The Presidents’ Message Greetings brothers, We have accomplished so many things this fraternal year that I don’t know where to start. I guess I should start by thanking you. Nothing we have accomplished this year would have been possible without you. I appreciate my outgoing vice president, Brother Mikael LaRoche. He steadied the ship and allowed me an opportunity to service you and the community. Our executive board is the best board a president could have. I saw brothers putting chapter over their personal ambition. I welcome and look forward to working with the new Executive Board. I know they are going to do great things and carry the chapter to new heights. I lost two dear friends, Soror Janette and Brother Rudolph “Rudy” Harris. They were two of my greatest supporters. When someone did anything untoward me, Soror Harris was the first to express her dismay. During the charter day ceremony at Howard University Law School, Rudy said, “Eddie I love you, appreciate you and remember you can’t do it all.” I love our senior brothers. Mu Lambda senior brothers have been a part of my life for more than a quarter century. They have always been brutally honest and caring. I recall my first Mu Lambda meeting – those older brothers sat at the front of the Blackburn Center cafeteria running the meeting in their ornery fashion. It allowed me an opportunity to sit, observe and learn. Mu Lambda has allowed me to blossom. I joined Alpha because I thought it would allow me to work with like minded men who want to serve our community. I figured I could accomplish more as a group than as an individual. Mu Lambda taught me a lot; my brothers became my family. Mu Lambda allowed me to interact with brothers 38 years my junior and 40 years my senior, learning from all. There is a leader for every season. I studied each president before me (C.C. Jones, Vincent Orange, Melvin White, LeRoy Lowery, James Haynes, Rudolph Harris, Edwin Norwood, James McDonald, Timothy Fitzgerald, Kwame Ulmer, and Joel Grey), borrowing their strengths. Each had a servant’s heart, tough skin, quick to praise and slow to criticize. Fraternally, Brother Eddie Neal, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

MU LAMBDA CHAPTER
The Vice Presidents’ Message Greetings Brothers, VP & ERC Report The brother’s of MuLambda were joined by neighboring brothers on a journey North of Washington DC to the Capital of New York City - Albany for what was carded to be a spectacular weekend of brotherly fellowship, business meetings and a powerful meeting of Alpha East’s minds as we take care of the business of the fraternity. Unfortunately, I was unable to ride the bus to Albany because I took my wife, mother and then 3 week old son along with me for the journey. I was as committed to this experience and gave my son and family an opportunity to see what ALPHA excellence and sacrifice should resemble. On the footsteps of where our beloved ALPHA was founded and incorporated over 1500 brothers from Alpha East packed into the Hilton to exchange greetings and depart friends. I met brothers from Nu Lambda, Spoke directly to 5 of the presidential candidates, shook hands with the General President and Historian, attended some of the break out sessions but did not get any social functions in during the trip as I retreated to my responsibilities at the end of every evening. Unfortunately, it is sad to say a bad taste was left in the mouths of many patrons of the ERC2019. Literally the Hotel and Food were topics of discussion! - The hotel was large enough to host the convention and the staff who worked and altered each room for sessions and meetings were diligent in their efforts but all that was thwarted by the effects of two working elevators, One bartender, and meals that left each brother in slight disbelief. It was a trip that made a few eyebrows raise and begs for clear explanations on what happened and why! Reports - The conversation about insurance and the last leg continues to be a pervasive note in the region from the Executive leadership. Parties, Underground Pledging and general Liability continues to catapult the organization into a forecasted demise. A series of deaths and suits have pushed the premiums of the fraternity’s insurance upward annually and eventually will cost the organization millions annually to maintain coverage. There were proposals set forth on the floor by the Comptroller for raising the cost of annual membership for each brother, those affiliated with a chapter and more for those not active in a chapter to cover the burden of this load. In part, the proposal included annual taxation to Life Members and also a presented structure that would charge chapters’ based on their size. The fiscal year for the fraternity was in the black despite of the clouded report around grand tax increase proposals. The fraternity’s assets and investments are growing. The General President, Brother Everett Ward and Past GP Brother Tillman joined the convention with grand pomp and circumstance! After being met with a lofty round of applause, I listened carefully to brother Wards address to the east and truly commend him for taking time to say farewell to our late brother Harris before making his way up to Albany to greet us. Brother Harris’ legacy was praised and his value felt. I attended three break out sessions but would like to speak to the session on branding. It was a great opportunity to interact with the brothers who are responsible for the Sphinx Magazine, Website and some of the other assets of the organization. The most important take a way I got from the session is that we all represent the Best and Worst of Alpha. How we talk to each other, what we wear, how we speak to women, how we lead, our support or lack their of for onean-other, are all tailored into the seams of the ALPHA brand! Everything we do 8

