Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land! And so I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

MU LAMBDA CHAPTE

The President’s Message February is Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the role of African Americans in United States history. It is a time for us to recognize the achievements of those who laid the groundwork for some of our current privileges. Many of the younger brothers might not remember when African Americans were not allowed to use the restroom of choice, enter the front door of public establishments, vote without a literacy test, or just sip cold water from certain fountains. There was a time when African American football players were allowed to play every position except quarterback. Mu Lambda will be celebrating 97 years on October 1, 2020 and 100 years on October 1, 2023. Brothers Colin Campbell, Mikael LaRoche, and John Mabry are working with the fraternity’s national historian, Brother Robert Harris, to ensure Mu Lambda remains a part of African American history. I am honored and privileged to serve as Mu Lambda’s president. Mu Lambda is a humble chapter. When you enter the house, you cannot distinguish between a doctor, lawyer, engineer, executive, millionaire, security guard or Uber driver. On any given day, you can see a brother with multiple franchises serving as the Sergeant of Arms, a Starbucks executive trimming the trees, or an Ambassador sitting back telling a joke. All brothers are equal in Mu Lambda. The only title used in Mu Lambda is “Brother.” January was an emotional month with plenty of ups and downs. We witnessed Lebron James pass Kobe Bryant on the all-time scoring list one night and wake up the next day to news that Kobe Bryant, his daughter and eight others had perished in a helicopter accident. February ushered in the era of an African American quarterback winning another Superbowl. Mu Lambda is an alumni chapter filled with enormous talent. It is incumbent upon us to use that talent to the fullest and remember the difference between our college days and our alumni days. It is our job to educate our community about the importance of voting, college, finances, family responsibility, and that Black Lives do matter.

Parliamentarian Byron L. Williams

I look forward to seeing each and everyone of you at the February chapter meeting where we will cast ballots for the Associate Editor of the Sphinx and the Eastern Region Convention delegates.

I hope that you are all well and in good health. January 2020 came and left with a vengeance. So much occurred in one month that it almost became overwhelming. Some good, some not so good, but all worth giving thought towards the future. I would like to begin by again thanking the brothers for their continued support and work put in each month at the House of Ruth. Brothers also came out to the MLK march where we walked with our partner, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and were treated to a great lunch and fellowship afterwards. Although there have been somber moments in the month of January, the loss of Kobe Bryant and his daughter along with lives of 7 other passengers, the loss of Mrs. Brice, Brother Julius Brice’s wife, the Coronavirus that seems to be spreading in the country with 8 known cases, Mu Lambda remains steadfast in our work in the community. Not forgetting those that have gone on to their eternal place of rest, but thankful for those we still have here with us! As we continue to stay committed to hosting events (i.e. fundraiser, community services, etc.) keep in mind that there have been many changes to the fraternity’s insurance policy. As a result it affects how and when we need to submit Event Checklist forms to obtain the insurance certificate needed to host events. Numerous communications have been sent out via email discussing the changes. Please make sure you review the changes and let me know if you have any questions. I’m aware of the extra work that this may cause, but better safe than sorry. The sooner you are ahead of gathering all the necessary documentation for your event, the more time you will have to successfully submit and obtain the insurance certificate. Now, we’re off to the month of February. Let us enter into this month remembering those that came before us paving the way so that we may be here today. Salute Black History month and the movers and shakers that made it happen and continue to do so! ‘06 Brother Garrett Miller Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Message from the Membership and Reclamation Chair Greeting Brothers, Brother President has charged me with reclaiming a minimum of 50 brothers this fraternal year. The ask is not insurmountable because numerous brothers stated during the convention their intention of returning to the chapter. I cannot do it alone; I would like all brothers to assist me. It is not just about getting brothers back into the fold – we have some challenging days ahead of Alpha and the African-American community. The more brothers we have helping, the more work we can do in the community. Fraternally, Brother Timothy Fitzgerald, Membership and Reclamation Committee Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Brother Richardson is a 1972 GU college graduate and a 1975 law school graduate. He worked part and full-time at GU in the Upward Bound and Community Scholars Programs. He established and directed GU’s first Affirmative Action Program. In that position, he became the first person of color to have an office in the Healy Building, named after Father Patrick Healy, the black president of the University from 1874-1882.

