repeat: “I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts about .” The idea behind this exercise is that once you give up your attack thoughts you will quickly begin to notice that you ‘see’ a different world.
Past © Doris Charest
In other words, our current attack thoughts are creating an effect in our lives. When we give up our attack thoughts we will begin to notice new effects. I can attest to this. The more I practiced letting go of attack thoughts the more peaceful my life became. My body image issues began to fade away and my destructive eating patterns slowly dissipated. Now I hardly struggle with food anymore. As I began to consider my thoughts surrounding the whole body image ordeal, I could see that every thought I had about my problems, my solutions and especially about myself was all very negative and even downright attacking. For instance, when it came to my body and my eating problems, I hated the fact that I struggled. I felt like I was cursed. I wished it away every single day of my life. When it came to my solutions I had tunnel vision. I thought that the only way I could solve my problems was if I started a new diet and if I deprived myself for days and weeks and sometimes even months.
These were the new effects - or the ‘new world I see’ as the Course would say - based on the work I did in giving up my attack thoughts. And so I ask you to consider these questions: What are you struggling with right now? What are your attack thoughts about this situation or person? Are you willing to let those attack thoughts go? And lastly, the thoughts I had about myself were that I was weak. I thought I was a failure. I thought I wasn’t enough. I thought I had no willpower. I hated my body and so much more. After taking a really honest look at my thinking I could no longer deny my attack thoughts. They were there and I was thinking them every single day, sometimes all day long. Every now and again I had positive thoughts but they weren’t enough to cancel out all of my negative and attacking thoughts.

#1 Secret to attract clients as a healer As a healer, you know how important it is to be able to attract clients. If you can’t attract clients, you can’t make money and if you can’t make m o n e y, likely you’ll end up stuck in a job that you’d rather not be doing. Unfortunately, most healers actually repel potential clients without even realizing they’re doing it. It’s time to turn this around so you can easily attract the clients you’re meant to work with! There is something particular that most healers do that repels their ideal clients instead of attracting them. It shows up when someone meets them and asks the question: “What do you do?” Now if you’re anything like I was in the past, you dread this question because you know it leads to a completely awkward conversation that typically ends with the person’s eyes glazing over. Can you relate? This happens all of the time for healers and it’s sad! If you can’t clearly explain what you do to one person, how are you ever going to be able to explain it in a way that attracts lots of clients? You can’t! I’d love to assist you in forever ending those awkward conversations. I’d love for you to answer the question “What do you do?” in a way that is MAGNETIC, that has your potential clients wanting to find out more.
Choosing to focus your healing abilities on helping people with real life problems is a great service to the world. It will cause you to be magnetic to MANY more clients and it will be easier for you to be paid well for what you do. So how do you answer the question: “What do you do?” By filling in the blanks to this line: “I help (type of people you work with) who are (challenge they’re facing).” That's it! Leave your modality out of it. This is the starting point. If they are an ideal potential client they will ask more questions... you are magnetic!

by Fia-Lynn Crandall Intuitive Business Consultant
See for yourself what’s more magnetic with this example. Imagine you are a 30-year-old single woman who’s lonely and worried there are no good men left. See which response is more magnetic for you, which one draws you in and has you asking for more information. Response #1: “I do a type of energetic healing that helps work on limiting beliefs.” Response 2: “I work with single women in their 30’s who are lonely and wondering if they’ll ever find love again.” Can you feel the difference? Go ahead and try it out for yourself. You’ll become magnetic to clients and no longer dread the question: “So what do you do?” Instead, you’ll be excited to share!

So what is the #1 secret to easily attract clients as a healer? The secret is this - you don’t answer the question: “What do you do?” by saying what you DO. Sound crazy? Well it’s true. And here’s why... Talking about what you do repels people. Even your most ideal clients will not be that interested in what you DO. They are way more interested in how what you do will impact their daily life. They have a real life problem and they want it fixed. They are single and they want great love. They are overweight and they want to be thin. They are sick of fighting with their partner and they want to feel loved and understood. In most cases they don’t actually care how you get them there. They’re much more concerned with the challenges they’re facing. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

