Amióta Isten agyagból és vízből megformálta az első embert, majd lelket lehelt belé, az ’új Ádámok’ folyamatosan homunculusokat, gólemeket és robotokat készítenek. A műemberek megalkotásának talán legnagyobb kérdése, hogy miért is hozzuk létre őket. A sumer és görög mitológiában ugyanúgy megtaláljuk a műemberekről szóló leírásokat, ahogyan a zsidó misztikában, a reneszánsz idején, vagy modern korunkban. Isten teremtése a születés csodájában újra és újra megismétlődik, mégis valamiért imitálni szeretnénk azt a gesztust, amikor életet lehelünk egy magunk alkotta tárgyba. („Engem az Isten teremtett, de művészként magam is teremtek” – mondta Thury Levente.) Talán a teremtény fölötti uralkodás vágya hajt bennünket, esetleg a hiábavaló munkák elvégzése alól szeretnénk kibújni. Elképzelhető, hogy a teremtő szó misztériuma vonz bennünket, hogy az isteni igét egy cédulán a teremtett lény szájába téve, vagy a homlokára írva, lelket adjunk az élettelen agyagtömbnek. Amikor meg kell védenünk magunkat és népünket a veszedelemtől, akkor szükség lehet egy emberfeletti szupererő beavatkozására.

Olyankor folyamodunk tehát a misztikához, a csodához vagy a titkos tudományhoz, amikor a természetfelettitől kérünk segítséget helyzetünk, sorsunk jobbítása érdekében.

A 16. században, II. Rudolf német-római császár – aki egyben cseh és magyar király is volt – uralkodása idején a prágai gettóban a kabbalista hagyományt kiválóan ismerő Júda Lőw rabbi a legenda szerint egy hatalmas Gólemet alkotott, hogy megvédje népét, ha fenyegetés éri. Különféle történetek keringenek arról, mi történt azután, hogy az immár lélekkel is bíró agyagbábu beteljesítette küldetését, de ezek mindegyikében közös, hogy a teremtmény fellázadt alkotója ellen, aki csak csellel tudta kivenni szájából az írott pergament, vagy letörölni homlokáról a teremtés igéjét, hogy megsemmisítse, visszaküldje őt a porba. Ennek a rabbinak egyik leszármazottja a családi hagyomány szerint Thury Levente, az 1941-ben Budapesten született szobrász és keramikus, aki továbbvitte a családi tradíciót és életműve jelentős részében gólemeket alkotott. Talán ugyanaz a szándék vezette, mint az őt megelőző gólem- vagy homunculus-készítőket. „A gólemkészítő továbbá közli, hogy még szándékában áll több gólemet készíteni, amik személyiségének óriási részét kitöltő féltve őrzött emléktárgyhalom elhelyezésére szolgálhatnak, vagy életre keltőivé válhatnak. Majd”1 – írta. Apai felmenője, Thury Baltazár II. Rudolf császártól kapta nemesi címerét és oklevelét, attól az uralkodótól, akinek a legenda szerint Lőw rabbi a horoszkópját is elkészítette, és akivel együttműködve népe végül megmenekült a vérvádaktól. (A nemesi oklevél eredetije Rudolf császár pecsétjével és aláírásával ma is a család birtokában van.) A 20. századi utódban nem csupán genetikailag találkozott a két ág: elképzelése szerint a két ős, Lőw rabbi és Thury Baltazár kapcsolatban is volt egymással. A családi legendák és a prágai zsidó mítoszok tovább élnek Levente munkáiban. A csehországi zsinagóga padlásán máig megtalálható a Gólem „maradéka”, amely porból Levente az ott szolgáló rabbitól egy kis üvegcsényit kapott, amit szerencsetalizmánként, amulettként őr-

zött. „A prágai Ó-új zsinagóga padlásának törmeléke, amelyben benne lehet a Lőw rabbi által összetört fellázadt gólem néhány porcikája. Vagy csak azt hiszem. De akkor is ugyanolyan fontos.”

Thury Levente munkásságában kezdettől fogva végigkövethetjük a gólemalkotás vágyát, már a családi hagyomány megismerése előtt is emberalakokkal, arcokkal, szemekkel díszítette a kerámiáit. Az Iparművészeti Főiskola elvégzése (1965) után készült funkcionális tárgyain, edényein tűnnek fel először arcok és apró emberi figurák. A Panelházak panelkái (1978) sorozat mázas kerámiáinak emberkéi esztétikumot és derűt kölcsönöznek minden olyan helyszínnek, ahol feltűnnek. A kerámia földközeli alapanyagával, az agyaggal, a vízzel és a színes mázzal nem csak a természettel való összhangot élhetjük újra, hanem a játékosság élményéhez is közelebb kerülhetünk.