Vice Presidents’ Message continued should be with a directive of Excellence especially when no one is looking. The goodwill in the Alpha Brand comes from how everyone outside of us perceives what we do/how we do it. It was a great food for thought as I went into other large business meetings, - What is the BRAND of Mu Lambda and do our own actions, conversations etc. hurt or help us? Presidential Race - The race for General President of Alpha looks as deep and scattered as the Democratic race for US President 2020. A divided playing field with a series of options, Slightly confusing at the end of the day, but the Brothers sat and listened keenly to each candidate individually as they debated and spoke of their platforms. Fortunately for Mu Lambda, we have been blessed by the opportunity to interact with three candidates. And the delegates were given a secondary face to face conversation with one candidate who has taken his time to address concerns, speak with the chapter and learn more about how to move the needle in his bid for presidency. There are stand outs in this race. Brother’s Smoothers and Parks primarily but the question still stands - Do we want the same or is Alpha and its future president invested in changing the organization for the better! A smooth selling Brother Roderick Smothers spoke of the millions he raised as a college president, but has not addressed why he has not raised funds for the organization he wants to lead. Brother Parks makes mention of change and not being a part of the past leadership systems, has an answer for every situation you seem to throw at him but still has not been effective a candidate in forum. He hasn’t quite projected himself or a strong/personable personality into a race that can be won simply because “brothers like how you speak or how you said what you said”. The presidency is an important role, and dedicates a direction for the Fraternity and its affiliates in the future. It is an interesting race. But there is more to hear and see in Las Vegas! MAAC meeting - Nothing concerning the matters of DC Alpha’s were addressed. To my dismay and disappointment, the consortium for brothers to sit and discuss matters of the MAAC was spent in majority dispelling a conversation about a brother who is repaying a debt to the Eastern Region and seeking reinstatement after (what seems to be 20 years have passed). A Former member of Mu Lambda, OLA & OO initiate, it seems like a matter that touched close to home. My take on this is that the facts needed to be clearly presented if this is going to be determined by a room of brothers (many of whom had NO CLUE what they were talking about) and an ultimatum be decided upon based only on what was Agreed upon! Changes to the rule and agreements create crevices for small problems to become cancerous. We are men of integrity - and should lead, and abide by a code of conduct and rules that govern our movements and conduct. The business relationship between the chapters in Washington DC remains strained and looks like a can that will continue to be kicked down the road. In conclusion - The ERC was a great learning experience! From great fellowship, long laughs and lasting friendshipsit was positive to learn more about the ranks of ALPHA and how its business is conducted. I am grateful for the time and opportunity I have had to serve Mu Lambda and Washington DC! I hope my work continues to inspire younger Alpha men to step to the plate and give All of their Peace, Love and Happiness to ALPHA. Until I have an opportunity to address you all again! Message from the Sergeant At Arms
Message from the Communications Team
Greetings Brothers,
Brothers,
The Sergeant at Arms’ team has implemented some minor changes.
Mu Lambda communicates with you by various methods:
1. We have to ensure the house is secure at all times. 2. We ordered walkie talkies for the Sergeant at Arms team so we can stay in constant communication. 3. We will have someone on the door of the meeting room so no one enters without signing in and all visitors show their pass card or we verify their information. 4. There are four doors to the house. The upper front, kitchen, rear meeting room and side meeting room. We will lock the front and kitchen doors once the meeting starts. We are down stairs and can’t hear. Someone can walk in and do anything without our knowledge. If someone needs entry after the meeting starts, they can come to the side door and knock. 5. Once the meeting starts, all brothers must use the rap of admission and password to enter the meeting room. If they don’t know the password, we will leave them outside the room, verify they are a brother and then have someone teach them the rap and password. 6. No sitting on the counter tops. All brothers should be seated in chairs. Brothers will identity empty seats and everyone takes a seat. 7. The Sgt at Arms will be positioned at the back of the room near the door. 8. A financial roster will be available to expedite things. Brothers on that roster just need to verify their information and initial. Visitors and brothers who are not financial will sign on a different sheet. 9. Every Mu Lambda brother should be familiar with the official challenge. If a brother we don’t know comes to the meeting, we will challenge the brother. Not to embarrass him, but to get him accustom to the official challenge. We will still check the brother’s passcard and look him up in AlphaNet. 10. We also need to keep the kitchen clear. Brothers will be asked to fix their drinks and migrate out of the kitchen so others can come and go. It will also help to get the food out in a timely manner. 11. We will periodically challenge Mu Lambda brothers we know. We need to get accustomed to it. 12. Brother Bell will repeat the challenge, password and rap of admission at every meeting for the remainder of the fraternal year. 13. If you have invited a brother to the meeting, notify me in advance so I can verify his official membership prior to the meeting and expedite things. 14. Mu Lambda’s official meeting attire is business casual.

