JEWEL OGLE’S BIOGRAPHY 1. Robert Harold Ogle entered the career secretarial field and had the unique privilege of serving as a professional staff member to the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations. He was an African American pioneer in his Capitol Hill position. He proposed the Fraternity s colors and was Alpha Chapter s first secretary. Ogle joined Kelley in working out the first ritual and later became a charter member of Washington s Mu Lambda Chapter. He died in 1936. 2. Robert Harold Ogle was born on April 3, 1886, in Washington, D.C., to Jeremiah and Mary Ellen Ogle. He attended the public schools in Washington. From 1901-1905, he was a student at the M Street School. The school was considered one of the finest preparatory schools for African-Americans in the city. Most of the students were children of working-class parents, and admission required the successful completion of grammar school. With only 530 seats, it was very competitive. The students had to pay for books and supplies. Students were required to take English, history, algebra, Latin, and physics or chemistry. Electives included French, German, Spanish, Greek, history, and other advanced courses, including geometry and political economy. M Street school had a cadet corps and often performed on the White House lawn, also. Ogle was enrolled in a fouryear liberal arts program and a twoyear business education program. Ogle arrived at the end of Robert Terrell s tenure as principal and the beginning of Anna Julian Cooper’s as principal. After graduation in 1905, Robert Harold Ogle entered Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. 3. After graduating from Cornell in 1909, Jewel Ogle returned to his home of Washington D.C., where he entered the secretarial field, finding employment for the United States Senate Appropriations Committee. An authority on Parliamentary procedures, Jewel Ogle, received his training while working under the chairmanship of the late Senator Francis E. Warren of Wyoming. In that position, he developed a keen knowledge of fiscal affairs of the Federal Government, and a habit of careful research. He also clerked
with two Washington Municipal Judges, Brother James A. Cobb, and Armond W. Scott. He married the former Helen Moore and moved to Richmond, Virginia, for a short period. She died, leaving him with two daughters Helen Ogle (Atkins) and Mary Ogle (Wilson). He remarried Marea Scott. 4. A lifelong resident of Washington, D.C., Jewel Ogle and his family resided at 1721 T Street, N.W. In 1923, he, along with Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and future historian and General President Charles Harris Wesley, chartered the Mu Lambda Chapter, where he was an active member of the chapter until his death. Jewel Ogle was a dedicated Brother from the start. It was at the home of Archie and Annie Singleton (411 East State Street, Ithaca, New York) in Jewel Ogle s disheveled combination study and bedroom that the Fraternity took shape. In December of 1905, as the desire to become a fraternity was growing, Jewel Ogle began investigating a news item he had seen in the Chicago Defender newspaper. He had returned to Washington for the Christmas holidays and saw an article which told of the establishment of the Pi Gamma Omicron Fraternity at Ohio State University. He wrote the registrar for information and received a reply that there was no such organization. They later found out that the Fraternity had been at Ohio State but had disintegrated. 5. At the first initiation banquet, Jewel Ogle spoke on “Welcome Brother,” and it was he who made the motion to establish Beta Chapter at Howard University in December of 1907. It was Jewel Ogle who proposed the colors of “Old Gold and Black” for the organization. Noted for his excellent Spencerian penmanship, he served as the first secretary of Alpha Chapter. Also, Ogle and Brother J. P. Boags wrote what was to become the first song for the Fraternity, sung to the tune of “Maryland, My Maryland”: Sons of Alpha are we, One in love and charity, Let our thoughts of sadness fly, For our own, our Alpha Phi! Chorus Courage, Brothers, banded we All through life to eternity, Let our hearts in joyous praise Sing of Alpha through endless days.