A nyolcvanas évektől a funkcionális kerámiát hátrahagyva, a gólem mítosz került munkásságának és gondolkodásának középpontjába, ekkortól nevezi magát gólemkészítőnek. A prágai zsidó hagyomány nyomán az emberalakoknak mindig valamiféle lelkiséget kölcsönzött, ezzel fejezte ki mindazt, amit számára az agyagból való teremtés misztikuma és a lélekátadás gesztusa jelentett. Amerikában, az 1990-es évek végén készült gólemtorzóit a kabbalista misztika szféráiról nevezte el, az alkotások a Malkhut (Királyság), Chesed (Kegyelem), Tiferet (Szépség), Bináh (Megértés) és Chochma (Bölcsesség) címeket kapták. Az emberi test és psziché egysége, valamint az önismeret bölcsessége, illetve az oda vezető út olvasható ki agyagszobraiból, amit az E-G-O-L-E-M című tárlat (Bálint Közösségi Ház, Budapest, 1996) címe is jelez. „Minden teremtmény tökéletlenebb, mint a teremtője. Magam is gólem vagyok és az általam készített gólemek nálam is tökéletlenebbek” – írja.

Mintha azonosítaná a Gólemet a teremtőjével, és eldönthetetlenné, sőt lényegtelenné tenné a köztük lévő különbségeket. „Feltételeztem, hogy embert akarok faragni magamból. Agyagembert…” „Úgy tűnt, hogy a folyamat visszafordítható, az ember lassan gólemmé válhat…”

Thury kezdetben egészen apró gólemeket készített. Később egyre növekedtek, végül emberméretűvé váltak, ahogyan a Kiscelli Múzeumban 1995-ben rendezett kiállítás földön alvó alakjainál, illetve a Böhönye (1969), az Ülő Gólem (1998) vagy a Rövid történet az ideától a koleszterinen át a szénhidrátig (2003) című munkákon is látjuk. A páros gólemek gyengéd érzéseket közvetítenek a meghitt szerelmi vagy szülő-gyermek kapcsolatokról, pl. Összebújós (1990), Malkhut (1990), Két fej, A gólem naplója, Az agyag útja Gólemen át Gólemáig (1988). Több művét a mozgathatósággal keltette életre, a beléjük épített mechanika révén. A kinetikus szobrok így az élet jeleit, a dinamikát is képesek voltak felmutatni. A konstrukciók többsége idővel működésképtelenné vált, de ma is őrzik lelkületüket és plasztikai lendületüket – még alkotójukat is túlélve.

A Szagos mozgó micsodák, tér és gondolat tákolmányok című, 2002-ben a Budapest Galériában rendezett kiállítására Thury valamennyi érzékszervünkre ható, emberi ösztönöket és cselekedeteket felmutató gólemeket alkotott, amelyekhez különféle szagokat is rendelt. Ezzel egységbe hozta a természetességet és az életszerűséget, hiszen a hétköznapi matériákat magasztos eszmékről, gondolatokról szóló szövegfoszlányokkal kísérte. A szagos kiállításra készített egyik munkájának címével felidézte Szép Ernő Emberszag című novelláját, utalva ezzel a vészkorszakra.

Az emberméretű gólemek, miután teljesítették küldetésüket, a készítő keze alatt darabokra hullottak, széttöredeztek. Mondhatjuk, hogy Thury gólem-elemei a hozzájuk mellékelt szövegekkel együtt válnak egésszé. A hatalmas, kisgyermekarcokat idéző, sokszor csodálkozó tekintetű fejek mellett a kezek és más testrészek, torzók dominálnak. Mindezekkel Thury Levente a gondolkodó ész és a cselekvő kéz egységét és jelentőségét hangsúlyozta, a felfelé és lefelé figyelés kettősségének fontosságát. A szobortöredékeket különféle textíliákkal, talált tárgyakkal, pénzérmékkel egészítette ki, hangsúlyozva azok életszerűségét. A ruhadarabok önálló, emberszerű lényekké teszik a gólemeket, így azok töredékességükben teljesednek ki, kelnek életre. Az irodalmi idézetekkel, textustöredékekkel pedig beszélő, gondolkodó lényekké válnak. Mintha a 20-21. századi bölcs gólemkészítő pergamenre írta volna a szövegeit, és az agyagemberek szájába dugta volna, hogy helyette mondják ki a világról vallott, sokszor szarkasztikus nézeteit. „Egy tárgy, vagy személy, amelyiknek mutatni kellene, hogy az érzelmi töltés lehet erősebb, mint a megöregedett, megvastagodott test korlátozott tánctechnikája.” „Gondolom és olvasom, hogy a világ mindig elromlik. Aztán mindig a hangyák építik fel az új világokat.” A keretek, lécek, szorítók közé helyezett kezek és fejek a leláncoltság, bezártság testi élményét közvetítik, ám a fejben megszülető gondolatok szabadsága mindezt ellensúlyozva túllép rajtuk és új eszmeiséggel tölti meg a lélekkel telített agyagtorzókat.

