La luz ha sido el concepto que ha guiado una buena parte de las búsquedas curatoriales de esta vigésima edición, una edición que ofrece como pocas la oportunidad de mirar hacia atrás y hacer un balance, pero también de dirigir la mirada hacia un futuro lleno de esperanza. En Los días azules(1985), escribió el colombiano Fernando Vallejo: “Y de rencor en rencor me fui adentrando en la noche oscura del odio, donde dispersas brillaban una que otra chispita de amor”. Esas chispas, esos destellos de luz son los que en alguna medida nos hemos propuesto en toda la programación de este año. En primer lugar, hemos querido “sacar a la luz” el secreto colombiano mejor guardado en Francia: NIETO, un descalabrado feliz, un artista, performer y cineasta que desde Carlitopolis (2006) se ha convertido en un habitué del Festival de Cortometrajes de Clermont-Ferrand, donde su más reciente trabajo obtuvo el Premio del Jurado de Labo, y quien este año ha regresado al país para ser parte de la Competencia Nacional de Animación y a presentar una exposición en la Alianza Francesa y un programa retrospectivo de 27 piezas audiovisuales, que reúnen lo mejor de sus cortometrajes, videoclips, performances e incluso varias obras publicitarias, las cuales están llenas de la plasticidad y de la osadía que pocos se atreverían a explorar. Un enfant terrible, proveniente de Cali y residente en París desde hace décadas. En segundo lugar, nos unimos a la celebración de la primera década de trabajo de una productora colombiana cuyos cortometrajes han hecho parte fundamental de la historia de BOGOSHORTS: Evidencia Films, empresa con la cual el director Franco Lolli y la productora Capucine Mahé no solo han desarrollado proyectos propios como el corto Rodri (2012) y los largometrajes Gente de bien (2014) y Litigante (2019), sino con la que también han colaborado creativamente en la carrera de jóvenes figuras del cine colombiano como Laura Huertas Millán, Juan Sebastián Quebrada, Duván Duque y Simón Mesa Soto. Sus cortos han estrenado en los principales escenarios cineamtográficos, como Toronto IFF, FIDMarseille, Biarritz y Cannes, y para celebrar su trabajo hemos organizado dos programas retrospectivos que contarán con la presencia de estos realizadores. En los meses de organización de esta edición, resultó impostergable el deseo de homenajear un nombre que será eterno, a pesar de habernos sorprendido con su partida en septiembre de este año: Jean-Luc Godard (1930-2022), faro, referente y figura ineludible del cine contemporáneo. En alianza con L’Agence du Court Métrage y la Embajada de Francia en Colombia, hemos querido ofrecer un programa de sus primeros cortometrajes —incluyendo una codirección con François Truffaut— y un corto, realizado por una pareja de admiradores, en el que su ausencia es tan tangible como ahora, pero en el que su luz es claramente inagotable. Y como la luz es inseparable de la oscuridad y las tinieblas, como decía Vallejo más arriba, también nos sumamos a la celebración del centenario de Nosferatu, de F. W. Murnau, con dos programas que dan cuenta de cierta tradición iberoamericana que bebe de esta legendaria figura del terror. Desde Colombia, cuatro obras producidas entre 1999 y 2022 evidenciarán la influencia aún actual del gótico tropical y ese interés por actualizar la figura del vampiro, ofreciendo retratos con códigos muy locales. Además, un programa de cortos de España y Portugal da cuenta del rol que las mujeres han empezado a ocupar, lejos de la pasividad de la víctima y encarnando incluso ellas mismas esta pulsión hematofílica del monstruo. Estos son Los colmillos del Conde de Orlok. Finalmente, hemos invitado al curador Felipe Montoya, quien durante siete años fue jefe de programación de BOGOSHORTS (2015-2021), para diseñar un programa retrospectivo de talentos colombianos que han brillado con sus cortometrajes en los últimos años. Estos son los Destellos, obras que han deleitado las pupilas e hicieron dirigir la mirada del público hacia la trayectoria de trece cineastas (aunque había una veintena más por destacar). En el primer programa, El cuerpo y la tierra, cuerpos (terrestres) y, en su mayoría, femeninos, viajan e interactúan con los elementos de una naturaleza exuberante y omnipresente. En el segundo programa, La ciudad y los sueños, diversos personajes se enfrentan a la realidad de habitar la jungla de cemento persiguiendo o escapando de sus sueños. Con esto cerramos la celebración de este vigésimo aniversario