The President’s Message FEBRUARY 2024 MESSAGE Greetings Mu Lambda Chapter Members,

As we step into the month of February, I extend warm greetings to every one of you. I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. January tested us with its unpredictable weather, from biting cold to unexpected warmth, and a generous dose of rain and snow. Yet, through these fluctuations, the Mu Lambda Chapter has stood resilient, leaving an indelible mark on our community. In celebrating the birthday of our revered Brother and Reverend, Dr. Martin L. King Jr., our chapter took part in three impactful events in Washington D.C. Among these, the unified march with the five other Alpha Phi Alpha chapters was a highlight. The snow couldn’t deter us as we led the way with pride. Moreover, our commitment to community service shone through as the Mu Lambda brothers actively engaged with two local schools, contributing to a meaningful day of service during the holiday. As we embrace Black History Month, I want to commend each one of you for the dedication and impact you’ve brought to our centennial year. Let us carry this momentum forward into February, participating wholeheartedly in the array of activities planned by our brothers at the chapter, district, and region levels. From the upcoming Mental Health and Wellness virtual program to our future Voteless People is a Hopeless People, voter registration, and education initiatives, there are numerous opportunities for us to make a difference. Remember, we are our Brother’s Keeper. Extend a warm welcome to new members entering our space and reconnect with those you haven’t seen in a while. Reach out through texts, calls, or visits, fostering the strength of our brotherhood and leadership. I am proud to serve as your president and look forward to continuing this journey alongside every one of you. Let us make Black History Month 2024 a time of unity, growth, and impactful service. Together, we stand strong, inspired by the legacy of those who came before us. Happy Black History Month, Mu Lambda Chapter! Fraternally,

Brother Mikael E. LaRoche, President (10-Mu Lambda-13) 2023 - 2024 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Vice President’s Message FEBRUARY 2024 MESSAGE

Greetings and a joyous Black History Month to all! Time does indeed fly, and here we find ourselves midway through the 2023-2024 Centennial fraternal year. As we immerse ourselves in the celebrations of Black History Month, it is essential to not only pay homage to the remarkable heroes and advancements within the African-American community but also to recognize the integral role our Dear Fraternity, and Mu Lambda Chapter play in the rich tapestry of our nation’s history, particularly in Washington, DC. The winter months have been bustling with activity, and as we continue our journey through this Centennial year, let us maintain the momentum we’ve built thus far. A special commendation goes out to Brother Marcus Spells for orchestrating the upcoming Black Men’s Stress and Mental Health Zoom Talk (February 28th). Mental health is a crucial facet of our well-being, and discussions like these contribute significantly to fostering awareness and support. Furthermore, I extend my appreciation to Brothers Noah Harris and Jeffery Taylor for their dedicated efforts in organizing the upcoming Voteless People Is A Hopeless People program, Safeguarding Our Democracy: A Conversation with Attorney Eric Holder (March 12th). BLACK HISTORY MONTH ALPHA PHI ALPHA

early 1900s became a catalyst for a wildfire of Black excellence.

LEADING THE WAY

The pivotal moment occurred on December 20th, 1907, with the chartering of the Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated on Howard University’s grounds by 22 young men. This momentous occasion marked the beginning of a movement that would not only shape the trajectory of Black collegiate life but also foster a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood that transcends generations.

In the annals of Black history, the narrative is woven with resilience, determination, and the collective efforts of individuals and organizations striving for progress and upliftment. A significant chapter in this rich tapestry unfolds on the historic campus of neighboring Howard University, where the founding of fraternities and sororities during the

The flame of Black excellence ignited by Alpha Phi Alpha soon sparked the founding of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Each of these organizations became an integral part of the Black experience, contributing not only

to the camaraderie among students but also playing a crucial role in the broader context of African American history. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, the first African American sorority, was founded on January 15th, 1908, just one year after the establishment of Alpha Phi Alpha. A testament to the enduring spirit of sisterhood, Alpha Kappa Alpha has consistently championed social issues, educational initiatives, and community service. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., established in 1911, has been a bastion of scholarship, upliftment, and brotherhood. With a focus on community service and mentorship, Omega Psi Phi has made enduring contributions to the betterment of society. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, founded on January 13th, 1913, emerged as a force for social change. Its commitment to justice and equality has been demonstrated through advocacy, public service, and impactful community programs. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., founded on January 9, 1914, has been a steadfast advocate for education and civic engagement. The fraternity has produced leaders who have left an indelible mark on various fields, embodying the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service.