America has been dealing with some stressful times. Alpha Phi Alpha is not immune to problems plaguing others. We are trying to make a concerted effort to keep you apprised of what is happening in Alpha and Mu Lambda. Every brother receives a call on the first and the 15th of the month. Your caller ID might show the call coming from 410.202.2715. That is the number associated with our system. The recorder will ask two questions – Brother if you and your family are fine, press “1.” If you or your family would like someone from Mu Lambda to call you, press “2’. If you elect to receive a call, the call will be returned by Mu Lambda’s Chaplain or a member of the Brother’s Keeper Committee. We recognize that most of you are fine, but sometimes we go through things in life and just want to know someone cares. This is Mu Lambda’s way of checking on you a minimum of twice a month. Will see you at the chapter meeting, but we want to make sure things are okay before and after the meeting. If you are not receiving chapter emails, please let me know. We assume all financial brothers are receiving the communication. Fraternally, Brother Garrett Miller Communications Team Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Message from the House of Ruth Committee Greetings Brothers, Brothers Sam Armstrong, Jason Clark, Joseph Gibbs, LeRoy Lowery, Garrett Miller, Eddie Neal, Jeremy Triplett, John-Mark Williams, Kenneth Williams, and Alpha Wives (Danielle Grey, Modestine Lowery, Bonnie Seabron, Helena Valentine, and Tiara Williams) served the ladies at the House of Ruth an excellent Mother’s Day meal to be remembered on Saturday, May 11th. We arrived at 3:30 pm to set the table and deliver the meal promptly at the scheduled time of 4:30 pm. We served the ladies turkey, dressing, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, collard greens mixed with cabbage, upside down cake, freshly made ice tea and ice cream sundaes. Each lady was also allowed to select the customary yellow rose of her choosing. Brothers had an opportunity to mingle with the ladies. Again, we do not know the story behind any individual woman, but they each expressed their appreciation to the brothers of Mu Lambda. The brothers provided the women the finest of service. The brothers walked the room allowing the ladies to select their rose of choice while offering a friendly smile. In addition to the May 11th dinner, Saturday, May 18th, Mu Lambda’s Health and Wellness committee donated fresh fruit (apples and oranges), breakfast bars, coffee and coconut water from its health and fitness event. We will be serving the ladies again Saturday, June 1st. We will arrive on site at 3:30 and serve dinner promptly at 4:30 pm. They have requested an outdoor meal served on the grill. The tentative menu is hotdogs, hamburgers (beef and turkey), sausages, sausage, tossed salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, juice, ginger ale, ice tea, and ice cream sundaes. Because it is the beginning of the summer’s Day weekend and thanks to Brother Ryle Bell, we will have the presence of the East State Jazz Band to serenade the ladies. We are looking for meals for July and August. Brothers, if you can cook, the ladies would appreciate your favorite dish. If you are unable to attend and serve the dish, arrangements will be made to serve the dish. Fraternally, Brother Garrett Miller Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter JUNE 2019

Congratulation!!!!! Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda. We raised more than $4200 for March for Babies.
Facts and Did you know? March of Dimes Mission Prematurity is the #1 killer of babies in the United States. We are working to change that and help more moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. From polio to prematurity the March of Dimes has focused on researching the problems that threaten our children and finding ways to prevent them. • •
Over 380, 000 babies are born premature each year. Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the March of Dimes to initially defeat Polio. • Women of color are up to 50% likely to give birth prematurely than other races. For the last 17 years, I have been involved with March

