GERMAN SHEPHERDS What kind of dog is the German Shepherd? The German Shepherd is one of the most admired and respected dogs in the world for its versatility, intelligence, and loyalty. There are many different types of German Shepherds depending on the environment they are raised in. Coat length and texture, color, and build are different depending on where they live. But all these types possess ruggedness, intelligence, soundness, and the ability to do specialized work.

WHAT WORK DO THEY DO? People know that German Shepherds are capable of doing multiple types of jobs. They can be used as military dogs, police dogs, search and rescue, personal protection, service help, airport dogs, and even therapy dogs. In both the police and the military, they are used to find criminals or even bombs. These dogs can do almost any type of job they are tasked with. They are also a good companion to have around whenever you are feeling lonely. Info from http:// www.germanshepherdguide.com/

MILITARY:Military dogs undergo vigorous training and face hardships no other dog could ever imagine facing, and they do so with heart and passion. These dogs are carefully selected and have proven themselves to be exactly what the breed was meant to be.

Having a German Shepherd Having a German Shepherd is awesome. They love to play and are always around because they love being with people and love meeting new people. Sometimes they can be a little stubborn, but it becomes worth it when you teach them different kinds of commands. I myself have one, and he is one of

POLICE:Due to their fantastic noses and natural detection and tracking ability, the German Shepherd dog excels at detection work. These brave, driven dogs are often put in the line of danger to protect and rescue their human handlers.

the most lovable and goofy dogs you could have. He always wakes up before everyone and bugs us until we wake up, too. He loves to run around and chase tennis balls until he doesn’t feel like giving it back. But in the end, he is just a great dog to have.

SERVICE: German Shepherds are great candidates for guide dogs, seizure alert dogs, mobility assistance and so much more. Stable temperament, strong nerves and the drive to work are important traits of a successful service dog.

The German Shepherd breed appeared late at the end of the 19th century in Germany and they were first introduced at a show in Hanover in 1882. They were not like the German shepherds we see today, though being rough coated, short tailed and rather resembling mongrels. The German Shepherd Dog as we now know didn't really appear until after the Second World War. The breed was actually created by the cross breeding of working sheep dogs from rural Germany by an ex cavalry officer called Max von Stephanitz whose aim was to create a working dog for herding which could trot for long periods. A breed standard was drawn up and the first breed show took place in 1899 following which the GSD (German Shepherd Dog) became firmly established across Germany. In 1906 the first dogs were exported to the USA .

Since then, the breed has grown immensely in popularity and is now one of the most popular pedigree breeds in the UK as a pet, as well as being the favorite working breed for many forces, especially the police. They are widely used for security purposes because of their strong protective instincts. Many people in the UK still call these dogs Alsatians which may partly be due to the fact that when they were first bred, the Alsace region of France was part of Germany where these dogs were very popular. In part it may also be due to the first and second world wars that the name Alsatian stuck as the word 'German' had a negative connotation. Some people still think that Alsatians are the traditional short coat black and tan dogs and that German Shepherds are the long coated dogs that have become popular all around the world.

- Marcus Mincey #2 – Schutzhund This sport was developed in the The German Shepherd Dog is one of 1900’s specifically for the German the few breeds who official name Shepherd Dog. According the United includes the word “dog.” Why? So Schutzhund Clubs of America, “It was people knew when you were talking designed to test the natural instincts of the breed and to weed out the dogs about a German shepherd human, that were either unstable or who tends the livestock, or the dog untrainable.” (www.germanshepherddog.com) helping him.

Fun Facts: #1

#3 – Mr. Popularity The GSD is the second most registered dog in the United States. This is most likely due in part to the breed’s diversity – they are popular as family, guard, performance, show, police, military, and service dogs. There isn’t much this dog can’t do. ELEPHANTS

Gigantic Ears that Melt Hearts Sarah Verhalen

Known for their large ears and sweet temperament, elephants are a popular animal throughout the world. There are two different types of elephants: the African and the Asian elephant. Being the largest land animals in the world, some elephants are not easily domesticated according to the National Geographic. Elephants’ ears may be acknowledged for their size and cuteness, but they are also essential for the animals’ survival. The National Geographic states that this species’ ears radiate heat in order to keep themselves cool. Their trunks, largely known for smelling,

breathing, trumpeting, drinking, and grabbing objects, also have two very small appendages on its end that are used for holding smaller items. With a love of water, elephants shower often by spraying water all over their bodies after siphoning it into their trunks. In order to protect their skin, they usually spatter dust over themselves after bathing. Male and female elephants both have tusks to dig for resources and rip off tree bark. However, only males use their tusks to fight each other. The ivory that composes their tusks is very valuable, and unfortunately some people kill elephants for their tusks. This action still occurs even