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., founded on January 16th, 1920, has distinguished itself through its commitment to scholarship, sisterhood, and community service. Its members have been at the forefront of social change, contributing to the advancement of the African American community. The illustrious Howard University counts among its alumni a plethora of distinguished individuals who have emerged from these fraternities and sororities. Names like Brother Thurgood Marshall, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha, and past member of Mu Lambda Chapter; Toni Morrison, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha; and Vernon Jordan, a member of Omega Psi Phi, are just a few examples of the influential figures who have shaped the course of history. The importance of fraternities and sororities in the writing of Black history cannot be overstated. Beyond the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, these organizations have been pillars of support, education, and activism, leaving an enduring legacy that extends far beyond the hallowed halls of Howard University. As we reflect on our roots in Black history, we recognize the profound impact of these organizations in fostering unity, resilience, and a commitment to excellence for generations to come. Bro. MLK DAY

PARADE 2024 In a remarkable display of unity and resilience, the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. from the Mu Lambda, Beta, Omicron Omicron, and Nu Beta Chapters, along with alumni chapters Omicron Lambda Alpha and Omicron Eta Lambda, took to the streets of Washington D.C. on January 15th for the 19th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk and Parade. Braving one of the coldest days of the year, the Alpha men marched shoulder to shoulder, carrying the Mu Lambda banner proudly. The presence of undergraduate brothers from Beta Chapter at Howard University, Omicron Omicron Chapter at the University of the District of Columbia, and Nu Beta Chapter (American University, Georgetown University, Catholic University) added a dynamic energy to the procession. As they marched in unison, the collective spirit of Alpha Phi Alpha shone brightly, making a significant impact during the annual parade that honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As the procession made its way through the streets of Washington D.C., the brotherhood of Alpha Phi Alpha stood out, not just for their commitment to unity but also for the warmth they brought to the frigid morning. The brothers, bundled up against the cold, carried not only the Mu Lambda banner but also a legacy of leadership, service, and social justice. Adding to the powerful display, members of

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated followed closely behind, reinforcing the commitment to collaboration and shared values between the two organizations. The significance of this march extended beyond the visible presence of Alpha Phi Alpha. The three graduate chapter presidents, leading the way into Anacostia in South East DC, were accompanied by the guiding presence of Brother Michael Taylor, Area Director, and Associate Area Director Brother Samuel Armstrong. Scores of neighborhood onlookers lined the streets, offering waves of encouragement and gratitude as the Alpha brothers passed by. The snow-filled morning did little to dampen the spirits of both the marchers and the spectators, as the warmth of brotherhood and unity prevailed. A special highlight of the parade was the captivating performance by three members of Beta Chapter at the culmination of the procession. Their energetic showcase not only entertained the crowd but also underscored the commitment of Alpha Phi Alpha to excellence in all endeavors. The 19th Annual MLK March showcased not just the endurance of Alpha Phi Alpha in the face of adversity but also their unwavering commitment to the principles of brotherhood, leadership, and service – values deeply rooted in the legacy of our late Brother, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bro. FACING YOUR FEARS Confidence is your greatest ally in overcoming challenges. Consider this perspective: when you embrace opportunities instead of succumbing to fear, you immediately gain a 50% chance of success. It’s akin to having only $100 to your name and needing shelter; rather than letting fear make you homeless, you’d find a job or borrow money to secure a roof over your head. Fear, often the precursor to failure and lifelong struggles, doesn’t have to dictate your life’s course. Do not let it rob you of valuable experiences. For instance, if the fear of being fired by your boss plagues your thoughts, face it head-on. Instead of