Sheet Pan Chicken Fajitas

Ingredients: • 1 tablespoon chili powder • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 pound baby bell peppers (12 to 15 peppers), halved, stemmed and seeded • 1 large yellow onion, halved and thinly sliced • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast • Juice of 1 lime, plus lime wedges, for serving • 8 fajita-size flour tortillas, warmed • Shredded Monterey Jack cheese, guacamole, hot sauce, salsa and sour cream, for serving Directions: 1. Preheat the broiler to high. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil. 2. Combine the chili powder, 2 teaspoons salt and 1 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl. Put the peppers and onions on the prepared baking sheet, drizzle with 1 tablespoon of the oil and season with half the chili powder mixture. Broil until softened and starting to char, about 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, cut the chicken into 1/4-inch-thick slices and toss in a large bowl with the remaining chile powder mixture and 1 tablespoon oil. 4. After the peppers are softened and starting to char, about 10 minutes, scatter the chicken on top of the peppers and onions and return the baking sheet to the broiler until the chicken is cooked through and starting to brown, about 5 minutes more. Drizzle with the lime juice. 5. Serve with the warmed tortillas, Monterey Jack cheese, guacamole, hot sauce, salsa, sour cream and lime wedges. Stir cream cheese, 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, lemon juice, vanilla extract, and nutmeg in a bowl until filling is smooth. 6. Punch down dough and turn out onto a lightly floured piece of parchment paper. Roll dough into a 10x28-inch rectangle. Spread cream cheese filling over the rectangle, leaving a 1-inch border along each edge. Lift an edge of the parchment paper sheet to roll dough into a log shape, starting at a 28-inch edge. Pinch seams closed to seal in filling, keeping roll on the parchment paper. 7. Wrap the filled dough around the outside of the buttered 8-inch cake pan to form the dough into a ring; pinch the edges closed. Use parchment paper to lift the cake and cake pan and slide a baking sheet beneath the parchment. Gently free cake pan, leaving the ringshaped cake. Whisk 1 egg with water in a small bowl; brush cake with egg wash. 8. Bake king cake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 40 minutes. Let cake cool. 9. Stir 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, corn syrup, and milk in a bowl; mix in 1 teaspoon lemon juice, or amount needed to thin icing to a thick but slightly runny texture. Drizzle king cake with icing. Mix 4 cups of flour, white sugar, yeast, and salt together in the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook. 1. Whisk 3 eggs in a separate bowl. Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat and whisk buttermilk into melted butter; heat until an instant-read thermometer reads 120 degrees F (49 degrees C). Whisk buttermilk mixture into beaten eggs and cool the mixture to 110 degrees F (43 degrees C). 2. Beat egg mixture into flour mixture on medium-low speed to make a firm, elastic dough, about 10 minutes. If dough doesn’t separate from the sides of the mixing bowl during kneading, beat in 1/4 cup more flour. 3. Turn dough out onto a work surface and knead for 1 minute; form into a ball and place into a buttered bowl, turning dough around to lightly coat with butter. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 2 hours.

Alphaman and Tuskegee Airman Charles McGee, 100, honored and promoted to Brigadier General

Charles McGee has had a historic week. On Sunday, McGee, who at 100 is one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, brought out the commemorative coin for the Super Bowl coin flip, handing it off to NFL referee Bill Vinovich. On Tuesday, President Trump honored McGee during the 2020 State of the Union address, announcing he was being promoted to Brigadier General. McGee was joined at the State of the Union by his great-grandson, Iain Lanphier from Scottsdale, Arizona. Lanphier hopes to follow in his great-grandfather’s footsteps, aiming to attend the the Air Force Academy and eventually going to space. Last summer, he was the top graduate of the Aerospace Career Education program sponsored by the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals and supported by the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. McGee flew 136 combat missions in World War II as part of the Tuskegee Airmen, attacking targets in Italy and supporting the rescue of 1,000 prisoners of war in Romania. He went on to become a Colonel, flying during wartime in Korea and Vietnam. McGee trained in Tuskegee, Alabama, to join only the African-American pilot squadron in World War II. Some 996 pilots trained as part of the squadron, 84 of whom lost their lives in the war.

The Foundation has donated over $310,000 in scholarships over the past 20 years. The Henry Arthur Callis Academy is conducted at Frank Ballou Senior High School in Washington, DC. Meeting monthly with up to 20 students, the Foundation members and Ballou staff address college preparedness, mentoring, job shadowing, college visits and social interactions. The Foundation has a five-year strategic plan that will create opportunities to positively impact rates of success of local African American male youth along their trajectory from positive academic and social experiences in middle and high school, high school graduation, college entrance, and college completion. When executed, our strategic plan will provide a full range of Academy experiences and activities for African American young men in grades 9 - 12.

Message from the House of Ruth Committee Greetings Brothers, Brothers Timothy Fitzgerald, LeRoy Lowery, Eddie Neal, Kenneth Williams, and I served the ladies of the House of Ruth on Saturday, January 11th. The January menu was fish, chicken, green beans, corn, potato salad, biscuits, chocolate cake, water, and sweet tea. The ladies were also provided individual roses. If you have never attended, please show at least once. It warms my heart every time I go. The women are truly appreciative of the meals. They talked to us more in January than any time since we have been serving meals. The staff indicated the women are wearing the robes every morning they leave their bedroom. We have renewed our partnership to serve the ladies again in 2020. Brothers voted for the chapter to sponsor the dinners during the odd months (March 7th, May 2nd, July 11th, September 5th, and November 7th). Teams of brothers will sponsor the even months February 1st - Jason Jefferson’s team, April 11th - Andre Lucas team, June 6th - Frank King’s team, August 1st - Tony Wilson’s team, October 10th - Tim Fitzgerald’s team, and December 6th - Alvin Reave’s team. Jason Jefferson’s team will be preparing a hot nutrition packed meal on Saturday, February 1st. If you are able to attend and serve the dish, we arrive at 3:30 to set the table and serve dinner promptly at 4:30 pm. Fraternally, Brother Garrett Miller Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

Esprit de Fraternite Brothers, It is that time of year again. The fraternity’s fraternal year runs January 1st to December 31st. Mu Lambda’s 2019-2020 fraternal year runs September 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020. The chapter does not meet during July and August. It is now time to pay your 2019-2020 dues which will cover you from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. You chapter dues and grand tax, if you are not a life member, are due before November 15, 2019, or a late fee will be applied. Ways to make payment: 1. You can pay your dues on mulambda.org by clicking the dues tab at the bottom left of every web page. 2. Bring a check to the chapter meeting. 3. Mail it to: Financial Team Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