by Linda Perry We have a lot of customers that ask about crystal wands - what they are and how to use them. If you’re interested in learning how to use them, whether it’s in your own healing practice or just for yourself, Crystal Wands, (Earthdancer, Findhorn Press Imprint 2009) by Ewald Kliegel is a great guide and reference. Ewald studied and practiced massage therapy since he was 19, later becoming a Naturopathic Doctor and lecturer in holistic therapies, reflexology and gemstone applications. He takes you through all the basics of using wands such as handling, care, cleansing, making crystal oils, choosing the right wand to use, muscle testing, etc. The most interesting part of the book is his use of crystal wands for massage. He goes through everything, step by step, with clear explanations and pictures using different techniques and types of strokes using both ends of the wand. Included is a reference list of 72 different crystals and how they affect the body. He’s also put together some practical applications to try such as: Wellness, Relaxation, Power, Beauty, Love, Protection, etc., where he explains techniques and the crystals to use. by Cheryl Chenoweth I thoroughly enjoyed reading One Great Year (Greenleaf Book/ Red Tuque Books, 2013) by two accomplished Canadian authors, Rene DeFazio and Tamara Veitch. The first in a series, this book stands on its own while maintaining an open storyline. This well-developed piece of fantasy adventure is fraught with conflict: good against evil, inner torment of heroes and villains and true love across time and distance. The story follows soul-mates Marcus and Theron across history and continents. They are Emissaries of their civilization who reincarnate through time, carrying the knowledge of their crumbling civilization at the end of its Golden Age. Desperate to remain connected with Theron, Marcus drinks an elixir intended for their adversary, Helghul, to retain his memories from one lifetime to another. What draws you in deeper is the integration of metaphysical concepts. Meditation, the chakras, out-of-body experience, telepathy and magic are interwoven throughout and are integral in the unfolding of plot and character development. One Great Year is justifiably a recipient of Honourable Mention seals in the New York and London Book Festivals. It is one of those books that you can read on a number of levels and be thoroughly engaged from whatever perspective you approach it. Cheryl is a staff member at Ascendant Books (#105, 10310 - 124th St., Edmonton, 780-452-5372, www.ascendantbooks.com) and a student at Northern Star College, recently having completed the Tarot and the Chakras series.

Uncovering one great secret Being born human we are fortunate to be able to ask the fundamental questions: “What is the nature of the Universe? What is it all about?” Throughout our lives many of us wonder, but how does one go about actually finding the answers? Every experience in my 50 years has nudged me closer to the answers, but my journey took a fast track in September 2009. It was then that my co-author Tamara Veitch and I first began researching our novel One Great Year (Greenleaf Book/Red Tuque Books, 2013), in an effort to create an uncommon life together. Initially all we had was the story premise - Marcus had past life memory and his soul mate Theron didn’t. He would pursue her through lifetimes as they were reincarnated into fantastic adventures. Early on I asked the question: “What would the 13,000 year old Marcus know that the rest of us do not?” We were led to Plato, the ancient mystery schools, shamanism, and legends. We awakened to the answers all around us, like portals that miraculously appeared. Everywhere we turned, the true nature of the Universe revealed itself because we were willing and open seekers. Science, biology, ancient history, philosophy, mysticism, spirituality, religion, art, music, they all pointed to the same thing - a connection. We noticed an interwoven grid, material and energetic, which belies the illusion of separation and individuation. What is the nature of the Universe and why should we care? It’s quite simply a hologram, an illusion of individuality, and we should care because once that is understood we realize that we are far more able to design the illusion with our thoughts and actions. We accept with fascination and resignation the lesson being presented us, our attachment and resistance depart and with them depression, anger and sadness. When we realize that we are all One on a deeper, unseen level and that what we do to others directly affects us, we make more loving and compassionate choices.
shows the Maya as the veil between our perceived reality and the unknowable. Maya literally means: “that which does not exist.” Incredibly the Vedic texts contain the knowledge that the physical world is made up of atoms and atoms have an internal structure resembling the solar system. The significance of this model for us is the knowledge that everything material is made of atoms. These tiny ‘dots’ that (though they seem to create solid objects) never actually touch, are 99% free space, not solid, and it is only our limited perception that separates these vibrating energies as dense objects.

