FROM THE PASTOR I've been in touch recently with some of my high school classmates from Holy Name Seminary in Madison. They are putting together a 30th class reunion, and I hope to join them in August. Of course with reunions comes reminiscing. I don't have many happy stories from my freshman year, because I wasn't a happy kid. We would stay at the seminary from Sunday night until Friday afternoon, and the weekends went by far too quickly. I felt out of place, and I was terribly homesick. The hardest part of the week was getting into the car on Sunday afternoon for the hour-long drive back to Madison. I remember two details of my freshman year, both involving the rosary. I had begun the habit of praying a lot, especially late at night while everyone else was sleeping. I remember joining the small group of students who prayed the rosary at 10:00 each night. Sister Veronica, the English teacher, led it. After the rosary concluded one evening and everyone went to bed, I stayed behind in the dark chapel and poured out my misery to God. Four months later, I stayed behind again, this time to thank God for the happiness that I now had. That joy stayed with me for the rest of my high school years, because Jesus loves us and provides for us. Nothing had really changed in my circumstances, I just felt God’s generosity making me happy. On my heart these days are all our parishioners in that “first rosary,” at a very difficult time in life. Holding on to our faith, daily renewing our trust in Jesus no matter what the circumstances, the Lord will bring us to that “second rosary” eventually. God bless you all. –Fr. Berns

WELCOME TO OUR LADY OF PEACE PARISH
PARISH NEWS Honoring Our Heavenly Mother During the Month of May By Seminarian Arturo Vigueras May is the month when all of us start to see new life all around us. All of nature begins to bloom and every day we start seeing how fast the leaves on the trees grow, or how fast the tulips that have been buried under the snow and have withstood the harsh winter, begin to grow rapidly and bloom. As all this is happening, the church, for centuries, has set aside the entire month of May to honor Mary the Mother of God.
Mary, like the spring season, reminds us of the idea of promise and hope of new life that would come directly from the birth of Jesus Christ. Another reason why we celebrate Mary during the month of May is that May normally is part of the Easter season, which is the period of fifty days between Easter to Pentecost. It is during this time the church celebrates the resurrection of Christ, concluding with Jesus’ ascension to heaven and the sending of the Holy Spirit to the Church on Pentecost. It is appropriate to dedicate the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to help us recall her intense joy over her Son’s resurrection and the comfort and guidance that she gave to the apostles as they were trying to understand the consequences of the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ.
The event involved 1,320 volunteers provided by 23 churches. We packed 272,900 meals which is enough food to feed 747 otherwise hungry children every day for a year. Please take a moment to thank God for that blessing!! Also, to date we’ve raised close to $50,000. In the next couple weeks we’ll owe $59,875 to pay for the food so we’re not quite done yet. Be sure to thank all who donated and encourage anyone left with a heart to give to make a donation. Donations can still be made at www.marshfieldfmsc.com or by mailing a check referencing our event code #1804-046EA (Marshfield Mobile Pack) to Feed My Starving Children 401 93rd Ave NW, Coon Rapids, MN 55433.
MAY 6, 2018 ● SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
As we begin the month of May, it is important to recall the immense joy that Mary experienced over her Son’s resurrection and to rediscover her role as mother and teacher in our lives. During this month dedicated to our Blessed Mother, may we all strive to foster the ten principal virtues that She embodies and may all of us strive to imitate our Blessed Mother in order for us to be on the path to holiness. These are the ten principal virtues of Mary:
