The Presidents’ Message Greetings brothers, As a reminder, we do not meet in July or August. Our next chapter meeting is the first Thursday in September at 7:06 pm – the repast will start at 6:30 pm. I also want all brothers to know that Mu Lambda’s calendar of events is on the last page of the Torch – please take the time to review it. The General Convention has ended. Major decisions were made – the price of chapter insurance has increased; grand tax and life membership remain the same. The field of candidates has been narrowed from six to two (Brothers Willis Lonzer and Roderick Smothers). The delegates determined the final two, and now it is your vote that will decide on our next general president. I ask that you become engaged this fraternal year because there are many changes taking place in Mu Lambda. We will be rolling out a new web site, chapter membership cards, chapter app for your phone which will contain the membership directory and electronic voting. We are attempting to do the online training for parliamentary procedure and the Alpha history book. We have a goal to reclaim 50 brothers this fraternal year. We have a Chief Fundraising Officer - I believe we are the first chapter in Alpha to have a Chief Fundraising Officer. We will be celebrating 96 years of existence on October 1, 2019. Please refer to the last page of the Torch to see the planned activities. We will be laying wreaths for two of Mu Lambda’s founders, Jewels Nathaniel A. Murray, and Robert H. Ogle. Brothers sent loud and clear messages in Las Vegas. They made it clear that hazing in the fraternity is no longer tolerated – brothers were suspended and expelled from the fraternity. It did not matter if the brother was college or alumni – expulsion was the order of the day. As we approach IMDP, we need to keep our eyes and ears open. When there is a violation, action will be taken, and excuses are not an option. Every brother, active or inactive has access to our standing orders, and if you fail to take the training or read the documents, your failure is not an excuse. The fraternity will hold each of you accountable. Brother Fitzgerald would like for you to invite all brothers without a chapter home to the Saturday, August 17 Nathaniel Allison Murray Brotherhood Brunch being held at the house. The purpose of the brunch is to fellowship and allow brothers (not candidates) who may not have a chapter home to fellowship with us. The brunch is free. We cannot escape politics – either we become part of the decision-making process or allow others to make decisions for us. One way or the other choices are going to be made. Mu Lambda’s Black Caucus Reception will take place Wednesday, September 11 – I hope you can be in attendance. Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the brunch this month. The Vice Presidents’ Message Greetings Brothers, I hope that you are enjoying your summer, spending time with family, and getting some much-needed mental relaxation. As I try to reclaim some of my time and resume my regular routines after returning from the General Convention, I was reminded why I joined this great fraternity. I think back on the past week, and there were so many great memories about this convention. Maybe it was the location or because some of Mu Lambda’s past members communicated to me that they would be at our September chapter meeting. I met old brothers, new brothers, and of course, many of you that attended the convention. The spirit of brotherhood ran deep throughout the convention. I had many conversations with brothers, some of whom I had never met. In each conversation, I soon noticed one thing yielded the same result, the name Mu Lambda. Brothers would ask me, “what chapter are you apart of?” Once I responded with Mu Lambda, you could see a sense of excitement in their eyes, followed by a look familiarity. Brothers, I will say to you that Mu Lambda has much respect inside and outside the walls of the chapter house. I felt a sense of renewed pride as I met and conversed with the brothers at the convention. As with college days, the 95th convention swiftly passed and has reminded us that silence is not an option as we as Alpha men have much more work ahead. While we continue to enjoy this last summer month, I would like to remind the brothers that the chapter retreat will be held at the chapter house on August 18, 2019, from 9 am – 2 pm. Please save the date as I will send out an agenda soon. We will utilize this time to reflect, create, and plan for the upcoming fraternal year. Continental breakfast will be available. If you or a brother you believe will be an excellent fit to chair or work on committees, please let me know asap. I’m looking for a social, marketing/promotion, and social media chair. Brothers, please keep in mind that all our monthly events are on the last page of the torch. Because we have a very busy calendar through December 2019, I will continue to send notification reminders via OneCallNow before events to allow you more time plan. Continue to enjoy the summer break, because as with all things, it too shall swiftly pass, and September will be here. Message from the Membership and Reclamation Chair Greeting Brothers, I had a good time at the General Convention in Las Vegas where Brotherhood was at the forefront. The proposals to raise grand tax and life membership fees did not pass. Since the proposals did not pass, we have to be realistic – we have to bring brothers back into the fold. Brother Neal has charged me with reclaiming a minimum of 50 brothers this fraternal year. The ask is not insurmountable because numerous brothers stated during the convention their intention of returning to the chapter. I cannot do it alone; I would like all brothers assist me. I would like for you to invite all brothers you know who are not affiliated with a chapter to the Saturday, August 17th Nathaniel Allison Murray Brotherhood Brunch being held at the house. The brunch is free. For every brother you reclaim who was not on Mu Lambda’s 2018-2019 financial roster, if the brother pays his chapter dues, you will receive $40. The $40 is an incentive to show that we appreciate your efforts. We also expect that any brother you reclaim, you will assist with getting him acclimated to life in Mu Lambda. It is not just about getting brothers back into the fold – we have some challenging days ahead of Alpha and the African-American community. As Membership and Reclamation Chair of Mu Lambda Chapter, I would like to bring greetings to you and extend an invitation for you to return to the chapter. I am proud to be a member of this chapter as Mu Lambda celebrates 95 years of serving Washington, DC since 1923. Since our charter, Mu Lambda Chapter has been an innovator, a builder, and a molder of men making a difference in the lives of many in the Washington Metropolitan area. Mu Lambda Chapter is working diligently to ensure that our programs and social activities continue to impact the community in a positive way by being a catalyst of change. Today, Mu Lambda stands as a beacon of light to the community and a strong source of leadership. Through our Henry Arthur Callis Academy, we continue to facilitate the growth of young males so they understand that leadership is not a burden but a responsibility. Staying true to Alpha’s core: we implement successfully the fraternity’s National Programs: Go-to-High School Go-to-School, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Project Alpha and Brothers’ Keeper. These four programmatic efforts are implemented through “out-of-the-box” formats to ensure that Mu Lambda Chapter is reaching the target audience. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Mu Lambda in not a monolithic chapter. It is rich in history, diversity and ready to serve. The youngest member of the chapter is 22, born in 1996, while the oldest is 98, born in 1920. Salaries range from $30,000 to $1,000,000 per annum. The membership is comprised of brothers initiated in 117 different chapters. Fifty-five life members. The lowest life member number is 691, while the highest in the chapter is 13910. Brothers list their race as African American, Afro-Hispanic, Caucasian, Multi-Racial, and West Indian/Caribbean. All brothers have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Two have Dental Degrees. Three have Medical Degrees. Eleven have MBA Degrees. Twenty-six have Doctorate Degrees. Twenty-six have Law Degrees. Twenty-eight have Masters’ Degrees as their highest level of education.