Imagine a holographic model where reality is created by our consciousness and the individual’s perspective affects his/her experience. The Vedas describe the Yuga cycle - a cosmic cycle in which humanity rises and falls in its awareness and enlightenment. This cycle, later called the Great Year by Plato, is the backdrop for One Great Year.
We looked at the evidence, ancient wisdom and knowledge and asked ourselves: “What if this is how it really works?” Science tells us that the universe is expanding faster than the speed of light. Could it be consciousness itself that is expanding and that our awakened state comes in the wake of that expansion? For some people the awakening has begun; for others this is all very confusing, until they see it play out on the page in One Great Year (or come see us speak at the Body, Soul & Spirit Expos in Vancouver and Edmonton). Suddenly, the fine inner and outer workings of the Universe are gently revealed and through his fantastic adventures Marcus shows us how the human experience might just be designed. One Great Year is available at A Sense of Serenity (www.asenseofserenity.ca) and Ascendant Books (www.ascendantbooks.com) in Edmonton and Self-Connection Books in Calgary or at www.onegreatyear.com

Oracle Answer Before you read this page, think of a question you would like an oracle answer for.
The Moon Aaaaaaaooooooo! The wolf’s howl urges our awareness upward into the night sky to the magical moon. The message of the tarot’s Moon card is one of illuminating our illusions in order to move forward on our path towards wholeness and enlightenment. The moon is about duality; it’s both the counterpart and the creation of the sun (as the moon’s light is a reflection of the sun’s light.) The sun only lights up one side of the moon, a representation of the conscious and unconscious minds. A powerful celestial body, the moon’s gravitational pull has enough force to cause all the water on Earth to rise twice a day. This also has a great effect on our bodies, which are over 70% water. Because of this, the moon’s magnetic gravitational pull can be used to energetically draw out and illuminate our distorted beliefs and shadow aspects for the purposes of healing and integration. The Moon card is rich with symbolism representing a reconciliation of opposites, a balance between dualities, and following our true path. On the card we see a crayfish (an ancient, primal creature, low on the ladder of evolution) crawling from the waters of our unconsciousness, beginning its journey down the path to illumination. On the shore two animals howl at the moon - a dog (left) representing domestication and conformity to societal standards, and a wolf (right) representing our wild nature or untamed desires. They represent two aspects of our unconscious animalistic drives. Also, on either side of the card are matching grey stone towers signifying good and evil. The grey color suggests that we reserve judgment (not be swayed into the polarity of black and white) but remain neutral and centered with compassionate detachment. Through the middle is a dirt path which does not waver to either side. It leads into the moonlight and the violet mountains, representing selfmastery. Sixteen rays emanate from the moon and 16 more fall to the Earth representing a Divine spark of energy… God’s hand reaching down to assist us on our path to enlightenment. The Moon is a very powerful card. On a personal level, what is required is a deep honest look at our drives and motives. If approached with truth and a pure heart, the Moon will offer
30

much assistance and illumination. If we deny, repress or project our shadow outwards, then our vision will be distorted and we will not see ourselves or others clearly. The moon is a powerful ally for manifestation. The tricky part about manifesting in polarity consciousness is this: while we set our intentions with our conscious mind to attract our goals and desires, our unconscious mind is also manifesting, except without our conscious awareness. Our subconscious is home to any previous wounding we have experienced as well as any programming or conditioning we may have received in childhood. It is where our core beliefs take root and form our insecurities and negative repetitive thought patterns.

Since we seek healing, both consciously and unconsciously, our unconscious will attract to us people, places or situations that will draw our attention to our original wounding. Without introspection, we mistake the hurt we attracted as the original wounding. We then take it out on the person who drew our awareness to it in the first place! Some refer to this as ‘having our buttons pushed’. This scenario will continue until we finally recognize a pattern and begin to look at ourselves and our (over) reaction.
Another way the subconscious mind manifests is by what Carl Jung refers to as projection. The unnameable, unattractive aspects of our subconscious are hard to see and accept in ourselves, but easy to notice in other people. Along with this generally comes harsh judgments, criticism and condemnation. This is where shadow work is handy. Like a giant mirror the moon invites us to take an honest look at ourselves and reflect on what we see. This way we view firsthand our primal, animalistic nature, our impulses, our insecurities and our outmoded beliefs. Once we shed light on and acknowledge these forgotten, neglected or buried parts of ourselves we can begin to heal, as well as recognize them when they worm their way into our behavior. The trick is not to condemn and judge ourselves but rather to view ourselves with compassion. As we find peace within ourselves, it is reflected in our outer world.

