THE POLISH ECONOMY
Invest in Poland Poland is becoming more and more important in Europe, which is not merely the result of a GDP growth of 3.6% last year. At present, we are ranked 6th in the EU and 21st worldwide. Poland is the world’s third-largest producer of apples, third-largest producer of buses in the European Union and the fourth-largest furniture manufacturer. Therefore, more foreign investors are deciding to choose our country. Such well-known companies such as Amazon, Volkswagen and Orange have already opted for Poland as relatively low costs of employment offer highly-educated employees-to-be. In terms of the Gross Domestic Product, Poland ranks sixth in the European Union and twenty-first worldwide. According to the Central Statistical Office, the GDP value totaled PLN 1 billion 789.7 million in 2015, thus marking an increase of 4.37%. Poland is also a country with dynamic economic growth. In 2009, the GDP increased by 1.7%, the only increase in the EU, and in 2014 it reached 3.6% where it remained throughout last year as well. According to Enrique Diaz-Alvarez, risk assessment director at the International Payment Institution Ebury, Poland is one of the fastest-developing markets of the EU and its debt-to-GDP ratio is one of the lowest throughout Europe. Its debt is decreasing and the deficit in relation to its 2015 GDP was the lowest in the last 8 years. In his opinion, strong economic growth going beyond 3.5% should keep the deficit relatively low in relation to the GDP, thus bringing Poland closer to the Euro-zone countries. Our country remains attractive for foreign investors. Over the last 25 years, foreign companies, mostly from Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Luxemburg, South Korea and China, have made investments worth about EUR 270 billion. Until now German companies have invested nearly EUR 30 billion in Poland. Volkswagen is one of the largest investors and 8 / POZNAŃ fair Magazine
the company is to open a new commercial VW Crafter factory in the autumn. The investment, worth nearly a billion euro, will provide at least three thousand jobs. The largest investors also involve Spanish companies which have invested EUR 10.8 billion in Poland so far. The record came in 2011 when the Iberia-based companies invested EUR 4.3 billion in the Polish market. Companies such as OHL, Ferrovial and Acciona invested in the infrastructure sector while Banco Santander, owner of BZ WBK bank, was the most active in the banking sector. Gamesa, Eólica, Iberdrola and Acciona likewise entered the Polish energy market. Not only European investors, however, are interested in Poland. There are more and more American research and development companies operating in Poland. According to data by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham), nearly 50 thousand employees, engineers and IT experts in Poland are involved in research and development activities in companies with American capital. Polish enterprises are also doing well thanks to their cooperation with foreign partners. Operating for more than 20 years, Solaris Bus & Coach, located in Bolechowo near Poznań, has recently won a tender and will produce 300 buses for the transport company, Cotral, based in Rome. This is the company’s second large contract worth nearly EUR 110 million. In its 20-year-
THE POLISH ECONOMY
long history the company from Bolechowo has produced more than 13 thousand vehicles which are used in more than 600 cities in 30 different countries around the world. On the other hand, a container terminal, which will dispatch loads to Rotterdam and Milan, was opened in Swarzędz in September 2015. Four years ago, Clip commenced cooperation with ERS Railways, a private railway company. Thanks to the cooperation of both entities, a rail link between Swarzędz, Rotterdam and Krefeld was opened. Ever since 2012 the terminal has received 1,700 trains. The Intermodal Rail Terminal included in the modern logistics center (Clip), which occupies an area of 170 hectares, cost nearly PLN 100 million. Due to that investment created with EU funds, more than 5 thousand people were employed.
