Learning How to Drive an M35A2 Deuce and a Half By: Connor Black Driving a Deuce is the hardest thing I ever learned how to do. It was May 31, 2013, and I was 12 years old. The day started like any other. I woke up ate, breakfast, got dressed, and went out to feed the pigs and cows. After this was done, I was watering the garden when my dad came and told me it's time for me to learn how to drive the deuce. For those who don't know, deuce is short for M35A2 deuce and a half which is a Vietnam era military 6x6 with a 5 speed transmission. It is heavy, loud, and hard to steer with lots of power. The first practical use of deuces was during WWII. They were used to transport about 30 troops at a time. The WWII M35 was diesel powered and did not have power steering, so it was a very hard truck to drive. After WWII, its design was improved. It was made bigger, it had power steering, and it was fitted with a very special engine. The engine was a Hercules engine that could put out about 150 horsepower. The most important aspect of the engine was its ability to run different types of fuels. Gasoline, diesel, old motor oil, gear oil hydraulic oil, cooking oil, it could run it all no problem. The second he told me what we were going to do, I started getting nervous, knowing how difficult it was to drive and how different it was from smaller pickup trucks. Nervously, I got in the driver's seat and Dad sat in the passenger seat. After starting it, I put it in first gear, gave it some throttle, and slowly let off the clutch. With a lurch we were off. As I turned hard to the left to get on the driveway the steering wheel forcefully jerked back to the right nearly throwing me out of the seat. I learned then that I would have to be ready from now on when turning sharp. After that it went smoothly. In first gear I hardly had to touch the pedal to move. The brakes were responsive, and the clutch soft. We drove about a half a mile to where we keep all our equipment and tools. Dad decided to add some challenge and filled the 300 gallon water tank in the back with water. When it was full we headed back the way we had come to fill the water trough that the pigs and cows drink out of. As we set

off from the well I noticed how much heavier the Deuce felt and I had to give it a little more throttle than on the way there to keep it from dying. Now I was really nervous because not only did I have to back this whale of a truck up a steep hill to get to the barn. I had to do it with 300 gallons of water in the back. My first try I didn't turn hard enough and started backing up the hill side ways. So I rolled down the hill and tried again. Success! I backed up to the fence and shut the truck off. After filling the water trough, we got back in and headed back towards the house for another load. This load was going up to the water tank that provided water to the house. By now I had learned enough about the Deuce to know this was going to be the worst part of my day. After filling up the tank I backed up to the road that led up to the tank and started backing up. The road was about 500 feet up hill right on the edge of a hill that dropped into a dry creek bed so I had to be extra careful not to go off the side. It was because of this that I ended up on the far edge of the opposite side of the road and started to climb up the bank. I hurriedly pushed in the clutch and rolled back to the bottom of the road and tried again. This kept happening until finally I made it to the tank and shut off the truck. During the rest of the summer I took on more jobs and got better at driving and got more confident. By the end of the summer I could back up to the tank without a problem and was actually starting to enjoy driving that awesome piece of history.

