It’s said that every inch of Einstein’s desk was covered in papers, and Paul Smith’s office, which I saw in an exhibition, was also full of books, toys and miscellaneous items. The same goes for Steve Jobs and Mark Twain’s working environments. Some argue that a messy desk equals a creative mind, while I think the state of the desk may say more about the owners’ nonlinear thinking. People whose desks are clean and tidy are usually scrupulous and methodical, determined to solve every problem as soon as possible. But sometimes you need to think outside the box, to change perspective and come up with more alternatives, instead of sticking to the most straightforward and efficient method. I understand the need and reason for some industries and positions to keep their desks clean, however if the nature of your job is creative, you might be able to get a creative boost from an array of paraphernalia on your desk. Even the sense of freedom is attractive. A humanised environment can counter the suppressed and cold atmosphere in most typical offices. Of course, order should come out of chaos, but the most significant part never fades away. Similarly, in the cinematic world, movies, whose messages are explicitly expressed, usually won’t have a niche in the temple of fame. On the contrary, the harder it is to tease out the characters, relationships or to tell black from white, the more intriguing and thoughtprovoking the movie is. Great works require more time to appreciate them properly. In this volume, most of the featured auteurs’ works cannot be easily perceived. We have the king of cult films, David Lynch, New Wave director Agnes Varda, famous Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev, and the talented and good-looking Xavier Dolan. But beyond these seemingly chaotic stories, there remains an eternal beauty worth ruminating over. (Translated by VW&KC)

傳聞愛因斯坦的桌子是一片混亂,坊間流傳 的照片裡,Steve Jobs 和馬克吐溫的也一樣 凌亂。我看過 Paul Smith 展覽裡的辦公室也 是放滿書本玩具跟物件。 有人說桌子混亂的人比較有創意,我倒 想那可能反映出一樣非線性的思考模式。辦 公桌整潔的人大抵較喜歡一板一眼處理事 情,並有種必須儘早解決一切的決心。但也 許,有時所謂 out of the Box 的 solution 又或 是創意就是要你多走一些路,換個方向去思 考其他可能性,而不是安於尋找最想當然又 或便捷的處理方法。我相信某些行業或某些 職責的人桌面一絲不紊是絕對有其原因及 需要,但假如屬於創作型的崗位的話,琳瑯 滿目的桌面或辦公室可能會為那主人帶來 一些靈感,一點衝擊。也許只不過就是那份 不拘小節的從容自在。以一個較人性化的環 境,去抗衡一般辦公室那冰冷壓抑的 clinical 感覺。 當然,亂中必須有序。但真正重要的東 西是永遠不會失去的。同樣地,在電影的世 界中,直白畫公仔畫出腸的電影不會令人念 念不忘。往往光影裡愈糾纏愈複雜的人物關 係、愈黑白難分的情景層次,才份外叫人回 味。有心人要花點心思才能真正體會的東西, 才是最美好的。 今期推介不少大師的作品都不是一眼 即明的易入口之作,如 Cult 片王大衛連治、 新浪潮導演 Agnes Varda、俄羅斯人氣導演
Andrey Zvyagintsev,又或又靚仔又有才華的 Xavier Dolan。但在那看似迂迴複雜的故事裡

我覺得電影是我的朋友,是忘年之交,或者
第一次見面、草橋結拜、或者是樓台會久別
是不會長大的朋友。大多數人走入電影世界
重逢的一幕,你會有種悲劇發生的預感。
都是因為希望被了解,所以導演要很懂得人
在《亂世情天》的結尾,火車載着很多
的情感和心理。在香港,我們屬於有電影陪

He is a three-time Oscar nominee and winner of the Palme d’Or, as well as a Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement. He is a director, screenwriter, producer, composer and photographer. He is David Lynch. His films are incredibly strange, but so is his life. Back in 1968, the 21-year-old Lynch, still a student then, married his first wife, thanks to an unexpected pregnancy. The pennypinching couple then moved into the menacing Philadelphia neighbourhood of Fairmount, where their house was burgled, and their car stolen after only 3 days. It was precisely this fullof-fear experience that contributed to his world of incredibly twisted minds, and inspired his first feature film, Eraserhead. 13/4 (FRI) 22:00 David Lynch’s debut feature film. To realise the project, Lynch delivered newspapers to fund the production that spanned 5 years. Its screenplay only had 21 pages, which presumably translated to 21 minutes according to industry standard, but the film turned out to be 89 minutes long. He spent almost a year alone on sound editing, which is one of the most surprising highlights of the film. It tells of story of Henry, living in a dystopian industrial wasteland, whose girlfriend gives birth to a deformed infant whom she leaves in his care, echoing Lynch’s own fear of fatherhood. The surrealist imagery and sexual undercurrent catches the audience’s imagination, and helped the film gain notoriety on the midnight movie circuit, where it became a cult classic.

