The seven deadly sins: lust, greed, avarice, jealousy, and all the rest. They don’t have a place in your life when you’re walking towards another person as another creator who you respect and love.

40 Pilgrims to the Field of the Stars A Look Ahead at the Spain Trip

by Marcos Cajina

The road to Finisterre could be found from anywhere in Europe by looking at the stars of the Milky Way. People believed that the world ended there and that the Atlantic Ocean was “the tomb of the sun.” Possibly these geographical and astronomical facts helped reinforce the magnetism that the Jacobean route has left in millions of pilgrims who walked its trails.

I appeared to have been in the “bubble” of what seemed to be a spiritual action. Of course, I would have preferred to receive the blessing in a considerably gentler way, but there is no greater romance than falling in love with what is.

20 God’s Calling to Love by John Morton, DSS

No matter what attitude we form in relationship to the polarities we find in the world, we are still called upon to make choices. In each moment, we are always making a choice to be more loving or more unloving. The source of loving is inexhaustible.

et’s take a hard look at our love pattern, and the area of responsibility in interpersonal relationships. Someone once said to me, “You talk about this divine love, this divine Light. Well, what are you doing with it? Why don’t you take it and direct it towards somebody and share it with them?” They weren’t talking about the personal love, because often we let that get in the way. They were talking about the divine love. What if we take the Light, the Holy Spirit, and look at a person objectively and say, “What are this person’s needs and wants? What do they really need?” Sometimes a mother looks at her son who is driving the car at sixteen or seventeen, and when he comes in, she asks, “Where you been?” He says, “Out.” Or she says, “Where are you

going tonight?” He says, “Out.” “Who are you going with?” “My friends.” “Where?” “Just around.” This is great communication, isn’t it? Maybe if the process of interrogation isn’t so intensified, you can share something with people in your family at a time when they’re not going somewhere. I’m not talking about, “How are you doing? How’s the school coming? How’s your homework coming? How’s

the job coming?” All of that is interrogation. It’s continual questioning, and you start getting very trite, concise answers that put you off. As they say, “It gets my old lady—or my old man—off my back.” We might look at the relationship a little differently, and start to find out what they are interested in and what they are doing. What does a fourteen-year-old girl start looking

forward to at fourteen? What does a sevenyear-old boy start looking at, at that age? We don’t look at what we think they should be doing—that’s the suffocating love. The kind of love that I’m talking about is a love where we look, and watch, and communicate. We sometimes forget that the five-year-old is now twelve. We had better start treating them like twelve. And when the twelveyear-old is now fourteen or fifteen years old, we’d better start treating them like they’re fourteen or fifteen years old, or they’re going to go someplace else. This isn’t casting rocks or stones. This is just a statement that we must look.

“Live right

now to your highest capability and let that capability be an inspiration. . .”

Probably right around the age of ten and younger, children need a mother and father. But after that, they could use an older friend. If you’ve been training them and preparing them for the lessons of life, an older friend can instill in them the confidence that they need in order to take those lessons and use them. But too often, father and mother act as the fearful God who will step in a little too hard. You might say, “Well, what do we do about it? I’ve done this for the last twenty years with all my children. What do I do now?” One thing you can do is close the doors on the past, because the past is gone, and you can’t do a thing about it. You can start living right now. You’ve heard the phrase in the movies, “I’m going to make it up to you starting right now.” You don’t have to make it up to them because that’s an impossibility. But live right now to your highest capability and let that capability be an inspiration. I have a lot of people in seminars say, “Oh John-Roger, I go out and just tell everybody about the Light

and how wonderful and great you are.” And I say, “Don’t do that.” They say, “Well, what am I supposed to do?” I say, “Don’t tell them anything. Go out and live the Light. Let your actions and your love speak the words for you because it will say more than your adjectives can ever say.” When we don’t enter into relationships with this openness and responsibility, we reap the harvest. We see it in our country when different groups—black, white, Asian, Mexican, Native American—stand up and start saying, “What about me? What do I really need, what do I really want?” Every person is “me,” and I am every person. If I neglect myself, I neglect everyone. And if I come into balance with myself, I come into balance with everyone with whom I come into any type of contact. And after that they should say, “Thanks for just doing one little thing.” It might be, “Thank you for irritating me enough that I looked,

Some people can’t stand to hear this. They can’t take it. And there’s the old expression, “The things that we don’t understand, we fear. And the things we fear we hate.” Whenever we find hate has an entrance into us, there’s something in us that needs an awakening. We’ve got to wake up and see who’s at the door. We have to see what our true self is letting through, and how we’re perceiving the environment. This love that we’re expressing in the human form is a very transient type of love. The

sexual level will last a year. If you say, “I love to look at you,” that’s a physical love, and that can probably last two or three years, or until one person goes out of balance physically. A lot of the emotional love is, “We’re married for the children’s sake. Let’s make the most out of it until they’re old enough to go.” Then there is the love where we love to talk to people, and this type of love relationship can last a lifetime. Coupled with the physical, emotional and sexual, we have a beautiful marriage. But when the Holy Spirit comes in, and we rise to these occasions of sharing and knowing and gathering, then you can sit in the room with your loved one

and they might not say a word. One may be busy reading a paper and the other one’s knitting, and yet there’s this contentment within you. Or it could be while one’s in the restroom and the other is busy cooking, there’s that love in there no matter what they’re doing. And they get a little hassled, but then this love comes creeping through and it balances the action. That’s the Spirit. That’s the Light of our consciousness opening and unfolding towards each other.

@msiaorg

As we unfold towards each other, we unfold towards the Supreme Light. You must love your neighbors as yourself. When you’ve done this, you’ve loved the God source within them. And if you can love your own God source and your neighbor’s God source, then you are indeed walking in the high Light of the Holy Spirit. If you can’t, and you’ve got your emotions in there, then you’re working with what we call the negative forces of light. Those are the force fields that try to keep us held

New Day Herald 17

down on the planet. So it’s very easy to talk about our neighbors, to judge, to condemn, to criticize, to find fault, and to enter into what is referred to as the seven deadly sins: lust, greed, avarice, jealousy, and all the rest. They don’t have a place in your life when you’re walking towards another person as another creator whom you respect and love. And when we come into those close, intimate, conjugal relationships with them, we are sharing the highest part that we can share. It’s the exchanging of spiritual energy and the opening of the phychic centers into our God source within, into the true self. People will see somebody and they’ll say, “I love that person. I don’t know why, but I love them.” They see something there that no one else can see. You say, “What can you see in that person? They’re ugly.” They say, “Oh you’re looking at the physical. I’ve never seen the physical.” They’re not the handsomest one physically, but there’s some beauty there. They sometimes explain it by saying, “They’re tender,” or, “They care.” There’s something that’s relating to this person in the Light, and the Light of this person’s consciousness pulls them into a balance.

“. . .The exchanging

of spiritual energy and the opening of the phychic centers into our God source within, into the true self. ”

So when you’re with someone you love, you might just question yourself: Do I love you because I love you, or do I love you because of the way you love me?

God’s Calli by

John Morton

This world is designed to bring lessons and not necessarily comfortable ones.

Each lesson presents an opportunity to experience and express the loving that is already present. That is not a secret or even a revelation. At some point, we will know that loving is always present. Even if we do not want to admit it to ourselves, even if we do many things to deny it, we will know loving is present.

At times, this world can appear cold, hostile, tyrannical, or alien. At some point, we may begin forming an attitude that could be called unloving. When we form an attitude of unloving toward anything or anyone, we are actually forming that attitude toward ourselves. One of the ways our unloving can be recognized is as a hardness that comes into our consciousness. As hardness comes into our being, we can become callous and insensitive. As we become more insensitive, our perceptions portray a harsh and painful world. It then becomes easier to adopt an attitude toward the world resulting in our experiencing and in turn expressing more harshness, negativity, and pain.

ing to Love “N o matter how dark or how cloudy or stormy it is, the sunlight gets through and touches us. . .

John Morton at PAT 8, Asilomar, December, 2016 @msiaorg

New Day Herald 21

Occasionally a person can go all the way through their life gradually becoming more hardened and harsh as a way of dealing with the world. That is very rare because usually somewhere along the way, there is a visitation, a moment. No matter how dark or how cloudy or stormy it is, the sunlight gets through and touches us, reminding us that there is more to this world than the darkness, harshness, or storms. In our process of dealing with the world, we play two sides. One side we refer to as the negative, painful, or disturbing. The other side is the loving, light, and the beauty. As we learn to play this game between the two sides, we realize that one is more of our true nature. Perhaps we see it as more of the way we would like to be. In other words, we can look upon ourselves as actually being unloving, dark, or no good. We can still realize, however, that underneath our negative picture of ourselves is the desire to be good because that is who we truly are. No matter what attitude we form in relationship to the polarities we find in the world, we are still called upon to make

22 New Day Herald

choices. In each moment, we are always making a choice to be more loving or more unloving. The source of loving is inexhaustible. There is no way we can ever exhaust the opportunity to be more loving. Each situation in our lives presents a challenge and an opportunity to choose into the Light. There is something magnificent in every aspect of the creation. Choose to love more this day. Like the song, “I’m going to love more this day. I’m going to give more than I take. I’m going to live much more for the sake of living love.” I see it coming down to real, simple things like making each place better than you found it. Are you doing something to lift? Maybe right now it is more important that you be lifted, that you be nurtured, that you take time to withdraw so you can restore yourself. If you are off and thinking, “I am off so anything I do, say, even think right now, is problematic. It is magnetized into the negative,” then it may be time to stop, take time to go inside to restore yourself in your true loving nature.

