My Favorite View By: Faith Rice As I walked down the old, worn path with my two best friends at my side, I got more and more excited for the sight that I was going to see. We were hiking up Bald Mountain, the mountain that sits behind my house. The hike wasn't long, about a mile and a half, but it was straight uphill the whole way. My friends and I started off at my house and walked to the base of the mountain. We walked safely on the side of the road that had hardly any traffic. Once we got to the base, we crossed through a gate. We always had trouble opening and closing this gate because it was tied to a post with barbed wire and the only way to open it was to slide the barbed wire over the post. The post was slightly taller than the wire could reach and we had to stretch it bit, but somehow we managed it. We walked through the tall, dry grass, getting stickers all over our socks, but we didn't mind. There were beautiful wildflowers growing everywhere and since I have an obsession with flowers, I started picking some and putting them in my water bottle. I would try to pick one of each flower, unless I really liked it, then I would get two. Being that my two friends are guys, they would give me a hard time for picking them, but then they would argue over which was the prettiest. We talked as we walked past the old oak trees. Some leaves were green, some had a dry brownish-gray look. We had to cross through multiple barbed wire fences, careful not to get poked. We took a couple of breaks to catch our breath, since at this point we had started going uphill and it had started to get steeper. We turned around to look at the way we came. We were barely starting to see the gorgeous view we had come for. We saw the tops of the Buttes out in the distance and lots of trees, but couldn't see much else, for we were still not high enough. We kept on walking, catching up with my little, white dog, Jack. He loved to run ahead of us and scout for any danger that might come our way and bark at the unsuspecting cows. Once, we saw a gray fox jump out of a tree and bound away. Jack, of course, started chasing the fox. It was a funny sight to see and made me and my

friends laugh. Jack had this way of running, kind of like a deer, which just made it even funnier. As we kept going, we got more animated at the thought of the scenic view at the top. The farther we got, the less trees there were ahead of us and the more rocks we had to dodge. We passed by multiple landmarks that made us anxious because we knew we were getting close. We were able to see the top of the mountain now. The side we came up consists of rocks and grass. There are a couple trees but not much, hence the reason it's called Bald Mountain. As we got to the top, I immediately went over to my rock and sat down. The guys came and sat next to me. As we looked out, we were awed by the gorgeous sight that we saw. Out in the distance, we saw lots of green. There were hills covered with trees and it was beautiful! We could see the Sutter Buttes and the highway, with all the cars driving on it. It was a lot of fun at the top of that mountain. My friends and I played games and tried to pinpoint certain spots out in the distance. We stayed up there for hours, enjoying the view and the company. There's a fence at the top that we crossed over to get to our other favorite spot. There's a huge rock that we can climb in and around. We would go exploring and find all sorts of new things. There's a small camper that has a porch built around it. We can't go into it because it's locked and not ours. In one of the rocks there's a little, round metal circle, marking when it was found. This mountain is one of my favorite places to go to. I have lots of memories here and no matter how many times I see it, the view still awes me.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
On rainy days, I periodically go to the living room windows to see if the creek running by the side of our house is filling up. I like to bundle up and walk around the hill on these days. After the dry brownness of summer, the winter grass that creeps along the ground is delightful and refreshing. Not that much of it can be seen, what with leaves of all colors strewn across the ground. Autumn is beautiful. I love jumping in puddles wearing cute rubber boots! Some days are like this, yet others are the exact opposite. Why is it that a sunny day in autumn is so much better than the average summer day? I think that it must be because these days are Out of all the seasons, I have to say that my favorite still cool enough for warm, comfy clothes, and they is autumn. For me, autumn is all about comfy smell good. It smells good at this - the most sweaters, comfort food, time with family, and long wonderful time of the year. walks in the rain. Mostly comfort food, though. In fact the only thing I don't like about autumn is that Because of all the holidays, autumn is a busy time there are copious amounts of Halloween of year. Between preparing food for Thanksgiving decorations. Autumn is beautiful; Halloween is not. and Christmas shopping, my schedule is packed; My dislike for this holiday, does not, however, ruin even though all I do is follow my mom around autumn for me. This season brings with it many saying, "Oh, pretty" and "Can I taste that?". I like delightful things including rain, falling leaves, apple the bustle and excitement, though. I enjoy seeing cider candles, obnoxious Christmas songs, pumpkin my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents spice everything, and, of course, cozy days at home. laughing and eating together. And, of course, my family loves hearing me sing "O Holy Night" as On especially chilly days, my dad lights a fire in our loudly and dramatically as possible - over and over wood stove. Wintertime By: Bailey Brooks What To Do: It is plainly obvious that activities are plentiful in the wintertime. If you celebrate Christmas, you can put up your tree (getting a real one involves the most beloved experience of going to pick it out -- but you can also put up an artificial one to save money). Adding decorations may take a while, but the process is certainly worth it. Aside from trees, you can count down the days to the much anticipated holiday by opening up advent calendars, giving gifts, and Christmas shopping. It may be better to shop online, but hunting around the shops for a present is still great fun.