The request should come from the family, not the chapter forcing it upon the family. Part of any brother’s estate planning should be the designation of an Alpha brother to receive his paraphernalia or instructions for his loved ones to contact Mu Lambda for disposition. Official fraternity pins (e.g., official badge, life member pin, twenty-five-year pin, fifty-year pin, etc.) should be given to another brother, the chapter (Mu Lambda) or the General Organization to prevent it from getting into the hands of a non-member. Notify your family to give Mu Lambda and fraternal documents to Mu Lambda.

Message from the Fundraising Committee How Critical is Cashflow? We often believe that finding the next best investment leads to building real wealth. While investing is undoubtedly a pivotal component to the wealthbuilding process, the ultimate game changer is managing your cash flow. If you fail to manage your cash flow, you will not build your wealth nor keep it. When most people reflect on their current assets, the two most significant assets are usually their retirement plans through work and equity in their home. What do these two assets have in common? They are in an environment where you don’t have ease of access, you systematically pay into it, you take out the emotions, and you form accountability. This is an excellent recipe for success. I believe you must have an engrained philosophy of systematically saving money. Unfortunately, if you do not adopt this mindset, your money will be subject to things that feel good at the moment, rather than the future. It is imperative to remember that we only have a finite amount of income, and every dollar you earn should have a job description. No job description, no putting the money to work because Satan’s most prominent attack is noise and speed. Often, we let things that seem urgent get in front of that which is of the highest importance, like saving for your future vs. enjoying too many brunches with friends. Sacrifice is a part of the plan. We • • •
have three major phases in our lifetime. The pre-game (pre-retirement) The through game (during retirement) the end game (when we die)
We must ask ourselves, what do we want life to look like in each one of these phases? The key is to balance out the goals and make sure they are realistically achievable based on expected cash flows and that it is sustainable. Are your savings enough in the pre-game to be able to live the life you want in the through game? You can’t think you are going to wake up in the game and spend significantly less than you did in the pre-game. Once again, we must be realistic. Someone once told me that an expense once acquired, becomes a necessity. This conversation led me to believe that we should continuously do inventory in our lives. Some needs are not necessary, and it takes intentionality and
financial maturity to know the difference. The critical point here is to make sure you manage how you adjust your lifestyle as you earn more money. Every time your income goes up you should reflect on how you are advancing your savings, your current lifestyle modification and tracking system. Here are a few tips to remember. If you are not on track, then you should take a significant amount of your net earnings and put it towards retirement. If you are on track, take 50% of your increased new income and enjoy life more because tomorrow is not promised to you. Take the other 50% towards longterm savings. As a CFP® professional, some of the first questions I ask clients when they meet with me for a review is, “How is your cash flow? How much more do you make now net monthly income?” And my final comment is, “Great, what are you going to do with your half because I will be investing your other half.” The journey to financial success takes sacrifice. There is no easy way around it. It is vital to have an accountability partner on this journey. Think about if you had a trainer in the gym with you vs. working out alone. I understand we can’t all afford to have one but let’s use our imagination for a moment. If you have a trainer that shows up on time, work on the things you care about, and motivates you to do the extra rep, it will be a more productive experience. However, without discipline from a trainer, you may come and go whenever do the workouts that make you feel good and settle for safe instead of doing that extra rep. It takes discipline to build financial muscle memory, but anything is possible when you put your mind to it. As the summer comes to an end, we are extremely excited about the upcoming year. The Alpha Wives of Washington, D.C., Inc., was organized in 1950. Our mission is to support the goals and projects of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc., Mu Lambda Chapter, through political, civic, educational, cultural, and social activities. Additionally, our support to individuals and organizations include the following: • Civic: Provide financial and other support to daycare center for homeless children and their families (Bright Beginnings); provide financial support for homeless women (House of Ruth); provide support to Youth enrolled in regular and after school programs (The Bishop Walker School for Boys and The Fishing School); and provides assistance to nursing homes (Stoddard Baptist Home). • Educational: Provide academic and book scholarships to freshman and continuing college students who are graduates of District of Columbia Schools. Greetings Brothers, Welcome to the first Annual Mu Lambda “BATTLE OF THE BROTHERS FUNDS CHALLENGE!” On behalf of our Chapter President, we are excited about your participation in this event and look forward to crowning the winning team. In an effort to provide support, this brotherly competition will help raise funds for our Mu Lambda Foundation. Brothers will build teams embarking on a four-month challenge to raise a minimum goal of $5,000 per team. The team raising the most money will win the Funds Challenge Championship. Teams We will have twelve teams vying to be crowned “FUNDS CHALLENGE CHAMPION!” • • • • •
Each team will have a team captain, a max of ten brothers (including the team captain and bonus member), with a minimum of seven brothers. Each team will select a bonus team member from the Foundation and that member will be responsible for raising a minimum of $1,000. The $1,000 will count towards your team’s goal. Each member will be selected in order by the team captain. Team captains will select in the order determined by a lottery. Since this is about brotherhood, fundraising and fun, team captains can trade with another team captain.
