COYOTE C ALL The History of Thanksgiving By: Kaitlyn Brooks

There is much debate about where and when the first day of thanks was held in America. Some claim that the event was observed by the Spanish, years before the English even arrived in this country. others say that the holiday was originally celebrated by the native Americans; although it had a different name. The holiday we know as Thanksgiving has been shaped by myth, legend, and misunderstandings throughout the years, and is mostly inaccurate. We all know the story; the Pilgrims came to America, to what is now Cape Cod in a small ship named the Mayflower, determined to escape religious persecution in England. They were underprepared and vulnerable in unfamiliar territory and faced a harsh winter riddled with disease, freezing temperatures, and suffering, subsequently losing forty-six out of the one-hundred and two people who settled in Plymouth. The pilgrims were then visited by English speaking native Americans named Samoset, and Squanto, the latter of whom showed the Pilgrims how to plant corn and other crops. The harvest that year was plentiful, and Governor William Bradford declared a “Day of Thanksgiving” that lasted three days. The settlers invited the local Massasoit indians of Wampanoag tribe. As it turns out, this account is largely inaccurate. The event that took place in 1621 was simply a hunting party and harvest festival between the natives and the settlers, who wanted to enact a peace treaty. The pilgrims and their guests likely had a very different menu than the turkey, gravy, and cranberry sauce that comes to mind. The meal largely consisted of seafood like crab, lobster, eels, and fish but also included corn, goose, squash, and duck. The pilgrims did eat turkey, but they weren't the centerpieces that they are today. The most exciting food were the five deer that the Native Americans brought. The first “official” Thanksgiving in America was declared by Massachusetts Colony Governor, John Winthrop in 1637 in celebration of the “safe” return of colonial hunters who had just journeyed to what is now Mystic, Connecticut where they massacred 700 Pequot Indians. The actual story of how Thanksgiving came to be is much longer and spans several centuries.

T H E H I S TO RY O F T H A N K S G I V I N G The “First Thanksgiving” as it was in 1637 is starkly contrasted with the family-centered day of thanks, feasting, and football that we celebrate today. So how did we get to this point? How did Thanksgiving come to be? The answer lies with a determined women named Sara Josepha Hale. Known as the “Mother of Thanksgiving”, Sarah Hale was one of the first American women novelists, author of the nursery rhyme Mary had a Little Lamb, and editor of Ladies’ Magazine from 1828-1836. She decided that America needed a permanent annual holiday of thanksgiving, and she stopped at nothing to get it. From 1827 to 1863, Sarah Hale relentlessly sent letter after letter demanding the holiday from governors, state and federal officials, and every president in office during those years. It wasn't until 1863 that she got what she wanted. Hale managed to convince President Abraham Lincoln to declare thanksgiving in order to bring the nation together after the horrible events of the Civil War. Lincoln responded by setting two Thanksgivings that year; one on August 6 to celebrate Union victory at Gettysburg, and another for the second Thursday in November. Thanksgiving remained an unofficial holiday in the United States until President Franklin Delano Roosevelt added the holiday on the last Thursday of November in order to lengthen the Christmas Season. Although he faced opposition for what was seen as a controversial decision, Congress declared Thanksgiving a national holiday two years later. Thanksgiving has remained on the last Thursday of November since then.

* * *

Today, Thanksgiving is one of the largest and most widely celebrated holidays in the United States. Every year, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade marches through the streets of New York City with over 50 million viewers watching the procession on television. Millions of people gather around tables with their families to eat, laugh, and be thankful for what they have. Americans consume an average of 46 million turkeys on Thanksgiving day, more than double the amount on Christmas. While our traditions and ideas about Thanksgiving may be different than what actually happened, it is important to remember the long history that Thanksgiving has. Thanksgiving almost never happened, and if it wasn’t for the pilgrims, indians, Sarah Hale, and many others, the holiday may not even exist! So this Thanksgiving, be thankful for the fact that there even is a holiday dedicated to being thankful.

Fall Baking Recipes By: Jordan Brooks

Baking Tips

Adding a little bit of instant coffee to a recipe with chocolate will intensify the flavor.

Ingredients:

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

5. 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

1. 1/2 cup of vegetable oil

6. 1 teaspoon of salt

2. 3/4 cups Hershey’s baking cocoa

7. 2 cups of flour

3. 2 cups of granulated sugar

8. 2 teaspoons of baking powder (not baking soda)

Measuring using a scale is

4. 4 eggs

9. 1 cup of powdered sugar

always preferable to measuring cups.

Directions: In a large mixing bowl (or stand mixer), mix the vegetable oil. baking cocoa, and granulated sugar. Blend in one egg at a time until thoroughly blended. Add vanilla. Stir in flour, salt, and baking powder.

Sift your flour through before you weigh/measure it. One cup of flour weighs 4 1/4 ounces.

Hot Apple Cider

Hot Apple Cider is a staple for fall. This recipe is simple and can be prepared in minutes.

Chill for several hours or overnight. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 375 ºF. Drop teaspoonfuls of the cookie dough into powdered sugar. Roll the cookie dough around in the sugar to form them into balls. Place cookies on a parchment lined baking sheet (or a silicon mat). Bake for ten minutes.

Ingredients: 2 cups of Apple Cider (Preferably Barsotti or Bishop’s Apple Cider) 1/4 cup brown sugar 2 cinnamon sticks 2 cloves

Directions: Put all of the ingredients into a medium saucepan. Heat on medium for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. When done, serve in a mug, remove the cloves and (unless you’re feeling fancy) the cinnamon sticks. Serves 2.