Foot Prints on the Beach By: Susanna Jones “HELP!” I screamed, as loudly as possible -- but it seemed no one could hear me. I tried to scream again, but got a mouthful of ocean water instead. I grabbed onto a piece of drift wood and watched as the Mary Elizabeth drifted away into the distance. I had no idea where I was! I was supposed to be on the Mary Elizabeth with my family and friends, safe and warm. But instead, I was clinging onto a piece of driftwood for dear life, somewhere between Coos Bay, and Baja, California, getting swallowed by the waves. I hoped that my family or my very best friend Alissa had noticed that I was gone, and would tell Captain Joe to turn back to retrieve me. I hoped and prayed, and hoped and prayed.... Still nothing. I finally gave up the thought of them coming back and decided to look for a large board or something I could lie down on and rest my aching shoulders. I awkwardly scrambled up on my driftwood to get a better view of my surroundings. After a few minutes of squinting through the darkness I found a suitable piece of plywood directly in front of me. As quickly as I could, I paddled myself towards the piece of plywood. For awhile, it felt like I was just paddling and not getting anywhere, but pretty soon I was gaining on my soon to be raft. After about ten minutes I caught up to it. I grabbed ahold and scrambled aboard, letting go of my driftwood. I lay my head down on my door-like raft and was soon fast asleep. Crrrrr crrrrrrr crrrrrrrr screamed the seagulls above my head. I abruptly sat up and frantically looked about. I must have washed up on an island during the storm. Squinting up into the bright hot sun I guessed it must be about one in the afternoon. Standing up, I felt sharp pain in my right leg. I looked down to discover a large cut extending from my thigh to just above my ankle. Limping over to the water I waded knee deep to wash my wound. I winced as the salt stung my cut. Turning around to study my surroundings, I realized that I was on an island about a mile long, covered in palm trees and brush. Limping up to the trees I ripped off a piece of my shirt and wrapped it around my leg. Feeling a Continued on next page...

little better I found a long thin branch to use as a walking stick. Leaning on it, I began to explore my new environment. As I walked along I called out, hoping someone would hear me. Deciding to walk along the beach, I hoped to find items that had washed up from the storm, or even someone! As I went along I didn’t notice any footprints, or anything of significance, just trees, sand, and brush. Feeling kind of dejected, I didn’t realize that I was coming upon a slope. Suddenly, I abruptly halted my depressed walk and realized that I had almost fallen down a steep hill! Looking down on the last half of the island I noticed some objects down on the beach. Finding a narrow path on the side of the hill I hurriedly limped towards the objects, hoping that they were some sort of food or possibly a person. Getting closer my heart sank as I realized that there was no possible way that these objects could have been a human being. I realized that they were only boxes. Limping up to them, I quickly sized them up; they were about four feet tall by 4 feet wide. Walking around the boxes hoping for a hint of what was contained inside of them or even a way to peek inside; I noticed that there were many boxes all along the beach. As I looked around for a thick branch or something to pry the boxes open I recognized some of the crates! “YES!” I shouted into the ocean, dancing around for pure joy. Tremendous pain stopped my joyful twirl. In my exuberance I had disrupted the sand and it had reentered my wound. Having to walk back down to the water and re-wash my wound I stumbled over a large branch that would work perfectly for prying the boxes open! After a few minutes of struggling with the first box I was finally able to pry it open. Squinting into its dark interior, my eyes rested upon some ropes and sacks. Wondering what I could do with these newfound treasures. I walked to the next box and pried it open as well. Peering into the next box I found exactly what I was hoping to find! FOOD! Excitedly digging into the dried fruit, I decided to grab a sack from the previous box and stuff it full of provisions.

With a new bounce in my step I walked up to the tree line and found a satisfactory area in which to build a camp. It had four large palm trees really close to each other. Laying my goods down, I walked back down to the boxes and made several trips back and forth, toting provisions to my new camp. When I was finally done I took the ropes and strung them between the trees. Cutting some sacks open to hang on the sides, I started building my shelter. Seeing how it was almost always windy I decided to hang the sacks low enough to where I could bury the ends in sand so the wind couldn’t get through. Finding a sharp rock I sharpened it with another rock so I could use it as a knife. When the rock was sharp, I took it to some palm trees, and climbed up into a shorter one. Using my "knife" I sawed some branches off and dragged them to my shelter to lay on top for a roof. I was stuck upon this island for three weeks. Each morning I would make a chink in a tree by the door of my shelter so I wouldn't loose track of the days. during the weeks I had been imprisoned on the island I had explored its entirety. I discovered a pool of water about the size of a hot tub near my encampment, and I had also discovered a field of edible berries. Even though life was lonely I still climbed up to the highest point of the island as often as I could hoping to see some sort of boat or ship, but was always disappointed. Every day I dealt with the struggle of giving up on being rescued. I forced myself to continue to climb up the cliff everyday, only to be disappointed with the fact that someone still hadn't come. Sitting on my perch on the cliff, I decided to gather what few dead branches or sticks remained. Making piles of fuel at each end of the island to create signal fires to alert nearby ships.