What To Wear: Sweaters are perfect for everyone. It’s winter, temperatures have dropped, and the last thing anyone wants is to be miserable. So, an obvious choice would be a sweater, or any type of outerwear. Raincoats, jackets, sweatshirts, or cardigans all help bundle up. Layers are very key, so always wear a shirt beneath to keep body temperatures at an appropriate level. As far as accessories go, scarves, gloves and hats make a wonderful trio. Boots are still in, for footwear. However, expensive pairs can be ruined by the muddy ground, so when in doubt, go for a rubber set.
If you don’t celebrate Christmas, you can enjoy the wintertime in other ways; reading, cozying up with the family, going out to the theaters (there are several great movies out at the moment), ice skating, or you can drive up to the mountains and enjoy the snow.
Ways To Decorate Your Home: Obviously, a tree is key, but there’s a lot more to sprucing up your home for the holidays than that. You can put up a wreath, twinkle lights, a garland, stockings, and any other festive decor. A gingerbread house would be a nice touch, or candles, tablecloths and throw pillows.
Things To Drink & Eat: Apple cider, hot chocolate, and coffee are the obvious choices. For parents, spiced mulled wine is a wonderful warm drink, or, if you’re looking for something cold, eggnog always remains an option. Warm foods are brilliant to combat the chill in the air; soup, cinnamon rolls, cookies (any and all baked goods, really), mince pies, and casseroles are perfectly suitable.
For people celebrating Hanukkah, there are themed lights you can put up outside your house, and within, blue twinkle lights are a nice touch.
December, even if you don’t celebrate any holidays, is a wonderful time of the year. It brings everyone closer together and brings us around to a new year, full of new beginnings.

When I get to school my shoes are soaking wet, Personally, my favorite season is winter. The and I can not feel my toes. Another reason I do first reason I like winter is because I am a not like winter is because it means soups and winter baby; I was born in January. Secondly, I stews for dinner, which I do not mind, but like winter is because I like the cold weather having them over and over again is boring and and being able to wear baggy sweatpants and nasty, unless you really like them -- there are a hoodie sweaters, and having a nice warm fire to lot of people like that, actually. warm my hands and feet. Another reason I like winter is because someone special to me has a Another reason I don’t like winter is because it birthday in winter along with myself. And I like rains a lot and the weather is terrible, which winter because the night before Christmas, my means things get cancelled that you have been family and I go up to our church and hold planning on for a long time, and then you end candles and sing Christmas songs. I can watch up stuck at home staring at a wall for another horror movies, especially Christmas horror day — doing nothing. stories, or I like to grab a book and lie in my bed all day and read it at my leisure, even if they make me cry. Lastly, I like this season because it’s when my family and I put up the Christmas tree, and we get to decorate -- and I love decorating. I also love the smell of a fire burning in the morning and waking up to a cold nose.
My Favorite Season
During this time, my family gets together and relatives visit, and I love seeing my baby cousins and my loved ones. When our family visits, I always volunteer to watch the little ones, and I tell them to put on their jackets so they can go outside and play. Last year I remember that my cousins Maddie and Landon were fighting over who gets to sit on my lap (they both ended up sitting on it). I also love getting new items on Christmas morning, but my most favorite thing about winter is the apparel — bring on the warm clothes.
Winter can be amazingly beautiful, but can be very nasty, too. It all depends on how you see it and what kind of a person you are. Especially if you are a person who likes the hot weather which I definitely am not (and there are the crazy people who like to wear summer clothes out in the rainy weather, who make me want to scream: What is wrong with you?! Get back inside before you get sick!) That’s just what I think, though. What about you?