This world’s magnetism is potent.

It is a potent illusion. It is a potent image. Can you see through it? We need to take ourself into the high consciousness if we are going to see this world for what it is and to see the truth of it.

is a day of glory. That is a blessing. It may not feel like it. You may feel confused, disoriented or shut down. But it’s actually a movement forward. Something is going on for the good as you are waking up.

When we come into the Spirit, it is fully revealed. There are no secrets. There is nothing hiding. It is all known. When we do that, we have transformation. Our doubts don’t make it. They get burned up along the way. What makes it is the purer part which can involve a purification process, a cleansing and clearing of fears and negative thinking.

The first law of Spirit is trust in God which means acceptance. Faith in God is in acceptance. Go towards acceptance with all you’ve got. Maybe you are there a while because you were not in acceptance. Maybe you are in process right now of getting to acceptance. So keep trust and acceptance as your intention.

When you are disturbed or upset, that’s a perfect time to go into the Spirit. When we do, amazing things occur. Choose to accept, which is a way of expressing, “I trust in the Lord.” You then gain understanding. Understanding starts with letting go. It starts with releasing yourself from, “I want it this way. I don’t want it that way.” Choose to come into neutrality by letting go. The understanding will follow. My faith and trust tell me there is something perfect and good in everything. You may not always be conscious of what it is, but make it your intention to be. You can choose, “I’m going to go to where I can have the good revealed in my consciousness.” That’s being in cooperation. If you want that, you are in cooperation with how it works spiritually. Then the understanding follows. It is like a virtue that rewards you by its own nature. If you are holding a foundation of false ideas, ideals or images, it will tumble and fall down. Those things have to come down eventually. When we are disillusioned, that @msiaorg

One thing you can’t let go of is the love. If you do, you will experience hurt. That is no surprise. If you shut down the love, it hurts. It is supposed to. That’s good. Why? It’s not a punishment but an awakening. Holding back your love does not work, so get back to the loving. If you are going to love somebody else, the love has to go through you. That is why it is wise to be around people where loving comes easily, particularly to you. What good is it to be around people who withhold, deny or make all kinds of conditions about loving you? The blessing is they can teach you that you can love yourself regardless. You don’t need others to be loving you for you to be loving of yourself. Love where you are. Love where you stand. Love your grieving and your wounds. Love your fears by not joining and reinforcing them. Don’t get into fear, discouragement or depression as the order of the day. Your life is not meant for that. It tends to keep you out of the field where the soul is playing which is at a high rate. Be bright, be bold, be beautiful. These are qualities of the soul. Continue article New Day Herald 25

John-Roger made a distinction that will is with God, and God’s will is done.

It has an absoluteness in it. That is tremendously in our favor because we are part of that absoluteness. God’s will is done in an absolute perfection. Yet, we get a choice.

tivity on top or do one wrong decision with another wrong decision. Don’t go into thinking, “What is the use?” That is not a good attitude. That attitude is not going to help.

When you are aware of going into fear, you can change your approach. There is a basic, real simple opportunity. We are essentially dealing in a choice in our consciousness all the time. There is free choice in our attitude.

My experience over and over is when things are working, there is a harmonious energy in it. For example, when you hit a baseball out of the park, there is a thing called, “The sweet spot” or “The zone.” I’ve had the experience of it being effortless. There is a feeling in your hands like you didn’t even hit the ball, as if there was no impact. In my experience, it was rare to hit the sweet spot. When I did it was an amazing feeling. It felt like I didn’t hit anything, even though I knew I did. I realized something went on, like a power got in from the unmanifest into the manifest.

Whenever you go into the negative of any kind, there are some practical ways you would know it because something goes off. There is a sense of, “Oh no,” or “Here we go again.” It hurts. It has an incorrectness in it. When we get onto what is actually true, it is like happy days are here again. So it is correct. It is not just partially correct. It is totally correct. Always correct. So what is it when we are off? I just look at it as a temporary lapse. It is a momentary blink. There is something about this world that allows us to have the luxury of karma. It is permitted, but it is still a temporary condition. We are not going to be in anything in the world forever. So at some point, we are out of it. We correct it. I love another way that John-Roger put it for us which is to “Minimize the downtime.” Don’t wait. Don’t tarry. Don’t entertain it. Don’t pile nega-

We are in touch with the divine. It is manifest. Where we are playing in the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness is a grace field. you to choose right now in this moment. Perhaps it is as simple as ceasing againstness. Maybe you say something like, “I know I don’t want to fight. I don’t want to argue.” Sometimes that’s where there is a block. Some folks won’t say, “I love my enemies” because they feel that’s forbidden. They feel as if they took a vow, “I will damn you all the way to hell even if I have to be the last one in hell. Just to make sure you’re in hell, I’ll be there.” Is that what you want to do? I don’t think so. It is really not worth it, that damnation and vengeance.

comes to vengeance. It isn’t your level of concern. Those who have that level of concern to handle it are here, present, and accounted for. We don’t really need you to get involved with revenge. If you want to help, move along. Be on your way.

I think that is one of the ways the Christ does what it does. It basically comes in and says, “I’ve got the karma if you’re willing to let it go.” It does not absolve us of correctness. In the story of the woman who was the adulteress, Jesus said, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Nobody stoned her. Everybody walked away. In MSIA, we are lovers of the truth.

We need to have the courage of the truth that sees the face of God. We have to somehow not hide or retreat from whatever appears as the truth in the moment. How do we process it then? Is it loving in the way we process it? The way to check the loving is to check it out --- Is it a whole truth and nothing but the truth? Or is there something masquerading as loving that’s a kind of conditional loving or a lesser truth? There is a reason why we are playing at that level. It takes all we got as in the commandment of loving God as the truth of God, which is the absolute truth, a truth that is universal. That is one of the salvations we are all in. Thank God, we don’t have to sort it out. It is sorted it out in the truth. The truth will set us free, if we are willing to get onto that way of being. So ask, is it loving? Check it out. If it is not loving, then keep looking. The truth has to hold up in the loving, and the loving has to hold up in the truth. If you say, “I love you, love you, love you, but this part, I don’t love that part,” that is where the truth stops. Right there. You haven’t got to the truth. The Lord is a lover of it all. God is calling us to play at that level. The transformation truly takes place in

our willingness to keep stepping it up. Each situation in our lives is a challenge and an opportunity to choose into the Light. The only difference is the degree to which we find ourselves challenged by the nature of each situation. Perhaps it is more challenging to choose into the Light when we are happy and contented because we have a tendency to forget the importance of choosing the Light when we are at our best. There is a wartime saying, “Everybody in a foxhole knows God.” When we are at our worst, even the most devout unbelievers call upon God. If you wait for trouble before you call upon God, then you are in trouble. God always answers our call. The question is, are we listening? Are we hearing God’s answers and abiding by those answers? Perhaps the obvious answer to that question is no, considering any number of situations in the world where there is violence, disease, corruption, injustice, and the like. Humans have been consistently ignoring and violating the answer from God from time immemorial. The results are the difficulties in which we individually and collectively find ourselves in the world today.

One of the great answers that applies to all of us is to “Love your enemies.” [Matthew 5:44]. The path to loving your enemies is entered by forgiveness. It is traversed by an unconditional willingness to let go of the past and live in the presence of loving.

is what lives inside of us as hatred, fear, condemnation, indifference, etc. We shall overcome the enemies that we encounter inside or outside with unconditional loving and acceptance. We demonstrate the loving by the choices we make and where we place our focus.

We must learn to break down the barriers of separation caused by patterns of hatred and bigotry that have been repeated across generations and cultures. The real “enemy”

During times of powerful upheaval and negativity in the world, we often question our ability to overcome or even survive the enemies that confront us. The answer is al-

ways to stop the cycles of perpetual negativity, both individually and collectively, by fulfilling the call to love unconditionally. The cycle of negativity is stopped by choosing the good not just once, but again and again until it is goodness that prevails in your life and in our world altogether. One day each of us will understand that negativity, while being a choice, is never God’s answer or God’s intention for anyone, no

matter how evil they have chosen to be. God’s business is always unconditional loving and forgiveness of all—which still includes responsibility and stopping the againstness that confronts us. Loving is what we all have always. Love is who we are. It takes great strength to see the face of God in those who are acting with destruction as their expression. Each and every time we are confronted by negativity

in others and the situations we face, we must strive toward God’s answer to all of the creation: “Love one another, as I have loved you” [John 15:12], “Love your neighbor as yourself” [Matthew 19:19], and love all of the creation with “All thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” [Matthew 22:37]. Be glad you have any opportunity, great or small, to express your charity and compassion regardless of the resistance or indifference

you may face. Loving is your true nature, as well as the true nature of all those who act against it by choosing negativity. This, in part, is God’s calling unto each of us. This, in part, is the divine action and the partaking in the blessings that already are.