walked up to my perch to wait for someone to come. Another day went by of watching and waiting. As I was walking along the beach thinking about the footprints, I decided to go look at them once more and headed for the hill. Reaching it, I looked at them closely and realized that they were shoe prints!!! Not bare feet prints, for I had long since discovered that it was easier to scale the rocks barefooted. Feeling angry at myself for not looking at them the moment I had noticed them, I ran along the beaches looking for a boat hoping that the person was still here. Reaching the far side of the island I noticed a boat amongst the rocks. No wonder I hadn't realized that someone was here! For the boat blended right into the rocks. Yelling for the person, I stopped to catch my breath and listened for a reply. Hearing a distant voice I charged towards it. Rounding a bend in the rocks I body slammed into none other than Captain Joe! “Joe! Is it really you?” I asked.

“Yes child, it is me,” he answered. Finally reunited with another human being! I burst out with talk, telling him everything that I had done and how I had been waiting for this day for exactly 5 months and 7 days! When I was finally out of breath, he told me that my mother, father, and younger brother had accompanied him to the island. Feeling a warm sensation inside of me that I had not felt for awhile, I asked him where they were. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into He told me that they were back on the boat. He asked months. It seemed like an eternity since I me to take him to my camp to gather my belongings had awoken on the beach. Thinking this I and they could take me home. One day, as I walked along the beach on my way back from home and gathering my most prized possessions, I felt gathering muscles at one of the coves and ascended up a hint of sadness to be leaving the place that had been the hill that I had almost fallen down the first day that my home for so long. Find a good nozzle so the One new thing I've done was raise a pig in 4-H. I wanted to raise a pig because I thought it would be fun, pig can drink the water. Nozzles can be bought at WalMart. Test it first, so if you have to, you can modify it and because of the money. I also wanted to take on a to make it work better. new responsibility. It wasn't easy for me, but I hope this will help you if you decide to raise a pig for a fair I know how to feed and water. It's also been two this year. Despite what most people think, it's very weeks since I bought my pig so now I can start hard, but you'll get the hang of it. You start in April, training. All I need to start is a pig stick or a whip, but and the ideal weight of the pig when you first get it is I prefer to use a PVC pipe. The first rule of training is 60-75 pounds. The back legs have a 45 degree angle. to let your pig get some energy out for a good ten This is important because any angle bigger than 45 degrees is like it is sitting on the ground, and anything minutes. Once it’s done running around and eaten some weeds, you can start training. When I’m training smaller the leg becomes too strait, and the pig won't walk right and it can cause discomfort, which can lead I have to hit the pig with my pig stick. Where do I hit the pig? That has a simple answer you want to hit the to stress. If your pig stresses out it may lose weight so pig at the base of the neck where the fat has built up. I be careful. You want the back to be square and the know you want to know why I don't use whips. That belly to be somewhat round. You want it to have muscle but not too much because then it will look like has a simple answer as well; it's because if you don't know how to use a whip properly, you risk bruising the it's on steroids. You want the right amount of fat on it meat on the pig. That's why Berkshire and Hampshire too. Finally you want to make sure it's the breed you are so popular. Now there is a fine line between tapping want. too lightly and too hard. Like I said before, too hard or There are many breeds and each one has its specifics or you'll bruise the pig, too lightly, and you don't go traits. Durocs have a red tint to their skin. Hampshires anywhere. Once you've found that fine line you can train for about ten minutes. I recommend training are mainly black with a vertical white strip in the center of their backs. Bluebutt is a breed that has black three days a week twice a day depending on breed and gender. spots on its butt, and from far away these spots look blue. Berkshire is a black skinned breed and very popular. Yorkshire is a white skinned breed that sunburns easily. Now you know the breeds and what I had to look for when picking out a pig.