6. In 1927, Jewel Ogle chaired the Fraternity’s first Historical Commission with Jewels George Biddle Kelley, Vertner Woodson Tandy, Henry Arthur Callis, and Past General Presidents Charles H. Garvin and Roscoe Conklin Giles. In a letter to the Brothers, Jewel Ogle wrote the following plea in the December 1927 issue of The Sphinx: “We are familiar with the resplendent record of achievement marking the rapid growth of Alpha Phi Alpha in numbers and power. We know that its fundamental principles are true and strong. We believe that the men of the College world and other citizens of the United
States see it in the embodiment of all that is noble in Negro manhood. Let us make our achievements a matter of permanent record. Urge your chapter to reply early to the questionnaire, which is being sent out by the Historical Commission. It is your mandate- Help us to put it over.” His efforts, along with Brother Wesley’s, produced the first edition of The History of Alpha Phi Alpha: A Development in Negro College Life in 1929. 7. When the Twelfth Annual Convention of the Fraternity opened in December 1927, at the Mt. Zion Congregational Temple in Cleveland, Ohio, the Annual Founder’s Address was delivered by Jewel Ogle. According to the February 1928 issue of The Sphinx, Brother Ogle gave a “heart to heart talk, directing attention to some fundamental prerequisites for the future progress of Alpha Phi Alpha.” In 1931, Jewel Ogle, along with founders George Biddle Kelley, Vertner Woodson Tandy, Henry Arthur Callis, and Charles Henry Chapman, attended the 25th Anniversary Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. Following the convention, he shared some thoughts about the future of the Fraternity: “Alpha Phi Alpha undoubtedly faces the most challenging test in its history. It is of vital importance that we seriously consider the contribution of every brother may make for the good of our Fraternity.”

The Presidents’ Message Brothers, There is no place like home. Approximately 30 years ago we did not have The Torch as it is called today – it was called “Alpha Newsletter.” Brother LeRoy Lowery, III, announced a contest in the December 1989 “Alpha Newsletter” to rename Mu Lambda’s newsletter. Brother Vernon S. Gill, Mu Lambda’s immediate past president at the time, won the contest and named the newsletter “The Torch.” Brother William D. Thomas was the first editor of the January 1990 edition of “The Torch.” Mu Lambda has done some wonderful things while serving Alpha Phi Alpha and the District of Columbia for 96 years. I take great pride reading the comments from the leaders of the House of Ruth acknowledging the great work Mu Lambda is doing for the ladies. I am jubilated to see the great things you are doing for So Others Might Eat (SOME), Martha’s Table, the Alpha Wives, young men at Hart Middle School and Ballou High School. I look in amazement at how well you treat our 24 bothers with 50 or more years in the fraternity. I watch the admiration and respect you show our senior brothers. Brother McGann takes time out of his professional day to ensure brothers are served an excellent meal. He is a professional chef who can demand top dollar for the meals he serve Mu Lambda. He never complains. When I say there is no place like home, I am talking about the aforementioned things as well as the rich history we get to see and experience every month. When we walk into a meeting, we get to see Mu Lambda’s banner proudly displayed on the wall of our house. We get to see the Jewels proudly displayed in our meeting space. We get to see the 6th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, and 28th General Presidents who were all members of Mu Lambda proudly displayed on our walls. We get to sit in our Black and Old Gold chairs. Brother Kenneth Holbert, 76 years in the fraternity reminds the brothers every meeting – there is no need to rush, this is our house, we can stay as long as we want. There is no place like home. Mu Lambda is a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and it is also a business. We have stakeholders, investors and community contributors who partner with us financially and socially. Along with our dues and fundraising efforts, collectively, they help us keep our organizations (chapter and foundation) afloat. We function off of three things: reputation, members, and our consumers. If our members are displaying a poor image of what Mu Lambda represents, Mu Lambda’s brand becomes tainted and undesirable, thus resulting in a digression of potential members, sponsors, investors, etc. I do not worry about Mu Lambda because I know it is the School for the Better Making of Men. We must continue to enter the house with a positive attitude and check each other constantly in a brotherly manner. Greetings to the most noble men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter. I hope this message finds you at peace and in good spirits now that Thanksgiving has passed and Christmas is around the corner. It’s hard to believe that only a couple months ago it was Halloween and now we are in the month of December. This year has truly flown by, but not before all the hard work was done by the brothers of Mu Lambda.