though it is illegal, and has caused the species to be endangered. Eating roots, grasses, fruit, and bark, elephants can consume up to 300 pounds of food in one day. These animals do not sleep very much, roaming vast areas searching for food instead. Female elephants tend to live with family in herds whereas the males do lone traveling. With their pregnancies lasting for almost 22 months, elephants have a longer pregnancy than any other mammal. Mothers typically give birth every 2-4 years, with their young

already weighing about 200 pounds and standing 3 feet tall.

Rabbits: The Netherland Miniature Lop

By Angelia Lewis

This breed of rabbits is relatively new and is descended from the 5irst dwarf lops, the Holland Lop. They were developed during the 1970s and were recognized by the British Rabbit Council in 1994 with a maximum weight of 1.6 kg (3lb 8oz). They are one of the smallest lop breeds. Appearance: Lifespan:

Females usually grow larger than the males, though the appearances are the same.

They live between 7-14 years and can live up to 18 years if properly cared for.

Their coat is dense and grows to a length that isn’t too long but not too short either. The legs and pads of their feet are well-furred to keep them warm.

Weight:

Their head is bold, broad, and well-developed. The pro5ile of the head is strongly carved with a good width between the eyes. They have full cheeks as well as a broad muzzle. The eyes are bold, bright, and large. The basal ridge of the ears are prominent across the top of the skull to form the crown.

Adults ideally should be between 1.2-1.5 kg (2lb 10oz – 3lb 5oz) with a maximum weight of 1.6 kg (3lb 8oz)

Their ears are broad, thick, and well-furred. Junior (under 5 months old) Rounded at the ends they are carried close to the have a maximum weight of 3 cheeks, giving a horseshoe like outline when viewed lb. from the front.

Rabbits: The Netherland Miniature Lop Proper care: -Use the same feed when feeding them. Changing their feed would result in some negative consequences. -The food bowl of the rabbit shouldn’t be empty. -Rabbits should have some hay as a part of their diet to help them digest food. -The rabbit needs plenty of water. -Careful with treats. -Do a lot of research. -A big cage and lots of room to move around. Clean the cage at LEAST once a week. -Lots of exercise and playing. -Grooming is a must, their fur gets matted and gets uncomfortable for them. -You can train a rabbit to stay inside and be litter box trained. -The ideal place for them to live is inside, or outside if they have shelter and are watched carefully. -Do not put them on their back A lot of people buy pets before doing the proper research. Before buying any Sources: pet, make sure to do the proper research. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_Lop http://www.huntershollandlops.com/bunny-care.html

Hedgehogs And All About Them! By: Elijah Pila

Hedgehogs! Who doesn't love these adorable little creatures? Hedgehogs can be found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and New Zealand, but there are no hedgehogs native to Australia or the Americas. The African Pigmy hedgehog is the most well know species and the one that is usually sold as a pet. The hedgehog is usually recognized by its spines which are hollow hairs that are made stiff by keratin. Hedgehogs are very quiet animals and make great pets. They are also very low maintenance and only need to be fed high quality dry cat food and be loved and played with.

Hedgehogs share a distant ancestry with shrews.

The hedgehog is a very quiet yet playful animal it won’t bark like a dog but will play with you and they will not tear up your furniture like a cat but they will lounge around like one.

When they feel threatened, they will curl up into a ball. Their name came from their foraging habits. They will also eat insects such as worms, snails, etc. Wild hedgehogs can hibernate, but not all do. Hedgehogs usually live apart from their own, but can create a bond with a human owner. Hedgehog’s quills start emerging a few hours after birth. The male hedgehogs do not help raise the babies. The babies are only raised for about 30 to 40 days until they are separated from their mother. There are 15 different species of hedgehogs in Europe, Asia, and Africa, but some have been introduced to New Zealand.

Turtles, Tortoises, and Sea Turtles BY: NICHOLE HORSFALL

A Turtle’s Shell Coloring of the shell. The coloring of a turtle’s shell may vary. Shells are commonly colored brown, black, or olive green. In some species, shells may have red, o r a n g e, ye l l o w, o r g r e y markings, often spots, lines, or irregular blotches. One of the most colorful turtles is the Eastern Painted Turtle, which includes a yellow plastron and a black or olive shell with red markings around the rim.

