C A L L % Though it’s a simple concept, GMO labeling has come up against extreme Feeding the Hype? opposition. Food crops are packaging to identify genetically engineered engineered to be resistant to weed killers like ingredients. This would force companies that Roundup, as well as able to produce their own use GMOs to raise production costs, which will pesticide and are drought tolerant. These then cause them to raise employment costs, qualities are examples of how the biotech until these increased costs get passed down to industry is supposedly changing agriculture for the consumer. According to a 2014 Cornell the better to “feed the world.” However, University study, if New York enforced GMO foods may not be all they’re cracked up mandatory labeling, it could cost a family of to be. The organic food industry believes that four up to $1,500 more per year in annual food the pesticides produced by GMO plants don't costs (Lesser). They claim that by forcing them just kill bugs, but people too. Studies have also to label GMOs, the other non-GMO food found that the resistance to weed killers in companies will look better and cheaper in these plants isn't very strong and that comparison on store shelves, giving them an herbicides, like 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, unfair competitive advantage. giving the health-conscience consumer more affordable food options. Then, instead of putting millions of dollars toward anti-labeling campaigns, big agribusiness corporations can fund research on the long-term effects, if any, of GMO consumption.
“There is a lot we don't know about the long-term and epidemiological risks of GE—which is no reason for panic, but a good reason for caution, particularly in view of alternatives that are more effective and economical” (Gurian-Sherman).
% We may never see an end to the controversy. If foods continue to be genetically engineered, there will always be those who believe GMO foods are a solution to world hunger and conversely, those who are concerned about the nutritional and health risks. Which side one supports is a personal choice: the shady side of the powerful agrochemical corporations, like Monsanto, or the organic farming communities who actually want to feed the world, not their pockets.

Change
Sara Teasdale
Remember me as I was then; Turn from me now, but always see The laughing shadowy girl who stood At midnight by the flowering tree, With eyes that love had made as bright As the trembling stars of the summer night. Turn from me now, but always hear The muted laughter in the dew Of that one year of youth we had, The only youth we ever knew— Turn from me now, or you will see What other years have done to me.
Advice to a Girl No one worth possessing Can be quite possessed; Lay that on your heart, My young angry dear; This truth, this hard and precious stone, Lay it on your hot cheek, Let it hide your tear. Hold it like a crystal When you are alone And gaze in the depths of the icy stone. Long, look long and you will be blessed: No one worth possessing Can be quite possessed.
Sara Teasdale was an American poet whose subjects centered around the female mind and women’s views of beauty, love, and death. She was much sought after when she was young, and ended up divorcing the man she married.
I can relate to both of these poems. “Change” is like a plea for an onlooker to see the softer side of the narrator - the person she used to be. She doesn’t want to be known for the hardness and bitterness in her. She wants to be remembered as what she used to be before life crushed her. In “Advice to a Girl”, Teasdale tells the female population in general to be confident and know that she doesn’t have to have someone to be someone.
Emily Bronte Hope Hope was but a timid friend; She sat without the grated den, Watching how my fate would tend, Even as selfish-hearted men. She was cruel in her fear; Through the bars, one dreary day, I looked out to see her there, And she turned her face away! Like a false guard, false watch keeping, Still, in strife, she whispered peace; She would sing while I was weeping; If I listened, she would cease. False she was, and unrelenting; When my last joys strewed the ground, Even Sorrow saw, repenting, Those sad relics scattered round; Hope, whose whisper would have given Balm to all my frenzied pain, Stretched her wings, and soared to heaven, Went, and ne'er returned again!
She Dried Her Tears She dried her tears and they did smile To see her cheeks' returning glow How little dreaming all the while That full heart throbbed to overflow With that sweet look and lively tone And bright eye shining all the day They could not guess at midnight lone How she would weep the time away
Emily Bronte was best known for her book Wuthering Heights. She was one of several sisters, all of whom became well-known authors. Bronte was extremely ambitious and intelligent. I feel like I can relate to both of these poems. The first poem, “Hope” is more about hopelessness than it is hope. And though I often feel this way - as if the universe is against me and I have no hope, I know the truth: that I have a God who is the ultimate source of hope standing right beside me. The second poem, “She Dried Her Tears” is extremely relatable because who doesn’t do this? What girl or guy for that matter doesn’t hide their feelings and put on a brave face in public. We all do this.