Rules We must protect the chapter and foundation’s brand, so a set of rules will be established for the challenge. •

Message from the House of Ruth Committee Greetings Brothers, Brothers Jason Jefferson, Garrett Miller, Eddie Neal, and Byron L. Williams served the ladies of the House of Ruth on Saturday, July 20th. We arrived at 3:30 pm to set the table and deliver the meal. Unfortunately, we were unable to meet the scheduled time of 4:30 pm. We added a few last-minute additions to the menu that altered our preparation time by a few minutes. The menu was hot crabs, hot fried fish, baked chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, hot buttered rolls, ice tea, water, chocolate cake, peach cobbler, and in honor of Krispy Kreme’s birthday – two dozen Krispy Kreme glazed donuts. We did not have an opportunity to mingle with the ladies because we were busy rushing to serve the ladies. Brother President neglected to bring the yellow roses for the first time and I heard one of the ladies ask where were the yellow roses. Brother President politely failed to answer her question. We have to report that the brothers were unable to allow the ladies to select their rose of choice this month. In Brother President’s defense he admits that he scrapped the yellow roses at the last minute to allow the ladies the luxury of crabs and donuts. We are looking for assistance for the August 10th meal. Brothers, if you can cook, the ladies would appreciate your favorite dish. Many thanks are extended to Brother Arthur King for his hot peach cobbler. The women loved the cobbler. If you are unable to attend and serve the dish, arrangements will be made to serve the dish. We arrive at 3:30 and serve dinner promptly at 4:30 pm. We aim to serve the ladies a different balanced meal each month. All meals are hot and served on the premises. Please review prior issues of the Torch for a listing of the prior menus. In addition, the Health and Wellness Committee will be hosting another self-defense workshop for the ladies on Thursday, August 8th between 6:30 and 8:00 pm. What These Student Debaters Learned From the 2020 Democratic Debates WASHINGTON — For the 20 Democratic candidates who tussled onstage in Detroit last week for their party’s nomination, the debates were a chance to goose poll numbers, undercut rivals and wring donations from potential voters. For the nearly 200 students who attended a summer debate program last week run by the Washington Urban Debate League, the contests were something else: a lesson plan. The program, a two-week boot camp for middle and high schoolers held at the Washington Latin Public Charter School, enrolls mostly minority students from underserved backgrounds. The presidential debates offered a teachable moment, said David Trigaux, the league’s program director. “We always try to find ways to connect to what’s going on in the public discussion,” he said. “The timing of the debates couldn’t be better to provide examples of some things to do and some things not to do.” Across two harried nights of intraparty sparring, the campers, sorted into “labs” according to experience, found examples of both. They are not yet old enough to vote, much less stand for the highest office in the land. But they could probably debate circles around those who are. The camp has a scholastic feel; less hiking and canoeing, more nine-to-five instruction in the art of cross-examination and rebuttal. In a math classroom on Thursday, a lab of junior varsity debaters simulated Wednesday night’s presidential showdown, with each student adopting the role of a different candidate. “Global warming is the first thing we should focus on,” said Brooke Roberson, 12, giving a convincing impression of Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington, who has staked his 2020 run on climate change. Earlier that day, she hunched over a laptop watching clips of debate highlights, absorbing the candidates’ platforms, attack lines and speaking styles. “The first thing we have to worry about is how to beat Donald Trump,” countered Darrian Carroll, a University of Maryland doctoral student who helped lead the lab, mimicking former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. “We won’t stop global warming if we don’t beat Donald Trump.”
