Third Year Competition a renovation of the restrooms located at the duck pond at virginia tech
renewingwaste waste doesn’t always truly have to go to waste. with the rennovation on the restrooms located along the duck pond, compost is being created and energy is fed back into the environment. not only is waste stored and renewed, but rain water is also collected and stored in order to help supply the material use of water inside the restrooms and also along the top of the roof gardens. a renewal of energy serves as the focal point behind the project. all of the materials used within the project have either been recycled, restored or salvaged. the energy used to generate the mechanics of the restrooms are drawn from the sun’s rays through photovoltaics, located on the roof of the restrooms. the energy collected from the sun can be stored and then used later on when the space is being inhabited. the rain water is collected through troughs that run along the top and bottom of the structure that then feed into a water tank located beneath the earth’s surface. the water that is collected is later used to provide water for the sinks and roof garden. no water is needed for the toilets because they are merely compost toilets. the interior spacial quality of the bathrooms is enhanced through perferated holes that are located towards the top of the interior wall. these holes allow light to travel into the space through out the day and also allow the exterior spaces to be lowly lit at night. with the perferated holes, the space is properly day light while the sun is in the sky, and allows the stored energy from the day to properly light the exterior space through out the night. with the new renovation, energy is recycled in countless ways. materials are recycled, water is reused, waste is converted into compost, and energy collected from the sun in used to light the space during the day and through out the night. the storage of energy is utilized to provide a structure that is able to give back to the environment in a multitude of ways.