enduring months of agonizing uncertainty, approach your boss and inquire. The courage to confront fear can earn you respect and alleviate unnecessary worries. Is fear hindering your progress or preventing honest communication? It’s essential to express your true feelings with tact, eliminating fear and fostering genuine connections. Complaints, often rooted in fear, only serve to drain your emotional energy. Break free from this cycle by focusing on solutions rather than dwelling on the problem. Ultimately, facing fear directly is the most effective strategy. Whether it's addressing workplace concerns or expressing your true feelings, the courage to confront fear can lead to personal growth, improved relationships, and pave the way for a more fulfilling life. This year our convention theme is “Everywhere We Go, We Tell Our Story: Advancing Alpha’s Footprint” and builds specifically on our 90th and 91st Anniversary themes “Writing Alpha’s Next Chapter” and “The True Spirit of Fraternity”, respectively. Alpha’s story is still being written, but unfortunately, some people think that we are an organization for the 20th century. It is incumbent upon us to let people know the work of Alpha has never stopped, as it is abundantly clear that the fight for advocacy, equity, and social justice is needed now more than ever. To S.E.R.V.E. with purpose, we must

MU LAMBDA’S MEN OF DISTINCTION Mu Lambda Brother A.J. Jones words of reflection... As I reflect on the 41st anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday being a federal holiday, I am reminded of the numerous public and private aspects of life that I am able to participate in because of his many sacrifices. It is here that I wish to acknowledge and uplift the fraternal aspect of my life which I share with him and all of the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. worldwide. For Dr. King Jr. showed me what it means to be a Castle of Dreams, Ambitious,

Successful, Hopeful Dreams. He illuminated for me how to be a Poetic Palace where human feeling is rhymed to celestial motives. He reminded me what it means to be a treasury of Good Fellowship and a College of Friendship. He continues to be my example of what it means to be the University of Brotherly Love and the School for the Better Making of Men. As such, I will continue to process all my decisions through the lens of his following quote…”Cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.” Towards this end, I want to wish all of the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity MU LAMBDA TORCH 2024

WRINGING THE BELL Sometimes, Black History is so close we don’t realize it’s presence… As we celebrate Black History Month each year, we generally focus our praise on luminaries that have had a significant influence on the United States or have had an impact on global issues. I would like to focus on another luminary within our own midst right here in Washington, DC, our own Brother Ryle Bell During each Mu Lambda Monthly Chapter meeting Brother Ryle Bell leads the Brothers in a Spirit Session that ranges from poetry, fraternity history facts, thought provoking dialog or simply a joke or two. To many of us, this is the only insight we have of this dynamic Brother. I would like to give a very brief portrayal that will further illuminate the accomplishments of one of our own. Brother Bell, an unassuming man, has had a significant influence on the Mu Lambda chapter of our beloved Fraternity, Area VI and the Eastern Region. Brother Bell was made in the Omicron Lambda Alpha chapter (key 500) in 1977 and within a very short time became involved with the business of the Fraternity. He was one of the charter members of Omicron Eta Lambda Chapter (key 618) seated in Washington, D.C. and was a former Area Director for Area VI. Brother Bell, a learned man and Dentist by profession, earned a DDS degree from Howard University and served as the Associate Dean for Academic and Undergraduate Affairs at Howard University. He also served many years as a

professor in the school of dentistry and is given the utmost respect by his many former students. Brother Bell currently serves as the Eastern Regional Director of Ritual, continuing his exemplary service to Alpha Phi Alpha. This assignment came about due his deep interest in correcting some misconceptions about how our candidates were being brought into the fraternity. Brother Bell made it a point to deepen his study in this subject and became an authority on The Ritual. He is sought by many Brothers to teach the Ritual across the Fraternity and travels to many Districts to give lectures. To expand the numbers of Brothers who wish to be taught the proper workings of the Fraternity, he has started a weekly zoom lecture where he prepares the next generation of Alphas to become teachers of the Ritual also. Brother Bell is a teacher, mentor, confidant, and a fount of knowledge to many, many Brothers across Alpha Phi Alpha. His is an enthusiast of Jazz, a composer of poetry and a connoisseur of fine spirts. Most importantly, I consider him a friend. Respectfully Submitted, Brother James Heck, Mu Lambda, Spring 1994 “Wring the bell”. “If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.” Margaret Fuller What a fitting quote to reference when talking about Brother Ryle Bell. If you, are a Brother, have not had an opportunity to be in the presence of Brother Bell you are missing out. Brother Bell is constantly sharing his knowledge whether it’s Alpha, the ritual, chapter dynamics, life, or scotch. The epitome of an Alpha Man” - from Bro: Samuel Armstrong Associate Area Director - Area VI

