In this Mosaic… After that I began to collect many, many images of Ganesh. In fact, a few years ago, one of Gabbey’s little girlfriends came over for a playdate to our house. At one point during the visit she innocently remarked to me: “You sure do have a lot of elephants in this house.” Ganesh is also the god of prosperity and wisdom so it is very good to have a statue of Ganesh in your home. To honour and thank him for his help, place a drop of cream/milk on his trunk every day. When my life is difficult, I light a candle in front of my favorite Ganesh statue and ask for his help through my storm. Once I do this, I start to relax as I remind myself to have faith that I am protected by another realm that may be unseen, but is still very potent. I am not alone in any struggles in my life.

boccabellaphoto.com

When I’m receiving a healing session, it’s very important for me to have an intention and also to call on Spirit Helpers to assist me. I always call on Ganesh at these appointments because I really want him to remove any obstacles I have inside of me that are stopping me or blocking me from having a better life (conscious ones, but especially the unconscious ones). by Connie Brisson Ganesh is one of the Spirit Helpers I love the most and this cover’s painting of Ganesh by Jayna Simpson is one of my favorites. I have a love for Ganesh that began about 20 years ago when Skye MacLachlan gifted me with one after a tarot reading. I was a “baby” then, just new to the magical world of Spirit and all its synchronicities, and had come to Skye for guidance about a difficult family dynamic. I barely knew Skye at that time but at the end of one reading, she reached behind and picked up a wooden statue of an elephant. She handed it to me and said that her guides told her to give it to me. Then she explained to me that this was GANESH, the Hindu elephant god who could remove obstacles in one’s path but who could also create obstacles if something was harmful for you. I was skeptical about this elephant, but I was also very curious too. I was especially curious about the deeper reason of receiving such a “gift.” I have not been gifted many things in life from someone I barely knew (like Skye), so it seemed monumental that she would give me a Ganesh when I was just another client to her. I was intrigued and in awe. What did it mean? I went home and began to research Ganesh. I learned that energetically he is a very strong and protective force. He can clear away barriers that may be hindering your progress, goals or purpose. You can ask Ganesh to always walk before you, to guide your way and to remove any obstacles on your path. Essentially, he can help you with everything, if you just ask him. And that’s what I started to do...

Tooth worms and decay The history of dentistry presents an interesting perspective on intellectual, technological and material evolution. In Sumar, around 5000 B.C., tooth worms were perceived to be the cause of dental decay. The expectation was that worms could bore small holes in teeth and hide inside. Doctors of the day would expose the nerve in the tooth, thinking it a worm and remove the culprit. “Quite the thrill,” without anesthetic! This worm etiology persisted up to the 1700’s. George Washington had false teeth fabricated, not of wood as commonly thought, but rather with gold, ivory, human and animal teeth (horse or donkey). That was very progressive - for its day. The first electric dental drill was in use by the 1880’s and the air turbine drill made its debut in 1957. The first dental x-ray was made in 1896 and Lillian Lindsey became the first British female dentist in 1895. The anesthetic ether was introduced around 1850 and quick acting Novocain made an appearance about 50 years later. To be honest, most dentists are very capable in their technical skills. It has been the dental materials used to repair tooth damage that has left the profession wanting. The search for a tooth filling material advanced with gold, a favorite for those who could afford it, and by 1770 porcelain false teeth were available. Filling materials of tin-foil, lead, radioactive thorium and an amalgammercury blended material were in use by the 1820’s.

esthetic looking, metal and mercury free, white composite filling. However, being a plastic-like material, concerns of plasticizers, BPA and estrogen mimickers ensued. The search for the perfect filling material is still ongoing today. It has been the synergistic blending of the intellectual, technological and material worlds that finally brings us to biocompatible, strong materials with tooth-like yielding properties. A dental restorative material (with properties approximating actual tooth structure) is finally available for the first time in the history of dentistry. The technology to capture 3-dimensional computerized images of the prepared tooth and to precisely fashion the perfect fitting ceramic filling to be bonded to the broken tooth is actually available. This one appointment procedure came into its own around the turn of the new millennium.

Ceramic is a biocompatible material thereby addressing the most pressing systemic fallout concerns of previous dental materials. Additional developments have recently introduced a composite replacement material utilizing a ceramic like, direct delivery restorative. It’s priced like a composite filling without the potential exposure concerns and more durable too.

The latest dental ceramic advancement provides for complete tooth replacement, with a strong ceramic dental implant material. These ceramic implants offer unparalleled biocompatibility, bioinertness and hypoallergenicity. Researchers are now working on a new filling material that will induce the nerve inside the tooth to regenerate itself thereby circumventing the need for root canal treatments and their potential systemic effects. What will they think of next… Only time will tell how dentistry will evolve in the future. Historically there have been some durable and strong dental filling materials but most are fraught with unintended side effects including potential systemic consequences. A lot of us have experienced the recent evolution in dental materials through the fillings placed during our life span. The amalgam filling was the “standard of dentistry” for most of the 20th century. Durable, strong and affordable but concerns of potential exposure to the mercury content encouraged development of the more