We can augment any spiritual work we do using the moon’s phases. Moon rituals are an age-old way of amplifying our intention through meaningful action. A full moon is a potent time for releasing negativity. The culmination of the full moon is naturally followed by a period of waning energy - perfect for letting go of negative thoughts, habits, people and/or circumstances because the attachment to them will diminish as the moon decreases. One of my favorite full moon rituals involves a ‘soul release letter’. A general format for a soul release letter goes something like this: “Dear ______, when you did this I felt ______ and it was so intensely negative that I no longer require your participation in my life. Thank you for teaching me lessons in hardship and _____ for they provided me with a deeper compassion and ______. I hereby release you in love and light. Thank you, I love you. I’m sorry; please forgive me.” Burn this letter in a fireproof container in the full moonlight. If you’re really gung-ho, you can then pull out a selenite wand, call on Archangel Michael and do some etheric cord cutting. Olden day farmers knew the moon had a positive influence on the growth of their crops and used the new moon as a time for planting. We can also take this opportunity and use a new moon to grow new ideas, skills, behaviors or business endeavors. One way of doing this is by writing an intentions list. Make sure to include: “I wish to invite the following things into my life or something better, for the highest good of all concerned.” Some people choose to write their intentions list on a piece of naturally made paper (free of bleaches or dyes) so that they may literally plant their lists into the ground around growing plants or trees. The symbolism of planting your goals is a physical action that creates a synergy along with your mental action (writing your list) that produces a more successful outcome than either act alone. Then take concrete steps to help germinate your goals. Remember that we will never manifest more than we believe we deserve, or more than what is in line with our karma. The Moon card often appears in readings when you are unsure of the path you are on or your destination. The
www.MosaicMagazine.ca
message here is to stay on course with trust in your inner knowing. If your question is regarding career or finances, it may indicate a need for reflection. Positively, it could lead to artistic expression in the form of music, art or writing that could yield positive results and opportunities. Alternatively, it could refer to lack of progress due to deep rooted fears and anxieties. You must come out of your shell and face the challenges ahead. If you asked about relationships, the Moon could indicate the unconscious projections onto the other. A time for selfexamination is necessary. On the other hand, lovers often gaze at the full moon together. The Moon card could indicate a period of dreamy romance with highly charged emotions. Be mindful to present yourself as you are and not who you think your partner may prefer. Regarding relationships, the Moon card could also indicate unknown aspects of your partner that lay just beneath your perceptions. Although they may be saying and doing all the right things, something may be amiss. Delay making any commitments; all may not be as it appears. If your question pertains to health, the Moon suggests you trust your body’s instincts. If a diagnosis does not feel right, get a second opinion. In a reading regarding a change in lifestyle or habit, the Moon signifies a change that requires vigilance. Stay on track! Thank you for joining me in sharing the Moon card’s many blessings. May your journey be luminous and yield substantial growth, integration and joy. Raya Elyse reads Tarot at Ascendant Books, www.AscendantBooks.com. Esoteric Explorations
Making choices and the Solar Plexus by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist
choices that maintain a healthy body and mind. What are we not doing? We are not trying to prove, justify or defend who we are nor do we put others in that position.
As we make our way through the chakras I would like to remind everyone that it is important to explore and question where we are in our journey in a compassionate manner.
We are not taking on tasks or situations that are too big for us. When we do this we compromise our fire and it leads to indigestion, as it’s too much for the body-mind to handle. This eventually burns us out and over time we find it hard to be enthusiastic about anything.
The solar plexus connects us to our fire center, our passion and the ability to confidently manifest our desires. It’s also the source of our vitality so what we’re looking to experience in this chakra is a nice steady flame, as opposed to a forest fire or a little matchstick. Fire is transformative. On a physical level it turns the food we consume into fuel for the body and on the mental level it turns the wandering mind into the discerning mind. If the solar plexus is functioning well, we take actions that move us upwards and onwards to a more satisfying life and the beginning of greater vision. Two words associated with the solar plexus are will and power. When we are comfortable in our own skin we feel clear, powerful and can more easily move towards goals that feed our passion. We experience aligned will. What does ‘aligned will’ look like? We move at a rhythm and pace that is right for us and in doing so, we make
32