Since God has formed the first man of clay and water, then breathed life into him, the “new Adams” have persistently been producing homunculi, golems and robots. The most fundamental question of creating artificial people is arguably why we actually produce them. Descriptions of artificial people can be found in the Ancient Sumer and Greek mythology, in Jewish mysticism, in the Renaissance period as well as in our modern age. God’s creation is repeated time and time again as the wonder of birth and yet for some reason we feel the need to imitate the gesture of breathing life into an object created by ourselves. (“I was created by God but in my quality of artist, I am the one doing the creation” – said Levente Thury.) We may be driven by the desire to dominate our creature or want to evade run-of-the-mill chores. Maybe we are attracted by the Creator’s mystery and we, too, want to give soul to a lifeless lump of clay by pushing the divine verb written on a piece of paper into the mouth of the created being or by writing it onto its forehead. When it comes to the need to protect ourselves and our people from

peril, we may need the intervention of a superhuman force. Therefore, we turn to mysticism, wonder or knowledge by asking for the help of the supernatural to improve our situation or fate.

According to a legend, in the 16th century, under the rule of Rudolf II Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary and Bohemia, Judah Loew, a famous rabbi from the Prague ghetto, who had a deep knowledge of the kabbalistic traditions, fashioned a huge golem so that it can protect his people in case it got into danger. Various stories are in circulation about what happened after the clay figurine had completed its mission but they all agree that the creature rebelled against its creator who had to resort to a trick to retrieve the written parchment from its mouth or wipe the verb of creation from its forehead in order to send it back to the dust.

The family legend holds that Levente Thury, sculptor and ceramic artist born in 1941 in Budapest is a descendant of this rabbi. He continued the family tradition of creating golems, which makes up a significant part of his œuvre. It is possible that he was led by the same intention as other golem and homunculus creators before him. “A golem creator says that he intends to produce more golems that could serve to keep his assortment of treasured souvenirs, making up a huge part of his personality, or even to animate these keepsakes. Later.”, he wrote.1 His paternal ancestor, Baltazár Thury received his coat of arms and grant of arms from the emperor Rudolf II. According to a legend, Rabbi Loew drew up the emperor’s horoscope and worked together with him to save his people from the blood libel.

(The original letter patent with the signature and stamp of emperor Rudolf is still in family possession.) Their 20th century descendant joins these two lineages in a way that is more than purely genetical: he believes that his two ancestors, Rabbi Loew and Baltazár Thury even knew each other. Family legends and Jewish myths from Prague live on in Levente’s work. The “remains” of the Golem are still to be found in the attic of the Czech synagogue and Levente was given a vial of its dust by the rabbi in charge there, which the artist kept as a good luck talisman or an amulet. ”It is rubble from the attic of the old new synagogue in Prague, which might contain some remains of the rebel golem, smashed by Rabbi Loew. It may be only an illusion but even so, it is just as important to me.”

We can follow the desire to create golems in Levente Thury’s work from beginning to end; he decorated his ceramics with human figures, faces and eyes even before learning about the family tradition. Faces and small human figures appear first on his functional objects and bowls produced after finishing the College of Applied Arts. The small glazed ceramic tile figurines in his series Panelházak panelkái (Little Blocks of Tower Blocks, 1978) bring aesthetics and serenity anywhere they

appear. The down-to-earth raw materials of ceramics, clay, water and glaze colour, not only allow us to relive harmony with nature but they also bring us closer to the experience of playfulness.

