MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

The President’s Message Brothers, To move forward, we must look back. I am revisiting the President’s message from the March 2019 Torch. The 2019 President’s message was a call to action. It was a somber message about the death of District of Columbia youth and Mu Lambda’s reclamation efforts. It is only fair that we evaluate those efforts. Mu Lambda had a very good reclamation year, brothers supported the programs, we had an excellent year with the women at the House of Ruth, and we earned a new partner, AIDS Healthcare Foundation. We pledged more support for our youth and expanded our resources to the Youth Court of the District of Columbia. I would like to digress for a moment to speak about Brother W. Jerome McGee who transitioned to Omega Chapter. Brother McGee was born in 1923, the same year Mu Lambda was chartered. He was a loyal and faithful member of Mu Lambda who designed the basement’s architectural drawings. He will be forever missed and I hope Mu Lambda brothers attend his Omega Service in record numbers. As we celebrated Black History Month, I spent one week attending dinners discussing the coronavirus’ impact on stocks falling quickly and the Dow facing the biggest weekly loss since 2008. I had dinner with the Associate Area Director, Michael Taylor, discussing brotherhood and effective partnerships in Alpha. I spent time with Mu Lambda Foundation’s president drafting a grant to fund the Youth Court of the District of Columbia. Last but not least, countless hours were spent discussing the fraternity’s 2020 insurance. We proposed legislation for a proclamation dedicating December 4th as Alpha Phi Alpha Day in the District of Columbia; designate 1st Street NW, starting at Bryant Street up to Michigan Avenue as Alpha Phi Alpha Way; and to designate Alpha Phi Alpha Day at the City Council each year. We delivered the Mu Lambda Chapter App. We have started the planning for several spectacular events – Congressional Black Caucus Reception; Golf tournament; Juneteenth; Crab feast; Men Who Cook; and our 97th Annual Gala. We just elected new leadership for the MAAC and will soon be electing a new General President but we should not lose focus of the upcoming election for who will lead our nation as the next president of the United States, House and Senate leaders, and our local politicians. Even more important is the 2020 census – we have to make sure we are counted. To ensure no brother is left in the dark, Mu Lambda will be having 2020 Census training at the house on Saturday, March 14th from 11 am to 2 pm. Please be in attendance.

I trust that you are well and healthy. The weather In D.C. has truly been unpredictable. One minute its winter-like and the next feeling almost like spring. The one thing that has been constant is the support from the brothers of Mu Lambda. The workload has not decreased, and brothers have been stepping up to assist where possible. Brother Jefferson and his team did an awesome job preparing and serving dinner to the women at the House of Ruth last month. This month, March 7, 2020 we will be serving the women once again. If you are available to help the chapter prepare food and/or serve the women, please reach out to me asap. As we continue the work of Alpha, please turn your attention to the chapter’s calendar of events listed in the Torch. We have many events listed on the calendar for 2020. I will do my best sending out reminders of upcoming events. With that said, all committee chairs please keep in mind that more is required on the Event Checklist to have events approved and to obtain insurance certificates. Plan early so that you can have ample time to complete the checklist and allow for review. With the new fraternity’s insurance policy, each day is another challenge, but we will prevail. In conclusion, as brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter, we continue to make great stride in the work we do out in the communities and with our partners. Let us build on those successes as we continue to make Mu Lambda stronger and better than ever.

Message from the Membership and Reclamation Chair Greeting Brothers, Brother President has charged me with reclaiming a minimum of 50 brothers this fraternal year. The ask is not insurmountable because numerous brothers stated during the convention their intention of returning to the chapter. I cannot do it alone; I would like all brothers to assist me. It is not just about getting brothers back into the fold – we have some challenging days ahead of Alpha and the African-American community. The more brothers we have helping, the more work we can do in the community. Fraternally, Brother Timothy Fitzgerald, Membership and Reclamation Committee Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

