Children's Art Project - Holiday 2008

Page 1

What does Santa put in your stocking? An apple or tangerine…a chocolate version of the jolly elf himself…a few small treasures? Young patients from the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center receive a stocking full of treats that last a whole year -- from you and the Children’s Art Project. This is how we fill their stockings:

Instructions on How To Stuff a Stocking 1. Start with a very large stocking – magical, bottomless style is preferred. 2. Open stocking and fill toe with small packages from items in List A. 3. Sprinkle in a layer of tender loving care (TLC) mixed with an assortment of nuts and hard candy. 4. Add several packages from List B. 5. Add more of the TLC, nuts and candy mixture. 6. Continue to alternate mixture of the best medical care available: caring nurses, brilliant doctors, concerned child life workers, great teachers, and thoughtful volunteers. 7. Hang stocking on the mantle. Note: Very strong stocking holder is recommended. This stocking is heavy!

Jacey Bagwell’s stocking is already full! She is an adventurous, energetic young lady with many talents and interests. Before her diagnosis of osteosarcoma (bone cancer), Jacey was involved in softball, dancing and running. She hopes to get back to those activities when she is off treatment. She may also want to get back to her career as a performer — in first grade, she sang a solo, “Come and Buy Balloons,” in a school production. Jacey and her attending physician, Dr. Dennis Hughes, have wrapped up several things together. The first was to treat her osteosarcoma with a limb salvage instead of an amputation — a metal rod replaced the affected bone in her leg. The rod can be lengthened as she grows. This ingenious solution is working very well for Jacey. They also collaborated on a field trip to Minute Maid Park in September, 2007. Jacey and Dr. Hughes had the rare privilege of going out on the field before a Houston Astros game! Jacey’s caring spirit also showed up while she was being treated. Although she is shy, she has a big heart and likes to do things for others, including the other pediatric patients. A native of Pauline, South Carolina, Jacey, her mother Holly and younger brother Lawson spent quite a bit of time in Houston. Her father, Jay, stayed in close touch by phone -- he had to stay in South Carolina. They have returned home, but will continue to check in with the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center to assess her progress. Jacey will be a third grader this year, able to slip right back into school with her peers. Jacey has learned to make lemonade from lemons. To prove that point, a bright yellow T-shirt was designed just for her. In turquoise letters, the front of the shirt said, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” On the back is the drawing of a lemonade stand titled, “A Stand for Jacey.” With great support from friends and family, Jacey’s life will be filled with many gifts!

Research to learn more about cancer is what sets The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center apart from others. Often, that research takes the form of a clinical trial.

What are clinical trials and why are they important? Clinical trials are studies involving people who volunteer to participate in research to find better ways to prevent, diagnose or treat a disease. Many of today’s standard cancer treatments — treatments that are accepted and widely used by medical experts — are based on the results of previous clinical trials. Thanks to these studies, many advances in medical science have been made.

A new treatment or drug is generally tested in three or four phases. The trial begins with a small number of people to determine the safety of a new treatment. Two other phases add more knowledge, determining whether a certain kind of cancer responds to a new treatment and whether a new treatment is better than the existing standard treatment. A fourth phase may study how effective a drug or procedure is over a long period of time.

How can you learn more about clinical trials? • Ask your doctor. • Go online to www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials for information or call the National Cancer Institute’s Cancer Information Service at 800-422-6237 to speak with a trained information specialist. • Go online to www.mdanderson.org and click on “Clinical Trials.” • Call askMDAnderson at 877-632-6789 to speak with a trained health information specialist or to request a free copy of “Clinical Trials at M. D. Anderson.”

It’s very easy to fill Shae Jester’s stocking! She is a very feminine little girl, and she loves to dress up. Her grandmother buys the smallest size high heels she can find at discount stores so Shae can wear them with her assortment of costumes and old jewelry. She dances to Hannah Montana, her favorite star, and she loves her new dog Bailey, a Black Lab, and her cat, Mooshie. You can also give her things for her baby dolls. She takes very good care of all of them. At night they have to be laid out perfectly and covered with little blankets. This may sound like an idyllic young life, but Shae and her family have also battled cancer. In the summer of 2007, her family was preparing to move from Blanco, Texas to Evanston, Wyoming. Shae’s dad is a wildlife biologist, and he had been hired by the Nature Conservancy of Wyoming. At the going away party the night before they left Texas, three-year old Shae was very sick. Her leg began hurting, and that ache grew into an excruciating pain. The move to Wyoming had to be delayed until mom, dad and big sister Shelby could find out what was wrong with Shae. It was quickly discovered that she had neuroblastoma—a tumor under her right kidney was pushing on her spine and causing the pain in her leg. Surgery removed 90% of the tumor and was followed by chemotherapy. Her hair and eyelashes disappeared during the chemo. Much to her mother’s relief, hair and thick, long eyelashes have reappeared! Dad had to go on to Wyoming while mom and Shelby moved in with family in Houston for Shae’s treatment. During her treatment at the Children’s Cancer Hospital at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Shae connected with her primary physician, Dr. Peter Zage, clinic nurse Colette Badeaux, nurse practitioner Peg Parmeter, and Cad Willeford, one of the child life specialists at the Children’s Cancer Hospital. She helped nurses flush a port (the area where chemotherapy connects to the patient), pulled off band-aids and helped with other simple “medical” tasks. Shae is already talking about being a nurse when she grows up. In the meantime, she is a busy young lady. She loves to do yoga with her grandmother, saying “moo” instead of “ohm” when they are meditating! Let’s hope that the rest of all the packages life gives to Shae will be filled with good health, happiness and success!