“But do you have a plan, other than to beat Trump?” pressed Tyler Davis, 13, channeling Representative Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii. Role-playing the presidential contests helps less experienced debaters hone their rhetorical skills, said Hiba Sheikh, 24, the lab’s other leader. It also magnifies differences. In the type of competition the campers practice, called policy debate, judges grade opposing teams, each composed of two debaters, according to the strength of their arguments as well as the evidence they present. “Thinking about presidential debates through a policy debate lens makes you really see what claims they are making and how they are substantiating those claims,” Ms. Sheikh said of the presidential candidates. “And often they’re just not substantiating them.” One floor away, a lab of 12 varsity debaters looked for parallels. The candidates’ liberal use of ad hominem attacks might not fly in a policy debate round, said Jackie Poapst, the assistant director for George Mason University’s debate team, who led the discussion. But deploying strong opening statements to prime an audience and stressing the far-reaching effects of policy certainly would. Ms. Poapst’s students watched Wednesday’s debate as a homework assignment. For over an hour, they picked apart performances, zeroing in on effective attacks (Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York and Ms. Gabbard) and key clashes (Senator Kamala Harris of California versus Mr. Biden on health care; Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey versus Mr. Biden on criminal justice). “It’s impressive just how much more they do than us and how much less they do than us at the same time,” said Timothy Neal, 15, comparing his fellow campers with the presidential hopefuls. “On one hand, we talk about one resolution a year, and they had, like, six of those in that one debate,” he added, using the term for the topic students debate over a 10-month season. “And on the other hand, we talk about one resolution a year, and we aren’t dodging questions and salting each other.” The presidential debates can also influence the varsity students’ own arguments. In policy debate, students present real-world proposals and actionable plans to enact them. Continued on next page

Being in Washington also has its advantages: Volunteer judges have included Capitol Hill staff members, a Secret Service agent and other government employees. On Friday, at the close of a campwide tournament, Mr. Ornstein read from letters addressed to the students from Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. (High school debate “set me up for success in college, law school, in advocacy and law practice, politics, public service, and, of course, winning arguments with my husband!” Mrs. Clinton wrote.) For some campers, studying the presidential contests made debate more relatable. “It’s cool to see that debating can be a real-life skill. It can persuade a lot of people,” said Shabad Singh, 12, who played Ms. Harris in her lab on Thursday.
That often means considering shifting political winds. This season’s resolution, that the United States limit arms sales to foreign governments, is complicated by the impending election, said Lola Rogin, 14. “If something political changes, and it could be anything, it changes the trajectory of debates.” In the past two years, the campers have sparred over issues like education and immigration — topics that bear directly on their own lives. Many of them come from immigrant backgrounds, and the issue of foreign arms sales can also sometimes hit close to home. “That’s something that they can really understand, because there’s gun violence in D.C.,” Mr. Trigaux said. Since its inception in 2015, the camp has exploded from just 32 students to hundreds. The league has grown from a handful of schools to nearly 50, all of them public schools in Washington and nearby Prince George’s County, Md. About 30 cities, including Baltimore, New York and Chicago, have urban debate leagues. (Detroit’s urban debate camp starts this week.) The leagues aim to bring debate to disadvantaged populations. The Washington league, which hosts tournaments during the school year, lowers barriers to participation, providing coaching resources and transportation to competitions. The camp, which is free, serves every attendee daily breakfast and lunch. “We will never make the kids pay anything,” said Norman J. Ornstein, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, whose foundation funds the camp. In 2015, Mr. Ornstein and his wife, Judy, started the foundation in memory of their son, Matthew, a former policy debate champion who died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. Instructions • In a blender, whip up frozen or fresh fruit, juice, and honey. 4 tablespoons butter 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup milk 2 cups of sliced fresh peaches or nectarines, or whole blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or a combination of fruits (or a 12-ounce package of frozen berries) 1 tablespoon sugar
Directions 1. Adjust oven rack to uppermiddle position, and heat oven to 350 degrees. 2. Put butter in an 8-inch square or 9-inch round pan; set in oven to melt. When butter hasmelted, remove pan from oven. 3. Whisk flour, 3/4 cup of sugar, baking powder and salt in small bowl. Add milk; whisk to form a smooth batter. Pour batter into pan, then scatter fruit over batter. Sprinkle with remaining 1 Tb. of sugar. 4. Bake until batter browns and fruit bubbles, 50 to 60 minutes. THE DREADED ROOT CANAL! Most individuals exhibit paroxysms of terror when informed that they have to receive a “root canal.” The expectation is one of severe pain and extreme discomfort. Most times this is not the case and the procedure when correctly performed should not be any more painful than any other procedure that most patients routinely experience. The name “root canal,” actually is a misnomer since all normal teeth have root canals. The canal is an anatomical structure or chamber within every tooth which houses nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels that contribute to the tooth’s vitality. These vessels are usually referred to as the “pulp” of the tooth. The canal in and of itself is simply a chamber in which the pulp resides. What patients really fear is the extirpation or removal of the pulp, which is necessary when bacterial infection invades the root canal chamber. Pain may be a sequela if the infection is acute. All teeth generally have three layers. The outermost layer visible in the mouth is a layer of dental enamel which is usually white in color. It is an extremely hard material. Underneath the enamel layer is a brown toned layer called the dentin. This layer is softer than enamel and is permeated by tiny tubules that terminate at the pulp. It serves, among other things, as a conduit for thermal sensation that sensitizes the tooth to great variations in temperature. Beneath the dentinal layer is the pulp. It is where the blood vessels and nerves reside in the tooth. This is where painful sensations are often most located because of the existence of nerve tissue. When an individual has a cavity, it is a result of bacterial activity that has breached the integrity of the enamel. This is referred to as dental decay. There is usually no pain when this occurs because the nerves are insulated by the dentin. If a cavity is restored at this time, there is no pain usually involved and sometimes dental anesthesia is not required. Restoration involves removal of all decayed material and replacement by either gold, amalgam or composite filling materials. If the tooth is left untreated, the decay or bacterial erosion continues and eventually enters the dentinal layer. Most times this occurs without sensation. As the decay begins to approximate the pulp, however, pain sensation may become evident. If the tooth is treated at this time, dental anesthesia is often necessary as all of the decay must be removed before a dental filling is replaced and the deeper the cavity, the closer it is to the pulp and naturally the more the need to block the pain sensation with dental anesthesia. If there is no intervention, however, and the bacteria invades the pulp, pain will usually be present, sometimes quite severe! The bacteria inflame the nerves and blood vessels