The brothers of Mu Lambda have so much to be thankful for and so much to look forward to in 2020. As we continue to press forward in 2019, let us not forget about our ongoing events on the Mu Lambda Calendar in the Torch (i.e. Martha’s Table, House of Ruth, Alpha Self-Defense Workshop, etc.) to name a few. Also, I believe Bro. Armstrong is heading Operation Holiday Giveback. If you have canned goods, clothes, shoes etc. please bring them to the December 5 chapter meeting. Also this month is the annual CSFA toy drive chaired by Bro. Armstrong. More information will be communicated by Bro. Armstrong. Brothers please take an hour or two if you can to help out these committees any way you can. We need more brothers involved. Brothers that came out to assist with feeding the women at the House of Ruth this month, thank you! Bros. Eddie Neal, Malcolm Carter, Al Williams, Tony Williams, Mike Young and myself. The women were extremely happy and pleased as always and are looking forward to their December dinner. In conclusion, I would like to remind brothers that we are in need of two committee chairs, Public Policy and Fund Raiser. If you are interested in either of these committees please reach out to me ASAP. Continue doing the great of Alpha and I hope to see you at the December chapter meeting.

Message from the Membership and Reclamation Chair Greeting Brothers, Brother President has charged me with reclaiming a minimum of 50 brothers this fraternal year. The ask is not insurmountable because numerous brothers stated during the convention their intention of returning to the chapter. I cannot do it alone; I would like all brothers to assist me. It is not just about getting brothers back into the fold – we have some challenging days ahead of Alpha and the African-American community. As Membership and Reclamation Chair of Mu Lambda Chapter, I would like to bring greetings to you and extend an invitation for you to return to the chapter. I am proud to be a member of this chapter as Mu Lambda celebrates 95 years of serving Washington, DC since 1923. Since our charter, Mu Lambda Chapter has been an innovator, a builder, and a molder of men making a difference in the lives of many in the Washington Metropolitan area. Mu Lambda Chapter is working diligently to ensure that our programs and social activities continue to impact the community in a positive way by being a catalyst of change. Today, Mu Lambda stands as a beacon of light to the community and a strong source of leadership. Through our Henry Arthur Callis Academy, we continue to facilitate the growth of young males so they understand that leadership is not a burden but a responsibility. Staying true to Alpha’s core: we implement successfully the fraternity’s National Programs: Go-to-High School Go-to-School, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Project Alpha and Brothers’ Keeper. These four programmatic efforts are implemented through “out-of-the-box” formats to ensure that Mu Lambda Chapter is reaching the target audience. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Mu Lambda in not a monolithic chapter. It is rich in history, diversity and ready to serve. The membership of the chapter ranges in age 23 to 99. Salaries range from $30,000 to $1,000,000 per annum. The membership is comprised of brothers initiated in 117 different chapters. Fifty-five life members. The lowest life member number is 691, while the highest in the chapter is 13910. Brothers list their race as African American, Afro-Hispanic, Caucasian, Multi-Racial, and West Indian/Caribbean. All brothers have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Two have Dental Degrees. Three have Medical Degrees. Eleven have MBA Degrees. Twenty-six have Doctorate Degrees. Twenty-seven have Law Degrees. Twenty-eight have Masters’ Degrees as their highest level of education.

Rum Cake!
Ingredients • 1 cup chopped walnuts • 1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix • 1 (3.4 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix • 4 eggs • 1/2 cup water • 1/2 cup vegetable oil • 1/2 cup dark rum • 1/2 cup butter • 1/4 cup water • 1 cup white sugar • 1/2 cup dark rum Add all ingredients to list Directions 1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch Bundt pan. Sprinkle chopped nuts evenly over the bottom of the pan. 2. In a large bowl, combine cake mix and pudding mix. Mix in the eggs, 1/2 cup water, oil and 1/2 cup rum. Blend well. Pour batter over chopped nuts in the pan. 3. Bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Let sit for 10 minutes in the pan, then turn out onto serving plate. Brush glaze over top and sides. Allow cake to absorb glaze and repeat until all glaze is used. 4. To make the glaze: in a saucepan, combine butter, 1/4 cup water and 1 cup sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat and continue to boil for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in 1/2 cup rum. Brother Miller

