MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

The Presidents’ Message Brothers, If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go. Mu Lambda was chartered 96 years ago on Monday, October 1, 1923. Included in this issue of the Torch are pictures of Mu Lambda’s corporate headquarters before the construction and Mu Lambda’s 60th Anniversary founders’ day gala. A brother recently attending the chapter meeting stated he looked at Mu Lambda but could not afford the dues. I make no excuses for the dues which average $100 per year more than most chapters in the area. While we pay approximately $10 per meeting more than the average chapter, you have to put it in perspective and ask are we paying too little. Don’t fear, we are not raising your dues. Your dues support Mu Lambda’s $2,000,000 corporate headquarters, four course repast per meeting, one of the largest annual Congressional Black Caucus receptions in DC, backpacks for DC youth, helping our senior brothers, feeding battered women, clothing the homeless, feeding hungry families, and other far reaching community service projects. Don’t overlook the mentorship to our college brothers. While others are worried about saving $100 per year, we are building safe playgrounds for youth in DC. We are in the schools mentoring at risk middle and high school African-American males. We are working in wards 7 and 8 of the city. We are feeding battered women and clothing the homeless. We are on college campuses teaching self-defense to African-American young ladies. Mu Lambda was one of the only chapters offering financial assistance to brothers during the government shutdown. Mu Lambda is one of the only chapters preparing living health care initiatives for senior brothers. Mu Lambda was one of the first chapters to address mental illness in the fraternity. Dedicated Alphas like two of the Jewels saw fit to be charter members of Mu Lambda, while a third decided to be president of Mu Lambda chapter. Across Alpha when only 15 percent of brothers remain financial after four years of entering the fraternity, dedicated Alphas like Brother LeRoy Lowery, who has been with Mu Lambda for 37 years, are choosing to return to Mu Lambda year after year. The $100 is a metaphor. The real issue is that too often we count our years in Alpha and focus on the immaterial, rather than making our years in Alpha count by doing the work in the community. Thoroughly read this issue of the Torch – Mu Lambda has done more during the month of September than some organizations will do in a calendar year. My question to you, are you going to be like the visitor or are you going to pay your 2019-2020 dues so we can continue to serve the citizens of the District of Columbia. Most important, consider how the mere $100 helps Mu Lambda as it pursues the Youth Court in DC, helping to end the school to prison pipeline. In closing a representative of an organization with authorized capital of $184 billion recently approached Mu Lambda inquiring why we are not one of their partners. They recognized our work in the community. Then again, that’s what your extra $100 earned you. Fraternally, Brother Eddie Neal, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

I hope this message finds you in excellent health. The fall season is here, although the summer temperatures still linger. But we will not let that hold us back from doing the work of Alpha! I want to begin by thanking the brothers for coming out to the Park on 14th and supporting the annual CBC event. The turnout was amazing, and all had a great time in attendance. With the CBC behind us, we march onward to the next major event this month, the 96th Charter Day Luncheon, which will be held at Howard University School of Law on Oct. 5th at 1:06pm. Please look for notifications, calls, and emails that will be circulating. Brother Harmon is leading the Adopt the Block cleanup this Saturday, Sept 28th. A few chapter brothers and I will be heading the NYC for the Eastern Region Staff Meeting this coming weekend. Often I am reminded of a quote, “the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Give. Live. Love. Service.” Brothers, I realize we have a calendar that is packed with events each month. Please continue to come out and support the chairs and their committees as they continue to work hard to make these events successful. With that said, I’m still looking for a brother to chair the marketing/promotion committee. If you are interested in chairing this committee or looking to work on any of the other committees, please reach out to me. Along with several brothers, we had the opportunity to attend and be honored by the House of Ruth. As you know, we prepare meals for these women each month, and their organization thought enough of us to dedicate an award of appreciation. Consistently, the brothers received thanks for all the work that we were doing. We were also encouraged to continue the great job with the House of Ruth at the event. It was very touching to be appreciated by so many strangers that were familiar with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. but was not sure how we fit into the picture with the House of Ruth.