for Babies. I have seen and heard stories from families, friends, colleagues, and people around the world’s quest for healthy childbirth. Every story is different. If you listen to your network, there is someone that you know that was affected by premature birth, newborn death, or health problems. Some of these issues have touched my family personally. Within my immediate family, three women had stillborn births. I have a nephew and niece who were born prematurely, and happy to say they both are healthy and thriving today. My nephew was born with a heart defect, and within minutes, he was medevac to the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore for emergency heart surgery. Today my nephew is living a great life with yearly checkups with his doctor. Brother Samuel I Armstrong March For Babies Committee Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Adopt-A-Block
Keeping our city clean and green Residents, businesses, and the government all play a role in keeping DC clean, safe, and healthy. Only by involving all residents and each community can we create a District as beautiful as we know it can be. Success begins with one neighbor and one community deciding to make a difference. Anyone can participate: individuals, families, churches, businesses, schools and other groups and organizations.
Adopting a block in the District of Columbia has many benefits:
Martin Luther King, Jr Avenue and Howard Road SE
• Improved quality of life in your neighborhood. The appearance of our community contributes to the quality of life we all share. • Signs with your group's name letting people know you are committed to making a difference. • Meet your neighbors, strengthen your community connections, and build leadership skills. Become a role model to youth. • Litter-free, more active communities help discourage rodents and unwanted and illegal activity. • Increased economic development. An attractive, clean community is a great asset in attracting new businesses, jobs, and customers. First Street and Bryant Street NW JUNE 2019

LONDON DRY GIN STRONG MARTINI It’s June, the month of the quintessential aperitif Alpha Phi Alpha cocktail — the London dry gin strong Martini — served ICE COLD.
We topped our tuna steaks with a beautifully bright and flavorful mangoavocado salsa that is delicious on it’s own, but really shines when piled high on top of the spicy tuna.
INGREDIENTS FOR THE MANGO AVOCADO SALSA: • 1 scallion, thinly sliced into rounds • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice • 1 ripe ataulfo (champagne) mango, cut into small chunks • 1 ripe haas avocado, cut into small chunks • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro • Sea salt, to taste • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

INGREDIENTS • 1 quart strawberries, sliced • 1/2 cup white sugar • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup white sugar • 4 teaspoons baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 pinch ground nutmeg • 1/2 cup butter • 1/2 cup milk • 2 eggs, separated 1/4 cup white sugar • 2 cups sweetened whipped cream • 3 sprigs fresh mint (optional) • Add all ingredients to list DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Lightly grease two 9-inch round cake pans. 2. Gently stir strawberries and 1/2 cup sugar in a bowl; chill. 3. Combine flour, 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg in a bowl; cut in butter with a knife or pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Whisk milk and egg yolks in a bowl, then stir into flour mixture until just moistened. Divide in half and pat into prepared cake pans. 4. Beat egg whites until foamy in a large bowl. Continuing to beat until stiff peaks form. Lift your beater or whisk straight up: the egg whites should form a sharp peak that holds its shape. Spread over dough; sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar. 5. Bake in preheated oven until golden, 40 to 45 minutes. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pan to wire rack; cool completely. 6. Place one cake layer on a large serving plate; spread with half the whipped cream, spoon half the strawberries over cream. Repeat layers; garnish with mint. Brother Garrett Miller
Much debate rages over the base liquor - vodka or gin, shaken with both gin and vodka as with James Bond’s Vesper or garnished dirty (with olive brine like Teddy Roosevelt preferred), straight up (olives) or with a twist of lemon peel or as I prefer pickled watermelon rind. This two ingredient sophisticated cocktail is more about temperature and finesse than complicated preparation. The Classic Martini, in my humble opinion, is ALWAYS served in a cocktail glass, ALWAYS London dry gin and like an Alpha Man NEVER shaken — rather stirred with aplomb in a cocktail pitcher. Cocktails should only be shaken if they contain fruit juice that require emulsification with the base liquor. The Classic Martini
3 ounces (pony + jigger) Beefeater London Dry Gin 1/2 Ounce Dolin Dry Vermouth Stir the gin and dry vermouth over plenty of ice in a martini pitcher 3 minutes until thoroughly chilled. Decant into a cocktail glass and garnish with two olives pierced on a pick. The perfect Martini is strong, dry, and features herbal notes from the gin and dry vermouth. Enjoy the olives with the last sip. Serve with crudités, cheese and crackers before stimulating conversation. Cheers Brothers, Brother Drew Love