Ingredients • 1/2 tbsp olive oil • 2 onions finely diced • 2 sticks celery • 3/4 cup chopped mushrooms • 5 cups cauliflower florets
Alpha Punch Recipe Drink of the month of December
1 1/2 cups ground pork 1/4 cup chopped pecans 1 1/2 tbsp fresh sage 1/2 cup chicken broth 2 eggs 1/2 tsp pepper Instructions 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (390 degrees Fahrenheit) 2. Start by removing the stalk of the cauliflower and breaking the head up into small florets. Try to keep the florets uniform in size and not too big or chunky, otherwise they won’t cook evenly. Place all of the florets into a large bowl. 3. In a large pot heat the olive oil on medium heat and add in the diced onions, celery and mushrooms and cook for approximately 5 minutes until the veggies have softened. Pour the cooked mixture into the bowl with the cauliflower and set aside. 4. Cook the sausage for approximately 5 minutes until well cooked. Add the meat to the bowl along with the chopped sage, pecans, eggs and chicken stock. Season with salt and pepper and toss

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Brothers, Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancer-free. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular check-ups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. Message from the Alpha Wives of Washington, D.C. Inc. On behalf of the Alpha Wives of Washington, D.C., we wish you a happy and joyful holiday season. To kick off the festivities, the Alpha Wives donated holiday decorations to the Mu Lambda Community Center and decorated to ensure the decorations were in place prior to Mu Lambda’s December chapter meeting. Pictures of the decorations are in this issue of the Torch. We hope you enjoy them. Also, in support of Mu Lambda’s efforts in providing robes to the women at the House of Ruth, the Alpha Wives will be wrapping the robes to be gifted later this month. Additionally, on December 14, 2019, the Alpha Wives will host its annual Holliday Party at the Mu Lambda Community Center from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. The event will include good food, a live band, raffles, and good old fashion fun. Mu Lambda’s Visit With Brother Lee Tyler Sunday, November 10th, Brother LeRoy Lowery and I visited with Brother Lee Tyler. Also, in attendance were Brother Tyler’s daughter, Nancy Tyler, and one of his masonic brothers. Brother Tyler is 98 years of age, born Thursday, September 15, 1921. He was initiated through Mu Lambda Chapter, Tuesday, October 1, 1968. He has 51 years in the fraternity, is Life Member 2495 and continues to pay his dues to Mu Lambda. He was the Dean of the Spring 1984 line - Wendel P. Gardner, Jr.; Jerry E. Hargrove, Jr.; Frederick W. Jones; William M. Joyner; Anthony Lee; LeRoy Lowery, III; and William R. Spaulding. He is a former WM of John F. Cook Lodge Number 10 where he remains financial. Those in attendance at Mu Lambda’s 2018 Charter Day Brunch might recall Brother Tyler receiving his 50-year pin during the brunch. Brother Tyler is of sound mind and never complains. He receives a color hard copy of the Torch every month. It was an enjoyable Sunday, we arrived promptly at 1 pm, stayed about four hours watching football and chatting about old times in Mu Lambda. We laughed loud and often. Brother Tyler is just one of our brothers 90 years of age or older. I have reached out to our Brothers’ Keeper Chair, Brother Carlos DeBose, seeking to have Brother Tyler and all of our 90 plus year of age brothers (Walter Robinson, Sr.; Willie McGee; Arlester Brown; Kenneth Holbert; Horace Dawson, Jr.; Hezekiah Smith; Franklin De Laine Sr.; and Garnett Wood) in attendance at our December chapter meeting. Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta’s Fall Dance Saturday, November 9 th , I had the luxury of attending the Annapolis Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta’s fall dance. It was a wonderful affair where the room was filled with the sisters of Delta Sigma Theta and their guests. The ladies combined social, fundraising, and community service into one event. It was dinner, dancing, food drive, silent auctions, raffles, and discussion of the upcoming census. The ladies inquired if Mu Lambda would have an interest in a future joint venture. I had the honor of supervising their treasure chests where they collected $900. I also had the distinct honor of assisting with their can food drive which was donated to a local church. mulambdafoundation.org The mission of the Mu Lambda Foundation, a 501(C)3 organization, is service to mankind, the promotion of scholarship, and the enhancement of knowledge and achievement of males of all ages. Our deepest purpose as an organization is to be the catalyst in communities by helping to support the health and well being of people. To prevent and alleviate human suffering while enabling people to realize their full potential by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The Foundation is the charitable arm of Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first African American intercollegiate fraternity, was founded in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The Foundation’s charitable activities include the Henry Arthur Callis Academy, a mentoring program for male students in grades 9 – 12; Project Alpha, an anti-teen pregnancy program oriented to males; work with the DC Food Bank; partnering with the District of Columbia Public School system programs, including Boy Scouts and Youth Court; assisting at the Ronald McDonald House and The House of Ruth, where we serve meals to residents on a monthly basis; and college scholarships for needy youth. The Foundation has donated over $310,000 in scholarships over the past 20 years. The Henry Arthur Callis Academy is conducted at Frank Ballou Senior High School in Washington, DC. Meeting monthly with up to 20 students, the Foundation members and Ballou staff address college preparedness, mentoring, job shadowing, college visits and social interactions. The Foundation has a five-year strategic plan that will create opportunities to positively impact rates of success of local African American male youth along their trajectory from positive academic and social experiences in middle and high school, high school graduation, college entrance, and college completion. When executed, our strategic plan will provide a full range of Academy experiences and activities for African American young men in grades 9 - 12.