Nominating Frank King

While there, many other partners/supporters of the House of Ruth approached us individually to say thank you. I mentioned this because we also made lasting impressions with another supporter of the House of Ruth, The World Bank. They were so impressed that they asked why we were not on the World Bank’s list of 503c partners. From that conversation, the process has now begun, and hopefully, what will become a very profitable relationship for the chapter.

Programs Joseph Gibbs

So let us keep pushing and making lasting impressions in the communities we serve and continue to hold Alpha high! ‘06

Message from the Membership and Reclamation Chair Greeting Brothers, Brother President has charged me with reclaiming a minimum of 50 brothers this fraternal year. The ask is not insurmountable because numerous brothers stated during the convention their intention of returning to the chapter. I cannot do it alone; I would like all brothers to assist me. It is not just about getting brothers back into the fold – we have some challenging days ahead of Alpha and the African-American community. The more brothers we have helping, the more work we can do in the community. Fraternally, Brother Timothy Fitzgerald, Membership and Reclamation Committee Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. MU LAMBDA CHAPTER

As Membership and Reclamation Chair of Mu Lambda Chapter, I would like to bring greetings to you and extend an invitation for you to return to the chapter. I am proud to be a member of this chapter as Mu Lambda celebrates 95 years of serving Washington, DC since 1923. Since our charter, Mu Lambda Chapter has been an innovator, a builder, and a molder of men making a difference in the lives of many in the Washington Metropolitan area. Mu Lambda Chapter is working diligently to ensure that our programs and social activities continue to impact the community in a positive way by being a catalyst of change. Today, Mu Lambda stands as a beacon of light to the community and a strong source of leadership. Through our Henry Arthur Callis Academy, we continue to facilitate the growth of young males so they understand that leadership is not a burden but a responsibility. Staying true to Alpha’s core: we implement successfully the fraternity’s National Programs: Go-to-High School Go-to-School, A Voteless People is a Hopeless People, Project Alpha and Brothers’ Keeper. These four programmatic efforts are implemented through “out-of-the-box” formats to ensure that Mu Lambda Chapter is reaching the target audience. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Mu Lambda in not a monolithic chapter. It is rich in history, diversity and ready to serve. The membership of the chapter ranges in age 23 to 99. Salaries range from $30,000 to $1,000,000 per annum. The membership is comprised of brothers initiated in 117 different chapters. Fifty-five life members. The lowest life member number is 691, while the highest in the chapter is 13910. Brothers list their race as African American, Afro-Hispanic, Caucasian, Multi-Racial, and West Indian/Caribbean. All brothers have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Two have Dental Degrees. Three have Medical Degrees. Eleven have MBA Degrees. Twenty-six have Doctorate Degrees. Twenty-six have Law Degrees. Twenty-eight have Masters’ Degrees as their highest level of education.

I challenge you to reflect and rekindle the fraternal spirit. Message from the Chaplain Brothers, I do not get around as good and quickly as in the past. I am the primary caregiver for my wife with assistance from our children. We have many younger brothers trained in the ministry and I would like to start mentoring some of you to assist me and ultimately replace me in the future. I do not get to make all of the meetings but I do my best to make the one’s I can. Brother President and I have had countless conversations and accommodations to support me in the role. The Chaplain shall open each meeting with prayer and direct all devotional ceremonies approved and planned by the Chapter. The Chaplain shall maintain a list of those members of the Chapter who are in ill health. In addition, he shall visit the ill members and shall report to the Chapter on their status. When a brother or one of his family members are ill, we try to reach out and console the brother and his family. As your Chaplain, there are times I can use a call from the brothers. If you feel that this is something you would like to do, give me a call at 202.549.0035. Fraternally, Brother William (Tony) Hawkins Chaplain Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