Exactly what you need

For a year now, I’ve been listening to the teachings of Matt Kahn. His definition of self-love is simple: say to yourself all the words you never heard as a child and that you still need to hear. Easy! So I started saying things to myself like: “I want you,” “I love you,” “You are beautiful,” but nothing happened. I didn’t feel any different inside. Then one day I was listening to a Matt Kahn audio and during it, he had his audience repeat a mantra for seven minutes. For some reason that stayed with me and the next time I sat down to do my “I love you” mantra, I decided to go for a full seven minutes. That changed the experience for me! Around the five-minute mark, emotion started bubbling up in me, and as I kept saying “I love you,” tears started rolling down my cheeks. At one point I noticed seven minutes had passed, but because of the depth of my emotion, I decided to keep saying “I love you.” Eventually the emotion passed and I returned to what I call my “still point” - a place of calm. That was a powerful experience and felt healing, even though I couldn’t define what exactly had happened, besides the obvious. I thought it might be worth doing again. The next night, I tried a different statement. I worked with “I want you” and the same thing happened. At about the five-minute mark, emotion started bubbling up and as I continued saying “I want you” my emotion became more and more intense until, after a half hour, it ebbed away and I returned to my still point. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

For the next two months, I did what I dubbed my “seven+ minute process” every night using statements that intuitively felt right. Some statements brought forth excruciating emotional pain and it could take up to an hour and a half before I’d find my still point again. All the while, as the pain flowed up and out, I continued repeating my statement, sometimes modifying it slightly, as guided by my intuition. A few times, I also spontaneously imagined myself at different ages (a four-year old, a teen, a young adult) and amazingly, some ages triggered stronger emotional responses than others, even while maintaining exactly the same statement. It was a heart wrenching, intense and deep two months! Since that time, I have discovered many ways to use this process (for physical, relationship, financial and fear issues) and, as a result, I have had some amazing experiences. Although the benefits of my “seven+ minute process” have not always been immediately evident, the processes have always felt healing and there are definitely things in my life that have shifted since I first began doing them. Most notably, within days of completing a particularly gruelling series of processes, I had my first conversation with the man with whom I now share the easiest and most beautiful relationship of my life. Most importantly, though, as I am giving myself exactly what I need, I feel I’m finally experiencing self-love. When facilitating sessions with clients, I help them to determine what they most need to hear, as per the concern they’re focusing on. Then I guide them through the “seven+ minute process” and I hold the space for them to release whatever emotions arise as they go through the process. For questions or a facilitated session, please email jemerends@gmail. com. Gratitude © Jayna Simpson — www.paintedplanet.org

by Nicolette Groeneveld The concept of self-love always felt ambiguous to me. People would say: “Just treat yourself the way you would treat a loved one” or “Take good care of yourself.” I did the best I could with that, but somehow it never left me feeling whole; rather I remained on a crusade to “fix” myself - endlessly taking courses, reading self-help books, trying different healing modalities and looking for love outside myself.

Over the past thirty years, Nicolette Groeneveld has worked as a teacher and a home education facilitator, and she helped to open and run an “unschooling” democratic school. She is also a writer and a public speaker. Her main passion has always been her spiritual growth and she has had sessions in and studied countless modalities. Her favourites are The Journey, animal communication, the PAX material (understanding men/women), and the teachings of Matt Kahn. Her strong intuitive abilities and the well of information she has collected over the years are her primary tools in working with others. Note: This information is for educational purposes only. Transformation through self-acceptance “If you do not let yourself be the way that you are, your body cannot function. The same is true for the emotions. The only way you can be who you are is through surrender and selfacceptance.” Marion Rosen Rosen Method Bodywork practitioners understand that when they are touching the body they are touching the mind and when they are speaking to the mind, they are speaking to the body. In this way Rosen Method Bodywork practitioners use gentle responsive touch and words to meet areas of chronic non-conscious holding in the body and connect with aspects of the mind that have been long forgotten. Through making contact with tight muscles that are limiting breath and aliveness, the practitioner is inviting the clients to drop into their body awareness more and experience themselves at that moment. The practitioner does not seek to fix or manipulate the holding; this would not invite self-awareness. Rather the practitioner supports and meets the holding in a way that the client is able to feel their own barrier to relaxation and well-being. Self-acceptance, the ability to allow and accept yourself exactly where you are in the moment, is a crucial first step in shifting any long held physical/psychological pattern. The contact between the practitioner and the client reminds the muscles that they are holding and simultaneously reminds them of the possibility of relaxing. The practitioner follows the client’s process continuing to invite awareness and relaxation. As the client begins to allow their barriers to be in their awareness they begin to experience more of themselves in the present moment. Then it becomes possible for the body/mind to differentiate between the old pattern of holding once needed for protection, from the new possibility of relaxation in the current moment where protection is no longer necessary or desired. Now a shift can occur as the client experiences a new level of relaxation and surrender which then allows them the possibility of experiencing more of their authentic self while also validating their past experience. Feelings arise naturally and can be released. The Rosen Method Bodywork practitioner is a mid-wife for this process, following, tracking and validating the client as they embrace more of their true selves. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

My clients are often surprised at the feelings and experiences that emerge into their awareness. After a session clients report feeling more relaxed, more grounded and different in their bodies. Often they report feeling more space or ease inside. There is more breath coming into the body and with less effort than before. As sessions progress with a client I often hear how they make changes in their life that they weren’t able to before, or meet relationships and circumstances differently than before. The well-being and spaciousness that accompany the authentic self begin to emerge, replacing the closed off, habit ridden, protected self. Broader ranges of experience become accessible when unconscious barriers are brought into self-awareness.

by Cinnamon Cranston Certified Rosen Method Bodywork Practitioner

In my own personal experience of receiving this work, allowing myself to really experience the barriers I had created (in order to not feel my pain) was absolutely crucial and incredibly profound. Surrendering to what I was experiencing in the moment instead of trying push past it in order to make myself “better” was, for me, the real breakthrough of this work; nothing else did this for me.