What does that look like? Be committed to your journey without feeling you need to be serious and stern. Be curious about where you are strong or where you may need some help and let go of rigid ideas/beliefs that promote an attitude of right and wrong. Don’t assume that your answer is the right answer for everyone.
Alternatively, we are not timid about confidently reaching for our goals. We don’t keep ourselves smaller than we are, nor self-consciously look over our shoulder to see what everyone else thinks about our choices. We don’t feel superior nor inferior to others.
This is the chakra where we meet and spend time developing the discerning mind. What does that look like? We question instinctive attractions that keep us locked into unhealthy physical and emotional patterns. As we commit to developing the ‘discerning mind’, over time, we more easily recognize and say no to choices that harm us and yes to choices that promote confidence, aliveness and clarity. In recognizing that we are the ‘choice makers’ we accept responsibility for the choices we make. One of the most freeing, enlightening and empowering statements to make is: “I am making a choice to…” However you end that sentence, the potential for liberation and self-empowerment is there.

Please note that this applies to adults as children aren’t yet in a position where they are fully in charge of their life. It is however a good idea to teach them these principles and it is extremely beneficial when they observe adults who behave in this manner. People who are fixers may recognize themselves in this chakra. Consider what it would be like to first fill your physical, mental and emotional bucket and then from a place of vibrancy inspire rather than fix. People who are strong in this center can be good at motivating and inspiring others. HOMEWORK: Remember that all the chakras work together so if the root or navel chakras are not functioning in a healthy manner, it will affect the solar plexus. If, after reading this article, you can relate to some of the challenges associated with the solar plexus here are some suggestions. Engage in body-mind practices that encourage paying attention to your own rhythm and pace. This is especially true if you came from a family of over or under-achievers. Over-achievers over extend and burn out; under-achievers collapse and experience low fire. Note what happens when you attempt to realize a goal - do you push until you burn out or collapse and fizzle out? To figure out how healthy you are in your solar plexus look to see how healthy your digestion, assimilation and elimination are. If you don’t have healthy fire none of the above will work well. Are you unable to slow down and relax without help from pills, alcohol or doing something to exhaust yourself until you collapse? Do you then need a variety of stimulants to get you going such as overdoses of caffeine or drugs? On the other end of the scale, do you need to build your fire, passion, confidence and learn how to take action in your life? Look for mental and physical activities that build strength and confidence. That might be physical activities that help you feel strong as well as courses that develop a healthy and discerning mind. Healing with inner wisdom showing up as a manifestation because my body was telling me I was ready to heal. I wondered what this growth had to tell me, what information my inner wisdom had for me. We all have the energetic capacity to tap into every cell, every bone, every muscle and organ in our body and receive the information it has for us. I was ready to dive into this work and avoid surgery if possible.
Living With A Chunk of Blue Inside © Cathy McMillan — www.quirkyartcafe.ca
I had been working on the curriculum of Healing From The Core since 2006 and was heading to West Virginia to complete part of the training. It didn’t seem like a coincidence that, at the same time, I was also facing another one of my own healing journeys. It wasn’t long after the course started that I was able to start the dialogue with my cells and my inner wisdom. As I relaxed, I dropped my awareness down into my body. I was immediately drawn/called to my right ovary. As I acknowledged what was coming to my mind’s eye, I engaged in the process - what did my inner wisdom have to tell me? What did the growth feel like? What did it look like? What was coming to my mind’s eye?
by Ruth Isley Age had always been just numbers to me, but when I turned 50 last year, suddenly my hormones started playing boss. Then, to my surprise, I was diagnosed with an eight centimeter growth on my right ovary. I had been feeling pain in my lower right side for some time, so when an ultrasound report indicated a growth on my right ovary, my doctor quickly scheduled me for surgery. However, I had been practicing embodied mindfulness for some time and understood that the growth was now

I immediately saw a baby and the knowledge of never being able to have another one overwhelmed me. I began to weep. The sensation of letting go of that time in my life, that life giving part of me, filled me with sorrow. I felt as though I was mourning a very important part of me and I was unsure of the future. As I wept, there appeared in my mind’s eye, a separation of my ovary and the baby. The vision of the baby then turned into the face of my father and with that came the feeling of hate throughout my body. The therapist (who was working with me) asked me what I felt when his face appeared. As I replied: “hate, hate” my heart hardened and I was in a place I had not at all imagined going to. This feeling took over my body as his face brought back feelings of fear and anger. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