mulambdafoundation.org The mission of the Mu Lambda Foundation, a 501(C)3 organization, is service to mankind, the promotion of scholarship, and the enhancement of knowledge and achievement of males of all ages. Our deepest purpose as an organization is to be the catalyst in communities by helping to support the health and well being of people. To prevent and alleviate human suffering while enabling people to realize their full potential by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The Foundation is the charitable arm of Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first African American intercollegiate fraternity, was founded in 1906 on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The Foundation’s charitable activities include the Henry Arthur Callis Academy, a mentoring program for male students in grades 9 – 12; Project Alpha, an anti-teen pregnancy program oriented to males; work with the DC Food Bank; partnering with the District of Columbia Public School system programs, including Boy Scouts and Youth Court; assisting at the Ronald McDonald House and The House of Ruth, where we serve meals to residents on a monthly basis; and college scholarships for needy youth. The Foundation has donated over $310,000 in scholarships over the past 20 years. The Henry Arthur Callis Academy is conducted at Frank Ballou Senior High School in Washington, DC. Meeting monthly with up to 20 students, the Foundation members and Ballou staff address college preparedness, mentoring, job shadowing, college visits and social interactions. The Foundation has a five-year strategic plan that will create opportunities to positively impact rates of success of local African American male youth along their trajectory from positive academic and social experiences in middle and high school, high school graduation, college entrance, and college completion. When executed, our strategic plan will provide a full range of Academy experiences and activities for African American young men in grades 9 - 12.

One-time gifts using credit/debit cards can be made on the CFC Pledging System. Can new hires give when they join a federal agency even if it is not during the campaign? Yes. 5 CFR §950.102(a)(1) states new federal employees must be provided information about the CFC at their orientation and must be allowed to make a pledge within 30 days of starting duty. Can a federal employee donate to a local charitable organization in a neighboring CFC campaign zone? Yes. Can a federal contractor contribute to the CFC campaign? Federal contractors working in Federal facilities may make one-time contributions (credit/debit card or e-check) through the CFC. This can be done on the CFC Pledging System. Will participating charitable organizations receive the names of donors who have contributed to their organizations? It is the responsibility of the Central Campaign Administrator (CCA) to provide the names of donors who wish to have their names released to the designated charitable organizations. Message from the House of Ruth Committee Greetings Brothers, Brothers Samuel Armstrong, Garrett Miller, Eddie Neal, and Albert Williams served the ladies of the House of Ruth on Saturday, September 7th. The menu was fried chicken, smoked chicken, corn, potato salad, green beans, rolls, almond cake, fruit cocktail, water, and sweet tea. Many thanks are extended to Brother Samuel Armstrong for his smoked chicken and Brother Garrett Miller’s almond cake. The women inquired about Brother Arthur King’s peach cobbler. We are looking for assistance for the October 12th meal. If you can cook, the ladies would appreciate your favorite dish. If you cannot cook and are willing to donate the ingredients, we will work with you to turn it into a wonderful meal for the ladies. We have not built the food service into the chapter’s budget. We serve the ladies once per month and 12 times per year. If a group of 12 different brothers per month prepare a dish, we can feed the ladies without burdening the chapter or individual brothers. It does not have to be an elaborate dish – just make sure it is something you would serve a good friend or someone you care about. We do not and will not feed the women scraps. If you are unable to attend and serve the dish, arrangements will be made to serve the dish. We arrive at 3:30 to set the table and serve dinner promptly at 4:30 pm. We aim to serve the ladies a different balanced meal each month. All meals are hot and served on the premises. Please review prior issues of the Torch for a listing of the previous menus.

How House of Ruth was started Veronica Maz, helped start 3 D.C. social service agencies, dies at 89 Written by Adam Bernstein - July 1, 2014 On a wintry day in 1970, Georgetown University professor Veronica Maz took two of her sociology students to Washington’s skid row to see poverty close up. They talked to a few of the homeless people who were roasting chicken claws over fire barrels. “And then I was going back to my car and my real nice comfortable home,” Dr. Maz later wrote in The Washington Post. “And a man fell down right in front of me, right on the sidewalk. And I just walked around him and got in my car. “And when I got in my car, I started talking to myself,” she continued. “I said, ‘Why didn’t you help him?’ Well, I just assumed he was drunk. Well, what if he were drunk? He could’ve had a heart attack. . . . All that night I didn’t sleep. It bothered me personally. Whatever these sensitivities that you grow up with that you’re not even conscious of. That’s faith.” Dr. Maz, who died June 25 at 89, became widely regarded as a patron saint of Washington’s hungry, indigent, abused and dispossessed. On a shoestring budget, she helped start three of Washington’s most important nonprofit social service organizations: So Others Might Eat, which offers free food, counseling and health care to the homeless; the House of Ruth, which shelters and advises battered women; and Martha’s Table, which opened in 1980 (with $93) as a place for children to get free sandwiches after school. In addition to its child-centered functions, Martha’s Table now feeds thousands of low-income and destitute individuals and families and offers support services, including clothing programs. Ed Guinan, a former priest who founded the Community for Creative Non-Violence homeless shelter, called Dr. Maz a spearhead in the movement

