CONTENTS PORTFOLIO OF YANG YIYI Architecture is a journey and a venture. It is not a religion. Yet you keep faith in it. It is the day-dreaming and explorationof the new. Yet you cherish your memory. It is about the realization and fulfillment. Yet you are always enthusiastic about its being fictional. The distance from the real life. Isn’t this the poetry we are always chasing after? Half-insanity, half rationality, we are living on either side but not in between.

Masterplan

Masterplan Plaza Nature

Located in the center of Strasbourg, the project is a mix of housing, office use and hotels. Based on the various regulations and limits according to the French authority, a series of experiments have been done before we reaches the concept of 'green sofa'. The sofa has a good location, with a canal ending right in front and a big plaza where people meet and relax. The interface of the building withe the city is neutralized with vegetations on the facade and on the plaza: the green curtain and the green carpet. Site location

Conceptual Development

The project is part of the big urban planning and architecture competition. Here only the museum part is explained where I am mostly involved. The museum project is considered the opportunity to transform the chaotic local urban condition and to contribute to the public urban life. At the same time, the collections of the museum are mostly from the archaeology excavation done on the same site.

The body of the museum is half floating over the void and a series of domes will grow inside the volume and adapted to the different use of space in the museum. In the end, the roof will provide a spectacular terrace to overlook the beautiful Istanbul harbour. The huge flat roof is also used as the place to collect solar energy.

Reclaiming Amsterdam 2012 / TU DELFT / Graduation Thesis / Amsterdam, The Netherlands In the recent development, Amsterdam is proud of its historic and low-density urban quality, which has successfully helped the city to build its reputation all over the world. Does it really provide us a perfect model of city development? As is in all other cities, the recent Capitalist urban development in Amsterdam cannot avoid being driven by other movitation than profitablity. In the process of this development, the interests of the opposite side of the developper are largely ignored and what we witness is the ridiculous city slogan: 'I amsterdam', the cunning logic of which conceals its discriminative

nature in favour of the wealth and worst of all, since the city has been for long considered one of the most equalitarian and democratic cities, the problem is hardly raised. My design doesn't aim to provide an ultimate answer but instead want to make obvious this conflict and contrast it with the current attitude of the urban development of the society.

Site Center and border

Reflection and Operation The Capitalist slogan 'I amsterdam' is converted into an immensive monument and provides the possiblity to be read from both layers of its meanings depending upon the position one takes. It symbolically stands at the border where the morphologic change happens in the city. In fact, it is also where the social composition start to change. A conflict visualized. Simple as Venturi once said, an monument could be merely a decorated shed. By detaching the decoration and the function, the gigantic billboard-like building functions as a place where the excluded could still enjoy their lives.

Program Two Programs in One

Sequences The action of wrapping

The design explores the possiblity to record our daily experience of the physical environment beyond our human body and to develop it correspondently into a building.

The final result, ‘the theatrical space’, therefore, indicates not only the function of the space but the way how architecture and the space it contains communicate with people.

Observatory tower

Sketch by Isozaki Arata A project that strives to conceal the huge program of the Wetland museum underneath the natural landscape. A series of program and space study have been conducted over the exhibition circulation and its spatial qualtiy. Four key elements are designed in a integrated way to achieve sustainability in the architecture: 1. The solar panels over the observatory tower collects solar energy and powers the water system and the rest of the building. 2. Light wells designed for introducing lights and indoor ventilation. 3. The water treatment equipment powered by the solar energy from the tower will release micro-bubble in the water to improve the quality of the water in the river 4. Green facade and green roof help to save the energy consumption in winter and summer and provide an accomodating atmosphere.

Schematic Design The project underwent through some major changes due to the change in program and budget. However, the key characteristics of the building have been maintained and developed further: rationalization of the structural system of the observatory tower, diversification of the plants on the green roof and the integration of the different circulation into one big light-well hall.

Development Design The whole project is broken down to different basic aspects in order to examine the details of the project. Structure: the buildings adopts a combination of loadbearing wall system together with beam-colomn system in order to reduce the amount of steel. However, some part of the building requires difficult 3D study due to the complexity of the surface. Green roof: different soil depth in different part according to the height of the vegetations. This in turn affects the design of the structure. Details: staircases, interiors, details of the pavemnt

Traditional watertownship

Recent Development The project is adjacent to the old water township of Zhujiajiao. However, the new masterplan wanted to double the size of the old water township. This means simple mimicking of the old water town without regard to the new scale will definitely fail. The project is an attempt to introduce a new context that is not disconnected from the existing context. From introducing the self-similar Ammann tiling, a series of experiemts have been conducted, aiming at making a modern intepretation of the genius loci of the township with reference to its rich history and tradition. The deisgn of the masterplan is also enhanced by the concrete design of the major structure of the infrastucture as well as the neighbouring landscape.

The project provides an alternative way to undertand the vernacular culture and urban expansion. It is also an exercise to innovate without losing the link to the past.