To accept myself for whom I was in that particular moment was the difference between being fully alive and being stuck in my old habits. Self-acceptance allowed me to connect with my deeper, true emotions, the ones I had to repress, and it also allowed the possibility for the real me to emerge from the shell of protection I had buried it behind. Gemstone helpers for stressful times On the evening of September 30, my 92-year-old father slipped away into the world of Spirit. As I sat by his bedside, my left hand soothingly rolled a pink mangano calcite egg as though it was a devoted prayer bead. This lovely soft stone taught me how to love, forgive and let go. During those long days and nights before my Dad’s passing, I recalled sweet memories of the one passion we both shared. When I was young, my Mom and Dad were rock hounds. In our basement the rock tumbler was constantly churning. To my young eyes, it seemed that this machine was a miracle worker… transforming dull rough rocks into treasures of beauty. My love of gemstones has never wavered. I’ve had the great honor of studying with gemstone masters from around the world. More recently, as I’ve made the commitment to teach the “Crystalline Gemstone Therapist Program” at Northern Star College, the gemstones have been visiting me and teaching me each night through my dreams. We’ve all witnessed what seems like an escalation of stress in the world today. Even though many of my clients meditate daily, still, they’ve not been immune to this ramped up intensity. Unlike us, gemstones continually vibrate in a harmonious and predictable manner despite outer circumstances. This is why they are such powerful medicine helpers for these times. Anxiety manifests differently for each of us. If your stress shows up as physical pain or reoccurring accidents, try working with the following gemstones. Black onyx helps us to release stressful energy from our bodies and stay grounded and present. Amethyst is amazing for calming the nervous system and easing physical pain. Moonstone and carnelian have an impressive track record in assisting with hormonal issues. Green tourmaline gives a powerful boost of energy when we’re feeling physically exhausted. Leopardskin jasper attracts specific helpers who can assist us in making positive and healing changes in our life.

Aquamarine has a lovely, watery energy that guides us to let go and move with the natural flow, to stop resisting the changes that are unfolding. Citrine unwinds stressful energy and renews our optimism for life. If you experience emotional stress, pink gemstones are often the ones to choose. Rhodonite helps us to release the emotional pressures that are bogging us down. It’s especially helpful when our emotions are feeling intense and out of control. Rose quartz, morganite, kunzite, lepidolite, scolecite, lithium quartz and pink mangano calcite are all extremely nurturing and soothing gems for our emotional body.

For stress that is causing you to worry and experience mental fatique, blue stones are often very effective. These are some of my favorites for calming the mind: blue lace agate, lapis lazuli, dumortierite, blue sapphire, sodalite, blue chalcedony, celestite (a wonderful stone for insomnia) and larimar. Thirty years ago I studied gemstone medicine with Marcel Vogel. He was an inventor and research scientist with IBM, and he brought this same genius to his work with healing gemstones. Marcel stated that crystals, light and sound are the medicine of the future. I believe that future is NOW. The gemstones that my parents collected have now been passed on to my generation. Through the major transitions that life and time brings, the energy of these crystalline helpers only grows stronger. This place, this time, wherever you are – the gemstones are vibrating their healing energy for you. Like the pink mangano calcite that soothes my spirit, you will be amazed by how much joy and peace they bring.

Sometimes stress can cause us to numb out through destructive habits, and in those cases, the following gems are wonderful healing allies. Amethyst calms the adrenals and nervous system, helping us to make wiser choices.

Drink to your health The amount of water in the human body ranges from 50 75% so it makes good sense that we consume the highest quality of water that we possibly can. Unfortunately, what comes out of our taps is often seriously compromised. Even the cleanest water in our taps contains pesticides, heavy metals, fluoride, chloramines, chlorine and an increasingly alarming amount of pharmaceutical residues, all of which can compromise our health and result in unpleasant chemical tastes and odours. Water purifiers and ionizers have been around for decades and many people have used these technologies to drink better water without having to rely on bottled water, which is not only costly, but puts a serious burden on our landfill sites. Drinking clean, alkaline and H2 enriched water can provide many health benefits and helps provide relief for ailments such as fibromyalgia, arthritis, psoriasis and even asthma. Minucha Colborne is an 83 year old woman with a history of respiratory challenges. After 15 years of working as a professional potter, she found that the clay and glazes compromised her lungs and left her literally breathless. “Eventually, one day I walked out of the studio and found I could not catch my breath,” says Colborne. “I was really in bad shape.” After consulting her doctor, who wanted to put her on steroids, Colborne chose a different route and temporarily went on a raw food diet eating only raw vegetables and growing trays of wheatgrass and buckwheat sprouts. “The alkaline diet opened up my lungs immediately. I’ve maintained an alkaline way of life, ever since.”