FOUNDATION A MU LAMBDA

STORY BY BRO. LOWERY

A Storied Tale of History and Legacy I am LeRoy Lowery and I am privileged to serve as the president of the Mu Lambda Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Mu Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. I have been asked to speak, briefly, on the role of Alpha in my life and the importance of Mu Lambda. As a child I spent summers with my grandparents in Huntsville, AL, thenpopulation 10,000. As my activities were limited, I spent much of my time reading books from a library located in the same block. One of the novels described a conference on a college campus featuring breakout sessions in various classrooms. In one room there were persons able to send and receive messages via mental telepathy. One student was strangely drawn to this classroom though he hadn’t planned to go and there was no sign at the entrance. He was directed by unseen signals sent out telepathically by those inside to all who could receive them. The student wandered into the room quizzingly and was welcomed by persons assembled within who shook his hand, exchanged warm greetings and later departed friends. As a student on Howard University’s campus, I was drawn to the Rankin Chapel fountain (not the “Q” dial or a red and white

tree), usually on Fridays, where I recognized many other students and was introduced to others. I didn’t plan to be there but was glad I went and felt welcome. I then proceeded to investigate this phenomenon called Alpha Phi Alpha and realized it was meant for me. Like the student in the novel, I, too, was powerfully moved by this unknown (telepathic ?) force that remains to this day - like so many of you in this room. Because I felt this force and embraced it so willingly, I was glad to add my energies to the efforts of Alphas. These efforts improve the life of my fellow man by offering programs designed to encourage people to register and vote; assist students through mentorship to graduate high school, attend college and realize their potential; advise young men how to avoid the trap of teenage pregnancy, etc. Through an administrative misstep, I was unable to complete my journey into Alphadom as an undergraduate and thought I had missed my opportunity. It was 20 years later that I resumed my journey after meeting men in Mu LambdaChapter. Mu Lambda is the 11 th graduate chapter in Alpha Phi Alpha, chartered in Washington on October 1, 1923. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of alumni Brothers to give aid to undergraduate Brothers and to continue the work of Alpha. The chapter’s 24 charter members included two of the Fraternity’s founders – called Jewels – Nathaniel Allison Murray and Robert Harold Ogle. Shortly thereafter they were joined by a third founder, Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Six of Alpha’s presidents have been a member of Mu Lambda – Jewel Callis and Brothers Howard H. Long, Charles H. Wesley, Rayford W. Logan, Belford V. Lawson and Henry Ponder. Other notable members include Brothers Joseph H. B. Evans (General Secretary); Louis Buck (Treasurer); Walter Booker, J. Rupert Picott and LeRoy Lowery (Eastern Region Vice Presidents); and Sylvester L. Shannon (General Chaplain). MU LAMBDA TORCH 2024

I sought to join Mu Lambda in large part because its members, many with a Howard connection, have distinguished themselves in their fields of endeavor including – Charles Hamilton Houston (law and civil rights); William L. Hansberry (African history); E. Franklin Frazier (Sociology, Bison); Herman R. Branson (Physics, Bison); Thurgood Marshall (Supreme Court Justice, Bison); Lewis K. Downing (Engineering Dean, Bison); Aubrey E. Robinson (DC Judge); James E. Cheek (HU President); Bishop J. Clinton Hoggard (Religion); Horace G. Dawson (Ambassador to Botswana); R. O’Hara Lanier (Ambassador to Liberia); Marion Barry (DC Mayor); and Vincent B. Orange, Sr. (former DC councilmember), among others. It is worth noting that many current members are blazing new trails, including Aranthan “AJ” Jones, II (Starbucks Executive VP and chief communications officer); Malcolm Carter (entrepreneur, owner of 9 Dominos’ pizza franchises in PG County); James Harmon (Architect, DC); Juan H. Powell (engineer and property developer); Michael Collins (past chief of staff for Congressman John Lewis, VP Harris’ staff); Silas Woods (VP Harris’ staff); Brian E. Ingram (financial expert); and Sean Plater (General Manager of Howard radio (WHUR) and television (WHUT), to name a few.