Poems That I Like Feline Fantasies By Aly Stealey,
"When the day is done, And no light comes my way I sit and talk with my cat and we make plans to be deviant."
By Rylie Udall
Aly Stealey wrote this poem. She is in the 8th grade, and goes to Hereford Middle School. I like this poem because it talks about spending time with your cat and as many know, I love cats.
That’s Why I AM Scared By Bob Marley
“You say you love rain, but you use an umbrella to walk under it. You say you love sun, but you seek shelter when it is shining. You say you love wind, but when it comes you close your windows. So that's why I'm scared when you say you love me.”
Bob Marley was born February 6, 1945. He was a Jamaican song writer who became one of the worldwide, best-selling artists of all time.
I like this part of the song because it talks about love and how little things can make you scared to believe in someone.
Holding On And Letting Go By Erin Hanson
I was the type of person, That held onto things too tight, Unable to release my grip, When it no longer felt right, And although it gave me blisters, And my fingers would all ache, I always thought that holding on, Was worth the pain it takes,
I like this poem mostly because many times I have I tried holding on to something that was not good for me.
Erin Hanson is a female artist who went to college for art. She likes to be outside to inspire her work.
I used to think in losing things, I’d lose part of me too, That slowly I’d become someone, My heart no longer knew, Then one day something happened, I dropped what I had once held dear, But my soul became much lighter, Instead of filled with fear... I picked two poems by the same person because I feel like she is really understanding and reaches out to the person reading. I like the poem “What If I Fall” because it is telling you to take a risk. You don’t know what could happen until you try.
What If I Fall? By Erin Hanson
There is freedom waiting for you, On the breezes of the sky, And you ask, "What if I fall?" Oh, but my darling, What if you fly?
POEMS selected by Bailey Brooks Whose woods these are I think I know. His house is in the village, though; He will not see me stopping here To watch his woods fill up with snow. My little horse must think it queer To stop without a farmhouse near Between the woods and frozen lake The darkest evening of the year He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound's the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep. -Robert Frost, Stopping In The Woods On A Snowy Evening; Robert Frost lived from 1874 to 1963. He had six children, four of which he outlived. He was the first poet to read at a presidential inauguration. I’m particularly fond of this poem, having heard it at a young age. To me, it states that you can find beauty even when the suffocation of being alone looms over you. That there is more to live for; to live through the cold, dark winter just to see the spring. Will you stand above me? Look my way, never love me Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling Down, down, down -Simple Minds, Don’t You Forget About Me; formed in 1977. This song is composed and written by the producer of the band, Kieth Forsey. It was released on the 20th of February, 1985 (image via The Breakfast Club, a movie the song was featured in).
I like this song because it reminds me of a better time, when life was simpler and finding yourself was easier. Now, no one knows what they want to do or who they want to be, and it’s terrifying.
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings The free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wings in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing... The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. -Maya Angelou, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, published in 1969, Maya Angelou was born in 1928 and died in 2014. She was a poet, a memoirist, and a civil rights activist. She had one child. This poem alludes to the segregation and suffering of black people, which is an important issue. On a personal note for me, it symbolizes the lack of freedom that comes from being only sixteen, and the want to do so much without the means.
There is freedom waiting for you, On the breezes of the sky, And you ask “What if I fall?” Oh but my darling, What if you fly? -Erin Hanson; not much is known
I miss cities that I have never visited, the books I have never read, the hearts I have never broken, the tears I have never shed. I crave for the love I never got the thoughts I never had the smiles I never showed the person I never was
-s.g.; unknown This poem speaks for itself. Almost anyone can relate to it, and that’s what I like about it; it’s very general but very deep. It says what people never get the chance to think.
I tried to forget but you grew roots around my ribcage and sprouted flowers just below my collarbones. all day I pluck their petals but I have not yet ascertained whether you love me or not -Unknown
This poem is simple and elegant, with so much meaning. It speaks of the woes that come along with love, and of the pain that doesn’t solely consist of heartbreak. It’s the not knowing, and the absence of anything, that hurts the most.