to address an “epidemic” of homelessness, especially after the deinstitutionalization of people with mental illness in the 1970s. In their book “Everything to Gain: Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life,” former president Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter wrote: “Because of Veronica Maz, individuals and groups throughout the area have stopped hurrying by the street people and started to help, volunteering at Martha’s kitchens and shelters.” “People were in total denial that this situation existed,” Guinan said. “Even churches — and these were good-hearted people — couldn’t believe it that people in Washington were hungry or couldn’t get a meal.” He also discussed Dr. Maz’s work with women and children, saying “she pointed the way there” for organizations such as his own to follow suit. Dr. Maz — a “hyperkinetic fireplug,” as syndicated columnist George F. Will described her — left academia around the time of her encounter with the man who had collapsed before her eyes. She began a new career as a self-dubbed “social entrepreneur.” Continued on the next page

OCTOBER 2019 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 35

THE TORCH -----------------------------------------------------------------------------When Dr. Maz began to work on the streets, it was a desperate moment for the capital’s poor. “The city opened more shelters, but provided no food, and a growing army of men and women were rummaging through the garbage cans behind the city’s fancy restaurants, competing with rats for the scraps,” the Carters wrote. Dr. Maz began providing administrative support for the Rev. Horace McKenna of St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Northeast Washington. He had been a community lodestar for outreach efforts to the hungry and indigent. With McKenna’s support, she opened So Others Might Eat — SOME, as it became known. The organization moved to an empty storefront near the church and began serving its first meals in 1971, with sandwiches and coffee supplied by a local vending-machine company. Within two years, SOME had become the city’s largest soup-kitchen operation. She scoured for donations — getting hundreds of pounds of leftover fried chicken from a drive-through chain, loaves of day-old bread from supermarkets, uneaten sandwiches from an industrial catering company. SOME grew into a halfway house and counseling center for recovering alcoholics, and debts mounted as it began trying to accommodate more people off the street. Meanwhile, she said, dozens of requests for city funding went nowhere. She had to “beg” to get money to cover expenses. “Everybody claims to be so interested in poverty,” she told The Post at the time, “but it’s just words, words, words.” One imperative stuck out: the streams of women who kept showing up at SOME with nowhere else to turn. She persuaded the SOME board to open Shalom House, a shelter that at first had room for about eight homeless women. Two hundred appeared the opening week in 1973, she recalled. Three years later, Dr. Maz began the House of Ruth as a shelter for abused women. Many women were referred by social service organizations or dropped off by police. Dr. Maz said still others tried to reach out for help themselves, desperate to escape violent husbands and boyfriends. She recounted the calls that came with harrowing regularity from women who struggled over the phone to provide their address before screaming as the lines went dead. “Men can always find a place,” Dr. Maz told the Los Angeles Times in 1976. “Gospel missions, the Salvation Army — they are all geared to men, with only a few beds for women. Everyone assumes that women are taken care of but it just isn’t true. There are hundreds of homeless women who don’t have one person who cares. They are friendless. They have