Message from the Brother’s Keeper Program Greetings Brothers, The Brother’s Keeper Program is a service program developed with the mission of advocating for and improving the quality of life for disabled, mature and ailing Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated brother’s, their spouses, widows, and community members. Goals of the Chapter Brother’s Keeper Program: The goal of the Chapter Brother’s Keeper Program is to promote dignity and independence among retired and mature brothers, spouses, and widows. Program Objectives: Our objectives for the Chapter Brother’s Keeper Program will be to ASSIST, PROVIDE, and ENSURE the following seven areas of concern to the Brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and their members: 1. Assist in maintaining living environments that are compatible with program participants’ level of functioning. 2. Assist with property maintenance. 3. Assist with health care decision making. 4. Provide companionship. 5. Provide legal services. 6. Provide transportation. 7. Ensure adequate supplies of food, water, shelter, and clothing, with special emphasis on disaster management and recovery. Criteria for Inclusion: Include a brother and/or his spouse who are 60 or older, retired, and/or having a chronic health problem and insufficient resources (e.g., money, family, social support system) to meet basic needs. Mu Lambda initiated a five-tier approach to enhance the Brother’s Keeper program First tier – Communications: the Membership and Reclamation Committee mailed Approximately 300 letters in January to brothers to check on their well-being. The Communications Team started an automated calling system to reach out to the brothers, spouses, and widows to identify anyone who needs assistance. Second tier – Training: The Chapter Brother’s Keeper Program is based on seven important JUNE 2019
initiatives in order to properly facilitate the program in accordance with the National guidelines. Our goal for the program is to have formal training in each of the seven areas of concern, in order to have a more robust and cohesive program. Third tier – Collaboration/Volunteerism: Collaboration/Volunteerism is the heart of the Chapter Brother Keeper’s Program. As a chapter we must continue to seek ways to reach out to the brother’s, their spouse, and widows to help identify any of the program seven areas of concern. Collaboration begins in our own house; this is where we reach out to different auxiliary such the Alpha Wives, Health agencies, etc. Volunteerism is the key to having a successful program, we are asking all brother’s throughout the Chapter to consider being a part of the Chapter Brother’s Keeper Program Committee. Fourth tier – Companionship: The Chapter Brother’s Keeper Committee is currently developing a combined list of brothers throughout the Chapter who are 60 years or older. The goal for this tier, is to assign those volunteer brothers on the Brother Keepers Committee a certain number of brothers from the list of 60 year or older to help generate information and companion for the brother, spouse, and widows in the program. Fifth Tier- Event Planning: The Chapter Brother’s Keeper Committee believes in generating events for all ages, our main concern however is to generate social gathering and events to help generate the brotherhood and companion that Brother A. Charles Haston spoke about during the conception of this program. This involves reaching out and connecting with our senior brothers, their spouse, and widows by having social events and gathering that caters to their social environment. If you are a brother in need or know a brother in need, call 410.202.2715 or 313.573.3649. Brother Carlos DeBose Brothers Keeper Committe Chair Alpha phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Call (410.202.2715) or email eneal@mulambdafoundation.org. Every brother is entitled to an Omega service, financial or not. The request should come from the family, not the chapter forcing it upon the family. Part of any brother’s estate planning should be the designation of an Alpha brother to receive his paraphernalia or instructions for his loved ones to contact Mu Lambda for disposition. Official fraternity pins (e.g., official badge, life member pin, twenty-five-year pin, fifty-year pin, etc.) should be given to another brother, the chapter (Mu Lambda) or the General Organization to prevent it from getting into the hands of a nonmember. Notify your family to give Mu Lambda and fraternal documents to Mu Lambda.
I hope you never need the above information, just in case, please share the information with your family so we can honor you in the event of your untimely passing. Fraternally, Brother William A. (Tony) Hawkins Chaplain Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