and help produce infectious exudate that is call pus. Since the walls of the pup chamber are not flexible, pressure builds up inside of the canal chamber and pain or a tooth ache is the result. When this happens, the treatment is the removal of the structures that constitute the pulp, the cleaning of the walls of the canals and replacement with an inert material that does not respond to thermal stimulation. Thus if a root canal is performed correctly, there should be no way that an individual would ever have pulpal pain in that tooth again. What pulpal extirpation constitutes, is the opening of the pulp chamber, allowing of trapped gases and built up exudate to escape, followed by cleaning out the root canal chamber and refilling it. The reason that pain is usually associated with pulpal extirpation is that most individuals delay treatment until there is a lot of infection in the tooth and surrounding area or when abscesses form. This occurs when the infected pulpal material spreads through the end of the root and invades the soft tissues in the mouth. Swelling and pain is the result. Often the result is an abscess. The pH of this infected exudate is usually acidic and the pH of the anesthestic is alkaline. As a result the dental anesthesia is often neutralized and does not effectively block the pain impulses, so that during the process of extirpation, pain is sometimes felt. Individuals who present with abscesses are best treated with antibiotics prior to the pulpal extirpation. This controls the infectious exudate, decreases the pH and allows the anesthesia to be more effective and pain is usually not a factor. The lesson to be learned is that frequent visits to the dentist will allow for early identification of caries or decay followed by treatment in the dentinal layer which is usually not painful. Rather than the prevailing attitude that many patients have which is that dentists only want them to visit even when they are no symptoms, is so that they can make more money, it should be evident that the earlier the diagnosis of dental disease, the less it costs to repair and the less painful it usually is! While all dentists are trained to treat pulpal infections, the specialist is called an Endodontist. Anterior teeth usually have one canal, posterior teeth have two, three, four or sometimes more canals and it might be prudent to seek the aid of a specialist for what may be more complicated the treatment. However, your concerns or experiences and how you understand and cope with these conditions may be different.

Why Does Mental Health Matter? Without mental health we cannot be healthy. Any part of the body—including the brain—can get sick. We all experience emotional ups and downs from time to time caused by events in our lives. Mental health conditions go beyond these emotional reactions to specific situations. They are medical conditions that cause changes in how we think and feel and in our mood. These changes can alter your life because they make it hard to relate to others and function the way you used to. Without proper treatment, mental health conditions can worsen and make day-to-day life hard. If you feel you or a loved one might be experiencing a mental health condition, remember that these are biological brain disorders. Anyone can develop a mental health problem. It isn’t your fault or your family’s fault. Seeking treatment can help you live a fulfilled life and can strengthen you and your family for the future. How Do Mental Health Conditions Affect The African American Community? Although anyone can develop a mental health problem, African Americans sometimes experience more severe forms of mental health conditions due to unmet needs and other barriers. According to the Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health, African Americans are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population. Common mental health disorders among African Americans include:
Major depression (/Learn-More/Mental-HealthConditions/Depression) Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (/LearnMore/Mental-Health-Conditions/ADHD) (ADHD) Suicide (/Learn-More/Mental-Health-Conditions/ Related-Conditions/Suicide), among young African American men Posttraumatic stress disorder (/Learn-More/ Mental-Health-Conditions/Posttraumatic- StressDisorder) (PTSD), because
African Americans are more likely to be victims of violent crime • African Americans are also more likely to experience certain factors that increase the risk for developing a mental health condition: • Homelessness. People experiencing homelessness are at a greater risk of developing a mental health condition. African Americans make up 40% of the homeless population. Exposure to violence increases the risk of developing a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. African American children are more likely to be exposed to violence than other children. Issues To Consider Different reasons prevent African Americans from seeking treatment and receiving quality care.

is a personal weakness or some sort of punishment from God. African Americans may be reluctant to discuss mental health issues and seek treatment because of the shame and stigma associated with such conditions. Many African Americans also have trouble recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, leading to underestimating the effects and impact of mental health conditions. Some may think of depression as “the blues” or something to snap out of. Because of the lack of information about mental health issues, it’s not always clear where to find help when you may need it. Fortunately, you came to the right place to learn about what mental health conditions are and how to access treatments and supports. Don’t let fear of what others may think prevent you or a loved one from getting better. One in 5 people is affected by mental illness. This means that, even if we don’t talk about it, most likely we have one of these illnesses or know someone who does.
Reluctance And Inability To Access Mental Health Services Only about one-quarter of African Americans seek mental health care, compared to 40% of whites. Here are some reasons why: • Distrust and misdiagnosis. Historically, African Americans have been and continue to be negatively affected by prejudice and discrimination in the health care system. Misdiagnoses, inadequate treatment and lack of cultural competence by health professionals cause distrust and prevent many African Americans from seeking or staying in treatment. • Socio-economic factors play a part too and can make treatment options less available. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2012, 19% of African Americans had no form of health insurance. The Affordable Care Act is making it easier and more affordable to get insured (/FindSupport/Living-with-a-Mental-Health-Condition/ Understanding-Health- Insurance).