From the eighties, Thury takes leave of functional ceramics and the golem myth becomes the centre of his work and thinking. He starts calling himself a golem maker around this time. In keeping with the Prague Jewish tradition, he always gives his figurines some sort of spirit, expressing thereby what the mysticism of creation from clay and the gesture of soul transfer means. He named his golem torsos made in California in 1990 after the spheres of the kabbalist mysticism: these works received the titles Malkhut (Crown), Chesed (Kindness), Tiferet (Beauty), Binah (Understanding) and Chochma (Wisdom). His clay figures convey the unity of the human body and psyche, the wisdom of self-knowledge, as well as the journey leading there, as also indicated by the title of the exhibition E-G-O-L-E-M (Bálint Közösségi Ház [Bálint Community House], Budapest, 1996). “Any creature is less perfect than its creator. I am a golem myself and golems made by me are even less perfect than me”, he writes. He sounds as if he identified golems with their creator and would make them indistinguishable or make differences between them appear unsignificant. “An ascending clay man or a descending golem.

I imagine now, it might as well be the other way around.” “It appeared that the process was reversible and a human could slowly become a golem…”

Thury started making quite tiny golems. Later, they became ever bigger, as seen in the case of the figurines sleeping on the ground at the 1995 exhibition at the Kiscelli Museum or in the case of the works Böhönye (1969), Ülő Gólem (Sitting Golem, 1998) or Rövid történet az ideától a koleszterinen át a szénhidrátig (A Short Story from the Idea through Cholesterol to Carbohydrates, 2003). Golem pairs convey tender feelings about intimate love or parent-child relationships, for instance Összebújós (Huddling Together, 1990), Malkhut (1990), Két fej (Two Heads), A gólem naplója (The Golem’s Diary), Az agyag útja Gólemen át Gólemáig (The Way of the Clay from Golem to Golema, 1988). He animated several of his works by mobilizing them with the help of some built-in mechanics and so enabled his kinetic sculptures to show signs of life and dynamics. Most of these constructions ceased to function with time but they still carry their spirit and sculptural momentum, surviving even their creator.

For his 2002 exhibition entitled Szagos mozgó micsodák, tér és gondolat tákolmányok (Odorous, Moving Thingies, Patchworks of Space and Idea), organised in the Budapest Gallery, Thury created golems affecting all our senses, displaying

human instincts and acts and he also assigned various smells to them. He unified in this way naturality with aliveness while fitted everyday materials out with text fragments on lofty ideas and thoughts. The title of one of his works created for the “odorous exhibition” reminds of a novella by Ernő Szép, Emberszag (Human Smell), making reference to the Holocaust.

The human-sized golems, after having completed their mission, broke up and fell to pieces in the hand of their creator. It can be argued that Thury’s golem parts are made a meaningful whole thanks to the accompanying texts. Besides the huge heads, reminding of small children’s faces, often with wondering looks, hands and other body parts, it is torsos that dominate. It helped Levente Thury emphasize the unity and importance of a thinking mind and an acting hand, the importance of simultaneously focusing upwards and downwards. He added various textiles, found objects and coins to the sculpture fragments, underlining their realism.

Their clothing makes human-like creatures out of the golems and they grow and come to life in their fragmentation. The literary quotes and text fragments make them speaking and thinking creatures. As if the wise 20th-21th-century golem maker had written his texts on parchments and put them into the mouths of clay figurines to make them utter his views, often sarcastic, on the world. “It is about an object or a person that should be able to show that the emotional charge can be stronger than the limited dancing technique of an aged body gone to seed.” “I think and dread that the world always fails. It is then always the ants that build new worlds.” Hands and heads placed between frames, bars, clamps convey the feeling of being chained down, locked up, but the freedom of ideas born in the heads opposing all that leaves it behind and fills the spirited clay torsos with a new world of ideas.

Thury Leventéről Levi – így szólította barátainak széles köre – újító szobrász volt. Eredetileg keramikusként végzett a Főiskolán az 1960-as években, egy olyan korszakban, amikor a magyar iparművészek experimentális alkotói iskolát teremtettek a szilikát- és textiltervezésben. Akkor ez nem volt a leghálásabb pozíció. De ő még a csoportszabadság és a tűrt szerep keserveit is kevesellte, átlépte a műfajok és a technikák határait, hogy az alkotó gondolat szabad lehessen. Bár kiemeltnek egyáltalán nem tekinthető köztéri megbízásaiban inkább a tradíciókhoz alkalmazkodott, az innovatív elemek mentén félreérthetetlenül rá lehet ismerni, hogy az alkotó Thury Levente.

