Mu Lambda Brothers, Welcome to June - Which is Alzheimer’s, Cataract, Men’s Health, and National Safety Awareness Month. The health topics we share from the MLHWC are to provide in-sight and knowledge about what are family, friends, and love-ones may be going through. Below are articles of interest addressing several subject matters. Please go to links below or cut and paste into your browser to read entire articles.
Alzheimer’s in African Americans
Many Americans dismiss the warning signs of Alzheimer’s, believing that these symptoms are a normal part of aging. This is of even greater concern for African-Americans, who are two times more likely to develop late-onset Alzheimer’s disease than whites and less likely to have a diagnosis of their condition, resulting in less time for treatment and planning. By working together, we hope to reduce the risk factors and reverse the growing trend of Alzheimer’s disease among African-Americans. Sign up for our e-newsletter and get the latest info on treatments, research and care. Link: https://www.alz.org/africanamerican/
AFRICAN AMERICANS AND CATARACTS (BlackDoctor.org) — Blindness affects blacks more frequently than whites and Hispanics. Cataracts and glaucoma are serious problems for African Americans, causing over half of the cases of blindness in African Americans. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Symptoms of cataracts include: • cloudy or blurry vision • colors looking faded • poor night vision • seeing double • seeing a halo around lights See an eye doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms. More women than men get cataracts. In the U.S., about half of the vision loss in African Americans is caused by cataracts. Link: https://blackdoctor.org/2576/african-americans-and-cataracts__trashed/

For the Good of the “HOOD” BROTHER HIGHLIGHT - Bro. Richard A. English Members and Friends of St. Mary’s Church, It is with pleasure that the members of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church acknowledge the recognition received by our very own, Dr. Richard A. English, a Talladega alumnus and former vice chairman of the College’s Board of Trustees at the college’s May 6, 2018 commencement. The highlight included a $100,000 gift from Dr. William F. Pichard, who made the donation in honor of Dr. English. During Dr. Pichard’s address, he recounted an old memory of Dr. English. “I went to the Flint Urban League on a Saturday morning when they are normally closed and I needed $250 to pay my dorm fee to go away to college at Western Michigan University.” Dr. Pickard stated. The Urban League had already given away all of their scholarships. However, Dr. English said he would raise the funds at an Alpha Phi Alpha Meeting, And he did. In Dr. Pickard’s address to Talladega’s 128 graduates, Dr. Pickard said, “Anybody from anywhere can accomplish anything.” He encouraged students to have a vision and stated, “You will never be what you cannot see.” The attached article provides more information about Dr. English honor and the Talladega College Commencement .