Gender is a big thing when it comes to hogs being stubborn and them peeing in your boots. Barrows are typically easier because they won’t pee in your boots. They also aren't as stubborn as gilts. For those who Now it's time to discuss care. The best way to care for don't know, gilt is a female pig that has not yet had a pig is first and most importantly the feed. You want a piglets, and a barrow is a male castrated pig. They are good starter feed so that your pigs too small or too big. prone to pooping on you, but it is easier to deal with. Gilts are way more stubborn than barrows because This last year we got a finisher and that seemed to work well. You want a feed that's high in carbohydrates they’re girls, and unless you've raised that gilt from and fat to start off with. That kind of feed is normally a birth, you don't mean anything to it. It just takes more work to gain their trust and make weight. So barrows finisher feed. Starter feeds tend to have less of what are the best way to go. Now when it comes to breed, I you want and more of what you don't. You don't just like Duroc and Bluebutt mix, they have that sense of need a good feed, you also need something to build muscle mass. A lot of people like to use Paylean to help calm, and they look red with black spots. If you want my opinion on pure breeds then you could go with build the muscle. Ok you have feed and Paylean. Now Hampshire or Bluebutt. Or, if you’re more concerned all you need is a watering system. The best way to set with looks, then Duroc is the breed to go with. Continued on next page...

It's Thursday and the fair finally opens and you can't wait because when you’re not on barn duty you can hang out on the midway with your BFF. Then you would normally have barn duty for about one to two hours. This happens throughout the day. After you’re done with the midway you can head to the main hall to see what they have. They also have stands on the way up to the main hall so bring at least a fifty. They always have the anime stand and the custom hats shirts and belts. You can find a sign vender and the Ok, it’s fair day. You spent four months preparing for dress tent. They always find something for the little this day to start a long week ahead. In the main hall they have isn't quiet at all, and your pig will lose some weight, demonstrations and the people with the tiny Bibles, but hopefully you have a good weight and some but my favorite is the people who sell belts, purses, earplugs. The midway closes pig. You start with the feet and work your way up. at 11:00 p.m. so you can sleep. For the next two days Now you have to find your pen. Once you’re there you the fair will close at midnight, but the barns close at have to get water. Then you can chill at the trailer nine. They have events at seven. until you have to feed. You have to keep constant So it's Saturday morning, and you have to put your water on them so they don't have heat stroke. Tuesday white's back on for market. You always want to hope morning is weigh in, which means up early to the pens for something over five dollars a pound. After you sell, to feed for those that won’t make weight. It also you take the buyer a gift, thank them, and answer any means you have to be up and ready to go so that you questions he or she may have. On Sunday morning can get your pig to the scale. Weigh-in ends at 2:00 you can go home after you feed and water. That is the p.m. so after that you can water and feed. Wednesday basic idea of how to raise a pig. is show and market ready day, which means up early and in your whites so that you can beat, what I call the final rush. For market ready you wait for someone to tell you to head ringside. Then you give the lady at the entrance your name and go to the holding pens. You wait for the judge to give you the Ok and then open the pen to the arena and let your pig run lose so you can shut the gate behind you. Then you find your hog and show him. You show a pig for market ready by keeping it at least three feet away from the judge and giving him an all around look of your pig and hope you don't get penned. For show you start out the same way. Once you’re in the arena for show you want to keep your eyes on the judge and then basically do what you did in market. The only difference is you want to get penned.