THE INERASABLE ERASERHEAD Remembering David Lynch s Unforgettable Debut

A number of neuroses and concerns have clearly played into Eraserhead, while a variety of films and cinematic styles have informed its grotesque aesthetic. Not least is the theme of parenthood, or rather, the blind panic and abject confusion that cripples the protagonists following the arrival of their baby. The film’s opening sequence, which sees Henry floating in space, while a pustulating man pulls levers that launch grotesque spermatozoa into a yawning void, is clearly a metaphor for sex. Henry clearly loves Mary and enjoys their physical coupling, but doesn’t appear to adequately understand the consequences of their actions. As if, one might contend, their fate is being controlled by external forces or a third party. Once the baby arrives, it proves terrifying in every conceivable way. Henry’s home is suddenly invaded by a newly domesticated Mary, but also by a small mewling creature impossible to understand. It cries incessantly, it quickly becomes sick, it refuses food and doesn’t even appear to be human. These are all perfectly normal fears that manifest after the birth of a child. But through Lynch’s eyes, they become horrifying. Soon after Henry is left alone to care for the baby by himself, the greatest fear of any parent is soon realised. His incompetence, and lack of understanding, accidentally cause the death of his child. But this is after Mary is driven to leave them both, and Henry seeks solace in the arms of his attractive neighbour. Shot in stark black and white, Eraserhead’s visual style is strongly influenced by the German Expressionist movement of the 1930s. The films of Fritz Lang in particular strongly inform the bold areas of light and shadow that dominate the frame, as well as the dilapidated interiors, where oversized industrial fittings are juxtaposed with mouldy wooden structures.
As the more surreal and monstrous elements of the film take over, Eraserhead expresses a distrust for modified foods - specifically the “man-made” chickens spewing black puss over the dinner plates. The mysterious lady in the radiator, with her misshapen cheeks and haunting melodies, bridges the gap between the wartime musical halls and classic monster movies that proliferated across America during that same early period of the 20th century. After completing the film, Lynch submitted Eraserhead to the Cannes Film Festival. This time he was successful, but in later years, four of his films would screen in the Main Competition. In 1990, Wild at Heart won the festival’s most prestigious award, the Palme D’Or, and he would be named Best Director in 2001 for Mullholland Dr.. New York Film Festival also rejected this perculiar oddity from the unknown filmmaker, but Eraserhead was finally accepted into the Filmex film festival in Los Angeles, where it premiered in March 1977 to a reported audience of 25 people. This less than prestigious opening, however, was not the end of Eraserhead. The film found an unexpected audience on the midnight circuit. It played for a year at LA’s Cinema Village before enjoying an even longer unbroken run in New York and around the country. The film is now regarded as one of the quintessential midnight movies of the period, achieving cult classic status alongside the likes of El Topo, Pink Flamingos and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Impossible to explain but even harder to forget, Eraserhead was a triumphant calling card for one of America’s most unique filmmaking talents. “In heaven, everything is fine”, sings the Lady in the Radiator. The same seems less certain in the world of David Lynch, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Eraserhead, the first feature from American filmmaker David Lynch, is still considered by many to be one of his best. It recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary, but has lost none of its originality, or ability to shock. This is no mean feat considering the impact it has had on generations of artists and cinephiles alike, and the fact that Lynch has worked continuously since the film’s release. Nothing like Eraserhead existed before it, and - one suspects - nothing ever will again. A film that defies simple categorisation, Eraserhead is most commonly referred to as a horror film, albeit that abides by few of the conventions of that particular genre. Set in an unidentifiable industrial hellscape, the film focuses on a troubled and neurotic young man named Henry Spencer. He lives alone in a small, rundown apartment filled with dirt and compost. The window offers a view only of a brick wall, and strange noises emanate from the plumbing. Henry is not alone in this nightmarish, perhaps post-apocalyptic world. He has a girlfriend, Mary X, with whom he is expecting a baby. After one of the most uncomfortable family dinners in the history of cinema, Mary moves out of her parents’ house and in with Henry. She has had a baby, and it is fair to say there is something very wrong with it. Misshapen, limbless and bound in bandages, their grotesque offspring wails endlessly, and eventually Mary leaves. Left literally holding the baby, Henry struggles to care for his infant child, but his real problems are just beginning. Lynch created Eraserhead over a period of five years, from a script that ran just 21 pages. He has steadfastly refused to explain the meaning behind the film, leaving it open for audiences to interpret as they see fit. We know that Lynch divorced from his first wife, Peggy Lentz, during the film’s production, and would marry Mary Fisk, sister of production designer Jack Fisk, shortly after its release.