Best Water is a family owned company located in the heart of Edmonton – their name says it all. They have been selling water purification systems and ionizers for over 25 years. “We are proud of our water experts that keep our company on the cutting edge of water technologies,” says owner Mike Crowley. “We love keeping our customers informed so that they enjoy the best and cleanest drinking water possible.” Colborne is one of those water experts and she points to how the water revolution is now all about the new H2 ionizers such as the UltraStream by Alkway. “It’s not only about what UltraStream takes out,” she says explaining that the system has eight layers of filtration ensuring ultimate water purity, “it’s about what it puts in that makes it so powerful – hydrogen infused water providing the body with powerful ‘on tap’ antioxidant negative ions in every glass.” Antioxidants, as we know, are a powerful cleanser for the body. The H2 ionizers also help to alkalize the body and that provides good results for a number of conditions including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Tea For Two © Maria Pace-Wynters

by Julia Abelsohn

Now science has jumped on board and through The Molecular Hydrogen Foundation there are many studies that verify the positive anecdotal evidence about the benefits of drinking H2 infused water that many users continue to report. “Science is now behind it on such a high level touting the many benefits that people are getting,” says Colbourne. “Even my eyesight has improved.” Anti-aging is just one of the benefits of drinking H2 ionized water and if Colbourne is any example, we are definitely convinced. Julia Abelsohn is a health writer in Edmonton with over 25 years of experience. She can be reached at: jkabelsohn@gmail.com For more information: www.waterionizer.org Note: This information is for educational purposes only. A big part of that alkaline way of life is drinking alkaline water that she gets from water ionizers. She was so convinced of their value that Colborne started working for Best Water, the Canadian company that sells the water purification systems and after a decade on the job continues to be exuberantly enthusiastic about drinking purified alkaline water. “I couldn’t sell it, if I didn’t personally benefit from it and think it was a good thing,” she says. www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Woman’s path of Shamanism by Sarah Salter-Kelly Spiritual Healer Something happens women gather.

the cycles of the day, hold teachings within them that are essential for our self-understanding and soul healing. when

In the last 100 years there has been a wave of energy rising... A wave bearing the hearts of generations of women as the tides have changed from a culture of patriarchal reverence to one remembering the Sacred Feminine. Slowly, piece by piece, scrap-by-scrap and bitby-bit, the spiritual components that define womanhood as holy, purposeful and profound are creating a new form in the tapestry of our collective consciousness. And we are HUNGRY! Our appetite is infinite as we taste the wonders of our spiritual experiences and gather tools that guide us in discovering how to engage with ourselves, our partners, our families and our communities. We are truly dreaming a new world into being. Many experience this as a calling - a call from the Divine Mother to change the standards of whom we SHOULD be and to allow for the grace of who we ARE to come forth. It’s a calling to allow for raw honesty in its chaos and authenticity to become the standard by which we raise our daughters. It is a call of sustainability… to forgo the belief system that tells us there is never enough: enough time, enough money, enough nourishment or enough joy. It is a call of service… to use the resources and gifts in which we have been entrusted to make a difference on this planet. It is an act of prayer. As Medicine Women we gather our words to give voice to the heart of humanity, the heart of our beings... We make time to listen to the answers and learn how to read how they show up, through omens and symbols. We feel the elements within ourselves - the waters of our womb, the fires of our heart/hearth, the breath of our song and the earth of our bodies – and thus know our bodies to be sacred too.

It is a call for community… to trust that we can be SEEN, supported and nourished amongst sisters, through the container of sacred space. It is within the dynamic of a circle we can grow and satiate our need to experience belonging. The land calls us... to walk upon her, gather plants, grow food, sit around the fire and listen to the silence. We remember ourselves in these moments. “Woman’s Path to Shamanism” is my answer to this call. To create a forum in which women can grow the soul seed of who they are becoming and honor the authenticity of their own voice. This journey shall change your life. It will be difficult and graceful, intimate and bold, sloppy and raw. It shall challenge the parameters of who you think you are so you may embody your highest self. Through the circle of sisterhood, initiation, ritual and ceremony we will delve into the mystery of our beings, shedding stories of limitation, selfsabotage and compromise and getting real about being seen and trusting in our ability to co-create our reality in the now. We meet four times throughout the year, over a four-day weekend, starting March 23, 2017. There are up to 13 of you who will embark on this journey with me over the next year. Contact me today, if you are one of them. Sarah specializes in using shamanic ceremony and process to create spirit medicine for individual healing, sacred travel or group trainings/ retreats. It is a call to align with our nature. The cycles of life are within us - birth, life, death, void and renewal - also seen as Mother, Maiden and Crone and they are found in our monthly cycles. Creating Sacred Stones amulets by Connie Brisson My story is really an “old” story. Long ago, the initial reason that ancient cultures valued and began wearing gemstones was that they could feel and see the powerful, healing and transformative energies of Mother Earth’s crystals and gems. They noticed that the energies of certain gemstones could help them with different things - turquoise brought power, luck and protection, citrine attracted more abundance, carnelian instilled courage and dispelled fear, garnet attracted victory and amber absorbed toxins, to just name a few.

With Skye’s extensive knowledge of crystals and gemstones and her channeling abilities, she determined the mystical qualities each bracelet had, who it was meant to help, how it should be cleansed, the precise blessing process and who the powerful mystical Spirit Helper (goddess, god, angel, fairy, power animal) would be for the gemstone combination I had created. Then I bought every book I could find on the gemstones and the different Spirit Helpers and, with all of this information woven together, I created detailed keepsake cards for each bracelet which describe the type of person the amulet can help, its mystical and healing qualities, and the complete cleansing process for the bracelet.

These gemstones became powerful helpers/amulets and, in an attempt to keep the gemstones close to their bodies, our ancestors came up with inventive ways of carrying them, which eventually became the templates of necklaces, bracelets, rings and other jewelry.

My love for crystals and gemstones began about 20 years ago. I bought a gemstone bracelet from one of my teachers, Skye MacLachlan, and I just loved it. In fact, I wanted many, many more. So I went to a local gemstone store (The Rock & Gem Shop) and bought a few different strands of beads, based on their metaphysical healing properties and what I was attracted to. I made some beautiful bracelets and brought them all to an appointment I had with Skye, excited to hear her intuitive insights on each one. And as they say, the rest is history. Once I heard the amazing, different ways that each bracelet could help others change, I knew that making these bracelets was part of my purpose.