Pilgrims to the Field of the Stars by Marcos Cajina Little could I have imagined that what then seemed a friendly farewell to the MSIA group in a little church in St. Jean Pied-de-Port would turn out to become an opportunity to prepare for the visit of the Traveler, initiates and ministers to Spain in 2017. You see, I always wanted to set foot the “Camino” (a.k.a. The St. James Path) in the French part of the Pyrenees, and walk across the steep hills that separate France from Spain on my way to Santiago de Compostela where the path

@msiaorg

ends. Interestingly, “Compostela” in Latin means Field of the Stars. However, when John Morton called out my name and asked me to step forward facing the group on the France trip in 2015, I thought he was just being nice and wishing me a happy return home. It was not until a year later that I understood that Spirit had set me off on an incognito mission to help prepare the visit of those called forward to do Light work as ordinary pilgrims heading to the Field of the Stars.

“A lot of people want to talk about how the energy’s good or bad. What they ought to do is look inside themselves and see how the energy is inside of them, because the energy inside is the energy out there, available equally to all of us. Since this one energy, is always a source, and always (all ways) a supply there’s only one thing left to do with this whole process called life, and that’s just to have a good laugh about it!” 42 New Day Herald

As I contemplated the wrecked Roman portico that symbolized the entry door into Spain across the Pyrenees, I wondered what it would be like to climb the steep hills on a cold rainy day. I gazed at the distance between where I was standing and where the group was going next to do more Light work. In the solitude of the little village, confined by breathtaking rock formations, I walked down an empty street. It was raining. Some snowflakes started to land on my woolen hat. Nobody seemed to care as the streets were deserted. How odd I

@msiaorg

thought, for a place well populated with pilgrims from all over the world. Standing alone in communion with nature, I felt mesmerized by the beauty and the energy of the place when my taxi silently pulled me out of my contemplation. An hour had elapsed since I waved goodbye to our group and it seemed only a moment ago. It only took a few minutes to find myself heading to the top of the mountains, following the old trails of courageous pilgrims who centuries before had found a path to traverse the perils of the devilish summits and the dangers of deep valleys to reach Compostela.

Spirit wanted to start my incognito mission straight away by placing columns of Light all along the way across the mountains, which kept me busy for the next two hours until I reached the town of Pamplona, where I arrived just in time to take the only train running to Madrid that day because of a general strike. Since 2016, MSIA has been preparing a fascinating tour around Spain and Portugal. I will not disclose the details of the trip, but I can share the exquisite care, loving, and attention to detail put out by those actively working behind the scenes. A place is being prepared for you to live, to love, to learn, to laugh, to listen to your heart, and to leave a legacy of Light.

As an appetizer, suffice it to say that the Spanish part of the tour will end in the city of Santiago de Compostela, with the celebration of J-R’s birthday. The celebration will take place in a breathtaking hotel right next to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral is the ending spot for many pilgrims who were enraptured by the magnificence of the cathedral, dropping to their

knees and crying in gratitude after weeks of walking journeys. Not too far away from the cathedral, MSIA has organized the Passage into Spirit PAT 8 retreat. So you can go to the end of the world (Finisterre) not too far from where the tomb of the apostle James is believed to be, and participate in Passage into Spirit in a city called the Field of Stars (Compostela). How cool can that be!

Welcome to Hispania, pilgrim of Light and love.

Living and Working with John-Roger An Interview with Ted Drake by David Sand NDH: What’s it like working with J-R? Ted Drake: Well, the main thing is the blessing of working more closely with J-R as a spiritual teacher, because I can’t remember any time when the interactions became just material. He has said, obviously many times, that he never forgets that he’s the Mystical Traveler. That quality was always present in my interactions with him. Although there may have been a materialistic focus, or a task that needed to be done, the quality of teaching, learning, and working with a spiritual teacher was always there. I guess if there was some time that I forgot that it was present, there was still the quality of upliftment that takes place around him anyway—or with him on the phone, or reading his

John-Roger with Ted Drake

Ted Drake has worked with John-Roger in various capacities since 1970. He was part of the original group to move into Prana in 1974 and CEO of Atman Travel. He moved to Windermere Ranch in 1989, where he has been working as a ranch hand. @msiaorg

email. I could be very confused about something and I would sit down to write an email to J-R about it. Just that level of involvement, writing an email with no response yet, could completely clarify the subject, or it could enlighten me as to what I needed to learn or do in order to clarify.

It’s helped me with my impatience a little bit [laughing]. At least I got a better understanding that what some of us may have perceived as an annoying imbalance was for at least one of us, usually a protagonist, a very important lesson, and that learning was the greater priority.

I enjoyed watching him interact with other people and watching him transform or transmute negativity in a situation, and watching how he could find or create a point of balance in any situation. One of the most frustrating lessons in working with him, or just observing him, would be that I would see an out of balance situation, and either I would tell him about it, or I would realize he already knew about it…and I’d keep wondering, “Why don’t you fix this J-R?” Sometimes I’d be in that situation for many years, more than a decade. Then I would observe when he would finally bring it into balance and I would think, “Okay, so why did it have to take this long before he would balance it?” I don’t remember ever asking him, but generally the answer inside of me seemed to be that if he had balanced or cleared the situation sooner, someone, generally one of the main protagonists, would not have been ready to learn the lesson that was there for them.

NDH: When you said he could find the point of balance in any situation, what did you mean by that?

@msiaorg

Ted: Generally, if two people are experiencing an imbalance, I’ll look at it and start questioning. Is the balance more towards this person or that? How far in each direction? Of course, that becomes much more complicated when there’s more than two people involved in the same game. Where I saw this most dramatically was house meetings at Prana. We would be trying to make decisions and usually there were two sides. It wasn’t always that simple, but if we take that as an example, if a person presented on behalf of one side or against the other, it seemed as though nearly everybody in the room might have voted with that person at that time, but then when the next person presented they might have moved to the opposite side. People would be so swayed.

One of the most frustrating lessons in working with him, or just observing him, would be that I would see an out of balance situation, and either I would tell him about it, or I would realize he already knew about it…and I’d keep wondering, “Why don’t you fix this J-R?”

When I looked at J-R’s personal staff, I sensed that they knew or had something that I didn’t know or have. Which was inspiring. More important than that, somehow inside of me I knew that if I stuck around, then that might be imparted to me as well.

J-R always seemed to be able to resolve that, and when we made decisions at Prana—and this could be true in any group—sometimes I would think afterwards, “Well yeah, but if it had gone this way instead of that way…. ” But when J-R brought us to the point of balance, it was so joyful to watch how well it was resolved inside of each participant. It was kind of a sublime resolution usually. Maybe always. NDH: How did you first meet J-R? Ted: It was 1970. I was dying, and it appeared (and J-R confirmed this later) that I probably had months left to live. My body was incapable of detoxifying at that point. The normal onslaught of toxins that we all experience every day, but generally clear, was killing me. At the time I was in Miami and I thought in order to take care of this it might work a little bit better if I moved to New Zealand because it is less polluted. I didn’t know what else to do. When I went to buy the ticket, the travel agent said, “You have to overnight somewhere and your choices are Pago Pago or Los Angeles.” and I asked her a little bit about Pago Pago. I had already heard about J-R, and that there were taped seminars in Miami, but somehow I never did any of that. I picked the flight that had an overnight in Los Angeles. I thought I might as well recover from a little bit of jet lag, so I decided to stay for a while.

A friend introduced me to J-R. So right now, I guess, it’s been about 46 years between flights. At the time, I had a bunch of things wrong with me. One is that I had osteoporosis so bad that if I would knock on a door, my hand would hurt for days. My spine had started to curve—scoliosis. I had gone to Massachusetts General Hospital and I was told that I had to have what they called a spinal fusion. Which is no big deal nowadays, but back then the doctor told me that it would take six months, flat on my back in the hospital, without leaving the bed, to recover from the surgery. He said that I had a zero percent chance of reversal of the curvature. I would never have a straight spine again, and I had a 30 percent chance that the procedure would be successful and arrest the curvature, so that it wouldn’t get any worse. I had this coating on my large intestine. When I met J-R, all that stuff got reversed. I had a far worse condition than just imminent death because my attitude was so bad. I actually thought that the world was coming to an end because what I observed around me was getting worse and worse all the time. It never dawned on me that it was my own creation and my own perception that was creating all that. Fortunately, that was reversed as well. Or I should say largely reversed. I’m still working on it now. J-R gave me a special diet in a light study and he also told me Continue article

to get chiropractic adjustments. He said the diet would help me rebuild the bones and he did a whole bunch of other things as well. It was delightful. He said that if he straightened out my spine immediately, I would die from the pain. He said, “Have a series of adjustments to get it fixed up.” At one point, I had to switch chiropractors. The new one did an X-ray as part of his intake procedure. After he took the X-ray, I told him about the scoliosis, and he said, “That never happened. That’s totally impossible. Your spine could not be this straight if you ever had scoliosis.” I just kept quiet. The spine is still fine today. NDH: What were your first impressions when you came to L.A.? Ted: When I looked at J-R’s personal staff, I sensed that they knew or had something that I didn’t know or have. Which was inspiring. More important than that, somehow

inside of me I knew that if I stuck around, then that might be imparted to me as well. Prior to that, I had lost a sense of direction. Since I was a little child, I’ve always been interested in learning, so it seemed to translate to “what do I learn now?” I remember spending a long time in the stacks of the library of Columbia University, just looking, like “what do I learn now?” I was looking at books on meditation. When I looked at one book on mantra yoga. I thought, well that seems boring. That was as far as I could get with it. I wasn’t able to discern that there might be different levels of that. I thought I was able to discern the input process, but I wasn’t able to discern the product or the outcome. I was incapable of making that choice at that time. But when I met J-R I realized I had made a choice that seemed to happen overnight. I kept thinking I want to stay a little longer on that stopover… and then I realized I wasn’t leaving.