My father passed away years ago. I had blocked out his death and a lot of childhood memories that I thought did not serve me. I could not even tell you the year he passed away because I just chose not to remember. It had been very traumatic. It was a long weekend many years ago when family friends came over to tell us that my father had drowned. The agony of those words and the looks on their faces will stay with me forever. They couldn’t find him. They said he was moving from one boat to another and had lost his balance. And although they dove into the lake looking for him, it was the deepest part of the lake and they could not find him. My father could not swim. Finally his body was recovered and I cannot remember anything in that time period except for the overwhelming grief. I just remember crying and crying a river of tears. And after the funeral there were days and months of sadness, an empty cold sadness. The sadness seemed to turn into anger over the years and then turned into a haunting like I’d never felt before. All the negative feelings I had about my father were surfacing. There were so many memories and very few brought happiness to my heart. Instead many were of fear, of not being good enough, of being unwanted. My heart had grown heavy with these emotions. I worked and worked on forgiveness until I actually believed I had forgiven him for his ways and how it had affected me. And there I was, all these years later at this course, on a journey to discover the message of the growth on my ovary, when all those old feelings came back to me. How incredible - that I had manifested a growth in my body from my buried emotions. Then I became curious. What did the growth have to say to me? As I contacted the inner wisdom of the growth and started dialoguing with it, it filled me with information. These negative emotions were providing me a path to follow about what I needed to move forward and heal. The thoughts and beliefs that got stuck protecting me (back then) were not serving me any longer; they needed to be transformed. As I sank into my heart and processed the sensations (what it looked like, what this growth needed, what I needed), I started to feel better.
every cell, dancing throughout my body right into the marrow of my bones. The face of my father turned from a harsh looking face that filled me with fear into a soft, happy smile that I could love. My body was drinking it in and the round hard growth (that I had envisioned to represent my growth) turned into this beautiful white flower that was opening for the world to share. I stayed with the beautiful feeling of love and nourishment and, in my mind’s eye, I saw white doves fly out from my right ovary (and I continued to see that for the rest of that day). At that moment I held my hands out and embraced my father’s energy and I felt an abundance of love for him. I was free and so was he - I had let him go. Following the session I went to the washroom and to my surprise, I saw evidence of something I had physically let go of there. I truly felt blessed by the entire experience. After arriving back home, I was scheduled for surgery for the growth on the following day. Fortunately, I was able to schedule an ultrasound appointment for another view of the ovary first. I knew I was different, lighter and I felt as though the eight centimeter growth was gone, but I needed proof. The ultrasound technician searched very thoroughly for the growth and much to my delight she responded that my ovaries both looked like a 20-year-olds, beautiful and perfect! I was able to cancel the surgery and celebrate with my family. The power in this work is accessing all the information your inner wisdom has to tell you. Each of our cells holds the wisdom we are searching for to empower ourselves and to become the people we were meant to be. It is our birthright to have access to all the wonderful energy and information of our bodies. Ruth has been working in the business and healing world for the past 30 years. Her business, Inner Wisdom Connections, includes bodywork with your inner wisdom, Healing from the Core, meditation, CranioSacral Therapy, Zero Balancing and Partnership Facilitating. It felt so good in my heart to be able to let go of those thoughts, those beliefs that previously acted as protection but now were chains holding me back from moving into the person I was meant to be. As the process unfolded and energy began to transform, I was able to let the negative feelings go. It felt like a cleansing. And then my heart opened, I was filled with joy and my entire body felt lighter. I could feel the love in each and www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Places I Love
Paris has something for everyone by Connie Brisson J’aime ca. [I love it.] That’s what I’m thinking as we are sitting in a taxi driving from Charles de Gaulle Airport heading into Paris. As I looked around, the trees looked like our trees and the buildings looked like our buildings. I’m thinking we could be anywhere - maybe even Kansas. When Marcel worked in Kansas over two years ago, Gabrielle and I went there to see him and the trees/buildings looked just like this. But then, I saw the Eiffel Tower standing majestically in the distance and murmured to myself: “Connie, we’re not in Kansas anymore.” Soon we were driving around the famous Arc de Triomphe (from which 12 avenues radiate out, like the spokes of a wheel). Its construction was ordered in 1806 by Napoleon, the French Emperor but was not completed until 1836. This is one of the most famous landmarks of Paris. Our hotel, Chambiges Elysees (www.hotelchambiges.com) was just off the Champs Elysee, one of Paris’ (if not the world’s) most famous avenues. I chose this hotel because it was #11 (of a billion possible in Paris) on Trip Advisor. As our cab driver took a right at a Louis Vuitton store, telling us we were close, I pinched myself. Another left at the Fendi store (after the Dior, Gucci, and yet another Louis Vuitton store) and we arrived at our small hotel. I’d never seen SO many luxury brand stores in such tight quarters, not even in Vegas. I sighed (a French sounding sigh, of course). Alors, our hotel was quaint but pricy (over $500 CDN per night), although a basic European breakfast was included (cheese, bread, cold cuts). The hotel had free WiFi which pleased my 13-year-old daughter, Gabrielle. In Paris, we sought out the usual tourist lures. First, we took a 30 minute train ride to the extravagant Palace of Versailles (www.chateauversailles.fr), the last home of Louis XVI, with 2,300 rooms! The line-up was long (over two hours). Once inside, there were so many tourists (we were packed like sardines) that it was unbearably claustrophobic and the heat made it even worse (late August). In the end, I couldn’t believe that some people really lived in such opulent extravagance and that I was now, over 200 years later, standing in a place that had played a part of the French Revolution. Of course, we also went to the Louvre and bless them (after only a one hour line up), they made it quite easy to
36
Mosaic Magazine — Winter 2013
find Mona Lisa once we were inside. We also took a cruise on the Seine River to see the many architectural highlights of Paris. We later bought a pink metal lock, wrote our initials and date on it, and then locked it on one of the famous ‘lock bridges’ that the cruise goes under. We also visited the Notre Dame Cathedral where Gabrielle and I lit a candle and said a prayer. To celebrate Marcel’s 60th birthday we went to the Eiffel Tower’s 58 Tour Eiffel restaurant, (www.restaurantstoureiffel.com), on the first tier of the tower. I pre-booked it about a month ahead as it is a popular place. It was a pricey event (about $115 CDN per person for a pre-set dinner meal, not including drinks) and although the service was really slow, the food was good and the wonderful view of Paris made it a special event. One day we took the metro to visit Montmartre, the city’s highest quarter, a hill in the north of Paris (130 metres high). Oh yes, there’s a whole lot of stairs to climb to get there! Montmartre is primarily known for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré Cœur and also for art/painters. Long ago, many artists had studios or worked around Montmartre such as Salvador Dalí, Amedeo Modigliani, Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian, Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. Today there is a square where many artists gather and sketch portraits of tourists and where you can buy the work of local artists. In 1989 I had my portrait sketched there by Steffi and I could not believe when she was still there this summer, 24 years later. We had her sketch Gabrielle for about $75 CDN. It’s an amazing keepsake she’ll have forever. But the highlight of Paris for me was not the artists, designer boutiques or historical sites, but our late night strolls when we would wander, passing different cafes, listening to the live music on every street corner and immersing ourselves into the unexplainable magic of Paris at night. Mais oui, lastly, when you’re in Paris, I would highly recommend a wonderful Lebanese restaurant we discovered: Al-Ajami (58, rue Francois 1er - 75008 Paris, www.ajami.com). We had the usual traditional dishes that left our tummies tres content. It’s easy to enjoy Paris, no matter what it is that you love to do. There is truly something there for everyone! www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Artist’s Gallery
Because it pleases my soul by Willie Wong People ask me why I paint.
Princess Miracle © Willie Wong
Well, my answer is this: I can’t do anything else. I don’t ski, skate, dance or play golf... I’m just not that sort of person (you know, the competitive sort who finds fulfillment in the journey to victory, whether it is against a competitor, nature or a personal victory over oneself). Instead, I find fulfillment in quiet atonement with nature and all this world has to offer. What else can I do but express the joy I experience in that atonement, so I paint. I paint flowers because of the botanical wonder and beauty I find in each and every one. I paint landscapes because of the escape they give me, to get lost in an almost perfect environment. I paint people, probably my favourite subject, because I can’t help but be intrigued by the complexity of the human condition from their joyous smiles to their sorrow filled eyes.
Forest Floor © Willie Wong
In the 90’s I made many teaching trips to Inuvik. The ancient, everlasting and fascinating culture I experienced there inspired my many works on the northern lights. It was there I witnessed the spectrum of color moving against the night sky, something that cannot be easily forgotten. I paint and repaint the memory of those dancing lights still to this day and for this reason it is the subject I’m probably best known for. It’s a challenge to survive as an artist, but I can truly say I do it because it pleases my soul. I take pride that there is not much monetary gain in the pieces I create. It is the work itself which makes me a happier person. I find the most joy in experimenting, researching and creating art with students, especially when everyone shares the same joy in the end.