no one. And they need someone. We are trying to be that someone.” House of Ruth has since expanded into a network of shelters and rehabilitation centers for homeless and battered women. Dr. Maz’s next project, Martha’s Table, was focused on the city’s most vulnerable children — hungry and neglected and often left to fend for themselves on streets cluttered with prostitutes and drug dealers. An outgrowth of Martha’s Table was a mobile soup kitchen she called “McKenna’s Wagon” after her late mentor at St. Aloysius. Martha’s Table, which Dr. Maz left in 1987 as president, now serves 200 children a day. “The common theme of all her work was that the safety net wasn’t working for people,” said Patty Stonesifer, president and chief executive of Martha’s Table and a past co-chair and chief executive of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She added that the District still has 30,000 children who do not have adequate access to healthful food. “Whether it was hunger, or getting away from abuse, or whether it was a way to serve children whose parents were not prepared to provide the quality of care the children needed, her sense was there’s no sense of the least among us,” Stonesifer added. “If you’d do it for your next-door neighbors, you must do it for all. That sense permeated all she did.” Veronica Sophie Maz was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Aliquippa, a town near Pittsburgh, where her parents owned a bar. She was a 1947 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where she also received a doctorate in sociology in 1953. She taught at Lake Erie College for Women in Painesville, Ohio, and Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., before joining the Georgetown faculty in the mid-1960s. Dr. Maz died at a hospital in Beaver, Pa., of kidney ailments and complications from a broken hip, said a niece, Barbara Dzumba. Her aunt moved to Center Township, Pa., from Washington within the past few years. Survivors include a sister. When Dr. Maz first opened So Others Might Eat, she said the concept intimidated her. “I knew nothing about soup kitchens,” she recalled. But she knew one thing — she would need soup spoons. She approached a woman in the apartment building across the street. “I asked her for a spoon and if she would ask her neighbor for one,” she told The Post. That afternoon, the woman brought over 75 soup spoons, and a movement was born

AARP Driver Safety Course Hightlights

Mu Lambda Partners with AARP for Smart Driver Course on September 28th The AARP Smart Driver Course, offered by the AARP Driver Safety, is the nation’s first and largest refresher course designed specifically for older drivers. For more than 30 years, the classroom and online courses have taught millions of drivers proven safety strategies so they can continue driving safely for as long as possible. The course provides research-based information to help drivers update their driving knowledge and skills. By participating in the course, drivers are taking advantage of an important opportunity to learn how to drive more safely and confidently. In fact, research shows that as a result of completing the course, most people make positive changes to their driving behaviors. Some of the key topics covered: New Vehicle technologies, changes in roadway signs, proper driving distance, tire safety test, proper distance from the steering wheel, mirror settings, pavement markings, and safe driving practices.

BROTHERS LEGAL CORNER Brothers, Last month I presented an article on wills and living trusts – you can go back and read it if you missed it. I discussed the pros of a living trust versus a will. This month I would like to present an alternative from AARP’s perspective. In addition, I attended General President Ward’s reception during the Congressional Black Caucus weekend. Brother Marc Morial spoke at length about the 2020 census, thus I would like to take the opportunity to address it as well. The Pros and Cons of Living Trusts. You can use them to avoid probate, but not everyone needs one by Jane Bryant Quinn, AARP, September 10, 2019 You have a will (I hope!), but is that enough? Would you and your heirs be better off if you created a living trust? These trusts often appear on the menu at free senior seminars, tempting everyone to gobble them up. They can indeed be valuable — for specific financial and personal purposes. But sticking with a will may be better, and cheaper, depending on your state laws and the amount of your assets. Like wills, living trusts (formally known as revocable trusts) list the people who will receive your property after you die, leaving you free to manage it while you’re alive. Unlike wills, trusts require that you give up direct ownership of that property. Instead, it’s normally transferred, or “retitled,” into the trust. I’ll say more about this process in a minute. First, I’d like to make some general comparisons between wills and trusts. Living trusts avoid probate, which is often part of their appeal. Probate is the legal process by which a will is accepted as genuine, creditors get paid and heirs receive assets to which they are entitled. With trusts, these functions are handled privately by a trustee. The question for you is whether probate is worth avoiding. Many states have streamlined, simplified procedures for uncontested wills.