Why is it worth choosing Poland? As a member state of the European Union with a stable and growing economy Poland has an ideal geographical location where East-West and North-South trade routes cross. Transportation, with road transportation in particular, is developing dynamically and three new highways have been opened in the last three years alone: the A1 connecting the northern coast with the central part of the country, the A4 connecting Wrocław with the Silesian region and Cracow, and the A2 connecting Germany with the capital city, Warsaw. Poland has many highly-qualified employees with 17.5% of Poles holding a degree. There are 453 higher schools of education offering learning to nearly 1.7 million students. More and more young Poles speak foreign languages better, so finding a qualified employee in Poland is not such a big problem, especially with the unemployment at 10%. It must be emphasized that by investing in Poland, entrepreneurs pay lower employment contributions compared to western countries as the payment, particularly for blue-collar workers, is still far behind the European average. Special economic zones (SEZ), which are areas offering preferable conditions for running business activities, provide other opportunities for investors. The entrepreneurs who receive a permit to operate in such a zone are granted public aid of tax exemption, for instance. In Poland there are 14 special economic zones located in 162 cities and 232 municipalities. Total investments within the zones exceeded PLN 100 billion. Benefits for investors operating within an SEZ include income tax exemption, access to attractive plots with all the utilities and infrastructure as well as a possibility to purchase or rent the real estate already existing in the zone. Companies operating in such areas are also exempted from property tax. Other incentives
include investment grants, possibilities to apply for grants at district employment offices in order to employ the unemployed and create new workplaces, and administrative support of the SEZ management companies regarding legal and organizational matters connected with the investment. Investors may still count on a relatively high rate of return from invested capital. Although that depends on the sector, it is still worth giving it some thought. Poland is among those developing markets which have stable medium-term growth prospects. While there is a far lower investment risk compared to Asian states, for example, profits are only slightly lower. The Polish economy currently faces significant challenges including the need to raise the level of innovation in its companies as well as popularizing these innovations abroad. This mostly concerns small and medium-size companies which follow a traditional business model; however, there is still not enough outlay on scientific research, new production technologies and innovative sale methods. This is due in part to an insufficient amount of accumulated capital which could be allotted to finance the research, and entrepreneurs being passive to take such risks. For a few years we have been observing an increase in that area, though. The SII (Summary Innovation Index) is rising more quickly in the case of Poland than most other European Union countries. That is a chance to make up for lagging behind for so many years and a great opportunity for the investors who are now getting involved in the Polish market. The Polish economy needs capital invested in providing support for innovative solutions, which is a chance for great profits in the nearest future. The economic policy carried out by the Polish government is slowly turning towards companies which are implementing innovations in their activity. New incentives, mostly regarding taxes, are to be expected and they will be a chance for further development, especially in the hi-tech sector, IT, logistics and highly-automated industrial production. There is a possibility to take advantage of European funds which is best proven by the program Innovative Economy co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the state budget. The perspective for the years 2014-2020 supports companies investing in research and development as well as so-called startup companies even more than the previous one. Thanks to all of this, investing in Poland is not only more profitable, particularly in the medium and long run, but it also offers a significantly lower risk than in other parts of the globe. INNOVATION
What is innovation? What does it mean to be innovative? These are intriguing questions which cannot be answered. For the Poznań International Fair innovation is looking into the future, searching for places which others consider problematic and using the existing potential to implement new ideas. Being innovative means not giving up and going upstream. Research and development, new technologies, international patents, commercialization of inventions, transferring knowledge onto the economiclevel and shaping higher education for business are and will continue to be crucial to the economic development of Poland. Knowledge, ideas, needs and research shaped in the minds of young people have to be supported by experienced and successful enterprises which are willing to share them with the coming generations.
50% of the researched start-ups have indicated a more extended network of contacts as a current need; every fourth start-up feels it is necessary to extend specialist knowledge. Source:“Polish Start-ups Report 2016”, Startup Poland Foundation, Warsaw, 2016
Looking ahead and trying to fulfill the needs of start-up companies, the Poznań International Fair will launch the SMART WAY acceleration program for start-ups as the first exhibition center in Europe. Its aim is to introduce start-ups to Poland in order to power up business in Europe and beyond. Considering young companies as the future, the Poznań Fair wants to become a part of their ecological awareness. The events organized by the PIF are a real business platform and venue where consumers meet suppliers, investors meet customers and sellers meet buyers all at the same time. Here, at an array of events held by the Poznań International Fair, 650 thousand world professionals get together annually. They discuss new solutions, present their products, search for development possibilities at home and abroad and stimulate innovation. It is time to come up with new perspectives for young entrepreneurs and beginning start-ups in order to give them possibilities to commercialize innovation, transfer science and knowledge into the area of business, most of all, however, to give chances to accelerate, which is a natural consequence of using fair events as a direct marketing measure for the promotion of a company. 10 / POZNAŃ fair Magazine
SECTORS SUPPORTED BY THE SMART WAY PROGRAM: Construction, energy/environment protection, computer games, medicine/life science, automotive, industry, agriculture, food, transport/ storage/logistics. We have experience in publishing. Poznań Fair Magazine has been published for over 55 years without interruption, and is read around the world by representatives of the business world, economic self-government and diplomatic corps. Industry magazines we publish allow businesses to reach potential clients. They are the first magazines of their kind on the Polish market. Our offer includes Rybomania Trade – a magazine specifically for fishing shops; the Omega trend book for the funeral industry with information about new trends and social phenomena; and Horse Business Club magazine with advice on establishing, running, maintaining and managing horse farms and agrotourism farms with horse-riding services.