Nyílt titok volt, hogy tud egyszerre kereső és őrző is lenni. Rendkívüli kíváncsisággal nézett szét, akármerre járt az Ó- és az Újvilágban. Egyik felmenője a glóbusz-szerte szétkergetett túlélő családtagok nyughelyéről és szülőföldjéről – vice versa – hordta, összehozta a rokonság sírdombjainak szilikátporát. Levente hasonlóan babrált a közös tudásunkkal: a szellemi szférák hordalékaiban keresett és talált értékes rögöket. Baráti beszélgetésekben kételkedett a „lelet” hitelében, csiszolgatta, néha széttörte és újra összerakta a fogalmakat. Nem engedte, hogy az emlékezet tartalma kiüresedjen. A téma, a motívum hangsúlyosan megjelent műveiben.

A judaisztikai tudásra épített gyászmunkát leginkább a szobrászat teremtő lényegével sikerült megragadnia. Ezért évtizedeken át kitartott egy újabb kori Pygmalion változatnál, a gólem-szobrok készítésénél. Hozzátanult. A nyolcvanas, kilencvenes években a Chagall Kör – Ájin Csoport tanuló beszélgetéseinek témái a társadalom megújulásának katalizátorává válhattak. E bölcsességgel gondolkodott a kulturális programokról, a művészeti és kiállításkurátori teendőkről is. Nem tudni, honnan vette óriási energiakészletét, de keresztül tudott vinni bármi lehetetlent.

A kilencvenes évek végén a modern művészet szempontjából korábban periferikus Magyar Zsidó Múzeumból hamarosan az egyik legnépszerűbb, élő kiállítóhely lett, miután a múzeum falai között – barátságunk és tesz-vesz munkálkodásunk egyik csúcsaként – megrendeztük Thury Leventével a Diaszpóra (és) művészet című tárlatot. A kiállító kortárs művészek velünk együtt értették meg, hogy az egész hagyományos művészet – és köztük a manualitáshoz kötődő alkotók is – mára diaszpórában élnek. Levi bámulatosan kezelte ezt a fájdalmas felfedezést. Nemcsak a filozófia implicit humorát tudta élő beszéddé formálni, de a származása által két irányból rábízott „hozott anyagot” is: a kelet-magyarországi kisnemesi-paraszti bölcsességet, és a pestinek csúfolt zsidó metanyelvi közeget, ami alig van már jelen. Talán a kíváncsiságon túl azért is járt szerteszéjjel a nagyvilágban, hogy ennek utolsó morzsáit felcsipegesse, visszahozza – sokak örömére és ámulatára.

Igen, Thury Levente terapeuta is volt. Gyógyító művészetet csinált – nem tudom, ő maga tudta-e, vagy csak gyakorolta, de annyira sikeres volt, hogy még saját nagy baján is segíteni tudott. Amikor már a mozgásában is korlátozta a betegség, szobrai, gólemei kezdtek el mozogni. A „büdös” jelzőt Levente – mint a homeopátiás terápiában – a szoborfiguráiból áradó milligrammnyi illattal kompenzálta a tárlatlátogató felé. Az egyik aroma az Emberszag képaláírást viselte. A Thury-műcímek szarkazmusukkal tartották féken az energiáktól duzzadó plasztikákat. Alkotójuk a szó erejét is bevetve kontrollálni tudta a rút és a szép egyensúlyát. Gólemei mimikáját – kicsit persze a kerámiaégetés esetlegességének, repedéseinek, mázredőinek is hála – saját arcának belénk égett ön-rajzolatára tudta kigyúrni. Ezzel a technológiából merített humán szimbolika mögé rejtett kifejezéssel is emlékezni tudunk és fogunk rá: közönsége és barátai.

On Levente Thury Levi, as he was called by his many friends, was an innovative sculptor. Originally, he trained to become a ceramic artist at the College of Applied Arts in the 1960’s, a period when Hungarian applied artists founded a creative experimental movement in silicate and textile. At the time it was not the most rewarding position to be in. Still, he seemed to feel that the hardship associated with group liberty and being just about tolerated did not go far enough so he went on to cross borders of genres and techniques in order to free up creativity.

Even though he carried out his public space commissions mostly in keeping with traditions, his innovative elements unmistakeably revealed their creator as Levente Thury.