The new [chiropractor] did an X-ray as part of his intake procedure. After he took the X-ray, I told him about the scoliosis, and he said, “That never happened. That’s totally impossible. Your spine could not be this straight if you ever had scoliosis.”

64 New Day Herald

msia.org

NDH: What kinds of things did you learn from J-R? Ted: That question sounds impossible. I want to talk about a couple of things that come to mind. When I said it sounds impossible it’s just because that’s so constantly what was going on. I had been brought up to live a mostly materialistic existence. Supposedly more money is better than less, and a longer life is better than a shorter one—all these conditions and qualifications—but he was giving me a whole new set of reference points for all of that. One day, I got stuck and I was seeking direction. J-R showed up physically and he told me the solution. I said, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Later on he explained it: “The only difference between you and me is attitude. And that’s the only difference.” I not only wanted to change my attitude, which I already did before he said that, but I started methods, including decades of doing innerphasings and the “Do it Now” meditation with the affirmation, “I focus on God”. NDH: Was it easy to work for him, or demanding? Were there certain patterns or styles of work that you noticed? Ted: I think any person you work with is going to have a different mix of those two things. The difficulty each person presents, or the set of difficulties, is going to be different. Sometimes I’ve experienced kind of a fear or an anxiety, which is something I tend to create, but most of the time, I’ve experienced a tremendous amount of support. The most unusual aspect of the support was the extent to which he did not condition what I could bring up with him, what I could talk to him about, what I could ask about, or areas in which I could request assistance. There was no conditioning or conditionality. During the whole time I knew him I never saw him take a position of superiority over any other person. This aspect of openness in the relationship was truly astounding. And I tried to be as open in return. I remember once at Prana someone told me

something and said, “Do not tell J-R.” As soon as she left the room, I picked up the phone and called J-R, and started telling him about it. He said, “Why are you telling me this?” As I started to answer him, he picked

up on me. He said, “Oh, I get it.” It’s like, if I did not tell him it would raise the question of whether I value my relationship with her more than my relationship with him. I told him just to clear myself. Not because I

thought he really needed the information. He was open to any kind of communication on any level. When I was talking to him, I always perceived that I had his attention. When I sent him an email, he always had time

to read it. I never heard of anyone working with him where there were any exceptions. He always had time to listen, to discuss. Sometimes you’d have to wait, but there was never anything for which he said, “I’m sorry, I don’t have time for this.” He was always present when I was talking to him. More than anyone I’ve ever observed, he had the humility and the flexibility to work with a person the way that person needed to be worked with. Sometimes I would see another staff person do something and I knew I would never get away with that. John-Roger would just tolerate it repeatedly with no comment. Each person was treated individually. The working style I noticed was flexibility and humility. When I say humility, in case that’s not extremely obvious, most people will take a stand, like, “Someone really needs to treat me in this way.” J-R would just surrender and deal with the person where that person needed to be dealt with. So you might say that rather than having a certain style of doing things, he lacked style more than anyone, and I consider that a great accomplishment. He was pretty dramatic in making the point of his devotion to each of us as an individual. It was a high level of dedication to having the flexibility and the humility to come to each person’s level. Often you could see the shift when he turned his focus from one person to the next, and if the other person would change, then he would too. His whole expression would change. It’s really an admirable, beautiful example.

Many times when I needed to handle a situation and I had a hangup, I wouldn’t recognize it then. But years later when I would get past the hangup and look back at that situation, I realized how kind, how considerate John-Roger had been. Just to let me have a hangup until I was ready to get rid of it, and to assist me in solving a problem in the way that I thought I needed to solve it. NDH: It’s a detachment because it seems like there was nothing pulling on him in the lower worlds. Ted: It didn’t pull him in enough to do it. You see, if there’s nothing pulling on him at all, then his behavior would not be so exemplary. But if he was thinking, “I’d rather have better food and be able to be served…and I’ll sacrifice that,” that’s what makes his behavior so amazing. What I saw was sacrifice and willingness to let go. NDH: So it wasn’t like an absence of karma. It was like a letting go of the karma. Ted: Amen. Which to me is much greater. If Jesus was perfect, then perhaps we could conclude that he accomplished nothing here on earth, and that what he did was no big deal; but by describing Jesus as imperfect, it does two things. First of all, it tells us yeah, he did have things that he suffered with and had to overcome in order to complete his ministry. And the more important lesson to me is, if he was perfect, then we have a perfect excuse for not doing what he did, but if he was imperfect like us, we can’t pretend that limitation. That’s how I look at J-R also.

NDH: Did you ever see him out of balance? Ted: Oh yeah. Yeah, plenty of times. NDH: In what way? Ted: A number of times, I’ve seen him take a certain approach with someone. Then whatever approach he took, obviously that person was reacting to that approach. So he was creating a block instead of healing and fixing. I was amazed to watch the speed with which he would backpedal, the extent to which he would backtrack. He would not even worry about completely doing a 180, and contradicting himself, and taking an entirely different approach, which then worked with that person. What you’re asking has been recorded many times. So often when I would see him doing that, I would think about how difficult that would be for me, how humiliating it would seem to me, to boldly assert one thing, and then when a person objects, just equally boldly say the opposite. I guess there seems to be some kind of rigidity in me, where I would watch and say, “I don’t think I can do that.” But his service to each person was so powerful and so dynamic. Sometimes, if I had a concern, he voiced it for me if I hadn’t said enough about it, even if no one else was concerned. NDH: Did he do a lot of explaining of things or was it mostly by example? Ted: By example. He often told us that he doesn’t tell us every last word. There are things he said that it’s taken decades for me to understand. By surfacing the issue, eventually the learning takes place. He has spoken repeatedly about how he likes to surprise people, and he enjoyed the fact that he could do that. He was willing to go to so many different levels to break people free. NDH: Has it been different for you since he’s died? Ted: Around the first of October in 2014, shortly before he passed away, I woke up in the morning and I couldn’t find John-Roger inside of me. On one level it was just a predictable panic, “Where’d you go? What’s up?” This had happened to

me so many times before. It first started happening way back in the early ’70s. The first time it was a big thing. Each time this happened, it was usually within a few days when somehow, I’m bumbling around inside my consciousness—like I don’t even know what I’m doing—and suddenly, “Oh there you are.” That’s the first part. Then the next part is I somehow come to the conclusion that I’ve accessed him in a higher place inside my consciousness. Now, if you ask me, “Where did you go to find him and how did you do it?” I’ll

say, “I have no idea.” If you ask me what made you think you were in a higher place inside your consciousness, I have no clue. None. That’s somehow what I’ve concluded. The second time it happened was a little bit less frightening, and now it’s been going on many times. So when it happened around the first of October in 2014, my concern or ambivalence was minimal. But later in the day I noticed I couldn’t find Jesus Christ inside of me either. At that point, it was much more of a panic because that hadn’t happened

But later in the day [shortly before J-R passed away] I noticed I couldn’t find Jesus Christ inside of me either. At that point, it was much more of a panic because that hadn’t happened before… When I reflected on what I was experiencing, I’m like, “Oh, maybe these guys aren’t gone. Maybe they’ve shifted from a personal presence as themselves to this mode that Jesus Christ had been using, functioning in us and through us, as us.”

before… and so I became quite a bit more concerned about what was going on. My habitual response was, “What am I doing wrong?” This doesn’t make this process any easier. Generally, this would be resolved within a few days with J-R. But this time it wasn’t. That was the point at which I became more concerned what was going on. This continued for days. Then I remember that specifically with Jesus Christ, he didn’t always have to be in me as Jesus Christ. He could also be in me as me. I had been in groups in MSIA in which Jesus Christ was working in us and through us, as us—each person in the group. There is no “other” recognizable as Jesus Christ when he does that. I’ve been able to confirm those experiences with J-R, so I guess he was preparing me for this event at the beginning of October in 2014. When I reflected on what I was experiencing, I’m like, “Oh, maybe these guys aren’t gone. Maybe they’ve shifted

from a personal presence as themselves to this mode that Jesus Christ had been using, functioning in us and through us, as us.”

NDH: What did you learn from watching J-R at work in different situations?