Faith, Spirituality And Community In the African American community, family, community and spiritual beliefs tend to be great sources of strength and support. However, research has found that many African Americans rely on faith, family and social communities for emotional support rather than turning to health care professionals, even though medical or therapeutic treatment may be necessary. Faith and spirituality can help in the recovery process but should not be the only option you pursue. If spirituality is an important part of your life, your spiritual practices can be a strong part of your treatment plan. Your spiritual leaders and faith community can provide support and reduce isolation. Be aware that sometimes faith communities can be a source of distress and stigma if they are misinformed about mental health or do not know how to support families dealing with these conditions. Do rely on your family, community and faith for support, but you might also need to seek professional help.
Medications Some studies indicate that African Americans metabolize many medications (/Learn- More/ Treatment/Mental-Health-Medications) more slowly than the general population yet are more likely to receive higher dosages. This may result in a greater chance of negative side-effects and a decreased likelihood of sticking with treatment. Provider Bias And Inequality Of Care Conscious or unconscious bias from providers and lack of cultural competence result in misdiagnosis and poorer quality of care for African Americans. African Americans, especially women, are more likely to experience and mention physical symptoms related to mental health problems. Additionally, men are more likely to receive a misdiagnosis of schizophrenia when expressing symptoms related to mood disorders or PTSD. Given this bias and the negative impact they have on our care, it is easy to understand why so many African Americans mistrust health professionals in general and avoid accessing care. While you have a reason to doubt whether professionals will mistreat you or not, don’t let this fear prevent you from seeking care. The section below gives ideas on how to find the right provider for you.
Finding The Right Provider For You
Cultural Competence In Service Delivery Culture—a person’s beliefs, norms, values and language—plays a key role in every aspect of our lives, including our mental health. Cultural competence is a doctor’s ability to recognize and understand the role culture (yours and the doctor’s) plays in treatment and to adapt to this reality to meet your needs. Unfortunately, research has shown lack of cultural competence in mental health care. This results in misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment. African Americans and other multicultural communities tend to receive poorer quality of care. However, you can improve your odds of getting culturally sensitive care. While we recommend you go directly to a mental health professional (/Learn- More/Treatment/Typesof-Mental-Health-Professionals) because this is their area of expertise, if you do not feel comfortable right away, a primary care doctor is a great place to start. The primary care doctor might be able to start the assessment to determine if you have a mental health condition or help refer you to a mental health professional. Unfortunately, while you may prefer finding an African American mental health professional, this is not often possible because there are a small percentage of African American providers. The good news is that professionals are increasingly required to learn how to effectively treat people from diverse backgrounds. However, as mentioned before, many providers still lack cultural competence and do not know how to effectively treat African Americans. When meeting with your provider, ask questions to get a sense of their level of cultural sensitivity. Do not feel bad about asking questions. Providers expect and welcome questions from their patients since this helps them better understand you and what is important to you. Your questions give your doctor and health care team important information about you, such as your main health care concerns. Here are some questions you could ask: • •
Have you treated other African Americans? Have you received training in cultural competence

or on African American mental health? How do you see our cultural backgrounds influencing our communication and my treatment? How do you plan to integrate my beliefs and practices in my treatment?
Your mental health provider will play an important role in your treatment, so make sure you can work with this person and that you communicate well together. Mention your beliefs, values and cultural characteristics. Make sure that she understands them so that they can be considered in the course of your treatment. For example, mention whether you would like your family to be part of your treatment. If finances are preventing you from finding help, contact a local health or mental health clinic or your local government to see what services you qualify for. Expungement
I received a call from a family friend inquiring if his son would ever be able to get a job because of something on his record. This is neither legal advice nor to be construed as providing legal advice. It is meant to be thought provoking for the brothers to consider whether we should be doing more for our community. Each year the brothers of Mu Lambda works with the brothers of Beta on an annual expungement fair. According to Brother Fitzgerald’s statistics, Mu Lambda has 26 members with law degrees. My question is should Mu Lambda do more to help our community more than once per year. In no way am I advocating for Mu Lambda to become a public interest law firm, yet there are ways we can help partner those we serve with agencies capable of doing the actual legal work. There are different ways to expunge or seal a criminal record in the District of Columbia. Eligibility depends on several factors - first, what was the nature of the charge? For example, was the charge a felony or misdemeanor? Were you charged as an adult or juvenile? Second, what happened with the case? For example, was the charge no-papered or dismissed? Did the case result in a conviction? If so, on what charges? One way to have an arrest record sealed in the District of Columbia is to file a motion to seal on the grounds of actual innocence. D.C. Code § 16-802. In order to prevail under this type of motion, the person filing the motion must convince the judge either that the offense for which the person was arrested did not occur or that the offense did occur but that it was someone else who committed it. The standard of review for the motion is a preponderance of the evidence (more likely than not) if filed within four years of the date the prosecution was terminated. If the motion is filed beyond four years of this date, the evidence must be clear and convincing; that is, evidence that is highly probable or reasonably certain. Any type of offense – felony or misdemeanor – is eligible for relief under this type of motion. And this type of motion can be filed immediately after termination of the prosecution. The effect of a judge granting this motion is to restore the person to the status he or she occupied before being arrested or