The History Of Skateboarding By: Zephaniah SHJ Skateboarding has had a love/hate relationship with society ever since it was invented. Although a majority of people see skateboarding as destructive, potentially dangerous and don’t fully agree with skating, it’s the history of the sport and the passion skateboarders have that keeps the sport alive. Skateboarding began in the 1950s. It was unknown who made the first skateboard, but it was believed that several people came up with the idea of skateboarding. The first skateboard consisted of roller skate wheels attached to either a wooden box or a board. It was not until the 60’s when companies such as “Larry Stevenson’s Makaha” and “Hobie Alter’s Hobie” saw a great opportunity of skateboarding and actually started manufacturing real parts for a skateboard. Skateboarding became an instant hit, and over a span of three years over fifty million skateboards were sold. Skateboarding became so popular that in 1963 there was a skateboarding competition that took place in Hermosa Beach, CA.

wheels used previously. They gave skaters the ability to travel much faster. The different skateboard sizes provided more stability and easier riding. The different truck sizes provided more agility and better turning. Later in the 70’s, skateboarding became very popular again. The growth in popularity was so high that it led to the creation of skateparks. Yet eventually in the late 70s, growing insurance and low attendance at skateparks caused most of the parks to close down. Because of the inventions made in the ’70s along with the new concave design of the board, they enabled the 1980’s to be mostly known as a decade of the new style of skateboarding. New skateboarding icons such as Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mark Gonzales, Natas Kaupas, and Mike Valley heavily influenced skating by performing new inspiring and breathtaking tricks made possible by the designs and inventions made previously. Most of these skaters have even created their own skate companies today.
Once again in 1990, skateboarding as a sport had a major upswing. This was due to the first Extreme Games or X-Games televised in 1996. X-Games was transmitted internationally and millions of people around the world watched. This exposed skating globally. Skateboarding In the late ’60s, skateboarding wasn’t doing too great. was promoted further because of cyber media, which Safety experts had said skateboarding was a dangerous impacted the sport so much that it went from being an sport, urged stores to stop the production of skateboards, underground activity to being more of a spectator sport. and told parents to not allow their children to buy It was advertised to many more youth than the sport had skateboards. Even though there were bad times for ever experienced. More skateparks and local board shops skateboarding and skate industries, skateboarding never were being built around this time. Skateboarding had went away because of true skateboarders’ strivings to never been bigger. make the sport better. Later in the ’70s, many advancements in skateboarding were made, such as the kick tail invented by Larry Stevenson. This invention gained back popularity for skateboarding because it enabled the possibility of performing a larger variety of tricks. In 1973, the polyurethane wheel, different skateboard sizes, and the specific metal trucks to fit different sizes of skateboards were all invented. Urethane wheels provided skaters with much more grip than that of the roller skating Continued on next page...
By the 2000s, professional skateboarding had changed considerably from its humble beginnings. Now, professional skaters could actually make money from skateboarding, enough money to actually live off of the sport. Skaters also would get sponsorships from different companies and board shops which provided them with clothes, shoes, and skateboards. Since the ’90s, there haven’t been any more innovations to skateboarding. Today, there are many more skaters, board shops, companies, pro-skaters, and skating brands worldwide

than there have ever been. Although there have not been many great innovations added into skateboarding, skating style, participants, companies, and techniques are all constantly changing. Although the skate industry continues to strive, change, and become more mainstream, the underground skateboarding spirit and passion will never change. This is why it is the blood pumping sport it is today.
Queen Potato, King Carrot By: Miranda Foster It was one fine day in the palace. The Queen and King were still alive, thankfully. Usually the rebellions would try to destroy them, their castle, and take rule over all the land. What were the rebels’ names? Well, “Humans” of course.