Ted: One thing that I saw him do was that he practiced I realized I had to shift to a a form of openness within higher level of discernment the organization. He really in order to figure out whether encouraged us to be very in fact that was taking place inclusive when we would again this time. One clue that send emails, for example— had seemed to be present including everyone who would each time in the past was be concerned as a result of a more consistent sense of the decision-making process. service. There was a level, a I don’t remember him ever vibration that was positive and saying don’t include. I would that would hold in a way that see him take an email with it didn’t at other times. It just a short address list and add seemed like “me” but operating to the address list. matter who brought up a question, he would want it to be addressed. Now there were certain times when people would take a very obvious and generally self-confessed position of opposition or againstness. I’m not talking about that. I perceive a difference between power and control. Power is like love. You gain power by giving it away, by empowering people. If you just look at the English, how do we talk about control? You take control. He said that someone asked him, “J-R how do you handle so much?” He said something like if someone brings me something, I figure they can handle that. If a person brings forward an idea, it’s their idea and J-R wouldn’t take that from them. Then if more than one person became involved and there was a dispute, he wouldn’t have to take it from that person or those people. In a way, with notable exceptions, the ball was never in his court. As soon as there was something for him to handle, he would handle it—generally, giving it back to the person or the persons who were carrying it at that time. NDH: I think you’re saying if someone came up with an idea to do something, he would say, “Yeah, sure, go ahead and do it,” to have them complete the action. Ted: Correct. He was never taking control of anything. He was always empowering. As long as he sticks on that side of the equation, there’s never a burden on him. NDH: The way I see it, I always relate that to J-R’s triangle of manifestation, where he says for every thought, have a feeling and action to match. That’s the way action is balanced in the physical world. If someone’s coming up with the idea, what they have is a thought

@msiaorg

and a feeling, but without the physical action to match. It creates an unbalanced situation. It’s almost like he’s balancing the situation by saying, “Okay now go do it.” J-R has also said that ego is thought and feeling together. By taking the physical action you’re in a way undercutting the ego, because once you’ve completed it in the physical world, it’s out of the realm of ego. Ted: We have an idea in our culture of what we might call a business ethic, as different from other kinds of ethics. It’s as though there’s an ethics in one area like business, and there’s another set of ethics for criminal justice or the military for example, and another set of ethics for other areas. That had been so engrained in me, but I kept noticing something different in J-R. For a long time, I noticed that whenever something happened or was done that seemed adverse to somebody, or they were going to lose in the situation, I found that J-R would question it. At first I didn’t know what was going on. Then it began to seem that although he often spoke as though he had a business ethic—like you go to work, you do what the boss tells you, and that’s all there is to it—he wasn’t talking to us that way. J-R seemed to challenge my idea of business ethics. I remember one of the first lessons in this area he gave me was in 1971. He gave me a copy of a book, Mellinger’s Guide to Mail OrderMarketing. The main point of the book is that it was a rigorous, thorough, clear lesson in objectivity. Mellinger had put himself through college by publishing a little ad, and he spoke about how he had a bunch of layouts and he thought he might choose what looked like the best one. It failed miserably, and he picked

New Day Herald 73

another one, and it failed, and he picked another one and it failed. Eventually he picked one final one and it succeeded. In each case, he kept careful track of what that ad brought in, and laid all of the others that had failed next to it. He asked himself, “Okay, what’s better about this one?” He could find nothing. There was nothing within his consciousness that said, “That’s why that one would work.” His conclusion, which I consider very smart, was that what succeeded was the objectivity when he tested each one and then picked the one that worked. On a superficial level, J-R was giving a lesson for success through objectivity. Not just objectivity, because you can be objective without bothering to measure—but taking the measurements that give you the optimum amount of data on which to exercise objectivity. Years later, I had the thought that success is being open to and making use of feedback. More recently, I realized that sure, J-R was teaching us how to succeed, but he was also teaching us how to be more loving with each other while we’re working together. Often what I observe as a decisionmaking process is this: One person thinks we should do A, and another person thinks we

74 New Day Herald

msia.org

should do B, and the more dominant one wins. As long as we eschew or avoid feedback, we’re pretty much stuck with that. It puts us close to the level of an animal. The successful path may or may not be chosen, but we know what we’re choosing out of. We’re choosing out of the area of the Christ, where we’re all equal, and we’re choosing more into the mammalian level, where someone’s going to dominate someone else. The more we can open to feedback, the more we can focus our decision-making process on the use of objective feedback. Then anyone can contribute to the direction of the group and anyone can be right. No one will ever be proven right unless objective measurements are taken.

at success and we can treat each other as equals. Because of the way I was brought up, I didn’t learn to bond with anyone. So when there was a difficulty or a relationship didn’t seem to work, the easiest solution was to fire somebody. Each time I did that, J-R would question me. Then he would have me talk to the person and get that person’s point of view on our relationship. I would learn not to just casually drop a relationship because it seemed like the easiest thing to do, but instead try to act like a person who’s bonding in a community— even if I’m not. Also, each time I did what he said, which was sort of like what we would formally call an exit interview, I would receive from the other person a message that seemed to be out of left field, and my reaction was, “I didn’t know that was important to you.”

I never saw J-R deviate from that way, which is non-inflictive, and which creates a certain level of objectivity. If we set as priorities getting feedback, In a family, for example, you’d be and making choices on that feedback, expected to consider each person’s then we’ve got a much better chance emotions equally or almost equally.

. . .when there was a difficulty or a relationship didn’t seem to work, the easiest solution was to fire somebody. Each time I did that, J-R would question me. Then he would have me talk to the person and get that person’s point of view on our relationship.

@msiaorg

New Day Herald 75

I hadn’t been considering their emotions at all—or even been aware of them. This is subjective, but sometimes during the exit interview, the person wouldn’t say too much at all. Often at Prana when people were asked why they were leaving, they’d say they were just moving on. When I got answers like that – and this is subjective – John-Roger seemed to be disappointed, or would just say something to indicate that he didn’t get the whole story. Where this is played out the most in our society I think, is in areas like military, business, bureaucracy, and criminal justice. That’s where I got my idea of business ethics—a high tolerance for a huge gap in control of the relationship, meaning inequality. In my perception, J-R was trying to heal that and bring it into a balance. If you go back to the Mellinger example, if you can isolate with good accounting the systems, and procedures, the products, the policies, the people that succeed, little or no additional interpersonal discipline seems to be required. NDH: Were there other examples of how J-R promoted family ethics, or group ethics? Ted: I’ve perceived people stealing from J-R, taking things physically. I’ve perceived people who were simply not pulling their weight, not doing their job. I’ve perceived people performing acts of sabotage. Even to the extent that people

76 New Day Herald

would receive feedback, as I mentioned before, he might wait for more than a decade until he was sure that that person could take the feedback well and understand the mercy in his intention. NDH: Yeah, it seems like he is just allowing people freedom and forgiving. Both freedom and forgiveness. Ted: Amen. NDH: It’s according to each person’s karma and allowing them to learn the lessons and their karma. Ted: Right. Freedom, forgiveness and empowerment. NDH: I also heard of one person who left staff after working for MSIA for quite a while, and he told somebody else, “I’ve been trying to get rid of that person for years.” He never did it outwardly. It’s like for him to do it physically would be to enter into the karma. Ted: Well, maybe. He explained that to me once. We had a meeting and he said, “I’m going to fire that person.” I don’t know what level this came from, but I said, “No you won’t.” He said, “Yes, I’m going to fire that person.” I said, “No, I can’t see you doing that.” He said it a third time and I said no a third time. I don’t know where I was coming from with all that, but some level in me was convinced. He never did fire the person. Later he explained it to me. He said, “You know, what I

msia.org

do when I fire someone, is on the other side I’ll hold a bauble out in front of them and then they are attracted to it and they follow that.” In other words, if you think that this bauble is better than working with him, okay. He observes that the person is choosing out of the relationship and then he enables that person to ground that choice by quitting and going to something that seems more attractive. NDH: Then it’s a free choice rather than a situation of force. Ted: Often I would look at J-R, and look at myself, and ask, “What’s the difference?” The main thing I noticed—and that doesn’t mean it’s the main thing that he is, but what I noticed—was his willingness to do what’s called for with that person, in that situation, at that time. NDH: Obedience to the Spirit. Ted: When I look at him, I go, “Wow, that’s the lesson.”

and Be Healed A Story of Miracles by Alisha Hayes

F

irst, I clutched the billowy Italian bedspread my mother had given me to my chest and wept. Then I just stared at the bedroom walls painted a discomforting red in the rented house that never felt anything like a home to me. My saintly doctor of almost twenty years had just given me the news at 6:00 am that I had aggressive uterine cancer, necessitating the immediate removal of five organs. Gradually, my lifelong habit of spiritual devotion gathered itself about me and I burrowed my head into the shoulder of my Lord. I still can’t adequately explain the peace that blanketed me. I heard within that the cancer was the arbiter between freedom I had assiduously sought but had never been able to grant myself and imprisonment within limiting beliefs and unnecessary martyrdom. I

@msiaorg

also knew that the potential surgery portended an upward change of consciousness for me. Thanks to J-R’s teachings, I could believe that the cancer was for me, not against me. Not that I didn’t get afraid. Over the months of the adventure I am about to unfurl for you, I shook plenty. It would have been far easier to have just let my kindly surgeon ‘cut it out’ of me then to do what we MSIAers do—utilize our inner and outer resources to decode the messages encrypted in challenges, having faith that are sent straight from a loving God. That I received a new lease on life from this seeming death sentence is yet another validation of the work we do that returns our gaze upward.