charged. In other words, if ever asked by anyone for any purpose whether or not he/she has ever been arrested or charged with a crime, the person can honestly and legally say no. D.C. Code § 16-802. For people who are not able to assert actual innocence, another way is to wait two years for eligible misdemeanors, three years for ineligible misdemeanors that were never papered, and four years for every other offense before filing the motion. Any open cases or any convictions after the arrest for which relief is sought render a person ineligible for such relief. A person who has been convicted of an eligible misdemeanor or felony violation under the Bail Reform Act must wait eight years after completion of sentence before filing a motion to seal the conviction. Any open charges or prior convictions would render the person ineligible for relief. The burden is on the person filing the motion to establish by clear and convincing evidence that it is in the interest of justice for the judge to grant relief. D.C. statute provides a special provision for people arrested for fake ID/misrepresentation of age. Expungement continued for this offense may file a motion to seal/expunge all records associated with the arrest six months following the date of either a conviction or dismissal of the charges or, if the charge was no-papered, six months after the arrest. The effect of an expungement under D.C. Code § 25-1002 is to restore the person to the position he/she occupied before the arrest. A person who has been the subject of juvenile proceedings in D.C. can also file a motion to have all records associated with the case sealed. The person needs to wait until two years after the person has been released from court supervision. In addition, the person cannot have been subsequently convicted of a crime or adjudicated delinquent/in need of supervision. Upon entry of the order, the proceedings will be treated as if they never occurred. D.C. Code § 16-2335. A person who has been arrested for, charged with, or convicted of a criminal offense that was later decriminalized or legalized may file a motion to seal the record at any time. For example, now that possession of a small amount of marijuana is now legal in D.C., people who were arrested or convicted for unlawful possession of marijuana might be eligible for expunging their criminal record under this provision. The effect of expunging the record is to restore the person to the position he/she occupied before the arrest. D.C. Code § 16-803.02. The Youth Rehabilitation Act in D.C. allows the court to set aside a conviction for a person who was under the age of 25 at the time the offense occurred after the person has successfully served his/her sentence. It does not matter how old the person is today or whether or not the Youth Act was even in effect at the time of the offense. In other words, the Act’s provisions are retroactive. The set aside has the same effect as sealing the record. The set aside only applies to the conviction. To seal records of the arrest, the person must still file a motion under D.C. Code § 16-803. There are ways to seal/expunge records of a drug offense in D.C. The first way is to seal a misdemeanor drug arrest or conviction under the Criminal Records Sealing Act. The second and better way, if available – would be to expunge the record under a provision of the Controlled Substances Act: § 48-904.01(e). Applying only to people who have never been convicted of a drug offense before, either in D.C. or elsewhere, treatment under this provision requires the court to determine that the defendant is eligible at the time of the guilty plea or verdict. Instead of entering the guilty judgment into the record and sentencing the defendant, the court puts the defendant on a period of probation for up to a year. If the court finds during this period that the defendant has violated the terms of this probation, the court will enter the guilty judgment and convict the defendant. If, however, the court finds that the defendant has completed the probation successfully, it can discharge the defendant from probation and dismiss the case. The defendant can then file a motion to expunge his or her record. One benefit of treatment under this provision is that it applies to both felony and misdemeanor drug cases. Starting Tuesday, May 7th, Mu Lambda will be rolling out and hosting the Mu Lambda Literary Society, every week at 7:06 pm. The Mu Lambda Literary Society is a Mu Lambda initiative, where we come together as brothers and discuss the two volume Alpha history book over a period of months. It will be a potluck affair facilitated by a different brother each week. Brothers can participate in person or via conference call. We will start with volume 1, chapter 1 of the twenty second printing of the history book and conclude with volume 2, chapter 8. There are twenty chapters in volume 1 and eight chapters in volume 2. This is totally voluntary. If you are interested, participate for the weeks that you can. You are not required to purchase the new history book. Brother Robert L. STATEMENT: Alpha Phi Alpha Stands with U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings LAS VEGAS – Earlier today, President Donald Trump lashed out at U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, calling him a “bully” and referring to Baltimore, the city Cummings represents, as being a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live.” The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., condemn President Trump for his racist, vile and insensitive remarks about Representative Cummings and the great city of Baltimore, home of our venerable brother, the late Justice Thurgood Marshall where our corporate headquarters is located. Representative Cummings has proudly and boldly represented Maryland’s 7th congressional district since 1996. He currently serves as Chair of the House Oversight Committee. Representative Cummings is an accomplished attorney known for speaking truth to power as he calls out the actions of this country’s current president. The Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., stand with Representative Cummings. We encourage him to continue leading in a way that represents the best interests of the residents of Baltimore and, by extension, the citizens of these United States. ###

General President Election Finalists As General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.®, I am pleased to announce that the delegates of the 113th Anniversary and 95th General Convention voted to nominate two candidates that will move forward in the General President election process. The two General President candidates to move forward are Brother Willis Lonzer and Brother Roderick Smothers. The two final candidates will continue to campaign until the official ballots are mailed to each active brother. The submitted ballots will be counted at the Board of Directors meeting in July of 2020. The newly elected General President will assume office January 1, 2021. "Please join me in extending our best wishes to the other four candidates that offered themselves for service in Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. We look forward to continuing the electoral process in keeping with Alpha tradition” said General President Everett B. Ward.

