The love relationship that exists among the Persons of the Holy Trinity is both intense and intimate. As beautiful as this teaching is, it demonstrates how human language really pales in trying to capture the essence of God. The Father brings us to the creative, powerful, yet gently meticulous part of God who has brought mountains and hills into being, as well as each of his children. Still the Father is more than this. The Son demonstrates the unconditional love of God filled with endless mercy and compassion. This love really understands the journey of the marginalized and the poor and has no use for created powers and structures that alienate and hurt people. But the Son is even more than this. The Holy Spirit is the breath of God who teaches wisdom and brings understanding, who governs the seasons and discerns the thoughts of human hearts. Yet the Holy Spirit is still more than this. We worship a God who is beyond and also intimately bonded to all that he has made, without whom nothing could be sustained in being. Praise the Holy Trinity!

PARISH NEWS The Holy Trinity by Seminarian Arturo Last week, we celebrated the descent of the Holy Spirit, and this week we celebrate one of the main reason why God the Father sent the Holy Spirit into the world, that is to reveal to the world the entire essence of who God is to the world-Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The words that we heard in the first reading should be familiar to us. It is from Saint Paul’s Letter that we get the words the priest uses at the beginning of Mass in invoking the Holy Trinity in a beautiful way, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. The priest offers it to us and we proclaim it back to him with the response “and with your Spirit.” However, this is not the first time that we have invoked the Trinity at this Mass. As you entered the church and dipped your finger into the holy water fonts at the entrances of the church, you bless yourself with the Sign of the Cross and some of us do this automatically without thinking about it. The Sign of the Cross is not just a gesture that we use to start our prayer, it is not a just a sign that Catholics use. It is a re-statement and remembrance of our baptism with makes us beloved children of God. We invoke the three persons of the Holy Trinity to make us members of the Body of Christ; and every time we enter the church or begin our personal prayer time, we brand ourselves with God in three persons and whatever we do or say after is in the name of the Father…and of the Son…and of the Holy Spirit. With the simple gesture of touching our heads for the Father-the one who created us, we recall where our existence began, in the mind of God, the Creator of our beautiful world. That finger on our forehead is a reminder of God who is totally in love with us. That he sent His son to draw us back into His Presence. This is the same Father we speak of as “our Father who art in Heaven. We touch our hearts for the Son-the one whose unceasing love took him to the cross, and the one who taught us how to love through his Sacred Heart. He gave his ultimate agonizing proof of his love for us on the Cross. We touch our shoulders for the Holy Spirit-the one who gives us strength, on whose shoulders we are carried, and who enables us to God’s arms, working on earth. With the Holy Spirit around us, no one is ever alone. God through the Holy Spirit is always with us and then it is the Holy Spirit that strengthens our life so that we can better shoulder the many burdens and responsibilities that we encounter in our daily lives. Saint Augustine explains the Holy Trinity by saying that “the Father is the Lover. The Son is the Loved one. And the Holy Spirit is the Love they send forth.” You see God wants us to find Him. God is not a lonely being, but rather, he is a relationship of persons -Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. At the heart of the mystery of the Holy Trinity is that God dwells within each one of us. God is not just out there somewhere. God is alive within us and in the spiritual life that makes a human a beloved child of God. Jesus promised that He would never leave us alone, and we are not alone. He is with us always not just outside of us but within us. So when we come to the end of the Sign of the Cross with the “Amen”, which means “so be it”, it is an expression of ascent, in itself an act of faith in that we believe as beloved children of God. We renew our faith every time that we make the Sign of the Cross.

MASS ATTIRE: It’s that time of the year when people ask me to address immodesty at Mass. This is a sensitive topic because people’s tastes are all over the board. One easy question is to ask yourself when dressing for Mass, “Who am I dressing up for? For God or for other people?” Any time we dress to draw people’s attention to ourselves, we’re giving our relentless ego a green light. If we love God, we’ll do our best for Him, including dressing nicely for the times we worship Him. If we love ourselves inordinately, we’ll dress in ways that make us the center of attention. So, when you come to Mass this summer, ask yourself, “Is what I am wearing leading people to God or to me?”

MAY 27, 2018 ● THE MOST HOLY TRINITY SUNDAY
"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends." Christians are no strangers to sacrifice. Jesus lays down his life for our redemption, martyrs remain faithful to the end, and every believer faces "deaths" in the spiritual life when love requires a re-ordering of preference and priority. On Memorial Day, we honor those who laid down their lives for their nation and for the values we espouse - freedom, justice, and a better world for our children. In a day that often fills with barbeques and boat launches, remember to take some time in prayer! Intercede for those who have died and for the loved ones they left behind, and pray for peace on earth. 5