Design of the Shell. In most turtles, the outer layer of the shell is covered by horny scales called scute that are part of its outer skin. Scutes are made up of the fibrous protein keratin that also makes up the scales of other reptiles. These scutes overlap the seams between the shell bones and add strength to the shell. Some turtles do not have horny scutes. For example, the leatherback sea turtle and the soft-shelled turtles have shells covered with leathery skin instead.

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turtle

Sea turtles are almost entirely aquatic, except for when the females come to the beach to lay their eggs.

Diets Turtles Many species of turtles are commonly kept as pets, and just like their wild cousins, they eat a diverse range of foods. Commercial turtle pellets and fish pellets, as well as gut-loaded insects (bugs with nutrient-rich diets), earthworms and small fish are often sold as turtle food at pet stores. Tortoises A tortoise’s diet is composed mainly of safe grasses and weeds, leafy greens, with small amounts of hard vegetables and moist fruits. Sea Turtles Hawksbill: sponges, shrimp, and squid. Leatherback: jellyfish and other soft-shelled animals Green sea turtles: sea grasses, algae, and seaweed. Loggerhead: crab, jellyfish, mollusks, and shrimp. Flatbacks: seaweed, sea cucumber, crab, cuttlefish, shrimp, and soft corals.

Anatomy of a Turtle

Inside the Shell The upper shell of the turtle is called the carapace. The lower shell that encases the belly is called the plastron. The carapace and plastron are joined together on the turtle’s sides by bony structures called a bridge. The inner layer of a turtle’s shell is made up of about sixty bones that include portions of the backbone and the ribs, meaning the turtle cannot crawl out of its shell.

Turtle Feet Terrestrial tortoises have short, sturdy feet. Tortoises are famous for moving slowly,

in part because of their cumbersome shells, which restrict stride length. Amphibious turtles normally have limbs similar to those of tortoises, except the feet are webbed and often have long claws. Sea turtles are almost entirely aquatic and have flippers instead of feet.

Evolution of Turtles Paleontologists still have yet to identify the exact family of prehistoric reptiles that spawned modern turtles and tortoises. Lately, the bulk of the evidence points to an ancestral role for Eunotosaurus, a late Permian reptile whose wide, elongated ribs curved over its back (a striking resemblance of the hard shells of later turtles). By the early Jurassic period, about 200 million years ago, prehistoric turtles and tortoises were pretty much locked into their modern body plans, though there was still room for innovation. The most notable turtles of the Cretaceous period were a pair of marine giants, Archelon and Protostega both measuring about ten feet long from head to tail and weighing about two tons.

find prehistoric turtles that approached the size of this duo (This doesn't mean giant turtles weren't around in the intervening years, just that we haven't found much evidence). The one-ton, southern Asian Colossochelys (formerly classified as a species of Testudo) can pretty much be described as a plussized Galapagos tortoise, while the slightly smaller Meiolania from Australia improved on the basic turtle body plan with a spiked tail and a huge, weirdly armored head.

You have to fast-forward about 60 million years, to the Pleistocene epoch, to Source:http://dinosaurs.about.com/od/otherprehistoriclife/a/ Prehistoric-Turtles-The-Story-Of-Turtle-Evolution.htm

Sea Turtle Facts1) They are air breathing reptiles. 2) They have been on Earth for millions of years - since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. 3) Adult loggerheads can weigh from 250 - 400 lbs. 4) Hatchlings are only 2 inches long when they leave the nest. 5) Humans are the biggest threat to all sea turtle species. 6) Female sea turtles always return to the beach where they hatched to lay their eggs. 7) Loggerheads are listed as threatened and Green sea turtles are listed as endangered. 8) Beach lights can confuse turtle hatchlings, causing them to go toward the light source and away from the sea. 9) Green sea turtles are the only sea turtles that eat plants. 10) Loggerheads are named after their large head, which can be 10 inches wide.

Predators

Baby Turtles

Turtles as Pets

Freshwater turtles have lots of natural enemies, or predators. In the tropics they are eaten by crocodiles, alligators and caimans, which crunch through their shells and gulp them down. Some big cats such as jaguars will also bite through a turtle’s shell to get to the soft flesh inside of it. Even raccoons may gnaw at a turtle shell until they reach the turtle. Huge sea turtles also have predators. The main predators of sea turtles are sharks, which attack them and bite their legs off. Humans, dogs, seagulls, and ghost crabs prey on hatchlings. Tortoises have several natural predators, such as coyotes, badgers, kit foxes, golden eagles, greater roadrunners and ravens.