I didn’t wear a lot of gemstone jewelry before, but as I’ve come to know more about the world of Spirit, vibrations and the Law of Attraction, my love and appreciation for the power of crystals and gemstones has grown tremendously. Not only are they physically beautiful, once you understand what they do for you on a vibrational and spiritual level, you can see why everyone loves gemstone jewelry (whether they understand the deeper, subconscious, healing aspects or not). We are always attracted (unconsciously and consciously) to the things that can help us grow.

As time went by and I became more familiar with the gemstones, their energies and also with the Spirit Helpers’ energies and messages, I began to add that new information to the cards. As I’ve grown and evolved, so have the bracelets, their meanings and their energies. After beading each of the amulets, I follow a certain process - a blessing - in order to invite the higher vibration of the gemstones and also the Spirit Helpers involved. Every amulet I make goes through a three day cleansing that contains all the elements (earth, water, air, fire), followed by a nine day “blessing” process www.MosaicMagazine.ca

where I dedicate the amulets to the Spirit Helpers involved in a ritual Skye taught me, which I’ve added onto over the years as I have worked with these magical energies. As the Sacred Stones jewelry emits its vibrational energy, your old vibrational patterns and beliefs will rise up and rub against the new vibrations, qualities and energies that the gemstones and Spirit Helpers are consistently radiating to you (as you are meant to wear the amulet constantly). While these times of change can be uncomfortable, rest assured that you are attracting the exact experiences that will help you make the self discoveries you need to free and transform yourself. When you combine the metaphysical energy of these amulets with the mental energy of your focused attention and intention, you increase and strengthen your potential to make incredible transformative changes. Your intention, the reason you are wearing the amulet, mixes with and amplifies the energies aligned with the bracelets. By becoming aware of your thoughts, habits and patterns you can create your life from a conscious place. Where there is a new awareness, change will inevitably follow. In Feng Shui, when something breaks, it means that it has energetically fulfilled its purpose for you. I found that magical and so I thought, why not deliberately intend that purpose right into these amulets and ask Spirit to give the amulet wearer a message (a “breakthrough”) at that moment the amulet breaks? So I really love that when the Sacred Stones bracelets break (absorbing and releasing whatever you needed to let go of), it actually represents a powerful “breakthrough” for you. I know there is some irony in that, as usually when jewelry breaks it is a loss. But in this case, when the amulet breaks, it is a celebration - a sign that you’ve done some deep work and have made a significant breakthrough in your progress and journey. Because there is an intended message from the Spirit world when the amulet breaks, you need to stop in that moment and recognize what the message is for you. I was speaking to someone who has had many Sacred Stones bracelets and she told me a story of how her Ganesh bracelet broke on the last day of her completion of years of yoga training. (The Ganesh bracelet is all about www.MosaicMagazine.ca

helping people overcome obstacles and bringing their inner gifts and talents out into the world. What a confirmation!) In the meanwhile she was still wearing the Mary Magdalene bracelet (for three years) and was excited to see what personal breakthrough its breaking would mark for her. I’ve had bracelets that have lasted for years and one that only lasted a week (but the message that came when that bracelet broke was immense and intense). Each bracelet is carefully constructed so it’s important that you know that the breakage isn’t a workmanship issue. It’s a sign of a “breakthrough” and there is always a message from the Spirit world attached to when it breaks for you. Just a few weeks ago, I had a difficult talk with a family member after a long period of disconnection. When it was over, I thought about another family member and whether I should reach out to her (and, to my utter amazement) a Sacred Stones bracelet I was wearing (for six months) actually just undid and fell off my wrist onto my foot. When I felt something fall on my foot, I looked down and saw it was my bracelet. When I picked it up, I realized that it had NOT broken but had actually just magically unclasped itself somehow (and was otherwise perfect). I’ve never had that happen to me before and I was astounded. It’s always so amazing to me the way that Spirit gives us messages and these bracelets are purposely designed to do just that. While no one ever wants jewelry to break, I think that the beauty of when the amulet breaks is that it forces you to “freeze frame” a moment in your life to look/hear/feel a message that you might otherwise overlook. At that moment, there is a message that Spirit wants you to “get” and the bracelet helps you get it. That is the beauty of wearing an amulet that has a purpose, that has a higher vibration. The gift isn’t just in its physical beauty - but in its deeper spiritual beauty too. It’s a reminder that you are a beautiful work in progress and you’re never alone. Self-realization, success and suffering by Catherine Potter Astrologer and Hypnotherapist This article builds on a previous one I wrote on self-realization in the autumn issue of Mosaic. The definition for self-realization is the: “fulfillment of one’s potential” which translates to a desire to know more of who we are.

In traditional esoteric teachings most of the examples of self-realized beings were religious figures such as prophets, monks, saints, etc. Yet not everyone who seeks self-realization is meant for a monastic or religious path. As we reframe ancient esoteric teachings, making them relevant for current day, anyone who lives (not just talks about) a life that supports holistic principles* certainly would be on the path towards self-realization. This might be the parent, artist, world leader or baker who are living teachers for the above principles.

Eventually as we continue to expand in positive ways we experience something called personality/soul fusion. Our essential nature (sometimes referred to as soul) and our personality fuse and act as one.

Imagine opening up the door to being a holistic, creative, thinker calmly or boldly living your best life. Why wouldn’t we whole heartedly reach for this?