This is the End By: Madeline Parker There was a terrifying storm that fateful night. I couldn't see the storm because I was trapped in a cramped cabin, but I could hear it. The roar of the sea was deafening, and the booms of thunder filled my heart with fear. Outside, I could hear the captain shouting orders and cursing at the crew. Every now and then I would hear a scream as another crew member was crushed by the pieces of ship that came crashing down. I'm not sure how long this went on before the violent rocking of the ship knocked me off my feet and everything went black. When I woke up the next morning, there was an eerie silence. My head ached and my body complained as I tried to sit up. Blinding sunlight was breaking through a hole in the door of the cabin. I wondered how that had happened. Cautiously, I crawled through the hole, wary of what I might find. To my relief, all I saw were the bodies of the dead crew members. A thorough search of the ship told me that I was the only one left alive. I'm free, I thought, the pirates are dead. I'm free.

further inland. I kept panting, "Can't let him find me. Can't let him find me." I wept as I ran. The one sane part of my mind told me that I was being foolish. That the best chance I had was to keep still and wait to form a plan. I didn't listen to this logic. Terror dominated logic. I had seen what that horrid man did to people. I had watched him slaughter every member of my family. And I knew that though his ship and crew might be long gone, the Dread Pirate Roberts would leave no survivors. So I kept going. For how long, I'm not sure. I collapsed in exhaustion only when I had found what I considered a safe haven in a small cave. But I soon found that this was no safe haven. I had run for what felt like days only to fall at the feet of the man I was running from.

"I'm dead," I whispered over and over until panic coursed through my veins and I began to run. Crashing through bushes and dodging trees, I ran as fast as I could. My bare feet bled as I scraped them along the rough jungle floor, but I barely felt the pain. Adrenaline kept me going as I moved further and

"Si, this is true," he sighed. "But I was not always the fearsome Dread Pirate Roberts, you know."

This went on for a couple of weeks. I would wake up each morning, Roberts would assign me various chores throughout the day, and he would say, "Good night, I'll most likely kill you in the morning."

There was silence for a long time. Finally, I heard him stand up and come over to me, knife in hand. You can imagine how surprised I was when I - bracing myself for the pain - felt the ropes being cut and my hands were After a couple of weeks had passed, we were eating fish freed. by the campfire when Roberts said he was going to tell me a story. The story of how he became the Dread "I am going to let you go now, but you are going to help Pirate Roberts. me find firewood and some food," Roberts said, keeping a firm grip on my arm and holding the knife to my "First, my real name is not Roberts." throat. "Don't even think about running. After all, you said it yourself, I am the Dread Pirate Roberts." Shocker. "You're going to kill me no matter what I do," I spat back. "Why should I help you?"

"My name, is Inigo Montoya. I spent most of my life seeking revenge on the man who killed my father..."

"Because," he stated calmly, keeping the knife on my throat, "I am the one who will decide how painful your death will be. Be helpful and I just might kill you quickly." Then he let me go and sent me off to collect firewood.

Roberts talked for hours about who he used to be. Then he told me how the real Dread Pirate Roberts had retired many years before, and that he had many successors.

I began gathering fallen branches in a daze, wondering what was going on. Because it was dark, I had to feel the ground for sticks and it took me some time. I debated whether I should run or not. Of course I should run. How can I consider anything else? I knew I wasn't going to live either way, but I didn't want a slow, painful death. Just then, Roberts ordered me to come back. I returned slowly, still not sure that my decision to stay was the best one.

"I have only been the Dread Pirate Roberts for three years," Montoya told me. "But-"I stuttered, confused, "Why do you have to be called Roberts then?" Montoya looked at me skeptically, "Would you surrender to the Dread Pirate Inigo?" Good point.

When I arrived back at the cave, Roberts had shot a couple of birds and was motioning for me to bring the wood to build a fire. After cooking the birds, we ate in silence. I was surprised Roberts had bothered to feed me at all, if he was only going to kill me. When we had finished, Roberts bound my hands and said,

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked fearfully. Over the past two weeks I had grown to believe that I might actually survive this, if we could at least get off of this island. And as Montoya told me about how Roberts had passed on his title through the years, I grew more hopeful. "Aren't you just going to kill me?"

"Good night, I'll most likely kill you in the morning."

"Yes, I am. I just needed to get that story off my chest. Thank you for listening."

Comforting. I laid down in the dirt, racking my brain to come up with a plan so that I could escape. I fell asleep Without further ado, he took a knife to my throat. before I could think of a single way.