After an adult female sea turtle nests, she returns to the sea, leaving her nest and the eggs within it to develop on their own. The amount of time the egg takes to hatch is influenced by environmental conditions such as the temperature of the sand. The hatchlings do not have sex chromosomes so their gender is determined by the temperature within the nest. After 45 to 70 days

Turtles are often sold as low maintenance pets, but the truth is they need special care and a lot of room to grow. Turtles will not survive in a small dish with a plastic palm tree. They need the right lighting, temperature and water filtration system. If maintained properly, however, turtles can live for decades and grow to be a foot long. That's a lifetime responsibility that many people are not prepared to meet. If you get a turtle and then decide you can't care for the animal, there are not many options. Rescue groups are inundated with calls to take them. People sometimes turn turtles loose, thinking they are "freeing" them, but it's typically illegal to release turtles outdoors. Turtles let loose might die, and they might carry disease that kills other turtles. If they live, they can out-compete native species for food and habitat.

Source:http://www.whateats.com/

(depending on the species), the hatchlings begin to pip, or break out of their eggs. They then stay in their nest for a few days and absorb the yolk from the eggs, giving them their much needed energy to make the trip to the offshore waters.

Including costs of a miniature pig, they are a big responsibility like any animal. The mini pig has all of the usual domesticated pet tasks, feeding, watering, socializing, and so on. But one thing you probably aren’t familiar with is rooting. Rooting is a natural instinct for mini pigs in which they nuzzle and dig their snouts into whatever they can. Miniature pigs are very smart animals, they are just as smart as dogs! Also a common misconception with pigs is that they are very dirty, but in reality they are a very clean animal. As well as potty training and teaching your pig to walk with a harness, you can teach your pig to do various tricks.

History

Appearance & Diet The Red Panda (Ailurus Fulgens) is also called a lesser panda or a cat-bear. Though they share the same name as a panda, the red panda normally does not have much in common with the panda appearance wise. The average size they grow to is normally the same as a house cat, weighing at an average of 11 pounds with an average length of 2 feet. The Red Panda’s diet normally consists of: bamboo, berries, small leaves, and even bird eggs. Red pandas are quite diverse but primarily they eat bamboo.

Red Pandas are very solitary animals, so they live by themselves in trees. Red Pandas originate from Nepal. They currently live amongst themselves in the mountains of Nepal, Burma, and Central China. In 2004, an extinct red panda tooth was found in Tennessee. It was later confirmed that it dated all the way back to 4.5-7 million years ago! Possibly an earlier red panda could have existed in prehistoric North America. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Red_panda

Although national laws protect red pandas, they still have many threats, such as hunting and poaching, fragmentation, and deforestation which results in a loss of habitat. Due to these reasons, red pandas are on the verge of going extinct. About 40 percent of the red panda population has been decreased over the last 50 years.

The dragon we see the most today is the European dragon. They are described with wings and armored skin. They usually live in underground caves or rivers. They also have a 5iery-like aspect to their body. In some folklore like the opera Siegfried, dragon’s blood gives Siegfried the ability to talk with the forest birds. Dragon’s blood also has other abilities like protection and strength. Dragons usually are the villains to the hero; they also like to hoard jewels and gold in caves. In European mythology there are dragons called 5irebreathing dragons that have the ability to breathe 5ire. These dragons are considered evil and are usually portrayed as the villains, unlike Asian dragons who are more kind than other dragons. The European 5ire-breathing dragon looks like a normal modern day dragon. Russian dragons usually have three heads; the most famous one is a dragon name Zmey Gorynych, and he has two back walking claws, two front claws, and can breathe 5ire or spit 5ire.

In ancient India there was a dragon-like creature that had three heads and brought drought and was the enemy of Indra. This dragon-like creature was called Asura in Puranic mythology. Also in Assam India dragons were use for religious purpose. The dragons’ motifs were placed in the mukut in Noamghars. The dragons’ motifs were placed to guard the ghar. Dragons in Persian mythology were on the banner of war. They also believed that the baby of the dragons would be the same color as the mother’s eyes.

Chinese dragons usually are snake-like creatures with four legs. Dragons are used as the yang to the yin in feng huang. Chinese dragons usually have the power over water. They are also a symbol of good luck, power, and strength. Unlike European dragons, Chinese dragons are more good than evil. Japanese dragon myths are combined with other stories from China, India, and Korea. The Japanese dragon is based on the Chinese dragon the most. The Japanese dragon, like other Asian cultures has its main element over water. The dragon looks like a large, wingless serpent creature.