Like a cup, as we expand, we fill up with our soul’s energy which allows for a more holistic, inclusive, creative, accepting and purpose filled life.

Herein lies a dilemma for most of us. To know more of who we are means letting go of our stories and the successes and suffering associated with them. It doesn’t mean we have to change occupations, locations or relationships but it does mean we have to let our perception of ourselves and how we engage the world grow. In other words, our outer world could look the same but our inner frame of reference and the juice we run our world with would be different.

The Mask © Oksana Zhelisko — www.zheliskoart.com

It is scary to retire our stories so new ones can emerge. Our ego (sense of self) likes our stories; it is how we define who we are, make connections and get our needs met. We will all experience painful and joyful events at different points in our life and to different degrees. When we are in a painful situation

or when we go through the process of healing, it is important to be fully engaged with that process. Trying to think ourselves into a different reality doesn’t work. There will be a point however when there is an opportunity to move forward. Too often that doesn’t happen because we stay locked into the story of the experience. We hold onto pain and begin to suffer. I once had someone ask me if I thought pain was part of life and I would have to say yes. We will all experience someone close to us die, lose a position, possession or health. We will all experience pain but the holding on to it causes suffering and limited growth. Holding on also limits our ability to see and believe in the potential for more. Part of the problem is that we identify with each other’s suffering; it gives us a sense of belonging and sometimes without being aware of it we use it (the story of our pain) to have our needs met. Holding onto past pain or glory limits us. Our true nature is to grow. When we get locked into our stories of suffering** or successes, growth is inhibited and over time we begin to experience mental, emotional and physical stagnation. What also gets impacted is our ability to imagine or reach for an expanded version of our self. It takes courage and imagination to dream into being new personal and collective archetypes that embody holistic principles. When we do, pathways open for us, our children and the world. The first step is letting go so we can experience a rich, fertile, empty space for something new to grow in. *Principles that embrace justice and fairness for all; inclusivity, compassion and interconnection (the understanding that all life forms are connected and in relationship with each other and that to harm one harms all). **Getting locked in is different than the movement that occurs when, as part of our healing process, we share our pain and story. Life changes with The Tower I clearly remember my first paying tarot client. She walked into my consultation room fuming with anger. With very colorful language, she demanded: “You better not be like the last f***ing psychic who told me that God never gives us more than we can handle!” I was so frightened by her that I could barely breathe. Without thinking I began to shuffle the cards and one card leapt from the deck, flew across the table and wacked her in the forehead. I thought I would die. My eyes stared in stunned silence as the card bounced off her forehead, did a somersault through the air and landed face up. It was the Tower card. In a trembling voice I described the card to her. I told her that old structures that represented security were suddenly crumbling and falling… she was facing unexpected life changes. I explained that even though this was obviously a difficult time, the wise part of her knew that this structure had become her prison. It was time for her to break free and leave the old behind. She sat in silence and stared at me. I wanted to run but kept talking. “It’s normal to feel totally off kilter and your nerves are probably frazzled – like the Tower, you’ve metaphorically been struck by lightning. Let yourself have a time of transition and one day soon a new door will open.” With those words she stood up, threw some money on the table and silently walked out. I ran behind her and locked the door. I closed the blinds. I laid on the carpet, listened to my heart pounding and wondered if I was having a heart attack. I berated myself for ever thinking I could read tarot cards.

SPIRITUAL: The Tower comes as a jolt of awareness that changes the world as you know it. It can bring surges of kundalini energy and the unexpected awakening of your intuition. It’s important to stay balanced and grounded during this time. HEALTH: An unexpected health crisis, accident or surgery might be required. Or, you may find an alternative healing therapy that dramatically improves your health immediately. FINANCES: You could be shocked by winning the big lotto, getting a huge raise or unexpected promotion. Or, it could represent sudden money problems. RELATIONSHIPS: In the most unexpected way you meet the man/woman of your dreams. Or, your partner makes a shocking revelation that rocks your world.

WORK: Someone calls you and offers you the most amazing job. Or, without any warning, you’re laid off or fired. The Tower is never subtle. When it crashes into your life, it brings amazingly good news or shockingly bad news. However it shows up, give yourself time to rest and recover; find your center and then wait. At some point the Tower always brings gifts. Even though it is shocking when the Tower comes crashing down, it’s an old structure (way of being) that no longer serves you and if you can remember that, before you know it you will be stepping into the excitement of something new and better.

What feels like the end of the world today will bring a breakthrough towards freedom tomorrow. Like the phoenix, you will rise again! Skye has specialized in Tarot for over 30 years. Today, I can look back on that morning and realize that my client was definitely dealing with the unpredictable and overwhelming energy of the Tower. More surprising, so was I. It took a full month of listening to calming cello music before I would take the courageous step of seeing another tarot client. Here are a few ways that the Tower’s “wake-up call” might appear in your life…

Painting my love of all things spiritual

The Messenger © Jayna Simpson

Through the years I’ve also developed a keen interest in spirituality and healing. In addition to being a self taught artist, I have fervently studied guided meditation, Reiki and intuitive development. I have discovered that as I open myself to this new philosophy, my art has also begun to expand and flourish. Spirituality and healing have become a huge inspiration for my creative process, to the point of being vital. Combining my joy for creating and love of all things spiritual, painting is my distinctive way of connecting to Source energy, and further more to my clients. There is a lot of symbolism in the subject matter I choose to express. Each color is intentionally chakra related and I experience each painting as a meditation and healing process. The less I ‘think’ as I paint and the more that I just allow my hand to freely move the brush over the canvas, I find myself receiving healing messages. For instance, if I were painting a goddess portrait and her eyes came out large with a soft gaze and the mouth small and closed, I would recognize that I was struggling with a life lesson to keep my eyes open, be observant and speak less. Other times if I notice a painting has a lot of bold greens and blues (blue being throat chakra and green being heart chakra) it encourages me to speak out from my heart. If I am experiencing challenges in which I need to learn to be expressive and outspoken, my painting may be primarily bright, or in contrast it www.MosaicMagazine.ca