They also have low-cost ways to probate modest estates. (The site nolo.com has collected a list of states’ rules; if you live in, say, Ohio, type “avoiding probate in Ohio” in the site’s search box, then scroll down the results to Articles.) There’s no probate at all for retirement accounts with named beneficiaries, joint accounts with survivorship rights, pay-on-death accounts and life insurance. If these types of assets make up the bulk of your estate, a will works fine. Trusts are useful, however, in certain situations — for example, if probate is expensive (as it is in states where lawyers charge a percentage of the estate’s assets, rather than flat or hourly fees); if you own property in more than one state (to avoid double probate); or if you have assets that need ongoing management, such as business interests or trading accounts. In many states, living trusts can’t be reached by creditors, says attorney Gerry W. Beyer, a professor of law at Texas Tech University. With or without a trust, you can name backups to manage your affairs should you become disabled. If you don’t have a trust, you can give a power of attorney to a person you pick. With a trust, your chosen trustee will act. The transition might go a little more smoothly with a trust, but not necessarily. Trusts require extra paperwork. You have to transfer all your property into your name as trustee. That includes the deed to your house, your bank and investment accounts (usually excluding tax-deferred retirement accounts), valuable personal property and any new assets you acquire. You’ll want legal guidance, which raises the cost of a living trust compared with a basic will. If the transfers go wrong, your trust becomes a useless piece of paper. “I’ve seen this happen thousands of times,” Beyer says. continued on next page

THE TORCH ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Never buy a living trust form off the rack. Ask an experienced lawyer what it can do and whether you need it at all. The 2020 census The information above this line was from AARP. From this point on is my personal commentary. The US will be gearing up for the census starting March 2020. One of the biggest changes is that the census will have an online component. Historically, older Americans have been more likely to return the census form and be counted. With all of the reports of computer hacking and electronic voter tampering, Older Americans are less likely to participate with an online component. How will older Americans get counted if they do not participate online? Between March 12 and 20th, most households will receive a postcard asking them to respond online to the census. I have been told that those who do not respond will then receive the traditional paper form in the mail. If you still do not respond the Census Bureau will send someone knocking on your door to collect the data. You will also have the option of calling the 1-800 number and providing your response.

of each person in the home. The relationship of each person to a central person in the home. I am being told the 2020 census will include a new household relationship category that allow couples living together to identify their relationship as either “same-sex” or “oppositesex.” Are census responses confidential? Under current law, the Census Bureau is not to share census responses identifying individuals with the public or federal agencies, until 72 years after the information is collected. The Census Bureau can release anonymized information about demographic groups. The Census Bureau is expected to announce the new population counts by December 31, 2020. Since the above is my brotherly commentary, please feel free to validate the facts. Fraternally, Brother Eddie Neal President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

Why should you participate in the 2020 census? An estimated $880 billions of dollars will be spent based on the 2020 census count. The information is often used to determine the location of new schools, hospitals, and highways. It will aid federal, state, and local government in distributing benefits for the well-being of children, families, and the elderly. Federal law mandates participating in the census but the Census Bureau has not traditionally sought to penalize individuals who fail to participate. The census is also supposed to be used to determine that each community gets the right number of representatives in government. What questions will the 2020 census ask? The number of people living or staying in a home on April 1, 2020. Whether the home is owned with or without a mortgage, rented or occupied without rent. Phone number for a person in the home. THE SECRET TO KEEPING YOUR TEETH There really is no “secret” to keeping your teeth. It is done simply by exercising good oral hygiene and eating a healthy diet. Most individuals who lose their teeth do so mostly as a result of carious destruction of the teeth, in layman terms, they decay and periodontal disease a condition often referred to as pyorrhea. These two diseases contribute to most of the tooth loss that human beings experience. Barring trauma and some systemic diseases tooth loss is usually a result of lack of good oral hygiene.

where dental floss comes in. Tooth brushes cannot clean the surfaces of teeth that are in contact with adjacent teeth as the bristles cannot access those areas. Dental floss, a threadlike substance is used to slide between the teeth and remove adhering food and bacteria. Correct usage of dental floss is essential in achieving good oral hygiene. The question that remains is why are dental visits necessary if one is doing all of these things? In the mechanics of tooth brushing and flossing, it is most probable that individuals will consistently miss areas on the teeth. This allows for the colonization of bacteria on the teeth and when left for some time this plaque hardens and becomes affixed to the teeth. Hardened plaque is called calculus. It cannot be removed by a tooth brush or floss and so visits to a dentist are necessary to identify areas missed in cleaning and the removal of the calculus by a dentist or dental hygienist. If this does not occur, the gums become inflamed, may bleed on brushing and the fibers that connect the teeth to the bone may be damaged. The condition tends to invade the tissues beneath the gums, where brushing is impossible, spreading towards the apices or bottoms of the roots, resulting in loosening of the teeth. When it becomes severe, teeth will be lost as a result of no connection to the underlying bone, a condition found in severe periodontitis.