Numerous competitions and awards increase the recognition of products exhibited during the fair. These prestigious prizes highlight a product’s excellence and consequently form part of its promotion on the market. The two most recognised competitions during Poznań International Fair are the MTP Gold Medal competition for the best products exhibited, and the Acanthus Aureus competition for the best-designed exhibition booths that boost a company’s marketing strategy. Individual industry events also organise their own competitions, including the TOP DESIGN Award promoting high-quality industrial design, Tastes of the Regions Fair Medal for the best regional food products, Grand Prix Gardenia for the best plant products, Grand Prix Sawo for the best products and technical solutions in occupational safety, fire safety and rescue services, Motor Show Awards awarded by the most accomplished automotive journalists, and PGA Awards for small and medium developer studios exhibiting their games in the Indie Games zone during Poznań Game Arena.
We organise less-formal meetings. Poznań Fair has always been a place for international meetings, the exchange of goods and services, business experiences and the mixing of cultures. The best example is the GIN DOBRY CLUB – an international and intercultural club established back in the 1960s. This tradition was initiated by William Kirton and James Lindsay, exhibitors and representatives of companies taking part in the fair. At their neighbouring booths, Polish visitors were introduced to the custom of drinking a glass of gin at noon – to celebrate the start of international business meetings. This custom is still alive today. Gin Dobry Club has nearly 1,000 members from around the world, including ambassadors, politicians, university rectors, presidents of industry associations, representatives of science and culture, and leaders of Polish and international business.

Bartosz Zeidler, Product Group Director Due to regulations and ecology as well as measurable savings, when it comes to using a building in the long run, energysaving and passive constructions are solutions which customers are opting for more and more often. From 2021 on, all new buildings are to be zero-energy - such is the requirement of the European Union. Slightly earlier, from 2019, the same requirements will apply to all public utility facilities. The contemporary construction industry is trying to minimize energy losses by setting new challenges. Is the sector ready for that? BUDMA provides answers to all these questions. This is when the leading construction companies showcase their latest products and technologies. This will be the third time BUDMA has been a venue for several market premieres as part of the BUDMA Premiere Club. As usual, the fair’s agenda will offer a substantive program of events. We will discuss the most important concepts of energy saving and passive construction and their advantages, the benefits of using renewable energies as well as innovative insulation solutions and technologies used in non-residential buildings and passive halls.