Over time I’ve noticed that people are often drawn to a painting that holds an energy similar to current issues they are personally working through. Most times I can do an entire intuitive reading on a person based on which of my paintings they are most drawn to, and many of my clients, who often become dear friends, have expressed how they continually experience healing through the paintings I’ve done for them. I love how my art helps me to connect with people on such a deep level.

Niagara Falls area and Toronto by Connie Brisson I love to travel. There are only a few other things that make me happier. I think there is this magical thing that happens when you travel. You see a different world than the one you are used to and it makes you realize that your current reality is often small. When you see how big the world is, a part of you (that has been sleeping) awakens to possibilities previously unimagined. I especially feel this when I’m in countries that are so different from ours, but this year I had some of those AHA moments right here in Canada. With our economy being the way it is, my darling husband wisely said that we should embrace our Canadian dollar this year and travel within Canada. So in August we went on a little trip to Toronto and the Niagara Falls area. Although Marcel had worked in that region many years ago, Gabbey and I had never been there – except for in the airport on our way to other places. We began our adventure by getting a rental car near the airport and then driving (about an hour or so) to Niagara Falls, the world famous set of three large waterfalls on the Niagara River. We arrived to discover the town wasn’t at all what we were expecting. I thought it would be a magical little village, but it had a different energy than that.

and it cost me $20 less (unbelievable)! Those Falls and that rainbow were costly, but just that once, it was worth it to eat that chicken from that blessed vantage point. After googling many hotel options, I had decided on a room at the Old Stone Inn (www.oldstoneinnhotel.com). Set in a former flour mill dating from 1904, this stoneand-wood boutique hotel, with a modern annex, was a short walk from all the attractions at Niagara Falls. We had one of its loveliest rooms (sort of a suite) and I would recommend it to anyone. Of course, we had to go on the Hornblower Niagara boat cruise (a 700-passenger catamaran) which brings you as close as possible to the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and into the heart of the famous Horseshoe Falls. Every second, 2,832 cubic metres of water drops over the fall’s edge, crashing down 52 metres onto the rocks below, creating a water spray so intense that you’ll never forget it. We got totally soaking wet (they do provide plastic covers but they really don’t help). However, it didn’t matter because what an incredible experience that was! But the highlight of Niagara Falls for us was being a part of its light show at night. There is a dinner package available where you also go on an Illumination Tower tour (the building where they change the colors of the giant spotlights that shine on Niagara Falls). You tour the facility, hear about its history and then actually change the colors of the lights yourself - watching in real time as Horseshoe Falls reflects the hues you have chosen. Gabbey and I got to pick which colors illuminated the Falls (for 15- 20 minutes as there were only a few of us on the tour) and it was something we will never forget! Many thanks to our guide there, Gene. The next day we drove about 30 minutes away to the town, Niagaraon-the-Lake, and I immediately fell in love with it! It really was like a quaint little old village that one might find in another time and place. Here was the magical place I had been hoping for.

Niagara Falls

We love going to unique restaurants, but after driving around we decided on the The Keg restaurant, located on the ninth floor of the Embassy Suites Hotel. And I’m not exaggerating when I say that we all gasped when we saw the view from our table – the Niagara Falls were right there, with an amazing rainbow right over it! It was honestly breathtaking. But I’ll also tell you that I ordered the same chicken dish in Edmonton two weeks earlier

Mosaic Magazine — Winter 2016

This historic town was the first capital of Upper Canada in 1792. The main Niagara-on-the-Lake street is full of beautiful little antique and specialty shops (in wellpreserved buildings dating back to 1817), restaurants, flowers everywhere and it all just radiates old world charm. As we strolled along, Gabbey and I came upon an www.MosaicMagazine.ca

unusual dress shop (Valle Verde, 55 Queen Street) that has everything from linen outfits to one of kind statement pieces. Many dresses were replicas of fine gowns from earlier eras, like the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Gabbey tried on a saloon gown of brown lace that looked like it came from the old West. The owner said her gowns were popular for theme weddings or celebrations. This shop was one of the highlights of this town for me and I would definitely go back there if I was looking for something wonderfully unique. Niagara is also home to more than 70 award winning wineries and most offer tours, allowing visitors an opportunity to taste, enjoy and learn about the local wines. We decided to go to Konzelmann Estate Winery (www.konzelmann.ca) to experience a wine tour. It was interesting and fun to taste different wines and we were especially surprised by their Peach Wine (which has won them many awards). The next day we drove back to Toronto, and we stayed in one of the loveliest rooms we’ve ever had anywhere, at the Omni King Edward Hotel, right downtown, (www.omnihotels.com/ hotels/toronto-kingedward). We even indulged in a traditional English afternoon tea at the hotel (with fancy little savory finger sandwiches, scones and numerous desserts) before Marcel and Gabbey went to a Toronto Blue Jays game (they won the Minnesota Twins that night). The day after, we had mussels for lunch at Chase Fish & Oyster in the historic Distillery District. That area (dating back to 1832), contained the Gooderham & Worts Distillery which eventually became the largest distillery in the British Empire! Today it’s a pedestrian only, cobblestone street village with many trendy restaurants and shops.

