The Mass Explained: Liturgy of the Word Part I
By Seminarian Arturo Vigueras When we gather at a friend’s house for a meal, we always begin with a conversation and telling stories about our lives. The same thing happens at Mass. After the gathering rites of the Mass, we all sit down and listen to the readings from the Word of God as they are proclaimed. The stories that we listen to at Mass are the stories about God and his people. This part of the Mass is called the Liturgy of the Word and for Sunday Masses this part consists of three readings: the first reading comes from the Old Testament, followed by a psalm that is sung by a cantor or choir, the Second Reading comes from the New Testament letters (usually St. Paul as he wrote most of the New Testament) and after the second reading, then follows the Gospel Acclamation as the priest or deacon prepare to read the Gospel reading. The priest or deacon is the mouthpiece of Jesus by his ordination. After the Reading of the Gospel, the priest or deacon will give a homily which explains how the readings just proclaimed apply to our lives. Now, that you have the general outline of all the components of the Liturgy of the Word and to help us gain a deeper understanding of each of these components, let us look at these components individually. The first reading comes from the Old Testament and it demonstrates the Church belief that all Scripture is the Word of God. Furthermore, the reading from the Old Testament shows us how God spoke to the chosen people and prepared the way for the coming of Jesus Christ. The psalm expresses the different feelings that are expressed in the old reading and it represents our response to God’s word and as we sing the psalm, we allow the word of God to penetrate our hearts. The Second reading shows us how Jesus Christ is the incarnation of the Word of God and how Jesus fulfilled all the promises and teachings of God from the Old Testament. Once the second reading is done, the choir usually sings the Gospel acclamation which is normally expressive of the Paschal joy, recalling the Life, Death, Resurrection and the Second Coming of Jesus. The song Alleluia, which accompanies the Gospel procession, comes from the Hebrew word that means “Praise God”. The whole assembly praises Christ who comes to proclaim the Good News of Salvation (Gospel). This joy is expressed as the assembly stands at the beginning of the Gospel Acclamation. Also by standing at the beginning of the Gospel acclamation, we stand to recognize that the Gospel is sacred, since it contains the words and deeds of Jesus Christ and this part of the liturgy is surrounded by many distinct acts of respect such as standing, using incense and sometimes two candles are used as the Priest processes the Gospel to the ambo. After the Gospel acclamation is over, the priest greets the assembly by saying “The Lord be with you” and the assembly responds, “And with your spirit” and then the priest says, “A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew/ Mark/Luke/John.” The assembly then responds, “Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ” as we say this response then we make a small Sign of the Cross on our forehead, mouth, and heart, this small gesture expresses our readiness to open our mind to the Word of God, to confess the Word of God with our mouth and to safeguard the Word of God in our hearts. The priest then reads the gospel and once he finishes reading the Gospel he says, “The Gospel of the Lord” to which all of us respond “Praise be to you, Lord Jesus Christ” this response expresses our gratitude and thanksgiving for having just received the grace to listen to the Word of God. Once the Gospel reading has concluded, then we all sit down and listen to the priest’s homily. Next week, I will explore the second half of the Liturgy of the Word which consists of the homily, the recitation of the Nicene Creed and the Prayer of the Faithful.

PARISH AND DEANERY HIGHLIGHTS GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE
There will be a Marshfield Deanery “Mother Son DEEPER UNDERSTANDING Date Night” on Saturday, April 21 from 5-7:30 pm OF SCRIPTURE March 18, 2018 5thand Sunday Lent in for Mother’s (or mother-figures) theirofsons "Now there were some Greeks among those who had come Dillenburg Hall at OLP. It will include dinner and to a worship at the feast. They came to Philip and asked him, 'Sir, we formal dance. Registration details coming. would like to see Jesus.'" It has begun. News of Jesus has spread beyond native-born, Aramaic-speaking Jews. We don't know if the Greeks mentioned here heard of Jesus from fellow travelers or if news of this intriguing rabbi had reached all the way to their home. What we do know is that this interaction spurred an interesting comment from Jesus: "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified." In other words, it has begun. The time has come for the message to move beyond the geographic bounds of Israel. But what does this message require? The Gospel is clear: "He said this indicating the kind of death he would die." A grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies to its life as only a seed. A caterpillar takes on the appearance of temporary death in order to transform into a butterfly. In the Gospels, sacrifice and death are a way of becoming something more than you were before. This Lent, new life can come from our sacrifices. When we enter into the season with Jesus, our difficulties can transform our perspective. "Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." As we abstain from meat and fast from eating between meals, we can grow in compassion for the hungry. We can give alms of our time, sacrificially spending time with the lonely, the sick, and the marginalized. Our little Lenten "deaths" -- death to unnecessary preferences, death to selfish living, death to ignorance of other's pain -- can bring new life to the world long after the season is over. This is the invitation this Sunday and every Lenten season, to begin anew from death to life.