Ward offers support for U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings and condemns President Trump’s remarks about him and Baltimore city as “racist and insensitive” LAS VEGAS, NV – Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.® and its General President Everett B. Ward, Ph.D concluded its 113th Anniversary and 95th General Convention this past weekend with a pledge to aggressively fight against white supremacy and other issues targeting the African American community following a series of Fraternal business meetings, workshops, social activities, awards ceremony, and a public program featuring Alpha mayors, one of which was Presidential candidate Wayne Messam, other political leaders and leaders of other Black Greeklettered organizations at the Bally’s Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Its convention with its theme, “Alpha Advocacy in Action: Silence Is Not An Option,” from Wednesday, July 24 through Sunday, July 28, trained and inspired members to actively pursue the Fraternity’s advocacy and social justice agenda, which encompasses voter engagement, census education and mobilization as well as a host of other issues through meetings and workshops. On Friday, the Fraternity issued a public statement supporting U.S Representative Elijah Cummings who President Donald Trump attacked, who ironically called him “a bully,” as well as, condemned the President’s remarks as racist and insensitive, which denigrating the city of Baltimore as a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” where “no human being would want to live.” Alpha Phi Alpha’s corporate headquarters is also in Baltimore. The Inspirational True Story of Brian Banks Brothers, The major motion picture, Brian Banks (portrayed by Aldis Hodge), is the inspirational true story of Brian Banks, who was an All-American high school football star committed to the University of Southern California at the age of sixteen and finds his life upended when he is wrongly convicted of a crime he didn't commit. Despite the lack of evidence, Banks is railroaded through a broken justice system and sentenced to a decade of prison and probation. Years later, with the support of Justin Brooks (portrayed by Greg Kinnear) and the California Innocence Project, Banks fights to reclaim his life to fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL. The film also stars Sherri Shepherd and Melanie Liburd. One of the Executive Producers of the film, Brother Tirrell D. Whittley, a Spring 1993 initiate of the Beta Nu Chapter at Florida A&M University, offered a Q&A discussion after the special screening of the film during our 95th General Convention in Las Vegas, NV. THE EAST STATE JAZZ BAND The East State Jazz band comprises entirely of brothers from the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity who reside in the Washington, DC , metropolitan area. It developed from a 2012 request by the Chair of the event for entertainment at a breakfast celebrating the Fraternity’s founders.

2017, IUL brother Darryl Parker, a Delta Kappa chapter initiate was added to the group’s percussion section. In 2019, Brother Emerson departed the band to pursue a personal musical career and Brother James Huntley returned as the keyboard player. At present, the ninepiece ensemble specializes in playing the music of the jazz greats such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Brother Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and others. The band has also extended its repertoire to include jazz renditions of James Brown’s music, as well as other R&B/Soul artists.
Brother Ryle Bell, a saxophone player and a chapter’s representative to the Founder’s Day Breakfast Committee volunteered to acquire the talent to fulfill this request. Despite a rather short lead time, he contacted keyboardist and fellow Omicron Eta Lambda brother Milton Costen, and with Bro. Bell on alto saxophone they decided to perform for the occasion. On the morning of the breakfast, another Alpha Brother, Everett Martin, a Gamma Iota initiate and member of the Omicron Lambda chapter and trumpet player, asked to participate with Brothers Bell and Costen after remembering that he had his instrument in the trunk of his car. His offer was accepted and the three brothers provided the entertainment for that occasion. Mu Lambda chapter and alto/baritone saxophonist Brother James Heck, IV, who was present at the breakfast, indicated an interest in joining the group after the performance and was accepted. He became the fourth brother to join the group. With the addition of Brother Heck, Brother Bell switched to playing the tenor saxophone. After that performance, several other DC area Brothers attending the breakfast, indicated their interest in joining the group and they began to meet and rehearse formally. By 2013, the group would add drummer/percussionist John Harris III, an Eta Zeta initiate affiliated with Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Silver Spring, MD, his fellow IUL brother and alto saxophonist Eric Elmore (Alpha Chapter), electric bass player and member-at-large Brother Harry Jackson, III (Gamma Sigma), OHL Brother and keyboardist James Huntley, (who replaced Brother Costen due to outside obligations) and trumpeter Brother Charles Hines, Jr. of Pi Upsilon Lambda, Prince George’s County, MD. These additions rounded out the septet. In tribute to our fraternity’s meeting place at 411 East State Street, Ithaca, New York, the group named itself the “East State Jazz Band.” In early 2015 as obligations caused Brother Huntley (who Pastors a church in Prince George’s County) to step away from the band he was replaced on keyboards by Kappa Epsilon Lambda brother Anthony Emerson. The band was on its way and began performing regularly in the Washington DC metropolitan area. In
East State Jazz has performed at the Alpha Phi Alpha 2016 Eastern Region Conventions in Baltimore and Albany, as well as functions for many Alpha chapters in the region, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Virginia Chapter in Quantico and various events around the Greater Washington DC metropolitan area. Other performances include the 2018 Howard University College of Dentistry Black History month program, The Four Seasons Historic Virginia Clubhouse African American Heritage series in Dumfries, Va. , Omicron Eta Lambda chapter’s 2018 Scholarship brunch, the Darryl Haley Bed and Breakfast jazz celebration in Luray, Va., and the U.S. recreation Departments Music series at the Lincoln Memorial. Recent performances include the 2019 Eastern Region convention in Albany, New York, the Takoma Station Jazz Club in Washington, DC. in May 2019 and the House of Ruth, a home for battered women. The band has a Facebook site where photos and musical clips are available. Message from the Editor Greeting Brothers, Summer is nearing an end, and I thought the only thing we had to worry about this summer was the heat. America has failed, in my eyes, to stand up to its ideals and promises. Or maybe that only applies to Americans with dark skin. We have lost our way and place value on things that have no substance. We have given up on family and decided to be a single parent is better, yet when most can’t afford to live on one income. I believe we have participated in the self-destruction campaign aimed at dividing and conquering black power, black pride, black love, black wealth, etc. We are at war, and the battlefield is Capitol Hill!