Bok Choy, everyone, listen up! That means you too, Celery. There are ‘Humans’ attacking us. We need to defend our land. We need help! Not only the Broccoli, but we all need to. King Carrot and I will come with you. But first, we need to train.” So after a few days of training and battling, the ‘Humans’ came back. The Broccoli and Bok Choy were up there since the rest weren’t ready. After a few more weeks, the vegetables were ready to fight. The tension was so thick when the ‘Humans’ were coming. Looking over the bowl, somebody walked over and took everyone. They were stronger than they expected! Everyone died in a pan to make stir-fry that night, and then new vegetables were born.
“Carrot, my darling, when will this end?” Queen Potato looked to King Carrot, with worry in her non-existent eyes. “Do not worry, Potato. Our knights, the Broccoli, will protect us. They’ve done it many times. They can do it again! So please, sit down and relax,” King Carrot assured his lovely, round wife. Breathing in and out, the Queen sat down, not so easily with her short feet. She always observed the castle when she was trying to relax. Her face turned to the walls, as she started to look at the neat carving of the bowl. She then looked towards the other vegetables; worry was stuck on their faces. Sighing, she then saw the red and black carpet. Clearing her throat, Queen Potato stood up, grabbing everyone’s attention. “Broccoli, Eggplants, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Arugula,

"You think I am dead,"
See the pretty snowflakes
The apple tree said,
Falling from the sky;
"Because I have never a leaf to show-
On the wall and housetops
Because I stoop,
Soft and thick they lie.
And my branches droop, And the dull gray mosses over me grow! But I'm still alive in trunk and shoot; The buds of next May I fold awayBut I pity the withered grass at my root." "You think I am dead," The quick grass said, "Because I have parted with stem and blade! But under the ground, I am safe and sound With the snow's thick blanket over me laid.

On the window ledges, On the branches bare;
Now how fast they gather, Filling all the air.
Look into the garden,
Where the grass was green; Covered by the snowflakes, Not a blade is seen.
Now the bare black bushes All look soft and white, Every twig is laden, What a pretty sight!
I'm all alive, and ready to shoot, Should the spring of the year Come dancing hereBut I pity the flower without branch or root." "You think I am dead," A soft voice said, "Because not a branch or root I own. I never have died, but close I hide In a plumy seed that the wind has sown. Patient I wait through the long winter hours; You will see me againI shall laugh at you then, Out of the eyes of a hundred flowers.

Scrunch on the street; Their eyelashes
Are white with sleet. And everywhere
The people go --
With faces tickled By the snow.

WINTER POEMS
COMPILED BY ANTHONY BLACKTHORNE
Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind by William Shakespeare
An Old Man's Winter Night by Robert Frost
Blow, blow, thou winter wind Thou art not so unkind As man's ingratitude; Thy tooth is not so keen, Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude.
All out of doors looked darkly in at him Through the thin frost, almost in separate stars, That gathers on the pane in empty rooms. What kept his eyes from giving back the gaze Was the lamp tilted near them in his hand. What kept him from remembering what it was That brought him to that creaking room was age. He stood with barrels round him -- at a loss. And having scared the cellar under him In clomping there, he scared it once again In clomping off; -- and scared the outer night, Which has its sounds, familiar, like the roar Of trees and crack of branches, common things, But nothing so like beating on a box. A light he was to no one but himself Where now he sat, concerned with he knew what, A quiet light, and then not even that. He consigned to the moon, such as she was, So late-arising, to the broken moon As better than the sun in any case For such a charge, his snow upon the roof, His icicles along the wall to keep; And slept. The log that shifted with a jolt Once in the stove, disturbed him and he shifted, And eased his heavy breathing, but still slept. One aged man -- one man -- can't keep a house, A farm, a countryside, or if he can, It's thus he does it of a winter night.
Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly: Most friendship if feigning, most loving mere folly: Then heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly. Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky, That does not bite so nigh As benefits forgot: Though thou the waters warp, Thy sting is not so sharp As a friend remembered not. Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly: Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly: Then heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly.
Against Winter by Charles Simic The truth is dark under your eyelids. What are you going to do about it? The birds are silent; there's no one to ask. All day long you'll squint at the gray sky. When the wind blows you'll shiver like straw. A meek little lamb you grew your wool Till they came after you with huge shears. Flies hovered over open mouth, Then they, too, flew off like the leaves, The bare branches reached after them in vain. Winter coming. Like the last heroic soldier Of a defeated army, you'll stay at your post, Head bared to the first snow flake. Till a neighbor comes to yell at you, You're crazier than the weather, Charlie.