New Day Herald 81

The First Ordinary Miracle I contemplated calling my family. My sister, Krishna, is five years older than me, a gynecological surgeon and a Southern Baptist Republican. For fun, she’s a general in the U.S. army. We are quite different and I could never find a bridge to her. We were so distant, it would not have been odd for me to not call and tell her I was possibly dying. However, I intuitively picked up the phone and called her first. She took my call in the middle of her busy medical rounds. When she heard my news, decades of estrangement melted away. She explained the gravity of my situation but also why it would be highly desirable to keep some of the organs of which the current grade of cancer implicated excision. For example, she told me that removing ovaries in a woman under sixty-five increases the odds of every cause of death. Though she did not believe I could go into the “spontaneous remission” (I now believe remissions are likely not just “spontaneous” but are the natural result of conscious choice and effort) that would be required to reduce the surgery she called my doctor and requested a second opinion on the biopsy. Over the next two months, she oversaw my medical care and offered to come take care of me for a few days after surgery. (She is also the Founder/CEO of a National Medical Board Review Company and this was her busiest time of year so it was a grand gesture on her part.) That I magically got my big sister back was the first miracle in this story and I have cried tears of joy more than once in wonder upon it.

I now believe remissions are likely not just “spontaneous” but are the natural result of conscious choice and effort. . .

Prayer Communion and J-R A few days after the diagnosis, my soul sister, Heide, hosted prayer communion for me at her home for the ten or so friends I’d told. Someone brought food (refuting my habitual offer to feed everyone myself ) and folks chatted amicably. I went into the bathroom and collapsed on the cold tile floor, because while this soirée seemed just like the spiritual/ social gatherings we’d had for decades, this one was in honor of...my cancer. Life was not ordinary anymore. They laid me upon downy plush white blankets on an elegant bed and stood in a circle around me. Michael was at my head, Heide tenderly held a few fingers of my left hand, a man clutched my right hand tightly as if to say he had me, and two women gently clasped my feet. All the others embraced each other while everyone prayed and chanted over me. The intimacy and physical touch made me feel safe enough to finally let the child in me sob. Feeling baptized, I melted into my friends’ eyes beaming love and then my gaze lifted up into the countenance of J-R. I “heard” him say that if I wanted to change my consciousness, I would have to make healing my number one priority, and by doing so I would be transformed. He suggested I confess my ignorance. We both agreed that would be super easy. He told me he had kept himself from me physically so that I could become the minister I am. I asked what kept me away from knowing him more inwardly. He said it’s that I don’t take enough time for myself—to do SE’s, write, relax. Then he told me he had never left me and he never would. This time my tears were soft as a Balinese sun shower.

New Day Herald 83

All I Need is An Ordinary Miracle Krishna’s insistence on a second opinion, necessitating a one week stall of the surgery, bought me time to find my faith, and I didn’t look back. I intuited that I needed some sort of surgery for spiritual reasons, even if the cancer were to disappear completely. I recalled J-R saying karma can be cleared with the knife, and that going that far out of the body because of anesthesia can usher in transformation. Several folks reminded me that it did for him in 1963 when he received the keys to the Traveler Consciousness. I believed it would bring a blessing for me. Oddly, my mind seemed to have been temporarily hijacked regarding the issue of surgery and I never questioned having it until after the surgery but um, too late. I appeared to have been in the “bubble”of what seemed to be a spiritual action. Of course, I would have preferred to receive the blessing in a considerably gentler way, but there is no greater romance than falling in love with what is. Though I felt in congruence with the lesser surgery, the cancer grade was too dire for the surgeons to agree to it. As well as being fond of the aforementioned body parts, I wanted more time to avail myself of the highly compelling message being sent. I told my surgeon, Cedar Sinai’s finest, Dr. Li, that I wanted to delay the surgery. He was not having it. He told me a month or two would afford me nothing to lower the grade to be less invasive and in fact might be enough time to allow the cancer to metastasize (spread throughout the body) requiring chemotherapy and possibly taking my life.

84 New Day Herald

msia.org

Fortunately, God intervened. Both labs that evaluated the original biopsy and a doctor’s office misplaced my pathology slides! The odds of both doing so are staggering. Apparently, it’s not good for a doc or laboratory’s street cred to lose cancer slides. While they were all flustered and busily pointing fingers at each other, I was in awe, thanking God for buying me more time sans scary talks about how I would die without immediate surgery. I started focusing on putting myself in a place to receive an “ordinary miracle.” I wanted to soften the immensity of what it would be to release cancer from my body in just weeks. I didn’t want to scare the parts of me that needed to be in cooperation to affect this paradigm shift. So, receiving an ordinary miracle became my intention. After all, miracles hold us to their chest like cherished lovers everyday—an infant’s first breath, a déjà vu, a storm being weathered we were sure would demolish us…So, this would be just another routine marvel.

I appeared to have been in the “bubble”of what seemed to be a spiritual action. Of course, I would have preferred to receive the blessing in a considerably gentler way, but there is no greater romance than falling in love with what is.

Take Care of Yourself First… Heeding J-R’s directive to prioritize my healing, I started reducing my workload as a counselor and business owner, and withdrew, at least temporarily, my bid to be a supermom and super wife/caregiver. Spirit playing hide and seek with the slides and me standing in my truth and telling the docs I was delaying surgery bought me about six more weeks. I got down to the business of courting an ordinary miracle on every level. The stakes were high; I was game.

my panic over mounting medical bills so I could prioritize my healing. God Can Work Through An Imperfect Vessel

I got down to the business of courting an ordinary miracle on every level. The stakes were high; I was game.

@msiaorg

I used to think I had to be balanced and “have it all together” to facilitate and to do the counseling work I do. My highly not-together life had already kindly demonstrated that this belief was nonsense but if I was in any doubt, the cancer blew that mythology out of the water. I worked with clients just hours after I was given the cancer diagnosis. I looked in faces distraught about issues seemingly far less than cancer, and I focused on serving and loving exactly where I found both of us. I co-facilitated our class series, Awakening to The New Jerusalem, the next day after my first visit to the oncologist. I just did what I normally do, which is to ask that I disappear so Spirit may appear, surrender into the divine unknowing and love whomever is in front of me. I worked to assist folks to find the very faith that was being severely tested in me. When we think we have nothing to give is precisely when we need to give so that we discover we have plenty to give, if we are coming from the infinite source of giving itself—God. I did not tell clients or participants for quite a while and they later said they had no idea anything was amiss because, well, in that moment of being gathered together in the name of the Lord, nothing was. I learned that it’s nonsense that I can’t do the work when I am personally taken to my knees because it’s not about me at all. God is doing the work and in my experience and, to my undying gratitude, He is not limited by a highly imperfect vessel. It seemed that all that was required was the one thing in my pithy job description which is: get out of the way. Apparently, our loving and openness is enough.

God Loves all Its Creation, Even Cancer I was unsure if I should tell everyone I had cancer. I didn’t want folks to worry or tell me what a terrible thing it was. I didn’t want clients to stop calling. I had to process my belief that I was a spiritual failure (now there’s a contradiction in terms) if I had cancer. There’s all this talk about how if one stays in a positive state, they will never get sick, and certainly not get cancer! Well, yes, but I think that’s also oversimplifying things. That dictum does not take into account each individual’s unique and intricate karma. Nor that illness itself can clear karma and also deliver spiritual healing if one has the eyes to see the opportunity. But can’t it come in an easier way? Apparently, sometimes yes; sometimes nope.

presence of anyone, or anything, more still. She said she didn’t believe Katie’s illness was the result of any lack of spirituality on her part. So maybe illness is not a failure; maybe it’s actually a success ready to bloom all over our world, if only we look a little more closely for blossoms masquerading as thorns. If creating a life-threatening illness is not failing then perhaps we are never failing? Perhaps our only job is to bring back our experiences to the Father so that He may learn more about loving through us. Maybe we really can dance through this thing called life…

Reaching Out

I slowly started telling folks my story, with candor and vulnerability. It felt wonderfully freeing! My ministerial blessing is all about opening myself to receive. I recall Michael saying that if you won’t receive, you’ll be put in a position where you have to. Okay, okay, I get it...I started asking for light, prayers, seeds, prayer communion. I was overwhelmed by how graciously and lovingly folks received the news, and so I started telling everyone. I sent out emails asking for prayer communion and was bowled over by all the folks that showed up. I wept through most prayer communions, so grateful and moved by the loving being directed towards me. I posted on MSIA’s Heartreach list. Roxann told me the story of when Katie had a profound illness and was dying. Her lungs filled with fluid and she could not breathe. She said there was not a single argument in Katie with this reality. Katie was ultimately accepting and peaceful. At no time did Roxann experience any stress or confusion from her mother despite the dire, painful condition of her body. She said as long as she physically touched her mother, she too was peaceful and that it was the sweetest time of her life with her.