Both diseases can be significantly reduced by good oral hygiene. Oral hygiene entails mainly the removal of bacterial plaque from the teeth and gums, which is achieved by proper brushing and flossing. There are documented instances in some areas of the world where individuals do not use tooth brushes but eat a more granular and fibrous diet than is consumed in more developed countries and use other means of removing bacterial plaque from the teeth, such as chew sticks. Chew sticks are twigs from a variety of trees some of which are antiseptic and antibacterial in nature and aid in removing bacteria from the teeth and gums, freshen the breath and even aid in digestive and stomach problems. The key, therefore, is the removal of bacteria from the teeth and gums however it can be achieved. Failure to do a good job in cleaning the mouth may result in gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums or periodontal disease, the destruction of the periodontium, or structures which attach the teeth to the surrounding bone. Diets rich in carbohydrates tend to facilitate the formation of sugars in the mouth which seem to provide a nidus for plaque formation and adherence to the teeth. More fibrous diets seem to aid in removal of plaque from the teeth resulting in less caries. So what should a resident of developed countries do to enhance the retention of teeth? First, limit the intake of carbohydrates and sticky sweet foods. Second, thorough daily cleaning of the mouth followed by annual or semi-annual visits to your dentist. There are four areas of teeth that need to be cleaned daily. In the anterior teeth, one needs to clean the front or labial surfaces and the back or lingual surfaces. In the posterior teeth, the biting surfaces or occlusal surfaces must be cleaned. In all teeth, the proximal surfaces or those surface in between teeth must also be cleaned. These are the most difficult surfaces to clean as they generally contact adjacent teeth. The tighter the interproximal contacts, the more difficult the task. This is

In cavities, the bacteria attacks the enamel and erodes it. If the tooth is not treated the decay continues to degrade the tooth, often resulting in a toothache, causing the possible extraction of the tooth. Finally is it better to use a manual or electric tooth brush? Generally it does not matter IF the individual thoroughly cleans the mouth but most people give a “lick and a promise,” to cleaning their teeth. In such cases, an electric tooth brush is invaluable. They are usually programmed for two minute brushing; thirty seconds for each of the four quadrants of the mouth. This forces the individual to spend more time, brushing and the rotary movement of the brush heads usual produce more thorough cleaning than most individuals achieve with a manual brush. Flossing is still a necessity no matter which brushing technique is employed. Remember! Ignore your teeth and they will go away! Brother Ryle A. Bell

Prostate Health The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland in the male reproductive system that wraps around the urethra. A major function of the prostate gland is to add fluid to semen. The prostate gland starts out small. However, it size doubles during the teenage years and then has a second phase of growth after the age of 25 throughout the remainder of a man’s life. Prostrate problems in men can be considered benign conditions, ranging from inflammation (prostatitis) or non-cancerous enlargement (BPH), or cancerous. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men after skin cancer.

percent of men diagnosed with prostate cancer today will be alive in five years. Your treatment decisions will depend largely on what kind of prostate cancer you have and how aggressive it is. Prostate cancer, if it spreads or metastasizes, typically goes to the bones, lungs, or lymph nodes. Prostate cancer can only be diagnosed with a tissue sample, which is obtained through a biopsy. Once you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, you can learn more about your disease state, including your Gleason Score or grade, which indicates the aggressiveness of the disease, and Stage, which indicates the location of the cancer cells in your body. This information will help you and your doctor work together to develop the best treatment plan for you. Many prostate cancer symptoms are very similar to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP), prostatitis, erectile dysfunction, or overactive bladder. These include: • • • • • • • • • •

