RESOURCE CENTER: BEFORE & AFTER Here we have the beginning stage of the construction process!
by Sara Comarsh Junior • • •
The new school year is already in full swing, and what better way to have begun the year then with a beautiful, brand new resource center? Construction on the new facility began in January, and continued for a good eight months before the final product was finished. And so far, the students, parents, and staff are very impressed, and we are all very proud of the beautiful new building. “The story [of the new building] goes back a long way!” says Samuel Krouse, a teacher at CORE. “I was on committee from the beginning, traveling to San Diego, Modesto, Roseville, Redding, etc. After Chris Mahurin became our director, we established a committee to get even more serious about building our own facility. It was worth the wait! I am so happy with the result - our new Lakeside Resource Center!”
And here we have the finished product, a beautiful new learning center for students, parents, and teachers to enjoy!
Parents and students are pleased with the results, as well. Our beautiful new center will benefit the learning experience for not only the students, but the parents and teachers.
bigger classrooms, more teacher offices, bigger library, big multipurpose room, more parking, bigger restrooms, new science lab... shall I go on? It’s wonderful!”
“The new learning center is already enhancing the learning experience for students, parents, and teachers!” continues Mr. Krouse. “More room,
It truly is wonderful! The new year is already turning out excellently, and 2014 is going to be an amazing school year for CORE!
CONSTRUCTION: WHERE IT ALL BEGAN The construction process took place in early January, and finished in a long and promising eight months - and the results are better than we imagined!

THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG Anybody could tell you about the latest movies that are coming out, and anyone can mindlessly rant on and on about a film that they par8cularly enjoy, or one they personally dislike. However, this ar8cle isn’t some reckless and biased 8rade of an old film in which I showcase my own personal feelings; this is an honest-‐to-‐the-‐core review of a rive8ng film coming to theaters near you, December 13, 2013. You may have heard of it, it’s en8tled, The Hobbit: The Desola/on of Smaug. This par8cular film is a sequel to the cri8cally-‐acclaimed cinema8c adventure, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The second enthralling installment follows the events of the previous film, in which the hobbit and our heroic

protagonist, Bilbo Baggins, travels with the great wizard Gandalf and is accompanied by thirteen dwarves. This tes8ng trek, led by Thorin Oakenshield, into the Kingdom of Erebor, takes the group through such places as Mirkwood, Esgaroth, and Dale to combat with the fierce and ferocious dragon, Smaug. Now, if the plot hasn’t already grabbed your aTen8on, then maybe this plethora of highly talented and appreciated actors will. Empire Award-‐winning actor Orlando Bloom stars as Legolas, as you may have seen in the previous Lord of the Rings movies, and Lost
actress Evangeline Lilly stars as Tauriel, the female elf from Mirkwood. Other actors such as Mar8n Freeman, Luke Evans, and Ian McKellen also star in what is said to be one of the last 2013 blockbusters. But with all this aside, the film is said to be a runaway success, and an uproarious sequel to the already fantas8c Hobbit series. And in my own personal opinion, I would highly advise any ac8on-‐seeking and avid movie-‐goer teen, to immerse themselves in this enchan8ng tale known as, The Hobbit: The Desola/on of Smaug.

Con: Cyberbullying has been most common on social networking sites and has a higher rate in teens committing suicide.
Why Social Networking is so Widespread Most people use social networking to stay connected to close friends and family. Some people go on social networking sites to find long lost friends and others go on social networking simply because they’re bored. Overall, social networking sites are known to influence many people, and I believe that in the future they will still influence many more people’s lives as technology improves.

Music is an important part of a student’s education. Music is known to have a positive effect on a student’s academic growth. This year at Camptonville Academy, two music classes are being taught by Mrs. Jeanne McClard. The two classes are Elementary Classroom Music for Kindergarten through third grade and Choir for fourth through eighth grade. Mrs. McClard is teaching her younger students proper enunciation and clarity of speech, to read and memorize lyrics, practice counting beats and measures, proper posture, and breathe control. Older students are learning singing techniques, music theory, music history, and performance protocol. Jeanne McClard has been teaching for 25 years. She taught 23 years with Yuba City Unified School District and is now teaching her second year at Camptonville. Mrs. McClard began her career as an elementary teacher. She loved to sing and play the piano so much that she started to share her love of music with her students. She became a music teacher and taught at several schools in the district. After 23 years she retired from the district but missed teaching music and the kids. When asked how she came to teach at Camptonville, she said that God led her. One day at the Racquet Club, she happened upon the parents of a former student of hers from Barry School. The parents informed her that Camptonville might be an opportunity for her to continue teaching music. She has enjoyed it ever since.