Healing Via Chanting and Other Alternative Therapies Just a few days before I was diagnosed, I had become a patient of Dr. Mark Holmes, a deeply studied and gifted Oriental Medical Doctor and MSIA minister. I shared my diagnosis with him and was moved by how highly intended he was towards my healing. It seemed to be a spiritual set up as Mark had been my client for four years before this, with the intention to deepen his spiritual attunement and ability. I was now a grateful recipient of our work together. I believe the clarity of his consciousness and the keys of healing he holds allowed me to receive the deeper medicine in his needles, herbs, hands, nutrition and presence.

. . .so I started slowing down and observing my thoughts and reframing them towards loving.

He did some fascinating techniques such as chanting the Ani-Hu outwardly, and his initiatory tone inwardly, directing the energies toward the cancer in the uterus. He also utilized a Chinese medical visualization technique to dissolve tumors that starts with “Dissolve” and progresses into ‘Disperse, scatter, dispel, come loose’ to ‘Completely break up’ to “Gone, disappear” and ending with “Healed, recovered, done, finished.” There is a viral video on the internet of a tumor shrinking (seen on ultrasound) as three Asian doctors utilized this technique (CLICK): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HecA7XRO7eQ Every session brought a new revelation of inhibitions towards freedom to sacrifice and spiritual expansion to live into. I was inwardly urged to jump off the cliff of what I knew, and Spirit was there through a sage and steady Mark, sometimes pushing, sometimes catching me. Through it all he demonstrated a spiritual mastery with healing to a level I have rarely experienced.

You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought J-R wrote the book, You Can’t Afford the Luxury of a Negative Thought for folks with life threatening illnesses. If I haven’t confessed enough already, here’s more. I didn’t think to pick that book up during my illness. However, I did make the concept my directive towards health. I started ‘babysitting’ my thoughts and subconscious beliefs. Roxann helped me to slow down my thoughts so I could be more aware of them. She explained a brilliant analogy from Byron Katie. She asked me, “Who would you rather be—a person burning a baby alive or the baby?” Of course, I said I’d rather be the baby. She told me that when I speak to myself unkindly I am being the person burning the baby, which feels awful. I didn’t want to be that person so I started slowing down and observing my thoughts and reframing them towards loving. I realized the cancer was an irrefutable message that I can no longer tolerate, perhaps even survive, my reaction to perceived oppression. A few days after

I was diagnosed, someone yelled harshly at me. I slowed down my thoughts and observed what I was saying to myself—things like “they don’t love me,” “they are a jerk,” “I want to die” …(seriously). I then realized how mean I’d be if I was saying these things to a woman who was just told she has cancer. So, in that very moment, I changed my thoughts to: “They love me—they are just hurting. I love me. God loves me. I am just going to walk away while they calm down…”

After I started sacrificing my inner critic and reframing my thoughts in a much more loving way, my outer relationships tended to reflect my sweeter inner relationship. I developed a mantra during this time about everything that occurred: “What’s good about this?”

Mark Holmes told me that according to Oriental medicine, worry weakens the immune system and that speaking kind words, thinking kind thoughts and winning in your fantasies I observed that if I pay atstrengthens the immune tention to my thoughts in system. CHH Lab two weeks before and wanted to do the USM Practicum the following week as well. I still had a 104 fever late Thursday night and Practicum was the next day, Friday, in retreat several hours’ drive away. I would need a miracle to go on my own to a seven day, fourteen-hour-a-day workshop. That night I offered up a fervent prayer for another ordinary miracle and drifted into a feverish sleep. I woke several times that night drenched in sweat. I changed my pajamas three times in the night. The next morning, I woke with no fever! I dressed, found a travel doctor to see my son, Joshua, who had just come home ill from India, took him to the doctor, came home, literally threw things in a suitcase, and collected son #2, Daniel, to drive him to his football game on the way to Practicum. He’s the Quarterback, the leader of the team, and if he was not on time, the coach would punish the whole team. We were running fifteen minutes late, yikes! I prayed for a time warp in our favor and magically traffic opened up at rush hour in LA. (That may be the biggest miracle of this whole deal.) We got there one minute early! I drove somewhat dreamily to the desert and walked into the Practicum classroom that evening, pale, thin and weak but spilling over with gratitude and delight.

Finally, I was ready to dialogue with the cancer cells. I freaked out my trio partners who said my entire voice, body and demeanor changed, that it was the cancer cells speaking, not me. You were not doing it another way. It’s been lifetimes coming. You have many gifts. It’s time to believe in yourself and use them. What do you want?” “I want to live. I want to be healed. I want to know true love. I want to say yes when I mean yes and no when I mean no. I want to do my work and classes. I want to know I will thrive. I want to believe I can go into remission right now. I want to be cancer free. I want to live.” Their very last words to me: “Very Good.” I saw the cells were birthing me, not killing me. I flooded them and myself with unconditioned forgiveness and love. I understood so much more how God loves all His creation.

The Second Biopsy. Ordinary Miracles, Indeed I went home and got the second biopsy. I got the improbable news that in just six weeks, with no medical intervention, the cancer had moved down to a much lesser grade, which meant I could have the lesser surgery My doctor was very surprised and could not explain it. We can, right? Love heals all and love healed me.

Spiritual Healing AND Surgery The surgery was scheduled for the next day. I did wonder about still doing the surgery at this point since I had received spiritual and physical healing. I recalled a story a friend told me. She had surgery scheduled for breast cancer. J-R told her she had received a major healing of her breasts. She asked if she still needed the surgery. He said, “I told you that you had received a spiritual healing. I did not say you were cancer free.” So perhaps having surgery does not refute also receiving spiritual healing. Perhaps they can go hand in

hand. Maybe one amplifies the other. Maybe spiritual healing comes in more than one form…and from the beginning of the diagnosis, I did believe I needed a surgery to clear karma and to be the arbiter of an upward change of consciousness. So, I prepared for surgery with Mark. We blessed my uterus. I affirmed it was not where my mothering or my womanhood reside. I thanked it profusely for wrapping my babies in loving and safety and said a tender goodbye to it. We then went outside, put all the karma I wanted to release with the knife into an etheric bag, tied it up with a physical, satisfyingly large, crackly log and tossed it down the mountain. We watched it bounce down and break up like the burden the character in the movie, The Mission, was carrying did. In fact, to encourage me to feel brave, positive and to keep sacrificing everything less than love, I listened to the song “Heaven and Earth” from The Mission over and over as they wheeled me into surgery and as I released consciousness.

Toes to the Fire, Moving Forward Because I did not allow them to remove more organs, I still need to be checked every three months for five years. I don’t mind my toes being held to the fire. I am stubborn and could backslide into the consciousness that allowed the illness. In my experience, change is not a fixed point, it’s a process that needs to be persisted in to move the dial and keep it spinning upward. As I write this article, just a few months out, I am embarrassed to see the things I have forgotten to live into daily. I hope I have made it abundantly clear that I don’t think I did anything special. I can’t even cure the cold I just got. I’m not going to judge myself (much)- I will just keep bending my knee in surrender to the God of love that healed me. It continues to be a day-by-day, moment-by-moment choice of whom I’m serving, especially since I have gone back to handling many responsibilities.

I was complete. Why? I had stopped doing and was simply being. No wonder my ministerial blessing says over and over, “There’s nothing for you to do but to simply be and receive.” I so want to emulate J-R when he said, “What I do is done from the state of being, or I don’t do it.” That’s my lofty goal to aspire to. Um, I mean that’s my divine way of being to live into. I can no longer think I can afford the luxury of a negative thought or allow myself to be in a toxic environment for too long. I must remember to slow down my thoughts and to speak kindly to myself and others. To take care of myself first so I may help take care of others. I am highly motivated to remain, or at least return to, the expanded, loving, and at times impeccable consciousness that put me in the place to receive healing.

This experience has given me more faith to believe in ordinary miracles and endless possibilities. It taught me that matter is really consciousness and that life responds Speaking of which, I accomplished little the to our thoughts and vision. Passing it On I recently worked with a client who was diagnosed with cancer almost a year ago. He said he had been conditioned to adopt society’s perspective—that cancer is something to be fought against, feared and hated. I gently assisted him to dialogue with the cancer cells. He found the same thing I did: They were not against him. They were simply the arbiters of a life and death lesson about loving himself more. He wept at the experience of them loving him, him loving them and of how much he must love himself and God must love him. He’s now thriving. Will the cancer go away? We don’t know yet. But his experience of the cancer and of himself is transforming into one of loving and wonder instead of fear and hopelessness. I worked with another woman who approached things similarly and she has a clean bill of health. I want to emphasize that we can’t go for results—there are just too many karmic intricacies to consider— but we can always go for the loving. If a friend has cancer, please shower them in love. Perhaps don’t overwhelm them with “miracle stories” (including my own) or “cures” as everyone has their own unique destiny and karma—but trust they will find the path that is best for them. But do know your love heals.

of vibrant, radiant health as I serve and love others as I have been served and loved. My story, ongoing as it is, is yet another validation of the J-R tenet I am most in love with: “If you would know the secret of soul transcendence, look only for the good in people and things and leave all the rest to God.” Thank you, J-R and thank you, all. I love you.