Prostate Anatomy 1. Benign prostatic hypertrophy/hyperplasia (BPH): an excessively enlarged prostate that is noncancerous. However, BPH can be burdensome and symptomatic as the enlarged prostate can impede urinary flow as its size blocks the urethra. Symptoms include urinary frequency, urinary hesitancy, urinary incontinence or leakage, frequent nighttime urination, and frequent urinary tract infections. 2. Prostate Cancer: African American men are at an increased risk for developing prostate cancer over white men and other men of color. One in six African American men will develop prostate cancer in his lifetime. Overall, African American men are 1.7 times more likely to be diagnosed with—and 2.3 times more likely to die from—prostate cancer than white men. Prostate cancer in African American men is usually more aggressive disease and they are also slightly more likely than white men to be diagnosed with advanced disease. Where do I start? don’t know where to begin when it comes to wanting to explore another country through an educational route? How many college students of color know the path to becoming globally aware beyond the United States? And then how many know how to fund those opportunities, what the educational, career, and personal benefits are? Who to contact? What website to pore over? What questions to ask those who have attended such programs? And on top of that, I found out many times the decision for studying abroad or working abroad is a family decision so then that person has to help their family members understand and possibly be comfortable with their decision to leave the United States.

Guest post by Brother Byron L. Williams, International Affairs Professional English as my mother tongue. Spanish when I was in my teens. Sesotho (native language from the African country of Lesotho) when I was in my early 20s. Ukrainian (one of the native languages from the European nation of Ukraine) when I was in my early 30s. These are all the languages I have learned in my life. What’s more important is: 1) why I chose to learn another language, 2) how it was made accessible to me, and 3) why language has played a key role in my personal and professional life. Since attending my Las Vegas high school that was predominantly African American and Latino I had wanted to participate in a foreign exchange program to improve my Spanish. I told myself I was too busy grades 10 through 12 so it didn’t happen. Immediately after starting university I jumped into activities oncampus so it didn’t happen all the while still yearning to study abroad. I told myself, ‘that I was too tied to my organizations and clubs to break away from my scholarly duties and commitments’ in my secondary AND higher education experiences. In earnest, at both stages I didn’t know where to start since, while I was in high school and college, I didn’t have any friends who studied abroad or were excited about learning languages with the equivalent fervor. My love of language has been as much about culture as it has been about access to culture since I started learning Spanish in 10th grade. Language has been my window into culture and this insight has set my personal and professional journey into international relations, foreign affairs, and most recently national security.

Because of that, I decided to create my ultimate grad school project around early exposure of international affairs opportunities (ranging from middle school to mid career professional) in communities of color. Perhaps if I would have known about the likes of Institute of International Education, Cultural Vistas, Council on Foreign Relations, or even made better use of my career services office in undergrad to point me in the right direction I would have studied abroad or determined my true career path much earlier. What has intrigued me is by accessing language at an earlier age it made me much more aware of my surroundings beyond my immediate community and in addition, a culturally competent global citizen. In writing this I have discovered my current career path has been more about me asking questions and thinking critically instead of starting with the answer. I decided on my capstone focus because I’ve spoken to so many people and families of color who want to know about my experiences abroad as an: 1) African American in Africa and Europe, 2) African American male, 3) a person of color, 4) a mid-career person of color, 5) a young person of color, 6) a person of color from Las Vegas, 7) a person of color with no one else in my family having taken this journey before me, and more. My research for my capstone also spurred me to learn more about the intertwining and dependent results of language acquisition such as: 1) the disparity of language immersion programs in communities of color, and also 2) the sociological weaving that can affect such things as poverty, health, career trajectory, upward mobility, codeswitching, cultural competence, workforce development, and public health. Throughout it all my passion for language, culture, foreign policy, and increasing access to these resources has always been ever-present in all that I’ve accomplished and how I want to contribute to stoking the interest of more people to consider viable career in international and foreign service.

The 111th Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Let us celebrate this 96th year of “ALPHA MAGIC” by participating in this years charter day celebration. The year is nearing, and we have accomplished so much and affected the lives of so many. May we continue to hold the light high and move Alpha forward into highths beyond what we can imagine. If you are a brother looking to plant some seeds into a committee, join one now. If you have an idea, give this house a chance to hear it. If you need more brotherhood, give it, and I believe it will be given to you. I want to speak continued excellence into my chapter, Exceptional brotherhood among my brothers and ask each of you to find the steward within yourselves and be of service no matter who comes or don’t show. Remember, the difference in the world starts with one... BE THAT ONE!

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