y, asimismo, agradecemos a Felipe por su paso en el largo proceso de convertirnos en lo que hoy somos. Light has been the concept that has guided a good part of the curatorial lines of this 20th edition, an edition that offers like few others the opportunity to look back and take stock, but also to look toward a future full of hope. In Los días azules (1985), Colombian author Fernando Vallejo wrote: “And from rancor to rancor I went deep into the dark night of hatred, where scattered sparks of love shone”. Those sparks, those flashes of light are what we have proposed to some extent in all of this year’s programming. First of all, we wanted to “bring to light” the best kept Colombian secret in France: NIETO, a happy misfit, an artist, performer and filmmaker who since Carlitopolis (2006) has become a regular at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, where his most recent work won the Labo Jury Prize, This year he has returned to the country to be part of the National Animation Competition and to present an exhibition at the Alliance Française and a retrospective program of 27 audiovisual pieces, which brings together the best of his short films, music videos, performances and even several advertising works, which are full of plasticity and boldness that few would dare to explore. An enfant terrible born in Cali and resident in Paris for some decades now.

Secondly, we join in the celebration of the first decade of work of a Colombian production company whose short films have been a fundamental part of the history of BOGOSHORTS: Evidencia Films, a company with which director Franco Lolli and producer Capucine Mahé have not only developed their own projects such as the short film Rodri (2012) and the feature films Gente de bien (2014) and Litigante (2019), but with which they have also collaborated creatively in the careers of young Colombian film figures such as Laura Huertas Millán, Juan Sebastián Quebrada, Duván Duque and Simón Mesa Soto. Their short films have premiered at major film festivals such as Toronto IFF, FIDMarseille, Biarritz and Cannes, and to celebrate their work we have organized two retrospective programs with the presence of these filmmakers. During the months of organizing this year’s edition, the desire to pay tribute to a name that will be eternal, despite having surprised us with his departure in September of this year, was unavoidable: Jean-Luc Godard (1930-2022), beacon, reference and inescapable figure of contemporary cinema. In alliance with L’Agence du Court Métrage and the French Embassy in Colombia, we wanted to offer a program of his early short films —including a co-direction with François Truffaut— and a short film, made by a couple of admirers, in which his absence is as tangible as it is now, but in which his light is clearly inexhaustible. And since light is inseparable from darkness and gloom, as Vallejo said above, we also join in the celebration of the centenary of F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, with two programs that reflect a certain Ibero-American tradition that draws from this legendary horror figure. From Colombia, four works produced between 1999 and 2022 will show the still current influence of tropical gothic and the interest in updating the figure of the vampire, offering portraits with very local codes. In addition, a program of short films from Spain and Portugal will show the role that women have played these years, far from the passivity of the victim and even embodying this hematophilic impulse of the darkest monster. This special program’s title is The Fangs of Count Orlok. Finally, we have invited curator Felipe Montoya, who for seven years was head of programming at BOGOSHORTS (2015-2021), to design a retrospective program of Colombian talents who have shone with their short films in recent years. These are the Sparks, short films that have delighted the pupils and made the public look at the trajectory of thirteen filmmakers (although there were twenty more to be highlighted). In the first program, Soil and Body, (terrestrial) bodies, mostly female, travel and interact with the elements of an exuberant and omnipresent nature. In the second program, Cities and Dreams, various characters face the reality of inhabiting the concrete jungle, chasing or escaping from their dreams. With this we close the celebration of this twentieth anniversary and, likewise, we thank Felipe for his passage in the long process of making us what we are today.