Inverted Heart by Alicia Hayes

Today, sixteen years ago, my womb birthed a baby

with azure pools of light for eyes, drenching all in divine love. From that warm clutch, God individuated into a whimsical pied piper, achingly tender with little ones, yet who lunges through hundreds of pounds of testosterone and muscle for the touchdown. In the shape of an inverted heart, that blessed pouch gave me sons who hug me so tightly I gasp. Each time, I try to impart all my love, for all time, in case it’s our last time. For, today, too, I am told my womb is laden with cancer. How can a bowl of life spill death? Just as when I bathed, with my fingertips and rose water, my sister’s baby girl who was unspeakably beautiful, perfect and... stillborn. The only way it makes sense that the plush of creation could be the creaking armchair of destruction is that God knows better…. That, today, my womb is birthing me. That, she, like women do, is sacrificing herself for the greater good so I will cease doing so unnecessarily. The martyr within, with her darting eyes and pleated brow, must languidly lay herself out upon the pink rose strewn altar of unconditional self-loving.

Today, the womb of the Divine Mother is rebirthing me. She wraps the warm body of her love around me and croons, “I bequeath you the collective empowerment of your sisters’ birthing joy, forgetting all anguish, when they hold the only child of God in their arms. And you are all the only child of God.” She murmurs, “I speak love into the cells of your living temple that they may be fragrant, like a crushed rose winding, nonetheless, to the Light. I drip the honey of receiving onto your tongue. Let go, let go needing to be needed. Your beingness is sufficient.” I whisper, “Mother God, today, I lay down my life for you.” She demurs, “Then pick it up and truly live! Heart first, tongue first, swaggering with the fruits of your self-loving.” “Yes!” Today, the prickly pear of self-denial ripens into a juicy pomegranate dripping a sweet “Yes!” to life. Therefore, I will say No when I mean No. I will be true to myself. If I want love, I will be love. I will be free. Today, indeed, my womb is birthing me. Back to Table of Contents

They are a way for people to connect with the Spirit, gather together in loving, and have an opportunity to view their lives from a higher, spiritual perspective.

This personal, human contact of seminars seems particularly important nowadays. . .

I became personally aware how valuable seminars are when I was traveling this past year. They were a regular reminder for me to attune to the Light and the Traveler, and I looked forward to my weekly seminar a great deal. I watched folks attending for the first time get touched by the caring and energy present. The community that we created by coming together was like a family. This personal, human contact of seminars seems particularly important nowadays, in light of all the modern technology and current events. Yet more and more Seminar Leaders have been asking for help on how to share about seminars, especially with people who are new to MSIA. How can we offer seminars that speak to folks in today’s world?

One creative new approach is a themed seminar. A number of resources are now available for Seminar Leaders to offer a seminar on one of several themes, including:

After “closing” the seminar I made a clear announcement saying that the MSIA Seminar part was over and invited whoever wanted to stay for refreshments and to watch a movie together.

(1) blessings (2) forgiveness (3) gratitude (4) loving (5) meditation (6) peace

Participants stayed and later left filled with enthusiasm and gratitude.”

With these themes, Seminar Leaders can easily invite the community to their seminars by focusing on topics that are particularly relevant and meaningful for them (e.g., “An Evening of Forgiveness”, or “An Afternoon of Peace”, or a “Blessings Gathering”). Seminar Leaders around the world are already experimenting with themed seminars. They’re reporting wonderful feedback on the sacredness of the seminars and the positive response from their communities. Here are just a few examples: Carolina Rodrigues from Bogota, Colombia offered a peace seminar last October, and here’s what she wrote about her gathering: “On October 29, I led an MSIA seminar with J-R’s video “The Peace Process”. After the seminar, participants shared their concerns about the peace in Colombia and placed in the Light their own processes of peace. The Spirit was present and it was a liberating experience, filled with joy and peace. There were 10 ministers and 2 new people in attendance.

 In Victoria, Canada, Inger Hansen offered a seminar on forgiveness after the U.S election in November. Here’s what she shared about her experience: “From my personal experience with the election a Forgiveness seminar was my choice of this week’s seminar. After calling in the Light we each read from J-R’s Forgiveness book and shared the meaning with each other. Then, we listened to the Meditation of Forgiveness in the Joyful Meditations packet, followed by contributions. We then gathered in a circle where each shared and asked for personal forgivenesses. It was a meaningful experience for us as we continued with refreshments and conversations.”  For Christmas, Marina Bustamente from Madrid, Spain offered a peace seminar. Here’s what she did: “I’d love to share with you. This is what was done:  Welcome to all that came to the Seminar  What is MSIA? Brief explanation, including who is J-R and who is John Morton, Mystical Traveler.  I asked for the Light for the group.  Ani Hu chant.

BLESSINGS FORGIVENESS

 We listened to a blessing from the CD accompanying the book You Are the Blessings, by John Morton.  We listened to the Meditation for Peace by John-Roger.  Then a closed eye process, opening to receive from the Universe, with open hands. Participants receive a small present and a card with a J-R or JM quote.  Participant sharing about the quote they have received in their card. (Everyone received a different blessing.)  Final blessing for “An evening of Peace”: Process where participants hold hands and we all say: “I love you. God Bless you. Peace, be still” In closing we did a drawing to give away two J-R books and a CD. Then we moved into refreshments, with laughter, hugs and joy. I also did promotion of upcoming seminars.

MEDITATION PEACE

At Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens in Los Angeles, we recently held two themed seminars - “An Evening of Forgiveness” and “An Evening of Gratitude”. We had a full room for both events, and most participants were new to MSIA! The quality of sharing was beautiful, and folks seemed to really enjoy the events. For example, right from the outset, participants were openly sharing what forgiveness and gratitude mean to them. Toward the end, someone commented how we’d created a family in our time together. Folks hung around for a while afterward drinking tea, eating cookies and socializing. A wonderful time of fellowship. 

“Moving your inner awareness into your Soul is easy, but it’s just as easy to lose that awareness.

You can fall out of awareness because the world doesn’t seem to support spiritual awakening. Spirit lets you in easily, but It has to give way to the materiality of the world. The material world has a billion distractions, so it’s necessary to watch where you place your focus and your motivation for creating what you want. If you want to know God, keep your eyes on God.” - John-Roger DSS, Founder of MSIA

The MSIA Ministry The MSIA ministry is for initiates of the Traveler who are called inwardly to serve the spirit of their hearts. Service may be in any form, from volunteering for the Church to assisting people in need or organizations that serve those people, and anything in between. The only requirement is that the ministry is active and done regularly. MSIA ministers may perform services, like marriages, that clergy of other denominations are authorized to do as long as they comply with the laws of the locality in which they serve. People who have received initiation into the Sound Current through the Traveler may request an Application for Ordination packet from: .JOJTUFSJBM 4FSWJDFT *O "DUJPO r 8 "EBNT #MWE -PT "OHFMFT $" @msiaorg

Initiation Students in MSIA have an opportunity to be initiated through the Mystical Traveler Consciousness into the Sound Current, the audible stream of energy that comes from the heart of God. The levels of initiation in MSIA correspond to levels of consciousness both within and outside each person: astral (relating to the imagination), causal (relating to the emotions), mental (relating to the mind), etheric (paralleling the unconscious), and Soul (relating to who we truly are). There are also initiations above the Soul level. The astral initiation happens in the “night travel (dream state) after a person has in some way come in contact with the Mystical Traveler; it is not anchored physically at that time, and the person may do no more with it in their lifetime. The next initiation is the causal, which can generally take place (be anchored) after two years of study with the Soul Awareness Discourses. (The astral initiation is anchored at the same time as the causal initiation.) Successive initiations are mental, etheric, and Soul. If you are just starting the Soul Awareness Discourses, Discourse #1 explains initiation into the Sound Current. You may choose to study the Discourses with the intention of being initiated or simply read them as information. This is up to you. If you do choose to study toward initiation, you need to write a letter as soon as you have decided and then email (or mail) it to the Traveler, saying that you are doing this. If you write this letter, the Traveler works with you more closely, and you may notice a greater spiritual awareness in your consciousness as this inner work goes on. After two years of study with the Discourses and if you have written and sent your intention letter to the Traveler, you can apply for causal initiation, generally when you have completed Discourse 24. The Traveler will look into your request, and you may be offered the opportunity for initiation. For astral/causal, mental, etheric, and Soul initiations, the person meets with an initiator and is given an initiation “tone (the name of God for each realm that applies to the tone), which the initiate chants inwardly during spiritual exercises. These initiation tones are charged with spiritual energy by the Traveler Consciousness for each person individually, and the Traveler assists the student in clearing enough karma on one level to be initiated into the next level. For the levels of initiation above the Soul level, no initiation tone is given physically. For more information about initiation, you could read the chapter called Initiation in John-Roger’s book Fulfilling Your Spiritual Promise (available in paper and electronic versions). And we also recommend these seminars by John-Roger: “Initiation—Molding the Golden Chalice The key seminar about studying towards initiation and being an initiate. Available in CD and MP3 formats. “The Sound Current: The Road Home An excellent overview of MSIA and initiation. Available in DVD and MP3 formats.