As Membership and Reclamation Chair of Mu Lambda Chapter, I would like to bring greetings to you and extend an invitation for you to return to the chapter. I am proud to be a member of this chapter as Mu Lambda celebrates 96 years of serving Washington, DC since 1923. Since our charter, Mu Lambda Chapter has been an innovator, a builder, and a molder of men making a difference in the lives of many in the Washington Metropolitan area. Mu Lambda Chapter is working diligently to ensure that our programs and social activities continue to impact the community in a positive way by being a catalyst of change. Today, Mu Lambda stands as a beacon of light to the community and a strong source of leadership. Through our Henry Arthur Callis Academy, we continue to facilitate the growth of young males so they understand that leadership is not a burden but a responsibility. Staying true to Alpha’s core: we implement successfully the fraternity’s National Programs: Go-to-High School Go-to-School, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Project Alpha and Brothers’ Keeper. These four programmatic efforts are implemented through “out-of-the-box” formats to ensure that Mu Lambda Chapter is reaching the target audience. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Message from the House of Ruth Committee Greetings Brothers, Jason Jefferson’s team prepared a hot nutrition packed meal on Saturday, February 1st. Brothers Karl Bruce, Jason Jefferson, Mark Jones, Kellen Moore, Eddie Neal, Jeremy Triplett, Byron L. Williams, John-Mark Williams, and I served the ladies of the House of Ruth. The February menu was furnished with a Valentine’s Day theme - chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, meat balls, rolls salad, biscuits, cup cakes, cookies, ice cream, water, soda, and sweet tea. The ladies were also provided individual red roses. If you have never attended, please show at least once. It warms my heart every time I go. The women are truly appreciative of the meals. The next session is Saturday, March 7th. Mu Lambda is also contemplating the idea of providing the ladies with a day at the hair salon – stay tuned. We have renewed our partnership to serve the ladies again in 2020. Brothers voted for the chapter to sponsor the dinners during the odd months (March 7th, May 2nd, July 11th, September 5th, and November 7th). Teams of brothers will sponsor the even months (April 11th (Andre Lucas’ team), June 6th (Frank King’s team), August 1st (Tony Wilson’s team), October 10th Tim Fitzgerald’s team), and December 6th (Alvin Reave’s team). Vision for Alpha Phi Alpha: “In 1936, Jewel Robert Harold Ogle stated “It is of vital importance that we seriously consider the contribution that every brother may make for the good of our Fraternity. Never were the demands for constructive effort and intelligent devotion as great as today. Never before was it as incumbent upon every member to restate loyalty and exemplify fraternal obligation by consistent life and unimpeachable character. But these must be reinforced by a growing consciousness of the responsibilities that Alpha Phi Alpha faces in the world today, where if ever the problems which beset us are to be solved by a way of deliverance discovered, it must be by the application of those principles upon which we were founded.” More: rodericksmothers.com

Brotherhood. Academic Excellence. Community Impact. Our Jewel Founders believed that each of these elements collectively invoke the “true spirit of fraternity.” Inspired by thirty-two years of service at the chapter, district, regional and general organization levels, and through my professional training and leadership in global corporations, my vision is that we excel on the principles on which Alpha Phi Alpha was founded, advance to be the fraternity of choice, and an intellectual hub, providing solutions to 21st century issues by answering the call to work as Servant-Leaders in our communities, remaining a beacon of hope to humanity.” More: elevatingthealphaspirit.com

THE BLACK HOUSE at Georgetown University Georgetown University President, Dr. John J. DeGioia Honors Senior Brother Robert Richardson as a Black House Leader at 50th Anniversary Dinner and Gala on February 24, 2020 Brother Richardson said, “I was honored, along with other student leaders, who lead the efforts to create a Black House at Georgetown University in the 1970’s.” The Black House History: Forty-years ago, a small group of Black Students (BSA) staged a protest in front of the University president’s office with three demands. First, they wanted to increase the percentage of minority students that were accepted into Georgetown. Secondly, they wanted the university to invest in creating a support system that monitored and tracked minorities that did enroll at the university. Finally, they urged the university to provide a space where Black students could congregate to socialize or talk about pertinent issues of the day. That space became the “Black House.” Today, the Black House remains one of the few dedicated places on campus where all students of color can gather to talk about issues, and meet one another. Black House residents are encouraged to design programs to promote, foster and acknowledge diversity and community on campus. Examples of programs include weekly Hour Glass discussions on topics relevant to the community, a voter registration program, a panel on the impact on the Latino Vote, a workshop on developing a selfbrand, and a dance workshop partnering with Groove Theory to name a few. Mission: To assess and meet the needs of students of color by implementing programs, events, and dialogue in a community-centered space. Vision: Fostering community for students of color. Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.

My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Esprit de Fraternite Brothers, It is that time of year again. The fraternity’s fraternal year runs January 1st to December 31st. It is now time to pay your 2019-2020 dues which will cover you from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. Mail it to: Financial Team Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter 2405 First Street, NW Washington, DC 20001

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit. MARCH 2020 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 46