In 2020, we were selected by the Washington Award Program for its Best of Washington Award in the Philanthropy Category. You can donate to the work of the Mu Lambda Foundation through the Combined Federal Campaign and the DC One Fund. Mu Lambda Chapter members have served prominently as trailblazers in their respective fields and continue as trendsetters today. Our legacy is secure, but the best is yet to come! Our theme is - “Making a positive difference in DC since 1923!” Thank you for your on going support. Written By: Bro: LeRoy Lowery III President, Mu Lambda Foundation

Today, the Mu Lambda Foundation continues the implementation of traditional programs that have worked well in the past as well as newer approaches to improving the lives and well being of citizens throughout the DMV. We have instituted efforts that include college brothers from Beta Chapter at Howard University, combining youthful energy with experience. CHECK YOURSELF BEFORE YOU WRECK YOURSELF

Veterans Prostate Cancer Awareness (VPCA) published a men’s health checklist which gives suggestions for what health checks men should get based on their age range. The checklist is included below for your reference. Brothers are encouraged to consult with your primary care physician about each of these suggested checkups and screenings, or others that your physician may advise. And if you don’t have a primary care physician, you are encouraged to seek one out as soon as possible. Your health insurance provider likely produces a list of in-network primary care physicians from which you can choose. You may want to consider researching each of the physicians in your network to identify the one that best meets your needs and interests.

VOTELESS HOPELESS

Beta Chapter Spotlight on Alpha Phi Alpha’s National Service Program: A Voteless People is a Hopeless People The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Beta Chapter, commemorated the 60th anniversary of The Great March on Washington in a poignant tribute to history and the enduring legacy of civil rights. Honoring the iconic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech by Bro. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Fraternity members, echoing their predecessors, undertook a symbolic march retracing the path of the historic event that reshaped the nation’s conscience. Against the tumultuous backdrop of the early 1960s, marked by relentless assaults on peaceful demonstrators advocating for racial justice, a clarion call for a grand gesture emerged. On August 28, 1963, a quarter-million individuals converged in the heart of Washington, D.C., for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Their unified voice demanded an end to segregation, fair wages, voting rights, education equity, and long-overdue civil rights protections. Significantly, Brother Martin Luther King Jr., an esteemed member

of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. (Sigma, 1952), ascended the podium as the closing speaker. His resounding oration, etched into the core of American history, resounded with themes of freedom, equality, justice, and love. Six decades on, the resonating echoes of Brother Martin Luther King Jr.’s message reverberate powerfully in the present day. To pay homage to this momentous occasion, the Brothers of the Beta Chapter, in conjunction with neighboring chapters, embarked on a solemn march along the same hallowed grounds their forebearers trod. Clad in Alpha Attire, they not only mirrored the attire worn by the great leaders of that transformative August day but also exemplified the fraternity’s commitment to upholding the ideals of civil justice—a responsibility ingrained in the fraternity’s history. Their participation stands not merely as a tribute to the past but as a beacon guiding their commitment to societal progress. By retracing history’s footsteps and adorning the mantle of leadership in the ongoing fight for civil rights, the Beta Chapter exemplified the enduring ethos of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., contributing to a legacy rooted in advocacy, societal change, and love for all mankind. FEDERAL DONATIONS TO MU LAMBDA Brothers, it is that time of year when we begin to think in the spirit of giving and giving thanks. In that spirit, the Mu Lambda Foundation participates in two key funding programs through which federal and District of Columbia employees can share the gift of the giving. The Combined Federal Campaign - CFC (https://www.opm.gov/combined-federal-campaign) is a resource that allows U.S. government employees to make regular payroll deductions in support of the Mu Lambda Foundation and its charitable and community service programs. The DC One Fund (https://os.dc.gov/page/dc-one-fund-each-one-give-one) provides an opportunity for employees of the District of Columbia to do the same. All donations through these funds are tax deductible and deducted from your paycheck regularly. What could be an easier or better way to support the programs you care about? As open season begins for 2023, you may plan your weekly, biweekly, or monthly contributions to the Mu Lambda Foundation by contributing to charity number 66770 in the CFC, and number 9556 in the DC One Fund. Let’s make 2023 the best year yet for supporting youth and abused women in the DC area. Thank you for your continued support. Bro. Kent Benjamin