A R T W ITH THE MA S TERS art class Art with the masters is an art class where students learn about the most well known greats of the art world, and explore their own style through imitating the styles of the masters. Each week, a new famous style is learned, and the class ends with many miniature master-pieces.

The Teacher

Nancy Mclean teaches the Art with the Masters class. She was in 3rd grade, living in Ohio, when she decided that she wanted to be an art teacher. She loves all kinds of art, but her favorite is impressionism. Her favorite art masters are Van Gogh, Monet, Degas, and Mary Cassat. She loves art because it is very cheerful and makes her happy, especially brightly colored art. She finds that it is a good de-stresser and very relaxing.

“I FOUND I COULD SAY THINGS WITH COLOR AND SHAPES THAT I COULDN’T SAY ANY OTHER WAY - THINGS I HAD NO WORDS FOR.” -GEORGIA O’KEEFFE

I like Van Gogh and Leonardo da Vinci, because Van Gogh saw the world from a different perspective, and Leonardo da Vinci pushed the boundaries of creative potential, and is known as a genius for it.

“ART IS NOT WHAT YOU SEE, BUT WHAT YOU MAKE OTHERS SEE.” -EDGAR DEGAS

“I WANT TO REACH EVERYDAY PEOPLE, NOT JUST THE ART CRITICS OF THE ART WORLD.” -GRANT WOOD

REAIAH REA LIKES PAINTING “BECAUSE IT MAKES IT LOOK MORE BOLD. IT MAKES THE COLOR STAND OUT.”. HER FAVORITE ART MASTER IS VAN GOGH, BECAUSE SHE LIKES HIS IMPRESSIONISM STYLE, AND HOW HE SHOWS ALL OF THE DOTS AND DASHES IN THE PAINT. ART MAKES HER FEEL BETTER WHENEVER SHE’S FEELING BLUE, AND IT QUICKLY CHEERS HER UP.

REBECA REBECA LOVES CARTOON DRAWING AND SKETCHING, AND HER FAVORITE ARTIST IS EARNEST H. SHEPARD. SHE LIKES HOW YOU CAN DO PRACTICALLY ANYTHING THROUGH ART.

AAR O N AARON LOVES ANIMATION AND SURREALISM, AND HIS FAVORITE ARTIST IS WALT DISNEY. HE LIKES ART BECAUSE OF THE INDIVIDUAL SELF-EXPRESSION THAT IT LETS ARTISTS EXPRESS.

KAY LE KAYLE LIKES MODERN ART AND REALISM. SHE LIKES REALISM, BECAUSE IT LOOKS VERY NATURAL, AND IT APPEARS TO BE REAL EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT. MODERN ART APPEALS TO HER BECAUSE OF ITS VARIETY, AND BECAUSE IT IS MORE RELATABLE. HER FAVORITE MASTER IS PIET MONDRIAN, BECAUSE OF HIS BASIC COLORS AND LINEAR STYLE. SHE LIKES ART BECAUSE IT IS AN EXPRESSIVE OUTLET.

TAYL OR TAYLOR LIKES DRAWING CARTOONS AND MANGA. SHE LIKES ABSTRACT, BRIGHT, MODERN, AND FUN ART STYLES. VAN GOGH IS HER FAVORITE ART MASTER. SHE LIKES HOW HIS ART IS SIMULTANEOUSLY ABSTRACT AND REALISTIC. “YOU CAN DRAW ANYTHING YOU WANT. YOU CAN LITERALLY DREAM ANYTHING AND YOU CAN DRAW IT. IT’S LIKE YOUR DREAMS ARE COMING TRUE. THE ART THAT SOMEONE DOES TELLS A LOT ABOUT THE PERSON, AND YOU CAN TELL HOW THEY FEEL.”

AM AND A RACHEL RACHEL’S FAVORITE KIND OF ART IS PENCIL. HER FAVORITE ARTIST IS MONET, AND SHE LOVES ART BECAUSE IT ENABLES HER TO EXPRESS HERSELF FOR WHO SHE IS AND SHE IS ABLE TO BE CREATIVE THROUGH HER ART.

AMANDA IS MOST COMFORTABLE DRAWING CARTOONY OR REALISTIC ART. SHE LIKE THE WAY IT FEELS AND LOOKS. HER FAVORITE ART MASTER IS EARNEST H. SHEPARD. SHE LIKES ART BECAUSE OF “THE FREEDOM IT GIVES YOU TO EXPRESS YOURSELF. THINGS YOU CAN’T REALLY SAY.”

KAY LA KAYLA IS FOND OF ABSTRACT ART. HER FAVORITE ART MASTER IS EARNEST H. SHEPARD. SHE LIKES ART BECAUSE IT IS VERY RELAXING AND ENJOYABLE.

My favorite kind of art is painting because the colors seem to flow so nicely, and I like pencil because it is easy to create almost anything, no matter how detailed and complex it is. I like art because it is a way for my imagination to come to life and become a part of reality. I feel like art is a way for me to introspect and bring pieces of my psyche to light. I find it very revealing in terms of who I am and what creativity is capable of. I also like it because it’s fun.

PARIS PARIS IS MORE FOND OF SKETCHING THAN PAINTING, AND HER FAVORITE MASTER IS GEORGIA O’KEEFFE. SHE LIKES ALL KINDS OF ART, AND DOESN’T PREFER ANY ONE STYLE OVER THE OTHER.

“PAINTING IS POETRY WHICH IS SEEN AND NOT HEARD, AND POETRY IS A PAINTING WHICH IS HEARD BUT NOT SEEN.” -LEONARDO DA VINCI
