PARISH NEWS The Mass Explained:
GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday
Liturgy of the Word Part II By Seminarian Arturo Vigueras In the last article, I talked about the readings of the Mass. After listening to the Word of God (the Gospel), the priest comes in front of the altar (sometimes he will deliver his homily from the ambo) and begins his homily. The Homily is an exhortation to all of us on how we are to live what we believe. In other words, the Homily takes the Word of God and brings it to our life situation today. Just as a large piece of bread is broken to feed many individual persons, so the Word of God must be broken open so it can be received and digested by the people. After being fed by the Word of God, the priest then returns to his chair and sits. After a short moment of silence, the priest and the congregation stand together and recite the Creed. The NiceneConstantinopolitan Creed, composed around the year 381 A.D., gives a concise summary of all the things which we believe. The Creed is a statement of our faith in the world and it is a recommitment of our lives to God after having heard the Word of God in the scriptures and the homily. The Profession of Faith leads us to give our life for another just as Christ gave his life for us. At the conclusion of the recitation of the Creed, the priest then invites the people to gather all of our prayers and petitions to God. This last part of the Liturgy of a Word is called the Prayers of the Faithful. The Prayers of the Faithful are like the connecting hinges between the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist (the next part of the Mass). The Prayers of the Faithful are generally the same and follow the same format for every Mass. The priest begins the Prayer of the Faithful with a short introduction and then the lector or deacon would read five to seven petitions. The Prayers of the Faithful truly belong to the people who are beloved children of God, who to turn to God our loving father for guidance and help. The Prayers of the Faithful usually are in the following format:
Our humanity bleeds through today's Gospel passages in more ways than one. We see both elation and fall, hope in the midst of the darker sides of our natures. If we allow it, these Gospels hold a mirror to our own fickle hearts. The crowds cry "Hosanna" and the Apostles profess allegiance unto death. In a manner of days -- even hours -- Jesus is betrayed, abandoned, denied, condemned, tortured, and executed. As God, he could have stopped this horrific narrative from unfolding, but he doesn't. He allows free will to play itself out. There are nearly two millennia between this spectacle and us. We can stand safely removed, if we choose. But Lent invites us to return to this story. Lent invites us to find ourselves in the people we encounter there. Are we the repentant woman at Bethany? Are we naysayers of such lavish piety? Have we acted in a way that betrays those we love or denies what we know to be good and true? Have we fallen asleep in our faith? Have we unfairly accused others of a crime or immorality we imagine, though perhaps they didn't commit? Do we help others carry their burdens? Do we stand in solidarity with those who suffer? Do we care for the dying? This week, take up today's Gospel again. Look carefully at the Passion narrative and sit with it in silence. Find yourself in the story and ponder its meaning for your own life. Journey with Jesus to the foot of the Cross so that you too may say, along with the faithful centurion, "truly this man was the Son of God!"
FIRST FRIDAY AND FIRST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH We need adorers in church on April 6 & 7 for: First Friday Adoration from 8 am—noon and for First Saturday Adoration from 9 am-noon. Please contact the Parish Office at 715-384-9414, sign up at the Welcome Desk or email olpsem@olpmarshfield.com
ADVERTISER OF THE WEEK
For the needs of the church For public authorities and salvation of the world For those burdened with any kind of burden or difficulty For local community At the end of each petition, there is a short moment of silence with the phrase “We Pray to the Lord” to which the people respond, “Lord, hear our prayer.” After the lector or deacon finish reading the petitions, the priest concludes the Prayer of the Faithful by offering all of our prayers to God. At this point, the Liturgy of the Word is finished and the priest sits downs along with the people as the choir beings the offertory song and the ushers prepare to take up the collection.