Selecting, Applying to, and Financing College (Parents encouraged to attend) 3. Presentation Skills and Public Speaking 4. Selecting a College Major 5. Etiquette and Social Skills in Professional Settings Mentoring/Job Shadowing • Each Scholar is mentored throughout the Academy and beyond • Scholars shadow their mentor at the mentor’s place of employment for the purpose of exposing the Scholar to the mentor’s professional role and responsibilities College/University Visit • Scholars spend a day at a local college or university and shadow college students as they attend classes and navigate the college environment Social Events & Positive Interactions • Scholars participate in social events and interactions that are positive, healthy, empowering, and affirming Black & Gold Gala Scholars are recognized at the annual Mu Lambda Chapter Black & Gold Gala each year. “This is our first task – caring for our children. This project is designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young males ages 12-15 years. Designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions. The goals of Project Alpha programs are: 1. Sharing knowledge by combating ignorance and fear with factual information. 2. Changing attitudes by providing motivation toward positive changes in sexual behavior. 3. Providing skills by creating a sense of empowerment and self-esteem. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS: Provides education for young males 12-15 years old on sexuality, fatherhood and the role of males in relationships. • •

Message from the House of Ruth Committee Greetings Brothers, Brothers Malcolm Carter, Eddie Neal, Albert Williams, Tony Wilson, Mike Young, and I served the ladies of the House of Ruth on Saturday, November 23rd. The November menu was turkey loaf, chicken casserole, green beans, corn, hot buttered rolls, pound cake, apple pie, cheese cake, water, and sweet tea. The ladies were also provided individual yellow roses. We are seeking sponsors for the December 21st meal. The ladies have requested the following menu for December: fried chicken, fish, strawberry cake, chocolate cake, covered strawberries or cherries, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, tea, water, and ice cream. If you can cook, the ladies would appreciate your favorite dish. If you cannot cook and are willing to donate the funds or the ingredients, we will work with you to turn it into a wonderful meal for the ladies. We have not built the food service into the chapter’s 2019-2020 budget. You might recall during November’s chapter meeting we asked if 50 brothers could donate twenty dollars each to secure bath robes for the ladies. We will deliver the 50 bath robes to the ladies on the 21st. If you are unable to attend and serve the dish, arrangements will be made to serve the dish. The program was attended by 8 college females and five were repeat attendees. Thank you Brothers for your support and participation as we are working to increase the confidence in women to avoid becoming victims of sexual assault. The next self-defense workshop will be the last Thursday in Jan. 2020.