It’s easy to get distracted. Though, I’m not talking about the type of distracted when you are not paying attention when someone talks to you. When you look up, look up high and stare into the night sky filled with stars and light, you see clarity. You can really see yourself as how you truly are; infinitely small and somehow insignificant. The sky, the sun, the moon, the ocean surrounding you brings you to reality and helps you keep your place in life. It always taught me humility; away helped me maintain my focus and not let myself get

distracted from life’s joys. The power of these creations reminded me of my promise to my Creator, reminded me how much I owed him, My insignificance made me realize that all my focus was to him. If I even had the temptation to fail, I would look up into the sky, for my Creator is there somewhere. What was it then that made me loose my focus? My father, my clan, the tribes, everyone was dependent on me to fulfill my promise. I had so much faith in myself, so much confidence that I could do it, that I could fulfill my destiny, but that was not the case.
My name is Zeekhe, firstborn and only daughter of my father; tribe leader of our clan. My world is hidden from all the other worlds in this universe. We are a world within a world. It has always been difficult for me to assimilate this truth, but for us our islands mean our life. This is also the case of the Sibs: sworn enemies of the Seven Tribes. Even

“Do you remember Zee what those stars mean,” my father would say. “Yes, Ahn,” my 3 year old self would say, “they mean they are sad” “Sad? Why do stars mean sadness to you?” He replied with amazement and laughter in his voice. “Because stars twinkle Ahn. Peoples eyes twinkle when they are sad.” Even though I was not looking at my father, I could feel his stare piercing into my little head. “Zeekhe, look at me. Stars don’t mean sadness. Stars mean guidance. Look up into the sky and you will find guidance within the stars.” I looked up to the starry night sky. It was a cold night and there was a bitter chill in the dark that never really left me, even now. I didn’t understand then why this subject was so important to him. For me the stars were “so pretty!” But for my father, signs were found in everything around us: the sun, the stars, the wind, the birds and animals, even the different ways we would act each day. As leader of our clan I could see how this was necessary, especially the trait of guidance. Very little I learned how to be responsible for every single little thing I did. There was so much pressure for me as child of heaven, or so they would call me having a good face. Beauty was never important to me not even when I turned 17, when I became “beautifully dangerous.” No, for me the only thing that was truly important was my father and his honor. As the only daughter of his, I became his pride and failing him was not acceptable. He taught me not only to read the signs in the heavens and on earth but in people as well. That was the only thing that I became good at; actually that was the only thing that saved my life so many times. As the oldest of my family, I was the leaser. As firstborn and only daughter of the Ahn I was an example So everything I did, people would notice. I seriously mean everything, even how I ate my food and how I ate my food and how I slept. That never really seemed to bother me until I turned 15. My mind had not only caught on to how tough my leadership was to be show but how much I had to take care of when I became Ahn, I’v heard stories of empires and nations with more than just a thousands of people ruled by one soul. I could not and would not do such a thing. I heard the sound of our drums one night. It was a very warm and humid summer night and as every night I was swimming in the water. You cannot do this during the winter for the water so practically frozen, but in the sumer, if it was so warm, so war, as a mothers embrace. Was I scared of the sea? No, not at all. For me, the sea was my mother. Se would envelop me with warmth, caresses and stories. It taught me lessons and would bring me blessings. The sea was my friend; my true and only friend I had then. So when those drums began to beat for our monthly ceremony, Yuik, my brother at age 14 at the time, knew exactly where to find me. “Zee! You have better hearing among all of us, can you not hear the drums?!” he said matter-a-factly. “Gosh!” “Calm down Yu,” I said still floating on my back, “ you know Ahn doesn’t start talking until the entire clan is assembled.” “The entire clan IS assembled! Gods Zeekhe you are so blind and into your own world that you don’t think about anyone but yourself. Not even Ahn.” “God Yu,” I stammer out of the water and go up into Yuik’s face, “I do think about everyone, even you.” I race past him so fast, my long hair slaps his face. “Ugh!” I hear him say. By the time I get to the ceremony the fire is as big as my tent and everyone is beating their drums. I try to be discreet, but of course, I am not invisible nor quiet for that matter. I stepped on a leaf-a leaf!