(Italian) With heart and soul
When shame isn’t yours by Connie Brisson Shame came to see me last week. She surprised me, as she always does. But I knew her as soon as I saw her. You see, Shame and I have history.
Then I remembered my mother telling me that her mother (my Baba) ‘scolded’ her when she found out that Mom was pregnant with me. After all, my mother was almost 40 years old and in the early 1960’s, it was apparently a ‘disgrace’ for someone so old to be having another child especially when she already had another four children that were already all in school.
I never expect Shame or invite her because we aren’t friends. And there have been very long periods where I even forget that she exists… But she has never forgotten me.
In response, my mother felt very shamed… Because I was inside her, I felt that too. As a result, Shame and I bonded and have been meeting (in very vulnerable places) ever since.
One of my first big memories of Shame was a Christmas when I was six or seven years old. I was trying to physically stop a fight that was starting between one of my brothers and my Dad, and in response, that brother hit me so hard - not once, but twice - that it changed me forever. I didn’t expect it, I didn’t understand why he did it and, because I was just a little girl who didn’t grasp the complexity of what was going on, I just felt shamed - that it was somehow my fault. After all these years of self-development, I consciously know that Shame can not come to visit me without some type of personal invitation from me. Coincidentally (if there is such a thing), just days later, I had an epiphany in an iRest yoga class taught by Darlene Klassen (www.fullcirclewt.com). Darlene asked us to bring up something that was an issue for us (in our mind) and to hold it on one side. For me, that was the recent visit from Shame. Then she asked us to hold something opposite up (for me, the things I am proud of) and it wasn’t until that moment that I realized that I’ve been grouping ‘shame’ and ‘ashamed’ as one feeling/thing all my life. There are things in my life where I felt ‘ashamed’ because of what I’ve done (and I can try to make amends for those) and then there are other times in my life where I feel I have been ‘shamed’ by someone else in a circumstance where I didn’t feel that I’d done anything wrong. Then there were the moments when Shame merged effortlessly into ashamed and the two became blurred as one for me. This was an ‘aha’ moment for me because I know that energy follows energy (the Law of Attraction). I know that I’ve been attracting Shame into my life but I didn’t know why - where was the core, the root?