AMALGAM FILLINGS…GOOD OR BAD? Several years ago there was a great flap about the use of amalgam fillings in patients because they contain mercury. As usual, when many of these scare reports surface, the resolution is not as well publicized as the original scare and so now that the hysteria has died down, it may be a good time to discuss the situation as currently known. The Center for disease control (CDC) located in Atlanta is the entity that usually gets to scientifically address most public health issues and issue their findings to the FDA. They have concluded that dental amalgams are not a health risk. If you remember, several years ago there was also a great scare in the profession of dentistry related to the transmission of the HIV virus in dental offices. While this matter resulted in increased infection control and the use of gloves by dentists, little evidence was elicited that supported the charge that HIV was being spread by way of dental treatment. As a matter of fact, one of the major cases cited in Florida where a young patient contracted HIV from a dentist, it was found that the dentist had knowingly inoculated her with infected blood. The common feeling today is that dentists are far more likely to contract HIV from patients than patients will from unclean dental instruments. The illustrations by the television media of possible ways of transmission of the virus were so unlike what most dentists do in their practices as to make them ludicrous. I am sure that somewhere in the world could be found a dentist who did some of the things that were portrayed but it would be a great exception rather than the common practice. Again the FDA found that dental offices were not a ready source of HIV dissemination. That resolution was never really made public by the mainstream media and the furor just slipped into oblivion. The amalgam matter has suffered a similar fate. Amalgam, which is basically a combination of mercury, tin and zinc has been used as a filling material for over a hundred years and had never been associated with systemic illness as a sequel to its use. It is believed that some patients may have an allergic response to the mercury but that is rare and has not resulted in grave illness. It was felt by many that as the use of composite (white) fillings was increasing, some thought that a way to get patients to remove old amalgams and replace them with the “new” white fillings was to scare them from using the old silver amalgam fillings by saying that they were dangerous to one’s health. While it is true that some mercury vapor is released over time during mastication, the amount
was no more than the ambient mercury that one would inhale in the atmosphere! So the question remains, are amalgam fillings still good dental restorations. The answer is, they most certainly are. These days, esthetics has become a selling point for dental care. Teeth are now being bleached whiter than they naturally appear in the mouth and restorations that appear more tooth colored are now in great demand. It is my view that extremely white teeth are not consistent with nature’s portfolio and are therefore more of an aberration than teeth that blend with the patient’s facial color. Nature rarely places very white teeth in a dark skinned face or dark teeth in a fair skinned face. Thus when you see that combination occurring it tends to draw attention to the contrast as unusual. The white fillings (composites) are now the rage but I am not convinced that they are more durable than the silver amalgams. Fir esthetic reasons, the restoration of anterior teeth calls for fillings that look like natural teeth and so it is understandable that patients prefer tooth colored fillings. Originally they were derived from silicates. Today those tooth colored fillings are called composites which are derived from resins. In the posterior teeth, however, where the brunt of heavy mastication and trituration occurs, it is questionable whether or not the composite fillings can withstand pounding and grinding of posterior tooth function. While my observations are empirical and thus not fully scientific, what seems to occur in composite filled posterior teeth is a failure of the material at the tooth composite interface where a process called ditching occurs and results in decay that often leads to root canal therapy. It seems as if a composite that is as durable as amalgam has not yet been produced. In amalgams, if minute fractures occur at the filling tooth interface, the material has an ionic interaction that tends to inhibit or deter decay. Composite fillings do not exhibit this quality and so recurrent decay appears more readily. Since esthetics is not as much as of a concern in posterior teeth, amalgam fillings are probably a better material to be used in the rear of the mouth. If you choose to have the posterior teeth filled using composite restorations, it behoves you to visit your dentist regularly to have them checked for fracture and ditching along the margins so that they can be repaired. Failure to do this will result in more recurrent decay than you will find in amalgams and the possibility of more extensive and expensive dental treatment.

Message from the Editor Greeting Brother of Mu Lambda, Another year is coming to an end. We have been working towards building a greater brotherhood. Focus on our community and demonstrating what it means to be an ALPHA. I’m very proud of our accomplishments this year and what we have achieved over these twelve months. We have genuinely been Servants of All in 2019. In just my first year of being in this chapter, I have seen the difference since January, and from where I’m sitting, We’re looking good and doing an excellent job. We need more participation from all brothers, and although we have been limited at times with help, it has not stopped the ALPHA train from rolling. BRO. KENNETH A. Esprit de Fraternite Brothers, It is that time of year again. The fraternity’s fraternal year runs January 1st to December 31st. Mu Lambda’s 2019-2020 fraternal year runs September 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. The chapter does not meet during July and August. It is now time to pay your 2019-2020 dues which will cover you from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. You chapter dues and grand tax, if you are not a life member, are due before November 15, 2019, or a late fee will be applied. Ways to make payment: 1. You can pay your dues on mulambda.org by clicking the dues tab at the bottom left of every web page. 2. Bring a check to the chapter meeting. 3. An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