Agnes Varda is a French film director, born in Belgium. She was the first female director to receive an honorary Oscar, and the only woman in the French New Wave movement. Being 89 years old, Varda has gained close to a century of experience and wisdom, but her heart remains unwrinkled. Varda doesn’t care about fame and fortune. Her film FACES/ PLACES was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at this year's Academy Awards, but she skipped the Oscars luncheon, sending a cardboard cut-out of herself instead, which upstaged everyone at the event. Even though she is the oldest ever Oscar nominee, she is actually the most lively and adorable figure. “I’m impressed that I’m still alive, being so old and able to enjoy meeting people, enjoy working… I think I’m lucky because I didn’t lose the curiousity, the desire, the energy and the need to express myself.” Rather than saying she is living the life of Riley, she is living the life of Agnes Varda.

Blue is the colour of the sea, the colour of Emma’s hair, and the colour of teenage love, which is genuine and yet vulnerable. Adapted from the French graphic novel by Julie Morach, the film narrates the romantic relationship between 15-year-old Adèle and Emma, with her stunning blue hair. Although 3 hours long, the film is never boring, with bold representations of sexuality that prove intimate and touching. Linking scattered moments and delicate relations through adolescence, blue transforms from the loneliest to the warmest colour.

What is more heartbreaking, is when the feelings of resentment and abandonment experienced by her son remain unresolved, as she approaches the end of the road. Based on Japanese author Yasushi Inoue’s autobiographical novel, it is a story about the possible reconciliation between a mother and a son, from years of estrangement and acrimony caused by one painful decision made by the mother. Only through the mother’s worsening case of dementia, can the son truly learn to sit down and understand the story from his mother’s point of view.

Even if you never finished this book, you must have read the classic opening: “One day, I was already old, in the entrance of a public place a man came up to me. He introduced himself and said: ‘… Everyone says you were beautiful when you were young, but I want to tell you I think you’re more beautiful now than then. Rather than your face as a young woman, I prefer your face as it is now. Ravaged.’” Marguerite Duras’ semiautobiographical novella, The Lover, addresses a romantic relationship in Indochina between a Chinese man and a French teenage girl. Adapted by Jean-Jacques Annaud into a film, The Lover wins over even more hearts from the screen. The film visualises this stream-ofconsciousness novel alongside the exotic Mekong River. Jane March, who was just 16 years old, together with Tony Leung, act as star-crossed lovers, whose relationship violates the taboos of their communities. The explicit sex scenes led to criticism, but the film’s sexuality is not coarse or cheaply handled. On the contrary, accompanied by music, the eroticism is distilled into a poetic charm. Compared to the novel, Tony Leung transcends the original image as weak and thin and further presents a Chinese man with attractive manners, deep affection, and complex characteristics.
Even complete philistines of art history cannot be completely ignorant of Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece, Girl with a Pearl Earring. In the painting, a young girl looks back with mouth half-open, as if she tends to utter something. Who is she? What’s her relationship with the painter? Tracy Chevalier, a best-selling author, reveals Vermeer’s life and secret affair with his 16-year-old maid, Griet. Adapted from the novel, the film visualises Vermeer’s world by imbuing the tableau with the quality of an oil painting. Acting as Griet, Scarlett Johansson, wearing headscarf and pearl earrings, looks exactly like the girl in the painting. But being from different classes and genders, Griet always behaves in a reserved manner in front of Vermeer and never explicitly reveals her true feelings. Only the painting records her halfopen mouth, from which the audience can imagine their obscure relationship.