For me Shame invokes a feeling that I am not good enough, that I’ve done something wrong or that I’m bad.
My most recent visit with Shame was painfully routine. While I was trying to do the ‘right’ thing in another challenging family situation, I was surprised and then devastated by how this person treated me. I was so hurt that Shame could not HELP but jump in to say hello. Whenever I’m traumatized, I now faithfully turn to bodywork to help me because I know that much of who we are is held in our unconscious. Bodywork is a way to release long held patterns that we do not consciously understand or remember.
In a Rosen Method session with Mariette Berinstein (www.rosenmethod.ca), she told me something life changing - she said that only someone else can shame you. We can NOT ‘shame’ ourselves. So when someone else tries to shames you, it actually isn’t about you - it’s only about them. When I tested her theory against my old Shame memories, I knew it was true. People who ‘shame’ you or me are really ashamed of themselves on some level, consciously or unconsciously. Then, I instantly remembered recently holding a beautiful new baby, thinking how innocent she was. It made me remember that I was once innocent too. When I was in utero and later a newborn, when my Mom was feeling all of this shame, I was innocent. I didn’t do anything wrong; that was her stuff, my Baba’s stuff and who knows how many generations of women in our family before that (with all their ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ rules). And as soon as I had that awareness, it was like a swoosh of energy came from my head and swept through my chest, down into my body. In that moment, my body experienced a peacefulness that was so blissful and unusual, that I could feel it changing me, healing me. We can never change what’s happened to us in life, but we can change how we experience it. When we find the truth, the root, we are always set free by it. And even adversaries like Shame can come to free us… www.MosaicMagazine.ca