In the coming years, European funds will be the most important stimulus for improving the condition of infrastructure construction. Thanks to the new financial perspective for the period 2014-2020 under the Cohesion Policy Program, Poland will receive a record-breaking EUR 82.5 billion including EUR 25.8 billion planned for infrastructure. What’s important, construction companies operating in Poland are planning to extend their activities abroad with a view to secure their businesses after 2020. Joanna Kucharska, Director of ITM Poland The metal industry is one of the fastest developing sectors of the Polish economy, yet it is very vulnerable to a wide-range of hazards including market fragmentation (there is a large share of small and medium-size companies), production capacity surplus reaching up to 30-40% as well as a dependence upon other sectors such as the construction, railway, foundry casting and motoring industries. Despite all the hazards and thanks to successfully finding expansion opportunities, the metal industry, as well as the related machine sector, is constantly growing. The companies which concentrate on innovation and advanced technological solutions always finish in the black in spite of any economic havoc. They are the foundation upon which the competitive advantage is built. Along with a good economic situation for the furniture and machine industries, Poland’s largest industrial fair ITM Poland is growing as well. The Innovations-Technologies-Machines Poland fair is ahead of its time elbowing the way for other Polish companies which, following Industry 4.0, are not at a standstill but are constantly searching for new methods of optimizing their processes, boosting effectiveness, quality and efficiency. As our research shows, at the Poznań Fashion Fair most visitors look for domestic brands. Therefore, we decided to start the Polish Fashion project which gathers leading companies under a common logo. This way it is easier to stand out from the competition. The Polish Fashion logo is given to companies which solely base their production in Poland. By choosing brands tagged with the Polish Fashion logo, you can be certain about a collection’s top quality, modern design and the fact that it was designed by some of the best Polish specialists. Paying attention to the country of origin is a trend which is observable on the Polish market. Another trend is the appearance of young brands offering unique clothing, footwear, jewelry and leather goods, which are quite often customized. Due to its business character, the Poznań Fashion Fair supports Polish producers and designers in reaching foreign contractors and also helps foreign brands in entering Polish shops.

Elżbieta Roeske Product Group Director The Poznań Fashion Fair is distinguished by a combination of business and fashion. Poznań concentrates more on contracting rather than visual issues. In order to support domestic clothes and footwear producers we came up with the Polish Fashion program. By means of a range of promotional activities, the program makes it possible for producers and designers to strengthen their image among business clients and consumers which in turn leads to boosting sales. The website www.polskamoda.pl is one of its several elements where all essential information concerning these Polish companies can be found. The zone BezliQ is another important part of the Poznań Fashion Fair exposition. Here we promote young designers, facilitate contacts with traders and cooperate with quality brands searching for talented designers. The theme of arena DESIGN 2017 is SENSES, because it is difficult not to see the strong relation between design and the sensations that reach the recipients and influence their choices. The senses also make us find many-sided sensitivity which enables us to understand the surrounding world in a better way. VIVA light 2017 – it is the third edition of the project organised as a part of arena DESIGN, and it activates creative individuals who care about the widely understood development of lighting design. The idea of the project is the belief in creative abilities of people from different environments. This is why we create an active forum of interaction and cooperation between open-minded people, who think unconventionally, from different fields: light designers and architects, engineers, technologists, producers, innovative materials and lighting technology suppliers.
Małgorzata Czubak Director of arenaDESIGN As the organizer of arenaDESIGN, we have been observing a broadening awareness regarding the benefits of entrepreneurs cooperating with designers year after year. Therefore, under the FORUM zone we try to extend that knowledge by discussing trends, issues and opportunities given by industrial design. How do you create an attractive product? What model of cooperation should you use between entrepreneur and designer? How do you determine the right platform of communication between all the specialists involved in the project? We try to answer these questions and more, thus inspiring event participants to find worthwhile and interesting design solutions.

CAVALIADA is a strong brand which is easily recognizable in the equestrian world in Europe and around the world by world-class competitors, horse and horse-riding enthusiasts and others. We particularly concentrate on families with children as we try to popularize horse riding and alternative pastimes. CAVALIADA TOUR’s packed grandstands and tickets which often sell out a month in advance prove that equestrian sports are experiencing an age of Renaissance and are coming back to a time of glory. We are focusing on the history and role of horse riding throughout the history of Poland and are trying to encourage an attitude of responsibility and care towards the environment. By means of the Polish Breeding Pavilion we wish to promote Polish breeding and emphasize the strength of the Polish equestrian sector. Everyone looking to increase their knowledge and find out something new about horses has a chance to participate in lectures and trainings organized by the Equestrian University. Apart from theory, there are also other practical activities which consist of workshops and trainings featuring horses. On top of the exciting sports competition participated in by world-class riders, the fair houses an exposition on horse riding equipment and articles. A large number of buyers, seeing that horse riding is practiced by nearly 300,000 people in Poland, exert a great influence upon the exhibitors who look to book exhibition areas in advance for each of the CAVALIADA cities.