-and the entire assembly turned to look at me, and all together the drums cease. “She’s here!” Ahn shouted out from the other side of the fire. This was not going to be a good moment for me. “Ciirz!” Ahn pointed to a middle aged women with long braids in front of her face, not once taking his eyes of me. “She’s a daughter of the wild,” her voice began to get louder. “She is wild and cannot be tamed! You have an animal in your clan Ahn!” “Anye!” This time he pointed to a women of 20 with flowers in her hair but eyes the color of snow. “She is dishonor to you now. She’s selfish and cruel. She is in need of a lesson Ahn.” OK, I’m thinking, I come in late once and people point out my life flaws! What is this? “Zeekhe!” He points to me expecting me to humiliate myself in front of the assembly, but I decide not to. “ I am late Ahn,” I say with the strongest and calmest voice I could muster. Ahn puts down his hand calmly. His face is expressionless. But I can see through his eyes and they are dagger that could kill. “Lehneh clan: We have in our hands trouble. A child of the wild, but we can tame this animal. She needs to be taught a lesson. She will be the Protector of the 8th Island!” Gasps. That is all I can hear. No cheering, no applause, just gasps. I knew I was wild and probably even selfish but I was just a girl and too young to e given that task. Even the clan knew that. “It has been agreed among the Seven Tribes that the Lehneh clan will give the new heir ad Protector to the 8th island. Zeekhe has been chosen. She will be accompanied by 3 men eery rear to her journey to the 8th island, until she turns 18, she then will be going alone. Of course she needs to agree willingly,” my father then turned his head towards me, “but let it be known to you that this was always to be your destiny.” I was dazed. I could not move nor breath. My head spun trying to assimilate everything my father was saying. Then it hit me. This was my chance to finally be free without anybody’s eyes on me. My chance to prove my will to live and my loyalty to my people. I was not a bad child, but I needed to be taught a lesson. Well, I was ready to learn. I walked u to my father, looked him into those dagger wyes and smiled. I took out my knife in my ankle, cut the palm of my hand and let it drip on the ground. It stung so bad but I had to get used to it, my future life would bring more bloodshed. My father took my dagger and did as I did. He lifted his hand and I put mine against his. The mixture of our bloods dipping down into the ground and sizzling next to the fire. This time the entire assembly shouted and with one beat of their drums, it was over. I was left alone with the dying fire, a cut hand and a smile on my face. This was the beginning of something different, of a new life and I couldn’t be happier.

ABOUT AUDREY, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S 1961
Breakfast at Tiffany’s! Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) a young New York socialite, becomes interested in the young man next door. This movie is a romantic comedy -Wikipedia mentions- where Hepburn portrays as the eccentric, naive, cafe society girl. She is generally considered to be the most memorable, and identifiable actress. Hepburn regarded it as one of her most challenging roles, since she was an Introvert, required to play an Extrovert. Hepburn’s performance of it’s theme song “Moon River” helped composer “Henry Mancini” and lyricist “Johnny Mercer” win an Oscar for best song. In 2012, the filmed was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in The National Film Registry.
Roman Holiday
1953
IMDB says: Aa a bored and sheltered princess named Anna, Audrey Hepburn escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome.
ROMAN HOLIDAY. here we see Hepburn on the set of Roman Holiday, getting ready while wearing a now vintage Pettit coat and some, might I say, adorable sunglasses.
WAR AND PEACE. as we notice here a photo of Hepburn in WAR AND PEACE looking, as usual, made of perfection. everyone else knows how beautiful she is indeed, she never thought she was, which is very sad to think about.

SABRINA. here Audrey stands in a now vintage dress -which wasn’t at that time- for her starring role Sabrina. in the beginning of the film she is portrayed as very timid, shy, and sad but then continues to become more radiant.
