MU LAMBDA CHAPTER
The President’s Message Brothers, When we watch the news – 90 percent of the conversation is the COVID-19 but it still seems distant until it touches someone you know. I lost a friend of 41 years. When I received the call from an old biking buddy – yes, I was a biker – I was saddened to hear the news of a friend succumbing to the corona virus, leaving behind his wife, daughter and grandchildren. I still remain vigilant during these tumultuous times. It made me think about all of my brothers in the highest risk group. I spend time calling several of the brothers each day – checking to see if they are staying safe, addressing their questions, and having a brotherly conversation. Last night I watched a movie, The Banker, a movie centered on a bank, but is not about robbing it. The movie is based on events that took place in the 1950s and ’60s, Bernard Garrett and Joe Morris, African-American entrepreneurs who made themselves part of the real-estate game in Los Angeles, with the goal of getting rich (which they did) and, at the same time, of breaking the color line, making it possible for African-American citizens to move into formerly all-white neighborhoods. Knowing that the real-estate business is the right arm of the banking business, the two sought to maneuver their way into the latter. Yet due to the color of their skin, they could barely get through the door. So, they recruited a white man, Matt Steiner, to act as a front for them. The Banker is about men who dream big — not just about political freedom and racial equality, but about making money — at a time of suppressed opportunity. In order to make themselves two of the first African-American bankers, they had no choice but to hide their identity. Once they start using Steiner as a front, the two dress up, as a chauffeur and a janitor, to go into the banks and spy on board meetings. The movie is about a true story but it is also about Mu Lambda. Mu Lambda is a chapter that dares to dream big. It is focused on getting away from parties and purely social events to focus on the better good of the African American community. It has come to realize that nothing is given but must be pursued and achieved. Like Garrett and Morris, Mu Lambda is treading in unchartered territory. Mu Lambda is one of the only chapters with a $2,000,000 asset and list of brothers that read like a who’s who. Mu Lambda is a stone throw away from a partnership with a three trillion-dollar partner. When it comes to fruition, you will be able to say you helped make it happen at a time when the African American community need us most. Dream big, COVID-19 has changed the landscape of America and Alpha forever. If a chapter is reliant upon dues only, it will be unable to conduct programs benefitting the communities Alpha Phi Alpha was established to serve.

As I sit here feeling like most of you, that at some point we will wake from this horrible nightmare of what has now become reality. The way of life that we once knew seems to be no more. Going to the grocery store and pharmacy only, has become the new norm. As the DMV has now been issued a stay-in-home order, I continue to ask each brother to take time and reach out to another brother and check in to see if he and his family are well. Covid-19 is now the enemy and we still must protect ourselves and each other. I will continue to send the OneCallNow calls and text messages to reach out to brothers to see if there is any brother that may need assistance. As we continue to stay-in-home, brothers please try to incorporate some form of exercise and healthy eating into your daily routine. Eating healthy and maintaining some form of physical activity will help to strengthen your immune system while being limited to where you can go. As for the work of Alpha, we are trying to get as much accomplished as possible by other avenues such as telephone and video conferencing. Stay turn for more information how we plan to move to video conferencing for future meetings. As you have all heard, We Are In This Together! With that said brothers, if there is something you need that I can be of assistance with please do not hesitate to reach out. Stay safe, stay strong and stay well. 06.

Message from the Chaplain Dear Brothers: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. mourns and salutes the “Dean of the Civil Rights Movement” and our revered Brother - the Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery. His life and legacy of religious and civil rights contributions to the fabric of America is unparalleled. Brother Lowery’s spiritually courageous and uncompromising leadership forced the United States to open the doors of democracy to African American Citizens. Brother Lowery marched onward on the battlefield against institutionalized racism and poverty. His legacy to fight against injustice serves as a role model of transformational leadership for us all. He is the founder of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. As a result, Brother Lowery’s legacy shall continue through the members of our fraternity, as we continue our fight for liberty and justice for all. THE TEST OF A MAN is the fight that he makes,The grit that he daily shows,The way he stands upon his feet, And takes life’s numerous bumps and blows.
A coward can smile when there’s naught to fear. And nothing his progress bars,But it takes a man to stand and cheer, While the other fellow stars. It isn’t the victory after all.But the fight that a Brother makes.A man when driven against the wall, still stands erect and takes the blows of fate with his head held high, bleeding, bruised, and pale, Is the man who will win and fate defied, For he isn’t afraid to fail.

Message from the Membership and Reclamation Chair Greeting Brothers, Brother President has charged me with reclaiming a minimum of 50 brothers this fraternal year. The ask is not insurmountable because numerous brothers stated during the convention their intention of returning to the chapter. I cannot do it alone; I would like all brothers to assist me. It is not just about getting brothers back into the fold – we have some challenging days ahead of Alpha and the African-American community. The more brothers we have helping, the more work we can do in the community. Fraternally, Brother Timothy Fitzgerald, Membership and Reclamation Committee Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda has raised funds to provide the ladies a day at the hair salon. The date at the salon will be rescheduled once the social distancing ends. Brothers voted for the chapter to sponsor the dinners during the odd months (May 2nd, July 11th, September 5th, and November 7th). Teams of brothers will sponsor the even months (June 6th (Frank King’s team), August 1st (Tony Wilson’s team), October 10th Tim Fitzgerald’s team), and December 6th (Alvin Reave’s team). Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.
My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha
is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