It was an open secret that he could simultaneously be a seeker and a keeper. He was looking around himself with extraordinary curiosity, wherever he went either in the Old or the New World. One of his ancestors had collected silicate dust from his kinship’s graves, from the resting place and the homeland (or vice versa) of surviving relatives dispelled around the globe. Levente would fiddle with our collective knowledge in a similar way: he sought and found valuable nuggets in the sediments of intellectual spheres. He discussed his “finds” with his friends questioning their credibility; he polished, sometimes shattered concepts and reassembled them anew. He never allowed memory become void of substance. Themes and motives emerged emphatically in his works.

The creative essence of sculpture helped him seize and express the mourning process, which he built on a knowledge of Judaism. Over decades, he kept making golem figurines, as a new age version of Pygmalion.

He trained himself in the field. The discussions at the Chagall Circle – Ájin Group in the eighties and nineties, aimed at self-education, turned around subjects that might actually have served as catalysts for a social renewal. This wisdom informed his thinking on cultural programmes as well as artistic or curatorial works. It is unclear where he drew his enormous reserve of energy from but he managed to carry through any impossible project.

At the end of the nineties, the Hungarian Jewish Museum, formerly a marginal spot in the modern art scene, became one of the most popular and lively exhibition places after Levente Thury and I organized there a show entitled Diaspora (and) Art, one of the pinnacles of our friendship and respective work. Contemporary exhibiting artists realized with us then and there that traditional art in its entirety, including manual artists, had come to live now in a diaspora. Levi processed this painful discovery amazingly. He was able to morph into live speech not only the implicit humour of philosophy but also the “received material” that, due to his origin, he was trusted with from two sides: the wisdom of lower nobles and peasants from Eastern-Hungary on the one side, and the Jewish metalinguistic medium, mocked as the vernacular of “Pest”, which hardly exists any more, on the other. Apart from curiosity, this might have been a reason for him to roam the world, namely to pick up and bring back its last crumbles, for the joy and amazement of many.

Yes: Levente Thury was also a therapist. The art he practiced was healing. I do not know whether he himself was aware of this or simply practiced it but he was so successful in it that he was even able to help himself during his own illness. When his infirmity curtailed his mobility, it was his figurines, his golems that started moving instead. Levente made his figurines “smelly” by adding just milligrams of some smell, in homeopathic dose, that emanated from the golems towards the viewers. One of the aromas bore the description Emberszag (Human Smell). Thury’s titles given to his works restrained by their sarcasm the figurines otherwise bursting with energy. Their creator was able to control the balance of ugly and beautiful by using even the power of words. He managed to knead his golems so that they evoked the contours his own face, the lines of which have been burned into us; a similarity of course partly due to the haphazardness, the cracks and the glaze folds produced by the firing process. We, his audience and friends, can and will remember him also for this expression of his, hidden behind a human symbol, taking its inspiration from technology.

1941. január 26-án született Budapesten. 1965-ben szerezte meg diplomáját a Magyar Iparművészeti Főiskola kerámia szakán. Mestere Csekovszky Árpád volt. Pályája kezdetén funkcionális kerámiákat, edényeket, dísztárgyakat, murális munkákat készített. A nyolcvanas évektől autonóm művészeti útra lépett, a gólem tematika foglalkoztatta. 1967–68-ban a Fiatal Képzőművészek Stúdiója, majd 1979-ben, 1982-ben és 1994-ben a Kecskeméti Kerámia Stúdió ösztöndíjasa volt. Tagja volt a Magyar Képző-és Iparművészek Szövetségének, a Művészeti Alapnak, a Magyar Alkotóművészek Országos Egyesületének, Magyar Szépmíves Társaságnak, illetve 1989–1995 között a Chagall Kör Ajin csoportjának. 1990-ben alkotói ösztöndíjjal Kaliforniában dolgozott. 2007-ben Budapesten hunyt el.

Levente Thury (1941–2007) sculptor, ceramist, golem maker Levente Thury was born in Budapest on 26 January 1941. He received his degree in1965 at the Faculty of Ceramics of the Hungarian College of Applied Arts. His master was Árpád Csekovszky. At the beginning of his career, he produced functional ceramics, bowls, ornamental objects and murals. From the eighties, he embarked on his own artistic path and became involved in his golem project. He received a scholarship from the Young Fine Artists’ Studio in 1967–68, then from the Kecskemét Ceramics Studio in 1979, 1982 and 1994.

He was a member of the Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists’ Association, the Art Fund, the Association of Hungarian Artists, The Hungarian Arts and Crafts Association (Magyar Szépmíves Társaság), and the Ajin Group of the Chagall Circle between 1989–1995. In 1990, he worked in California on an art fellowship. He died in 2007 in Budapest.