A Legacy of Safety Starts with Students – NSC Honors Dr. Marvin DeMond Mills Sr. during Black History Month. When it comes to safety, everyone deserves to have a safe place to live, work and play. But in reality, some groups face disproportionately higher risks, either because they work in more dangerous environments or because they lack access to safe living conditions. One way we can address the inequality in safety is to make sure we seek out diverse expertise when it comes to the safety profession. THE EAST STATE JAZZ BAND The East State Jazz band comprises entirely of brothers from the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity who reside in the Washington, DC , metropolitan area. 2017, IUL brother Darryl Parker, a Delta Kappa chapter initiate was added to the group’s percussion section. In 2019, Brother Emerson departed the band to pursue a personal musical career and Brother James Huntley returned as the keyboard player. At present, the ninepiece ensemble specializes in playing the music of the jazz greats such as Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Brother Duke Ellington, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock and others. The band has also extended its repertoire to include jazz renditions of James Brown’s music, as well as other R&B/Soul artists.
Brother Ryle Bell, a saxophone player and a chapter’s representative to the Founder’s Day Breakfast Committee volunteered to acquire the talent to fulfill this request. Despite a rather short lead time, he contacted keyboardist and fellow Omicron Eta Lambda brother Milton Costen, and with Bro. Bell on alto saxophone they decided to perform for the occasion. On the morning of the breakfast, another Alpha Brother, Everett Martin, a Gamma Iota initiate and member of the Omicron Lambda chapter and trumpet player, asked to participate with Brothers Bell and Costen after remembering that he had his instrument in the trunk of his car. His offer was accepted and the three brothers provided the entertainment for that occasion. Mu Lambda chapter and alto/baritone saxophonist Brother James Heck, IV, who was present at the breakfast, indicated an interest in joining the group after the performance and was accepted. He became the fourth brother to join the group. With the addition of Brother Heck, Brother Bell switched to playing the tenor saxophone. After that performance, several other DC area Brothers attending the breakfast, indicated their interest in joining the group and they began to meet and rehearse formally. By 2013, the group would add drummer/percussionist John Harris III, an Eta Zeta initiate affiliated with Iota Upsilon Lambda Chapter of Silver Spring, MD, his fellow IUL brother and alto saxophonist Eric Elmore (Alpha Chapter), electric bass player and member-at-large Brother Harry Jackson, III (Gamma Sigma), OHL Brother and keyboardist James Huntley, (who replaced Brother Costen due to outside obligations) and trumpeter Brother Charles Hines, Jr. of Pi Upsilon Lambda, Prince George’s County, MD. These additions rounded out the septet. In tribute to our fraternity’s meeting place at 411 East State Street, Ithaca, New York, the group named itself the “East State Jazz Band.” In early 2015 as obligations caused Brother Huntley (who Pastors a church in Prince George’s County) to step away from the band he was replaced on keyboards by Kappa Epsilon Lambda brother Anthony Emerson. The band was on its way and began performing regularly in the Washington DC metropolitan area. In

Message from the Editor Greetings Brothers, I hope this message finds each of you in good health, safe and filled with that Alpha spirit! As we prepare to break for the summer, I wanted to say thanks to every one of you who has been extremely brotherly to me as I work my way into this chapter. I appreciate the support as I try to bring to you a newsletter you can be proud of reading. This newsletter is work. Without certain brothers behind the scenes with me preparing a host of exciting topics and information, I couldn’t possibly get this newsletter done. It truely takes teamwork to make the dream work. BRO. KENNETH A. WILLIAMS EDITOR OF THE TORCH torch@mulambda.org ALPHA QUOTE TO SERVE BY... “THINK Alpha Phi Alpha, TALK Alpha Phi Alpha, PROMOTE Alpha Phi Alpha, and LABOR for the broad principles of idealism for which Alpha Phi Alpha was created, so that humanity shall look on us as a body worthwhile.” Brother Henry L. Dickason, 6th General President
In July, I will make my first General Convention as a brother of this chapter, and as you can see, we’re well represented. Although I am not a delegate, I intend on setting a positive example of who we are in Mu Lambda. Let make sure that the entire Fraternity knows that we are the standard and positive example needed, not only in our area, district or region but everywhere we go. In a moment (between June and August), it will be half-time. A time to break, clear our heads, spend that critical time with family or self and then hit it hard to finish out the year with a bang. ICE COLD to my SOUL...!

MU LAMBDA’S “BATTLE OF THE BROTHERS” FUNDS CHALLENGE
WE NEED YOUR HELP! Greetings Brothers, Welcome to the first Annual Mu Lambda “BATTLE OF THE BROTHERS FUNDS CHALLENGE!” On behalf of our Chapter President, we are excited about your participation in this event and look forward to crowning the winning team. In an effort to provide support, this brotherly competition will help raise funds for our Mu Lambda Foundation. Brothers will build teams embarking on a four-month challenge to raise a minimum goal of $5,000 per team. The team raising the most money will win the Funds Challenge Championship. Teams We will have twelve teams vying to be crowned “FUNDS CHALLENGE CHAMPION!” • • • • •
Each team will have a team captain, a max of ten brothers (including the team captain and bonus member), with a minimum of seven brothers. Each team will select a bonus team member from the Foundation and that member will be responsible for raising a minimum of $1,000. The $1,000 will count towards your team’s goal. Each member will be selected in order by the team captain. Team captains will select in the order determined by a lottery. Since this is about brotherhood, fundraising and fun, team captains can trade with another team captain.
Rules We must protect the chapter and foundation’s brand, so a set of rules will be established for the challenge. •
The only rule at this time is the fundraising must be legal and in good taste.
LET THE FUNDRAISING BEGIN! JUNE 2019