HEALTH CORNER By Bro. Marcus Spells

AMERICAN HEART MONTH Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The prevalence of high blood pressure among Black people in the United States is among the highest in the world. About 55% of Black adults have hypertension: Genetic factors: African Americans also seem to be more sensitive to salt, which increases the risk of having high blood pressure. Environmental factors: Some scientists believe that high blood pressure in Black people is due to things unique to the experience of African Americans. Black people worldwide have rates of high blood pressure that are similar to that of white people. But in the U.S., the difference is dramatic: 41% of African Americans have high blood pressure, as compared to 27% of white Americans. In addition, Black people in the U.S are more likely to be overweight than Black people in other countries. Some experts think that social and economic factors – including discrimination and economic inequality – are responsible for this difference. Other factors: • Increased age • Excessive weight • Family history of high blood pressure • Having diabetes • Inactivity • Lots of salt in your diet • Not getting enough potassium • Smoking

LEMON GARLIC BUTTER CHICKEN AND GREEN BEANS SKILLET Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •

3 – 6 skinless, boneless chicken thighs 1 pound (450g) green beans, trimmed 3 tablespoons butter, divided or (ghee for paleo diet) 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon salt and fresh cracked black pepper Juice of 1/2 lemon + lemon slices, for garnish 1/2 cup (125ml) chicken stock 1 tablespoon hot sauce (we used Sriracha) 1/4 teaspoon crushed red chili pepper flakes, optional 1/2 cup fresh chopped parsley

Instructions 1. To make the lemon garlic butter chicken thighs recipe with green beans: In a small bowl, combine onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Season chicken thighs generously with the spice mixture. Set aside while you prepare green beans. 2. Arrange green beans in a microwave-safe dish with 1/2 cup (125ml) water. Cook in the microwave for 8-10 minutes, until almost done but still crisp. 3. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over mediumlow heat. Lay the seasoned chicken thighs in one layer in the skillet. Cook for 5-6 minutes then flip and cook another 5-6 minutes, until cooked through and a cooking thermometer displays 165°F (75°C). If chicken browns too quickly, lower the heat. Adjust timing depending on the thickness. Transfer chicken to a plate and set aside. 4. In the same skillet, lower the heat and melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Add chopped parsley, garlic, hot sauce, red crushed chili pepper flakes, and pre-cooked green beans and cook for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring regularly, until cooked to your liking. Add lemon juice and chicken stock and reduce the sauce for a couple of minutes, until slightly thickened. 5. Push green beans to the side and add cooked chicken thighs back to the pan and reheat quickly. Adjust seasoning with pepper and serve the lemon garlic butter chicken thighs immediately, garnished with more crushed chili pepper, fresh parsley, and a slice of lemon if you like. Enjoy! Message from the Editor As we joyously observe Black History Month, also recognized as AfricanAmerican History Month, let’s celebrate the remarkable achievements and significant milestones we have accomplished. As we cherish our successes, it’s essential to consider the resilience and strength demonstrated by our ancestors in the face of challenges since their arrival on these shores. In the spirit of reflection, let’s honor the struggles and triumphs of the Jewels who laid the foundation for the cherished fraternity we hold dear. Their journey serves as a powerful reminder of the potential for unity and positive influence within our community. Inspired by the words of Henry Ford, who emphasized the strength of collective progress, let us forge ahead in the footsteps of our Jewels and founding members. By moving forward together, we can continue to make a lasting impact on our community, embodying the spirit of unity and success that defines our legacy. BRO. Alpha is a life long commitment An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