Later, while Marcel and Gabbey went to the Hockey Hall of Fame and then the CN Tower, I visited four different mind/body/spirit stores in Toronto. Whenever I’m in a new town or city, I always endeavor to visit any mind/ body/spirit stores possible because I love to see what other places/stores have. The stores I visited included Wonderworks (25 Baldwin St.), House of Energy (145 Augusta Ave.), The Rock Store (602 Markham St.) and Alternative Thinking (758 Bathurst St.). During my adventure that day I walked (to my absolute delight, but entirely by accident) through the colorful neighborhood of Kensington that is famous for its market. But, because it was the last Sunday of the month, I was blessed to enjoy a street festival that took up many street blocks (musicians and street entertainers everywhere). It was there that I came upon a Portuguese restaurant, Amadeu’s (182-4 Augusta Avenue). I grabbed a business card and then, later that evening, we took a cab back there. We were so lucky to quickly get a table on the deck outside, where a three piece band was playing and beautiful lights were strung all across the deck (like in movies). It felt like we were definitely somewhere else in the world, somewhere special, and that it was in Toronto made us appreciate the many treasures Canada holds. Gabbey and I ordered “Pork & Clams” and Marcel had a traditional cod dish; it was all delicious. I’ve been to many astonishing places around the world, and I have to tell you that I love Toronto and the Niagara Falls area just as much as I love any of those other glamorous spots. Now we are eager to travel to the other eastern provinces and discover their beauty. Ahh… but that will have to wait for another year.

Con Amore

(Italian) With heart and soul

Clearing the energy in our homes Since I was a young girl, I knew that if I changed the furniture around in my bedroom, my life would somehow change – usually for the better. I didn’t know how it worked; I just knew that it did. I was around 32-years-old when I met Skye MacLachlan. A co-worker had recommended her as a tarot reader after I was confounded about a difficult family dynamic, looking for any extra insight. And while Skye did help me immensely with tarot, what captivated me was something else she did – Feng Shui. Since then, Skye and I have done Feng Shui on a few of my homes and during each one, I’ve learned more and more, and have been humbled. What I know for sure is that Feng Shui is complicated and I will probably never understand it the way I want to, but that doesn’t mean that I ever underestimate its wisdom. Last year was a very tough year for us. After years of working constantly, my husband was laid off. At first, I was all chipper about it, thinking he would get another job quickly. But month after month, I started to lose faith. We had a big holiday planned in August and as the months went by, I wondered if we should go. But then, at some point, it became apparent it would cost more to cancel it, and so we went. Then, I told myself that when we got home from the holiday, he would get a job offering, but nothing came. At that point, he had not worked for five months. I see Skye a lot, learning many new things from her constantly, and when I told her about my growing anxiety over our finances (and a really disturbing dream I had just had), she reflected on both. Then she gave me a Feng Shui cure to clear negative energy from my home. I don’t have the space to describe it here because it is detailed, so I will have the procedure on my website so you can follow it if you want. Go to www.mosaicmagazine.ca and click on THIS ISSUE, “Clear Your Home.” Her Feng Shui cure was not a simple process. It involved thoroughly cleaning my house, vacuuming my house and then mopping my house with salt water. It took me three days! My house is pretty clean but it took me a whole day to vacuum my house (top to bottom) and when my vacuum cleaner (the power hose) stopped working about half way through (so I had to do the rest of the house with the broom hose), I was livid. It wasn’t until later, when

Skye explained that meant there was something big energetically that the vacuum had picked up (so much so that it actually blocked my power hose from working), that I understood how essential this whole cleansing process really was in order for us to move forward. The next day I spent hours mopping my entire home, in a very particular way, including all the inlaid rugs in our home. But when I was done, I was ecstatic. I felt like my house was a shrine and I could feel the immensely clear energy that seemed to be bouncing through it.

Then, out of nowhere, I remembered that I needed to clean out the trunk of my vehicle from the last Mosaic Mystic Meeting that had happened almost a month earlier. I went through a container of things I have for the meeting and I found a gift bag there that I had not known about. When I opened it, I gasped.

There was this beautiful chi enhancer Skye had made as a gift for an earlier Mystic Meeting, made all in clear quartz with a beautiful stone cut into Kuan Yin. There was a note attached that told me that (whoever had won this Kuan Yin in an earlier Mystic Meeting) was now gifting it to me because I had commented on how beautiful it was. So thank you, sincerely, to whoever you are, because you did not sign the card and I do not keep track of who wins prizes at our Mystic Meetings. When I read your note, and had the Kuan Yin chi enhancer in my hand, I got all weepy. It was like Spirit was acknowledging me for doing the hard work of clearing the negative energy from my space (with all the vacuuming and mopping) and then assuring me of good things to come by gifting me so unexpectedly with the more calm and loving energy of Kuan Yin for my home. I immediately felt it was a sign that our financial trials were over. And indeed they were, as within the next week my husband got a job offer and life became easier once again. My example is about a job in difficult economic times, but it was such a powerful process that I want to encourage anyone going through any kind of difficulty, to take the time to try this clearing process. When we energetically clear things, we make room (much like decluttering physical things) for new (better) things to come into our lives. When we clear our spaces (inside and outside of us), we open ourselves to the goodness and abundance of the Universe. Because, pinch me, I really do believe that we can have it all... www.MosaicMagazine.ca
